Tyler Doster, TV editor at Awards Watches with me to talk about our most anticipated shows of the upcoming fall season, what we're excited about, what we're worried about. Tyler, thank you so much for joining me. Thank you so much for having me again, Christina. I'm so excited to be here to chat with you today. So I want to start off by asking Hollywood film and TV in 2023. It was it was tough. I mean, because of the strikes, it was so much uncertainty, commissioning was slowed down. And 2024 has, of course, felt the effects of that. There's even a motto minted in Hollywood survive till 25. You just have to make it work until 25. But as an overview, are you excited about the TV coming out now after summer or are we just surviving? No, I think we're going to be thriving this fall to be honest with you. It seems like TV is back. I know last season, last fall season, we only had a few shows, you know. It was the strikes were just kind of trickling it out. So we only got things like the Gilded Age, Julia, the curse. We finished the crown last fall, but we didn't get too much more than that. I'm so excited that we have a crazy amount coming towards us this fall. We have some turning shows, new shows. And I think this fall is going to hit us a little harder, obviously. But I think, again, the survival of 25 does make sense because next year, it'll be a bigger boom as everything is back to normal. So I am very excited about this award season and this upcoming all TV season. I love it. So let's change that to thrive till 25. Right? I think we should. I think we should. There's so much good stuff going like every. I think audiences of all ages are going to be throughout this fall. So we've put together some of the things that we're looking forward to this fall. Maybe you pick some of the things you're looking forward to. I'll do. And then I have a bunch of questions for you. So go ahead and start. A couple of new series I'm talking about. Next month, FX is going to be dropping the English teacher, English teacher Brian Jordan Alvarez's new comedy. It looks very funny. I think he's a very funny comedian. So I'm interested to see what's going to happen without. This is Mr. Marcus. He is here to teach you all about non-binary. A non-binary person is somebody who does not identify as male or female. Like a hermaphrodite. No, yes. Not at all. And that word is not in use anymore. Is it? I don't know. There you go. And S? With grades like this, I'm going to have to hit the corner, sir. No vaping. I can smell it. No, you can't. You being investigated. Why doesn't Mark ever get a vestigant for all that shit he says? Well, there he is. Eric, not so speedy Gonzalez. 1751. Wow. That's a new show that I'm thrilled to see. Another I think most anticipated of the fall is of course going to be disclaimer. Apple TV has Kate Blanchett in this vehicle. Alfato Quarron has directed these seven episodes. It's going to be a psychological thriller. It's going to be premiering at Venice. So it's going to be a big fall season. I think those are the most two I'm most anticipated for, with an honorable mention for Agatha Olall. Agatha Olall is interesting. Yeah, that's like set after WandaVision with the fabulous Catherine Hahn in the lead. I'm really looking forward to that as well. That's coming in September. I want to go back to disclaimer a bit because that's also on my anticipated list. The trailer just dropped. It was hard to sort of understand what it's about. It's all very mysterious. But of course, as you mentioned, these huge names Alfonso Quarron is involved there. Beware of narrative and form. Their power can bring us closer to the truth. But because of our own deeply held beliefs and the judgments that we make, they can also be a weapon with a great power to manipulate. Ladies and gentlemen, be aware. (Music) Disclaimer, starring Kate Blanchett will be coming on Apple TV Plus. Apple also has a big series, a comedy drama adapted from Carl Heisen's novel, starring Vince Vaughn. I want to ask you, Apple is just pumping out huge shows with huge names. I mean, Gyllenhaal, Colin Farrell, Blanchett, and they also have big movies. I was just reading about Wolves, a movie coming out with Brad Pitt and George Clooney. They just said that they're only giving it a few days in theaters before it comes out on the streamer. But it's already announced that there's going to be a sequel to the movie. I'm curious about Apple TV's strategy. In general, I don't hear as much buzz about these huge shows that I do, for example, many of the other streamers' shows are people watching. No, unfortunately, I don't think they are. I really don't. I think Apple TV has some of the best programming at some points. They have some good dramas, they have some great comedies. They even have good things for children that I don't think people are aware of. But the problem with Apple TV is they are worse than Showtime is when it comes to marketing their shows. Even I have seen people, even when you go to their social media on Instagram, you will see that they post photo sets from their shows and sometimes don't even actually put what show it is in the caption. And people in the comments will literally be saying things about that. So I think that Apple TV really needs to hone in on the marketing they do for all of their technology, all of their devices. And they need to put some of that effort towards marketing their series because obviously they are expending a lot of money on these shows. But no one is really watching them. And movies. Yeah, like an insane amount. I know where I'm from in the South, in the Southern United States. Like a lot of people don't know about these Apple TV shows. When I talk about them with people or even my friends, it's the first time they've ever heard of them. And that's, you know, when you're inundated with so much television, Apple is going to have to make the effort to tell audiences this is why you should be watching us. But have they not needed to? I mean, they're just made of money, or, for example, the instigators is huge movie that just is with Matt Damon and Casey Affleck. It had like a couple days in the movie theaters and then directly on to the streaming service. And I've been asking people, no one's heard of it. It's so funny to me that Apple does this because it's one of those things where the quality is there. So you can't be too upset with them for what they do. But it's one of those things where you do want more people to know what's going on. Because like you just said, most people don't know about that movie. Most people have never heard of it outside of the sphere of keeping up with TV and film. So I think that Apple just needs to, to get more attention, they just need to not cater to, but kind of market themselves more to people who are not involved in this sphere field. And attempt to just grab some more audiences because I think if they could, they would hit mainstream a little bit easier because they've got shows like Foundation. But I think that could be a bigger show when it comes to like the sci-fi fantasy community. If it was being marketed a little bit bigger. Well, let's not complain. So many great shows and they're giving opportunities to fantastic creators. But I'm just so curious about their strategy. So I've actually seen one of the shows that I was most anticipating this fall. And I can say I loved it. And that's Industry Season 3, which premieres on Max this weekend. The show about ruthless investment bankers in London. It's so good. They've managed to get better and better every season, quite the feat. The cast is amazing. Keep a special look out this season for Ken Leung as Eric, who I think is just amazing. And it slides right into my very missed succession slot. I see you've been refreshing the comments on your article. They may have crossed my mind. Have another look. Nobody is ever going to see that image again. The contract in this place is simple. As long as I'm making money, I'm free. You're a worker. I am. I am a lover. I had a wrecking ball in that seat. I would just as quickly fire another one. Your former boss called us nine times. Either he really can't stand you, or he doesn't want anyone else to have you. Which is that? You're now the UK's largest renewable energy company. Why are you pushing this IPO? Are you even profitable? You know, ever since Pip won't put you on this, I feel like my luck has turned. For the better? [MUSIC] (dramatic music) - Say it with me. - I'm a man, and I'm relentless. - I am a man, and I'm relentless. - I'm a man! - I'm a man! - I'm a man! - I'm relentless! - I'm a man! - I am a man! - I'm relentless! - I'm a man! - And I'm relentless! (dramatic music) (dramatic music) - Peer point, Eric Tao. (laughing) - Have you been watching industry? - Yes, I think that industry, if Max could play their chords right, industry could really throw their hat in the ring for succession plus. - Yes, right? - There's an electricity to it. - I also looking forward to Pachinko season two. - Yes, oh my gosh, I am looking forward to Pachinko so much. Just a gorgeous first season television. As you can see, I'm thrilled about this. I love this show. So I'm very, yes, I'm very excited about that one as well. - Of course, for those of you that don't know, you need to catch up. It's like a sweeping saga about Korean immigrant family. It's four generations. The first season was just amazing. That's August 23rd. It'll have a global premiere. (dramatic music) - History is complicated. The story of human progress is long, messy, and riddled with controversies big and small. On conflicted, we dive head first into history's most infamous events and contentious figures. We try and untangle the good from the bad, the facts from the fiction, and the monsters from the misunderstood. Was Genghis Khan a murderous butcher or a civic pioneer? Did the Allied powers go too far in firebombing the German city of Dresden at the twilight of World War II? And how did the Marquis d'Assard acquire such a sinister reputation? And was any of it true? These are just a few of the tough questions we wrestle with and investigate on conflicted. So if you love history or just enjoy a good story, please join me, your host, Zach Cornwall, for a fascinating new topic each and every month. Conflicted a history podcast is available on Spotify, Apple, or wherever else you get your podcasts. And I hope to see you soon. (upbeat music) - A huge thing for me this fall also is going to be Saturday Night Live. Now, SNL has not always lived up to its potential and legacy the past few years, but this season we have, in case you missed it, an election, which always elevates SNL. Maya Rudolph is coming back as Kamala Harris, who's going to play Tim Walz. It's also Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary. So I'm sure there's going to be occasions for many special moments and extras. Plus, Jason Reitman's new film Saturday Night Live is premiering in October. It stars among others, Gabriel Labelle, as Lord Michaels, about the first ever SNL broadcast. So it's a big season to be expected. - I agree. I've always, even the years, by years, I'll call them, for I am not watching SNL. I always do then for presidential election years. - Hopefully they can catch that magic this time around and really cast some good people and just celebrate 50 years is going to be, they have all the opportunities to do so. So I'm looking forward to that. - They do, I hope so too. - I want to ask you about something premiering in September on Max, and that's the Penguin, starring Colin Farrell. - Well, they set up for the honest man to succeed. That should be the American dream right there. You know, a beautiful story, we're happy in there. But that ain't the way the world works. America's a hustle. (dramatic music) - Not that I'm complaining. - What are your thoughts on this? - I am neither excited nor disappointed as of right now. And it's only because I'm not really a DC person. I'm not really into these comic book things anymore. And it's because of the exhaustion. It's fatigued with it, to be honest. I would, at one point, was very into them. And I could keep up with them, but it's getting a little harder. I'm still going to watch it, because I do want to see what's going on, and I want to see how they're going to do this. But I don't think I really feel any type of way specifically towards this show. I don't have any strong feelings about it. I will say whether that I'm fascinated to see how we're going to do is American sports story. Of course, Ryan Murphy, we've gotten some good series before with American horror story, American crime story. And I remember when this was announced a couple of years back, and it's basically the American cinematic universe that feels like right here on FX. But I'm fascinated to see how that one's going to go. - One's in the air. - One's in a generation's air. - There's going to be one to watch. - What a devastating turn to me back. - Shocking allocation feels a history of violence. - Every time it's ticking time long. - You're out of control taking a disgusting waste of talent. - An unbelievable chain of events. - Magic news today out of Fire Emblem. - Just a stunning fall from grace. - I'm fascinated to see how chaos is going to go. A new Netflix series starring Jeff Goldblum as Zeus. Sort of Greek mythology. Goldblum as Zeus, I'm sold. A bunch of other people are going to be in it. Janet McTear, Eddie Isard. - It seems like a really fun cast and could be something. Do you know anything else? - I haven't heard anything else as of right now, but I am interested. And I'll tell you, it's mostly due to Mrs. Eddie Isard. I love her. I've been watching her. Actually, one of the first shows like I really became obsessed with as a kid was The Riches on FX, and she was on that. So I'm always there for her. - Humans, when they're not scared, they're not worshipping me. - I think my favorite is fire. - Look at what we've done. - Very good. ♪ If I'm old ♪ ♪ I said I didn't care ♪ - Give it to me, give it to me. - The dogs? - They don't give a shit about any of us. - I defy the gods. - I'm excited about it. - Something else I'm, I think my biggest for the fall though is it has to be what we do in the shadows. - That's just fantastic. - It is. It's one of my favorite comedies. I think it can kind of do no wrong. I think that writing staff is operating on a level that most writing rooms are not. And also that show is elevated because no other show on TV right now has met Barry on it. - Okay, a couple of returning shows that might be among the biggest in scope, Lord of the Rings season two, I have to admit season one passed me by completely. And the huge return of Squid Game season two on December 26th, will people be watching? - I think Lord of the Rings is suffering from its own marketing. I think that the first season was marketed so heavily and I mean, they started creating trailers for a year in advance before that showed anything out for announcement. And I think that show's viewership is strong. It's a strong base. The people who are going to watch it are the ones already watching it. I don't know if people who haven't seen it are going to start tuning in. I've seen half the season. I like the Lord of the Rings movies, but I've still found it kind of daunting. How long those episodes felt because there's so much world building going on. And for some people that's totally fine for me, it is just a little bit a lot to get through. Now, I think that Squid Game season two really has the potential to hit the ground again and just be as big as a cultural impact as that first season was. - I think so too. That could be so huge. - Yeah. The organic nature of how that first season grew that fan base after just a few weeks through. I think that people haven't forgotten about that show. I do hate that we live in an era where it takes so long to get a second season or third season for a show, but I am excited that they've already announced the season two this year and season three of the final season is next year. So, but I do think if they can really ride the hike, I start marketing at exactly the right time and give everybody just their ample amount of time to get excited again, it'll do just as well as the first season. - December 26 is though, it's not very Christmassy. It's a weird date, but on the other hand, people are home or more home. People maybe haven't started working yet and maybe it's a great time, but it's an odd premiere date, I think. - It is. I always am fascinated with anything that comes out on a strange date like this. I think that that marketing kind of strategy is so interesting. Yeah, it always brings me back to the girl with the dragon tattoo coming out on Christmas Day and theaters, I think in like 2011, that was just the weirdest marketing and it worked. And I hope that's what happens with Squid Game 'cause it's dark, but like you just said, there's so many people already just at home, just waiting for something to do. And I think this could be that thing, not to bring families together, but the adults of the family who get to watch the TV at night when their kids get a bed. I think they'll be excited to get to spend time watching us. - What else are you looking forward to? What about the returning shows this fall? What do you think has a lot of potential? - Of course, only murders is coming back this month. I think only murders in the building is just a great tree of comedy. It's so fantastic. Everyone that guest stores on that show brings their A-game. Anyone who's even on that show for a minute seems to be enjoying themselves. More than most people do on those shows these days, so I'm thrilled about that coming back. And of course, there's a special place in my heart for first offer, and I'm excited for another season to come back this fall. So I'm thrilled about that. Joe Locken could connor or I would protect them with my life. So I'm very excited to see that show return. - I know a lot of people are looking forward to slow horses, which is coming back in September. I wanna ask you about the Taylor Sheridan verse, which seems to be growing and growing. Apparently there's a new show with Michelle Pfeiffer. What have you heard about that? And is it coming out this fall? And what is Sheridan's verse still as huge as it has been? Host Kevin cosnor. I will say, harkening back to that I am from the American South, it's popular. I can tell you that people down here watch it. Now, I'm not one of those people. It's a lot. It's becoming its own cinematic universe, as you just called it, the Taylor Sheridan verse. It's, I personally am not going to be engaged in it. I did see that Michelle Pfeiffer is going to be in that series, Montana. I don't know if that one's coming out this year. I'm thrilled that this one's not named after a year. That makes it a little bit easier to keep up with, because I get those two spells, very confused. Every single time I try to talk about them, I can't even do it now, 'cause I don't know what they are. I just keep forgetting, but I do think they're popular. Now, it will be interesting to see what happens after Kevin cost her. But I do think that they're still gonna flourish, to be honest, I don't think that's gonna slow down their momentum too much, as long as they just keep pumping out seasons. And that's what I will say about Yellowstone and this universe is. These audiences are getting these seasons. That probably is a huge reason why they're able to keep their audiences. They're not having to years and years for these new seasons, you know? So I think that does actually have a big part, play a part in it, so. - And Michelle Pfeiffer piqued my interest. I'm not either part of the shared inverse much. I mean, I've seen enough to be able to speak about it in a professional way, but otherwise it's not sort of something I pick on my own time. But I mean, Pfeiffer is interesting in this. I mean, she feels very from another world to me. - Yeah, they're definitely-- - They're definitely strong. - Her husband, her TV verse. - They're definitely trying to bring in an audience. They're making sure. They said, we're gonna appeal to people who might not already be watching a show and see if they might be interested. And I won't lie, it's Michelle Pfeiffer. Maybe I will be interested. You know, I'm not thrilled about it. But yeah, I'll watch that first step 'cause I just see what's going on. And maybe that's what they're banking on. So I'm excited to see at least their strategy because even if I'm not watching a show, I always love to see how TV operates. - And we have the Emmys coming up just a month or so, which is of course this last season. In terms of awards of what we've been talking about here, do you have any very early hunches as to who might be talked about next time around? - I think what I'm thinking already, I already have an inkling that with the high revolving around industry season three, I think that if they push it the right way, we're gonna see that really litter through the nominations next year. I think that could be a huge contender, honestly. - Oh, that would be so fun. Why do you think that's hitting so hard now? It took a while for it to build up. But what's sort of gone on with that show? - It did, I think that show, and I'm not even gonna use the word suffrage from, but I think that show is just part of the HBO playbook where sometimes they don't get an audience or either fast, but HBO, Max, the whole, that streamer, that network is very good about letting it shows breathe out and giving it the room and its face to create something before they really are like, they'll give it a chance, whereas we see with Netflix, they're one season, no audience, goodbye. HBO doesn't mind allowing these shows to gain an audience. And I think that's why they gain the audience because their quality is there and then the word of mouth just precedes it. So I think the lack of succession, the lack of an appointment viewing from that network right now, now the House of the Dragon isn't on the air anymore. Like, now succession is all we don't have last of us are white lotus yet until next year. I think they're just gonna play their cards with this right now. And I think that with this kind of drama, people crave the selecturicity when they're watching a drama. They're, while we love things like House of the Dragon, where we're getting a subtle drama and that slow interpersonal relationship, industry moves quickly. Even in the moments that it doesn't, it feels fast paced. It feels like you're moving along with something very quick. And it makes it feel like when the episode's over, wow, how did that end so fast? Which is something viewers really loved. So I think that a series like that has found its footing and is now reaping the rewards of being able to say, now we can gain this audience because we've been doing the work that this third season we're getting the word of mouth for both critics and audience alike to really bump us up. - And it has such an electric cast. They're so good and press now. As you're saying, they seem kind of alone on the field now on Sundays and like it could really become a momentum for everyone on that show. So I'm looking forward to that. They deserve it too, 'cause the season is really good. Bingeable as hell. - Yeah, it's, and I think that's the most fun thing about some of these shows is the bingeability and then we get it weekly. So it's one of those things where we do want to watch it, but we're given the space to dissect it daily for seven days. - Talk about it, listen to other people, analyze it that I love that. - It could be exact same for me. I spend most of my time either watching TV or reading people's thoughts about TV and stuff like that. So weekly releases are so much fun because the water cools our nature of being able to jump on the internet the next day, those of your friends jump on the Zoom call, do anything and start discussing it and hearing the difference and subjective opinion is so fun. - Do you think that TV producers and networks and streamers are starting to realize that? 'Cause there's always been this discussion of should we just dump them like the bear and the whole season at once? Are people starting to realize maybe we should go back to weekly? - It's an interesting question because sometimes it feels like they are listening. Sometimes you know with even prime video, make sure that we get the boys usually all weekly released. What's funny about that is they don't do that with some shows, so fall now famously earlier this year all dropped at one time and everyone was confused about that. So then you go over to show places like Netflix where the boyfriend came on last month and that was a big thing. That reality show actually did pretty well because they released only two episodes at a time. So it gave people the time to talk about it. I personally am always gonna be a huge proponent of weekly release. I love being able to sit with a show's episode. I think we've got a little bit spoiled and while I do think it is okay to binge and show that it's totally fine and some shows aren't meant to be binged, I think for the majority it's more fun to sit with a show for weeks a week that way you can discuss it, sit with it and you'll have whole new theories about the time you do the next episode and maybe even in a different understanding of the previous episode by the time you've seen it 'cause you've had the time to think about it whereas when you're binging you just don't get that. - So I guess concluding we're kind of predicting that industry is gonna be really talked about and discussed and maybe even go the awards route. Squid game is gonna be huge at the end of the year. Do you see a particular streamer doing really well? - I'm gonna continue, I'm gonna keep going with HBO. I'm always gonna put my money on them. I can't ever back down from them because they have this strategy that's been working for them. They are, when it comes to the Emmys every year, they're the Ochi's crazy amounts of nominations and I think I'm always gonna be excited and at least give a little bit of attention to anything that's gonna come on that network. - So Apple TV needs to take a look at how they're doing. - I think Apple TV has the quality, they just really need to amp up and mark the way that HBO does. - Tyler, thank you so much, this was great. I agree with you now, having talked it through with you that it's gonna be thrived to 25. - Well, thank you so much for having me. I agree, I think we're gonna have a great TV season and I think next year is gonna boom a creative amount of television that we haven't seen yet. - Thank you so much. - Thank you for having me, Kristina, it's always a pleasure. - Well, hey podcast listener.
