Welcome to the One Life podcast with Becca White. I am your host and this is episode 28 helping things go right. The morning routine. So it's almost time for back to school. I hope you had an amazing summer filled with all your favorite people and adventures and experiences. Are you like me? I love the carefree summers and the beautiful chaos of having all my kids at home. And inevitably I am also so grateful when the kids go back to school. I am ready for the structure and order and learning. Sometimes the transition is painful, especially the part of getting out of bed early and getting out the door to school on time. We really like our sleep at our house. As we make this transition, there are some things that we can do to help things go right. I have found for me the most important practice of helping things go right for my family is making sure that I am helping things go right with myself as the mom by using a daily morning routine. If I am prepared for my day and available for my family, I am able to reinforce habits and practices that connect us as a family and prepare all of us for the day. When I miss, when I get up late, the morning is rushed and stressful and I just don't love that. So let's talk about routines for a second. So we realize that or not, we all have a morning routine. For some of us, it is intentional and well thought out and supports us to begin our day as the best version of ourselves. For others of us, our morning is held hostage by other people and their needs as we are in reaction mode, which may be the worst version of ourselves. Most of us fall somewhere in between these two extremes. So let's talk about creating a morning routine that serves. What are the things that you need to start your day as the best version of yourself? I'm going to throw out a few ideas and stick with me because I am not suggesting that you create an hour long morning routine. Ain't nobody got time for that. I am talking about a 5 to 15 minute daily routine that you can do 5 minutes when you have 5 minutes and you can extend it to 15 minutes when you have 15 minutes. That's it. So here are a few things that some people like to use in creating their morning routine. Meditation, prayer, scripture reading, making the bed, brushing teeth, using mantras, breath work, showers, hot or cold to wake up the body and the mind, breakfast and drinking water. And there are a lot of other ideas as well and some of these ideas. I love how people get so creative. I have a friend who while she's brushing her teeth, she will stand on one foot as she's brushing the top and the other foot as she's brushing the bottom to preserve her sense of balance. I love that. And also mantras can be done while brushing teeth or mantras can be done during breath work. I know that for yoga, three cat cows counts as yoga for the day. So there are a lot of different ways to implement these different ideas and everybody's routine will be different because again, it's about how you prepare yourself to show up as the very best that you can in your day. So this morning, when Rob and I got our kids up, we talked about the morning routine and we invited our kids to prepare morning routine for their school day, which starts next week. We've only got two kids at home now, ages 15 and 12. It's a whole lot quieter around here now than when we had all six at home still. But it was so fun to hear what our girls feel is important for them to do to show up to life the best version of themselves. And after we went through those, we then established what and when our family practices will be and where they will fit in. So the invitation today is this. Consider your morning and what you need to show up each day as the best version of yourself. Choose one thing to add to your intentional morning routine and do it for a week. Not seven things, just one thing. Remember, one thing affects all things and small and simple behaviors are far more effective than large and grand ideas. So start small. Having a morning routine has absolutely changed my life in all the best ways. We will spend a few days talking about the morning routine and a few additional principles that will help with creating your best routine. So we'll see you tomorrow. We only get one life. Let's make it our best. [BLANK_AUDIO]
