First an update on Tropical Storm Debbie and its impact on Rockingham County. Last night around 7 30 Williamsburg fire department responded to Clearwater Lane in Brown's Summit and found a large oak tree had fallen on a mobile home killing the resident, a woman aged 78. The tree cut through the home from the roof to the foundation. There have been seven storm-related deaths, 19 reports of tornadoes in the southeast and more than a foot of rain in four states. Between three to five inches of rain in Rockingham County, a flood warning is in effect until two o'clock today for Rockingham Stokes and Caswell counties. Lots of trees down all over Rockingham County. Ruffin, Ayersville, Eden, Madison May at end, Stoneville Price and Church Street Extension into Guilford County. Spencer Odell with the NC Department of Transportation in Rockingham County told me last night, crews had already cleared at least 60 trees. Moore are expected to come down. Seven to eight crews were working yesterday. Three back hoes, dump trucks and other equipment. Last night River Road was closed in two places and Wolf Island Road at Wolf Creek. DOT is in public safety mode now clearing trees and debris and will start cleaning up as soon as possible. If you see high water and trees down call 911. Rockingham County Schools is getting a 7.8 million dollar grant from the US Department of Energy for efficiency improvement projects at 12 schools. As buildings age so does their energy infrastructure driving up maintenance costs and utility bills. According to Jean Kelly, energy specialist for Rockingham County Schools annual energy costs are approximately three million dollars. He's hoping to decrease that by 15% by making improvements. The district is working with Johnson Controls, a world leader in autonomous buildings.
