Chicago. This is your morning routine. Listen to respect my name. Cap and G hood. That's right. That's right. We're bad. Watch the show on Twitch. Follow ESPN 1000 Chicago. Stream the show on the ESPN Chicago app. And on in there. 100.3 HD2. And on ESPN 1000 Chicago. No, no, no, no. David Kaplan and Jonathan Hood. Good morning, everyone. Bring 'em out, bring 'em out. Bring 'em out, bring 'em out. Bring 'em out, bring 'em out. Bring 'em out, bring 'em out. Bring 'em out, bring 'em out. Bring 'em out, bring 'em out. Oh, God. Welcome in to the Cap and Jake Good Morning Show. On ESPN 1000 and we are streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. With David Kaplan and Jonathan Hood with you. We've got Shay, we've got Jay Moore, we've got you. 4-3-R ride here on the Spares Friday. What open full eyes for you? 3-1-2. 3-3-2 ESPN, 3-3-2-3-7-7-6. Is our telephone number in cap? We're getting ready for preseason game number two. As the Bears take on the Bills, full coverage starts at 8 a.m. tomorrow, right here on ESPN 1000. Bring it on. The Caitlin Williams era begins. I'll be in a preseason game, but good to see that he's going to start. He's going to duck under center. Four of his five offensive linemen will be there. No Nate Davis and he, Matt Iberflu, said, had a setback. It's believed to be a groin injury. He said we got to restart the whole process all over again. So we'll see what ends up happening with him to see him end up on an IR. I don't know how serious it is, but he's weak to weak now. That's not good, but that's why you traded a fifth round pick for a Polish player and Ryan Bates, which I would think that now means Coleman Shelton would be at center. Ryan Bates would be at right guard. Tevinette left guard. Braxton Jones at left tackle and Darnell right at right tackle. So I'm expecting you see probably close to a quarter. And let's hope that it looks good. Whether you get touchdowns or not, what I want to see is a clean operation. I want to see no pre snap penalties. I want to see them look like a competent offense. And we'll take it from there. Cap, you asked the question to Ryan Polls the other day at Hell's Hall about whether or not there's any concerns about working with a banged up offensive line. I've learned early in just front office work that, you know, having guys pop in and out, it's not the worst thing sometimes just because you get to work the different combinations because during the season, you're going to have those things pop up and guys are going to have to be ready to come in. So you can really get to see what your depth looks like. But obviously, you would love the front five to be there all the time to continue to build that chemistry. But we've been able to work some different combinations through that, which again should help us as we go through the season. Is that a concern then for Saturday or Caleb's going to be out there and he's going to have to adjust? Yeah, there's probably going to have to be some adjustments. But I think there's a strong chance that we've got a pretty healthy alignment when we get to this weekend. Right. So there you have it, Cap. So there it is, Caleb Williams. Again, not the fully intact offensive line. But as he takes a look at under center, he's going to look up and he's going to see Buffalo Bills fans flying from the stands, diving on the tables with Lutador masks on. Oh, God, this environment in Orchard Park. OK, it might be loud. Who knows? It's crazy Buffalo Bills fans, but he's got to get used to it. You got to get out there. Yeah, I don't think they'll be in full throat simply because it is a preseason game. But it's still going to be cool like just like I can't wait. I said to my wife, she's like, what are we doing Saturday? And I said, I'm locked in on football. What? Hun. Caleb's starting. She's like, oh, I'd like to see that. So we're going to be locked in ready to go. And there he is. Number 18 jogs out on the field. And hopefully it goes really well. The big question I think that we all have is how much of the first team offense will we see with Caleb Williams as the quarterback? And I will say, Cap, that it's not just about Saturday. It's about against the Bengals on the 17th and against the Chiefs on the 22nd, if he does play. I just want him to have enough snaps to be able to understand the ebb and flow of the game, the rhythm of the game. Again, it's just preseason. It's kind of glorified practice. The point is, though, for Caleb Williams, it's paramount. Same thing for a Dunes A and the other young rookies that are on this team. I just want to see that it looks like we're progressing. We were at practice the other day. I watched Caleb as you did go through his progressions and make a really sweet throw to DJ. The chemistry is undeniable, him with his guys out there. Now they've got to go out in a fairly hostile environment against a real quality team. I mean, Buffalo believes they're a contender. So it should be cool. And they're going to play Josh Allen and their guys for at least a quarter. Just so you know, for our listening audience, Cap is ready for the Bears game tomorrow because he's got his green Bears cap on. Really cool, really cool green Bears cap. He's got the Bears logo on it. He's got the five stars across there. Very unique cap, but you're ready to go. Like it could be like a military day. Yeah, this is one of those salute service hats. It's really cool. Got it from my guy Dino at Dino Sports Fanshop in the Glen. He had a great selection. I'm like, I want that one right there. That's really unique, but really cool. Thanks. I enjoy that. Thanks. I love summer, you know that. I love when it's 90 degrees and hot and sunny and the sky is clear, sky blue. But I'm also excited because of where I think the Bears are going. Two years ago, when we predicted them five trending lower. Yeah, cool football be back. We have fun with it, but we're going to be horrible. This year, I feel like they're on a really good path. They're not there yet. They're not the Chiefs. I get it, but they're on a really, really good path. Would you like to see a quarter of the Bears First Team offense? Is that too much? It may not be enough, but if they go out, let's just assume they win the kick, win the toss, and they decide to take the football. And they get the ball first in 10 at the Chicago 25. And Caleb takes them down the field, and they get a touchdown. If that operation looks super clean, I might go, all right, you're done. That's all I needed to see. We're good. Uh-oh. And then that's it. [LAUGHTER] We're not even warm, you J-war. It just-- What have you said to me? Uh-oh. Oh, boy. Here we go. Fall start 76 offense, five-yard penalty. Replay first down. Drop pass. Sack. Oh, what? Hunt. Um, you get back out there. I need another series out here. Yeah, I'm right. So-- Damn right. We'll evaluate on the fly. Get it right. Right. Correct. I'll be like Russell Wilson in Denver. He plays a couple of series, puts his helmet away, puts a cap on. Champagne's like, what do you get your cap on for? Oh, no, I need to see more. More? Yeah, it wasn't a good operation. Get back out there. Here we go. Right. Here's the play. I love that. More. I love that. It was something, man. Russell Wilson thought he was in a lawn chair in preseason. I know that you've got skins on the wall, but not in this offense. More out there again. I love it again. Does Andy Reid play his guys? Yes, he does. Yes, there's a reason that they're the best. Tom Brady, when he was playing, said, I need to be hit several times to know I'm back playing football. My body needs to feel that. Let's go. I prefer that as motivating music, J Moore, with that hard knocks, then John Legend. That didn't sit. That didn't sit real well with me. I know you're ordinary people. You saw that cap just like, oh, boy. I know, like, take it slow, take it slow. But the thing is, like, we're ready to see it. Let's go. I know, take it slow is one theory, but we want to see it. Get in the end zone, your first trip in there. Let's go. Did you hear Rome take a shot at Caleb in the hard knocks trailer? It's hilarious. Look at him. It looks like a grandma. It's a bad combo. Just ugly. I'm athletic. Would no haircut? No fade? Two. You can't build a worse combo. You can't build a worse combo. Build it up. That's the default NCAA player, bro. And then he-- first overall pick. Yeah. First overall, man. That guy. The world's just not fair, bro. Not fair. Default NCAA player. That was hilarious. He goes, got no haircut, unathletic. That's the first overall pick. That's it? That was so good. It's just busted on him. So listen, I like what you had there, Jay Moore, because, if not, we don't want this for his first time out. [MUSIC PLAYING] [CHEERING] [MUSIC PLAYING] [CHEERING] [MUSIC PLAYING] [MUSIC PLAYING] [MUSIC PLAYING] [CHEERING] [MUSIC PLAYING] [CHUCKLES] [MUSIC PLAYING] [CHUCKLES] [MUSIC PLAYING] So bad. Don't paper at him. [CHUCKLES] [MUSIC PLAYING] [CHUCKLES] It's karaoke that the words are on the screen. [CHUCKLES] It's so bad. So we want him to be in tune on Saturday, that's the whole point. I talked to Tyson Beijing yesterday. And he said, great scene when you're going into convulsions when he goes, my name's Caleb Williams. I'm Southern California. My signing mode is 25.5 million. Caleb goes into-- I mean, Tyson Beijing goes into convulsions. I go, what was that all about? He says, buddy. Dude, think about this. He said, that dude for a signing mode has got 25 and 1/2 million. I got 25 grand and they took Texas out of most. [CHUCKLES] So wait, it works, right? Number one pick. It's all the just desserts. Yeah, so from my standpoint, Cap, looking forward to this game, Buffalo's a 0.5 favorite. What do you think, both 1 and 1/2 total, 38 and 1/2? What do you think? Take the points. Take the points? You were right last time. The Houston game, you nailed it. I said, go over. Yeah. I got to do a little more research here today. Find out, Buffalo's injuries, but leaning or taking the points. The majority of the first quarter for me, for Caleb Williams and this offense. And if that means a couple of three and outs or whatever you can get to get it down to a field goal or touchdown, I'd like to see that. Yeah, and the other thing is, if Buffalo gets the opening possession and they grind out like a nine-minute drive, yeah, Caleb, you're playing into the second quarter, dude. Oh, boy. Yeah. Hopefully that doesn't happen. Yeah. Let's hope that doesn't happen. Remember, there's two other preseason games after Saturday. So I'd just like for him to get his beak wet a little bit. Right. And if that means the first quarter or the majority of the first quarter, I'm totally fine with that. He doesn't need to be able to go completely baptize into the NFL for too long in the first preseason game. But I'd like to see him out there for sure. I'm not going to go as far as Troy Echman or so many of these other veterans that thought that guy should have played a quarter or two quarters in the Houston game. I won't go that far. Correct. But I still think that he's going to have to have some time. That way he gets a rhythm. If the game is about Brett Ripon again, let it be about Brett Ripon. But for Caleb Williams, it'll be good to see him out there. Completely, Graham, really excited. Just think about the weekend. The weather's going to be-- looks really good. You're going to have Cubs and White Sox tonight from guaranteed rate. And you're going to have the Bears and the Bills. Dude, let's go. Good weekend. Yes. That's for sure. All right. Shay, let's open the phone lines here to Bears fans. 312-332-ESPN-332-3776 is our telephone number. How much will Caleb Williams play? Let's get your thoughts on that. Again, Caleb Williams and the first team offense, it's more than this Caleb. It's just the whole operation. So we're asking how much will Caleb Williams play in your view? Let's talk about that. I know many of you that called us or sent us messages on Twitter, on X, said that you really would have liked to see him out there against Houston only because of the anticipation. But this is the time. He's going to be out there. Many were flusets of things to say about Caleb as well. You hear from the coach coming up next on the home of the Bears, Captain Jay Hood. Captain Jay Hood, I'm back. Oh, Captain Jay Hood, big fan, man. [MUSIC PLAYING] Watch out, fellas. Oh, Chicago's home for sports. ESPN, Chicago. Captain Jay Hood on ESPN 1,000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. We'll hear from Courtney Cronin, the latest on the Bears, coming up at 735 right here on your home for the Bears. ESPN 1,000 Bears and Bills. Our coverage starts Saturday at 8 AM right here on ESPN 1,000. Mattie replaces the head coach for the Chicago Bears. He was on the Up and Adams podcast talking about Caleb Williams, how he is excited for Caleb Williams to get his first opportunity to start in the preseason. Gonna play the starters. And again, we've got a set range for that. Once we feel good about that, we'll get those guys out of there. We're going to see good flow, good execution. And once we feel good about it, we'll get them out. Are you taking Caleb out after two touchdowns or three? Well, if he gets that, for sure. But we just really want to see him execute, operate the offense, have a good rhythm, no pre-snap penalties. I'm being able to go through the process of this. The live rush, I think that's really important for him to be able to feel that. Buffalo has a good rush group, which gives us a big challenge. And him having the ability to slide and keep his eyes down field. So it's going to be a good day for him. Coach, you said you're juiced. That's a headline right there for Chicago. You're juiced about Caleb's debut. What specifically do you want to see the one thing that you'll say, that's why I'm playing you right now? Right. Yeah, much of the same that we've seen in practice. He's really accurate. He does a really nice job on the move. But I just really want to see him function in an NFL preseason game for the first time. If you go back and watch, and which I did, I've went back and watched all the rookies that have played that are hydrat picks over the last couple years. And they were good. They had some struggles in the beginning. And that's part of the process of having that experience and exposure to the NFL game, to the speeds of it, and then being able to adjust and adapt and then overcome that and then go to the next phase of it. So this is all part of the process. So the thoughts there from Mattie Rifluis. Yeah, listening to him, it sounds like he definitely wants to see him handle the pressure the Buffalo will bring. He wants to test his offensive line to handle the pressure Buffalo will bring. But more than all of it, he wants to watch the operation of Caleb Williams as an NFL quarterback in a hostile situation. Like he knows that Montes sweat coming around the edge in Lake Forest isn't going to drive him into the ground. Right. Saturday? Tomorrow? That's something that could happen. Hopefully not. But he could absolutely get his bell run. Ask what happens with rookies. I just remember when Justin feels this here. It's like, ah, the flow of the game in the NFL is much slower than it is in college. Oh, is it? Well, how did he-- we should have saved that audio. Didn't he say something about speed? I don't think it's any faster than like, really? And then he got sacked and somebody stood over with, is that fast enough for you? Yeah, absolutely. Well, why would you say something like that? Douse's first blush thought about the NFL. Because in college, you got this big iron gate. You got six seconds to throw. That's fine. NFL, it comes on you really quickly, really fast. Really fast. And it happened. It happened to Justin Fields. So I look forward to seeing this. I think that we have to circle back, though, to the Nate Davis story. Because a year ago, talking about Nate Davis, why is he in camp, what's going on, and now here we are again. Listen, Cap, when I hear the Nate Davis story, or what's going on with him, you know what I think? I think if he's out with a team, he'll move on. I love the idea that people have the resume of Ryan polls in particular and say, well, he made this mistake. And this Chase Claypool thing here that, hey, man, you're going to make mistakes. Or there's going to be guys that just don't work out. Whether you want to call mistakes or just guys that work, you're going to try-- I mean, that's the trial and error of being a general manager. Correct. You're not going to be aces at the Bellagio on everything. Well, keep telling everyone. Theo, I've seen you say, what was it? 52% of your moves are going to be good if you're good at it. If Nate Davis isn't working, it just doesn't work out. I mean, but he's got a soft tissue injury, which now is week to week. They think it's a groin. I would not release him yet. If I think he doesn't want to practice, if it's not a real injury, that's a different story. Then I would send a message to my team. Guess what? See that empty locker right there? That belonged to Nate Davis. We released him this morning and move on. And don't care if he goes in place somewhere else and plays well. We are setting a culture. We'll see. But it sounds like he is injured. I am interested in some of the other rookies that we don't talk enough about. I want to see between now and the end of the preseason. Like, what's going on with the emagage, the left tackle? Still rehabbing from the quad injury. Yeah. Like, if he gets on the field, let's see what that looks-- if he gets on the field, what that looks like. Because the draft to me cap is more than Cana Williams thumbs up her thumbs down. Roma Dunezay, same thing. We expect them to be able to have some production. But we talked about Austin Booker. I'm interested in just some of these other guys that were drafted, and not many. Because it wasn't a big draft for them. But I want to see if there were some base hits here, here and there, with some of the other players. I played golf yesterday with Olin Crewts and Big Cat Williams. And they both had watched, especially Olin who watches a ton of tape. He said, look, I haven't seen him in an NFL game yet. You're talking about Karan Amagogy? He said, I will just tell you, in watching tape of him, there are a lot of things I like. Olin is-- Olin played as a-- he was angry as the wrong word. He was a very mean, tough football player. Yeah, ruthless aggression. That's a great way to put it. And that's why I think he should be the next bear to go in the Hall of Fame. He's top 15 centers of all time in the history of the sport. That's Hall of Fame. He said, I put the tape on. He said, again, he played in the Ivy League. That's a huge adjustment from the Ivy League to the NFL. But he said, once that kid's healthy, he said it jumped off the tape to him. A lot of things that Olin looks for in an offensive lineman. He said, do I expect him to be the starting left tackle this year? No. But he said, it's a developmental process. But I like that kid so far. You know, I circled him on the depth chart cap is because you're hoping that he could be something. As we continue to try to find the right five on the offensive line, the hope is that he could develop into something, like Braxton Jones as a fifth round pick. Same thing. Correct. But just remember this. As you look at the offensive line and you go, wow, you got Coleman Shelton from the Rams. He signed for $3 million. Top flight centers make $15. Nate Davis makes $10. Top flight guards make $20. Kevin Jenkins is going to get paid if he could stay healthy. Very good player. Braxton Jones is a fifth round pick. Can he become a top flight left tackle? I'm not sure. Darnell Wright's still a work in progress. So your offensive line is still very much in flux. So the number of them are middle shelf. Coleman Shelton is not top shopping at the top shelf. Ryan Bates. Middle bottom shelf. Middle. Coleman Shelton's at the dollar store. Bargain. Yeah. I think he makes $3 million. Am I right or am I wrong? I think a million, yes. I do recall, Cap. Stop laughing, Jaybor. You know, you remember this as well. Do you remember when the dollar store, when stuff was only a dollar? $3 million. One year deal for $3 million. Yeah, I mean, you shopped at the bargain basement. Hey, you got any centers that are really cheap? Yeah, the dollar tree now. The dollar tree. The dollar tree? He's on the dollar tree. Ryan Bates is a solid player. He's not a star. What's the last time he was at a dollar store? You. Me? Yeah, you. Oh, God. I don't think that's not a place that you go to. I go to Costco. That's kind of a-- That's not the same thing. It's close. I'm not hanging with the pores. Take that. Wow. Dude. Like, is there-- I don't even know where a dollar store is. Oh. I'm-- Well, there are a lot of them in neighborhoods you wouldn't go to, I think. OK, let's just be clear here, Shay. I've been in a lot of neighborhoods that you wouldn't even acknowledge. So what he knows? Those were my regular places I went. I went to-- You won't even engage with fans at Lake Forest, please. Don't even shake your hands. That's not even true. I was shaking some hands. Oh, yeah. I was just going to say, I visited my wife's friend. Her and I went and visited a friend in Tennessee. And her husband's like, oh, we got to go out pick up some beer. So I hop in the car, go with him. Guy pulls into Dollar General. Am I? He's like, where am I? Was the beer cold? I don't believe so. No, it was probably in a refrigerator. But it was one of those that, like, the fridge feels like it's leaking out of the floor. The glass is all fogged up. Shay Stein clutching his pearls, like, oh. Like, you got a liquor store around here with a Dollar General? Like, when I go to Costco, I run in there because I really like the produce in there. They got some good stuff, yeah. I feel like, all right, hun, I'm going to run over to Costco. $350 later, I got a back seat full of stuff that I didn't even know I needed. Yes. Oh, wow, look at that. I'm going to get that. Yes. Why? We didn't need that big, huge bucket of chicken strips that I get. Like, hun, nobody in the house but us. The kids are gone. What do you get in a dollar store? Like, what do they have? I haven't been and wanted forever. This is the same stuff that you would get at a Jewels, except this is discounted. Oh, they sell food in a dollar store? Yeah. Yes. I didn't know that. Like, they don't have a butcher, or they don't have, like, a fresh-cut meat or fresh produce. It's all canned and boxed or frozen. Chochkes, little things like that, so let's discount it. My son and daughter-in-law, they love Aldi. Yeah, Aldi's good. They love Aldi. Do you thumb your nose down, and I'm like, Aldi, are you a whore? Did you bring your wick stamps? I really like Aldi, but that's kind of feel like that when you're walking through there. Oh, that's so bad. They've got, like, the fruit loops that are off-brand. They name some ridiculous thing. It's like it's not a toucan. It's a parakeet. And I sent the jenny to my daughter-in-law. I'm like, am I going to run over to Whole Foods? You want to go? She said, we don't shop at Whole Foods. What do you mean? Those are called fruit rounds. Fruit rounds, exactly right. Fruit ovals, I'm like, what are we doing here? David? And it's the same. We don't ask you for anything. We have one income, Garrett's a stay-at-home dad. We shop at Aldi. We get the best bargains there. I'm like, wow, those are still the rice that do it. Aldi? Aldi's still in business. Oh, that's so bad, yeah. That's so bad. She's like, yeah, in New Troy, Whole Foods, you-- That's not where we shop. Cap, we're hitting the sweet spot of our audience now. Don't do that. You-- I don't have the graphics, you know, and the bars and graphs that tell you who's shopping to wear. But I think that's the sweet spot of our audience. But I go to Jewel? Yeah, I mean, that's fine. I'm a Jewel guy. Yeah, but Aldi, you look down at him, like, hmm, dog food spilled in the aisle. That's not well-kept. When do you go to Jewel? You're at, like, organic bank and Whole Foods guy. When are you going to Jewel? I always hit, like, today, before we get out of here, I will hit Jewel and Whole Foods. Cap, I'm going to give you an assignment. Yes. All right, so you have three options. Yeah. You have Dollar Tree. Yeah. You have Dollar General. Yeah. And you have Family Dollar. Mm-hmm. Try to find one of those three stores and go see what they have in it. And they're all in my neighborhood. All three. Family Dollar, I forgot about it. And Waven proudly. All right, I'm going to look up and see if there's any. I'll put my zip code in and see if I can find anything. And if you're a South Sider like me, all those three places, all used to be old Walgreens. Or Walgreens? No, no, no, like Walgreens and CVSs are closing left and right because it's not like the community needs medicine or anything. It's not like the community needs, like, you know, medication and prescriptions. So we'll just keep putting Dollar Trees and Dollar Generals and all that stuff in there because everyone needs a pen. It doesn't work. Coming up, we'll hear. It's good, buddy. At some of those places, you can actually get access to the drugs outside of the pharmacy. That's so bad, man. But it's true in some places. And it's correct. And I have nothing. And for the record, I have no problem with Aldi. When you guys stop in there, you've got to make a quick stop. Aldi, if there's a crushed can of greens in there, half off, throw it in there. Kind of like the bowl shop for free agency. The crushed can of greens. Just throw it in the cart. Yay. Courtney Cronin with the latest on the Bears next on "Cap and Jhood." Checkmate 1.6, landing of suppression on target. That's why I see him in my shot. Shot. Or no shot with "Cap and Jhood." Or yes, we get 1,000 and ESPN Chicago at. That's why I see him in my shot. Good morning and welcome in. To the "Cap and Jhood" warning show on ESPN 1,000. And streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. Now time for a shot or no shot. Here's Shane Norley. Good morning, boys, on a Bears Friday. Bears, Bills tomorrow. Pre-game starting at 8K, William's starting. It's preseason football. I usually temper my expectation and my excitement for this, because I know what it is. Last night, Patriots play. The Panthers, Drake May gets on the field. Throws three passes. Good night. Good bye. Bailey Zappy time. Like, it's not real football. It's not going to be this incredible moment. It's not what Sundays are going to be starting in September. But shot or no shot. It's pretty exciting. Caleb Williams is going to start for the Bears tomorrow. It's a shot. And so here's what's happened, Shane. Follow me now. This is what's happened. With the NFL, we have become the regional college football fan. The regional college football fan. This season goes and comes. You can play your bowl game, right? But cap, for eight months, nine months, they're talking about every part of that football team. Athens, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee. Doesn't matter. If you are a die-hard college football fan, you know what's on those college football channels? It was too on Series 6M? College football, breaking down the line, breaking down what could be, breaking down. This is what the NFL has turned into. In which we've been talking about it all spring and summer, and now it's here. So it's good to see it. Even though it's preseason, the idea that's on our TV is pretty exciting. Because we're finally here. Yeah. And the weather's supposed to be beautiful. And normally, I'd be like, I'm outside. I'm going to be locked in. I'm being in the sunshine. I kind of watch the game. Caleb, Caleb in our uniform. Not at practice. Not in training kit. Caleb, even though it's preseason, I'm going to watch Caleb in Rome and DJ and Keenan. Yeah, I'm in. Sign me up. You just wake up. The NFL is going to be so big that in April and May, there's going to be spring games at college. No, it's going to be red. It gets blue. Yeah, the Packers already do that ridiculous family night thing with the at Lambeau field. They're going to start playing the green and white game in the middle of spring. It's funny you said that because I asked Tyson Bajant. I said, when did they give you the playbook for Waldron? He got hired in February. I said, did you get the book? No. He said, you have to give your mind a break. You cannot just have 12 months of football. You can't do it. He said, I didn't get to April. April. It's fair. Yeah. He said, and it gave me almost three full months to just clear my head. Work out, take care of my body. Relax, but not install, install, install, install. No. He said, you'll burn out that way. You just went to the Blue and Orange game at Soldier Field in the spring. The Blue and Orange brother. It'll be televised. Sam Rovin will be there. Sam, we're going out of the sidelines. Here's Luke Kadellas. Whoa. All right, Sam. Thank you. Wipes his brow. Wow. Who's doing the game tomorrow? Amine? Adam Amine and Jim Miller. Bring it on. That's your combo. Love Adam Amine. Jim too, but Adam's a buddy. I loved Adam Amine. I think he's awesome. My all-in turn. How about that? How about Sam Rovin? Don't you love Sam? No. He's still with him. Is he still-- Hey, God, man. I'm killing Sam Rovin. I didn't kill him. I asked. Whoa, yes, he's alive. Damn. Voice of the Rangers. He is. New York Rangers, yep. Hey, congrats to our buddy, Judson. Oh, right. Voice of the Bruins. That would be a teammate, right? Sam Rovin. Rangers are on ESPN New York, right? I believe they are. They are. That's a teammate. Don't do that. Kind of. Oh. I might go K. Wow. Here's Shay Norlick. Best booth in baseball. The Bears head coach Matt Eberfloos talked to K Adams yesterday, addressed some of the rumors that they could be using Roma Dunes A as the primary punt returner. Well, he's good at it. Number one. He didn't do it in college. We looked at it. He did it three times in life. Yeah, but he's done it in the past. He's always-- he said, hey, I can return punts. And he talked to us about it during the draft process. And he's really, really good at it. And he's dynamic back there. And we'll see if we're going to get him a couple of touches in the game. We'll see about that in terms of the other guys, too. And he's got speed, and he's got an explosion. And he certainly can-- yards after catch, you see that. And he can break tackles. So we'll see how it goes. All right, a lot of people have an issue with this. You're taking a top receiver on your depth chart. Ostensibly, your wide receiver three. Potentially, your wide receiver two. Kind of depends how it plays out. Top 10 picking the draft. You're putting him back there on punt returns. But shot or no shot. This is a good use of Roma Dunes A. No shot. Don't do this. They did this with Leslie Frazier in the Super Bowl. The best cover corner in the NFL. The best. Number 21. And guess what? Blue is ACL. And they did a surgery like they have today. Career was basically ruined. I wasn't too keen on Gault and McKinnon back there, but there was speed. Remember, the Bears fell behind 10-0 to the-- then Washington Redskins and Soldier Field 85. Willie Gault catches it at the 5. Willie Gault's in the end zone like an 8-second shot. Oh my god. I'm like, he's not that good of a receiver. Let him do it. Dunes A. No shot. Absolutely not. However, Shay, if you listen closely to that sound, Kay Adams is like the rest of us. I like she questioned in the question like, yeah, Vailus Jones, he really didn't do that in college. She's right there on top. Before we give you an answer, pretty good. J. Moore played it the first 10 seconds of that, going back to the conversation that Kay Adams had with-- might be Riflous. Boy, he's good at it. Number one. He didn't do it in college. We looked at after-- he did it three times in life. Yeah, but he's done it in the past. He's always-- he said, hey, I can return points. And he talked to us about it during the draft process. Yeah, as you can see right there, the question right there, questioning him, like he didn't do that in college. Yeah, but we like him back there. OK. But he can do it. Yeah. Interesting. He did, I think, three punt returns at Washington. One of them was an 83-yard touchdown. So obviously, he's good at it if given the opportunity. But he was Washington's most explosive weapon. Of course, he wasn't returning punts. You can't do that. See? He liked him back there, though, because they think speed kills. It does, if it's accurate. It does. Yeah, it kills. I just don't even get blasted up from returns. Oh, I agree with you. I don't want to do an day back there. But didn't Neil Anderson, when he came here, I think Neil played, well, one year with Walter. Didn't Neil return kicks? And he was really good at it. And he covered kicks. I'm pretty sure-- I don't remember. I'm going to look at it. I know that man was a pro bowler. Oh, that guy was a stud. Not saying that Neil Anderson was Walter Payton, but there wasn't a lot left on the-- it wasn't like there was this huge drop off. When Walter retired, Neil was right in there, getting the job done. I recall that. Neil Anderson's 59 years old. Mm-hm. Of course. It was 59. How do you? I mean, oh my god. Neil was good. And next week, he-- it's August 14. Next week. What's today, the ninth? Mm-hm. Next week, he turns 60. That is sick. Your memories of Neil Anderson, 312. Give us your thoughts on good old number 35. Wow. Your thoughts, Neil, what did you think of them? Jeez. He only carried them all 35 times as a rookie. 35. And because? Because Wally was here. That's right. That's right. We'll go let him get the ball. Yeah. kicks and punt returns. 1985, he only returned a few, a handful. He was all over it defensively. Yeah. Maybe that should be if a Clil Herbert. Here's Shane Norley. All right, the white Sox are going to be looking for a new manager this off season after firing Pedro Grafol yesterday. Sox apparent criteria per Chris Getz is going to be someone outside the organization and currently in uniform. Stop me if you've heard that criteria before. The favorite option in media right now seemingly is Skip Schumacher, who is National League Manager of the Year before the wheels came off this year in Miami. Shot or no shot, Skip Schumacher would be the perfect hire for the white Sox. That's a no shot. That's a no shot. First of all, if I'm Skip Schumacher, why would I want this job? You're already in the basement in a underwhelming organization in Miami, Marlins. Why would you want this job? No matter the relationships you have in the front office with those with the white Sox, you're not winning here, Skip. You're not. And also, you're not the right person to be able to foster this young ball club to the next level, whatever that level is. So that's a no shot. Skip Schumacher is not the right-- is not the name. I was thinking of. Yeah, I would say that's a shot. I just don't think he'd take it. Now, if nobody else out there wants them, but you've got to think, how many jobs average would he or open a year? They're saying Atlanta, Brian Stinker, may walk away at 68. Done. I want to enjoy my life. OK, so if he walks away, if Skip Schumacher can get that job, I'm not saying he can, but if he could, he's obviously going to take Atlanta. They get a coup in your back. They get Albie Speck. They had a strider back. That didn't even win the World Series. Like, why would you take this one? Well, I would agree. If Atlanta was open and if Skip Schumacher was available to the Atlanta Braves, the Braves, it was going to happen. It just happens at baseball, man. You've been riding that crest, riding that way for a while. 100-plus win ball club, almost unbeatable. And now you've got injuries. And so-- and now this is where you are. I would say that I would rather take the Atlanta Braves job than the White Sox. This is for a young manager cap. They're not going to go to the organization. But think about all up and down Major League Baseball. What veteran manager would want this job? But how are you going to get fired? Skip Schumacher. Schumacher. He's a young man. Yeah, he's got to be one of my 30s. Is there a name out there for you, Huddians? Is there somebody you're looking at? For me, I'm the White Sox. I had entertained-- it was reported yesterday. Or John Morosi, Chris Federer, the Tigers pitching coach, younger guy, he's done a stellar job with their staff. I would entertain bringing him in as a manager and giving him a shot. [LAUGHS] And by the way, Schumacher looks younger than 44. Looks like he just came off the field. He does. Well, here's the thing. I said yesterday, Shay, and I won't get off of this until I find out more. But I just think that Chris gets put himself in a box yesterday. He did, by saying that my choice is to find someone outside the organization. I think that you have to cast a wide net when you're this bad. This idea that you're limiting yourself and saying, well, here's my specifics. I don't think that the press need to know all that, quite frankly. I don't think everyone had to know that, unless it was something that I found out-- you found out-- cab off the record. But you made it clear that it was someone on a major league baseball roster and no one within the organization. Grady Sizemore actually will be the right pick at this particular time. Where are you going? Seriously, he's already part of the organization. He's with Jesse Barfield, a Barfield guy, a gets guy. So because you're spinning your wheels, why do you have to have someone that you're going to fire in three years, or two years? Yeah, I disagree with you. If I can get the right got-- not Terry Francona. I'm not talking about that. But if there is a skip Schumacher or somebody like that that said, I'll take on that task, like Brandon Heid did with the Orioles. I'm willing to take that gig. But I want a five-year deal, and you're going to pay me solid money. And I'm getting locked in here, and I'm going to do it my way. I'm going to be the guy in charge here. Yeah, I would absolutely do it. Now, if that person doesn't exist, then your Grady Sizemore, or someone like that, can make some sense. But yeah, I would absolutely hire him if I could get him. Somebody like it. Do you understand that the White Sox manager is like the sixth most important thing to the team right now? Honest to God, like the fifth or sixth. I mean, because it starts with ownership, and it starts with the minor league system, and major league system. Before you get to the manager, it's the other things that matter to the organization. So disagree, but Pedro was not well-liked by his team in there. I have got to fix that right there. Because that is like a festering thing. It's got to get fixed. So a guy that is chummy with the players, and still losing-- I didn't say that. I'm not finished. Chummy with the players, and still losing 100 games in a year. You going to do that? Because that's what's going to happen. Well, I'm not saying chummy. I'm the somebody that is respected, that guys will play hard for. Yeah, I got to find that guy. Whoever that is. To fire him in two years. That's what's going to happen. They're not going anywhere, Cap. You know this, but see, I don't know why you're having pushback with me on this. Because there's nobody in that front office. There's nobody on your phone. There's no one in sock circles. I could tell you that, yes, things are looking up. It looks rosy. It's no rosy picture. The whole thing is flat. I don't disagree, but if I hire the right guy with a little bit of street cred, a little cache, he at least can demand that we are going to play a certain way. We're going to play hard. We're going to put this thing in Brandon Hyde, who went to the Orioles. He won 50 some games, two straight years. And they didn't fire him. They said, we're committed to you. And they built it. So yeah, if that guy's out there again, if Skip Shoemaker is as good as everyone thinks he is, he's probably taking another job. I mean, I'm more than Atlanta's going to open. He will not go from one dump to the fire to another. He just won't do it. I don't think you should. Probably not, but if you could get him, and it costs you whatever it costs you, triple what you paid Pedro and he would do it, I'm in. But then what about the-- No, I got to get players. Yeah, yeah. I mean, what about the rest? What about the-- that's really the carpet for the horse in a lot of ways, is it not? I got a lot of pitching there in that system now. I'll give them credit on that. They do have pitching in that system from the cannons and the Thorps and this and that. Now, if Jerry says, I'm cutting payroll, I'm not going to spend anything. Well, then no one's going to take the job, right? You know? All right, we got around the NFL. We got Jesse. We'll talk more with Jesse Rogers about this, who's he's coming up at 835. The little guy, let's do it. All right, Captain J. Hood. Not only are we on ESPN 1,000, but also we're on our YouTube channel. Welcome back. Welcome back to Captain J. Hood. I'm Chicago's home for sports. ESPN, Chicago. It both sucks. He sucks. I'm just a fan. I'm not a football about it. I love the Green Bay Packers. The guy is front, but there he goes. This is not Detroit, man. This is the Super Bowl. I love winter. He starts the comedy moment. This is a really thickly built guy. I mean, what's am I so you looking for all of these things, huh? Oh, my. Now time to go around the NFL, right here on Captain J. Hood, here on ESPN 1,000. With you to 10 o'clock, then Greenie, at 10, Carmen New York, at 12. Wadlin, Sylvia, at 2.30. And if the White Sox actually cubs, it's 6.30. Blackin' up dollar on their YouTube channel and on the ESPN, Chicago app. Around the NFL with Shane Orling. All right, I have a few questions. I need the two of you to help me with some NFL-related questions that I have amidst some of the news coming out of the training camps. Bring it on, Shane. Jerry Jones can't be an idiot, can he? Like, he can't be stupid. Obviously not. He bought a franchise for, what, 190 million or whatever he paid, and it's worth, like, $8 billion. So he can't possibly be stupid. So why on earth did he get in front of the media at 6 o'clock central yesterday and tell everybody gladly, I have no urgency to get a deal done with CD-LAM. I don't know why he said that. But you know what's a win for him, which is unfortunate, is for him and his organization to stay relevant. They love the drama. It's like the TV show Dallas Cap. It really is. It's the drama part of it. I said this weeks ago on the show, Dallas is more of a concept than a football team, a championship football team, a concept. It is a marketing tool. That's what it is. Dallas, America's team, but not really. You go to this famous restaurant cap. All my friends say, well, I gotta go. When we travel here, we gotta go to this restaurant. You get there, it's like, oh, it's a three-star. Only because people are familiar with it. Same thing with the Dallas Cowboys. America's team. It's only because you're familiar with the drama. Not because it's good. Shay, how about that? - Wow, that was well said. - Thank you. - Yeah, I keep trying every day. - Wow, so it's not that he's stupid. It's just that he doesn't have the same goals as other owners. It's not interested in winning a championship. 'Cause if you wanna win a championship, you don't piss off one of the three best receivers in the NFL. - You're 100% right. - Like, what are you doing? - I guess, it's Jerry Jones. It's just, he like, he just does, he just says things. And again, all of this does not get you any close to a championship. Something like that. Why piss off him? CD Lam, why would you do that? Dak Press got still just floating in the wind. - So, but CD, to get the free agency, has to play this season. - Every year we're going through this, though. - Right? - Every year we go through this. J.D. and I spent a summer together on ESPN Radio trying to figure out, is Ezekiel Elliott gonna get paid or not? A whole summer, every single weekend, every Saturday and Sunday. It's like, what are we doing here? Who cares? (laughing) Seriously. Just, he's so weird. - And you just see you in your beautiful home, looking out the window, it's beautiful weather. God, and you like the heat, I'd like to be outside. - Yes. - Yeah, welcome in ESPN Radio here on the network with Jeff Dickerson, rest in peace, J.D. Is Ezekiel Elliott worth $80 million? - We bring in Town Archer on the shelf, the Shell Pinswell performance line. - Yeah. - Let's do that. It's unbelievable. - Even the Zeke thing was also stupid, especially the way he went about handling it. - Yeah. - Because Zeke, for the four weeks of training camp, was on a beach in Cabo, drinking my ties and hanging out. A week before the regular season starts, they make him the highest paid running back in NFL history. What happens? He's terrible. - Like, duh. - I don't understand it either, Shay. I wish we can give you like historical context of this as being with Jerry. I don't know. There was a time that he actually cared about winning championships. Instead, he just cares about the drama. Shay. - A lot of teams are approaching the starting quarterback playing in the preseason conundrum very differently. The Chiefs will play Patrick Mahomes. It doesn't seem like the Lions are very interested in playing Jared Goff at all in the preseason. Aaron Rodgers will not play in the preseason, according to a lot of the reports that we've gotten. The Bears obviously are working with Caleb Williams a little bit. Drake May last night played a series through three passes. Good night. - Who's right? What's the right way to go about this? Josh Allen's gonna play a quarter tomorrow for the Bills. Is that right? Is bubble wrapping him right? How do you go about this? - I believe you play your guys. Andy Reed plays Patrick Mahomes. Tom Brady played for the greatest potential coach in the last 25 years. Bill Belichick, he's top five all time in the league. They played their guys. I believe you play football players play. - Yes. - I'm not saying he should be out there for four quarters, but enough to get his feet wet. - I think that that should always be the case, Shea. We're always so afraid of injury. And it's a physical game that's gonna be injury. You just hope that your players are healthy and healthy enough to play the next week. That's what it all comes down to. I just don't, I never believe in the fear of injury when it comes to these players. I know it's easy for me to say here. I'm just saying though that how do you get a feel of the game if you sit on the sidelines for four weeks and then? Okay, the bell rings, here I go. Unless he's just some grizzled veteran that's there like, hey man, my leg's not good, but man, week one, I'll be ready to go. Just give me some time, I need time, right? But when it comes to, especially young team, young players are healthy, they need the time. So I would say a quarter, I would say across the board. - On the subject of young players that need the time, Bryce Young did not play yesterday for the Panthers against the Patriots. What does he don't, like? - I don't understand that. There's no more case by case with it. If I'm the Lions, I know Jared Goff's good. I know my offensive Lions good. I have continuity. I feel a little comfortable bubble wrapping them. Obviously there's a bit of risk there because you might start to season and have a few timing penalties. Maybe you'll lose a game you shouldn't 'cause you're not as fresh as the teams that did play, but you start healthy and that's more important. I get it. Bryce Young not playing last night. What are you doing? There is no reason not to play Bryce Young. - Is he 100% healthy? - Yeah, I believe so. - I think one of the reasons why he doesn't play is the video that we all saw of him walking through practice looking like a child. Do you recall this cap? - Yeah. - He had his sling bag on, he's walking through. - Somebody put a meme out like, "Oh, first day of high school." - Yeah, it's like, it's just such a little guy going across there. - And my eyes was tricking me, Shay. It just tricked me just a minute ago. I did not watch the Patriots last night and I saw the quarterback for Carolina. I'm like, Jake Plummer's still in the league? Jack Plummer, it was the starter yesterday. Not Jake Plummer. - Yeah, former Louisville quarterback, Jack Plummer. - Jack Plummer, who got sacked five times yesterday. So yeah, I think that it's first quarter play cap. I would agree also, Shay, that when you say case by case, if it's someone who is elite, it's up to them. I also wouldn't do the Aaron Rodgers thing who was saying, "I don't need to play." You need to play. - But that one's even more interesting 'cause I never talked to Salah about that. Great. - Salah did not, good. - Salah did not tell him. He did not tell him that he wasn't gonna play the first two preseason games. He had to find out through back channels. So if the coaching quarterback had on the same page, you would think, how do they not? - Hey, Salah, Aaron, I need to see him in here. - That's all? - Yeah, Coach, what's up? I just wanna let you know, make sure we're on the same page here. I'm not playing the first two preseason games. We'll determine down the road the rest of the way. - Okay, thanks. How do you find out from the Courtney Crohn of New York? - That's what happened. - Hey, Aaron, I have a question. How do you feel about not playing the first two preseason game? Oh, that's news to me. Now you look like a bunch of boobs. - See? That's why the Jets are the Jets, okay. Terrible performance, terrible head coach, back after this. Shay, give us one more, please. - Yeah, last thing I need help with. Why does everybody love Matthew Stafford so much? Is it the good southern boy in Hollywood with his fancy new veneers? It's just attractive. Like Dan Orlovsky, number one quarterback in the NFC, last week, he ranked them. I know what that is. That's a bromance. We played in Detroit together, and we're best buddies. I love him. - How about Caleb? - But that's what shocked me. Yesterday, Caleb Williams. I can't name better quarterbacks than Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford. - You can't? Patrick Mahomes never entered the brain there? - Aaron Rodgers is the top seven quarterback of all time. - Look, Aaron Rodgers, I get it. Caleb's hero growing up. He has mentioned he's his favorite quarterback of all time. I get it. Matthew Stafford. Mahomes is better. Lamar is better. Josh Allen is better. - I'm not sure why you said that. - Are you sure Lamar? - Again, Lamar's one of two MVPs. I am not at all casting aspersions on him as a player. - Matthew Stafford's got pretty freaking amazing number. I'm not saying he's the best. You know what I mean. - I agree. - But he also won a Super Bowl, and that guy's a pretty damn good quarterback. - We're not doing all time rankings here. We're doing, who are the best quarterbacks in the NFL in 2024, right? - Yeah. Is it because the quarterbacks are older? - How old is Matthew Stafford? - 32. - 37, 38. - Keep that old. - Wow. - You can understand why a guy like Caleb Williams. Oh, why Caleb Williams to look at him as a, what, a 21-year-old and say, yeah, that's one of the great. Because of the way he could spin it. Not probably because he's a great baby because of the mechanics. And how long he's been in the league, too. Like the longevity. - And he was the number one overall pick. - Yeah. - And he dealt with some horrible Detroit teams, and then he goes to LA and wins the Super Bowl. - He probably parried together. - Probably. I mean, so I'm not offended by it. What I look at it is that look at the age range, Caleb Williams and Matthew Stafford. One thing about Caleb Williams, I'm sure he's not going through football reference, like we do every day and say, Matthew Stafford versus the greats. He probably just thinks of him and just like, well, that guy can spin it. And that guy's been around for a long time. Looked at the age. It's like Super Bowl champion. And also, he pays when we go drinking. - Correct. - He buys. He bought me out when I was a college student, making nobody. - That could be too. - Except for the 10 million in that ILI. - I'm not offended that everybody's naming him. I just am confused. I'm like, I understand I have a bias against Matthew Stafford a little bit. I'm lower on him than most people. And it is a bias. It's a fan thing. I watch that dude tank Detroit seasons away multiple times. I thought he got too much love. But this is way too much love. - All right. Pretty damn good football player. Hall of Famer. All right, coming up. Jesse Rogers with the latest cups and socks and MLB. - I see what you're doing. I'm not taking the bait. - I'm just here to serve cheese every morning. - Love it. - We're here on the Captain Jacob boarding show.
