This is Wisconsin's weekend morning news with Liddy Collins. And it is a great Sunday morning, especially around southeastern Wisconsin. Tiff, I don't remember any weekend where we have had this many things going on simultaneously. All at one time, right? Yeah. I mean, you've got the air show. And even if you're not on the lakefront, boy, you can hear those jets going overhead. It's a little distracting when you're trying to work, but you know, okay, it's going to bank and then they're going to go away. And you just keep waiting for the next cycle of, when are they going to bank around us? And then they're going to keep going. It's super exciting when you're in the city. It really is. And in addition to that, I mean, if you like planes, EAA's been going on, and you've got Harley Fest. So if you're not hearing jets, you're hearing hogs. And you're also hearing the sounds of polka music coming out from the summer fest grounds. Wow. German fest. Yeah. It's like Germans. They don't do polka. That would be Polish fest. They do the leader, Hosen. Oh, that's right. Yeah. They're still accordions. I love it. I love it. All the accordions and people are dancing and enjoying the beautiful things about our city here in the summer. And the great food. It's all about the food. The, the, the Raladin and the brats and the sauerkraut. Just give me a potato pancake. I'm good to go. Yeah. Yeah. You know, and it's just that good. And that's not even to mention all of the church festivals going on and the various other community events. I mean, if you can't find something to do this weekend, you're not even trying. I love Milwaukee in the summertime. I love southeastern Wisconsin because we spend so much of our winter hold up inside. We're hardy people. Don't get me wrong. We will get outside. We'll enjoy our winter sports. Speak for yourself, too. But in the summertime, I love being outside and enjoying what Wisconsin has to offer this time of year. And especially since it hasn't been terribly humid this weekend, but hold on to your hats because it's going to get that way, you know, this time last week, we were talking about, uh, well, of course, the RNC had just ended. We were talking about president Biden, will he be in? Will he be out and how things have changed in a week. It's been very busy in our newsroom. If you've been listening to a lot of our coverage, we have been busy for like the solid last three weeks. We all need a little bit of a break and no more political news to happen. But you know what? The political cycle is what's exciting about Wisconsin being a purple state. Exactly. And this weekend or this week, I should say, I had the opportunity to talk with now. She's been running for democratic for the democratic nomination on and off for at least the last five years. And that's Mary Ann Williamson, whom I find to be a fascinating person. And I had the opportunity to talk with her because she is, she's fired up because she wants an open convention and she had some really interesting things to tell me and we're going to share that with you a little bit later on. And you know, talking about fun things to do around Milwaukee. Are you aware, Tiff, there are two hotel bars right here in the city, which are up for special recognition by USA Today? Go Wisconsin. Right. And we're going to tell you which ones and also how to vote for your favorite plus our consumer expert. Michelle Ryanin is going to be here with us and she's going to warn us about summer vacation scams. Yep. That's right. If you were thinking you were going to get a last minute deal, you better be careful on which websites you check because it could just be the wrong one. Plus, did you know that the largest group of pancreatic cancer survivors ever are going to meet all at once at Amfam Field next weekend? And the former medical director for the Milwaukee Brewers, Roger Kavlinger, who is a pancreatic cancer survivor, is going to tell us about that event. We're going to hear from him a little bit later on. We've also got Rich Kirchen from the Milwaukee Business Journal. He's going to tell us about a Brookfield restaurant, which had a really hot opening. Everybody was talking about it, everybody want to get in, but they've closed their doors without any fanfare. Plus, if you're an Olympics aficionado, well, Matt Miller from I'm Milwaukee.com is going to tell you how and where to watch all of your favorite events. Eric Bilsted is here with an everyday hero. We're going to look back at the weekend review. We've got Tif Pua here in the newsroom, Isaac's pushing buttons, and in just two minutes it's Mark Court with Sports right here on WTMJ. It's Wisconsin weekend morning news, and we have 74 degrees at 812 on WTMJ. Time for a WTMJ sports update from the Gruber Law Offices One call that's all sports desk. The Brewers just couldn't operate at home last night and fell once again to the Marlins, the lowest ranked team in the MLB with a seven to three loss. They look to avoid the sweep today and our coverage starts at noon with Brewers warm-up with Dominic Catronio. Meanwhile, the Packers are feeling the love. Here's Greg Matzak. Love and the Packers agree to a four-year, $220 million contract, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, making him the highest paid quarterback in NFL history. Love also gets a record $75 million signing bonus, plus $155 million in new full guarantees. Love was due to make $11 million this season. Greg Matzak, WTMJ News. I'm Isaac Mark Whart, WTMJ Sports. I'm still shaking my head. I mean, he had nine good games last year, but to be the highest paid quarterback in the league, wow. I know, despite the fact that I'm doing sports, I'm really not that much of a sports guy, but our other weekend producer Evan is, and I said to him yesterday, I said, did I just miss something that he, he was actually really good? Like I thought he was pretty good. He's good. I didn't think he was to be an NFL player. You got to be good. I didn't realize he was, he was the highest paying contract in franchise history. Well, can you imagine how Aaron Rodgers feels right now? Anyway, it's 8-16, we're up to 74 degrees, we're going to tell you about your forecast and also Rich Kirchen from the Milwaukee Business Journal is going to be joining us. Oh, what's Coles doing now? They're adding something. We'll tell you about that. And so much more. It's all I had on Wisconsin weekend morning news. Depending on where you are, it's a little bit overcast this morning. Now they're saying there might be a little chance for a scattered shower here and there, but it's more this afternoon that we're looking at where we might see some showers and storms later in the day. It's going to be mostly cloudy though, warm and humid. We'll get up to about 83 degrees and tomorrow. Looks partly sunny, again, another chance of some scattered showers and storms and a high of 86, Tuesday even warmer, hot and humid, 88, Wednesday, partly cloudy, chance of rain and storms, 87 for high and it's getting redundant because Thursday, partly cloudy, a chance of rain and storms and a high of 86. Waking up around Wisconsin on this Sunday morning, Cedarburg, you are at 71 degrees. Brookfield is 71, Oak Creek has 71 and we have 74 degrees at WTMJ at 819. Well, we've got Rich Kirchen here from the Milwaukee Business Journal and Rich, it's just been an amazing weekend and you had the opportunity on Friday night to see some of those big acts. Yes, well, Jelly Roll was the headliner and, you know, I like him by the way. Yeah, I gotta say, I never heard of him before they announced him as the headliner, but yeah, and it's a different musical mix than last year for Harley where they had a couple of older rock and roll bands, Green Day and Foo Fighters, this time going with Jelly Roll one night, country wrap hip hop, whatever he does, and then Red Hot Chili Peppers going back to sort of that 90s rock playbook. Now, why has Harley switched to an annual celebration instead of doing it every other year? Every five years. Yeah. Well, as far as I understand it and Yogan Zites, the company CEO reiterated that this past week that sounds like it was this decision, I'm sure it had to be approved by the marketing department and all that, but he thought that why I just hold a celebration every five years, there are big motorcycle rallies in other places that Harley participates in, Daytona and Sturgis. He wants to build up the homecoming to be the same kind of thing every year in Milwaukee and bring in riders from all around the world. How does that affect Harley's business? Well, I mean, it's mostly about brand building and it's about building on that connection that the company has with its riders. You know, if they're willing to ride here from hundreds or thousands of miles away and spend some time, you know, visiting the museum, hanging out with each other, going to the dealerships, it's sort of the ultimate way of connecting with your customers. All right. But business-wise, how is Harley doing? Because I know you had a couple of stores this week. Well, it was the tale of two Harley's. First of all, on Thursday, they reported sales and earnings that were higher than the stock analysts expected and their stock actually went up a bit initially. And you know, shipments were up, things were looking pretty good. That's for the quarter that ended June 30th that they just reported. However, in the meantime, I followed up on some statements that their chief financial officer made during the call with the stock analyst where he talked about slowing down production of motorcycles. So I thought, gee, what's that about? And reached out to the company, they didn't have any further comment, but I also got a hold of the steel workers union, which represents the majority of the workers at the plant in Menominee Falls. And he informed me that actually the company had implemented what they're calling temporary layoffs and they are slowing down production. About one week a month is the plan sort of through the end of the year for those employees who work at the plant. In Menominee Falls, there's a plant in Tomahawk and there's a plant in Pennsylvania. So they're slowing down production and the workers are not there full-time. What does that mean? That means the company is trying to reduce the inventory at their dealerships. They're saying 30%. They think there's a mismatch between the number of bikes they've been making and the number that the dealers have been selling. Is it an economic slowdown? Is it the interest rates? Not sure. All right. Well, maybe the economy isn't everything that we hope for right now because one of those places that opened with great fanfare at the Corners and Brookfield closed very quietly here. Tell us about what happened. Wallburgers, at one point they had two locations in the Milwaukee area, one in the Third War that closed last year and then the one at the Corners in Brookfield. The owners of the shopping center tell us that they made a decision that they wanted to go with a different mix of businesses in their shopping center. Hard to say what that means. I only went to the Wallburgers out there once shortly after it opened and at that point it was a big deal and it was packed. So I did a quick little look around for news on them. It seems like it's not unusual for them to close locations or have locations closed. But as far as I know it's still a viable business and a going concern. But it's interesting you said you went there once and you didn't go back because everybody I've talked to had that same experience. They'd go once to see what it was all about and do your thing. Right. You have to have that repeat business as the thing the novelty wears off. One place that does get a lot of repeat business is Coles and they're changing things up a little bit. They are. They've been trying different things of course to get their sales back up to where they were some years back. Changing their merchandise mix, changing what they're emphasizing, changing what you see when you walk in the door and the latest thing is dresses and I can't help you too much there. But maybe they're hoping to get more women and young women to notice that they have dresses in their inventory and there's sort of a different mix of brands. Well even if you're not shopping for dresses I'll tell you as a woman you generally will stop to see what's there and I think most coal shoppers are women. Yes, absolutely. Yeah, I remember when I was covering that company when you talked to the executives about their consumers they always said she so they know. Yeah, they know. I've been there. All right. Let's talk about something kind of exciting and that's a major development that's happening right near the Marcus Performing Arts Center. Right and with sort of an unassuming name at least as far as the developer it's called Neutral which is a company in Madison. They're already building one residential tower next to the PAC on a spot that used to be a flower warehouse and it's right on the Milwaukee River so that's going to be about 30 stories. Again, construction is underway. I walked by there going to and from the Republican convention a week or so ago. For many years there's been discussion about the parking structure that's attached to the PAC. You go over the bridge to go from the parking structure into the PAC and in terms of developing that into something more than a parking structure it's a prime spot right on Water Street and so the city of Milwaukee ran a request for proposals process and received three proposals. We know one was from Gachman development of Milwaukee and they were not pleased about the process. The city started out by awarding the proposal that was submitted by Neutral and they want to put a high-rise there. Might be the tallest building downtown or certainly one of the tallest and be a combination of office, retail, residential and the rendering that I saw that was released shows a couple of buildings on the structure so I'm not sure of all the details but I believe they have one year to prove that they can do this and make it happen. It may not be a done deal but that's the plan at this point. Let me ask you this do we still have a lot of empty office space in Milwaukee? Yes absolutely. That's sort of the surprise about this or any new office or any new high-rise that's going up is if it includes office you got to wonder where the tenants are coming from because there are so many buildings the main one right now is the 100 East building that the Johnny Vasallo Johnny V and his comrades are converting to apartments and there have been a number of buildings like that. The old M&I bank headquarters is vacant and could have a mix of apartments and offices so yes you do wonder where the tenants would come from partly because of all of the remote work that's going on. Well maybe they'll come from Racine because there's a real war going on between Racine County and Mount Pleasant and it's not so pleasant on that. Well we are calling it the Racine water wars because it's mimicking issues that were happening in Milwaukee in the 90s and the 2000s between Milwaukee County and Waukesha County which led to the big pipeline that was built from Waukesha to Lake Michigan but the situation in Mount Pleasant is that there's a residential subdivision where the infrastructure has gone in and they're ready to start building homes a developer named SR Mills of Kenosha is involved with that project and his company or an LLC that's related to his company filed a lawsuit against the city of Racine and Mayor Mason in Racine saying that they had an arrangement to get water piped to that from the Racine water works to the subdivision and now the city is essentially blocking that deal. So there was a court hearing this past Wednesday and a judge did rule in the favor of the developer and directed the Racine Common Council a committee of the council to consider this agreement they were sitting on it they weren't doing anything with it and then the full Common Council also has to consider it. He did not order them to extend the pipeline but he just said you've got to look at this thing. Lots of news this week, Rich Kirch and from the Milwaukee Business Journal it's always great to have you here. Great to be here Libby. It's 827 we have 74 degrees looks like it's going to be a hot and humid day and we've got a chance of some showers and storms later on today, currently 74 degrees at WTMJ. And welcome back to the second half hour Wisconsin weekend morning news. I'm Libby Collins. I was just saying to Tiff a little while ago, what a week this has been. I mean when you think last Sunday we thought President Biden was going to be running for President again but no it was a shocking move and Kamala rallies right here in West Dallas. It was running hog wild through Milwaukee and so much more. It's the weekend review brought to you by Outdoor Living Unlimited. What we do here is go back. We are not going back. Alrighty then. Psych. A stunning turn of events in the race for the White House. President Joe Biden has announced he is dropping out of his bid to seek re-election. My fellow American has been the privilege of my life to serve this nation over 50 years. I think it's going to take a little while for us to get a sense of how this is saddling in with voters. Biden supporter Tom Maloney says he's not concerned with the timing. I mean there was so much potential against his opponent and I don't think he was able to take advantage of it. Vice President Kamala Harris due to make her fifth visit to our state this year today. This will be Vice President Harris's first appearance in Wisconsin since she became the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party. I see supporters of hers continue to trickle in at the sour, filling the bleachers and basketball court at West Dallas Central High School. Folks, we have a green county. We have a brown county. We do not have an orange county in Wisconsin. On the Tony Evers excitement scale that goes from Holy Mackerel and Max has out had heck yes. I am jazzed as hell. Peace unhinged. Afternoon Wisconsin. Today I ask you, are you ready to get to work? Following breaking news from Milwaukee, the 17 year old girl killed early this morning, nine other youth injured during a shooting at what's being called a car party. Two homes were also hit by gunfire. To have something like this happen is devastating. Smoke visible around 1230 this afternoon just south of Whitman Regional Airport. Cast a figurative and literal cloud over the start of EA Air Venture Oshkosh. We look down to the south and saw the smoke coming up over the trees. This is what it sounded like as visitors to Yellowstone ran away from the explosion and then falling debris. A geyser in the area known as Biscuit Basin, exploding boulders, rocks falling all over us. Jordan Love is scheduled to make $11 million this season. A new contract would lift that figure likely into the neighborhood of $50 million. As of now until until we get that resolved, you know, he will not be practicing. He made the right decision. I know he's got the support of the locker room. The assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump on July 13th is the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades. Kimberly Cheetles resignation comes amid calls from Democrats and Republicans for her ouster. They have to pick up the pieces. Israel's Prime Minister will give a record setting forth a dress to a joint session of Congress Wednesday. About 5,000 people turned out today, but flag there on the ground was on the flagpole here at Union Station a few moments ago. The protesters here landed on fire as well as that effigy of Benjamin Netanyahu. They might as well hold up signs saying chickens for KFC high school seniors will start receiving college offers next week under the new direct admit Wisconsin program as it pertains to the University of Wisconsin in Madison. I am still on the waiting list. Any minute now. Hartley's annual party is here. Hartley Davidson kicking off its four day long homecoming festival in downtown Milwaukee today. The evening of owner Holly is just one of the most biggest thing that she can never get rid of in your life. I speak trains around France have been hit by several coordinated malicious acts, fires disrupting traffic on the day of the opening ceremony of the Paris Games. You haven't seen your favorite Olympic sport yet because it's making its debut this year in Paris next Thursday. That is the event called it's called breaking, but you all know it as breakdancing. 41 southbound. Oh yeah, David Lausica going to take you out on the road. What a week. Jazz as hell. Chickens for KFC. Oh, I'm sorry. Hoofy. Ladies and gentlemen, the weekend. And the weekend review is sponsored by outdoor living unlimited. It's eight thirty nine. We're up to seventy five degrees and coming up. You've got Eric Bellstead and that every day hero it's all ahead on Wisconsin weekend morning news. Gonna be a sticky day hot humid up to about eighty and tons of storms a little bit later on. Nothing too severe though. That's a good news. Right now. Seventy five degrees at WTMJ at eight forty two and it's time to celebrate another everyday hero. It's Eric Bellstead from Wisconsin's morning news. Wisconsin's morning news defines an everyday hero as an average John or Jane Doe who had no idea when they got up one morning that they'd be saving a life. Today we head to Middletown, Connecticut. Young man named Drew Hayes was headed to the store Sunday night with his girlfriend when he drove past a duplex that was on fire. Better call 911. So his girlfriend calls police and the fire department while he gets out of the car and runs up to the house. I said like is there anybody in there and a lady pull her hands out the window. So up in the second floor, the upper unit there, Drew sees a woman wave at him. The fire is taking over the fire escape stairs on the side of the duplex so they can't get out there. He tells News 8 WTM8s that he's going to help her jump and that he would catch her but instead of her getting out of the window to jump, she starts showing her kids. I was like drop the kid, I'm going to catch him, I'm going to catch him and she didn't trust me at first but eventually she dropped her kid and I called him and I told him to go back there and go back there and then the other kid fell and I called him. So Drew catches both children then he and another witness helped catch the mother and a father who were inside, all four get out and are doing okay. I shudder to think what would happen to those folks prior to arrival if Drew didn't get them out. That's fire chief James Trasky there. Drew just 23 years old and everyday hero he says he knew he had to help them. My whole life always wanted to be a firefighter and I was like this is my chance to like help somebody. Boy Drew you're a firefighter in my book thank you Drew for being an everyday hero and saving a family of four. Everyday hero sponsored by Azura Memory Care and assisted living transforming the culture of care. Eric Bilst at WTMJ. Well Eric what an amazing story I hope that guy really gets on one of the fire departments because he certainly deserves it. Sounds like he'd be a great guy working for him too. It's eight forty four and you are a minute away from Mark court and sports right here on Wisconsin weekend morning news. Time for a WTMJ sports update from the Gruber Law Offices one call that's all sports desk. The Brewers just could not bring it home last night and fell once again to the Marlins with a seven to three loss. They look to avoid the sweep today with our coverage starting at noon with Brewers warm up with Dominic Catronio. The Packers are feeling the love four years 220 million dollars as the contract extension for Jordan Love following his first season as a starter in Green Bay. According to Adam Schefter Love will also receive a record seventy five million dollar signing bonus and a hundred fifty five million in new full guarantees. Love and the Packers begin the regular season Friday September 6th in Brazil against the Philadelphia Eagles. Greg Mancic WTMJ News. I mean just sign a contract seventy five million dollars. I'd signed two contracts for seventy five million dollars. Wish I had played football when I was a kid. Art it is eight forty six and speaking of sports. We've got Matt Miller joining us in just a couple minutes you know if you've been wondering okay where do I see synchronized swimming? Where do I see women's skateboarding? Oh wait juggling. Oh wait no that's not an Olympic sport is it? Well maybe it should be. All right he's going to tell you the best place to find all of it all of your favorite sports it's all coming up. Oh it's kind of a weekend morning news WTMJ W277 CV and WKTI HD 2 mil walk from the annex wealth management studios this is news radio WTMJ a good karma brand station. We've had some pretty nice weather the last couple days but you can just sort of feel this today we're starting to get more humid well it's going to be our week warm and humid now today we've got some chance of some showers doesn't look like they're going to be real strong but yeah they're going to be there with a high of eighty degrees then tonight rain and storms are going to end mostly cloudy we're going to get down to about seventy to degrees tomorrow looks partly sunny scattered showers and storms those might be a little bit stronger warm and humid up to eighty five degrees Tuesday more the same sunny hot humid pop up storms eighty seven Wednesday eighty seven is going to be our highest well under partly sky cloudy skies hot and humid and yep when you get that humidity you do have a chance of some showers and storms right now in Richfield it's seventy degrees Franklin's it's seventy two she boy can have seventy two and we have seventy five degrees at WTMJ at eight fifty it's time to check in with Matt Miller he of course is that media critic and pop culture editor at on Milwaukee dot com and speaking of pop culture it doesn't get any bigger than the return of Deadpool and Wolverine yes and many other people who I won't spoil right now wait wait wait wait wait wait no no no no because there are rumors Taylor Swift is in this I will confirm or deny nothing I'm going to try my best to not spoil as much as possible for for this movie because I want people to enjoy it and especially because I didn't enjoy it that much so I want what people to enjoy it say it isn't so what do you mean you didn't enjoy Deadpool and Wolverine I had a problem with it it's trying to be this tribute to the 20th century Fox era of that kind of era of superheroes but it's all being done by the company that eight 20th century Fox and destroyed it so it's kind of this weird corporate self-satisfied victory lap which is uncut which is weird to watch it's still got some fun jokes in it but I found it really redundant and I found a lot of the cameos desperate honestly like it feels like we have run out of things to be nostalgic for and this movie really hinges on you being excited to see these cameos that in a lot of cases are for movies that a are bad and you don't like or be that never existed they want you to be nostalgic for concepts not even movie I'm gonna try to pull it out of you who's the biggest cameo I'm not gonna think really it's still a thing weekend talk to me maybe next weekend I will be a little bit more flexible but there is a big cameo in the movie with a guy playing a character that he never played that he never actually played in any movies whatsoever it was only a reference that makes sense to people who've been following like Marvel movie news and like variety articles and I just don't find that as funny or as exciting or as movie okay it's from what you're saying it's a big inside joke the whole movie is a big inside joke across the board and you know that's not the worst thing in the world and again I laughed at some of the jokes and then I'm not gonna pretend like I was sitting there stone-faced the entire time I laughed at a few of the jokes but a lot of it just kind of feel self-statified and mug and then you add in the fact that it's trying to have this kind of sincere emotional storyline that really doesn't hit even by the standards of Deadpool movies where the kind of like emotional core of them has always been kind of a little weird to kind of wedge into a movie where you're like breaking the fourth wall you really don't care about it like it's cartoon but then they brought you to care this one kind of half hearts that massively I will say Hugh Jackman showing up for the work if people were concerned that he was just coming in for a paycheck after Logan he is one of the best performances in the movie I think Emma Corrin as the villain of the movie is also kind of a star I wish the movie let that character be the real villain instead of kind of having two villains in the movie yeah I wanted to have more fun and if you want if you're asking to have more fun in a Deadpool movie the Deadpool movie kind of thing I'm kind of depressed after hearing about this it makes me want to try I am going to be I am very confident I will be in the minority I think a lot of people especially this opening weekend were hardcore Marvel fans and hardcore dead tool fans a lot of those people are going to come out and they're going to say that was great Matt stupid Matt doesn't know what he's talking about which you know what in fairness I am stupid and maybe I don't know what I'm talking about all right well there's a part at the end of the movie where Deadpool says to the camera don't worry we're wrapping this up and I just don't feel like it's a good sign when your movie has to tell the audience don't worry we're leaving food all right so if you don't want to get depressed by going to the movies you can stay home and watch the Olympics and a lot of people are doing that but they're confused in this day and age of all the digital channels and everything of where we can see all of the events we want to see yeah and there's also the time difference because obviously these are taking place in Paris which is seven hours ahead so if you're kind of waiting in that traditional way that we all used to where you watch the Olympics at like night on NBC I'm not sure if that's the best way to watch the Olympics this year because that's going to be a lot on tape delay a lot of that stuff will probably already be out there in the news and out in social media and a lot of the results will already be out there a lot of the live stuff will be in the afternoons and morning as opposed to nighttime and I also think NBC is pivoting their kind of normal night coverage to more kind of stories and entertainment based they are really leaning hard on how Snoop Dogg is going to be involved this year and that they're doing this prime time in Paris kind of coverage and I think you're a person who just wants to watch the game that might be frustrating when I think Olympics I think a Snoop Dogg you was he was a little great when he was having heart we're doing the commentary last Olympics but if you're a person who wants to just watch the games themselves if that is what you're excited about I really think you're going to want to get peacock because that streaming service has all of the events literally all of the events live all of them they are streaming every single Olympic event on peacock this year whether it's at two o'clock in the morning or whether it's later in the afternoon they're all going to be on peacock so if you want to watch the events live if you don't want to get spoiled of what happens and gymnastics are with the basketball team peacock is your best bet there's also going to be coverage on USA network on golf network wonder what game they'll be broadcasting a network as well so a lot of places to find games but I really think if you want to watch the sports the athletics peacock is going to be your best option what are you most looking forward to weirdly the diving I love the synchronized diving because it has that it seems so silly and so like easy but also like you start watching it and you're like oh they over rotated I want to look like four where you like become an expert after two minutes of watching I yeah I don't do they call it synchronized swimming I love that I love that that's what I'm really looking forward to so yeah there's the thing is you kind of forget how awesome these sports are until you re because you haven't watched them in four years in a lot of cases so I'm really excited to watch swimming again and be like oh my gosh Australia I hate those guys you know it's going to be kind it's going to be fun to get back into that kind of thing oh well we look forward to it I know we'll talk more about it next week Matt Miller from on real waggy.com it's always a lot of fun to have you here no thanks for having me and I hope people enjoyed that pool in Wolverine I swear I'm not trying to poo poo on people parade I just had less fun than most Matt always cracks me up all right it is 75 degrees 857 coming up here after the news and I find this man so fascinating Roger Kaplanger you probably remember his story he was the medical director for the Milwaukee Brewers who back in 2017 was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer which normally is prognosis is not good but he survived over six years and there's going to be an event happening at M fan field next weekend we're going to tell you about that the largest gathering of pancreatic cancer survivors ever right here in Milwaukee also coming up in the next half hour I have the chances past week to talk with well she's an interesting lady Marianne Williamson you know I mean you might want to be dismissive of her but she is interesting and she has some very strong words about jumping into just an automatic nomination of Kamala Harris for president and we'll share that with you it's all coming up on Wisconsin weekend morning news this is Wisconsin's weekend morning news with Liddy Collins and welcome back to hour two and a little bit later on this half hour we're going to be doing my conversation with Marianne Williamson lover her haters she's an interesting lady and very outspoken if you just mention the Olympics what's your favorite Olympic sport over the summer Olympics I watch swimming and I'm a gymnastics girl I love our women's gymnastics team they are the best at what they do and to watch these amazing ladies take the stage with that kind of confidence I live for that hide Simone do Simone did okay she wobble a little bit but according to her coaches did fine now the metal rounds won't happen until Tuesday oh so we don't know not yet okay little early I'm kind of looking forward to trampolining don't laugh I think that's I think that's really cool I mean they they jump up and then they flip and then they do that I mean sort of sort of like a combination of gymnastics and pogo and if you actually watch those springs are very strong yeah they've been showing a lot of behind the scenes of how they test all the gear for the Olympics and those springs are not meant to have a lot of pushback on them so that's how it allows those those gymnast to really fly in the air it's kind of amazing wow wow you know it makes me think about all of the training that goes into somebody being a professional athlete and the other day I had the opportunity to talk with somebody who was the medical director for the Milwaukee Brewers and there's a very special event going on this week joining us is former Milwaukee Brewers medical director Roger Kaplanker and Roger you've got an event coming up on Saturday August 3rd as part of the Cine Maguet's foundations fundraising tell us about that yeah exciting time here in Milwaukee and in conjunction with the Cine Maguet's Foundation we're having an actual weekend now of pancreatic cancer awareness education you know Roger Maguet's started this foundation after his mother seen it passed away has dedicated his life others surrounding him as well as myself and Jackie and our family and the Milwaukee Brewers have been unbelievably gracious you know from Mr. Antanasio to Rick Schlesinger to Marty Ronsky to all the people and my teammates at the Brewers have given me this platform to help build awareness and so on Friday the first Dr. Evans is having a medical symposium at the medical college of Wisconsin with the far most leading experts in pancreatic cancer Friday night we're going to the Milwaukee art museum to have a get together a kind of meet and greet experience the art museum which is a wonderful place to view our city and then Saturday we're having more patients and survivors round table discussions with our physicians we're touring the medical college of Wisconsin labs where magic happens we have one of the biggest tumor banks in the country you know we're having brunch with some of the physicians there that patients can talk to both patients that are in treatment and patients like me that are out of treatment and then we're having the dinner on the diamond is our finale we're eating dinner on the field the Brewers have been very gracious of allowing us to do that and we're going to recognize you know Dr. Evans Dr. Von Hough some pancreatic cancer patients as well as raise money for research and the hundred percent of the proceeds from that all those activities are going back to the medical college of Wisconsin and the LeBron pancreatic cancer program and this is the largest gathering ever of pancreatic patients and survivors yeah this ever taken place well last year we took a picture of all the survivors and there was 80 of us in one room the most ever and this year we're shooting for 120 and that's because the survival rates of pancreatic cancer especially here at the medical college of Wisconsin are increasing those survival rates are almost triple the national average and it's giving people hope absolutely and if anybody wants to get more information where can they go yeah they can go to the scene of maguets foundation org it's all on the website the maguets foundation has been aggressively promoting this thanks to you guys Libby and WTMJ for having us on and promoting pancreatic cancer in the state of Wisconsin we have a high incident rate of that and so we're trying to make people aware that they're not alone right and I think the nomenclature of the event is the power of us right we have power collectively and we're going to have more with roger cablinger this well this morning at 11 o'clock on WTMJ conversations a fascinating story about his battle against this disease and you know I mean right now I think the survival rate is 9% when my husband died from pancreatic cancer it was only 2% so there is there are real real forward research going on with the disease and it is I get emotional talking about it because usually when somebody gets that diagnosis it is not a great prognosis and it's changing and it's because of people like roger cablinger and also the amazing the amazing researchers at the medical the medical college of wisconsin all right coming up in just a couple minutes we've got sports with marcourt right here on wisconsin weekend morning news time for a WTMJ sports update from the Gruber law offices one call that's all sports desk the brewers just could not bring it home last night and fell once again to the Marlins with a 7 to 3 loss and they look to avoid the sweep today against the Marlins with our coverage starting at noon with brewers warm up with Dominic cotronio in other wisconsin sports news the Packers are feeling the love here's Greg mazzock love and the Packers agreed to a four-year 220 million dollar contract according to ESPN's Adam Schefter making him the highest paid quarterback in NFL history love also gets a record $75 million signing bonus plus $155 million in new full guarantees love was due to make 11 million this season Greg mazzock WTMJ news I'm Isaac mark or WTMJ sports thanks a lot Isaac little trouble getting through that one huh that one's not going in the audio reel no it's good good for you a nice job and you're going to the Brewers game is it tonight or tomorrow I'm going to the one tomorrow okay and and and what happens when you go to Brewers games usually they win sometimes someone has a heart attack what the first Brewers game I ever went to the someone in the staff of the other team had a heart attack during the game it's all I remember about my first Brewers game every other time they've won that's that's not a good sign not a good sign but hopefully the wind tomorrow night and I hope they went tonight all right thanks a lot Isaac it's 9 16 coming up in just a couple minutes that conversation I had with Mary Ann Williamson earlier this week after it was announced that it's pretty sure thing Vice President Harris is going to get that nomination it's all I had on Wisconsin weekend morning news it is going to be hot and humid to clouds a spotty showers throughout the area right now and chance for some showers maybe even some thunderstorms later on today 80 is going to be our high then tonight those storms are going to end it's going to be mostly cloudy down to 70 degrees tomorrow looks partly sunny scattered showers and storms keep an eye on some of them and it's going to be warm and humid with a high of 85 on Tuesday looks like we've got more of the same sunshine hot humidity pop up storms and getting up to about 87 and at the risk of being repetitive Wednesday looks the same cloudy hot humid maybe some storms and a high of 87 could get out maybe do some swimming or some boating and if you are at Elkhart Lake right now it's 74 degrees mosquito that Lake 73 Lake Geneva has 71 and right now in Milwaukee it is 74 it is 74 degrees at 9 20 between the attempted assassination of President Trump and President Biden's decision to not run for reelection the political landscape has drastically changed in the last couple of weeks and joining us on our Tri County contracting hotline is Democratic candidate for President Marianne Williamson and Marianne first of all what was your reaction when President Biden announced that he was not going to run for reelection well I had been calling for the president to stand aside since the day after the debate I felt it was extremely important I felt there was real failure at crisis management that it took as long as it did to persuade the president but my reaction was a human one I feel compassion I feel respect I feel gratitude this had to have been a very humiliating experience what happened the night of that debate so I had the reaction that I think was first and foremost just compassion for the man but at the same time gratitude that that phase of things is over and we can move on as a candidate you must have felt now we have a chance to have a real open debate and convention in terms of trying to find who is going to follow in his footsteps but we have found that very quickly members of the Democratic Party are standing behind Kamala Harris well they're doing now exactly what they did for the last year and a half and I had a front row seat to all that there was a very early decision made that it would be Joe it's got to be Joe can't be anyone else got to be Joe and the Democratic Party paid a price for that and I think the Democratic process paid a price for that I found it disturbing that they're doing the same thing now everybody told a line now everybody just do what we're saying we have decided it's Kamala I don't think that's healthy I don't think it's healthy part democracy and I don't think it's a strategic way to win in November we've got to trust democracy here we've got to make this exciting it's boring you know people say well if we open up the convention it might be messy my contention is that if we don't open up the convention it will be boring you know the Republican got a very highly energized convention and we need one too and you don't get high level energy from people who are simply doing what it was decided would be done look I'm not naive no one is unaware of the way the forces of power work in this country she inherited 96 million dollars last night as part of the war chest that was for the Biden-Harris campaign she's raised tens of millions since then we have more than not since a bunch of volunteers trying to look up the contact info for delegates because the DNC will not release that list to us so I understand the institutional forces that are right against opening this to a larger democratic process but I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees and those half a million people who voted for me in the primary despite the fact that I was erased they have a voice too we will not win if our only message is Trump is bad they're working very quickly they're working those machines they've already got almost 2000 delegates she's they want to wrap this up quickly but I'm appealing to delegates who say wait a minute I won't be railroaded into this I want to think about that a delegate to the democratic national convention has a almost sacred responsibility at this point you kept referring to them as they who are they who are the people making the decisions that it has to be Kamala Harris what is this interesting because what happens is the president won the delegates that were necessary to nominate him those delegates tend to be democratic party operatives sometimes they are actually elected officials some of them are clearly nothing more than friends and family they're all part of that larger universe if all we win are the vote blue no matter who people we will not win in November we have to appeal to independence we have to appeal to progressives we have to appeal to those who don't even see any point voting because for them things never change and for that we absolutely must go beyond this clubish let's all toe the line let's also render any free thinking here and just do what's already been decided an ointment of Kamala Harris why is it the powers that be from the very beginning of this whole primary season seem to want to be dismissive of you of Robert F Kennedy jr and anybody else who even expressed an interest in running against Joe Biden and now Kamala Harris it's terrible actually so when i was a young woman the role of the political party was to stand in the background the voters decided who the nominee would be and then they brought money and infrastructure support in order to help that nominee things have changed over the last a few years to the point where they feel they have the right we saw it with what happened with Bernie and now it's gotten to the point where they don't even pretend anymore so they said early you know the DNC that they saw their mission as supporting the president in his renomination efforts they character assassinate they erased they invisibilize it's not pretty it's not good i feel at this point the soul of the democratic party is not the same as the machine of the democratic party you know what i find interesting is when Kamala ran in 2020 i think she only got like two percent of the votes in the states in which she ran which is what you were getting in this most recent primary why is it they're standing behind her and not you you know it's so interesting that you said that i was on Fox and when he said to me Marianne just you haven't broken through and i pointed out that i've been blacklisted on CNN and MSNBC and you know which are mainstream platforms which the average democratic voters doesn't see you on either of those two channels they don't even know you exist but more than that i wish that i said to him what you just pointed out i wish i pointed out she never broke through either she left the 2020 before i did and she had gobs of money she was listed up she never broke through she was listed up because they thought that she was the best choice for the vice president's thing and listen and i want to say something else here she might be the best one to defeat Donald Trump but i'm just saying then prove it let's have a open conversation let's have the base let the delegates hear nothing could be more important than that we choose the right person and this idea of just rubber stamping a candidate everybody just falling in line and indoors for the day i think that's something creepy about it and there's something this is not what democracy should be it should be messy because if we don't allow it to be messy then that convention is going to be boring and we'll pay an even bigger prize for a boring convention than we would for a messy one as we're looking at what's going to happen in Chicago what is your prediction what is that convention going to be like well if i can get these 300 signatures any delegates or friends of delegates who might be listening now you can write to us at convention at maryann2024.com if i am able to get there if i'm able to speak if even if she would debate me it'll be rocket and rolling and fun and exciting and i promise you we're not going to use platitudes like let's just finish a job we're going to talk about the one in four american to live with medical debt we're going to talk about the hungry we're going to talk about the poor we're going to talk about waging peace we're going to talk about israel and palace time we're going to talk about the floods and the fires and the hurricanes and how we're going to answer the climate emergency we're going to talk about this man for the drug war we're going to speak to the needs of the american people and the people of the world to the extent to which our policies affect them we're going to speak to the deeper meaning of american democracy and our history and what we owe our ancestors and what we owe our descendants that's the time there and if i'm not there it'll be same old same old and i don't believe that same old same old status quo is going to beat Donald trump if by any chance you would end up as the nominee for the democratic party could you win could you beat donald trump in november oh yeah absolutely i could because he tells him big lives and i tell him big truth maryan williamson pleasure to talk with you thank you thank you so much for having me she is a fascinating lady lover hater whatever she is very very interesting and certainly outspoken it's nine twenty nine on w t m j oh welcome back it's the final half hour of wisconsin weekend morning news i'm willie colons and it's nine thirty seven well mil walkie has been on the national stage with the rnc and we need to keep it going because the fister hotel blue and the bar at st kate the arts hotel are among the nominees for usa today's ten best awards what does that all mean well joining us on our tricani contracting hotline is briana grir she's a chef colcierge at the fister and briana what an exciting time it must have been for you during the rnc it was thank you so very much you know we always have such wonderful things happen at the fister because we are the center of milwaukee but to have the rnc here with a true honor and one more thing as i understand former president trump selected the fister as his home away from home during that event and if anybody knows hotels he does so that had to be quite a compliment all i can say is that i did hear trump say he stayed at a very nice hotel so briana grir she is the chef colcierge at the fister hotel i love the french talk i don't know if you love to say it all the time you'll come here how do you become a colcierge oh that's a great question well i i've lived many lives and so i am a sconesome girl but i actually was in new york city for 21 years and so i was very very fortunate and honored to be mentored and guided into the hotel world and so i started as a concierge in new york city and how does the fister compare with some of those new york hotels you know what i have to say it still has the excitement and the bustle of what new york city offers but i have to say our hospitality and warmth is definitely 10 times more than any hotel outside of wisconsin and you know the fister it just has a family feel and milwaukee itself i i tell my friends back in york city that milwaukee is such a gem because it offers everything and anything that you want but it also has this beautiful ease to it you know and you still get the friends and family feel all right let's talk about the usa today 10 best awards i this isn't new to you because the fister has been nominated for best historic hotels and resorts in the past that is correct yes we were truly honored last year to be number six top historic hotel in the usa today's top 10 best rewards tell us a little bit about why the fister is so special you know as i mentioned before we are the epitome hotel the center historic hotel for milwaukee you know we have such history 131 years our hotel has been the choice for presidents and performers hall of famers we're the hotel to go to for any red carpet event gallows and such so for us it does make sense that the hotel would be in you know the pile of these amazing historic hotels all over the world you know it is a true honor and a testament to the team you know it definitely is we have a wonderful group of team members well and the best hotel bar i'm not surprised that blue is on the list i'm going to tell you a little story brianne during the rnc i was getting my media credentials and well i have a minor friendship with one of the girls who was doing that and she said libi i'm not a beer drinker everybody's talking beer i want to know where to go for a nice cocktail and i told her about blue at the fister she she went there with a group of other people and she told me the following day she said of all the things she did while she was in milwaukee going to blue was her favorite i'm glad to hear that too because it is truly an amazing experience i think that's the word you can say about blue you know where it's located situated on the 23rd floor it overlooks the sky panoramic views of the downtown and lake michigan so for me it is such a special special spot and i have to say we have the best bar members and i have to say the live music we're so fortunate because we get some amazing amazing talented people there and it's just such a nice vibe i mean you don't feel rushed you feel completely relaxed when you're there it is true it is true yes i mean it has one of those i think you've stepped away right from the hustle and bustle of kind of being outdoors in the milwaukee city you know if you're coming to the hotel and you're here from business and it's been a long day you can kind of just go up there and escape and just have a wonderful evening relaxing to what blue offers and the other thing is the bar at saint kate the arts hotel is also nominated for this and again it's a little different vibe because it's off the lobby but it's still great bartenders and you know those barbites and everything that i love music and if you get a little tired of sitting sitting down you can go and look at some of the galleries which makes it so special it is true i mean clearly the market group knows what they're doing right i think so it's been nominated three times at our saint kate hotel bar blue itself and then of course the sister hotel but with saint kate you know we're so fortunate to really have our sister property be completely different from the sister hotel because it offers another side another opportunity for guests to really explore the city so whether you have your historic hotel lovers or if you're more of a modern contemporary boutique that's what saint kate offers and that bar it is the center you know so many people come to us and they always say even the locals you know the saint kate bar is the place to be you know you can have the restaurant on the second floor aria and then we also offer the googly champagne bar room which is amazing and then of course again another opportunity for live music all right so tell us about the usa today poll because you've got to feel a little divided because you're competing against a sister hotel with the bar at saint kate but what can we do as you know fans right here in southeastern wisconsin what can we do to help you along to make sure you're on the top ten of that list thank you we appreciate that really we do because you know the sister i think has been there for so many families and so many generations and so please you know for our readers just vote it is so simple to do you know i'm one of those where i'm like oh floating it's going to take forever or you're going to have to sign up or you're going to have to put a card down but no i promise you it's two seconds of literally just the click and that is it and you can even do it from other emails so the more opportunities the more will help us to get on that ten best so if you just go to the ten best hotels you'll say today's ten best awards and there is the website right there and it'll just literally state it right there and you'll click on it right there and we will have that posted here on our website at wtmj.com for the wisconsin weekend morning news show and you can come to our website if you didn't get that and you could click on to it to vote and i got to tell you briana anytime i've been either at blue or at the bar at st kate i have had a fabulous relaxing time thank you so much it's so wonderful to hear that i mean honestly we all pride ourselves in making sure the guests have a member all the time and that you experience exactly what we feel working here so that means a lot thank you for that friana grier thanks for joining us today thank you so much what an honor i appreciate you taking the time to speak with me it's 75 degrees at 944 and you are just a couple minutes away from sports on wtmj time for a wtmj sports update from the groover law offices one call that's all sports desk the brewers could not bring it home last night and once again fell to the marlins with a seven to three loss marlins are ranked as the worst team in the mlb right now so what does that say about us uh but the brewers look to avoid the sweep today our coverage of the game starts at noon with brewers warm up with domina katronio the packers are feeling the love four years 220 million dollars that's the contract extension for jordan love following his first season as a starter in green bay according to adam shefter love will also receive a record 75 million dollar signing bonus and 155 million in new full guarantees love and the packers begin the regular season friday september sixth in brazil against the philadelphia eagles gregmancick wtmj news i'm isek marcourt wtmj sports i'm surprised you didn't bite your tongue when you said that isek about the brewers no no no no everybody's entitled to having a bad day i've got faith okay i think we all do it's 948 coming up if you're planning a summer vacation special if you're doing it last minute you better watch out we'll tell you all about it on wisconsin weekend morning news wtmj w two seven seven cv and wkti hd2 milwach from the anax wealth management studios this is news radio wtmj a good calmer brand station summer's almost over a lot of people already took their vacations or they booked them way in advance but if you're one of those individuals who kind of waits for the last minute or you like to be spontaneous holliget are some of those vacations you find on social media joining us on our tri-county contracting hotline is michelle ryan and she is our consumer expert from dat cap and yep you're getting complaints on this already aren't you oh we sure are there's a new twist to this we've received reports that there's a new variant to what we think of as our traditional vacation scams that prey on people and this is that the scammers are trying to use an invite only group that appears reputable and legitimate and often supported by personal testimony but scammers are just convincing consumers to send money to a fake timeshare owner or business who wants to rent out their space and they often request payment through peer-to-peer payment apps like venmo cash app or zelly and then promise to send you more details before your trip but unfortunately those details never come and they cut up all communication once they've received your money so you're out of vacation and the money you would have spent on it now do legitimate businesses still solicit through social media yeah they do many legitimate timeshare companies offer rentals for unused properties and they don't use social media that often but they still do so we really encourage you to avoid social media because of the mix of scammers using that and just go to the property where you actually want to rent and visit a timeshare's website to verify the listing and use their third-party booking site if they are attached to one rather than just responding to those social media posts you can use that as your idea generator just don't use that as your follow-through for booking or for clicking on those links now what do you do if you think you've been involved in a travel or a vacation scam report the transaction to police immediately because it may actually be a theft and impersonation issue but then call consumer protection so we can give you additional guidance and you can reach us on the consumer protection hotline at 1-800-422-7128 so it's great to hear from Michelle Rynan from DatCap it's going to be mostly cloudy warm and humid today those little spotty showers kind of around but not so much but we are expecting some later on today we're going to we'll get up to about 80 degrees and tonight storms are going to end it'll be mostly cloudy in a low of 70 and then tomorrow partly sunny scattered showers and storms warm and humid with a high of 85 kind of the same for the rest of the week looks like we're going to stay in the upper 80s right now in mequan we have 75 degrees Racine is at 73 O'Connor Milwaukee is 73 and we have 75 degrees at WTMJ at 9 55 well in 2017 Roger Kaplanger medical director for the Milwaukee Brewers was given the devastating news that he had pancreatic cancer he told me what keeps him going through his treatments did continuing to work while you were going through chemo and radiation do you think that helped you mentally oh absolutely yeah I think you know I didn't want to go home and just have a pity party that's not me that is not me this happened for a reason this is what we're going to do if people who have cancer any form of cancer granted outcomes may be different but if your attitude is that you're going to crush this it psychologically does help did you ever give up you say to yourself oh I can't I can't do this never you can't tell yourself that life is way too precious what kept you going I think our family kept us going I think the will to survive to beat this kept it going I'm just not a quitter I can't I'm not quitting and the former medical director for the Milwaukee Brewers Roger Kaplanger is a six year survivor of pancreatic cancer we talk about his battle and his commitment to helping others through the cena megawitz foundation it's all this morning at 11 o'clock on WTMJ conversations and by the way they are hosting a dinner on the diamond which is the largest gathering the pancreatic cancer patients and survivors an American fan field on Saturday August 3rd from five until eight three eight thirty that dinner is going to be part of the 20 24 power of us weekend long symposium and conference organized by the cena megawitz foundation and held right here in Milwaukee and I think we've got a link if you go to the W if you go to WTMJ.com and go to the Wisconsin weekend morning news page and we've got a link if you want to find out more about that all right as I said we'll be back with Roger that's at 11 o'clock but right after the news it's going to be the academic mortgage and real estate show with Brian and David Wicert always a great conversation and boy with all the financial news we've been getting with the stock market and those interest rates they've got a lot to say about what the best time to buy a house is and how to get your best deal on it especially when it comes to getting those good mortgage rates so that's right after the news with tipua right here on WTMJ I'm Libby Collins.
