That's not good But that's why you traded a fifth round pick for a polish player and Ryan Bates, which I would think that now means Coleman Shelton would be at center Ryan Bates would be at right guard Tevin at left guard Braxton Jones at left tackle and darnell right at right tackle. So I'm expecting you see probably close to a quarter and Let's hope that it looks good. I Whether you get touchdowns or not what I want to see is a clean operation I want to see no pre snap penalties. I want to see them look like a company and offense and We'll take it from there. Cap. You asked the question to Ryan polls the other day at Hell's Hall about whether or not There's any concerns about kev working with a banged up offensive line. I've learned early in just front office work that You know having guys pop in and out It's not the worst thing sometimes just because you get to work the different combinations because during the season you're gonna have Those things pop up and guys are gonna have to be ready to come in so you can really get to see what your depth looks like But obviously you would love the front five to be there all the time to continue to build that chemistry But we've been able to work some different combinations through that Which again should help us as we go to this is at a concern then for Saturday or Caleb's gonna be out there and he's gonna have to adjust Yeah, there's probably gonna have to be some adjustments, but I think there's a strong chance that we've got a pretty Healthy alarm when we get to this weekend, right? What? hon Caleb starting he's like oh, I'd like to see that so we're gonna be locked in ready to go and there he is number 18 jogs out on the field and hopefully it goes really well the big question I think that we all have is how much of the first team offense will we see with Caleb Williams as the quarterback? And I will say cap that it's not just about Saturday It's about against the Bengals on the 17th and against the Chiefs on the 22nd if he does play I just want him to have enough snaps to be able to understand The the ebb and flow of the game the rhythm of the game again It's just pre-season it's kind of glorified practice the point is though for Caleb Williams is paramount Same thing for a Dunes a and the other young rookies that are on this team. I Just want to see That it looks like we're progressing We were at practice the other day I watched Caleb go as you did go through his progressions and make a really sweet throw to DJ The chemistry is undeniable him with his you know guys out there now. He doesn't need to be able to go Completely baptize into the NFL for too long in the first preseason game, but I have to see him out there for sure I'm not gonna go as far as Troy I mean are some of these other veterans that thought that guy should have played a quarter or two quarters in the Houston game I won't go that far. Correct. But I still think that he's gonna have to have some time that way he gets a rhythm If the game is about Brett Ripon again, let it be about Brett Ripon But for Caleb Williams, it'll be good to see him out there completely Graham really excited. We'll get those guys out of there we're gonna see good flow, you know good execution and Once we feel good about it, we'll get them out. Are you taking Caleb out after two touchdowns or three? Well, if he gets that for sure, but you know, we just really want to see him execute operate the offense You know have a good rhythm no pre-snap penalties, you know I'm being able to go through the process of this, you know the live rush I think that's really important for him to be able to feel that Buffalo has a good rush group Which you know, give us a big challenge and him having the ability to slide and keep his eyes down field So it's gonna be a good good day for coach I said you're juiced that's a headline right there for Chicago. You're juiced about Caleb's debut What specifically do you want to see the one thing that you'll say that's why I'm playing you right now, right? Yeah, much of the same we've seen in practice. He's really accurate. He does a really nice job on the move But I just really want to see him function, you know in an NFL preseason game for the first time You know if you go back and watch and which I did I've went back and watched all the rookies that have played You know that are hydrathics, you know over the last couple years and you know, they they were they were good They had some struggles in the beginning and that's part of the process of having that experience and exposure To the game to the NFL game to the speeds of it And then being able to adjust and adapt and then overcome that and then go to the next phase of it So this is all part of the process So thoughts there from Maddy refluse Yeah, it listening to him It sounds like he definitely wants to see him handle the pressure the Buffalo will bring He wants to test his offensive line to handle the pressure Buffalo would will bring But more than all of it. He wants to watch the operation of Caleb Williams as an NFL quarterback In a hostile situation like he knows that Montez sweat coming around the edge in lake forest Isn't going to drive him into the ground right Saturday tomorrow that's Something that could happen. Mm-hmm. Hopefully not but he could absolutely get his bell run Ask what happens with rookies or I just remember when Justin feels his ears like I think The flow of the game in the NFL is much slower than it is in college. Oh, is it? Well, how did he? We should have saved that audio didn't he say something about speed? I don't think it's any faster and like really and then the he got sacked and somebody stood over with is that fast enough for you? We are again listen cap when I hear the Nate Davis story or what's going on with him You know, I think I think if he's not with the team you move on I I love the idea that people have the resume of Ryan polls in particular and say well He made this mistake and this chase clay pool thing here that hey man You're going to make mistakes or there's gonna be guys that just don't work out Whether you want to call mistakes or just guys that work you're gonna try I mean that's the trial and error of being a general manager, correct It you're not gonna be aces at the Bellagio on everything Keep telling everyone Theo Epstein said what was it 52% of your moves are gonna be good and if you're good at it If Nate Davis isn't working this doesn't work out. I mean, but He's got a soft tissue injury, which is now is week to week. It's a girl. They think it's a groin. I Would not release him yet if I think he's Doesn't want to practice if it's not a real injury. That's a different story Then I would send a message to my team Guess what see that empty locker right there that belong in Nate Davis We released him this morning and move on and and and don't care if he goes in place somewhere else and plays well We are setting a culture We'll see but it sounds like he is injured. I am interested in some of the other rookies that we don't talk enough about I want to see between now in the end of the preseason like what's going on with a Amigajay the left tackle still rehabbing from the quad injury So yeah, and it like if he gets on the field Let's see what that look if he gets on the field what that looks like because the draft to me cap is more than Kana Williams thumbs up her thumbs down Roma dunes a same thing. We expect them to be able to have some production, but we talked about Austin Booker I'm interested in just some of these other guys That were drafting not many because it wasn't a big draft for them But I want to see if there was some some base hits here here and there with some of the other players I played golf yesterday with Olin crutes and big cat Williams Yeah, and they both had watched especially Olin watches a ton of tape. He said look I haven't seen him in an NFL game yet. You're talking about Karan Amigaji. He said I will just tell you in watching tape of him There are a lot of things I like Olin is old played as a He was Angry's the wrong word. He was a very mean tough football player. Yeah ruthless aggression That's a great way to put it and that's why I think he should be the next bear to go in the Hall of Fame He's top 15 centers of all time in the history of the sport. That's Hall of Fame He said I put the tape on he said again. He played in the Ivy League That's a huge adjustment from the Ivy League to the NFL But he said once that kid's healthy. He said it jumped off the tape to him a lot of things that Olin looks for in an offensive lineman He said do I expect him to be the starting left tackle this year? No, but he said it's a developmental process But I like that kid so far You know I circled him on the depth chart cap is because you're hoping that he could be something as we continue to try to find the right Five from the offensive line. The hope is that he could develop into something like Braxton Jones as a fifth round pick same thing correct, so But just remember this as you look at the offensive line and you go Wow. So your offensive line is still very much in flux So the major like a number of them are middle shelf Coleman Shelton is not top shopping at the top shelf Ryan Bates middle bottom shelf middle Coleman Shelton's on the at the dollar store. We shop at Aldi we get the best bargains there like Wow those are still rice that door Aldi Aldi still in business. Oh, that's so bad She's like yeah, and you enjoy a whole foods you that's not where we shop cap We're hitting the sweet spot of our audience now. Don't do that You like I don't have like the graphics, you know and like the the bars and graphs to tell you who's shopping to wear But I think that's a sweet spot of our audience, but I go to jewel Yeah, I mean, that's fine. I forgot and waving proudly all right number one here I'm gonna look up and see if there's any I put my zip code in see if I can find anything And if you're the south side are like me all those three places all used to be old Walgreens or No, no like Walgreens and CVS's are closing left and right because it's not like the community needs medicine or anything It's not like the community's like you know medication and prescriptions So we'll just put keep putting dollar trees and dollar generals and all that stuff in there because everyone needs a pen It doesn't work Coming up. You can actually get access to the drugs outside of the pharmacy So bad man But it's true in some places and it's correct And I have nothing and for the record I have no problem with Aldi when you guys stop in there I got to make a quick stop Aldi if there's a crushed can of greens in there half off throw it in there Kind of like how the Bulls shopper free agency the crushed can of greens. Yeah, super cool Courtney how long should the first team offense play against Buffalo should this the same amount as Buffalo's playing Which is about a corner like we don't that's that's what Sean McDermott said yesterday So I would anticipate that it's probably gonna mirror that because that's typically You know the way that is which is go about the preseason Ebers loose told us last week that or might have been the week before the Hall of Fame game that he and Michael Ryan's Converse about you know specific plans and you know is there something you want to get out of this? Is there something that we want to get out of this? But this is your one chance that you can actually try to like help your opponent in helping yourself and trying to you know Give give certain scenarios get guys experience that you want out there. So I would anticipate Like I know flu said yesterday. What if it's a 65 play draw and like well that's gonna be a really long preseason game I think most people are gonna know I have time if that's the case. So Hopefully for everyone's sake It's a nice it keeps a nice pace that there's no weather delay like we saw in Canton But I'd anticipate a good chunk of the first quarter. You'll see Caleb Williams and the available starters out there so talk to me about Ryan polls has 21 million now in Available cap space. He hasn't extended Tevin yet. He hasn't extended Keenan Allen yet He apparently Tevin has at the bye week is when if he's healthy and playing well We'll re-engage with you guys after the trip to London during the bye week Do you believe that the 21 million in available cap space? Which I know you can roll some over in the next year is for a move now a move at the trade deadline or for off-season flexibility We know that this team is always pretty active Late October November at the trade deadline So that's it's it's a flexible. It provides flexibility to keep your options open there when you have the finances to do it Like in the event you had another month has split situation where you want to extend somebody right away after you get them here but The you know for right now I mean the offensive line is still a big question mark and yeah, we saw Connor Williams the other day You know sign as a one of the last big offensive line free agents that are out there I don't know if there's anybody that would qualify or you know in that category for the Bears to go spend big on right now But they've got to be sure that you know if they're shopping where they're light where they feel that they need to go Bring somebody else in to either create competition to bring in depth or just to have another option as a potential starter They have the freedom to do that. Well, like what have we been talking about like since the spring? What are they going to do on the defensive line? Do are they going to sign unique in got where they're going to you know Try to look for another pass rusher. They've stayed pat on that I don't know if it's going to take the first preseason game and where you see some of these starters because Montes What it's not healthy right now. He hasn't been practicing and there's other Defensive players that we're not going to see tomorrow that one might end up getting pushed out if that's a decision that they were Gonna make it that position, but elsewhere You know getting a look at what this O line is tomorrow They might have some answers that are provided as to okay. These are positions This is a position that we'll want to explore a little bit, but They they also wait for cuts to you know cut down day is three and a half weeks away Something like that at the end of August, you know They might it might not seem like the greatest upgrade if you end up poaching somebody often somebody else's cuts or if it's a You know, they did with Alex Leatherwood a couple years ago in the claim order that could be another option In them bringing somebody in where you have the financial flexibility to pay that player Cordy Conan covers the Bears for ESPN Chicago She joins us on the cap and Jhood morning show give us the best thing you saw from hard knocks and the one thing that you thought was questionable This lip inside. I thought was awesome I mean it's what a cool like out-of-the-box way to practice something that they can't practice in practice because you know the quarterback, you know, you're not sliding in practice.
