Locked on Met is free and available on all platforms, including YouTube. We got a fun show today. Could Peter Lanzo and Juan Soto trade places in free agency? I'm going to let the scenario where that actually could happen this offseason. We'll talk about that in the first segment. In the second segment, I want to talk about if that happened between what the contracts would look like and how Met's fans would process getting Juan Soto, but seeing Peter Lanzo in the Yankees uniform. Then the final segment, give you a little series preview that lies ahead at Met's versus Yankees. And also talk about the injury to Charlie Marte, as it appears like he is heading towards the IL. Before we get to any of that though, I'm your host, Ryan Finkelstein. If you want to find any of my work, follow me on exit, Finkelstein and Ryan. The Subway series starts today the first of two games against the New York Yankees. And I thought no better time to talk about a topic I've had on my mind for a while. Could Peter Lanzo and Juan Soto trade places in free agency? And this is actually a story that I'm gonna be writing about for justbasible.com that's gonna go up today as well. I've been thinking about this one for a minute because I can really see a scenario where this crazy idea actually happens. And I hope there's some Yankees fans tuning into this video today. Hey, you might call me crazy, you might say I'm nuts, but let me just lay out the scenario that I think is realistic where this actually happens. And look, I'll be honest, I don't even love the scenarios in Mets fan because the idea of Peter Lanzo in a Yankees uniform is pretty tough for me to stomach. But here's how I can see the whole thing playing out. And it all comes down to Steve Com. Because I don't even care how much you're buying into this Mets team or not with them being hot lately. There is no world where Juan Soto makes a baseball decision to sign with the New York Mets over the New York Yankees. I am not foolish enough to suggest that. But Juan Soto was represented by Scott Boris. Scott Boris clients typically take the most money that's offered to them. And this guy is Boris's prize client. This is the one that's gonna allow him to hold that record again for the biggest contract in some way, shape, or form, whether that is largest total money ever given out, gonna be tough to top $700 million granted. Maybe they're looking at the actual present day value of the contract. Joey Autani's was 460 million around there. So can they edge that out? The starting price might be $500 million. And the Yankees might happily pay that. But you have to wonder with Aaron Judge on the books, Garrett Cole, all these other high-priced players, Carlos Rodin and others, can they afford Juan Soto too? And will Steve Cohen make it very hard on them? One of the things that I'm mentioning in this article that I'm writing right now about the situation is this is the perfect scenario for Scott Boris. And in some respects for the New York Mets if they really want this play. Because Scott Boris, his oldest tactic that has been phased out a little bit is he used to go over the head of the GM in the front office and he'd go right to the owner. And now there are owners who have blocked Scott Boris. They can't help themselves. They don't wanna be swindled. So there's a lot of owners in baseball that do not even open a dialogue with Scott Boris anymore. Steve Cohen on the other hand was asked about this in the off season, I believe some point leading on might have been spring training. And he said that he welcomes the conversations with Scott Boris. You know, he thinks it's a fun dialogue to have. I don't think that means that Steve Cohen's gonna go over the head of his front office. Who knows what happened with Carlos Correa? And if there was ever a time where Steve Cohen might have done that, the two o'clock in the morning, Carlos Correa signing could have been in. But with David Sterns in place, I don't think that Steve Cohen is handing out any contracts that his baseball people aren't signing off on. But will Steve Cohen be in the process for Scott Boris free agents this off season with Juan Soto and Pinalonzo both being represented by Boris? You betcha. And if he decides that Juan Soto is the piece and the Mets front office signs off on that as well, that they want to pay her Juan Soto, the Francisco Enduring Brennan and Emo and make that the core of the New York Mets for the foreseeable future, then they might go very hard to make this happen. And if they keep pushing the chips forward and saying, look, we'll top that off or that off or whatever it is, and it gets to an astronomical level that the Yankees aren't willing to match, I do see a world when the Mets could pry Juan Soto from the Yankees if they're willing to pay for it. Now here's where the trading places comes in. If the New York Mets meet that exorbitant cost and they decide, okay, we're all in on Juan Soto. For one for the Mets and to say, hey, keep Pete and sign Soto, I imagine that number on Juan Soto is gonna be so high that it's gonna be hard to stomach much more high-priced players in general on the New York Mets moving forward when you already have Lindor making $34 million and you could have Soto making God knows how much money. I don't see both of those things happening at the same time. And also not to mention that from a Mets perspective. If you do have Juan Soto locked up for 13 years or whatever it is, you still have to think about the other prospects that are coming along and also acknowledge that Juan Soto could one day be a DH. Pete Alonzo could one day be a DH. I don't know if you want to tie up that much room into two bat first players. I know Soto's played better defense this year. I know Pete Alonzo as well at first base has been solid this year, but I just can't see where all of that happens. So if it's one or the other and the Mets are gonna choose one of course, they'd prefer Juan Soto just as a player. We'll talk about the contracts more in the next segment. But in this scenario, the Mets land Juan Soto, here's where the trading places comes in. If the New York Yankees are looking to now replace Juan Soto's production in the life, they're not gonna do it alone with Pete Alonzo. But if Juan Soto gets a contract that is three times as large as the one that they could give to Pete Alonzo to get him to play first base, maybe they consider that. Maybe they'd look at Anthony Rizzo that can get out of his contract. I know Ben Rice is up right in the after the Yankees playing some first base. Who knows if he's in the answer long term, way too soon to tell on that. But you compare the two guys that had the rookie home run record in New York, Aaron Judge and Pete Alonzo in the middle of that lineup. And Alonzo could be your first baseman for the next, whatever it is, five to seven years. There is a world where Pete Alonzo goes to whatever team doesn't sign Juan Soto. If it comes down to Soto is gonna be in New York. Who knows if there's another team out there that I'm not thinking about, whether it be the Red Sox, the Dodgers. I don't know who else is in the Juan Soto business. And I don't know what else is in the Pete Alonzo business. You can say the Cubs or whatever other team might be interested in Pete. But I really do think this might come down to a scenario where Soto's gonna sign with one of these New York teams and Scott Boris will funnel Pete Alonzo to the other one. I also think that the more likely scenarios, Juan Soto ends up back with the Yankees and Pete Alonzo ends up back with the Mets. But I do envision a world with these guys trade places. And I don't know how it feels in Mets fan that happened. I wanna talk about that side of it in the next segment here. Also touch on the contract situations. Talked about this with Pete, but I wanna go through the numbers on Soto. And what really is the better deal for the Mets? We'll get to that in just a minute. First though, a word from our sponsors. All right, so how much money is one soda gonna make? We really don't know. It depends on what he does this season but just a general outline here. Bryce Harper got 13 years, $330 million. The average annual value on that contract was $25.4 million around there. Showy Otani already mentioned 10 years, 700 million. He had 680 million deferred. That took the present day value of the contract down to around $460 million. His average annual value hit for the Dodgers when it comes to luxury tax is $46 million. So one soda is going to top one of these numbers. Maybe it's total years. Maybe he gets 14 years instead of Harper's 13. Maybe it is total dollars and he gets a deferred contract. He makes 701 with a ton of money deferred. Sort of doubt that one. Maybe it's topping the $460 million of the present day value of Showy Otani's contract. That's where I probably think it ends up coming in or maybe it is just eclipsing the average annual value of $46 million per season. So whether that's him starting at $47 million a year, whether it's a $500 million deal, he's going to make a lot of money. I would say it's possibly 10 years for 70 if it's just passing that AAV line, but more likely they're going to use the fact that he's going to be 26 years old when he starts this contract. He's 25 now and he's going to get a 13 or a 14 year deal, probably north of $500 million. If it's 13 years, 500 million, they're looking at 38.46 million a season. And he would be on the Mets or the Yankees through his age 38 season. Now, Piedalonzo, I talked about his contracts on a show last week now. What I would do if I was the Mets and I would offer Piedalonzo a seven year $200 million deal with $84 million deferred. Essentially what that contract would do for the Mets is it would basically have a Lonzo sign for the same reported seven years, $158 million that he signed for, or that he signed for, that they offered him last year at the trade deadline. So you know that's the number of the Mets who feel comfortable with, it would get Piedalonzo over $200 million. The AAV of that contract would come down to $22.6 million per season, which is a lot more affordable when it comes to trying to build around a Lonzo, Lindor, Nemo, et cetera. If Soto got 47 million a year, you're talking about $25 million of difference that you could pay for another player. If you're talking about something closer to $38 million, it's $15 million difference. The question is, is one Soto $25 million or $15 million better than Piedalonzo per season and then also the risk on a longer term deal? Ultimately, in a vacuum, yes. Lon Soto is a better player and if the Mets can get him, you gotta be all in on it. But if this scenario played out and Piedalonzo ended up on the Yankees, I don't know about you other Mets fans out there and I'm gonna put a poll about this on our YouTube channel today, but I personally would not wanna see it. If you had to ask me right now, what would I prefer to have happened? And I know I'm crazy for saying this, it's a hot take. Would I rather see Piedalonzo sign with the Mets at the whole contract I just laid out? Okay, so it's a relatively team-friendly deal for Piedalonzo to stay with the Mets for the rest of his career. Or see Lon Soto sign for that number, but the caveat is Lonzo's with the Yankees. I'd prefer to see Lonzo with the Mets and I would say goodbye to Lon Soto. I know I'm nuts for that, but that's the hard strings of a fan that maybe I just can't shake. Because to me, a Lonzo finishing his career in a Yankees uniform, hitting a 500th home run in a Yankees uniform, going down as a Yankee, not a Mets, that'd kill me. It just would. Now, if you told me that you could sign Lon Soto and Piedalonzo signs with the Cubs, I might change my tune a little bit because Lon Soto is clearly the better player. But it's just interesting how these guys are gonna be connected and free to see whether my scenario happens or not here. Two Scott Bors clients that are at the top of the market. You look at this market when it comes to position players, it's Lon Soto, Piedalonzo, Alex Breggman, Willy Adamis. And then pretty much everybody else. I mean, Cody Bellinger could opt out of his contract. There are some other guys that could hit the market. Christian Walker might be interesting, but of the top tier of the guys that are gonna potentially get nine figures, there's really four names. And the biggest two are Soto and a Lonzo, and they're both represented by the same guy. That's what's gonna make this free agency so fascinating. As the Mets are gonna be on the loop for both of these guys, they're gonna be in the conversation. I'm sure on these two top free agents, and I don't know which one they ultimately land. If I had to guess, again, my assumption would be Piedalonzo. It's gonna end up staying with the New York Mets. And I would think Lon Soto ends up staying with the Yankees, but in free agency, absolutely anything can happen. So it's gonna be really fascinating to see how it all unfolds. And it's just another little wrinkle to Lon Soto stepping up to an at bat, at City Field. There's gonna be Yankees fans there, of course. But there's gonna be that, if there's a Yankees fan sitting next to a Mets fan during the game, that's gonna be talked about. It's going to be talked about for sure. And the focus is solely gonna be on Lon Soto. But I just, I can envision a world where the New York Yankees take advantage of that situation. They end up with the better contract in the sense that it would be shorter, less money on an average annual basis. And Piedalonzo in that ballpark probably does a lot of damage. I can just see it happening. So just look down the little footnote to what's gonna be a really exciting series ahead. I wanna preview the Subway Series next turn and also talk about Strolli Marte who appears to be heading towards the IEL. So we'll get to that in just a minute. You'll get updates from me. I need some something breaks on the Mets. So tonight, I sent out a text. Charlie Marte appears to be heading towards the IL with bone inflammation in his right knee. And then I went through a series of the options to replace them and the insiders were the only ones that got that information until, of course, you tune into the show. We'll talk about some of it now. But this is the place to go for all the latest on the New York Mets. So if you want to be a locked on Mets insider, find the link in the episode description. Go to subtext.com/lockdownmets. All right, so there's a couple things that happen that we've been sort of discussing over the last few days. On yesterday's show, I talked a lot about the Edwin Diaz situation. And if you want to hear about why I believe Tyler McGill will get optioned, you can go back and listen to yesterday's show that allow the Mets to get an extra lever in the bullpen. He has officially been suspended. I don't imagine the Mets will appeal it. So Diaz out for 10 games, they could option McGill, or even after David Peterson makes his start on Tuesday, they always could then make the decision to option Peterson, hang on to McGill, get an extra arm in their bullpen. We'll see how they decide to maneuver that. They also could just put strongly marty on the aisle. And I believe they could call up a reliever in its place. There is a maximum rule on your roster as far as how many pitchers you can have, which is 13. But I don't think that just because you have a pitcher that's unavailable, you all of a sudden can't carry 13 pitchers. So I believe the Mets wanted to, they could just play a man down on their bench and they just add a reliever, they can just add a coal solcer and that's it. I think because marty is gonna be out for some time, you wanna make a move here. You wanna get another position player on your bench that can help you in some way. And obviously the idea would be to get someone that could compliment the situation on right field, which for right now would look to be a platoon between DJ Stewart and Tyrone Taylor and right. The problem with that platoon is that Tyrone Taylor has not hit left-handed pitching this year. And obviously DJ Stewart has not either. Both of those guys are better against righties. So who is the right-handed bat that you can stick in right field that can platoon with Stewart? Now a lot of good options here. So I'm gonna run through them real quick. We've talked about them in the past, but still. You have a little critter. He's got a 1.05, or excuse me, 1.045 OPS against left-handed pitching this year. Any OPS over 1,000, it's great. But he doesn't have any experience playing right field. So I don't think it's gonna be a critter, although you can make the argument for him. He has 16 home runs in triple L this year. Now, the part of this with Ritter is the same case I'm gonna make in a second with Brett Beatty, or it would more be about sticking Jeff McNeil to right field and have Ritter factoring in at second base with Jose Iglesias. The problem there you say, all right, well Ritter matches lefties, so does Iglesias. And he's been doing it at the big league level. So it just doesn't fit at second base as the platoon partner with Iglesias. That's why I don't necessarily see that one. It could be Trace Thompson. I talked about this on yesterday's show as well. Terrible splits against left-handed pitching. He's got reverse splits. So he doesn't compliment your situation and right. It could be Ben Gamble, who has been the best outfit of the Mets have had in Syracuse this year. He has a 961 OPS, 846 OPS against left-handed pitching. So you could add him, come up, and honestly he could be your starting right fielder. Like Ben Gamble might be better than DJ Stewart, for all we know, but that's an option the Mets might go to. The other one that I actually think could be likely is Mike Brasso. A utility man doesn't have any time in left field this year, but he did play some right field in Milwaukee. So Stearns has gone to that card before. He's hitting 360 against left-handed pitching in AAA. Brasso could make a lot of sense because he could fill a lot of different needs. Stick him in right field some if you wanted to. He can really play all over the diamond. So that is a piece that I would be sort of leaning towards as one of the more likely. But I still hold what I said yesterday to be true. I believe Brett Beatty is going to come back and he's going to give you another option at second base. Now he's played the position a little bit. It could be mostly a glacier set second, but you might see some of Beatty there. But really it would give you another option at third base. You could go to Beatty at the end of games defensively. And also you look at Mark Viantos' splits. He has been far better against left-handed pitching than right. I still think he's got to start five out of every six games. But you could spare him a little bit with Brett Beatty and then make Mark Viantos a bat that can come off your bench, late in the game against a lefty in a key spot. We've seen how that platoon between those two guys can work very effectively. Meanwhile, Jeff McNeil would sort of be your right fielder along with DJ Stewart. I see a world that actually makes a lot of sense because Jeff McNeil would probably be the best defensive option the Mets could have right now and right outside of Tyrone Taylor. So I think ultimately right field is probably going to be covered by some combination of Stewart. McNeil and Tyrone Taylor. I believe that's what's going to happen here. And I think who they call up, whether it be Brasso, Beatty, Ritter, any of those guys are going to more factor into the infield mix and just give you another bat off the bench. The Mets have a lot of options though that they can go to here. And we'll learn on Tuesday, which route they decide to go. Again, it could just be, hey, let's just bring a pitcher up, play short-handed on the bench and roll with that for a little bit. So we'll see what they decide to do here. All right, so now let's preview this series. The New York Yankees coming into town sort of, going across to the other borough to face the Mets at Cityfield for a two-game subway series. I liked it when they went back and forth. There's going to be two games at Yankee Stadium. Let's just look at that today, I think it's in July. So we'll see that. I liked when it was all in one series or if they did one here, one there. I feel like that would be super cool. Regardless, you get two at Cityfield. And the Yankees are a little bit cold. They start off the month, winning nine of their first 11 games. Since then, they've lost seven of their last 10. They've lost three series in a row. They lost one for the Red Sox, then to the Orioles, and they just lost one to the Braves. If you look at that, one of two ways. One sense, maybe you're getting them at the right time. Hopefully, this continues for them for two more games. The Mets can at least take one, if not both, and you're just feeling great. On the other hand, it's the Yankees who have the best record in baseball the last time I checked. See the number of the Phillies. Let me look really quick and make sure I'm not talking out of school there. You got the Yankees, 52 wins. It's the same record. Oh, no, no. Phillies are two up in the loss column. They have 26 losses. Yeah, he's at 28 losses. They both have 52 wins. So, best record in the American League. They're due to snap out of it very soon, and you got some tough pitching matchups in this series. You got to face Garrett Cole. Now, Garrett Cole is making his second start of the season. Last time out, he only went four innings. So, is it Garrett Cole at 100 pitches? I don't necessarily think so, but the Yankees have a good bullpen. So, it doesn't necessarily matter. Garrett Cole can still win a game, go in five innings. I've shut out ball against the Mets and handing off to the bullpen. If they can jump all over, David Peterson will be starting for the New York Mets. Now, Peterson is a guy that is in some ways, potentially pitching for his spot a little bit. We don't know what they're going to do as it just alluded to. There's a world where they're going to delay that decision. Call up, solcer now, or whatever it is, or not even call up earlier. Call up the position player and go and man shorten their bullpen for a game and make that decision after Peterson makes his start against the Yankees. But I've liked what I've seen from David Peterson this year. I think he's looked really good. He's managed his pitch count a lot better than Tyler McGill has gone deep into games. So, I'm looking forward to seeing what he does against a very tough lineup for the Yankees. Game two, Luis Heale versus Chaminaya. Heale is one of the front runners for rookie of the year right now. You could maybe say he is the front runner. Also, a guy that, until his last start, was sort of inner circle as far as potential starters for the all-star game. Might still get that nod. I think more likely he's just an all-star. But he had a 2.03 ERA, 2.03 ERA, before his last start. He went out against the Orioles, gave up, seven runs on eight hits, two walks, only got four outs in the outing, was knocked out in the second inning. It saw the ERA climb up to 2.77. So, we'll see if Heale is his typical dominant self that he's been throughout large portions of the season, or maybe this is a little bit of a skid here for a rookie that the Mets might be able to take advantage of. Here's what I will say about this Mets team. Dylan Cease, John Gray, Shoda Iminaga. They have faced some really good starting pitchers, even Javier Asad on Sunday night baseball. They faced some really good starting pitchers who've had great success this year, and they've made them look bad. So, I'm not gonna count this Mets team out. I think this Mets team can contend with anybody the way they're playing, even without Owen Diaz, even without Starling Marte. I think the vibes are great right now in that clubhouse. And if you go out and you win game one of this series, you can keep rolling. I don't think I mentioned this. Sean Manaya will start game two of this series. Funny enough, I don't know if I like either of these pitching matchups from the Mets, but I could see both Peterson and Manaya being the guy that shocks us. It goes like six or seven scoreless, or it just has a horrible start. For some reason, I don't see the middle happening, which it probably does. These guys might just give you five innings, give up two runs, and it ends up being down to the bullpen. But I just, I look at them as, it's either gonna go great, it's gonna go horribly, and we'll see how it actually ends up shaking out. And the bullpen situation is what's gonna really scare up all the Mets fans watching these games, because if you're clinging to a one-run lead late and it's regarit against Aaron Judge, I mean, I know he just retired, but the Yankees win! I mean, that might be what happens there. If it's Aaron Judge with a run-on first, regarit on the mound, one-run lead, don't love it. And that's not a knock-on-garit. It's a knock-on-garit in the closures role against the best player in baseball. That's right, I do think Aaron Judge is the best player in baseball, even better than Mr. Show Hayo Tani, but that's a debate for another day and probably for a different show. Anyway, that's gonna be all for today's edition of Locked On Nets. We'll be breaking down game, one of the Subway series tomorrow, and all of the rosters, because there's gonna be stuff that happens with this roster, with Diaz heading to his suspension, and Mark heading to the IL.
