[Music] Good morning and welcome in to the Captain J Good Morning show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. Now time for a shot or no shot. Here's Shane Norley. Good morning boys on a Bears Friday. Bears Bills tomorrow, pre-game starting at 8K. Caleb Williams starting. It's preseason football. I usually temper my expectation and my excitement for this because I know what it is. Last night Patriots play the Panthers. Drake May gets on the field, throws three passes, good night, good bye. Bailey's zappy time. It's not real football. It's not going to be this incredible moment. It's not what Sundays are going to be starting in September. But, shot or no shot. It's pretty exciting. Caleb Williams is going to start for the Bears tomorrow. It's a shot. And so here's what's happened, Shane. Follow me now. This is what's happened. With the NFL, we have become the regional college football fan. The regional college football fan, this season goes and comes. You can play your bowl game, right? But cap for 8 months, 9 months, they're talking about every part of that football team. Athens, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee. Doesn't matter. If you are a die-hard college football fan, you know what's on those college football channels it was to on Series 6M? College football, breaking down the line, breaking down what could be, breaking down. This is what the NFL has turned into, in which we've been talking about it all spring and summer and now it's here. So it's good to see it. Even though it's pre-season, the idea that's on our TV is pretty exciting. Because we're finally here. Yeah. And the weather's supposed to be beautiful. And normally I'd be like, "I'm outside. I'm going to be locked in. I'm being in the sunshine." I kind of watched the game. Caleb, Caleb in our uniform. Not at practice. Not in training camp. Caleb, even though it's pre-season, I'm going to watch Caleb in Rome and DJ and Kean. Yeah, I mean, sign me up. You just wake up. The NFL is going to be so big that in April and May, there's going to be spring games at college. No, it's going to be red. It gets blue. Yeah. The Packers already do that ridiculous family night thing with the at Lambo field. They're going to start playing the green and white game in the middle of spring. You know, it's funny you said that because I asked Tyson Beijing. I said, "When did they give you the playbook for Waldron?" He got hired in February. I said, "Did you get the book?" I said, "No." He said, "You have to give your mind a break. You cannot just have 12 months of football. You can't do it." He said, "I didn't get to April." April. It's fair. Yeah. He said and gave me like almost three full months to just clear my head. Work out, take care of my body, relax, but not install, install, install, install. No. He said you'll burn out that way. You just went to the blue and orange game at Soldier Field in the spring. The blue and orange brother. It'll be televised. Sam Rosen will be there. Sam, we're going out of the sidelines. Here's Luke and Ellis. Wow. Alright, Sam. Thank you. Wipes his brow. Wow. Who's doing the game tomorrow? Amine? Adam Amine and Jim Miller. Bring it on. That's your combo. Love Adam Amine. Jim too, but Adam's a buddy. I loved Adam Amine. I think he's awesome. My own intern. How about that? How about Sam Rosen? Don't you love Sam? No. He's still with us. Is he still with us? Sam Killings Sam Rosen. I didn't kill my ass. Yes, he's alive. Voice of the Rangers. He is. New York Rangers, yep. Hey, congrats to our buddy Judson. Oh, right. Voice of the Bruins. That would be a teammate, right? Sam Rosen. Rangers are on ESPN New York, right? I believe they are. They are. Hey, that's a teammate. Don't do that. Kind of. Okay. Why? Here's, here's Shay Norley. Best booth in baseball. The Bears head coach, Matt Iberflus talked to K Adams yesterday, addressed some of the rumors that they could be using Roma Dunes A as the primary punt returner. Well, he's good at it. Number one. He didn't do it in college. We looked at it. He did it three times in life. Yeah, but he's done it in the past. He's always, he said, hey, I can return punts and he talked to us about it during the draft process, but, and he's really, really good at it. And he's dynamic back there. And we'll see if we're going to get him a couple of touches in the game. We'll see about that in terms of the other guys too. And, you know, he's got speed and he's got explosion and he certainly can, you know, yards after catch. You see that and he can break tackles, you know, so we'll see how it goes. All right. A lot of people have an issue with this. You're taking top receiver on your depth chart, ostensibly your wide receiver three, potentially your wide receiver two kind of depends how it plays out. Top 10 pick in the draft. You're putting him back there on punt returns, but shot or no shot. This is a good use of Roma Dunes. No shot. Don't do this. They did this with Leslie Frazier in the super ball, the best cover corner in the NFL. Yeah, the best number 21. And guess what? Blue is ACL and they didn't have surgery like they have today. Career was basically ruined. I wasn't too keen on golf and McKinnon back there, but it was speed. Remember the Bears fell behind 10 nothing to the Washington Redskins. It's older for 85 Willie Galt catches it at the five. Willie Galt's in the end zone, like eight seconds. Oh, my God. I'm like, he's not that good a receiver. Let him do it. Dunes, they know shot. Absolutely not. However, Shay, if you listen closely to that sound. Kay Adams is like the rest of us. I like she questioned in the in the question like yeah, valus Jones. He really didn't do that in college. He's right there on to before he gave an answer. Pretty good. Jay Moore played the first 10 seconds of that. Going back to to the conversation that Kay Adams had with mighty reflux. Well, he's good at it. Number one. He didn't do it in college. We looked at after he did it three times in life. Yeah, but he's he's done it in the past. He's always he said, hey, I can return punch and he talked to us about it during the back process. Yeah, as you can see right there, the question right there questioning him like he didn't do that in college. Yeah, but we like him back there. Okay, but he can do it. Yeah. Interesting. He did. I think three punt returns at Washington. One of them was an 83 yard touchdown. So obviously he's good at it if given the opportunity, but he was Washington's most explosive weapon. Of course, he wasn't returning punts. You can't do that. See? He liked them back there, though, because they because they think speed kills. It does if it's accurate. It does. Yeah, it kills. I just don't need him getting blasted up from returns. Oh, I agree with you. I don't want to do and say back there. But didn't Neil Anderson when he came here? I think Neil played, well, one year with Walter. Didn't Neil return kicks and he was really good at it. And he covered kicks. I don't want to lie. I don't remember. I'm going to look at it. I know that man was a pro bowler. Oh, that guy was a stud. Not saying that Neil Anderson was was Walter Payton, but there wasn't a lot left on the. It wasn't like there was this huge drop off. When Walter retired, Neil was right in there getting the job done. I recall that. Neil Anderson's 59 years old. Of course. 59. How do you? I mean, oh my God. Neil was good. And next week he is August 14 next week. What's today? The ninth? Next week he turned 60. That is sick. Your memories of Neil Anderson. 312. Give us your thoughts. I'll go to number 35. Wow. Your thoughts. Neil. What did you think of them? Oh, my geez. He only carried them all 35 times as a rookie. 35. And because? Because Wally was here. That's right. That's right. Let's go let him get the ball. Yeah. Kicks and punt returns 1985. He only returned a few. A handful. He was all over it defensively. Yeah. Maybe that should be if a Clil Herbert. Here's Shane Norley. All right. The white Sox are going to be looking for a new manager this offseason after firing Pedro Grafol yesterday. Sox apparent criteria per Chris gets is going to be someone outside the organization and currently in uniform. Stop me if you've heard that criteria before. The favorite option in media right now seemingly is Skip Schumacher, who is National League Manager of the Year before the wheels came off this year in Miami. Shot or no shot. Skip Schumacher would be the perfect hire for the white Sox. That's a no shot. That's a no shot. First of all, if I'm Skip Schumacher, why would I want this job? You're already in the basement in a underwhelming organization in Miami Marlins. Why would you want this job? No matter the relationships you have in the front office with those with the white Sox, you're not winning here, Skip. You're not. And also you're not the right person to be able to foster this young ball club to the next level, whatever that level is. So that's a no shot. Skip Schumacher is not the right is not the name I was thinking of. Yeah, I would say that's a shot. I just don't think he'd take it. Now, if nobody else out there wants them, but you got to think how many jobs average would he are open a year? They're saying Atlanta, Brian Stinker, may walk away at 68. Done. I want to enjoy my life. Okay, how many? Okay, so if he walks away, if Skip Schumacher can get that job, I'm not saying he can, but if he could, he's obviously going to take it. Lana. They get a cut in your back. They get Albie's back. They had a strider back. That team can win the World Series. Like, why would you take this one? Well, I would agree. If Atlanta was open and if Skip Schumacher was available to the Atlanta Braves, the Braves, it was going to happen. It just happens at baseball, man. You've been on riding that crest riding that way for a while. 100 plus windball club. Almost unbeatable. And now you've got injuries. And so, and now this is where you are. I would say that I would rather take the Atlanta Braves job than the White Sox. This is for a young manager cap. You're not going to go to the organization. But think about all up and down Major League Baseball. What veteran manager would want this job? You know you're going to get fired. Skip Schumacher. Schumacher. He's a young man. Yeah, he's got to be one of the 30s. Is there a name out there for you, Huddie? Is there somebody you're looking at? For me, if I'm the White Sox, I'd entertain. It was reported yesterday. Chris Federer, the Tigers pitching coach, younger guy. He's done a stellar job with their staff. I would entertain bringing him in as a manager and giving him a shot. And by the way, Schumacher looks younger than 44. Looks like he just came off the field. He does. Well, here's the thing. I said yesterday, Shay, and I won't get off of this until I find out more. But I just think that Chris gets put himself in a box yesterday. He did. By saying that my choice is to find someone outside the organization. I think that you have to cast a wide net when you're this bad. This idea that you're limiting yourself and saying, well, here's my specifics. I don't think that the press need to know all that, quite frankly. I don't think everyone had to know that unless it was something that I found out, or you found out, cab off the record. But you made it clear that it was someone on a major league baseball roster and no one within the organization. Grady Sizemore actually would be the right pick at this particular time. Where are you going? Seriously, he's already part of the organization. He's with Jesse Barfield, a Barfield guy, a Get's guy. So because you're spinning your wheels, why do you have to have someone that you're going to fire in three years? For two years. Yeah, I disagree with you. If I can get the right got, not Terry Francona, I'm not talking about that. But if there is a skip shoemaker or somebody like that that said, I'll take on that task like Brandon Heid did with the Orioles, I'm willing to take that gig. But I want a five year deal and you're going to pay me solid money and I'm getting locked in here and I'm going to do it my way. I'm going to be the guy in charge here. Yeah, I would absolutely do it. Now, if that person doesn't exist then your Grady Sizemore or someone like that can make some sense. But yeah, I would absolutely hire him if I could get him. Somebody like it. Do you understand that the White Sox manager is like the sixth most important thing to the team right now? Honest to God, like fifth or sixth. I mean, because it starts with ownership and it starts with the minor league system and major league system. Before you get to the manager, it's the other things that matter to the organization. Don't disagree, but Pedro was well liked by his team in there. I have got to fix that right there because that is like a festering thing. It's got to get fixed. So a guy that is chummy with the players and still losing that. I'm not finished. Chummy with the players and still losing 100 games in a year. You going to do that? That's what's going to happen. Well, I'm not saying chummy. I need somebody that is respected, that guys will play hard for. Yeah, I got to find that guy, whoever that is. To fire him in two years. That's what's going to happen. They're not going anywhere, Cap. You know this, but see, I don't know why you're, why you're having pushback with me on this because there's nobody in that front office. There's nobody on your phone. There's no one in sock circles. I could tell you that yes, things are looking up. It looks rosy. It's no rosy pitcher. The whole thing is flat. I don't disagree, but if I hire the right guy with a little bit of street cred, a little cache, he at least can demand that we are going to play a certain way. We're going to play hard. We're going to put this thing in, Brandon Hyde, who went to the Orioles. He won 50-some games two straight years, and they didn't fire him. They said we're committed to you, and they built it. So yeah, if that guy's out there again, if Skip Shoemakers is good as everyone thinks he is, he's probably taking another job. I mean, more than Atlanta's going to open. He will not go from one dump to the fire to another. He just won't do it. I don't think you should. Probably not, but if you could get him, and it costs you whatever it costs you, triple what you paid Pedro, and he would do it, I'm in. But then what about the... No, I've got to get players. Yeah, yeah. I mean, what about the rest? What about the... That's really the carpet for the horse in a lot of ways, is it not? You've got a lot of pitching there in that system. No, I'll give them credit on that. They do have pitching in that system, from the cannons and the Thorps and this and that. Now, if Jerry says, "Well, I'm cutting payroll, I'm not going to spend anything." Well, then no one's going to take the job, right? You know? All right, we got around the NFL. We got Jesse. We'll talk more with Jesse Rogers about this. He's coming up at 835. The little guy. Let's do it. All right, Captain J. Hood. Not only are we on ESPN 1000, but also we're on our YouTube channel. Welcome back. Welcome back to Captain J. Hood on Chicago's Armed for Sports. ESPN Chicago. Nick Bolst sucks. He sucks. I'm just a fan. I'm not a football evaluator. I love the Green Bay Packers. The guy is drunk, but there he goes. This is not Detroit, man. This is the Super Bowl. I love women. He starts to comment and call them out. This is a really thickly built guy. I mean, what's that so you're looking for on these things here? Uh-huh. Whoa! Boy! Now time to go around the NFL, right here on Captain J. Hood, here on ESPN 1000. With you till 10 o'clock, then Greenie at 10, Carmen New York, at 12. Waddell and Sylvie at 2.30. And if the White Sox the Cubs at 6.30. Blacken Abdullah on their YouTube channel and on the ESPN Chicago app. Around the NFL with Shane Orling. All right, I have a few questions. I need the two of you to help me with some NFL related questions that I have amid some of the news coming out of training camps. Bring it on, Shane. Jerry Jones can't be an idiot, can he? Like, he can't be stupid. Obviously not, he bought a franchise for what, 190 million or whatever he paid and it's worth like 8 billion. So he can't possibly be stupid. So why on earth did he get in front of the media at 6 o'clock central yesterday and tell everybody gladly, "I have no urgency to get a deal done with CD-LAM." I don't know why he said that. But you know what's a win for him, which is unfortunate, is for him and his organization to stay relevant. They love the drama. It's like the TV show Dallas Cap. It really is. It's the drama part of it. I said this weeks ago on the show, Dallas is more of a concept than a football team, a championship football team, a concept. It is a marketing tool. That's what it is. Dallas, America's team. But not really. You go to this famous restaurant cap, all my friends say, "Well, I gotta go. When we travel here, we gotta go to this restaurant." When you go to this restaurant, you get there, it's like, "Oh, it's a three-star." Only because people are familiar with it. Same thing with the Dallas Cowboys. America's team. It's only because you're familiar with the drama. Not because it's good. Shea. How about that? Wow. That was well said. Thank you. Yeah, I keep trying every day. Wow. So it's not that he's stupid. It's just that he doesn't have the same goals as other owners. It's not interested in winning a championship. Because if you want to win a championship, you don't piss off one of the three best receivers in the NFL. You're 100% right. Like, what are you doing? I guess it's Jerry Jones. He just says things. And again, all of this does not get you any close to a championship. Something like that. Why piss off him? CD Lam. Why would you do that? Dak Press got still just floating in the wind. Yeah, but CD to get the free agency has to play this season. Every year we're going through this, though. Right? Every year we go through this. JD and I spend a summer together on ESPN Radio trying to figure out, is Ezekiel Elliott going to get paid or not? A whole summer every single weekend, every Saturday and Sunday. It's like, "What are we doing here? Who cares?" Seriously. Just he's so weak. I just see you in your beautiful home. Look it out the window. It's beautiful weather. Oh, God. And you like the heat. I'd like to be outside. Yes. Yeah. Welcome in ESPN Radio here on the network with Jeff Dickerson. Rest in peace, JD. Is Ezekiel Elliott worth 80 million? We bring it in. Town archer. On ESPN Dallas. On the shell, the shell pinzel performance line. Yeah. Let's do that. It's unbelievable. Even the Zeke thing was also stupid, especially the way he went about handling it. Yeah. Because Zeke for the four weeks of training camp was on a beach in Cabo, drinking my ties and hanging out. A week before the regular season starts, they make him the highest paid running back in NFL history. What happens? He's terrible. I don't know. Yeah. Like duh. I don't understand it either, Shay. I wish we can give you like historical context of this as being with Jerry. I don't know. There was a time that he actually cared about winning championships and saying he just cares about the drama. Shay. A lot of teams are approaching the starting quarterback playing in the preseason conundrum very differently. The Chiefs will play Patrick Mahomes. It doesn't seem like the Lions are very interested in playing Jared Goff at all in the preseason. Aaron Rodgers will not play in the preseason according to a lot of the reports that we've gotten. The Bears obviously are working with Caleb Williams a little bit. Drake May last night played a series through three passes. Good night. Who's right? What's the right way to go about this? Josh Allen's going to play a quarter tomorrow for the Bills. Is that right? Is bubble wrapping him right? How do you go about this? I believe you play your guys. Andy Reed plays Patrick Mahomes. Tom Brady played for the greatest, you know, potential coach in the last 25 years. Bill Belichick, he's top five all time in the league. They played their guys. I believe you play football players play. Yes. I'm not saying he should be out there for four quarters, but enough to get his feet wet. I think that that should always be the case, Shay. We're always so afraid of injury. It's a physical game. It's going to be injury. You just hope that your players are healthy and healthy enough to play the next week. That's what it all comes down to. I never believe in the fear of injury when it comes to these players. I know it's easy for me to say here. I'm just saying, though, that how do you get a feel of the game if you sit on the sidelines for four weeks? Okay. The bell rings. Here I go. Unless he's just some grizzled veteran that's there like, hey, man, my leg's not good. But man, week one, I'll be ready to go. Just give me some time. I need time. Right? But when it comes to, especially young team, young players are healthy, they need the time. So I would say a quarter. I would say across the board on the subject of young players that need the time, Bryce Young did not play yesterday for the Panthers against the Patriots. What is he done? Like, I don't understand that. I'm more case by case with it. If I'm the Lions, I know Jared Goff's good. I know my offensive Lions good. I have continuity. I feel a little comfortable bubble wrapping them. Obviously, there's a bit of risk there because you might start the season and have a few timing penalties. Maybe you'll lose a game you shouldn't because you're not as fresh as the teams that did play, but you start healthy and that's more important. I get it. Bryce Young not playing last night. What are you doing? There is no reason not to play Bryce Young. Is he 100% healthy? Yeah, I believe so. I think one of the reasons why he doesn't play is the video that we all saw of him walking through practice looking like a child. Do you recall this cap? He's got his sling bag on. He's walking through. Right. Somebody put a meme out like, oh, first day of high school. Yeah. It's like, it's just such a little guy going across there. My eyes was tricking me, Shay. It just tricked me just a minute ago. I did not watch the Patriots last night and I saw the quarterback for Caroline. I'm like, Jake Plummer is still in the league. Jack Plummer. It was the starter yesterday. Not Jake Plummer. Yeah. Former Louisville quarterback, Jack Plummer. Jack Plummer who got sacked five times yesterday. So yeah, I think that it's first quarter play cap. I would agree also, Shay, that when you say case by case, if it's someone who is a elite, it's up to them. I also wouldn't do the Aaron Rodgers thing of saying, I don't need to play. What's in that? Like, you need to play. But that one's even more interesting because I never talked to Salah about that. Great. Salah did not. Good. Salah did not tell him. He did not tell him that he wasn't going to play the first two preseason games. He had to find out through back channels. So if the coaching quarterback had on the same page, you would think, how do they not tell Aaron, I need to see him in here. That's all. Yeah, coach. What's up? I just want to let you know, make sure we're on the same page here. I'm not playing the first two preseason games. We'll determine down the road the rest of the way. Okay. Thanks. How do you find out from the Courtney Crohn of New York? That's what happened. Hey, Aaron. I have a question. How do you feel about not playing the first two preseason game? Oh, that's news to me. Now you look like a bunch of boobs. See? That's why the Janster the Janster. Okay. Terrible performance, terrible head coach, back after this. Shay, give us one more, please. Yeah. Last thing I need help with. Why does everybody love Matthew Stafford so much? Is it the good southern boy in Hollywood with his fancy new veneers? It's just attractive. Like Dan Orlovsky, number one quarterback in the NFC last week, he ranked them. I know what that is. That's a bromance. We played in Detroit together and we're best buddies. I love him. How about Caleb? Luke shocked me yesterday. Caleb Williams. I can't name better quarterbacks than Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford. You can't? Patrick Mahomes never entered the brain there. Aaron Rodgers is the top seven quarterback of all time. Look, Aaron Rodgers, I get it. Caleb's hero growing up. He has mentioned he's his favorite quarterback of all time. I get it. Matthew Stafford. Mahomes is better. Lamar is better. Josh Allen is better. I'm not sure why you said that. You sure Lamar? Again, Lamar's won two MVPs. I am not at all casting aspersions on him as a player. Matthew Stafford's got pretty freaking amazing number. I'm not saying he's the best. You know what I mean. I agree. But he also won a Super Bowl and that guy's a pretty damn good quarterback. We're not doing all time rankings here. We're doing who are the best quarterbacks in the NFL in 2024, right? Yeah. He has a quarterback. So older. How old is Matthew Stafford? 32. 37, 38. Keep that old. Wow. You can understand why a guy like Caleb Williams, why Caleb Williams to look at him as a what? A 21 year old and say, yeah, that's one of the great because of the way he can spin it. That's probably because he's great, maybe because of the mechanics and how long he's been in the league to find the longevity. And he was the number one overall pick. Yeah. And he dealt with some horrible Detroit teams. And then he goes to LA and wins the Super Bowl. He probably parried together. Probably. I mean, so I'm not offended by it. What I look at it is is that look at the age range, Caleb Williams and Matthew Stafford. One thing about Caleb Williams, I'm sure he's not going through football reference like we do every day and say Matthew Stafford versus the greats. He probably just thinks of him and just like, but that guy can spin it and that guy's been around for a long time. Look at the age is like Super Bowl champion and also he pays when we go drinking. Correct. He buys. He took me out when I was a college student making no money. That could be too. Except for the 10 million in an ILI. I'm not offended that everybody's naming him. I just am confused. I'm like, I understand I have a bias against Matthew Stafford a little bit. I'm lower on him than most people and it is a bias. It's a fan thing. Watch that dude tank Detroit seasons away multiple times. I thought he got too much love, but this is way too much love. All right. Yeah. He's a pretty damn good football player. Hall of Famer. All right. Coming up. Jesse Rogers. Don't don't. With the latest Cubs and Sox at MLB. I see what you're doing. I'm not taking the bait. I'm just here to serve cheese every morning. Love it. We're here on the Cafe J who's boarding show. If you missed something, get the podcast on the ESPN Chicago app. Jeff and Jay Hood are back on Chicago's home for sports, ESPN Chicago. Jesse Rogers is brought to you by West Coast Men's Health helping men with ED and chronic pain for over five years. Go to westcoastmenhealth.com and Jesse is on the hotline. That'd be the car ex-tire and I don't have. Rattle, rattle, thunder, batter, boom, boom, boom. Don't worry about the car ex-mate. Good morning, Jesse. How are you? I am good boys. How are we doing? You ready for the Grady Seizemore seven week era coming up here? What do you think? An exact snooze. We finally had some news yesterday. We've been waiting, haven't we? And it finally came down. Where do you want to start? Let's start right there. So I thought that gets kind of boxed himself in by putting the criterion out there, Jesse. Like you didn't have to tell everybody, but he says he wants someone outside the organization. And what I've been telling Cap is that the socks aren't getting better anytime soon as far as NBA and contender. Why wouldn't size more be a candidate? What's wrong with him? I don't know what's wrong with him. That I can't answer you. I think he wants to hear other voices is what he wants. He wants something outside of the bubble. Now I know size was new to the organization, so I guess you could still say that, but he's also very new to coaching. So I can understand why he might not think that's the right guy. Some names that across my desk are also kind of new to coaching, so I'm not sure exactly where to go. And these are not names that necessarily are on Chris Getz's list, but I ask people like who's the up and coming guys? And I got like Daniel Dascals name. He's the bench coach of the Cardinals. He weeks is the associate manager of the Brewers. So look, this net's going to be wide. I can't exactly say why Grady's not on it other than he's very green. I wonder if he did say what he said yesterday, Getz, just to eliminate the Aussie speculation. Just to eliminate the AJ Przinski speculation, like that report was wrong. Someone reported Terry Frank Kona a few weeks ago, that report is wrong, right? Because he's looking for someone in uniform on another in another organization. So maybe just to ramp down the speculation of Aussie and AJ more than anything, he said those things. Do you believe that? And I said this to hoodie hoodie and I disagree here. I got to hire someone who has a little bit of cache because I feel like I've got to fix the broken culture of Pedro Grafalle. I thought he was a horrible in game manager. And I thought everything I've heard. He was not well liked in that room. He just was not. So I got to get somebody that hold players accountable, they're willing to play for like Brandon Hyde did when he went to Baltimore and they said, we're committed to you, man. We know we're going to have two tough years. You just do your deal, help put in the foundation, we'll get you talent then. And now they're winning and they may win a World Series. Who knows? Do you feel like Jerry will allow them to spend some money? If asked to, but I don't think that's what they're going to do, I think they're going to probably hire. I mean, even gets mentioned, Stephen Vaught. I mean, who knew Stephen Vaught? Now he's going to win A.O. manager of the year. Heck, who knew much about Pat Murphy? He's probably going to win N.L. manager of the year. Now he's not a young guy, but he's the first time manager just like Vaught. I think they're going to try to go out and find that next guy that can grow with a young team probably won't cost much and go from there and don't dismiss this part of it too. The manager has to meet the media twice a day. You especially on a rebuilding team are the face and voice of that rebuilding team until some stars emerge and leaders emerge. Grafalle was really bad at that as well, so the next guy has to have that little bit of charisma along with all the other more important skills of managing a team. So I think when Geth does these interviews, he has to take that into consideration of the voice and face of the next guy is really important because it's a rebuilding situation. Jesse, could you help us out with this part of it as well? Because some of the some of the coaches were let go from Pedro Grafalle to his tenure and then we've got some names from the minor league system that's now part of the White Sox. How many of them will stay for the new manager because I just thought that's just interesting. It's a lot of moving parts in August. How many of them will stay in place like Gertchally and some of these other guys? I think very few. I mean, Ethan Katz seems to have like the Tommy Hottaby thing. They can last through different regimes because they've had some success. Let's face it. The White Sox have done well with some of their pitching guys and the infrastructure there. Maybe not everybody, but certainly what they did with Betty and crochet this year, Ethan Katz gets credit, the development of Bill and Sees. So I'm assuming Katz would stay unless he gets a promotion to go somewhere else. I don't know that for sure, but a manager should be able to hire everyone else, basically. Considering Chris gets his new on the job and a lot of these coaches are kind of new, I think that they were here with Grafalle. I think the new manager is going to be able to clean house there as well. They started that process. They got rid of several guys that were Grafalle guys. I was kind of surprised they got rid of Charlie Montoya. I mean, we're talking about Grady size more and coat bench coaches that have never done anything in a leadership position, so Montoya got booted down. He wasn't even a Grafalle guy, so I'm a little surprised by that, Jay Goode. But I think they're going to clean house in the coaching staff other than possibly even Katz and a couple other guys potentially. That's what I was saying, Cap. Like, I don't know if this is going to happen or not. I'm just saying, like, if I'm a manager, if Katz is going to be there, Katz is going to be there. He runs the pitching. But I just need to have my guys there. Like, my bench coach has to be just an old owl next to me that's seen everything. Right? It just can't be Doug Sisson who's there now. Yeah, but what makes you think they'll do business setting different when they promoted Robin to be the manager. He'd never even coached. Oh, we'll get Mark, parent, and three other guys that had never done anything either. Like, where's the Jeff Torborg for Jean Lamont or whoever it was that they had or go get a veteran guy? Well, that's what Charlie Montoya was. I mean, that's what he was. It didn't help though. Maybe he was the wrong guy. I'm talking about for the next manager. Yeah, right? No, I know. But maybe nobody could have helped. But I think if they hire a young manager, you're probably right. They'll find the next veteran Charlie Montoya like a like guy to be there. I'm just surprised. They'll not dare for the final seven weeks, not that it's a big deal, whatever happens as long as you know, you get some young guys and the bats and some innings and stuff. So in any case, the most important hire is that manager and I do think it needs to be a young guy that can grow a former player, a little respect, probably a hitter or whatever, because that's the area they really need to dive into. And they said that yesterday, and I agree with them, they're pitching infrastructures pretty good. Mr. Ethan Katz, but hitting has been a bizmo. I mean, from development to acquisition, it's just been terrible. They need to address that area. Pretty. And I've been talking. We talked yesterday, cubbies still alive five back now, baby. Here we go in the last like 75 days, they have the best bullpen and baseball. Here we go. Are we back in it? I don't, I don't think so. I will say this. They might finish in second place easily. I mean, they're two and a half out of second and the Cardinals don't look great. Certainly the pirates are fading right now. They're probably equal to the Cardinals. I mean, that's going to be maybe neck and neck for second place. But as far as playoff position, I don't think so. I'll tell you why. I think there's just one spot to be had. The Braves might give up that spot. Now there's that opportunity. I think I don't think they're better than Arizona or San Diego. The Braves might give up that spot and I don't think the Mets are great. So there is that opportunity potentially if you can go on a run because I do think Atlanta has come back to the pack. They're not that drug or not. They've been in the past. The Mets are not that good. The Cardinals are not that good. Like I can't say that about Arizona or San Diego that they're not that good. I think they are. But that last spot, I think, is up for grabs. So I'll give them a five or 10% chance but that fake cap because I just don't see it happening. Here we go. All right. The Braves and Sox and everything else MLB with Jesse next on cap and J-hood. Truth of the matter is you're listening to cap and J-hood on ESPN 1000 weekdays 7 to 10 a.m. but it'll last a lifetime. It may only be three hours a day but it'll last you a lifetime. Jesse Rogers with us every Monday and Friday on the cap and J-hood morning show on ESPN 1000. And streaming on the ESPN Chicago app, Jesse, there's only one person that you turn to when it comes to this White Sox situation with size more as the manager. So he won foremost authority to talk about this whole thing. You know what that is, right? Cap. No cap. Absolutely not. I'm angry with Jesse. No, it's not cap at all. It's mad dog. Mad dog Russo. I've been on a radio for 43 years and they've got I think I've won more than six rating books. Go look it up. All right. You got to you got to do better than this. This is a and me number. I know he won six championships with the polls. He can thank Rod Thorne for that because Thorne board got drafted Jordan because Paul been drafted Sam Bowie before that and if it wasn't for Thorne before he owned the team, they never would have won anything because Jordan's the reason it won the six not because it's a very close because of Jordan and Thorne who drafted Jordan. Simple as that. So if you look at it from that standpoint, you can make an argument to last 80 something news. They've got nothing. Come on for Jerry. I'm Jerry. I don't want to hear from Chris. Gets it. 12 30. I'm not interested because you are the owner. You own the team. You have not had a lot of success. I understand you want a championship. Hallelujah. I understand that. 40 something years with six post seasons is not good enough with no playoff series wins in any of the years except the year you want it. How about you stand it up there today and say you know what? This is embarrassing. We can't have a professional baseball team that's not an expansion team in this market when in 28 games. That is all there is going with the 21 game losing streak on top of a 15 game losing stick before that this year. You've got to take responsibility. That's what professional sports is about. That's what I said the other day. I mean, he's right on the money, that guy. How about that? Jesse? Oh, that's my guy. That's my guy. That's pretty good. I mean, that's everything we've been saying for a few years. You're wrapped up in two minutes, right? Jerry doesn't want to hear it, but Jerry needs to come down from the ivory tower and fall on his sword and go, this is not about Chris. It's not about Pedro. This is about me. And I let all of you down and I will fix it. You got to understand the last time he held a press conference, he put his foot in his mouth again. He said that this was going to be a quick fix. I mean, every time he speaks, it goes the other way. So I think he's very reticent to do that, but I agree with you. That's called accountability. That's called accountability. And if they get near the record, set the record, whatever, the owners should be front and center. Will he be? I have my doubts. He did it once last year. We'll see. We didn't do it on the heels of firing the manager. We'll find out tonight, but I highly doubt he's holding a press conference. Absolutely not. And by the way, that's Chris Russo shooting his shot to the producer. I don't want to hear from Chris get to 1230, meaning that they're going to go to the press conference. Right. It didn't happen on high heat on MLB. He canceled it live on his show. We're not going to listen to this. I mean, but it's what everyone in baseball feels to be honest. We've got the only one fans, the other people I mentioned on the air the other day, I literally had a prospective buyer of the White Sox call me and be like, is he going to sell any time soon? I'm like, I don't think so. I don't think so. He's not. Jesse, let me ask you something. Yeah. Okay. You got Cubs and White Sox and the Cubs get the Guardians and they've got a bunch of sub 500 teams. I feel like I told hoodie this yesterday. I feel like it's the scene from Rocky to where she wakes from the coma and come here, win. I feel like they can do this. Look, before the break, I said it's not probable and I'll stick to that, but I don't disagree with you. There's been an awakening, especially at the bottom of that lineup, to be honest, that's where Pete Croes done better. Miguel Amaya's done better. That is going to be the whole key to this thing moving forward because they don't have superstars. They're going to need a full lengthy lineup. They can't just be six good guys. It's going to have to be eight or nine good guys because they don't have two or three great ones. So look, it has awakened a little bit here and you're right. The schedule might open up a door for them. And like I said, I think that third wild card could be up for grabs. I'm not going to say it's impossible. It's ridiculous. It's awful. I've never given up hope. That's a lie. You call them dead. What are you talking about? I've never given up hope. No civil. You did. You did. They're done. Don't be reporting that, Jesse. I've sat at ESPN Chicago. I don't want you to say that on a podcast someplace that the Cubs have hope. It's done. You know it's done. You know what it is. I think it's done. They do need to get the 500 first cap. I mean, they haven't done that in early in April. It's only three under. It's literally Deja Vu all over again. You're going to clean up against the bad team. She got three games on the road against Philadelphia the final week of the season. That's your three against Atlanta last year. You're going to. They only set up their pitch. Good night. They may play right in our hands, Shay. Yeah, just like Atlanta did last year. Let me ask a good question. And that is about Garrett crochet. It's crochet against tie-on today. Cubs and Sox. I think size. We're going to pitch him like eight because he doesn't, you know, he's trying to win, right? No shot. Well, I'd like to know like how many more starts for a crochet between now and the end of the season. Yeah, they have it set it publicly. But I can't imagine he pitches past mid September. So I still think he has a few left because remember, they're just shortening those starts. So it's not a real taxing effort when he takes them on things today again. What's that? Four innings for him again. Yeah. Yeah. I think it's four and 70 at max. Four and 70 at max. Well, I think we'll see that a few more starts and then as we hit September, it'll get shut down soon enough. Let's put it that way. Just remember, Jesse, just mark the date is the only time in major league baseball history in which you had fans of two teams, the A's and the Sox. Arm and arm, beer and beer, all saying sell the team at the same time at the Coliseum. They're correct. Everybody saying sell the team A's fans and Sox fans saying sell the team. That's what happened. Some people at the Coliseum saying that I can't wait for your first situation where your next year, you'll be in Sacramento. Yeah. I can't wait for that. And in three years in Nashville with the white Sox or something, right? Wow. Wow. All right. What are you going to do? Have a great day. I don't like predictions. But in this division, with the core talent that we have, I would hope that I expect the next year will be a lot better than this year. Damn. All right, boy. Have a great weekend. See you guys. Jerry's sticking his beak in there. All right. Jesse Rogers, brought to you by West Coast Men's Health. All right. Coming up, the Bears will take on the Bills. It is pre-season game number two. We talk about it in two minutes on cap and Jhood.
