The Jordan Syatt Podcast

An Amazing Conversation with Gary Vaynerchuk

In this episode I speak with Gary Vaynerchuk about my 3-year tenure as his personal trainer, coaching him 7-days/week for 3-years straight. Some of the questions I asked him were: - What was your very first impression of me? Both during the interview as well as once we began coaching. - What’s the workout which you cussed me out the most? - If you could only teach your children 3 things (fitness/health related), what would they be? - If you lost everything and could no longer afford a full-time personal trainer/nutrition coach , would you still stick with your fitness?   - If there’s one thing you wish I learned from my time with you, what would you want it to be? - What is your favorite and least favorite exercise? - How do you think AI will impact the fitness industry? - And much more... I hope you enjoy this episode and, if you do, please leave a review wherever you're listening (huge thank you to everyone who has written one so far). Finally, if you've been thinking about joining The Inner Circle but haven't yet... we have hundreds of home and bodyweight workouts for you and you can get them all here: https://www.sfinnercircle.com/

my brother what's up bro we're recording just so you know I'm ready we're just jumping in live I don't have time to waste man it's very good to see you great to see you my friend listen for the people in my audience who who might not know you which I think is very few can you just give a little understanding of who you are yeah I am I mean I think at the end of day I'm an entrepreneur obviously entrepreneurs have become much more known in the last 15 years than when I was growing up my path to entrepreneurship was being born in the Soviet Union and coming to America when I was a kid growing up in Queens and Edison New Jersey predominantly in Edison New Jersey in the 80s lemonade stands you know shoveling snow very very very entrepreneurial kid very bad at school by the time I was in fourth grade I was good up to fourth grade I got A's and B's and first second and third and fell in love with baseball cards like many kids my age in the 80s and early 90s it was a big trend really learned a lot about business through doing baseball card shows and then my father lived his American dream through being a stock boy in a liquor store to eventually owning a liquor store and I started working there when I was 14 and that was a really life changing experience you know grew up in a son of an immigrant family merchant kind of life and was learned a lot more about interacting with customers and marketing and selling stuff and really became infatuated with wine and collecting of wine like I did with sports cards and then in 1997 launched one of the first e-commerce wine businesses in America and that really changed the trajectory of me and my family's life and from 1998 to 2011 I pretty much spent 90% of my time building my family's liquor store business rebranded it to Wine Library and and built that business in a big way and a large business and along the way really learned cutting-edge marketing you know had the website did email marketing before anyone did it but Google AdWords before anyone did it did YouTube long form videos before anybody did it I started them in February of 2006 for context and then was a pioneer in using social media as a brand building exercise for myself and as a marketing engine for my businesses along that way got smart finally in my early 30s and started investing in some of those companies so it was an early investor in Facebook and Twitter and Tumblr later added things like Coinbase and Snapchat and Uber to my repertoire and so got really known for investing and being ahead of the curve then my personal brand really took off in 2015 and started building with probably the white heat moment being around 2017 18 19 20 when I was doing something called daily V and podcasts and along the way in 2009 started a marketing company with my brother and then by 2011 started running it day-to-day and that's called VaynerMedia that is now part of a marketing holding company that I call Vayner X that has multiple companies in it and is now a you know 300 million dollar plus business with 2000 plus employees and one is one of the leading marketing companies in the world and then I also started a sports agency with my brother after he left about seven years into VaynerMedia called Vayner Sports that's growing quite a bit in UFC and baseball and football hopefully soon to be basketball and soccer and then and then started co-founded Rezi the restaurant app along the way which had a exit to AMX years ago and co-founded and ran a company called Empathy Wines with Nate Schroeder and John Trauman two guys you know and we sold out the consolation became a board member of charity water and pencils of promise to nonprofits that really speak to me and wrote seven New York Times best-selling books along the way and and plenty of other things that that was not enough of a mouthful now I think for anyone who's listening and who knows me and maybe they they know you or maybe they don't know they didn't know that much about you they're starting to realize where so much of my inspiration has come from because I coached you every day for three years straight from June 1 2016 to June 1 2019 every day wherever you were I was Hong Kong LA Nashville Amsterdam wherever wherever you were I was for three years it was it was a life-changing opportunity for me and I consider you a huge mentor isn't the right word to be honest it's more of like a family type like father figure for me and you change my life in many ways and so with that in mind knowing all that about you and that I coached you for three years every day I posted up that question box on my story yesterday that I saw you posted and shared thank you I want to go through a lot of the questions that people asked I really want to discuss because there are some really good ones and it was it surprised me you can answer them however you want if you want to answer them rapid fire just one word rapid fire you can do that if you want to answer them long-form you can you can join me before we go into that what surprised you the most about the questions so there were a lot of them about me they they wanted to know like your thoughts on me and there were also a lot about your journey with fitness cool that's awesome let's go so it's not there are some things about business and finance but mostly about your fitness journey and then our relationship together which I thought which I think is look I mean I do seven million pieces of content around business and yes that this I think will bring a lot of people value even in the crossover of the people that consume it that are predominantly my world and not aware of you so I'm excited about that go ahead okay so the first question is what was your very first impression and by the way I know I don't have to say this be fully honest like fully brutally honest I mean you know how I roll I know I know and it's so so very first impression of me both during the like the interview which was that first time I coached you for an hour I just flown in from Israel so the very first impression of me then and also once we began actually coaching what was like the very first impression okay let me try to break this down because so what was really interesting as you know Jordan was when you started with me that was after being with Mike every minute for two years right to right yeah - with Mike and so as you know because then we experienced it for three to your point I've used family - I've used a younger brother we've obviously both been very busy last three or four years but it's scaring to me like how much I smile even if like if people saw our first nanosecond of what just happened when I signed on yeah like we both had genuinely deep smiles yes so what was hard at first with you was I didn't want Mike to leave you know like I was so close with Mike it was two years and to your point again you're gonna understand this so much because then we had because then I didn't want Mike to come back right I didn't want Mike to leave when you started and then we were together every day for three years and I didn't want you to leave right right you know it was Mike who was coming back ironically right right which was way better than if it was Sally or Stevie or Johnny right so I think initially what the first thing was like this is gonna be different but I would you know obviously I knew that that time would have to come and like there's that plus I don't what you know Mike obviously then came back and then pretty quickly COVID happened and then pretty you know in a scheme of things and then obviously he moved to Minnesota so like even now even though I work out with Mike it's different to open the setup though I was traveling a lot and a lot would be an understatement and we were spending a lot of intimate time together and every day in person which is different than what I'm doing with Mike now which is predominantly digital so it was very intimate it was very close it's like a best friendship I mean I probably in that three-year window spent more time with you than any other human on earth mm-hmm go to my family think about that yeah so and DRock right because I'm sure yeah and so you know Mike so now I'm gonna be very vulnerable and honest because I want people to know you better too I think Mike the things that are bouncing my head Mike was very simple like Minnesota simple like it is today like one of the great things about Mike yeah like he's not he's not carrying a lot of complexity you know he's a human being he's got plenty of things he's worried about and things that nature but it was light with Mike he was light he was a young kid it was easy I remember very quickly realizing with you this is what's coming to mind I'm like oh Jordan's got like shit going on his head hmm like like and I'm sure you probably remember this like the more I'm now recollecting because it was fun about this interview is normally I can cruise control but I think you know like we got very close very fast because you know I by nature become a guidance counselor and a head coach and a therapist with everyone I get close with mm-hmm so like for everyone is listening like like if you if I get close to you we're not just like let's watch a movie right it's not like silly shit I get very deep yes and I got very deep with you pretty quickly into like important things that were going on in your life yeah like my dad we spoke about my dad all that stuff yeah dad your brother your mom it was all there fast like I almost remember even let's probably one of the first times in my life I remember thinking like oh man I need to like because I really want did you to travel with me all the time they're like you know I need to be very thoughtful like I you know this is a lot of stuff like I want Jordan to look forward to working out not like you know so I think couple things I think I remember that I remember very quickly that I thought you were more he might don't be mad at me but like I feel like you definitely came you know this was the first workout experience I've ever had in my life so all I ever knew was Mike right right and so now you come in and you're like don't do that I'm like whoa this is what do you mean and they're like did it did it and like I felt that you were very sharp which was very valuable to me at that time and then obviously beyond that Mike was worried about we were in different parts of the journey Mike came in and he had 30 I have weighed 30 pounds more and I had no muscle like I remember enjoying telling you like Jordan you don't even know two years ago I couldn't even pick up five pounds of this little like you know so I remember I remember really being excited that you started to focus on my flexibility and like that was a game changer now I I mean I bring that up to Mike and to myself and to my family often like your name gets thrown around in my life probably four to seven times just to give you flowers for QL or IT band or some issue or fascia it was a it was a phenomenal change in the course of my life it was profound and so I remember that I also remember you're gonna smile this one I also remember that I was excited that you didn't know yet that you couldn't trick me yes I I was in a place of I thought I could trick anybody and you were the first person in my life I was like oh no I can't and I remember being impressed with that because I understand that its gift of gab it's you know a personality trait it's a salesmanship and I'm glad you caught me where when you caught me because I was just in a point in my life where I was really trying to be a hundred percent and I wasn't even there yet I'm more there today than I was but I just remember I was excited to kind of like be that person for you that almost I wish I talk a lot of famously about my dad said word is bond and you know and he was that for me but he wasn't he was he scared me out of it mmm right my dad scared me out of like don't embellish don't bullshit don't lie but you know fear is effective but not sustainable do you know what I mean super well said like that helped me but it wasn't in the most healthy way like I knew that I could help you in a healthier way than I was helped and I thought that it would because I think you know back to the moment we just shared I think it's you know it's scary but then it becomes even safer I remember being excited about it because maybe even at first I was like Jordan and you're like you know like what I would do what anyone would do but then I think that actually advanced our relationship dramatically a hundred percent yeah you're I don't know if you're gonna remember this but there was a moment specifically that changed my life it's such an innocuous moment we were at the vacation house and your son he spilled a drink outside we were outside spilled a drink my gut response was my head whipped around waiting to see you the father berate him like it really angry that the drinks build and I just remember the drinks build your son didn't seem bothered by it and you were just like not a big deal we'll clean it up that moment was huge for me in terms as a human because I learned to become tricky because I needed to out of a fear that I was gonna get in trouble for the truth and so by the way you it was I was freely able to express the truth for the first time because I wasn't scared of repercussions I was I wasn't scared of being punished for the truth so that for me was a huge moment I'm so you know people could say like you're the best businessman or like I can't believe you have 10 million followers or you made a lot of money like hearing that like means the world to me mmm it's the truth and I and you're right I have no clue of what you're talking about by the way and usually but that's because you kept that moment to yourself and so I can't recall it but like that's huge for me and like and I so understand it I tell my father a lot actually that the reason that people lie to him even though he hates it the most is he creates the framework that people need to lie to him yep yep I believe in that it's you know I tell them all the time one strike you're out policy is not gonna lead to a lot of good behavior correct correct and that was that's what I grew up with and it created a habit of even for things that didn't matter I just wanted to get out of the situation and then it just becomes the way you roll right and I guess just to sum up because we have a lot to cover it was it was it was it went really well I got very comfortable with you very fast it was you know I love that you and Mike had a good relationship I remember excited about like I remember thinking like I wish I could see their texts exchanged with each other about the first month because there's like I'm such a unique guy you know I know that yes in the line like a real way good bad left right up down I'm definitely an original in a lot of ways yes and so I'm empathetic to that and and I just wanted to be as good of a partner to you as you were to me but from a tangible standpoint I just remembered how sharp you were like I was so impressed and I feel like I grew so much under your tutelage especially in the first six to twelve months thank you I appreciate and it's magnified on my end I'll quickly add one more thing just not topic I just think it's important I remember I came to you one time I was really upset because I knew for a fact that a colleague was lying to me I knew it and and I was asking you how do you deal with it when you know like employees are lying to whatever and she heard just like have you ever lied to someone and I was like yeah and he's like so you were like so how can you be so mad why are you so mad that someone's lying to you but when you lie it's okay and between that moment and the moment with your son and then also there was a moment where you're just like just say that just when you just say that it's the just saying the truth of it that really changed my life and it took such a weight off of my shoulders or weight off of my chest or weight off of my mind to just say it like it is and just say the truth because it really you carry around a lot of extra baggage when you're when you're holding it in so that was one of the biggest thing I look post you being you and I being together I would argue that I was able to give you a lot advice that I was on my own journey on during the time which is why it was so obvious for me right like I would say you know what you're talking about now is the power of candor mm-hmm and I can tell you that every difficult thing in my life personally mm-hmm professionally is my accountability to the contributions of those issues is 100% based on the inability to be candorous mm-hmm which then to your point leads to resentment mm-hmm and then it's game over yep yep and and by the way I think what it's ingrained as deeply as it is into people like you and I you know it's a forever game it's like alcoholism yes yes or that you I can tell you that I work on with Mona with my kids with with my parents with my employees it's still something I have to work on yeah always yeah makes total sense all right I think the thing that was different about you and I in both of us going through that journey was I was you also had the ability to become bad at yes yes that's a major difference in Mike and I as well I think yeah for sure whereas I am not as combative when I'm when I'm angry or resentful I'm I tend to not be as combative and and I think they're just different ways of emptying out that frustration yes though as you know like I can be combative if I needed to be pushing the corner yeah you absolutely can it just depends on the situation yeah all right do you remember which workout you cussed me out the most in what workout happened that made you the most angry the most whatever that you cussed me out the most I have one in my mind I don't know if you remember that's top you had you will remember quickly on the things that I most struggle with I can definitely tell you that the when I have to hold the weights and walk the cattle belt like the the farmers walks yeah is that where you're going or I know I have a different one okay the farmers walks as you remember that last 10 or 15 seconds I just really would get angry I'd be like please like you know it just would really get me yep the you know obviously the the one that's all Gary and split squats those those I still like honestly you just said that and I'm upset right now like still makes me do those anything the Bulgarian split squats were so hard yeah hard but the before you and I think you've heard this from Mike like anything what is this again the front big part of your foot the leg again your quad yeah quad quad burning yeah for the first two to five years of my regimen definitely with Mike and into you the chapter with you quad burning was oh when I would do the quad like sit against the wall thing with you like I was pumped to show you like I couldn't you know this every time I'm doing it right now every time I would do it in front of you I'd be like Jordan you have no idea how bad this was two years ago because I'm just unbelievable how bad my quad situation was I mean everything was fucked up yeah I really genuinely mean this I feel it again that's why I'm saying it out loud I wish you were there day one nothing me and Mike have explained can do it justice I wish DRock was there to get that on care I really wish that first workout was there was on camera I mean look at this brother actually I don't you're doing audio or you doing videos well we could do both I'd never really show this photo but I'll do it like like this is it like this is this is day one yeah yeah I remember that picture it's wild arms are flabby even forget about the gut and just the body composition changes now man it's it's insane it's and yes obviously performance and how you feel but like the body composition change and how you and in addition to how hard you work how like it's it's really wild how how far you come in a relatively short period of time as well yeah especially you know the key the thing that I always think about is a my body's not predisposition to be like overly muscular like I've right right that just don't you know like some people's bodies are structured certain ways same with mine yeah though you like yes but like I think you're more you're even a little more predisposed but that might be underestimating the work you put in so comma yes to I also really really really had zero muscles in my body so yeah yeah I have everything I have starts at 39 years old my base starts at 39 that's hard yes to get older like like I'm I'm gonna be 50 in a blink you know yeah and so and so you know I'm aware that like if I put in all this work at 20 to 30 instead of 39 to 49 yep like I'd have bigger results that be a real difference in terms of total muscle mass that you were able to add especially because by the time you started with Mike you weren't sleeping much you were working like crazy like it was it was a very different situation so yeah the the workout that comes to my mind that's there's one workout in particular that I know for a fact you you hated me for like a week we were on vacation at your parents' house and they have that big hill and oh my god and we did hill sprints bro that's a good call I hate that I'm so yeah by the pond yeah that was the worst your calves were right do you remember how you can do days you days those calves like you know like yeah bro that was hard but funny this morning I literally this is insane I can't believe this I don't do as you know walking is not really part of my reg yeah I literally literally I'm gonna pull it up right now that's so wild that you told this story because there's less than 25 workouts all time I literally texted Mike this morning at 808 West Coast time literally this this hill is killing me no way walk today multiple miles on a big hill because we're staying with bonus dad yeah California and I like literally today I'm like that's so funny yeah hill sprints and hill walking in general like it's no joke but I'll never forget you walk around the house you sprint up and then remember I had to come down and you're like dead the whole thing was the worst all right so I have a question for you based on everything you've learned fitness wise so and I'm framing it in a way that is gonna I'm trying to elicit a lot of emotion here to really have you think about what your advice would be if you could only teach your children three things about health and fitness yes what would they do I have great question number one right off the top fucking I'm so hyped to say this you can't outwork your mouth mmm yep it's the number one thing that is stuck that no matter how much you work out if you do not have good eating habits you will not achieve whatever I mean vanity for sure yep but even like you know obviously there's deeper level it's not just calories if you want to eat kind of like especially now being around Mona there's like the education I am around cleaning radiance versus yes even just basic calories like you cannot and it's really humbling when you think about it because you know you go on a treadmill you run for an hour sweat your ass off and you realize like one Snickers like wipes that so can he can't out eat your mouth I would say health and fitness I would say the second thing is vanities cool and all but like quality of life so this goes into like why I believe so much in stretching and soft tissue and all that yep yep a you know choose quality of life over vanity would be okay I like that so that gets into like why you then start really doing legs like you know it was so fun to get educated along the way you see your smile you know where I'm going like we go to a gym like oh wow like what I used to thought think was like big dudes like they would have like literally stick legs and you're like wait that's not the right that's the 1980s 90s mentality that like I think we've learned from so yeah I expect you know especially because as you know I struggled so much with my QL and my back and still I mean like I'm playing way too much basketball the so as is you know is hit your radar because me and Mike have done every time every time it goes like this is Mike Flowers for you anytime like it drags too long where things aren't working I'm like Mike we need to talk to Jordan by the way that's so as exercise you showed me looks showed Mike the other day looks insane I want to do it dude it's a for the QL for the QL yeah it's yeah that was amazing but he told me be careful because the first time you did it you hurt yourself I didn't do that when I did a different one and I did it I hurt my back when I did it for too long yeah yeah so that's number two what team number three um I've got one and this is very real to how I see the world and if my kids share my DNA they may have to really lean into this one because I do number three on health and wellness it doesn't matter if you were going well for six months and then you had a bad week it's not off or not just make tomorrow the next good day mm-hmm you know like I think you and Mike both shared this I think you both did that well like if there's gonna be a beans day like you know like it's it's okay like we didn't want that it's not what we set out to do today but like let's not go into a dark hole of depression yeah you do that right like oh I fucking blew it I you know I went so hard I mean I'm going through that a little bit this year to be honest or like last year I crushed I demonized carbs somehow and had a great year and easily covered under 175 all year and was yeah sort of 169 to 171 and as you know with my way through the years like that's a really nice number considering how much muscle I gained in the last seven yes yeah yeah that means you're very lean yeah it's my my new one my 170 is my old 157 of subtract you know what I mean cuz cuz Jordan if I'm really doing it the way I'm doing it you know it's one to three pounds of a muscle I'm gaining a year right roughly at this point it yeah at this point yeah prop yeah I mean I could say probably two to five but yeah probably around around that range yeah and I keep a conservative everyone notice what just happened everyone who's listening like I've learned from these guys like literally when I first got with them I would have said five to eight pounds right and yeah yeah now I even understood but again even if let's just based on my number in your number let's give me three yeah three pounds and I've done that over the last seven years it's 21 on the scale like so like I'm a you know I just for everyone's context I was at 186 the day I started with Mike and honestly I had a good day the day before cuz I didn't want it to be too bad and now I understand how the scale weight works I would say in that range when easily I was I've had days in that part of my life ten years ago where I was 192 191 190 you know like so and then I went all the way down to 157 and when you and I were working out I was probably in the 160 right to 165 165 to 170 early on it did start to go up because I mean we did we did some heavy training like you definitely put on muscle so you like early on like post immediate post mic yeah and then it got about 172 to 173 issues right so I mean and I see it in my body right like I can see like I know what I look like when you stopped ish and I know what I look like now and I'm hovering around the same way but I look much more muscular like 100 you look leaner now than you did then yeah I mean for sure so um there's the whole like putting the toe on the wall debacle with the scale you got to hear this I I somehow by accident figured out that if I put my toe against the wall like I literally went to weigh myself I weigh myself every day for these guys and you send us your weight you sent us a picture way I keep accountable and one day years ago I don't know how I didn't know this that you could change the way but it was just like not where my mind was and I literally my toe like hit it I just noticed it went down I was like wait a minute and I didn't do anything that day but what it did was this tells you the psyche of someone who it doesn't come natural to I realized this goes back to the lying thing and all that I was like oh I have an out and so I just ate loose for the next four or five six seven days and like you know all of a sudden like you know if you eat loose for seven days the scales not gonna be nice to you and I think it was longer than that because I remember dude I'll never forget this so there is there was a morning where you and I were working out and you were you were doing this thing really you're grabbing your stomach and you're like man I think I'm putting on too much weight and I was like well yeah I mean the scale like it looks pretty good and and and then I was like you got to tell you something and well and then like nothing was said and I'm on my way back to my apartment and then I get a text all that's right I remember now and you said a text message first you texted me and you're like there's a problem and then you texted me and Mike on a group that then he texted me Mike DRock and Tyler on different thread and you were basically like it's not okay I figured out a cheat code I've been putting my toe in the wall to be changing the weight and I'm on the phone with Mike I'm like are you reading this right now and he's losing it laughing and you've just been like lying about your weight this whole time and then we Mike and I are trying to figure out all right what do we do how do we fix this and then I'll never forget this oh right you're gonna travel with a scale dude you said pop-up scales you were like you said I'm gonna I want you to carry a scale with you everywhere you go and I want you to weigh me randomly throughout the day and I said I'm absolutely not doing that and you said I'll find someone who I was just so disheartened I didn't want to like you know look I mean I this is like seven or eight years later and like it is when something doesn't come nap this why I'm so empathetic to people when they don't have work ethic for work yeah I'm like I get it I don't have pepper this like for some people for many people that are listening they're especially your podcast they're gonna be on either side of this conversation they're exactly like me and like every day is a battle or they're or they're on the other side and fitness is their passions like the eat like as easy as it is for me to like work ten hours straight without going to the bathroom it's as easy for them to wake up every morning I mean this morning mm-hmm I wanted to go walk this hill like you wanted to get punched in the fucking face yeah do you think that if if you lost everything lost all your money lost lost everything in some crazy whatever and you couldn't no longer pay for Mike to coach you or pay to have a personal trainer at this point in your life would you still stick with fitness in some way or would you just completely give it up I would give up 96% of it you would it's devastating to be honest like this it's like so disheartening after 10 years and I say 96 and maybe it's 80 like I will say that it's I will say the reason it's not a hundred which would have been my answer seven or eight years ago yeah it or four years ago is there's been enough times recently where like I would go like on a seven-day vacation and mics like off the grid and mics like okay you're good like you know and like every other time for years I would literally do nothing and now like I may bang out a hundred push-ups on day five like it's a little bit more in me yeah fuck man it maybe I would hold on to tempers I would say that I would eat better forever yes yeah your nutrition would be much better yeah but that's only because of education I still have the capacity to like gain 15 pounds for no good reason eating yeah I would just know I was eating crap I would know that a muffin is a very high calorie execution versus literally 10 years ago I'm like oh muffins are blueberry muffins so I'm too educated now from a nutrition standpoint yep but I'm you know this I'd rather play three hours of basketball and like really put myself to exhaustion yeah then do a 30 minute workout that is hard I think yeah that makes total sense and to be fair I think that was one of the most surprising things when I first started with you I was like dude you're actually very good at basketball I was shocked how at how athletic you are and like it's like we wouldn't really do any conditioning but like you would play for eight hours 10 hours straight and it's insane what I love it and determination and competitiveness kicks in all these other things are kicking in yeah yeah yeah yeah I do think that's the other thing that was like exciting for me maybe this resonates for some people like I I very good mind muscle memory based on your guys feedback and other things I've done in my life like yeah so that was cool that was like fun to learn to even know what that means yep and flexibility I'm naturally you know I'm banged up with like the injuries of the QL and the and the but my natural flexibility is there yeah yeah you're shockingly mobile and it was actually really cool to watch that over time to watch like even like your neck mobility like watching as we as your neck improved that was something that was very cool cuz I remember when I would first touch your neck do you remember when I would touch your to the touch you would like it would be super painful do you remember that oh like I mean not only do I remember it like again similar to earlier podcast like it's something I bring up to people often yeah I would say that I bring up not only the the neck but if you what this little ball right here yeah yeah behind your ear do you remember that yeah yeah like like it's crazy I mean you changed my life with that like the tissue work around my neck and then just getting educated one big one now is I can't believe how much of my neck issue is actually my pack hmm yep yep like the fact that I can't even deliver that sentence now like the knowledge like rolling out my pack then helps me to this thing right there's so much more in tune with your body now and that rides up like the body is incredible to like now I understand like this thing here is doing this thing here and that's just like I couldn't even comprehend it that yeah yeah alright what is one thing that you wish that I learned from my time with you like if there's one thing that you wish that I would have taken from you from all the time that I had available to spend with you and and watch you and your ecosystems if there's one thing that you think I could have taken to improve my life what would you have wanted that to be one of my favorite parts of like thinking about our relationship is I do know even though probably in this podcast we've already touched on you articulating you know you know it's not that you don't articulate to me but like I'm very aware that I rubbed off on you in a positive way yeah yeah means the world to me it's the best and like honestly so the answer is there was a lot of things up front you know managing people you brought it up I was hyped on that because when you started you know one of the cool things that happened is you caught me at a time when things were happening in social that I was at the forefront of that you were able to you did a much better job of taking my advice on building your business and brand and Mike did yeah yep and you also had like this really epic shtick of like needing to probably be on SNL like I don't know how much your world here knows about like your capacity to have many different characters but it's in you in a big way you're always like what the hell is this like oh I thought it was really good like I actually thought it gave you a lot you especially remember Snapchat filters I was like you should make 30 different characters yes yes but like so managing people especially you start to have your own videographer and stuff of that nature but I would say the answer to your question directly is I even even you know back to even like getting refreshed with some like like even if you came and worked out with me for a month yep that's like a as a reunion tour because we just wanted to I miss you you miss me and Mike had to do something let's say we decided to do it in the same way that I know at the end of that month my tissue quality would be dramatically better yep I think you would be even a step in a better direction to be able to be detached from other people's energy to dictate your own yeah yeah I feel like you know what do I wish I wish that I gave you as many deposits as possible to know that your wife's behavior your kids behaviors and your clients behaviors and your friends behaviors and your mom's behaviors your brother's behavior like all of those should not dictate your behavior hmm hmm that was very cool for me to see your reaction every to everything yes point early everything was you reacting to it then correct and I wanted you to be in a place where you were able to not have that dictate how you navigated life you were on the offense versus the defense I remember one time we were I think I think it was the LA we were in LA and you were on the phone you never spoke on the phone during workouts ever ever but you're like hey I need to take this call which maybe happened less than five times in three years yep probably less than three times in three years and I was like curious like what's what's going on and you told me that there was someone who stole a huge amount of money from Vayner yeah like hundreds of thousands about millions of dollars from Vayner and I just remember you being like you had the call figured out and and then you're like okay let's work out and I'm I'm just jaw dropped so I'm like you want to work out now I'm like don't you want to like call the dude and fucking be like how could you you like should we go to the torch and let's like go get him dude like what like what is going on and not only were you so empathetic and understanding why that might have happened but also to detach your emotions to be able to say okay compartmentalize almost like cool let me now focus on my workout it was wild to me and there was another time this happened to there was one time where you came in we were in New York we were in your apartment gym in New York or and and I could tell you were a little bit more stressed the a little bit more stressed just quiet and when you were stressed you were quiet correct you had some mobility and I was like is everything okay and you're like I've got to let go a lot of people today and the end it you had and I was like how do you do that I was very curious like how do you do this what goes on through your mind and you're like well I do every single one like they come to my office like I you wanted to personally do it yeah and you're like all right let's work out and I'm just like watching you compartmentalize and continue on with your day and not let what others have going on prevent you from doing what you know you needed to do was transformational for me it's almost like that seeing is believing like people can watch you talk about it on social media they can hear you talk about it but seeing you actually live it real time was it was like watching magic it was very very odd in a strange way to see how you're able to do that my favorite part is of my favorite part of people getting close to me is knowing especially as I became more known knowing that they're asked about me yes delete and knowing that they were going to enjoy telling everyone that it's even more of it yes whatever that was being night like my niceness I don't I think we in society unfortunately are cynical to people that are nice yes and to your point it's easy to be nice if everything's rocking and rolling but the capacity to be kind in the face of adverse situations I feel like is really the testament to is it your framework and I think I always enjoyed my admins or you and Mike or others or the work ethic thing like most people really can't comprehend what it looked like oh my gosh no not even close not even close no like no no it's not even close it that was that was for me the most surprising thing that I ever like I've I don't know if I've told you the story there's I don't know where we were flying but we were flying somewhere like to and we landed to in the morning you me DRock we get off the plane and this must have been like six months in to me starting because I worked the entire flight I worked the entire flight and I think you must have seen it and you were walking off the plane we're in the terminal and you sort of sidle up next to me at two in the morning and you're like how much harder do you work now compared to before we started together I'll never forget it and I was a turning moment where I could compare my work ethic then to six months prior whatever it was it was night and day simply by seeing how much you work it was it was truly fucking insane yeah and by the way I think it's important for everyone to hear this like balance is important and like you know you can only do it it's similar to working out like if I go into a gym right now and watch someone go hard for three straight hours that's not something that I can achieve like you know like it's just because I just don't love it enough yeah like it's very and it's very dangerous for me to go three straight hours because I probably get injured in that scenario right and I think similarly like the reason I'm creating this caveat to this is somebody many people probably listening this thing can get very inspired but you have to listen to your body what Jordan will tell you what Jordan will tell you for sure this is something I've never talked to Jordan you like about actually because we've talked about so many things together because they have such a brotherhood I'm very good at listening to my body so for all my insanity Jordan like it didn't I mean again talk about something that probably happened three to five times in the time we were all together probably in the summer where I could pull it off but like I'm not scared to go to sleep at eight o'clock and sleep 12 hours right you know like I'm not scared to even if I'm supposed I mean this happened yesterday yesterday I was supposed to really do like four hours of hardcore work on something important and I'm with some of the team on the offsite and honestly I just wanted to spend some time with them and we did none I love that I mean I think permission to understand you one of the things one of the things that I took from it is there are a couple things number one is it's not that I had to work that hard it was just good to know that I can yeah you know I mean it's like seeing seeing you do it be like oh so if I need to I can like I it's almost like a four minute mile in that in that yeah I totally get it and like no one thought the four minute mile was doable then to see someone do it like then you've got all these hundreds of people doing it's good to know that you have that in you I think that's right and and by the way you felt the value I mean your professional career exploded yes year yes the content you were good at it we were right about what was happening on Instagram and Snapchat and all this stuff and you know it was fun for me to watch it happening for you too but I also got to watch you you know I have perpetually not gotten off the bike correct and you have and like I've done different of that of a public life of like you know yes and I think that's great too like I think you know for me I also don't fear getting off the bike correct you could if you wanted to yeah think you know me well enough to know like it's in me at any time to go completely left field and go in a completely different direction just because I'm too the only thing I am is focused on being me at all times yeah the only thing and this is who I am right now but if I become you know a rock climber explorer that wants to live farm to table and like you know Japan like in the middle nowhere like I can be about that life I know that just from one very simple thing that you would do where like we would be at the vacation house and like we could all just be hanging out and I don't know eight nine o'clock whatever it is hanging out laughing whatever and out of nowhere like I'm going to bed just like it's there was no it was like this is what I need to do for me right now but it was like we're in the middle of a great time great joke that I wasn't like hey guys like 20 more minutes it was just like I'm going to bed just like I'm up and you were gone so it's and I feel you could do that with much bigger things as well where it's like whatever you want you're gonna do it yeah as long as I'm not hurting anyone yeah you know like I I I think like being self-aware I think there's a big difference between self awareness and selfishness yeah and I think yeah that's how I think man wrap up all right we'll do some rapid fire all right how do you think AI will impact the fitness industry I think we're gonna learn a lot about the body that we now don't have full disclosure on or full clarity on and so I think modern science and medicine is gonna get very advanced and I think we're gonna I think it already happened on some Mike mentioned something to me there's some sort of exercise I'm doing right now yep or pull down from the yeah I guess it's for the this yeah for your tricep yep and he said some kid with AI figured out that we used to do it this way and now we just do it this way because the math showed that it's doing like something interesting like that already oh that's so interesting okay very cool I don't know if that was AI or if that was just a science kid in the last couple years but the punchline is once people understand how to use AI I bet you were doing some sort of exercise right now at an angle that has just been accepted because some famous person got it going and that we're just gonna learn like oh it like hopefully we'll get rid of Bulgarian split squats and we'll have different split squat that is actually more effective but not as atrocious our Bulgarians you're the least favorite if you had to pick one least favorite exercises of Bulgarians Bulgarians are up there though I've gotten so much better at I'm trying to think of something I feel like there's something the reason I paused was I feel like Mike makes me do something that I'm really not excited about I mean look all the leg stuff is challenging yeah app stuff has been historically challenging to me though I made real progress during COVID yep you know I'm really that was a real chapter for me where we really got there I was gonna say that the reverse crunches that we used to do you hated I don't know if you remember those what I don't love even right now I got one that I'm not in love with that I'm doing a lot of Russian twists they pissed me off the Russian twists are just like I just want to bang the mat like I don't look to them at all why what about them what don't you like about it just hard I guess like you know like you know this like in general rotation yeah what is this a cute yeah yeah my QL's you know or like not like so my rotation and now he doesn't let me cross my legs anymore I've moved up to like straight and honestly right now especially it's a pain he has cuz I have ten it didn't like tell you have tennis elbow yeah yeah struggling with it right now like like I I shook someone's hand yesterday and hurt like I'm like oh geez yeah it's so really little you know last year not only did I demonize carbs I was like right not injured ever yeah you're like I have a lingering hamstring from August I guess that was last year this tennis elbow thing's been a real fucking pain me ass my my right so like I'm like banged up but that's I'm playing too much basketball fucking forty and a half yeah yeah and when you play it's not leisurely pick up like you play intense it's it's really wild to watch you know you want to play but no I don't 90s nicks playing all right couple more before I feel like we went deep what's your favorite exercise what is your all-time if you had to pick one favorite one oh that's fun um you know I've always felt that my I've always felt very competent in my in my triceps prize I told Jordan or Mike like early on it was me I'll never forget this my there's a Jordan we don't need to work on this dude I literally had this in the notes I almost didn't tell you I have an admission so you I'll never forget this early on I had you do a tricep press down with this must have been within the first two weeks of working together so I'm still scared shitless two weeks I've done and you and you said what what muscle does this work and I showed you is it your triceps and you said no I don't need to do these because my triceps are like super well developed and then I remember I didn't I've never told you this there were times when I would have you tricep exercises and you would ask what muscle it works and I would lie so that's amazing I uh yeah so try exercise I've always been confident I'm so happy with my strength on bench like some of the stuff I'm doing now it's just dude your rows and your is what your rows are wild yeah my pull my pulled it my road that I'm really huge on yeah your dumbbell rows are absolutely insane they're what are you like 70 75s yeah 75s for eight yeah and good reps like yeah it's that's the other thing now that I see other gym that's the thing both you and Mike came through heavy for me like I do shit the right way yes you like swinging and doing all sorts of crazy shit yeah when you do rows your technique is is some of the best I've ever seen it's super slow and controlled full range of motion it's actually like 75s for eight with that technique is really insane that's it back to my kids if they were really into it I would say do the exercise right and don't let yourself get hurt one of things I had to learn as you know is I'm better now at if I feel something I'll stop mm-hmm whereas before I would go all the way through yep yep yeah makes total sense Gary thank you so much for coming on where where can people follow you where do you want them to go Gary VE on all platforms other than that I'm pretty sure they can find me Jordan continue success brother I love you love you man see it
In this episode I speak with Gary Vaynerchuk about my 3-year tenure as his personal trainer, coaching him 7-days/week for 3-years straight.
