But also, if you are on Twitter, you should go check out Swipe's timeline because Swipe is having, probably having himself a day. Swipe will be with you with Adam on Friday. They'll talk about their reactions to that game, and going forward kind of their feelings on things as well as Team Serbia in the rest of the way. So we'll start today, and we'll talk about Team Serbia falling to Team USA about Nicole Yochich and his performance, about kind of like what we learned from it. Rat, we're going to put a bow on the Olympics because now neither team can nor Team Serbia can win gold or silver, so that's out of the question now. And so we'll kind of put a bow on turning the page from the Olympics towards going forward for the Nuggets as they get the we are seven weeks from training camp. So that's a thing to kind of keep in mind. In the final segment, we'll talk about, hey, some news broke on the schedule that's going to come out next week. And we'll talk about how Denver is once again playing on Christmas, all that more on today's show. Glad to have you with us. Let's start right here. So, Nicole Yochich and Team Serbia lose to Team USA 95-91. They led by a ton in this game, and it took a frantic second half comeback by Team USA as they outscore Team Serbia 52-37 in the second half. And Yoch was absolutely dealing in the first half. Yoch finishes this game with 17 points, 11 assists, five boards, but he does go in minus 10 because of the comeback in the second half. Team Serbia actually did manage. There were two big things that helped Team Serbia in this game. They hit their threes. We talked so much about that, about how they needed better shooting around Nicole Yochich. You have to knock down shots. They were on fire for the first really, I think, you know, have two and a half quarters of this game. They were really on fire, and they kept making big shots when Team USA made a run, and you really thought that maybe they had a chance. But ultimately, it was LeBron, Steph, in particular, who was absolutely incendiary in this game. Kevin Durant with two huge buckets late, a four point play over Yochich. Some sure, some fans are thrilled about. And to give credit where it's due, Joellen B was really big with his offense in this game. He struggled rebounding and had some bad turnovers, but I thought B played with a lot of heart. I thought he played with a lot of passion in this game. So it'd yoke. I thought yoke played amazing in this game. Nicole Yochich left it all on the floor for his country, and it was a really awesome game in which, look, I'm a snarky, sarcastic fellow. That should be apparent by now. And having done this so long, like there's a level of jadedness, but there was something really beautiful about today and that it was two teams really playing with a lot on the line for legacies. Yes, Team USA has won all these goals, yes, Team USA has dominated since pros were allowed in to the Olympics. However, it is tougher than ever before. And this was a signature moment for LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, who are all probably in their last appearance in the Olympics. And to be able to have these kinds of moments, I think, is meaningful. And it's meaningful that Team Serbia was able to develop this league and push them as hard as they did. Team Serbia played together. Yoke was absolutely perfect with his reads in this game. He did struggle in the second half. He really struggled shooting in the second half. And I think it's not, look, it's one game versus Team USA of all people, but I am of the opinion of like, it's something I'm going to be watching now. As far as like, I worry about Yoke being able to handle the immense amount of basketball that he's played. I look this up. The only player that's played more games than Yokech since 2019 is Jason Tatum. He's the only player that's played in more games. And that makes sense, given what Tatum's been a part of. Yokech has just played in an absolutely incredible amount of basketball. And he continues to compete and do these things. And he really played hard. And this, to me, quite honestly, was the first Olympic run where Yokech was the center point, where he was the focus, where he was the best player. And even though I think there were times where Team Serbia got away from giving him the ball enough throughout this Olympic run, they still were built around him. And they know that kind of going forward, and that'll be a really big benefit. I think if you were taking anything away from Team Serbia's run, you kind of need to acknowledge or at least recognize that he and Bogdan Bogdanovitch have absolutely incredible chemistry. Just absolutely amazing chemistry together. And that Bogdanovitch really does something like he compliments Yokech really well. And Bogdanovitch was talking trash to Melo today. He was talking trash to everybody. They really competed at an exceptionally high level. I'm not trying to be patronizing with this in that where it's like, well, you lost. But like, good job. You hung in there. Like, no, like Team Serbia, I talked to several people today that are heavy in the basketball space. And a lot of people said like they felt Team Serbia was the better team today. And that might have been true. Ultimately, it just comes down to who makes shots and who makes moments. And Team USA did have all these guys do that. And I'm not going to deny Team USA credit just because they were expected to win. Like Team USA got challenged, Team USA rose to the moment. And if you want to point out, it took all of those guys to beat Yoke by four, I think that's fair. I think it's a testament to like how much better international basketball is Team Serbia is and how great Nicole Yokech is because they were able to play together and they really found chemistry and this should be a team sport and it shouldn't just be a bunch of guys being individually better than everybody else. You should have to play together. And Team USA struggled that all afternoon, but they found enough answers to get the win and they deserve credit for that. Even if it meant that they, they won as huge favorites by less than they should have or were expected to. And for me with Team Serbia, you could say like, no moral victories. Like we wanted to win. We want to compete. That's totally fair. But there's something honorable, I think, about competing in the Olympics. I think there's honorable about having a game like that that went down to the wire. I think there's something honorable about how much they had to have earned the respect of Team USA because I've seen Team USA that have absolutely just clowned everybody and that wasn't this. And Team Serbia to me represented themselves just as well as spainted in the 2008 run, which was an absolutely iconic Spain team. And so I think it's really incredible that Team Serbia put on the performance that they did. They really rose to the occasion. They finally made their shots. And while they may not be in this position again, because you never know what the future holds, you don't know if you'll be available next time around, I think it's really good for the program and you can have a lot of confidence in that. I think for Team USA, it's mostly a matter of, I think this is probably their toughest challenge. I thought it was going to be Germany who was knocked out by France. And now Team USA, I think, is going to absolutely jump up and down on France because I don't think France is that good. And so what we're going to really remember is Team Serbia having given Team USA the closest battle of any team. And Nicole Eokich was part of that. So a lot of respect for both teams. I thought it was an absolutely awesome game. I have a lot more respect for the guys on Team Serbia all the way down the roster after this performance. I thought they got really good performances from so many players in this one of Ramovic in particular was great four of six from three point range. Eokich was 0 of six from three in this one, by the way, which again, another, I'm going to keep an eye on that. So Team Serbia's run towards gold ends with a lost team USA and a heartbreaker. Team Canada's run is over with Jamal Murray. So now we have to ask the question, okay, what's next? Because training camp starts in seven weeks from now. Some turn the page and get ready for the nuggets 2024-25 season. We'll talk about kind of turning that page, what's coming up for the nuggets, what to expect and kind of what we should expect for the guys that competed in the Olympics going forward. We'll do all that up next here on locked on nuggets. Today's show is brought to you by BetterHelp. BetterHelp is the best way for you to find therapy. What are your self-care non-negotiables? There's a lot to say when buying a new home or car, but really the first words you want to say are like a good neighbor, state farm is there, and trust me, as someone named Jake, that is a fact. That doesn't need to be complicated with a state farm agent. With so many coverage options it feels good knowing you can find what fits you because your situation is unique. So when you need help protecting the things that matter most, remember to say like a good neighbor, state farm is there. Back here on lockdown nuggets, thanks for joining us and making this part of your day. Appreciate you guys being with us. Carlos says there's still the bronze game. True. It's not over, over. And bronze is still important. Metaling is still really important. I'm not trying to deny that. It's more a matter of like, okay, one more game. More the bronze and then off we go. So I think it's going to be interesting to see over the next couple of weeks like what information we get at a camp. As far as a schedule goes, if you're new to this and you haven't been around for various nuggets seasons, one, welcome, two, hey, five issues in the house. What's up? Five issues is in the chat, along with Hurricane, who's going through it right now. So in the beginning, in the first week of September and really probably over the next couple of weeks, guys are going to start trickling into the gym and you'll start seeing workout videos from inside the practice facility. And then really September one is when guys really start to hit the ground running. Technically speaking, the nuggets can't hold a quote unquote practice until training camp starts. There's NBA mandated rules via the CBA, what's allowed, not allowed. It's like when you can work out and not work out for the NFL, it's the same kind of deal. You can't have non-Mandy workouts, but you can have guys in your gym. Players are always welcome in the gym and the coaches can definitely be there and talk with the guys. So you can kind of take that for what you want. And they'll mostly be open runs, like they'll play basketball, they'll work out, they'll get their stuff in based off of their training regimens that they're all ascribed to. And you will start to kind of hear who's doing well in those runs and who's not doing well in those runs. I don't expect to see any of the starters and really honestly until training camp. Murray's going to need the time off. Yogic, don't think anyone's going to be surprised that I don't expect yoke to be around until training camp begins. Aaron Gordon might come in, but you know, it's going to be Christian Brown. It's going to be those other guys. It will be very interesting to see if Russ shows up, like that'd be like an interesting thing is like if Russ gets into town early and decides to start working out with a new team, like right off the bat to get the young guys kind of on the same page and organized, that'd be really interesting. Other than that, it's going to be, you know, most of the young guys kind of working out, which should lead to some kind of interesting information that'll probably come out. And then as we get closer to camp, probably some of the starters will come in and start working out and playing. And then last week of September, it's going to be training camp and media day and then training camp and we're off and running. We have heard, this isn't confirmed, we have heard that the nuggets are going to hold a training camp in Denver this year, which isn't surprising given their overseas trip to Abu Dhabi. They don't want to pack more travel on top of it, but it is going to be a very different experience, especially because guys are able to kind of go home at the end of the day, and that removes some of like that close knit thing that you kind of want for a team to have. One of the reasons why teams go away on training camp is you have that bonding experience of being away from home. A lot of teams do this across sports where like you go somewhere and you participate in training camp, and that's kind of how you go about it is going to be very different this year. And it's like a little bit different from the perspective. Five ish says after seeing Yokish and Jamal in the Olympics, are you feeling better, worse, or about the same about the nuggets going into the next season? I think I feel about the same. I think, you know, Adam and Swipe and I were texting and I said, Adam was like, I've moved to 2.5 DEF CON with Jamal. He was at 3.5 a couple weeks ago when he and I did show or we could go when he and I did show. I'm at two, which is not good because one is imminent nuclear nuclear war. I'm I'm concerned at the same time I said this on Twitter, like I won't be surprised if Jamal drops 35 in the first week of the season. I don't know that all the time the stuff is completely linear where it's like he's out of shape and he's hurt and so this is what's going to happen sometimes it's like, yeah, that was all true. And then he got better. He took three weeks off and that's what he needed and then he was better or whatever it is that happens, but Jamal didn't look right in this run and that's very apparent. I know everyone's asking about the extension and they're going to continue to ask about it and there's going to be pressure to get that done before training camp because if it's not done before training camp, it's going to be to a we're just we have to ask about it and we have to the problem with it is like we have to ask everybody about it. Like if you're working on a story and you're like, you know, you have any advice for Jamal as he's working through, you know, that contract situation, like that's a reasonable question to ask, but it creates a distraction and so there will be a drive to kind of get it done. I will just tell you don't be surprised if like the full max is given. If they don't, then there'll be a signature kind of a sign of what they're expecting from Jamal and the fact that they're putting a little bit more pressure on him if it's not a fully guaranteed deal, but there's also I will say this, if they give him something like, oh, it's fully guaranteed three years with a fourth year option or four years with a fifth year option and the fifth year option is Denver's option, like it's a team option at the end. Like that'd be a huge concession by Jamal. If that were to happen still doesn't change anything for the next three years, like Jamal still fully guaranteed for a max contract that during that time and I don't see any way that he doesn't that he takes any sort of like significant reduction in pay. I don't think that's likely to happen because this contract is very important to him for his career, so that's going to be something I think to kind of watch and monitor as we get closer to training camp as well. I will be honest, like I'm really worried about both players given the workload. These guys played until, you know, they didn't play in the conference finals, but they played as close as you can to it. They were playing in mid to late May and then they had basically a month and a half off and then it was training camp for Olympics and then they were into Olympic play and then they traveled and played in the Olympics and now they have seven weeks off before training camp begins. It's just not a lot of time and like I have a lot of concerns about that, especially given that I wouldn't have as much of a concern to have we not seen what like if Jamal just struggled in the Olympics and he was fine in the playoffs, I'd be like whatever. He just didn't fit it like Olympic play was hard for him whatever he'll do better next time, but it's the carryover from the playoffs through the Olympics. I think as everyone's so concerned, which I think is reasonable. And then for Yokich, the last thing I have for Yokich is he gassed out in the third quarter of game seven and he was awesome in game seven, but he did gas out. Like we all know that. And so like he got worn down then, he had a bad second half here and now he's going right back in the training camp. And I just I don't know what they need. I don't know what that what those two guys need in terms of time off or how to give it to them because you what you can't do is you can't be like hey, let's give them the first month off. You can't do that because if you start out eight games under five hundred, you're buried and your entire rest of the season as guys get heard and the schedule and back to back to baba, baba, baba, you're chasing the whole way. So you can't just be like we're going to punt on that first third of the season. You can do that in the east, mind you, like the Celtics if they wanted to could literally be like, hey, we're going to sit Jason Tatum at Chris asked for Zingas and Jalen Brown the first 10 games of the season. And then just like pick it up and go and it'd be fine. The Nuggets can't do that in the west. That's not how it's built. So there are I think concerned, these are all things that we're going to have to keep an eye on. I'm curious about muscle watch with Peyton Watson. What kind of shape is he going to be in? Like what kind of growth is he going to have shown when he gets into training camp? Same thing with Christian Brown, same thing with Julian Strathor. These guys are going to have another year in strength and training and conditioning excited to see all that. Like there's exciting stuff coming around the corner too. It's not just anxiousness. But there's a lot of stuff that I'm going to be interested to see as we get little glimpses heading into training camp next month. On the other side, we already have a game on the schedule. Sean Strathor on the reported on the Christmas games. And guess what? Denver's got one. We'll talk about what that game is and why matters up next year on lockdown nuggets. Sports in the summer are awesome and you can bet on all sorts of things. NFL preseason started on Thursday night and get it on that. MLB season heading towards the playoff run. You got WNBA kicks back up after the Olympics. Lots of great games there. So much awesome stuff. Plus you can buy an NBA futures as well. Lots of stuff. I am deep in wind total analysis. I've worked through three divisions so far on my way. I already have my nuggets projection for the year. We'll talk about that in an upcoming episode. All that and more. And you can bet on that stuff at Fandall. This summer Fandall is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily. That's right. There's something for everyone every day all summer long. Get on over to Fandall.com and start making the most of your summer Fandall official sports spending partner of Major League Baseball. We'll be right back on lockdown nuggets. This is Jake from Lock Don. Lock Don has teamed up with State Farm to spotlight some of the greatest supporting players in NBA history. You may remember Ron Artes as an NBA All-Star in the NBA's defensive player of the year in 2004 or even for his name changes. First to meta world peace then panned his friend then meta sand deferred our test. Artes has always been a larger than life personality. So you may not expect him to play the part of a supporting player, but that's exactly what he did on the 2010 champion Los Angeles Lakers. After stops in Chicago, Indiana, Sacramento and Houston are tests signed with the Lakers with hopes of helping Kobe Bryant and the Lakers win a second NBA title in a row. In Game 5 of the Western Conference finals the Lakers and Suns were tied with three seconds to go before our test hit a shot at the buzzer to win the game and take a 3-2 lead. And in the 2010 NBA finals our test hit a dagger 3 with one minute left and the Lakers won the title. Even Kobe needed someone like our test every once in a while. Sometimes you and I need that kind of support too. Think of State Farm like a pivotal team player. When you need help protecting the things that matter most remember the jingle and just say like a good neighbor, State Farm is there. Back here on Lock on Nugget, thanks for joining us and making this part of your day, appreciate you guys being with us on a Thursday night heading into Friday, you will get a Friday show with Swipe-A-An Adam talking about all things from this game and everything else. So we have a game. The game is on the schedule. This will play the Suns once again on Christmas has become kind of an annual tradition. I think this is the third year in a row that those two teams will face off. But this time it will be in Phoenix. No Christmas Day game at ball arena. I know. That's a bummer. People were bummed because ball arena has been a great atmosphere for those games last couple of years. Two people were very excited about, three people were very excited about that news though and that's my wife and kids that were very me leaving last year for a mid-afternoon Christmas game did not go over well. Not fly with the family. So the Nuggets will play the Suns. I thought, I think it's an interesting choice. I get it, right? I don't think that wolves nuggets is so much a rivalry that it deserves that spot. The Suns game still has some bad blood. They want to get Kevin Durant on the schedule again so they put Yokech on there and honestly I'll say this. They put the Nuggets on there instead of OKC, they put the Nuggets on there instead of some other teams that they could have gone for in other markets. The Nuggets got recognition. Yokech got recognition. Yokech, it only took three MVPs but he's risen to the level to where he does get that kind of recognition and that's cool. Even if it's a road game, having a game on Christmas is still a really cool thing for this franchise. To be at that level of prominence, to be the team, the one the title two years ago that plays on Christmas every year, Yokech is a staple of that coverage. I think that that's pretty awesome. I think that's great. Sorry, I guess I was wrong. Last year we faced Golden State. I thought that. I thought, yeah, last year we faced Golden State is what Ish says and Swipe says the same thing. Nuggets played the Warriors. I could have sworn it was. They're all blending together for me. I am misremembering things. Regardless, it's cool that the Nuggets are playing on Christmas and I do get the Suns game. And LeBron will face off versus Steph Curry in the matinee game. They're going to milk the last of the LeBron and Steph years as much as possible. So that makes a lot of sense to put them in that kind of a marquee spot. Victor Wenman Yama and the Spurs take on the Knicks. I think that makes a lot of sense. Some people are confused. It's when be an MSG. That's not a really good play, honestly. Hurricane says Chris Paul play on the Warriors. So I confuse them with an odious squad like Phoenix, maybe fair enough. Chris and the Nuggets have had great Christmas games. Well, there was that pelican's game a couple of years ago that was rotten. That was not a good one to be at. Five ish says, yoga should be playing on Christmas for the rest of his career. Can't disagree. I kind of agree with that, at least for the rest of his prime. So we've already got that game on the schedule with it, which I think is cool to have. And like it's a signature of where the Nuggets are at in the NBA hierarchy. And bear in mind, like for as much consternation and concern as I think that there is internal and you're going to hear more of it, like be prepared. You're going to hear a lot of all the stuff that you've been worried about or that people on this show, Reddit, Nuggets, Twitter, everyone's been concerned. It's not like that's limited here. The national pundits are going to be concerned about them too. So you're going to hear a lot of questions of like, you know, I'm really worried about Denver this year. And I think it's fair to be concerned about them. I have kind of come to peace with the fact that no matter what my projections say like last year, yolks pretty much a 50 like he wins 50 games as long as the as long as two starters aren't missing the entire season, yolks going to win 50 games. And I kind of have to just like pencil that in and be done with it that at least 50 wins is going to be on the table for Nicole Yolkich and the Nuggets. Now, the question is how many games are the other teams going to win? Because like I have the Thunder winning a ridiculous amount of games, I have the Wolves winning a ridiculous amount of games and I have the Mavericks winning a ridiculous amount of games. Memphis could do it too. And I have the Pelicans really high. So how this all shakes out, things could be very interesting and it's getting come down to I think luck and injury, which injuries mostly luck and like those things will really kind of play out over the course of a season. But look, Denver can have a season where they're not as good, but their record stays a float and then the playoffs, they figure it out. The Bucks did that and honestly in 2021 when they won the title, they added Drew Holiday and that was a major change for them. That was an upgrade, but that was a major change for them and it took them really the whole year to kind of figure it out, but in the playoffs, they were dynamite. Question is, can Denver come out of this season better than they were to end last year? And that's a tough bar given how good that team was, that for all of the problems of them wearing out and how compromised they were, that team was still awesome. Like this was a great team and it's going to be a great team as long as Yokich is there. And I don't want to just say it's Yokich, you can't just put any four people around Yokich. We've seen that before. It does take Aaron. It does take MPJ. It does take a healthy Jamal Murray. It does take guys contributing, like you need guys to really contribute to this team. They can't just be bystanders. They can't just be passengers. And that's really important. And I think that's fair for people to ask for when we talk about the need for an all-star next in the color of Yokich. I think that's a maybe an all-star I think I do, I kind of think all-star is a little bit much because I'm not sure you're going to look like an all-star because Yokich gets all the credit. So you need to have players that feels like they're not just passengers riding along in Yokich's car. You want to make sure that they fit with Yokich. The Yokich is the engine and he's the one empowering things that they're not trying to drive their own agenda. But they do need to be active participants in the team's success. And I think there's a way for them to do that and they still have the capacity to kind of get there. Five ish says the Spurs getting a Christmas game is a sign the NBA is making its move to advertise when be more. I'd be curious how many national games the Spurs get? Probably a lot. I would bet a lot of those. I am going to be curious to this question you should answer in the comments at youtube.com/lockedonnuggets. How many games should Nikole Yokich play next season? I think that's a really interesting question, right, is like how many games should a Yokich play? He's going to want to play 82. He's going to play something close to 72. How many should he play? 60? 65? 70? How many games does he need off in order to make sure that he's got the energy to kind of last to the end of the season? And then that really brings in a different question when it comes to, "Okay, if Yokich is going to miss those games, who else can sit and win?" Because I think that's a really interesting question. Noam Chomsky says, "I still think the Nuggets will be a top four seed." Pretty likely, right? I don't know. The only reason I can see that the Nuggets wouldn't be a top four seed is if the rest of the West is just that good. If Zion Williamson is healthy and they trade Brandon Ingram and Dallas stays healthy and Memphis is able to keep their unit together and everything come, they just bounce right back. And OKC is as healthy as last year, and Minnesota, who Rudy Guabere and Mike Conley are getting up there. If they're all able to keep the net, that's the thing, is like you could wind up where it's like, "Oh, well, you were tied for the four seed, but you lost a tiebreaker and you fall to five or six." You can see that happening. Like if the Nuggets finish sixth next year, I wouldn't be stunned. If they finish seventh, I'd be surprised. But I wouldn't be surprised if they finished sixth. I'd be surprised if they finished sixth and weren't within a game of the four seed. That would be surprising to me. But it's also possible. That's how tight these things can wind up being. And hey, maybe they win 65 games. Maybe this is the best season in Nuggets history. That's also on the table because as much as we think we know, I've learned that in sports, there's always another plot twist around the corner. That's going to do it for this edition of Lockdown Nuggets. Thanks for joining us, guys. I appreciate you guys being with us. Swipe on Adam. We'll be with you tomorrow.
