Updating the Olympic contest, men's basketball. It's one of those deals where every time they make a push, Serbia has an answer. Right now, Team USA is down nine, late third quarter. In fact, a minute to go in the quarter and they're down by nine at 70 to 61. They've cut it to six, but they just can't seem to get over the hump right now. They are really in a battle with Serbia right now, and it is late in the third quarter. We'll keep you updated on that. As I mentioned, the details on the men's 110-meter hurdle final, the Americans take gold and silver, Grand Holloway won the goal with a time of 12.99, and Daniel Roberts got the silver at 13.09 and was 3.1 thousandths of a second ahead of Rashid Broadbell of Jamaica who got the bronze. The women's 400-meter hurdles, as we mentioned, the United States also took gold and silver. Sydney McLaughlin of Rome with an Olympic record and world record time of 50.37 and a Cockrell took the silver in that and the bronze went to Fimke Bowl of the Netherlands. Again, in the men's 200-meter final, if you didn't hear about it, Noel Liles did not win gold. Let's see, Tobogo Botswana won the gold. Kenneth Benard took the silver Liles, took the bronze, and then it was revealed afterwards that he had tested positive for COVID a couple of days and was still in the, was still kind of feeling the effects of it, but said he never considered not running in the race, and he did go ahead and he ran in the race and ended up finishing the bronze. Does not yet know if he will participate in the four-by-hundred-meter relay that he's supposed to be a part of? The U.S. continues to struggle, as we mentioned, so we've told you about that and we'll keep you posted on the game right now, but they're back down 14 again, late third quarter 75 seconds. And one on a three-pointer. That's just that is non-defensible, Craig. Boy, and just by watching the Serbian bench to just trying to feel it, I mean, there's still a whole other quarter to play. Remember, it's it's Feba quarter, so it's 10 minutes, not 12. Yep. Yep, absolutely. So they're going to have to get it turned to do this, and they're in a waning seconds of the third quarter in the United States, which in the first half trailed by as many as 15 now finds themselves down 15 again in the waning seconds of the third quarter. So they're going to have to really get it in gear, or it's going to be a huge upset, and they're going to have to just at best hope to try to win a bronze medal because right now it does not look good for them. They're working for the final shot of the third quarter, but this is a this is a team that's had struggles throughout both defending and also knocking down shots. Kevin Durant, part of the group as well. He missed three straight shots, one, three and a couple of twos. Steph Curry, one of the few guys who's making shots for Team USA, but not enough other guys are doing it making shots for them. So Durant finally able to break through and Kevin and knock one down. He went into today, needing only six points to reach 500 all time Olympic points he hadn't gotten there yet. So they're down 13 at the end of the third quarter at 76 63 Serbia, and the US is really going to have to get on the stick if they're going to rally back to to advance to the gold medal round. That would be the easily, easily the biggest disappointment for the United States and these Olympic games. If that were to happen, if they were to fall to Serbia today in the semifinals, they've had some disappointments yesterday in volleyball in the semifinal round, had a two to one sets lead on Poland and were three points away from winning it in four sets, couldn't finish it off. Poland got it to a fifth set and then one in that fifth set tiebreaker to force the US into playing for the bronze instead of playing for the gold as well. We've talked about Noah Lyles. He did win the gold in the 100 meter but comes up with only a bronze in the 200 meter. She carried Richardson and a couple of her team USA hopes dashed, including there in the 100 when Julian Alfred, the Texas Longhorn was able to beat her. By the way, another Longhorn has triumphed today and I want to make sure I mention that it's Tara Davis Woodhall who won Olympic gold in the long jump. The former Longhorn doing it. 7.10 meters, 7 feet and 0.10 meters. The lone competitor to jump further than 7 meters and she did so twice at 7.05 and 7.10. It's the second game for Davis Woodhall and she joins Canadian Richard Duncan as the only two long ones to be two-time long jump Olympians. She finished sixth at Tokyo in the last one but congratulations to Tara Davis Woodhall winning a gold medal in the long jump so it continues to go really well for them. I mentioned Major League Baseball notes. A couple of baseball notes. One was that and there was no real surprise that this was probably going to happen. Pedro Gefal, their manager of the Chicago White Sox was fired today. They named former All-Star Alfred a great size more as the interim replacement. The White Sox at 28 and 89 right now and on a pace to possibly wind up with more losses than any team since 1899 since the 1899 Cleveland Spiders that could happen if it goes on for that. We move into football and talking about the Longhorns. They had practiced this morning and of course the Longhorns having to do without CJ Baxter who had suffered the knee injury and as a result of that on Tuesday morning is out for the season. He's going to have off-season knee surgery. A lot of the conversation at SARC's media availability was about the running back room and the guy stepping in and all that. We heard a lot from that last hour from SARC. In his media availability today, SARC was also talking about his running backs coach to charge choice and talked about his role about having the running backs, the ones who are there healthy in the running back room ready to go. Yeah, I think coach choice does a great job in his room. They're one heartbeat in that room. It's not individuals. It's one room. There's a standard for which he sets and we step for how our running backs play on our offense and on our team. As you guys know now going into year four, the running back is an integral part of what we do and they possess kind of the heartbeat of the team and our running style and then our ability to be really versatile. We ask a lot of the runners and so when their numbers are called, I think they're all very hungry. They work hard. We push them. They get a lot of reps in practice and so when their number is called in-game, generally whoever goes in there plays really well. You can go back to our very first year whenever Jonathan Brooks went in the game, it was like, man, he's scoring another long touchdown. And so go back to last year when early in the season, whenever Jayden Blue would get in the game, the BYU game, he's snapping off long runs and so it's a hungry room. I think coach choice does a great job of motivating those guys, but yet hold them accountable to the standard for which we want those guys to play. Yeah, okay. And that means getting the youngsters ready. It's one thing and we heard Sark talking about Trey Weisner, but getting, you know, Jared Gibson getting Christian Clark ready, those guys and remember what CJ Baxter did very, very well last year and that was to be able to move between the tackles, to run between the tackles. And so Sark was asked if either of the two newbies possessed that ability. Both of them, both of them are physical players. You know, Derek is a workhorse. He's a very hard nose runner, tough. Christian's got great one cut ability, both catch the ball out of the backfield. But when you see him in person, you just look at their lower halves. They're put together. They're very physical players. They're strong. So I'd have no hesitation running either of those guys between the tackles. Okay, so we know that about that now back to the rest of the offense. So yesterday, there was a lot of conversation about the leadership of the football team and the leadership on the offensive side. And Quinn Ewer's name came up a lot, obviously, naturally being the quarterback of the team. So Sark was asked, does it really fall on Quinn Ewer's to get this team together and to get them to be able to execute and to play well and to practice well to continue good preparation for the coming season in the wake of this very difficult injury news? Well, without question, you know, hey, knock on wood. I hate to say this, but that's not going to be our only injury this fall. You know, it's football and everybody goes through it. And unfortunately, we had to go through it, you know, early on in training camp with a good player. Other people are going to go through it at different times throughout the year as well. That's why we have to continue to develop the players that we have. The players have to understand it might not be about what's happening right now and where I'm at in my phase of development. But at some point, my number is going to get called and am I going to be ready to seize that opportunity? But at the end of the day, you know, our leadership is our leadership, you know, and that stuff can't waver, whether it's Quinn or Kelvin or Jake on offense, those guys are gunner to Baron Sorrell or Anthony Hill or Michael Taff or Jada Baron on the defensive side of the ball. We've got great leadership on our team. And so I'm not asking more of them from a leadership standpoint. I'm asking them to be who they are and who they are is good enough. Okay. And there's been a lot of talk about the wide receiver position, the versatility of the position. If, you know, they can, you know, even with the guys who have moved on, you know, and not having an Xavier worthy there anymore or an Adonai Mitchell or Jordan Whittington with the implants that they have now between the freshmen and also coming through the portal. Does it give them the versatility that they had last year and more of that? And furthermore, does it help Sark as a play caller to have that kind of versatility of wide receiver? Well, I think the one thing that it does, you know, you're, you're, again, I'm knocking on wood down the road. If a couple of guys get nicked up, I know that I've got guys that can play multiple positions for us. First of all, second of all, as we're going through it, yes, they are versatile, but we are still trying to identify what they do best so that we ultimately can put them in position to do the things that they do best in game with the understanding that they're not limited to just that, that there's more to their game than just that. And so that's the process we're in right now, recognizing the versatility, yet identifying what they do best and ensuring that our job as coaches is to put them in the best position to be successful. All right. So there's some more from Sark. We'll hear more from him coming up next hour in the third segment next hour. We have Greg Tepper, managing editor at Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine coming on in the second segment of next hour coming up in the third segment of this hour. In other words, the next segment, we'll hear some comments from Baron Cerrell of the Longwood football team updating you on the men's basketball game at the Olympics. Team USA kind of getting a shot in the arm that it needed. One three pointer went down and then in the three pointer, if I saw it correctly, Cam, Kevin Durant hit a three and there was a foul committed, not against Kevin. But another player got knocked down. The three went through. They counted the three. Team USA got possession of the ball and then hit another three after, right? And so now it's down to five at 78-73 with about seven minutes to go. Yeah, a big run from team USA and you're seeing them kind of close this game with Braun Curry and Steph and Bead at the fore and in Booker is that this spot is good lineup. I mean, I think Kerr should use these five guys for the last seven minutes of this ball game because you're going to need Curry and LeBron on the floor Katie as well. But it's basketball is getting good. It's getting good. So if you're not watching it right now, if you have a chance to pull up USA on your streaming the Pfizer TV because it's a really good game. Booker was one who was knocked down when Duran hit the three and then off the inbounds Booker hit the three. So it's a five point game right now with a seven minute mark when they were down 15, not that long ago, but it's 78-73. And you do see the intensity on the part of the guys like LeBron and some of the other guys as well really crank it it up right now trying to, you know, flip the script on this thing and finish this right now. So they're down five by a score of 78 73 with seven minutes remaining in the ball game and we'll keep you updated on that. All right. And by the way, Serbia just hit a bucket. So it's 80 73. It's a seven point lead for Serbia under seven minutes remaining in the game. We'll keep you updated on that. We'll hear from Baron Sorrell coming up as well as we continue on sports radio.
