610 - BitD When I Die, Will I be the Ghose of Ghost?
(music) Hello and welcome to the Night to the Night actual play podcast. This "Plays in the Dark" adventure "Mackination" is written in run by our GM John. And now please enjoy episode 610. It's titled "When I Die, Will I Be the Ghost of Ghost?" actual play begins immediately. (music) Hello and welcome to tonight's the Night actual play podcast. I'm our GM John hosting "Mackinations" our "Plays in the Dark" campaign. Play us with me tonight, starting on my left. I'm Thomas, I'll be playing Hadrian's Briar or Burning Briar while I'm on the job. I'm a leech, which means I'm a saboteur and technician, though I personally specialize in alchemy and arcane spark of craft. I'm a run of my Arubian demon air and I currently look like an accuracy man of healthy build and noble stock fitted with a long coat, scholarly clothes, glasses, and a thorny Briar bursting out of, oh wait, didn't we fix this a little bit? Yeah, okay, so I'm burning on the bed Briar, just barely peeking out of my mouth. And much more notably, a great big furnace installed in my belly that leaks out eeks of white-blue ghost flame that sometimes spell out the true emotions that I might be hiding behind my puppeted face, I have floor stress and a level one harm of some rare spasms that rack me here and there to ruin my day. Hello all, it's Scott, I'll be playing Tesserling Vale. Tesserling is also known as the Bell of the Abyss, she is a seborosi whisper, she does the dirty work for the archive of echoes by exploring the past via ghosts with her mentor Lord Pendren. Tesserling is partial to petticoats, she has auburn hair, olive skin and green eyes, she also has a dead left hand sewn onto her wrist of which she is very mortified with, Tesserling has to stress. Hey folks, I'm Jim, I am playing a silver tongue slide named Skieven being also known as busy, he's a socializing, enterprising, handsome, young, grossie noble. When not working on crew business, busy can be found trying to revitalize the finances of the being coal mining family, he has a knack of finding ways of profiting from the good and bad fortune of others, currently Skieven's got about four stress and a little bit of trauma which makes him limp a bit. And I am Tom, playing Esther Roland, she is an ex blue coat captain who goes by the name of ghosts because of her pale skin, eyes and hair. She is a cotter who is dangerous and intimidating figure but she also does her best to keep her crew members safe. Her issue is that she grew up in this town and she's never really mentioned to anybody or family for her reason, but currently she's dealing with life pretty well, she only has two stress which for her is pretty damn low. So she's doing a little better, Michael playing Gordon, a young, thin, good-natured, scovish lurk. As a lurk, he specializes in infiltration allowing him to bypass most security measures, he currently has three stress. Okay, one last we left, we rolled engagement at the end of downtime which is not how it's supposed to go, but we did it and got demon visitation. So we took the break to come up with some things that Tara might want from us. Okay, so we've upgraded Gordon, you've got some contacts, how many, do you want to give us a number, John, of how many contacts Gordon has within Iron Hook? Gordon spent some time in an orphanage as his family was kind of, I don't know if they died in the unity war or went missing. I don't think anyone does. So you've got a number of folks you were raised with who kind of ended up in one gang or another on the mean streets of Crow's Foot and some of them are spending time here. They are largely under the take of Crow's Foot. It's a gang you haven't tousled with, you managed to have Dharma, I believe, tuck you under his wing and teach you a trade and escaped poverty that way. It didn't stop you from stealing, but it was a cleaner exit from the orphanage than most managed. Yeah, he was a supervisor when I was a painter. You've gone on to other work, but you have spent some downtime with him on occasion when you indulge twice. He's not really the subject today. Right now, it's your orphan friends who are working for the Crow's inside Iron Hook prison. Can you also know a guard who might be able to move him to the right location? Or is that a... Great. Now that he has Iron Hook contacts, yes. I think it will be, it's probably going to be a blue coat. Maybe one that wasn't on the worst of terms with Esther when she left and is able to move some stuff around without too much notice. So let's have a blue coat name of Sullivan, Sullivan Oodol, Esther, you manage to track down Sully at a cop bar just over the bridge from Dunslow where Iron Hook is. So let me consult the city map. I think that's like Charholo or yeah, Coleridge, let's say Charholo. It's the same district that houses Cortland. That's not who I thought you were saying because she's no longer a blue coat. You're not sure what she was but she has a pass to a tone for much like you do. She just has this guy likely as an enemy and you're headed to this district to find him and trying to avoid being seen talking to him at the same time as you know your friend operates out of here but you can bring Gordon with you if you want. It is just a conversation about how I'm like a friend is going to be in there for a minute. Can you look out for him? Yeah. I would like Gordon nearby in case it starts to go well then I can have him show up show up and introduce. Yeah. All right. I don't want to make you roll for something you already paid for as a crew upgrade. But I'm curious with how this conversation goes, maybe he owes you a favor so he's going to do it either way but I want to know what your relationship with him is because he's still on the force. He's still a blue coat but he's working at that jail cell, right? He's operating an iron hook at the moment. And so I tell him when I see him again, so how is the new job? I know it's not a new job. You've been there what, a year, two years now? Kind of lost track because it was close to when I left the blue coats. Yeah. That was almost three now but I don't know at times it can be more dangerous than patrols but really it depends on where you get stationed. Time flies fast when you're having fun, huh? But as I told you, that's a safer, more structured area than being a blue coat on the streets where if you annoy people, they might kill you, where you're in charge and it is a safer environment for you. Now you know I left the blue coats because of a completely different issue. Yeah. It does show a bit that you haven't worked iron hook before. No, I never have but I suggest that he go there and I'm just trying to verify that that's his talk back as he says, it does show a bit you haven't been there three months ago. We had a bit of a riot and I would have rather been in Crow's foot than there at that moment. Every day you can have a riot in Crow's foot. People can try to kill you on the streets. I just feel it's safer for you, especially when now that you're higher up, more in power? Yeah. There's plenty of deals you can cut with the criminals there that make it a safer place for you, but when the riot hits that goes out the window. True enough. What have you done for me lately is all they ask. Well I can imagine that you probably try to do a decent job because there are some nasty people there and I don't qualify you as a nasty person. Never have. I appreciate that. I don't think you would have liked to see when we had to call in the Imperial military on it. No, I get that. The vast majority of the people there should be there, but I get that there are people that shouldn't be. I understand that and speaking of just exactly that subject, you plan on taking a visit soon? No, actually I have a friend who's going to be put in there just as a member that's going to be interviewed soon to get some information from. Some deals can only be made in Iron Hook. I've gleaned that my first week. True enough, true enough, but one of the reasons I wanted to get together with you is to make sure everything's been going well for you. That's important, but I would also like to suggest that you are aware of this individual and you can help him stay safe and potentially help him if he gives you any suggestions. He's not a prisoner. He's not a true one. I always thought that you were someone who followed and kept people that didn't deserve to be treated poorly. You kept them safe and well. You are one of the good blue coats instead of a can. Like I said, any pictures, any one I should look out for a name, well he hasn't been arrested because he hasn't done anything wrong, but they're going to ask him questions and they kind of want to intimidate him while he's in there and I happen to have brought him along. So, can I suggest you meet him and also help him in any way and I'm trying to get a little more commanding, as I call on, as I used to work with him. I don't know if I was specifically in charge of him. Probably. He's lower on the wrongs, so I'm kind of stepping back to things I've done in the past, which hopefully will be more intimidating to him if it's something that I've done before as in demanding things. Sure. Let me see him. I turn around and look and where is Gordon right now? I had him sitting over by the bar and I have no idea what he's doing currently. He's standing not too close nearby and just people watching and looking if somebody's particularly vulnerable to pickpocket or something. Keeping myself amused. I got an eye on you when you were briefly at the bar. He was trying to decide if you were old enough to even be in here. Well, I waved my hand to try to get your attention and then I wiggle my fingers towards me like, "Come over here." Yeah. What's up? Yes. This is the gentleman I spoke about. I would like you to meet him. Have a seat. This is Gordon and he needs protection. This kid didn't last very long an iron hook. I make a face that is trying not to laugh, but I am definitely smiling. Gordon's smiling is like, "What the fuck?" Well, you see, he's aware of a lot of the people that are in prison and you are definitely young and a good young man. So you shouldn't have to be there too long or in danger. Yeah. It's unusual for someone to be brought into iron hook for questioning. Usually they're at a precinct or something. I think they're trying to impress him and/or scare him. You know how that goes. Magistrates can be like that, yeah. They can be, well, you know why I laugh because of dealing with people like that, that nonsense. But this young man should be kept safe. See, on parole right now, I don't think that he'll ever find something that is going to put him in jail. He's a accept for the next couple of days. Well because, again, they're trying to intimidate him and he is a person who gets around and knows and sees things. That's kind of what his job is to be out there and aware. What do you mean? Is that what landed you in this water? You see something you shouldn't have? Right. So I'm not really clear on what the questioning is all about, but I suppose I'll find out. Well, no business in mine either way. No, but I think it's important for you to keep him safe and help him if you can. Yeah. He shouldn't be in the maximum security part for obvious reasons. So I'll move around some shifts. If you can give me some days, I'll make sure I'm in the right department. And we definitely have a day because busy is the one that's going to say what it's going to be. But do I need to make a role? Yeah, go ahead with your command. This can be how well he situates himself. Okay. The role will be to dice. I don't know if you want to try to assist Gordon by spending a stress and impress this man about how a nice person you are and you should be kept safe, but it would be one stress. I almost called him a dick there for a minute, so that's good to know. Yeah, sure. I'll take a stress. All right. So that'll out of dice. All right. It is risky. Just the situation in jail is risky. I'll answer this. And he's not the commanding officer there, so there could be some trouble in the last second. So the fact it would be standard or limited? Standard. Okay. It's mostly what you get. I haven't rolled yet. Oh, okay. So I'm trying to decide it devil's bargain kind of scares me. But is there one that you would suggest? If you can't take a one, then that's fine. I'm trying to think of all the irons I got in the fire. What if he is it possible that someone that we don't want to know he's there would be there? What are you rolling right now? Two. I'm up to three. Oh, well, just do it. Devil's bargain would be he opens up about what made you quit the force. What heinous thing you were made to do that made you decide you have to quit? And it's something that Gordon wouldn't learn? Yep. Sure. So, well, it wasn't a good question. I would say that what happened was that I had a father who had passed away a little bit old, but not terribly old and that in the end, they had come and accused my mother and were attempting to bring her in for questioning and ended up actually killing her, which is why I was very upset with how this city ended up doing things that were totally nonsensical and that my father died of something that was natural and they were blaming her and they were not even researching it and dragging her away to questioning her when they shouldn't have been and ended up killing her because she resisted too much and that's not to say that I still don't have a few siblings alive, but that's a lot of things I don't like to share with anybody because I don't want to put my siblings in danger as well. Okay. Sounds reasonable and that's something that Gordon can definitely find out about, not that I imagine, Gordon, whenever you said against me, I think he asks how are the rest of the family holding up after what happened with your mom? That's not something I share, I say, looking over at Gordon and anybody that's around the table, but in general, they're doing okay. I know grief can drive people to some dangerous activities, so I just wanted to make sure none of your folk end up in a similar situation or pass through my domain. And that's what I'm attempting to do is keep them safe because, you know, I don't really agree with a lot of the decisions made by those higher up, but maybe someday you'll become higher up and then I'll make people better. I'm trying to be nice to him because I'm also trying to derail the thought of what we're talking about here. I don't think I came from the right kind of family for that, but I appreciate the sentiment. Yes, I agree that you have to be born into power rather than be smart or wise or kind. Or even just effective. Exactly. Yeah, sergeants about as high as you were going to get no offense just how it goes. Right. And not to say that people above me weren't as smart or as nice as anyways. I don't want to go on to this tension. All right. If you could in any way help this gentleman, Gordon, I think it would be very wise of you and very helpful. If I myself am not overseeing him, I'll make sure I know who is and put some word out. And let's see how truthful this works out. Oh, critical success. That was that that was that fourth one that added the other set it certainly was one five six six. So your stress and that yeah, those last two made it double six. I think we're going to be good, Gordon. Thank you. Mr Sullivan and it's great to meet you again, Mr. Southern. Or I wouldn't call him Mr. Soft and have a calm, solid, silly, it's great to see you again, Sully. Perhaps we should meet more often. I hope under better circumstances, but yeah, agreed. But do you really think it'll ever be better situations? Look, I don't want to go on a bender tonight. Don't do me like that. How about I just buy you a drink? In fact, I'll buy all of us. I wave my hand in the air again to bring someone over. All right. Well, there's that scene. What else are we doing for gathering info or should we stuff on one of the records that I can get either through the Spirit Wardens information and or just the government in general about looking for his information about the past demographers, demographers that have been here and what happened. All right, Spirit Wardens have some records. They aren't Imperial military, so they weren't the guards, but they do dispose of the corpses when people die to make sure a ghost doesn't come out of them. So they definitely have ledgers and attached notes. Yeah, I'm also curious to see if like maybe the spirit got taken away to the hall or whatever or something, you know, put the archive or whatever they call it. Yeah, I'm going to do some studying. Sounds like it. You have the right to be there, so it's not like you have to talk your way in, unfortunately. If that were your only role, you would do well, but today you're combing through books. So under the guise of Degellos, if you could give us a role, any modifiers? Their records are well kept. I think you're going to have a great effect for finding out the grizzly details of these deaths. It is risky and that there is scrutiny when you go digging into certain files, asking why and what cases it pertains to. No extra dice, just those conditions. You can push yourself, but you are alone here, so there's no aid coming to you. If you want to ask about a devil's bargain, let me know. Not on this. Okay. We're just going to hope for the best. Sure. Oh, failure, I rolled it to you. Okay. You remember Catherine? She's got a tiger mask. She's your boss. Yeah. She's always there. Always watching. She puts a hand down on the book you're looking at points to one particular target, a demonologist by the name Elias. This one was sent up to White Crown. White Crown is our main base of operations, as you know. The crematorium is usually where things end up, but sometimes superiors take an interest in a particular dead. Only under the orders from on high back in Imperial City. Any reason you're looking into this one? It is rather need to know. I'm going to say that word is we got a new demon hunter coming in and just looking to see what happened to the ones that came by the case they come my way. I'm going to try to talk my way out of it that way. Part of the patch of a demonographer is that in addition to training, they must consign their soul over to the immortal emperor. Their spirits are not burned. They are repossessed, sent back home, or they stay here. It depends. I believe this one actually went missing. And, if I had to guess, I'd say Lord Pandran was involved. Yeah, I give like a scoff like they don't like the guy. But, enough of this. I think you've had your fill of these records. I do need you out on patrol. As you know, in our convore, we're making moves into silkshore. That's not your usual route, but I need your expertise there. As rumors going around that we intend to explore on that holiday, I would like you to look around. Let's go to the map room. And she drags you over away from your studies to the map room where she rolls out a scroll of silkshore and highlights a couple of bridges and patrol paths you need to take. I see. There is something wrong with the spirit wells here. Normally, we get a pretty predictable haul of spirits that congregated these for additional energy. And lately, they've been absent, empty. Since trafficking them, we need to find out who. So, mask on, attune while you can. I don't want you burnt out, but as much as you can. As always. Farewell. Safe patrols. And she has your book under her arm as she walks away. Yeah. But you do have a lead on a ghost that might know something. Do you come back to the crew with us? Because Penron isn't really your bag. Yeah, I'm supporting the information on Elias is the missing demon hunter soul. One of Satora's victims. Elias's soul is missing or his spirit is missing or his body. His body was handled. The spirit was consigned as part of his demonographer packed to return to the imperial city and vanished before it could do so. Quite unusual that the spirit wardens can't wrangle. A ghost to where it needs to go. But if anyone could pull a trick like that, it would be a demonographer. Tesslyn, you have that spirit. I have Elias. You have Elias. You used the grouping that I absconded with when the night of. You used him to help bind Hadrian to the body he occupies. OK. Don't you owe him a favor now? He made an offer of knowledge in exchange for freedom. Yeah. It's coming back to me now. I'm looking in my notes to see if I can find out where I don't seem to have. I don't think he was named before. Oh, OK. It was just a spirit that I was dabbling with. That was the one. You sure it was the spirit that I helped because I thought I just helped Reyer with some ritual circles and stuff. I thought I went in a bender and drank or inhaled Elias. He would have held a member of the Callus family. Yes. Because you were doing studying as part of locating the hand of Qatar as they were the last known right. That wielders. You're saying Elias was a ghost I used to help Reyer. And I'm just drawing a blank. Yeah. You were doing magical circles, but your specialty is not in demonography. So you dipped into the archive and pulled out a demonographer who could help you. I believe this was our last downtime, but yes. I think it was not your scene. It was actually Reyer's. It was just something that happened. Reyer. Do you remember this? Yeah. I remember the guy. I remember them almost. I think you were rather tight-lipped to him because of obvious reasons. I was to Reyer was not or Reyer was interacting with this spirit because they are at odds most of the time. Okay. So when busy comes back with his information, I'm like, oh, Elias, there has to be the connection is kind of the idea here, right? Yep. You have the ghost of someone's. The tower has murdered, okay, did you set it free? No. Well, I suppose I could question the spirit would be a good step in the right direction. Yeah, it seems easier than just checking the broadsheets and looking for demonography shaped murders. Okay. You want to whip them out, summon them up. Yeah. So to my work room with flasks and files and Bunsen burners, I guess it would be Bunsen burners. They just burn with the Leviathan blood, right? They can. Leviathan blood does burn if treated first. It has to be refined in a certain way. Well, that sounds exactly the kind of thing you would need to do to work with spirits. Yes. Leviathan blood is very potent spiritually has a lot of life energy in it. Something ghosts crave constantly. Okay. Because of the fact that I'm not going to have all the right questions to ask, does everyone want to partake? I don't normally offer my spirit questioning up for group endeavors. But since this is something that we can all learn from and some people might have ideas that I might not have, does anyone want to partake in this questioning with me? There is some danger to be fair, but I'll do my best to contain the spirit and we can ask questions of it on your dress. Well, if you're doing anything that's dangerous, you know, I'll be there to help you. And even if it's a spirit, I am a ghost fighter now. So I can help well, Esther, your help is definitely appreciated as is your keen mind. If you'd like to hear any interest in this demonographer, it is interesting in general, but I don't want him to know anything more about me because he will be an asshole about it. If he ever gets in anybody else's hands, so you're gonna skip. I might observe and try to poke in if I have anything specifically relevant, but when you say he will be an asshole, Elias, the ghost, gotcha. Oh, Peter, in his opinion that the less interaction about her. Are you interested in busy and being involved in the questioning of the spirit? I'm just interested in the information, but not interested in the dangerous part of it. Kind of busy. Yeah, in the procedure. Okay. And then lastly, Gordon, anything you would like to be involved with or do you prefer to keep your distance from another world? Yeah, that's not really my thing at this point. Okay. So it sounds like it's you and me, Esther, with Briar at the doorway, being able to lean in with any questions he might have. Sound about right? That was good. Okay. Then I prepare the apparatus that extracts the spirit from the vial and puts it into a untenable position of slight pain through the use of the burning of the vialithin blood and bring it forth into this dimension. Okay. You carefully channel Elias into the environment and give us a role. I'm assuming that's an attunement role? Oh, for sure. Okay. It is risky. You are going to have great effect because of your workshop. Also just so you know, Mr. Jim, yes, that my ghost fighter skill allows me to imbued my hands and weapons or even tools with spirit energy so they can be used on the spirit. But an additional of imbuting my hands, I have the ability to grab them and hold them, restrain them, capture them. Okay. So I will probably use that for one stress to add a dice. Does it have like an activation cost? Oh, you are saying that to, yes, to add a dice. Okay. As an assistance. Right. As the special ability of ghost fighter, it says nothing about Austin. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. I was confused why you're spending a stress. It's just an ability that I normally have can now be done with spirits, but it's to give a bonus and then help. So yeah, that's what the absolutely makes sense. I was just on the wrong page. No problem. Okay. So that takes me up to four dice from the three dice of attunement. Risky position. Great effect. I don't suppose my spirit being charm or my fine lightning hook or spirit mask at any dice. Just affect. I think it's usually and you have great effect here. So so I don't. Yeah, it's all good. Not much higher to go from there. Okay. Extreme effect. Which extreme effect? Yeah, it should be. Just as great. Well, there is a possibility. I'm disappointed that it's not in this. Okay. Well, I'll say, but we'll take note of it when we need to. You are not there. I will go ahead and make the role for attunement to this particular spirit. And I rolled very poorly. My highest role was a four, which is a partial success. Everything else was below that for whatever reason my attunement isn't quite catching hold as much as I would like it to. And the spirit is not under control as I am normally accustomed to. Begin your questioning and I'll introduce complications as they occur. Okay. Elias, thank you for joining us. I appreciate your time and effort in your help if you can in this endeavor. I'm wondering what brought you specifically to the city of Dustfall back when you came as a demonographer several years back as a certain ceremony to graduation, a final task that you're set on. It always differs, but mine was to head to Dustfall and search for errant demons to be brought under the emperor's purview. Thank you. Who was entertaining you? Who was your host when you came to Dustfall? My family has relations to who was the lady governor at the time and he grimaces at the slight discomfort that your apparatuses put him in. Apologies. I'll try to make this brief so that you're in as little pain as possible for a short period of time as possible. How did you meet your demise? It's as little pain as possible, huh? Well, it's the only way I know how to summon you forth. I apologize if it's- No, I'm referring to the subject matter. Well, it happens to be something we're quite interested in because of an endeavor that we're about to undertake and it crosses with your path in the past. So if you could be so kind- Body was turned against itself. Were you alone at the time or were you, like, way-laid or do you know who caused your demise? I had arrived by train with my full kit. I had set up in the Church of the Ecstasy of the Flesh and had begun my rituals for summoning and binding. Apparently, I underestimated the power of the creature that I summoned while I had the right substance for its manifestation. It chose a different vessel. It manifested inside of me. Most unfortunate and sounding quite painful as well. I'm sorry for your loss. Because it was inside you, you must have intimate knowledge of that entity. As much as my senses could give me, did it have any weaknesses, something you could exploit if you were to face it again? I likely would have taught someone else to perform the ritual and bound them. But you don't know of any specific weaknesses to the demon that entered your body. My death was swift. I wish that I had more time to investigate it, I just know that when a demon of flesh and meat takes you over, you don't have long to live. Again, my apologies. Is that where, if you were to guess a destination for another demonographer coming to our fair city, would you assume that the ritual itself would take place in the church of Exos? It was largely my connections with the Lady Governor at the time that led me there. The church has its own interests in demonography that provided me with the environment and the space I needed. I don't know this new demonographer. I don't know any one of this generation outside from my captors. If you didn't have the contact you had with the Lady Governor, where would you have gone to perform your ritual? Would it still have been the church or would it have been somewhere else? I think that I would have engaged with the church either way of the Forgotten Gods. I would have sought someone out with a similar. It may have depended on which demon I was conferring with, but it would have been one of their ilk that I could have duped into manifesting this creature for binding. Is it your vision to get one demon, a particular demon, all the demons? His trial was probably unknown to me to wrangle this particular one. I was not fed the details. I did what research I could when I arrived and prepared as well as I could have. It was insufficient. Esther, does anything come to mind that I may have missed a question that I should be asking that I might not have thought of yet? I cannot think of anything off hand. I wish I could. Sorry. That's OK. Elias, would it be all right if I summoned you again in the future if a question or conundrum comes up that I think you might have information on that I might be able to ask of you, would that be OK to go ahead and do that? I know this is somewhat painful for you, so I wanted to procure permission before I did so. You know that it doesn't need to be painful. The way I was taught is a bit painful. I've offered you knowledge and you put me back in the bottle and summoned me like this. It is your choice to torture ghosts. You have other options. If you were truly inside me, you'd know that I didn't have other options. I am offering you one. Every time you summon me, I offer you knowledge and you take what you need and put me back in the bottle. Well, that's how this is going to end again. But if I do need knowledge in the future that you're offering, I'll be sure to bring you about and get that knowledge. Thank you for your time. And back he goes. So you channel him back into the bottle. Yes. He reaches out and the Leviathan flame searing him sparks and flares up, grabs at your dead hand and a taste of what I could offer you and pulls you through that limb and your body falls limp as your ghost is ejected out and he slips back into his bottle. Okay. And I'm unconscious. Correct. Your body is your soul is fine. And I grabbed the soul. All right. The soul's not trying to escape just so you know, I know that but it's like I'm trying to pull you towards your body like do I need to do this? What's going on, Tesla? I'm trying to talk. Yeah. You grab her. You are able to like lead her toward the body. Her body stirs without her. Oh, shit. And gets up. Looks around at you. Oh, I am. I am looking around at Breyer and I do what's going on here. What's inside of Tesla? Your body is still you without a soul. Do you know what a hollow is? I do not. I mean, I think I read about them some time a long time ago briefly, but I don't have a really good feeling. The church of the ecstasy of the flesh makes hollows. They burn the soul out of a person, but leave the mind and body intact. This is a variant on that. Your soul was ejected. You can perceive and manifest and do some spiritual actions, but you're not well-practiced in them, but your body is independent. It's once it's sold back. So there isn't any fight here. You are able to get back into it and repossess it. Yeah, I come fully to be like, it's all right, gentlemen, I'm okay. I'm back. I'm not a gentleman. Oh, yeah. Sorry. I'm not a gentleman for the both of us. She spoke, I think, because she was startled and not quite fully back into herself. She's like, Esther, I'm so sorry. Yeah, that's never happened before. My apologies for that. And what you know, the church does, usually there has been a hollowing that has been reunified before, but it's like a ritual. And they end up being vampires, and this was not that. This is something else. When a person is killed and their spirit gets loose, don't we normally hear birds? Did we hear that? No. That wasn't a death. Well, I know you're not dead, I get that, but it did not ring out. Well, Tesslyn is shaken very much by that experience, also shaken by the fact that her small secret of causing a little bit of pain to the spirits might have gotten out, depending on how much Esther and Briar believed of the ghost. So she's out of sorts, her eyes are downcast because she's embarrassed, she's like, okay, well, we got some information. It wasn't as much as I hope to get, but we could always summon him again if we need further information, but he didn't seem to know much about the process of, I mean, he told us how he died, and that's useful, that we know that Satara has manifested directly into his body in order to kill him. I don't know why she wouldn't use the same tact with the new demonographer. Confuses why she wants us to take on this job if she's handled demonographers in the past quite successfully, several of them. I think that's worthy of looking into, I mean, she's an ally. I consider her a friend, but even friends have agendas, and I just don't think we're getting the full story from her, based on what that particular spirit had to share. That's fair. She told us that the demonologist who was coming by in particular is a specialty that trumps her in some regard but wouldn't bother me. I don't know if she was talking about elemental so much as this demonologist is the third, and she killed the last two they've been gathering hints. You guys gave you a hint, maybe they accessed the archive of echoes beforehand, they don't have anything against it, unlike the spirit wardens, but if you feel cautious, it's not a worry, we can put this one on the back burner, we are actually doing the prison break job instead. Doing that first, yes. I don't know, it just seems a bit odd, that's all, it just seems a little off. Again, I consider her a friend, so I don't think she would lead me down a path of ruin, but I just feel like there's a little bit more to the story than she's letting on, but perhaps it's just the fact that this particular demonographer is that she said was of a specialty that was beyond her powers, just don't know if we should take her out of her word, that's all. Well, over caution is rarely a waste. Right, and we'll use abundance of it in this particular effort. Okay, that's the end of my scene, unless there's more. Well, as we leave, I have a question with Breyer, as we're stopping away, I kind of whisper to you, why was that ghost in pain? We've fought with a lot of ghosts before they were never in pain. It's supposed to have vowed so many, and they were screaming in pain, so I don't know what you're talking about. Right, while you were eating them, but I mean, there were others that chased after us and got in a fight, and there was no pain. Oh, it's the method of their summoning. Some ghosts are manifesting themselves due to the turbulence of the ghost field or access that are being provided to them. There are so much I need to know about spirits. Yeah. You would think with my name I would know more. She smiles and laughs a bit. Yeah, I mean, you can punch them. That's a good start. Hey, Jim, I got a quick question on Tesla, and I just don't know if it was made apparent or if nobody knows, but when her soul getting booted and her rejoining as far as she know or anybody knows, is she still the same or did something happen there that has not been fully resolved? There is no lingering harm on the character sheet. It is an ability that she was basically teased access to by this demonographer in an attempt to when excite her enough to give him some leverage. When we share this information with you, which we probably share with everybody in our group, we tell you that afterwards she seemed to be perfectly fine. There was nothing wrong. Yeah. There is no lingering mechanical effects to what happened. It was a brief manifestation of a power she could come to possess. If she still chooses that path, gotcha. Or that the ghost could perform just said to be aware, maybe we should be careful with that. Can have our spirit. Absolutely. There has never been in the archive of echoes any history of this having happened. From Tesla's point of view, this is something that's deeply troubling to her in the sense that there would have been warnings associated with this bottle. Everything has an index and appropriate notation. This did not warn you of such. Right. This ghost has been holding on to this. And I just keep saying, there's so much I have to learn about because apparently me as well. Yeah. We could do XP now and launch our score next session. Yeah, certainly a bad idea to launch the session right now, launch our score now. It's just to experience. I agree. Sorry. We didn't actually complete one. We were on a good clip for most of the adventure. That's good. I wasn't mad. I think we got some some good story beats in there. Good character development. But I'll do crew first and then we can start with the youngest. So tabularasa. Execute a successful accidents, murder or disappearance or ransom operation. Not during this phase, contend with challenges above your current station. I would say so doubly. It could have blown back bad with the iron hook contact. He could have been compromised from his bosses and do you grow the crit. So double six, baby bolster your cruise reputation or develop a new one. I think you're doing that. Let's hit that one degree here. Express goals drives inter conflict or essential nature of the crew at least once, yeah. There was debate about if Parker should be freed, what you can trust him on basic morality things that are always plaguing your group with that, no level up, but a decent amount of XP next character. You're just a challenge with technical skill or mayhem. I had some argument earlier that made me say, yeah, I don't have to worry about doing any more of that but I'm trying to remember what it was. He set up the tea party, but I don't know if that's mayhem. No, that's definitely a background in heritage and what drives beliefs heritage. Yeah, I remember that much. I was trying to remember what I had in mind for checking the skills in man. Hmm. I can't think of it. No, I think it was when I was getting ready to do research about the broadsheets, I had some plans about how it was. Yeah, we were going to do the broadsheets together and we both missed out on that opportunity because of the the ghost I had in my possession. Yeah, we can hit it next session. It's not too weird. We weren't doing a whole lot in this session. My character was mostly involved from a role playing perspective. So none for that one. You expressed your beliefs drives heritage or background, that just stops all over that today. Yeah, it's double. And struggled with issues from biases of trauma. I had no issues. It was a nice day today. It was a good day. So too. I'm just fine with that. Yeah. All right. That's good. All right. For Tesla, you addressed a challenge with knowledge or arcane power. I certainly drew the spirit out through arcane power. Yes, you did skills. You expressed your beliefs drives heritage and background. I did do a lot with Tesla's background regarding a lot. I think you hit it. I think you do. I think it's at least one, right? Or did you think it was good? Two, because you're dealing with Sotara, who wants in payment to address your hand. And that's been a thing. It's been a drive. So I think two. Okay. And then you struggle with issues from your advice or traumas. I didn't, if I were to eat the ghost or sniff the ghost, Elias, maybe I would have got a point there. But I did not. And no idea with this opportunity because of your advice. I don't think so, because there was no harm from you being expelled from your body. Exactly. I got a new offer, a new temptation, if you will. But I don't think I did anything for that. It was me failing a role was what caused it really more than anything at all. Yeah. Okay. So three. Yep. Okay. Busy, I think is next. I didn't do much deception, but used my influence as a spirit warden to try to gain information. I agree. And it complicated your life. So go ahead. One for that. Belief strives heritage or background. Not sure if I tapped that. I think you're an angel girl part of this plot to get our boy Gordo in side bars. So I'm debating if we wait till you actually do the thing or if we hit it now for that. I'm going to wait for next week on that one when you actually do the arrest. Yeah, and as far as struggling with issues for your vice or traumas, I just have a question on the is the only way that you could heal any of the damage you take is through downtime activities. It does go away over time or anything. If you can come up with a way on a score to indulge a vice, it can happen. I've had it happen in sessions. It isn't super frequent. Yeah. Try to figure out how to get rid of my limping leg wound and what's for damage, actual damage downtime, isn't it? Usually downtime. Yeah. I don't have a problem before the score. If you want to spend some money to consult a doctor, okay, doctor with a K. Yeah, it's a physical. I'm sorry. I knew it had me some kind of funky spelling for sure. So I'll type that down a note. So we remember. I can always have Dr. Noyberg here. Thanks me up. So just one really today. All right. Well, you'll definitely hit more in the next one. Sorry about that. That's enough for me to max my pronus out. Yeah. I did my prowess this week as well. Everybody getting the swole. I'm going to get finesse. I'm going to get skirmish. She's been practicing with her fine lightning hook in a room going through her paces of her battle training. Adrienne's thinking, take your thoughts and upgrading a special abilities because we could use a doctor at this point. So is that something you're working towards or something you've unlocked now? I'm working towards. I haven't put more points than one into insight and like. One of the crew upgrade abilities is when you spend a downtime action training, you get double XP in a certain category. You can say personal XP, in which case your special abilities, when you train them fill out double something for the crew to keep in mind. But there are those expensive ones that are very tempting. So just something to make you aware of that you can get better at training and level up quicker. That's true. Next would be ghosts Esther. Yes. And I was wondering when I die, will I be the ghost of ghost? Yup. Okay. You will be as long as you aren't incinerated and bellwether. Yeah, there's that. So the first one, which is you address a challenge with violence or coercion. I believe I did. And then I tried to hold the spirit that yes, I would say so, and I able to use your ghost fighting to help a friend. Can you also coerce a contact to help out Gordon? I was going to hit that for background. Exactly. What I was going next is that would potentially be a double one because it did bring up my family in addition to my previous. I have heritage and two points for that. Yes, it is your previous background and your hair to people, your roots. Right. And I struggle with issues or vices and traumas during the session. I would actually say yes, because I was definitely concerned about Cortland and her relationship with some of the issues we may be dealing with in the future that we were kind of focusing on this entire thing. So that does involve my vice, which is lately been with her. Yeah. I think you are putting yourself out on a limb here and it will probably get back to her eventually. Right. Okay. That's end of mine. Yep. Gordon. Yes. Gordon, you were just a challenge with stealth or evasion. That refused to join in, but I don't think that's the kind of evasion they're talking about. No, not so much. I think more so, your background, putting you in prison is kind of a spooky thing for the kind of upbringing you've had. Yeah. I might have some personal feelings about that that should come out, express your belief, strives heritage or background. I don't think I did any of these. Struggled with issues from your vice or traumas, yes, but again, I didn't mention it. It's like, I think your background is going to hit for this prison job. It's they're kind of relying on you who have always been the closest to arrest on the totem pole of who's in power, who gets thrown in jail. So one for that, it's kind of a nightmare come true. Yeah. Then the problem is I can see where that's exactly the sort of thing that no one else on the team should be doing for me. You are the best person and the one most likely to be affected by it. Yeah. So I'll take one. You will definitely hit heritage and background when we get into prison because you've got people there. Ooh. But for now, it looks like you've leveled up special ability. Did you not decide on what you want yet? I'm kind of looking at shadow, but I'm open to suggestions as looked at over again when I found out what I might be doing in jail, but I don't see anything that jumps out at me. Wow. I defer to teammates on that. I'm not going to GM PC you name yourself iron hook. Make it your whole game. I don't recommend that. I don't think it fits your character very well. Well, I'm looking at the ones that are just on my sheet, right for lurk. You see veteran at the bottom, let's you pick a special ability from another playbook. Oh, so that that includes that ability as well as whatever you end up getting. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. But that's a lot of homework to do. Yeah. All right. What do you have to do to get your fourth tick on your, it is a crew upgrade that is pretty expensive. I think it costs two level ups for upgrade points. So it's something the whole crew unlocks at the same time and has to be an investment you save up for. And then if you did that, the whole crew can do it at any scale, yep, any skill. All of them even. Okay. This has been KOTN blades into our campaign machinations. I've been your GM job. Thanks for listening. Good job. Good job. Good job. Close to the Kickstarter's in the back of the book, Sullivan, Sullivan oodle, fuck an Irishman. Always with the Irishman. They're always caps says climb again. I mean, they were flannicking cops. I don't know if there are currently, but they were actually one of your cousins. Yeah, one of your cousins and I don't know what to call that to me. Right. Yeah. I think it's a second cousin, but I think- That's what I was guessing, yeah. Or maybe first cousin once removed. I don't remember how the chart is that consanguinity goes. Never makes any damn sense either, but- I think we're removed, you know, the generation thing. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Step away for just a second. No worries if you guys want to go ahead with Gordon's plot, you know, I don't think you need me for it, so. Children in peril is always a good thing. What's that? Children in peril is always a good thing. Can't go wrong with children in peril when you're looking for some dastardly devu you've done. Right. I would say- That's not bad idea. That's bullshit. Sorry. I can't- Why was there a duck? And that's my timer to say put this burning stuff in my eye. It's at 10 o'clock, so. Okay. I did hear a duck. There wasn't a duck. That's close. Okay. Other possible titles that were available for this episode on the Facebook Nights of the Night fans page were Thinking Tinger Thoughts, looking for Demonographic Shaped Murders. You were one of the good blue coats. I am a ghost fighter now. There's our mission to get one demon and it's manifested inside of me.
