love skip Bayless hate skip Bayless do what most of America does which is love to hate skip Bayless one thing is for sure North America skip Bayless was absolutely a pioneer in the world of sports media that is today's topic on the underrated pod and as always I am Dave DeBaugh coming to you from the heart of the Silicon Valley now a little earlier in the day and it's so funny where we actually get our news from these days Marcellus Wiley on his very own podcast basically came out and said that his sources at FS1 are telling him that tomorrow is skip Bayless's last day at undisputed I want to point this out right now I have not been able to actually get confirmation from Fox Sports on that that being said let's just assume that Wiley's report is accurate and even Wiley in his own podcast definitely had some some thoughts along the lines that maybe tomorrow wouldn't be his last day but let's assume North America for the sake of this conversation that tomorrow is skip Bayless's last day and if it is it's really interesting that the team over at Fox Sports is not doing anything at least it appears it's not doing anything to promote the fact that skip Bayless who is now 73 years old and is certainly a pioneer in the world of sports media is going to go out without a bang that is our topic today on the underrated alright I'm gonna play next for you some video from Stephen A Smith from about a week and a half ago he's got some thoughts it's about a 30 second Stephen A Smith spot all right let's go and roll it there's always pioneers and when we look at the world of podcasting and sports talk and what have you skip Bayless is one of the pioneers and let me tell you about something that I know for a fact better than anybody so many people pay too much attention wondering and lamenting what he said the hating on LeBron James the loving the love affair with Tim Tebow and you know his fixation on the Cowboys in a positive way where I'm the troll and all of this other stuff you know what you miss if he didn't do what he did how would we have been able to do what we do so if you will some kind words there from Stephen A Smith where as he reflects so to speak on skip Bayless and his place in the history of the sports media world now I will say this about skip Bayless skip Bayless was brought over to Fox Sports 1 actually to be the main person there and while things went well for a while as we all know all good things and in some cases all bad things and all things we love to hate do eventually come to an end and that's sort of where we're at with undisputed the ratings had been tanking for quite some time the divorce was Shannon Sharp which was more like a firing of Shannon Sharp than anything more like an executive decision made by the folks over at FS1 to keep skip over Shannon which as it turns out looks like a mistake basically what happened was the ratings tanked and the reason one of the one of the primary reasons or the beginning of the end so to speak of skip Bayless was around the DeMar Hamlin tweets now it is amazing that world that we live in today where a tweet can take you down that certainly wasn't something I would have written in anybody's year books back in high school when I was graduating I can confidently tell you that the sports media landscape as much as it's changed in the last 20 years as much as it's changed in the last 10 years it has changed significantly more rapidly in the last five years and one of the primary drivers of that is actually the athletes actually turning into the thing that they used once they used to love to hate which is the media just think I even build Belichick the number one hater of media actually is you're gonna join the media to some extent during the upcoming national football league season we've seen players actually create their own podcast create their own production companies podcast P has to be one of my favorite podcasts it's just absolutely fantastic you look at what Gilbert arenas is doing take take a look at what Pat McAfee is actually turned into in the last five years you know I brought up Marcelo's Wiley his own show has I think almost 200,000 subscribers on it look athletes have done a fantastic job actually embracing this digital transformation that our world is currently undergoing the ability to produce a podcast with video is so much easier today than it was eight years ago when Skip Bayless actually made his way to FS one what resonates with people over time does change if you will the product market fit of Skip Bayless started to dwindle over the years there's a certain brand of people that enjoy watching a skip Bayless day in and day out and that brand of people began to shrink and over time it shrank to the point where FS one was basically left with no choice this would not be happening if their ratings were steady and climbing even if it was just a slight climb it would not be happening right now the folks over at FS one who have done a fabulous job with the herd show call and call call and cow herd and the herd first things first which in my opinion is the best sports show on television Nick Wright a Broussard and Kevin Wild's just fantastic chemistry and it gets better it seems every week that they're on the air together so they haven't made a ton of missteps so to speak at FS one but the Shannon sharp thing was a complete misstep and we've seen how successful Shannon Sharp has been with his own podcast his own after our shows Shannon Sharp has totally blown up now if you take a look at Stephen A Smith and the folks over at ESPN and first take their show has certainly done very well for itself and its ratings have been climbing steadily year over year for the last five years and there's a reason for that what if they do over at ESPN first take they said we don't need a permanent number two we are going to have a rotation of number two people in that Max Kellerman seat as much as a lot of you out there enjoyed Max Kellerman the truth is ultimately what they've done at ESPN's first take works better now than it did before when it was just Stephen A and Max Kellerman now as for this style of of television that Skip Bales helped pioneer as for the world of podcasts which are really flaws as for all of this Skip Bales has certainly been a major pioneer in all of it and at the ripe old Ajax of 73 which is like the old 53 if you ask people I'm sure Skip Bales will resurface at some point but it is important to note the reason why Skip Bales's show had undisputed ultimately failed now look it didn't fail at the beginning it didn't fail in the in the middle and like all good things they eventually come to an end and that's really where we're at but this comes down to the product market fit of the audience and ultimately the Skip Bales audience became smaller it didn't become bigger all right I want to know what your thoughts are North America on Skip Bales potentially tomorrow being his last day at undisputed it doesn't appear that the folks over at Fox Sports are making a big deal about this it looks like they're I'm sure something will be said on the show if tomorrow is truly his last day what are your thoughts North America go ahead and drop your comments in all right so as for the underrated real quick just want to thank everybody for all of your support over the past year with our shorts and our long forms we cleared over 1 million views in the past 12 months which is a significant number I think for anybody so thank you for all of your support there for the underrated I am Dave DeBau wishing you all a tremendous rest of your sports viewing day to the guitar reps we go you
