It's the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Luis Severino helped lead the mess through their second shutout victory of the season on Saturday. Is he good enough to be the Mets ace in a playoff rotation? I'll discuss that in a ton of injury updates on today's edition. Lockdown Mets You are Lockdown Mets, your daily New York Mets Podcast, part of the Lockdown podcast network, your team every day. Hello to all you amazing Mets fans, you're listening to Lockdown. That's part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Thank you for making Lockdown Mets your first listen every day. Lockdown Mets is free and available on all platforms, including YouTube. Well the New York Mets got another great pitching performance by Luis Severino anchoring the front part of a shutout by the Mets. We'll talk about that game in the first segment, second segment, we're going to talk about a playoff rotation. Can it be headlined by Luis Severino? And who else do you trust to take the ball in a playoff game? So we'll go through that a little bit as well as talking about Kodas Senga's rehab start on Saturday. Then in the final segment, more injury updates beyond Senga, Starling Marte, Sean Reed Foley, Reed Garrett. I'll give you some updates on all of those guys as well as a little bit of a preview of the road ahead. So we will get into all of it before we do. I'm your host Ryan Fickelstein. If you want to find any of my work, follow me on X at Fickelstein Ryan. You can also find some of my writing at justbaseball.com where I work as the managing editor. Well on Saturday, the New York Mets, even up there, seriously against the Miami Marlins, but it was not pretty, the offense made us sweat. All game just could not put up any runs. So every single inning was a grind. Just even that's got those three outs without giving up a run, but they did it. And they did it thanks in large part to Luis Severino, who looked like the Mets ace again in this start. Last few weren't great. His warning us the Nationals prior to this wasn't horrible, gave up a couple and six and a third. But here that starting against the Pirates where he gave up seven, which was very unsevereignal like, and it just made you wonder, all right, what version of Severino or the Mets going to get in the second half? Because this is a guy that hasn't put together a full season in a very long time. So it was really interesting to see what his first start out of the break would look like. And he looked like the Mets ace right now. He was unbelievable throughout this start, allows two hits, walk three across six scoreless innings pitch, racking up seven strikeouts. And he got out of tough spots and a lot of different points in the game. First inning, he strands two, fourth inning was really tough. He with one out gives up a base hit to Jesus Sanchez, then gets a ground ball that probably never was going to be two, but Pete Alonzo tries to get the fourth out of second, makes a bad throw. Everybody's safe. So couple runs on could be a dicey situation, gets a comebacker and makes an exceptional play on it, leaps up, gets the fourth out at second, but you had runners at the corner. So a run stand and 90 feet away over there on third base and he's able to get the big strikeout to get out of that inning at a one, two, three, fifth inning. Then the six comes around a little bit dicey again with one out, Severino hits Jake Burger, and he gets a strikeout and he walks auto Lopez and he also threw a wild pitch in the next at bat. So he had runners at second and third, two outs, Nick Gordon up and Severino delivers another big ending strike yet to get through six. And then it was off to the bullpen and that was again very nerve-wracking because the offense just did nothing throughout this game. The only run the Met score came in the fourth inning where Pete Alonzo with one out had a double. So that started off a rally. Mark Vantos gets hit by a pitch, DJ Stewart walks to load the bases and the one run the Met score is on a ground out by Francisco Alvarez. They went up the middle, great play by Xavier Edwards sliding to make the stop sort of a backhanded flip the second, but there was just no chance to get Alvarez at first. They didn't even try to make a throw Alvarez was booking out of the box. The ball wasn't even hit that hard. So never really was looking like a double play ball. That allowed Pete Alonzo to score, but the Met stranded those runners there and the way they did was Jeff McNeil comes up and man, Jeff had a huge game on Friday night and he had an opportunity for another big moment as there's runners on and he ripped a line drive should have ended up down the first base line if it was a good year for Jeff, but it's not a good year for Jeff and instead it ends up right in the mid of Josh Bell. I mean that ball was crushed off the bat 101 off the bat should have been destined for the right field corner, but sometimes that's just how things go when you're not swinging it well. You just hit into some bad luck and that was one of many opportunities you can say where the Mets maybe ended up having some bad luck throughout this game. John Harper pointed this out and game one, the Mets had 14 hard hit balls game two. They had nine hard hit balls or 95 miles per hour plus. So a lot of well struck baseballs that just are finding a lot of Marlins clubs. Hopefully that can sort of turn around. We saw a couple more of those later in the game. First off though, fifth inning, the Mets had an opportunity where Lindor and Nemo each got on for JD Martinez. He rips one right into the glove of Jake Berger for a line drive double play. Jose Iglesias goes two for four on the day, OPS now over a thousand. One of those hits comes in the seventh inning and then he was going on the pitch on a pick off attempt. There was a lefty on the mound. So he was stealing right when he lifted the leg, starts going to second. Josh Bell takes the pick off throw, tries to go down Iglesias that second makes a bad throw. Iglesias ends up on third. Reds aren't able to bring him home. Night didn't come around Francisco Alvarez lead off walk. McNeil pops out Iglesias gets his second single of the day. Francisco Lindor rips one to the outfield, hits it very hard. Just not enough in that cavernous ballpark gets caught a little ahead of the warning track. Brendan Nemo rips a line drive to left field, thought that was going to land driving at least one did not Nick Gordon makes a diving catch. So just a rough game for the offense. And that leads you to the final nine outs of the game. How are the Mets going to navigate a one run lead? It was Jose Budo to Danielle Nunez to Edwin Diaz, which I think right now is probably the best the Mets can put out there. Phil Mayton did pitch the night before he's another good option late in games. But I really think that Budo and Nunez are the best set of men that the Mets have right now. This is where Budo as much as you can maybe make an argument that he might be better than one of the pictures in the Mets rotation. I would say of the six, Jose Budo has got to be better than one. He's better than Christian Scott right now because Scott still has to establish himself in his big lead career. I think Budo if you gave him 10 starts compared to Jose Quintana for 10 starts, I think Budo would turn into better results. Honestly, if Budo was in the Mets rotation, I could make a case that he'd be their number two or the number three. I think that's how good I still think he could be if he got that chance to start. But right now he's becoming invaluable to that bullpen. He works around a lead off walk with a couple of big strikeouts. Danielle Nunez in the eighth inning was even more dicey. He gave up two hits. They weren't really well struck, but still traffic on the bases and a one-nothing game is nerve-wracking and he got three huge strikeouts. And I love seeing the emotion on the ending ending strikeout from Nunez who is just really becoming so, so good for this Mets team. I think, what was I sorting recently? I was looking at, I want to say it was pitcher war since this whole run started and I might be wrong about this. Let me see if I can pull this that up really quickly, but according to Fangrass pitching war, I'm pretty sure Danielle Nunez is leading the Mets in war over this stretch. I'll look it up and I'll give you that in the next segment here. But bottom line, he gets to the ending and I think the best part of the day is Edwin Diaz comes on for the ninth and it looked easy. And that was such a relief after watching so many of those tough innings, I mean between the sixth inning, the really the sixth, seventh and eighth were all sort of nail biters. Ninth inning, Edwin Diaz comes in one, two, three frame and just made it look so effortless and that was much needed as the Mets hold on for a one-nothing victory to get back even in the series. And now it's up to them to win the final two games here and come out of Miami with a serious victory. And I hope that the offense is going to catch fire over these next couple of games. But we'll just have to wait and see on that. I'll talk a little bit about this series again in the final segment when I'm giving you all the injury updates and I'll sort of preview the next few games as well. But before we get into that, I want to circle back on Luis Severino. Can he headline a playoff rotation for the Mets and which other starters do you feel confident getting the ball in a playoff game? Now I did look up that stat on Danielle Nunez and I was right since May 30th, Nunez leads Mets pitchers in fan graphs, wins above replacement. So I mean, T has been the most valuable pitcher on the Mets in 23 innings. This is prior to today's game, had 2-3-5 ERA in that span, 1-2 games that was in 17 years pitch that he racked up those 23 innings, strikeout per 9 close to 11, walk per 9 at about 1 1/2, home run per 9 below 1, he has just been great. Second best in that span is Sean Maniah at 0.4, and then Jose Budo in 7 2/3 at 0.2 tied with David Peterson as well. So pretty crazy stuff that he has been that valuable. More valuable technically according to fan graphs than Luis Severino who had a 0.1 because he had a rough start in there, maybe a couple, 5, 4, 7 ERA during an eight-start stretch. That's not including the game today. And also baseball reference really does prioritize innings more than fan graphs. So I got to imagine if you looked at baseball reference, that would be different. But just interesting to note that one of these outlets has viewed Danielle Nunez based on their metrics as the most valuable picture on the Mets since May 30th. Now let's get into Luis Severino in this Mets rotation because Severino has been very good this year and really given the Mets length, that's such an important thing, especially with a beleaguered bullpen, which is always in a state of flux, Severino has gone at least six innings in each of his last eight starts, which is huge, and 10 of his last 11th. So he's always giving a length, he has a 3-5-8 ERA in the season, that's in 115 and 2-3rd innings pitched. He's averaging at least six per star and he's going to get 10 more starts this season if not 11. Severino is in line to pretty much get to 180 innings pitched outside shot, maybe at 190. I doubt he gets to 200 innings pitched because the Mets are going to a six-man rotation. That's going to cut off a couple of starts that might have pushed him over there, but you still look at the production, it's really good stuff from Luis Severino. The last time the Mets had a pitcher who got up to 180 innings was Chris Bassett in 2022. Marcus Drowman was one away in 2021 and then it was Jacob de Grom in 2018 and 2019, over 200 innings pitched in those back-to-back Cy Young years. Also he had Noah Cindergarten, Zach Wheeler, get over 195 in 2019, the year of the Mets rotation was remarkably healthy. So it's just interesting to see the amount of workload that Severino has taken on on a one-year deal. It has been a great contract and I think moving forward wouldn't be a bad idea to really re-up with Severino this offseason although that's a conversation for another day, but I wanted to talk about his ability to pitch in a playoff game. So I went through and I tried to see how is he fared against GoodLimes this year and the funny thing is the Mets haven't faced a lot of really good Limes. Now Severino has pitched pretty well, actually was more looking at the clunkers. I was like, are his bad starts all coming against Good Team and I didn't really find that. One of them was against the Brewers where he gave up three runs on 11 hits, that was his first start of the season. Another bad one so to speak, gave up four runs, walked six, that was against the Rays, he walked six, that was the lineup doing to him and that lineup was not swinging well at all at the time and I still don't think they're swinging particularly well, gave up five against the Marlins in May, we know what that lineup can do which typically is not a lot, Diamondback scored five off him, four of them earned, the Rangers scored six off of him, that's a lineup that could be very good, hasn't necessarily this year but they definitely have some ignitability to them. The Astros gone for four and the Pirates got him for seven. Overall though, if I'm really to look at what I've watched from Severino this year, he can have those starts where he is great and today was a perfect example of that. He has others where he's pitching the contact and some hits go against them and he gives up some runs but he still gives you some length. I don't think Luis Severino's an ace, I really don't. If you were to look at it from a scouting perspective where Christian Scott's scouting report says he has the ceiling of a number three starter and Mets fans freak out they can well house you the top prospect in the system but that's because a number three starter majorly baseball is really good like Freddie Peralta has been a number three starter this year, he's an ace but still you look at Freddie Peralta, let me pull up his numbers. I bet you it's closer to number three starter than a stuff this year. It's just what these guys are and number three starter is really good. A number three star is a guy that's given you quality starts most days. Yeah, you look at Peralta, he's their ace, he's got a 380 ERA this year so I think there's a misconception on what a frontline starter is, what a number three starter is and to say that sever is a number three starter is not a not but I do think that this version of Severino if the Mets were to sign him for on a three year deal or four year deal this off season, I would look at him moving forward as the Mets three starter and hopefully you can develop a brand and sprout to be better than that. Hopefully Kodai Senga can be healthy and he can be a frontline guy maybe Christian Scott can ascend and reach a ceiling even beyond what some scouts think. So I think again we throw the number three starter around and it seems like it's a demerit. I'm not saying that by any stretch and honestly I think a number three starter is perfectly capable of starting a playoff game for you because we saw the two teams in the World Series last year basically get it done with number three starters and I say that because Jordan Montgomery is the epitome of a number three starter and he was leading the Rangers in the playoffs last year Nathan Evaldi has risen his performance in the playoffs he's a really good playoff pitcher but I'd say for the most part he's sort of a mid-rotation number three starter. You look at the Diamondbacks, Merrill Kelley absolutely a number three starter Zach Gallin has competed for Cy Young's he has been you know in that conversation the last few years this year he's been hurt but he's maybe a step above all those other guys he actually didn't perform in the playoffs as well. So you really look at it you want your starting pitchers in the playoffs to be able to give you lengths to be able to withstand a rally in the inning and then come back and then throw a couple zeros up. I think Severino can do that. Who else can do that for the mess this season? Kodaz Senga made his final rehab start we hope on Sunday. It was a rough one though he was supposed to get the 85 pitches didn't quite get there had three scoreless innings to start but then everything fell apart in the fourth inning for him. By the end of the day he gave up eight hits walk three allowed five runs only struck out one in that fourth inning gives up a lead off double then a single then a home run then another double then another single then throws a wild pitch then walks a batter then gives up another another single it was six hits one walk they finally got him out of there so not the greatest memory to take into your first big week start of the season. I still think the match should slide him into the rotation because they need to shake off all that rest. They need to get him in mid-season form as quick as possible although if he doesn't recover well off of this start it could turn into a setback. I'm not going to say that that's going to happen here the velocity was down a tick. I imagine he's going to get inserted back into this rotation but can Kodaz Senga get himself by the end of the season to a point if the Mets are in the playoffs where you feel good about him taking the ball in a playoff game that's a massive question mark. So then how else do you get to that playoff rotation? It made me wonder do the Mets make a trade. But then I went to our article at justbaseball.com we ranked the top 10 pitchers who could move at this deadline the top 10 starters and our list was Garrett crochet number one Kevin Gosman a number two that's based on track record he hasn't had a great season but there is a track record the team's my bet on Jack Flaherty has been awesome this year in Detroit Chris Bassett another pitcher in Toronto that could get moved he's been very solid once again Nathan of all D we just talked about in Max Scherzer the Rangers sell those guys could be on the market both would be rentals Zach Gafflin Tyler Anderson Usek Akuchi and Eric Fetty last four games on it or last four names on that list Eflin Anderson kakuchi Fettie I don't see any of them as guys I want to hand the ball to an playoff game just wouldn't want to do it Eflin maybe a little bit but probably not Fettie okay but I still don't buy Eric Fetty you know the Mets were interested in them in the offseason I think there's going to be a ton of teams in his market at this deadline and I wouldn't pay the price to get him Scherzer and Evaldi I can't see the Mets calling the Rangers and the Rangers training Scherzer back to the Mets just don't envision that Evaldi would be great but he basically is going to be a free agent after this season there is a player option potentially or it's a vesting option I think it becomes a player option if he hits a certain amount of innings either way I think he's going to end up being a free agent so I think actually the option only vests and turns into it's a player option I'm remembering this now we had an article on this just baseball recently it's a complicated contract but if he hits I think whatever it is three hundred innings pitched over the last two years it becomes a player option but if he hits that amount of innings he's going to have proven his market enough to opt out of that option anyway so basically he's a rental Flaherty's a rental I don't see the Mets trading for a rental starting pitcher so then you're looking at Garrett Crochet Kevin Gosseman and Chris Bassett now you can make the case for Kevin Gosseman being able to start a playoff game and being really good but he has not pitched well this season bringing Chris Bassett back would be a level of security in your rotation but then there had to be another subsequent trade where maybe you're getting prospect capital back for a katana or a manaya and then just flipping those guys in the rotation and I still don't know how much of a you know positive mood that is I think it's mostly lateral I think Bassett's a really good pitcher but we remember him starting a playoff game for the Mets that's not necessarily exactly what you want and then Garrett Crochet is a pipe dream I don't see it so the point is for me the Mets still are not going to trade for a starting pitcher so Severino is one who are going to be the other couple of guys that can take the ball in a playoff game you hope it's Kodai Senka maybe Christian Scott makes a leap does he have the innings to go deep into October though that's a big question mark so I wouldn't count on it then you have Shamanaya ultimately if I had to guess today on July 21st my assumption would be if the Mets made the playoffs their playoff rotation would be Severino Senka Shamanaya and then maybe David Peterson funny enough David Peterson is the one that I can almost see himself actually you know pitching his way into that type of rotation in the playoffs it may be doing well but that is one thing that you just can't ignore with this team and you wonder how much that's going to factor into what the Mets decided to do with this deadline I think it means you have to be more aggressive with the bullpen to be able to shorten games in October so can you get a couple more arms in there can the Mets all of a sudden in August and September have a lights out bullpen I think they're going to have to and then rely on that bullpen to make a run being able to leverage their starter depth in October would be another way to be able to do things where all right you just got four innings from Shamanaya and you're pulling the hook because you had a lead well now you're able to go to you know Jose Buddha for two and then you're able to go to Daniel Nudnez and then oh wait you have Brandon Sproton the bullpen now and he is going to pitch inning so I think there's ways around it and this is a Mets team where you just get there and try to figure it out but they are going to have a playoff rotation depending on who they match up against but when they get to the point where they might face a Phillies or a Braves where they are going to be at a disadvantage for most of those games for Severino might just be the best option to Mets have but if he's your game one starter and Zach Wheeler is going on the other side or Max Freed's going on the other side you might be in a disadvantage at all times that's where we have to slug your way in a playoff situation but before we talk playoff she got to get there and there are a lot of injury updates that could play a role in what the Mets do at the deadline and they're road moving forward so I want to talk about some of those injuries in just a minute or so a word from our sponsors. a strong marty feels close to returning to play on friday he was allowed to begin baseball activities for the first time since he was shut down with that right knee bone bruise and basically that's just swinging off of a tee and playing catch so very low impact is not running yet um not uh you know facing live BP or anything like that but as he told reporters he said that he feels close yesterday after me with the doctors looking over my knee he gave me good news I'll continue to work out with the trainers but it's also about being able to catch the rhythm trying to get into a new rhythm he said the doctors said that the knee actually looks a lot better there's still a little bit of inflammation around there but it's one of those things that with proper training methods and all that it's going to eventually subside and then he talked about the injury initially said that it looked really really bad doctors told him that it was best to shut it down because his knee basically could have given out had he kept going and you know he they were surprised he was able to play through as much pain as he as he was to contribute because again they said that that bone itself could have given out that's like a ligament thing literally the bone like you could have had an injury that would have taken a very long time to recover so then that's real to catch you at the right time and now it's a waiting game and it's great that he's hitting off a tee and he's playing catch and he says he feels close but you still got to get into some rehab games you would think in the past Marte has gone straight from the IL right to the big leagues and he's one of those guys that's you know sort of a natural player that can maybe do it with a shorter amount of time but the Mets have to play this safe and cautious and I think watching Jeff McNeil play the outfit the last couple days that to me is indicative of what the plan is moving forward Tyrone Taylor has not gotten the start DJ Stewart has I think the interesting part of that is maybe the Mets are sort of locked into what Taylor is which is ultimately a fourth out builder for them DJ Stewart if you got the bat going there is that upside that could have also just been a matchup that they liked for whatever it was worth that the look back to see what he did against Roger Emunios the last time these two teams face and Emunios pitch maybe he got a big hit or a home run or something I don't know I don't think so because Emunios has just been carving the Mets this year but regardless I think the plan right now is Jeff McNeil as a starting outfit until Marte comes back even when he does I think that a lot of of stars should still go to McNeil I would almost just play Marte against lefties and ease him back yeah you're gonna give him some starts against righties but primarily I would have been playing maybe just a couple games a week to start because you want to protect him for potentially being able to play every day in the playoffs if you get that far and I think the Mets can win without strongly Marte they've been proving that Jeff McNeil is a good security blanket because it gives you good defense and he gives you some offensive upside that he's tapped into lately we'll see if that can continue to translate but I envision a Mets roster at some point where do you just do it's off and when Ben Gamble went up you off as well and I think Marte and Brett Beatty could be part of this team down the stretch because I think if Jose Iglesias is going to start at second base for you well now all of a sudden it might make more sense to have a Brett Beatty on the bench because Jeff McNeil is more an outfielder so now Brett Beatty is sort of your backup second baseman third baseman obviously Jeff McNeil would probably play second over Beatty but the point more stands you could get a better bat off your bench that you could hit in different spots you also in a game instead of having to bring in Tyron Taylor and then moving Jeff McNeil in the infield inside Iglesias the third for defense playing games you could just put Brett Beatty at third have Iglesias stay at second base where he's even better than he is a third although he's pretty much great wherever you put him so having Marte come back is a really good sign we've been talking about trades all week and there just isn't a clear fit to me Marte is the best player the Mets could have filling that role so hopefully they get him back and I think they're going to be very cautious so that he is right when it matters most this year but that's some definitely that is definitely a positive development now Sean Reed Foley is also making his way back he had a cortisone shot on June 24th started his throw program in early July apparently was about a week behind schedule through a bullpen on July 13th has thrown two more bullpen cents that was over the all-star break his schedule to face live hitters in live BP on July 22nd so that would be on Monday and they he'll go on a rehab assignment after that there is a chance that we see Sean Reed Foley back before the trade deadline I would think if not right after that Reed Garrett probably a little bit behind that he finally threw today for the first time but I think that's just playing catch he said that he couldn't have asked for a better day he said for day one first step couldn't ask for a better day he's hoping for a quick ramp up and return but again I think got to play a cautious cross windows if there are a lot of cold water on that was that we got to take our time with everything else so the Mets will get Reed Foley and Garrett back this year and that is a big addition or those are two big additions and honestly if you look at where they're at right now with Budo and Nunez and Matan Garrett and Sean Reed Foley with Diaz I mean you're starting to get a pretty good bullpen not to mention Shintaro Fujinami continues to look good into minor leagues so he's an option you could just see them at Stan Patton do nothing I still think you add arms to that bullpen and look if it gets to a point where some guys who aren't performing end up in the minors or DFA to Sean Reed Foley comes off the IL and he has some clunkers and you made some trades of the deadline then Garrett's ready to come back and you have to DFA Sean Reed Foley you got to do what you got to do but I don't think that you can just count on Garrett and Sean Reed Foley to be your bullpen additions as well as Shintaro Fujinami I still think he got to add but it is good to know that there is some help on the way last thing to talk about I failed to mention this on yesterday's show I was surprised today um when her own line of graphic came out and I saw Severino's pitching I have uh our social media coordinator Tyler Antonelli who does those for me and I was like wait Severino's pitching I totally missed it because I was at the game on Friday night that Quintana got bumped because he was sick so I apologize that I missed that came home recorded never caught it for whatever reason so now Jose Quintana is expected to pitch on Tuesday that means everybody got bumped up so Christian Scott's gonna start on Sunday David Peterson on Monday then it'll be Quintana and Manaya hopefully in that series against the Yankees so we'll see Christian Scott in a big swing game of this series try to deliver and get his first victory of his big league career I'm rooting for him I'll be on a plane for that but uh actually I might be landed by then so hopefully I can watch some of that game uh and then also Sanga should be able to return if they're not gonna give him another rehab start on the 26th that's important to note because that means that Christian Scott even with starting on Sunday can get five days rest before his next start so by having a pitch on Sunday you can go to again Peterson Quintana Manaya back to savvy Kodai Sanga on Friday and then Christian Scott could go on Saturday or they could pitch David Peterson on a regular rest slide him in there to break up some of the righties in which case your six-man rotation for the rest of the season would go Severino, Sanga, Peterson, Scott, Quintana, Manaya I think it's a pretty good way to line him up anyway so we'll see how all this continues to develop on that front and I will be covering it on the road so I wanted to let the audience know real quick before we close if you watch on YouTube the show will still be there but it's going to be audio only throughout most of this week I am going to Disneyland my
