(upbeat music) - We are back in the KidTech Studio. Dan Recho and Satyar Chate. Going to be a special mailbag edition ahead of the trade deadline. KidTech, Canada's favorite orthotics provider, powered by thousands of five-star Google reviews, sore feet. What are you waiting for? Yes, it's conduct central, and we are, for enzyme-specific fake, Hoover's premier Chrysler, Dodd-Ramm, and Jeep Superstore on Second Avenue between Cambien Main or at enzyme-specific-crisler.ca. Let's get right into it. We've got lots of questions. Hit the music. (upbeat music) The mailbag. We're going to do a pre-trade deadline mailbag. - Are we doing a post-ed line mailbag? - We will be doing a post. - So do you want tomorrow? - Yes. - Okay. - By the way, we're on three to six tomorrow as well. - Three hours of post- deadline coverage. - Yeah, and a cancel will join us, probably Patrick Aldin. - Yeah, hopefully. - Hopefully he'll be busy. - Wow. - Yeah. - By the time, we're like, we're post-ed lines, so. - Yeah. - He'll be relaxed and chill after I zoom. - Yes. - We should ask him about the stuff he couldn't do. - Hey, so Jake Genssel. - So how close were you on Jake Genssel? - Yeah. - I can't answer that. That would be temporary. - We have to ask him if he felt he competed hard enough during the deadline. - Do you have enough structure when you were talking about Jake Genssel? - Yeah. - We'll start with this one from Tim's. Who does Quinn pass the cup to first? Sydney Crosby, your Tyler Tifoli. - Oh man. Definitely Crosby. - I love silly season, right? Like Sydney Crosby's getting traded. You know how many people have asked me about this? I was talking to an old friend, childhood friend today. Randomly called me out of the blue. And he was like, hey, do you think Sydney Crosby's getting traded? I'm like, what? - No. - I heard some rumors. Like, come on now. - None of these rumors are like actually, it reminds me of some of the wacky rumors in the past, but it's being manifested. And perhaps, perhaps, maybe just maybe one day he'll become available. But yeah, Crosby's like very high on that list, for sure. - The only way Crosby ever becomes available in trade is if he seriously wants out of Pittsburgh, and there is zero indication, less than zero indication, that that would ever actually happen. So please stop it. As for Tyler Tifoli though, I guess that makes him the more logical answer. Quinn would pass the cup to Tyler Tifoli. But it's not gonna be Tifoli. - It would be first. - No, it would be JT, Patterson. What would be the assistance, no? Doesn't it go to the assistance? - No, it's either like, it's either the next-- - Unless you got Ray Bork on your team. - Yeah, I'm trying to think. Like, the Canucks don't have a guy like that who's been-- - Depends who, like, if-- Depends who played incredibly well outside of Quinn, like if Demko was having a consummate run. - Yeah. - Ian Cole, but he's like, done everything. - He's already gone. - No, he can't be gay. - Guys like top 15 and all-time playoff games or something like that. - Tyler Myers? - No. Connor Garland? - It would be Patterson. Of course it would be Patterson. - I don't have to worry about the contract anymore. They can hurt his feelings at times. Casual creations. What is considered all-in for the Canucks and should they actually do it? - They're already there, are they not? I mean, they traded a boatload for Elias Lindholm. - No, I think all-in is like-- - Yeah. - You're like, or Mackie, like all-in all-in. - I disagree, yeah, I disagree with it. I mean, if all-in is you're afraid of trading your top few like three or four assets, are you really all-in? - Yeah, I guess. - Like, we talked about how they made the Lindholm trade is like, it's a good trade, they paid a heavy price, but they didn't pay any of their premium assets. Like, a first-round picks a first-round pick, yes, right? But it's also going to be a later pick. It looks like this year, comparatively to other years. So it's like, it's not a super high price to pay. And they didn't trade one of their top three prospects. - No, or one of the top four or five young assets. - To me, being all-in is trading away with like one of your top two or three young assets, future assets. - But it's not even just Lindholm. I mean, they traded a fifth at the start of the year for Sam Lafferty. They traded for Nikita Zadora. - They paid a third for Casey to Smith as well in getting Tanner Pearson off the book. So like, your draft pick capital has been-- - That's not all-in to me. - Okay, there's still another level of all-in, but it hasn't been an inexpensive year of them adding to this team. - No, but I mean, making your team better isn't inexpensive. It costs money to make your team better. It costs assets to get better as a team, right? - Fair enough. - So all-in would be making another big trade. - All-in would be trading away with your top assets. To me, that's all-in. They're aggressive. They're very invested in the year. I'm not dismissing any of that. But to me, all-in is like, come hell or high water, you're getting that guy, no matter what the cost is. - Yeah. - All-in is like Vegas when they're gonna go and get boots named it's name. - I just, like, as much as I like Hansel as a player, and I think there's a lot of different ways the Canucks maybe could have gotten more aggressive to get it done ahead of Carolina. - I mean, to pay that expensive of a price if it's hoglander in a first or, you know, a first plus lekara-maki or willander as some have speculated for a guy who's currently injured, mind you, and not be able to get an extension done before the deal is consummated or while the deal is being consummated, like that's, that's a large risk. And that's, I think, prudent of the front office to not go the extra mile to get that done. - Next one from James. Tyler Tifoli sitting out tonight, do you think he's coming back to Vancouver? - Ooh, do I, I can't say I think he's coming back to Vancouver. I can't, I also can't say I don't think he's coming here, but I'm not confident to say I think he's coming to Vancouver. - You're not confident? - I can't, no, I can't sit here and say I think he's going to Vancouver, I'm not confident. Enough to say that. - So, a lot of the reporting around this, Eliot Friedman mentioned that LA and Tifoli would like to have a reunion and it's very complicated for LA to do something like that. Also said it's very complicated for Vancouver to have a reunion with Tyler Tifoli. So, I mean, just do the numbers. Not only the cost of what it would take to get Tifoli here, which depending on what Genssel does land and we're still waiting on what exactly Carolina is shipping to Pittsburgh beyond Michael Bunting, but like is Tifoli costing that much less than Genssel. He scored over 30 goals last year. He's going to score 30 again this year. - But he's not considered the same caliber of player. - I know, but you know, he's a tier below. - He is, so I don't think he's going to get as much. - Is it still a first round pick and a prospect or is it a second round pick and a prospect? - I'm pretty sure the ask is a first and a prospect. - Yeah. - Is anybody paying that price though, or is it going to be one or the other, where it's like, okay, you get the prospect where you're getting a second or a third. - Yeah. - Or you're getting the first where you're getting like a B plus prospect or a B prospect, you know? That to me, I think that's the equation there for him. - And it would be a nice fit for Vancouver on the right side, having to fully back, bringing them in on the power play where as power play could use another guy that helps them go, but I just, it feels like another one that all of the signs are pointing to Tyler to fully going elsewhere. - Yeah. I mean, we'll see. I think it's right now. - Yeah, I think that connects again, even with Genssel, until the very end, I think they're involved, they're trying and maybe even tried doing a little extra if they could. So, we'll see. I wouldn't like it again. I wouldn't be surprised if they could still do something that people will be pleased with, but we'll see if they do it. - This one from Doesn't Not Eat Sushi. Is it the smarter option for more long-term success for the organization to not do any more trades? Do you have more long-term success if you don't make any more trades at this deadline? - Um, I mean, logically you would say yes, because they're dealing futures in order to make the team better now. But that would depend on the type of player they acquire. If they acquire a player with term, then you're still adding to your team for the coming years. And the other part of it is how much of picks and prospects are just magic beans, right? - Yeah, but it's not just picks and prospects that make your team better in the long run. - Yeah, the one thing though I would also say is this roster could be very fluid this offseason. So, it wouldn't shock me at all that we see this team make some trades and maybe they do end up recouping some of those picks. - They're still players, they're not sold on as being part of the long-term future. - Well, again, like, we'll see what they have to do with Besser, right? He's gonna be 28, long-term, 'cause that's gonna be an easy negotiation. Like, we know even Mikayev, where are they with him, potentially, where are they at with Connor Garland even? - Yeah. - You know, on the back end, what happens with Philip Aaronic, right? So, I think there are a lot of things there that there might be avenues where they move somebody, get some futures, and then replace those guys in free agency. Like, the forwards, for instance, like, is there a world where, hey, you didn't get Gensil now, but maybe you move one of your forwards, get some picks, and then sign Gensil in the off-season, for instance? - Right. - So, I would say part of the futures aspect, that's a picture that has not yet been fully painted and could be reshaped dramatically this offseason anyways. - This one from Jabo, is there anything we can take from the Hanifen and Forzling contracts as it pertains to what Huronik's next contract might look like? - Sure, yeah, Huronik can't sign for more than six million bucks after Forzling signed for that number. - Yeah, but he's a lefty, and he's a righty, and Huronik's gonna put up, like, what, over 50 points this year. - He's a top pair defenseman on the team that is a Stanley Cup runner-up, and they're the best team in the league right now. - Yeah, he's not a direct comp for Huronik, I don't think. - 'Cause he's a left shot? - Yeah, I think for right shots, it's going to be different. They're viewed a bit differently, just like the values for it. - So I don't know if it's a direct comparable. - So both Hanifen and Forzling are left shots? - Yeah. - What was, did somebody report today that a guestimation on what Hanifen's contract would look like with the Vegas Golden Knights, like seven or eight million? - Seven per year, over eight. - Yeah, like 56. - 56 million total. - Anywhere from 56 to 60, depending on, you know, if it's 0.1, 0.2, seven, it's flat, whatever. - I still think, 'cause like Forzling was 37 points, a couple of years ago, 40 points last year, and is going to probably be right around 40 points again. So the three straight years of 40 points, Veronik's going to be on a two-year streak of that. I feel Florida got a real good bargain on Gustav Forzling, and I don't think Veronik should cost more than seven million bucks, even with the Canadian tax and all that. So does it end up there? - It feels like it's trending to be a pretty hard negotiation, but that's what I feel Veronik's ceiling should be is seven million a year. - I think the Uighur contract, Damon Severson, I think those are the ones that still kind of apply to Phillip Veronik, and because he's outpacing them, can he ask for slightly more? Can he ask for 52, maybe slightly more than that, million total? You know, those guys got 50 flat, right? - Yeah, 50 flat for Mackenzie Uighur, and at the time was just over 7.5% of the cash. - So 6.25. - Yeah. - So can you get her own sign to 6.5, 6.75? That's the range I would be comfortable with. Outside of that, I just kind of get squeamish. - All right. - This one, Gray and East fan, without considering contract or cost of acquisition, just straight up for this playoff run. Who would you rather have? Elias Lindholm or Jaykins? - I mean, so I'd say Genssel overall, but I do think again, like Lindholm's value, you're not gonna see it until the postseason. - Yeah. - Like true value for it. The only disappointing part is that they don't feel comfortable playing him on the wing. And the versatility is a big part of acquiring him. You can do multiple things, play a wing, can play center. - Well, he even talked about it in "Peace with Harmon Dial" today at the athletic about playing the wing. And, you know, your responsibilities are more forechecking. You're playing more of a straight line game. He prefers to be the guy that's carrying the puck through the neutral zone and doing those kinds of things, likes to be above the puck, rather than in hard on the forecheck. So, he thinks of himself as a center. And he feels more comfortable playing center. - Yeah. So it's very clear where he wants to play. - Yeah. - And that's the part where I'm most disappointed, that he can't adapt more to playing the wing. - Yeah. - So that's why I would shade Genssel. You know, but Genssel's value is very much like power play, play with Perpeterson. And not to say that's not valuable, it's very valuable. But he's not helping you on the PK, right? Like he's not helping you in a shutdown role, or in those types of situations, right? But, you know, I think Genssel just has that extra elite pop and playing with Perpeterson. Whereas right now, what Lindholm was playing is very valuable to the team, he can help the team. It just doesn't give you that pop that Genssel can give you. - I think we'll see Lindholm start to come out of it. His family just got to Vancouver. Get through the trade deadline now that all these rumors popped up about him. You got a nine game home stand starting this weekend, so you can get settled, spend some time with family, get to know the city a little bit, have a lot more practice time because the games are spaced out for the Vancouver Canucks. I think now, if you don't start to see the best version of a Laius Lindholm in the next couple of weeks, you start to see the offense pop a little bit more, then maybe I'd even have more concern than I already have had to this point, but it's pretty clear, especially with the bar as low as it is right now. The best of a Laius Lindholm is still to come. I thought it was the right deal for the team to make at the time, and I'm going to stick with that assessment. - Next one from Matt. Is it strange that the Canucks aren't leaking much of their intentions, and did they miss out on depth pieces because they were too focused on pencil? - I mean, who have they missed out on? Dohaim and Trenen? - Yeah, and that like maybe Manta, I guess? - Yeah, he's not a depth piece though, making five, I mean, you know, that's a-- - Dohaim, it seemed like third round pick for Dohaim is more than I would have expected. Minnesota to get, not that that's a huge price, but still something, and like those kinds of players, if you set a value on them of what you're willing to pay, and it goes above that, it's not the type of player I would say that you need to like go the extra mile to be, say like, you know what, we only had a fifth round value on this guy, but if somebody else is willing to pay a third, sure, we can do that too, it's just like, I don't know, like Trenen Dohaim really isn't moving the needle all that much for me. - No, I like Tohaim, and we'd like them as like, hey, if you're paying a fourth or a fifth, you know, I'm not sure I'm paying a third round pick, so what did you miss out on overpaying for a fourth liner? - Right, like he's not even, early projections are, he's not even in Colorado's lineup. - Yeah, he's a depth guy, like he-- - So he's like their 13th forward. - Yeah. - Trenen, Trenen and I like a little bit more than Dohaim, but still, there's gonna be other guys out there tomorrow, Canucks, as Sat mentioned earlier in the show, probably still going to be busy, so, you know, guys like Dohaim and Trenen, there's other types around the league, similar to them, and I'm sure the Canucks will be dipping their toe into something. - Next one from Patty, will we see Lecker and Mackie in the playoffs on Pedersen's right wing? - No, we will not see Lecker and Mackie. He's had an unreal year, an incredible bounce back year after his draft plus one season, but could we see him in the AHL, maybe playing with the Abbotsford Canucks in the AHL playoffs? That's more of a possibility than him playing games with the Vancouver Canucks in the playoffs. - Yeah, I don't think it's happening. I mean, just be realistic about where he's at and what you would ask of him in the postseason. Could he be a black ace maybe? - Yeah. - I think a lot of things would have to go wrong for him to play games in the playoffs for the Canucks. - Yeah. - That's the next question. Justin, he's a fan. Who are your top three black aces for the Canucks going into the playoffs? - Ooh, so I think Raw two would be one. - Yeah. - I could see Cole McWhord. - Cole McWhord. - Righty defenseman, you know. - Would Mark Friedman get bumped into being a black ace because they had another depth defenseman? - Yeah, I mean, he could be, you know, he's certainly gonna be there. I think those guys are no brainer, so like they'll be there for sure. Like Mark Friedman, like surprise guys. Like Sheldon drives would probably be one. More so than R.G. Bains or Vasily Pudkolzen? - I mean, Pudkolzen might be on the roster. - Yeah. - That's true. I mean, he's back up with the team. He's playing tonight, so. - How many black aces can you have? - Three. - Three. - Three or four? - Yeah. - I think it's three. But you can always like, and things happening, you can always call guys up too still. Like it happens, right, where guys come along. But I think they would probably lean perhaps on a few that are, you know. Is there a Christenev-level black ace? Not sure about that. But the Canucks will have probably a collection of those names that we just gave you as their black aces. - This one, unsigned, is Anthony Duclerc worth looking into? - Looking into, yes. What's the price? I prefer Barabanov more than I prefer Anthony Duclerc. - Yeah, to me, they're not too dissimilar. Like I don't know if Barabanov's truly going to be a fit in your top six, and I'm not sure Duclerc will be a fit in your top six either. Could they play there for a bit and give you some ability and some versatility down your lineup, for sure? - Like Barabanov, having a terrible year. But he did have close to 50 points last year. Like he's not been good. - No. - And San Jose has not been good. - No. - Three goals in 38 games. - And he's still kind of a guy that's learning how to be like a reliable player at the NHL level. Now he's spent two years on a really bad team. - Yeah. Like is he stepping up and all of a sudden going to do all the things that Rick talk would want for him to do? And then excel at it? It could be like, again, I'm not against adding him. I just be very measured in what I would expect from him. I mean, hey, I hope it pops and it goes crazy, but I just think it could be a bit of a work in progress. - I'm always like the player. - We'll see. He could be a bargain, if not a trade deadline option could be a bargain free agent. - Yeah. - Look in the summer. - Yeah. - We'll end with a couple here. - Joshua and Surrey and Ray and Richmond, a couple more names. Do you think Trevor Zegris is an option and is Justin Scholz available? - I think Scholz is available. Because we're seeing-- - Seattle's getting ready to sell off a few pieces. - They traded Wenberg already, either looking to move Eboly as well. You know, Justin Scholz, he's been on our list for a long time, right? Like to me, Justin Scholz is on my list. Eboly's on the list as well, 100%. Zegris, I just don't think that's realistic. He's also a center. Now, could he play wing potentially? But he's also an injured, that's an off-season thing. If you explore that, that's an off-season thing. - Yeah, Zegris, I'm still, I think Jerry's still out on whether or not Zegris gets traded. - Yeah, I mean, I still don't know if anybody's gonna give you what you would want to punt on a player who in his first two years that over 60 points and has a potential to be a point-per-game high-level scorer. - Is it, does it have to be similar to the middle stat buy-room type trade we just saw? Would you not want more even? - I think Zegris is more established in middle stat. - Yeah, that's fair. And is a guy who puts butts in seats, which owners really like. I don't know if you know this about NHL owners. - Butts in seats matter. - Butts in seats matter. All right, coming up. Greg Wuchinsky's gonna join us his take on what is developing Jake Genssel to the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes finally bending on their rule of paying big prices for rental pieces at the deadline. Still don't know the full extent of what they paid for Genssel, but it appears that is the deal that's going to happen. Wuchinsky on that and more ahead of NHL trade deadline Friday here on Canucks Central. - Discussing the biggest stories that matter to Vancouver sports fans, howford and Bruff in the morning.
