After getting my summer sweat on in radio land, I just, I just really like to freshen up with the towel. I don't use fabric softener in my jar, but I use a radio tuned in to CGSW 90.9 FM Calgary. It keeps my towels extra fresh. Mmm, that's some fresh radio. CGSW 90.9 FM. Fresh radio. [Music] Hi, this is DJ Jesse Locke, and you're tuned in to CGSW 90.9 FM. Broadcasting from this place we call Calgary, Alberta, or Mulcain Stis. In the spirit of reconciliation, we acknowledge that we live, work, and play. On the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy, which includes the Sikzika, the Pinai, and the Pikani. The Sutina, the Makota Nations, and the Métis Nations with an Alberta District 6, and all people who make their homes in the 3D7 region of Southern Alberta. Well, it's 11.03, you're listening to CGSW 90.9 FM, CGSW.COM on the Internet. This is speaking in tongues, the World Music Show, my name is Darrell, and I'm with you on this Heritage Day long weekend until 1 o'clock, when some version of E will be here. I'm assuming I'm not aware that there's going to be any pre-recorded or anything like that. For E at 1 o'clock for the dip, I am here in the flesh, and we have a little bit of a different start to today's show. In that, it's been a while since I've done an interview just right at the very start of a program, but that's exactly what we're doing today. And I'm just going to turn on a second microphone in the studio here, guess my number one. And I am going to say hello, and you are going to say hello. You see just to be listeners are going to say hello to Mariela, who is here from Expo Latino, which is coming up Friday, August the 16th, Saturday, August the 17th, and Sunday, August the 18th, and that's going to be at Prince's Island, where you may have just been last weekend for the Calgary Folk Music Festival, but Expo Latino is going to be setting up there, too. It is a really nice looking three-day festival, and we're going to be talking to Mariela about that festival. By the way, just in case you are keeping score at home, and you would like to load a website, as you're listening to this interview, you can go to ExpoLatino01word.com, where you can get information about the festival, including the music, the 2024 lineup, including the art show and sale, and food vendors are all full for the island. I think I heard Mariela say when we were talking just before this interview, but Expo Latino is still looking for a few vendors for the arts market. So keep that in mind, keep that in the back of your mind as we're doing the interview here. But again, ExpoLatino.com, and we'll talk to Mariela as well about the various social media where you can find out information about the festival. So probably Facebook, Madder, probably Instagram, probably Twitter, X, threads, probably others, too, TikTok, maybe. So Mariela, welcome to C.J.W., to speaking in tongues, the world music show. So we're going to talk about Expo Latino, and you are involved as the artistic director and producer of Expo Latino, and what your kind of role or presence, I guess you would say, is larger than that, in that you were also involved with the kind of parent organization, I guess you would say, or umbrella organization that hosts Expo Latino. So I'll just have you introduce yourself, because I'm eager to bring C.J.W. listeners up to speed about Expo Latino, what it is, how long it's been around, just a little bit to tell people about the history of the festival, but familiar with it at all, and to have you kind of introduce the festival to listeners so that they know what kind of a weekend experience they can expect when they buy tickets. Sure, thank you, Dara, for this opportunity to connect to your audience. Yes, I'm Mariela Parra, and the president of the Hispanic Art Society, the Expo Latino Festival, is one of the events that we produce, and I'm being with the organization for the last seven years, but the organization has been around for 37 years, and the Expo Latino this year, we are celebrating the 28 edition. So I'm proud to share that Expo Latino has been a vibrant celebration of Latin culture for, yes, these 28 years now, and the festival is going to take place from August 16 to 18 at the beautiful Princess Island Park, as you said. Basically, the Expo Latino is a rich fusion of Latin music, dance, art, performing, and gastronomy, showcasing the diversity, vibrancy of Latin American culture. Okay, so that's the festival in a nutshell. It's been around for 28 years, for those of you who didn't know that. I do want to underline that because, actually, that's an impressive longevity for a festival, because there's so much involved with organizing a festival, certainly on its current scale. There's lots that can go wrong. There's lots of things, unexpected things that can happen, like COVID. I'm sure that was a real struggle during COVID to, you know, be able to keep the festival going and vibrance from the pre-COVID year through COVID, and then the post-COVID year. That's a challenge right there. But sometimes things happen that can affect the finances of the festival. So for the festival to have lasted 28 years as a real accomplishment, it didn't used to be at Prince's Island, you were talking about the fact that it used to be at the adjacent square, right by the Eau Claire market, which is just about to be torn down, actually. That's right. Yeah, I explained it in a small event at Eau Claire Plaza. And then it was glowing, and we have to move over to Olympic Plaza. But for the last 12 years, has been at Prince's Island Park, which is even better, because we can have more areas at the park, and actually we have these kicks area. And this year we are introducing more visual artists working with kicks. And the idea is to produce our works that we want to exhibit February, March for next year. And I have to highlight that there is a donor that has been giving us a lot of gains, instead of animals for kicks, so we can exchange those gifts for them if they want to leave their work with us for the exhibition. That's something really cool and nice. We are going to be great. Great idea. Great idea. Yeah. And in the arts market, generally, so it's mostly paintings. There might be some other things too, but mostly paintings, I think you said. Yeah, for the art exhibition, that's for adults, we have an art zone. And this year we are bringing five sculptures, like an 8.5 height sculptures. Those are our original design and has been exhibited at the Teles Convention Center, municipal building, gain some place, the Calgary airport. During the three days, if anyone that is listening to this program hasn't had the opportunity to see these sculptures, we're inviting them to come to the island. And after that, they are going to be exhibited at the Alberta University of the Arts until from August 19th to October 1st. Okay, and most or all of the art that will be there is for sale. Is that right? Yes. Okay, okay. Now, it doesn't take much prompting to get me talking about food. You might have guessed that looking at my figure, but the variety of Latin food that will be available on the island, and you've got lots of enders, it sounds like. What sorts of food gastronomic delights are people going to be able to find there? That's right, empanadas, Colombian food, also Peruvian, and a lot of Latin American food. Even the dreams, you're going to be able to get the pops from different Latin American countries, but mean us with the Brazilian food that's going to be there as well. And that's happened that I saw then at the taste of Calgary, and they are amazing. Nice. So this is going to be a real all-encompassing experience for people who go down, especially for all three days, they're going to be able to sample from a wide variety of food. Take a look at all the various artists who are displaying their works, which are mostly paintings. There is the children's area that you were talking about. And again, what a great idea that if a child and their parents bring in a piece of art, work that the child has made, you can exchange it. I think you were saying for like a stuffed animal. Yeah. What a great idea. Now, the music is, you know, that's the main thing on the weekend. Friday, August 16th, Saturday, the 17th, and Sunday, the 18th. We were talking before we went on air that the majority of the artists are local artists. There's one from Edmonton, but you kind of have, I don't know if it's kind of set in stone, but there's a percentage of the artists that should have been Latin Grammy awards nominees or winners, was it? Yeah, that's actually an staple of our festival. That at least one of the international heckliners has to be letting Grammy nominee. This year, we are bringing Leoni Torres. He is a Cuban singer, composer, a musical producer. And he has been nominated in 2021 and 2022 for the awards. So he is coming here. Is you following him on 45 or go to YouTube? Mostly their songs are hicks, most of them. So just to bring Leoni to the park and have everybody listening to the song. And he is a dancer too. So he is a complete artist. Okay. I should probably play the track that you identified of his to give people a taste of what he sounds like. And he, by the way, is playing on the Saturday night. He winds up the evening starting at nine o'clock on main stage on Saturday, August the 17th. But just before we do that, I wanted to talk a little bit about, because we know something now about the range of culinary items that are going to be available, a little bit about the artwork. But what about the range of music, the range of styles? Is some of it more traditional? Is some of it very much contemporary? What is the range of music that people will hear throughout the three days? We are having traditional lighting music, but also you can expect a variety of performances, including salsa, merengue, EVN, lighting house, techno, kumbia. Okay. Yeah. And if you're from the Latin community, you would see your music here, your music represented some time during the weekend, it sounds like there will be almost a little bit of everything from the Latin world that you could hear here weekend. Yeah. If you want to hear any musical genre from Latin America, Expo Latino is a perfect festival, because we're trying to balance all the musical genres, you're going to have a little bit of no tenure music from Mexico, regional music, folkloric music, any music to dance as well. Another example here, just randomly, Fabian Santamaria, Colombian, Valgiano, kumbia, and rock fusion, another example. So you're going to get a little bit of everything. And you know, when I consider that, and when I compare Expo Latino, for example, and it's line up to the Calgary Folk Music Festival, every year that I go to Calgary Folk Music Festival, it's always the case. Even though I've done this radio show for more than 30 years, even though I listen to a lot of different kinds of music, even though I'm around this radio station and this radio station plays so many different kinds of music, it's always the case that I discover artists that I didn't know at all, or that I didn't know very much, and I hear them play, and it turns out that I love them, and it doesn't matter that they weren't kind of headliners and that I didn't know them already, it turns out that I really like them. And I'm sure it's going to be like that for Expo Latino as well, that you're going to be able to go to a festival like that. Some of the artists you will know, especially if you're from the Latin community, and some of them you won't know, but it won't matter because it's going to turn out that they're going to be great, and you're going to love them. Yeah. Just one on that subject, do you have like a merchandise tent where some of the artists will be selling maybe their music CDs final possibly? Do you have that too, and another festival merchandise? Yeah, not this year. Okay. Not this year. Okay. Yeah, but we're going to be just selling our teacher design edition for this year. That's going to be available for purchase. Okay. The festival teacher. Okay. Okay. Because it's coming with elemental reality. Okay. The teacher is something new this year. Okay. One more thing just before I play the Leonia Torres track, probably we've peaked the interest of a lot of people who maybe were on the fence considering whether they were going to get tickets for the festival. There's going to be other people who didn't know the festival was coming up, but now that they know it's like to go ticket information. Can you buy weekend passes as well as single day passes that kind of thing? Absolutely. Okay. They can go to expolitino.com where platform is show pass, so they can get tickets. If they go to expolitino.com, there is a huge pattern that says buy tickets. It takes to the ticket platform. Okay. And there is something interesting about tickets that kicks 12 and under. They can come to the park for free. The same senior, 65 and plus because we try to encourage have, you know, like, um, enjoyment in family with the family. So I don't want, I don't want that people is left at home because they can not afford a ticket. That's terrific too. That's terrific too. And I mean, we're in the dog days of summer. It's been so hot for so long. It's going to be a little bit cooler. It sounds like starting next week. So people are going to want to be outside maybe a little bit more. People who have been finding it a little bit too hot. They're going to want to do things. And I'm hoping that it's a comfortable temperature around that weekend too. I hope too. Yeah. August 16th, 17th and 18th. So here's an idea for you. The Expo Latino and once again, it's expolatino.com. And tickets are available either single day passes or weekend passes. But let's play some music from Lumi Torres. And you picked out this track in particular. Can you just introduce it a little bit of why you picked that one? I think that I like that song because it's like a high energy song. And it's called passando la bien. And in English, it's like a less half fun or having fun. And that's what I want everybody active festival. You know, comes to have fun at the festival. Especially with the whole family. Right. That sounds absolutely perfect. So we're going to hear Lumi Torres. And that's Angola bien. And I'm just going to do the aux here. When we come back, I thought we should talk a little bit about... Because some people are going to want to find out more information about the festival. They might want to see some photos of pass festivals they might. Maybe it's music clips from pass festivals or the current festivals. Can they get those through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter. So we'll talk about that when we come back after we hear this track. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] So there he is, Leonie Torres playing on Saturday August 17th at 9 p.m. on Prince's Island as part of Expo Latino. That was the title track from Passendola Bien and I am here with Mariela from Expo Latino. She is the producer and the artistic director and we've been chatting about the festival and how long it's been around and a little bit about its characteristics and what you're going to experience there. This year and we'll remind you one more time to please go to the festival website which is expolatino.com. As you've been listening you might have been wanting to have an opportunity to visit Expo Latino on social media. And let's have Mariela just talk to us a little bit about where people can find more information about the festival generally. You can see music clips of artists who are playing this year for example. You may have that on Instagram or? Yeah, we mainly use Instagram. You can find us at expolatino. We have clicked video clips for every single artist, heck liners that we are going to be bringing this year. By the way when people go down to the festival there's many different kinds of festivals but when they go down to Prince's Island for Expo Latino. If they bring a chair it should be the festival style chairs that are a little bit lower. I'm sure that a lot of people are going to want to be standing up and dancing and I'm sure that that's going to be very much encouraged. But if you do bring a chair it should be probably the lower ones the festival type chairs. Yeah, that's right. Do you permit any outside food or drink or do you want people to go to the vendor market and buy food and drink there and experience it? But is any outside food or drink permitted? No, because the idea is to experience the Latin American food. And when you arrive at the festival it sounds like the way to get in the entrance to it is at the south end of the island. So that would be the island kind of closest to the center street bridge. That end of the island is where you access the festival site. Yeah, because the West Gate is only for volunteers, staff, the performers. Okay, okay. I'm just trying to think of any other details about the festival that we ought to cover. One that occurs to me, like I know that the Calgary Folk Music Festival has 1,700 volunteers. I volunteer for it too. Expo Latino, roughly ballpark company, volunteers to zit have. And are you still looking for any volunteers in any capacity? Oh, yes. We encourage community involvement through volunteer opportunities, and we still need a lot of volunteers. Okay. So that is you want to come to the festival and help us. We on the website, exploretina.com, there is a box. When you scroll down, it says I want to be a volunteer and just register there. Okay. So you register, is there any particular training that a volunteer would need to go through to? Yes, it depends on the different areas. We have at least one, two, three, four, like a five different areas at the park. We have the coordinators for each area. Yeah, for sure. They are going to receive a training. Usually is the same week of the festival. Okay. So there is still time not only to sign up as a volunteer to express an interest, but to get the training to do it. Okay. And certainly we would want to encourage people to do that. Two festivals really are, or sorry, volunteers really are the lifeblood of a festival. I mean, apart from selling tickets, the volunteers are what make it happen. I mean, you have the vision as the producer and the artistic director, but without volunteers, and I guess maybe a few staff, you can't make it happen, can you? That's right. Yeah, no. We always look at a full phase. We say, hopefully one day we can have like a once, some volunteers. And I know that they have volunteers that are on the waiting list as well. Right. And being volunteer with Venn. And yeah, someday we would like to have the same amount of volunteers available for us. Okay. Does Expo Latino, by the way, have any other events during the year? Any other kind of one-off concerts or anything like that? Yes. Actually, yesterday on Fridays of July and August, we have salsa on the street. And you say a nice concept because we have different DJs rotating every Friday. Dance instructor from the lighting academies. They teach people how to dance salsa, merengue bachara. And at the end, usually we have a live band. Next Friday, it's going to be the last event for salsa on the street with the same concept. But also, we are going to be giving away some weekend tickets for the Expo Latino. Okay. And that's on a stiffen avenue. On a stiffen avenue. Yeah. And to keep yourself in the loop, about when those one-off events are coming up, you could go to Expo Latino on Instagram, probably other social media too. Do you have like a mailing list so that people can get notified when there's an event coming up? Oh, yes. Remember that the Expo Latino salsa on the street, they are events. But they are under the umbrella of the Hispanic Art Society. Okay. So we put all the information about every single event on the Hispanic Art Doxiate website. Okay. So that's good to know. So some of those events are going to be music related. And some of them may be not necessarily, but that would be the way to keep track of those events. We have another one in November. Is the celebration of the Day of the Death, the Mexican tradition. Okay. Mexican celebration. We usually are doing this in partnership with the Fonda Fora Mexican festival, Mexican restaurant, sorry. Okay. Okay. I do have what I think is the correct track lined up for Ariana Bo. What I'm seeing is that Switzerland's Tequila, that's the song. And the version I'm seeing is with jet lag music and Lazy Bear. I don't know them, but they're on this track with Mariana Bo. So Tequila, there's both a regular mix and an extended mix. We can play either one. And Mariana Bo is playing on Friday night at 9.30 pm. And it says right on the Expo Latino website, 43rd best DJ in the world according to DJ magazine in 2023. But just tell us a little bit more about Mariana Bo. Well, Mariana Bo, she is one of the few female DJs in the world. And she is going up every year. So she's from Mexico. And she has been opening for the most important DJs in the world. I'm talking about De Baguera or Te Esto, the day Te Esto. And she has been in the main festival in the world. Like in Tomorrowland, she is going to Asia soon. She has like three, four cities that she's going to be covering. And she's all the time in tour. So it's going to be something really, really great to have her here in Calgary. OK, so something very much to look forward to, Mariana Bo. And indeed, Expo Latino is something to look forward to. One more time, visit ExpoLatino.com, kind of a one-stop shop. If you like for all your festival information. And at the bottom of the website, I see, you know, follow us. You can follow on Facebook and X. And is that Reddit? I'm not sure what social media that is. But anyway, Instagram is really the main one, though really, for to access music clips and things like that. Have I forgotten to ask you anything about Expo Latino that you would like to communicate before we wind up, Mariela? Of course, this year, for the first time, we are introducing augmented reality. Right, yes. Yeah, that's something really cool. When you come to the park, we have different, at least 15 Xbox with QR codes. When you scan that code with your mobile device, it could be a tablet, it could be your cell phone, you want to see things in the sky or on the ground. And those have been related to Latin America. OK. So you can know more about, for example, facts of different Latin American countries to these augmented reality experience. OK. Will you, by the way, be having a 50/50 as a quantum wizard during the weekend? Yes. You will. This year, we are having a 50/50. Because I'm the sort of person who always likes to have a 50/50 ticket, so that's good to know. Will those only be on sale during the festival weekend? So from the Friday to the Sunday, is that one? We are trying to start selling them a week before. OK. That's good to know, too. So, you know, well, buy as many tickets as you like. I don't know what the price of your 50/50 tickets will be. But what, by the way, do you have any way of kind of estimating, guesstimating what the likely attendance will be? Like, for the festival weekend, is it several thousand every day? Is that what you would think? That's right. It was easier before pandemic. Right. But after pandemic, we have been, for the 2022, we have the power for one concert that was for the Saturday concert. We have around 8,000 people. That date. But 2024, we are expecting something like it probably between 5,000 people in the park. OK, or less, this year is going to be the real year that we are going to know that we can come back to normal numbers, pre-pandemic. But there will be plenty of music for everybody. There will be plenty of food for everybody. And within the food vendors area, there will be plenty of things to look at and to purchase if you would like to. And the arts market, 2050/50 tickets. And don't forget, children under the age of 12 get in free. And seniors, is that over the age of 65? 65 can get in free. And you can get single day tickets and weekend passes as well. And you can access that link through expoletino.com. And again, visit Instagram in particular for other festival related stuff. So, Berriela, thanks so much for dropping by. It's pretty quiet around campus today. But I know it's a bit of an effort for you to come to CW here and talk about the festival. So, thank you for making the effort to do that. I wish you all the best with the festival. I should say that I won't be able to go this year because my wife and I are going to be out of the country. We're going to be in Hawaii still right up until August 17th. So, unfortunately, I won't be able to join you and enjoy the festival this year. But I look forward to future festivals and certainly I encourage CW listeners to join you there. And that's August 16th, 17th and 18th. So, thanks again. I really enjoyed our talk and all the best. Good luck with the festival. Thank you so much that room. Okay. Mariana Boat, let's do the extended mix of tequila. Let's give this one a good go. Go! [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Well, it wasn't that fun. And I kind of towards the end of the evening, she'll be playing. You're listening to cdsw90.9 fmcw.com on the nets. My name is Darrell. I've been here for roughly. And I think what I will do is play a track from Fantastic Negrito, who was just as charismatic, just as colorful, just as musically awesome as he was the first time I saw him. He's great. He can take over main stage. He can take over a side stage and a workshop too as a kind of a, as a maestro. Last week when we did the show live on the island. And I think I'll do one called Shigemaboo Blues. Fantastic Negrito. All kinds of things can happen in the world. All kinds of things can happen in the world.
