It's the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. To the New York Mets, all of a sudden have the best lineup in the National League. It sure looked like it on Friday against the Cubs. We'll talk about it on today's show. You are Lockdown Mets, your daily New York Mets Podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team, every day. Hello to all you amazing Mets fans, you're listening to Lockdown Mets, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Thank you for making Lockdown Mets your first listen every day, Lockdown Mets is free and available on all platforms including YouTube. This lineup was back at it on Friday, piling on 11 runs with most of those coming against Shoda and Menaga. I'll talk about that game in the first segment, in the second segment, I want to talk about this offense in June, has it been the best in baseball? We'll go through it then in the final segment, we're going to talk some prospects that update you in all the top hitters in the Mets farm system. Before we get to any of it though, I'm your host Ryan Fickelstein, if you want to find any of my work, follow me on X at Fickelstein-Ryan, you can also find some of my writing at justbasebo.com. Where I work as the managing editor. Well, the New York Mets go into Chicago and what do they do in the first game of this series? They pile on 11 runs and absolutely embarrass the Cubs and Shoda and Menaga on their own field. What a game. What a game. In Menaga, the last time he faced the Mets go seven shutout innings, but this time around, he gave up three runs before he got an out. Francisco Endora lead off double Brandon Nemo draws a walk. Here comes JD Martinez with no place to put them and he gets a pitch to hit and a two one count does not miss it, crushes a three run homer and just like that, your Mets are up again big early in the game. We have seen this team time and again over the last couple of weeks. Jump all over guys. Dylan Sees, John Gray, I mentioned that on yesterday's show where you look at the starting pitching match up of the day and for this one, you see in Menaga, a guy who is the clear favorite to win the rookie of the year this year. He is one of the candidates to be a side young or at least he was prior to this start because all of a sudden the year I jumped a full run by facing the Mets. And on the other side, the Mets at Jose Quintana, who has not pitched well this year overall. But there you go, three nothing Mets. There was one moment though, and I have to acknowledge this, a shout out to my dad and my brother-in-law, they were at Rigley Field for the game. I talked about this on yesterday's show at the very tail end. I wasn't sure if the Finkelstein luck was just myself or if it extended to my dad because I went to one game in Miami this year that he was not at. And that's won that game. The two of us together went to a couple in DC and that's won both of those. Did they also won the spring training game that we went to this year? Not that that really matters. But here was an opportunity to see, this is the first time my dad was going to a game without me. It's a pretty good game. Pretty good game. Here's the rabbit's foot. And also, even bigger shout out to my brother-in-law Brad because he went to a Cubs game rocking a bright orange Franciscal Indoor suresy and if you don't know, my brother-in-law he has been born and raised in Chicago, Chicago area. So he is a Bears fan, a Black Hawks, Bulls, mostly Bears from those three teams and was a Cubs fan until he started listening to lockdown Mets back in 2019, an avid listener of the show and I have turned him. So to see him going to Wrigley Field with my dad wearing a Mets shirt, that was a proud accomplishment for myself there. But great game that they got to watch. I did talk to them after and they were saying, "Oh man, it was just carefree." We weren't stressed at all. So I said, "Dad, you're telling me in the bottom of the first inning when Jose Quintana is in a bases-loaded situation, you weren't nervous," he says, "Oh, no, no, I was nervous." And so that was the one moment because Quintana walked the lead-off man, Mark Vientos makes an error on a would-be double play ball, then Cody Bellinger gets a hit to load the bases. And that was the one point in the game where you thought maybe the Mets are going to lose. Only time. But then, Quintana gets another double play ball, throw from Vientos wasn't great, but Jose Iglesias made a nice play on it coming out of the bag. His throw to Alonso even worse, pulling him off the bag, but Alonso did a great job of this fieldwork to hold on to make that double play. Then Quintana gets the final out of the inning, a strikeout, and he's out of that jam, and then he gets more up support in the second. You had Francisco Alvarez lead off to getting with the home run. Jose Iglesias, who had an unbelievable day, went four for four in his first four at bats. He got a knock. Bader and Lindor each got out, but then Brandon Nemo had a two-run shot, and the Mets were up six to one. They didn't really look back from there. They tacked on a run in the third on an RBI single from Iglesias. In the fourth, they jumped all over Eminaga again, the top of the line up Lindor with another double. Brandon Nemo and JD Martinez each singled with Lindor scoring on Martinez a single. There was another run against Eminaga, and at that point, they went to the bullpen. Now, there were still surmonters left on from Eminaga, and so his book was not closed. The Mets got both of the men, Sterling Marte, drove in one with the ground at where he beat out a double play, and then Iglesias drove in two more to make it 11 to one for the Mets. Eminaga goes three innings plus three batters, allowed 11 hits. Mostly allowed this year, I think, was eight against the Brewers when they hung seven on them at the end of last month. This was a career high on both hits allowed and runs allowed 10 earned runs, also a home runs allowed, three home runs. A guy that outside of that start against the Brewers has allowed two earned runs or less in every single outing this year, and the Mets just made him look extremely hitable. Now, was he on? Absolutely not. I mean, that's pretty clear. He was leaving a lot of pitches out over the heart of the plate, but at the same time, there were some good takes in there from the Mets to get themselves into hitter counts where they were, you know, not chasing out of the zone on that riding fastball that can be up and could be really enticing for hitters. They were not going out after that splitter, although the splitter wasn't great, but it was just a great effort, saw it at bat, their saw it at bat, their saw it at bat. That's what we've been seeing with this Mets team, and that's why they have been so hot. We'll talk about it in the next segment, where they're at for the month of June, because you really can make an argument that they've been the best offense in at least the National League, if not major league baseball, and there is some staying power here for this team to continue to be a relative juggernaut offensively. So we're going to go through that a little bit in the next segment, but I want to give all the props Jose Quintana. Yes, it was a lopsided game, but it's still good to carry your start through the sixth inning and into the seventh to help that bullpen get a day off to use as few arms as you can. And that bullpen is a big win and Quintana was able to get 19 outs in this game allowed in one run, it was unearned in that first inning, Mark Santos made that error on the double play ball. And so other than that, I mean, it was spotless for Quintana, four hits allowed, one walk, eight strikeouts. And you want to know the value of a catcher, look at Jose Quintana's numbers this year. So five starts with the Omar Nravayas, he had a four, six, one ERA in 27 and a third innings pitch. Surprisingly enough, that was the best mark that he had with any of the other catchers than that's have, with Tomás Nido, three starts with him, seven, four, seven ERA with Luis Terens, two starts with him, seven, oh, four ERA with Francisco Alvarez, five starts, a two point two, five ERA and his last two starts have been great. His best set of back to back starts all year. No coincidence that Alvarez has been been behind the dish for both of them really gives Quintana a lot of confidence, really emphasizes, throwing low in the zone, making sure he doesn't leave pitches up or he can get hurt and moving forward, you're going to see that Jose Quintana will not throw to another catcher this year other than Francisco Alvarez barring injury. I mean, that's just cut and dry at this point. I think Sean Maniah might be the same thing. They're going to have to be really selective with when they get Terens back there because some of these guys just love Alvarez so much. Luis Severino is a guy that will be pitching to Terens I think because they like keeping Alvarez out of the game with the heavy sinker usage of Sevi and with Alvarez dealing with that thumb still, which is not an issue that is going to really hurt him and keep him out of the line. He's been playing great with it, but it's just something to monitor. You don't want to make a really struggle catching so many pitches down in the zone and Terens worked great with Severino the last time out. Severino will be pitching on Sunday, so a little change in the schedule there as the Mets may be looked to avoid having him face his former team. The nose is better than anyone in the Yankees that David Peterson will start in that series against the Knicks. When it comes to the relievers, Adam Antavino got five outs, Drew Smith got three very interesting when those guys are pitching in the, you know, mop up duty, the block games, they're pitching in the low lever situations, which to me still indicates that Danielle Nunez, Reed Garrett, these are the guys that are setting up Edwin Diaz right now at the back end of the Mets bullpen, Sean Reed Foley, of course, I should mention as well. There was no injury designation for Sean Reed Foley prior to the game today. So there was a little bit of concern the last time he went out. Nothing came of it. So that is some good news, but we want to talk here about the Mets offense. Are they the best in the national league? If not major league baseball right now, I get to that in just a minute. So if you look at what the Mets have done offensively this month, it has been complete shift in what we saw throughout the earlier parts of this season. All of a sudden this lineup is clicking and it all started with that players only meeting. The second game after that meeting against the Diamondbacks to close out the month of May. The New York Mets scored double digits and runs for the second time all year. Since then, they have done it four times this month where they have scored at least 10 in a game. They've also scored six or more, nine times in 17 tries. More than half the games the Mets have played this month, they have put up at least six runs. They are averaging more runs than any team in Major League Baseball in the month of June at 6.35 runs per game. They also finally have their run differential on the season in the positives by having a plus 10 day-to-day beating up on the Cubs that really did change things for them. And all these games have, all these blowouts have taken them from a team that's been the minus 35, minus 40 at certain points this season, all the way up to a positive run differential team. You look at the slash line of the Mets have had this month. They're hitting as a team, 288, 357 on base, 489 slug. That's what the Braves did last year, essentially. That is Braves level of offensive numbers. I'm not sure. I think the Braves might have slugged over 500 as a team, something crazy last year. But that's the type of offense the Mets have been this month. They've been akin to the 2023 Braves that are the best team in baseball. You look at where those marks stack up around the game. Their average of 288 is second behind only the Diamondbacks. Their on base percentage of 357 is the fourth best mark in Major League Baseball. Their slug of percentage of 489 is second to only the Orioles. If you look at the OPS, they are entirely the Orioles for the best mark in the game at 846. How do the Mets get to those numbers? Look at their lineup. It starts with those top four. Peter Lonzo finally having a great month. He's hitting 275, 375 on base, 536 slug, has a 911 OPS, 4 home runs, 6 doubles, and 15 RBI's. JD Martinez hitting 297, 408 on base, 578 slug, 4 home runs, 2 doubles, 17 runs driven in a 986 OPS. I want to put that into context. Peter Lonzo and JD Martinez have combined for 32 RBI's in 17 games. If you're getting nearly 2 RBI's a game from those two guys in the middle of the lineup, you're going to win a lot of games. It's that simple. So to see them really drive in and runs at the three and four spot, the Mets have found the lineup that works for them and it's just carrying over game, over game series, over series. So let's go Landor, but a huge part of that as well. He's sitting 294 this month, 364 on base, 529 slug, three home runs, 7 doubles. Landor has 20 doubles on the season. He's one of only 11 players in Major League Baseball that have already reached the 20 double mark. Peter Lonzo sitting at 19 doubles on the season. Landor also during this time, he has an 893 OPS and he has 4 for 4 in stolen base attempts. Just playing great baseball around. He made another sensational play today up the middle, spinning, jumping, one hop third of first. I mean, he is in his bag defensively and it's so much fun to watch. He's playing himself into the all star starter conversation for sure if Mookie Betts wins. We talked about that on yesterday's show. So if you're curious, go back, watch that one, listen to that one. But also, I'm not going to say he's going to win it, but is Francisco Landor going to be a top 10 MVP finisher this year? He's playing like it. If he ends up taking this team from where they were at and helps drag them all the way into the playoffs, he might get top five MVP votes. I mean, he is, I don't think he'll win because Shoya Otani is on another level of Bryce Harper. These guys are going to put up offensive season that Landor just can't keep up with. But all around value to a club, few guys are better than Landor. And then yeah, Brendan Imo, who this month's in 333, 389 on base 561 slug, three home runs, four doubles, one triple, 13 RBI, 16 run scored, a 950 OPS. So if those four guys are all clicking, you're going to have one of the best offenses in the National League. You look at the other teams that have been really good offensively this year, fillers in the Dodgers. What does it start with? Great star power atop your lineup. I'm not going to say that Landor to Nemo, to JD Martinez, to Alonso is as good as what Mookie Bette, Shoya Otani and Freddie Freeman is. This is not not quite there, of course, but can that four compete with any team in baseball and put up runs? Absolutely. Now beyond those guys, you have stronger Marta 8 and 311 this month, 367 on base 467 slug. He's got an 834 OPS. You have both the Reese Torens and Francisco Alvarez hitting 333. You have Mark Vientos, who's been struggling a little bit, yet his struggles have been a 767 OPS, three home runs and two doubles on the month. That's not bad numbers. And then you have Jose Iglesias hitting 464 with the 516 on base of 536 slug. I mean, at some point, he's got to be your starting second baseman. He's got to be because Jeff McNeil is the one guy who struggled in this lineup. And I mean, Bader to a certain extent, Bader's got a subset of 100 OPS on the month, but it's in the high 600s. Jeff McNeil's OPS is 447. He is playing himself out of the lineup. Iglesias is playing himself into the lineup. I do want to make one note, though, triple-eyed this year, Iglesias had heavy splits against the left-handed pitching, 994 OPS against right-handed pitching, 678 OPS. I would not count Jose Iglesias to carry this over when he faces righties. If he was to be the everyday second baseman, I think his numbers would take a real dip. He is killing it against lefties. He should be there every single game for the rest of the season at second base against left-handed pitching. But you might need to find a better left-handed compliment for him. It could be McNeil. If you can pull himself out of this, or maybe it's somebody else down the line, and we'll talk about one of the options again, had another nice game that's Brett Beatty, but I really just want to look at all the hitters in the Mets' farm system right now. We're going to do a breakdown of our Friday farm court that we typically do on Fridays. We're going to cover the hitters today, pitchers tomorrow, so let's talk about the bats in just a minute. All right, let's get into our Friday farm port one day removed here on a Saturday. I'm going to go through all the different levels in the Mets system and talk about the position players. And we'll open things up with Luke Ritter, where the last 15 days has four home runs, 12 RBIs in 12 games on this season, 16 home runs and 53 RBIs in 65 games. Ritter, seventh round draft pick back in 2019, I've said it many times, he is not really considered a top prospect, but here he is putting up huge numbers. It is a very easy league to hit in, so to speak, guys get rewarded a lot playing in the international league. So you have to take his numbers with a grain of salt. But at some point, if Jeff, make me look continuous to struggle, this is another guy that could be called on to start at second base. He said the same thing about Ryland Bannon, who's got an 867 OPS over his last 13 games, but it's been very good throughout this season. And then you got Brett Beatty, who's hitting 385, he had another RBI in the game tonight, was starting at third base, he's got 432 on base, 719 slug, so far in Syracuse, he's been very good, still a question about how much is he going to play second base to potentially be a guy that could be the answer instead of Jeff McNeil. But there's just a ton of different players that the Mets have in Syracuse, if they wanted to get a compliment to Iglesias, when it comes to a lefty, it's pretty much Beatty. But a lot of these guys have splits where you could say, all right, call them up and have them face the right-handed side of the platoon with Iglesias. Another guy that I mentioned is Pablo Reyes, who the Mets sort of claimed, or I think they signed him on a minor league deal recently, five games in Syracuse, he's got a 462 batting average. They just are finding a ton of production in that infield. Now, what we said on a kuna is one guy that, of course, all eyes are on in AAA, he's hitting 362 over his last 11 games, played 423 on base, 511 slug, say 934 OPS, has a home run, a triple, a double and six stolen bases on eight attempts. If you look at the season as a whole though, he's sitting 261, 318 on base, 367 slug. OPS sub-700 and a league that really does favor hitters, not the best. So while I still think there's a chance we see a kuna this year, and he could be your answer at second because he would at least give you a late defense and a lot of speed on the bases, I think he's best where he's at right now, still developing. One more guy and triple I to discuss, Ryland Thomas starting to figure it out, guy that started the year in AA, got a promotion, he's now hitting 286, excuse me, over the last 10 games, he's hitting 286. So 342 on base, 743 slug, a 1.085 OPS, which is great. So far now, across his entire time in AAA, he's got a 779 OPS, which is right in line with what he did in Binghamton this year with the 783 OPS, and about the same sample size. I think he's probably a fourth outfit by the time he reaches the big leagues, and you of course have to question the league, he's in as far as the offense, but this is a guy that's pretty much hit everywhere since the best draft in him, so definitely a name to watch. He's again, not really considered some uber prospect, but could he be a big leaguer for some time? Potentially, you got to really credit the way he is skyrocketed through the system. Double A, Ryan Clifford is the guy to watch over the last 15 days, 12 games played for Clifford, 211 average, 415 on base, 553 slug, 300 runs four doubles during that span, a 968 OPS, awesome to see Clifford really clicking down there. I don't know if we've seen him in AAA this year, there's so many guys on that roster that it's just tough to get playing time. I think he's right where he should be. A full season in double A is the perfect place to continue to challenge him, and I think by years then he could have some pretty gaudy numbers where you might be looking to Ryan Clifford and saying, "Oh, now he's the top position player prospect in this system." I could see him leapfrogging Acuna Gilbert in Williams by virtue of Gilbert in Williams. Not really playing much of the, hopefully, Gilbert is going to come back soon here, but we're not going to see much of Jett, and if Ryan Clifford puts it all together throughout this season, there's going to be some that look at him as the best position player prospect the Mets have. Nolan McLean's down there as well, two-way player, pitcher, hitter. As a hitter, he's struggling the way I thought he would at that level. He's two for his last 29, but both of those hits are home runs. So Feaster Famine from McLean, he's doing well, Drake, you're not doing well, he's doing well. He's doing well at driving the baseball out of the yard. Drake Osborn is doing well. He's a catcher, had good numbers in high A, up in double A, hasn't eaten 95 OPS in his last 11 games played, has better numbers right now than Kevin Perad, who has struggled overall in the season to a 6-48 OPS. He did miss some time recently due to an injury, but he's back on the field playing over there, in Binghamton. Alex Ramirez also, to note on him, he has really struggled. Other guys that are fringe prospects at best, Jalen Palmer, resurgence, some of you might know Jalen Palmer was once a guy that I was very high on, but disastrous last couple of years has really dropped them off the radar entirely, but hey, good for him for having some good success lately and Jeremiah Jackson finally started swinging a little bit, but guys that really don't want to ride home about too much here. High A, Nick Morabito finally hit some struggles here lately, 222 average this week, 291 on the season in high A, so that average has finally dipped below 300, got the hit well above 300 in low A, now in high A, trying to have the same level success. He did early, but now maybe starting to have a little bit of an adjustment period, we'll see if he can snap out of it next week. Nick LaRusso, he's maybe take notice, he's sitting 320 over his last six games, he has an 848 OPS on the season, he's starting to drive the baseball to the yard as well, looking like one of the better third base prospects that Matt's having the system right now, so he's been a real surprise as of late. You go to Port St. Lucie for your low A, St. Lucie Mets, not a lot of success over the past week, Boston Barrow, AJ Ewing, Colin Hough, Ron Hernandez, all of these guys are struggling, sub 700 OPS for some of them, sub 500 OPS, but there's one guy who is just destroying pitching in St. Lucie Mets, Jesus Baez, has two home runs this week, two doubles in 292, 357, 625 this past week, he has 10 home runs now on the season in 63 low A games with 14 doubles and a triple. One of these guys that is all of a sudden looking like one of the better power hitters in the system, that's why the Mets loved him when he was their player of the year, what was that 2022, I believe in the Dominican Summer League, I think he hit like seven home runs, which it's rare to leave the yard that much, had a rough year in his first season stage side last year, but now starting to figure it out. That's a lot of home runs for single leg 10 home runs, that's saying something. So Baez really is one of the guys to watch and he might find himself up in Brooklyn pretty soon here. Jeremy Rodriguez in the Florida Complex League is struggling, one of the Mets top prospects, the guy they got in the Tommy fan trade, a rough week or so for him. So we'll see if you can pick it up. Meanwhile, Simone Wan is killing it three home runs this week, he's nine for 20 with a 450 average. This is an 18 year old who was signed, a camera, I think it was not this most recent class, but the one prior to that is when we saw Simone Wan get signed, a guy who got a pretty big bonus and he's an outfielder. So Simone Wan should be a name to watch throughout this season. Might play himself off the complex as well. Last year he had two home runs in 40 games at the complex, so yes, he was definitely with the team last year, seven home runs in just 31 games this season. So good run of success for him when it comes to the power stroke. On tomorrow's show, I will be breaking down everything on the pitching side with the Mets minor leaguers. And of course, we will talk about the second game of this series, Mets vs Cubs. Tyler McGill, first Jameson Tyone, you got a, was it two 10 starts today, I believe two 10 or two 20 afternoon game.
