All right, back to RPG time. I believe that we left off with Dally and the Dwarves perched on the edge of a ditch…. gully…. gulch? Well, whatever it is, we are about to peek over it and see what’s or who is making all this noise.

Actual Play: 25:26

[Music] Hello and welcome the Knights of the Night actual play podcast. This Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition part of Flames was written and run by your DM Mike. And now please enjoy episode 247 titled "Kinder Jensler DM". Actual play begins 25 minutes 26 seconds. [Music] Over on Facebook episode 245 which is is that how you wake it to work? They wake up full on the bridge. Luke G posted and said when our 5e game was running, our GM found another wild magic chart that had our wild mage rolling a die 10,000. Bring you one of those. Yay for digital otherwise you'd have to roll 4d10 and apply a place value. We had fires all around us turned vermillion. We had her head rotate 360 degrees with no apparent damage. We had her vanishing upon the next time falling asleep. She went astral while sleeping during that incident and we've had apparently nothing happened several other things. The wild magic uses a tide of chaos constantly mostly to give the GM an excuse to use entertaining wild magic charts. And the GM uses it a lot to give the wild mage the option of having advantage on their rolls fairly often. As do pre-gens for other games like Champions World of Darkness and such, where character generation is time-consuming it's pretty necessary and a game. I also tried to create a large number of pre-gens and have them flexible enough so that you can use them as end PCs if you don't use them as PCs. You seem to look into the way these guys do things. I think he's talking about the character generation for the encoded design people, the patreon they're doing. They probably have tricks that I haven't thought of. So thanks Luke. I want to know how you come up with 10,000 different ideas. That would actually be difficult. It really would. I mean just the amount of my work that would go into it just like saying okay no I'm saying that. The fire turns vermillion. You simulated that many. Three pigs show up in the middle of. I think it could come up with 10,000 room ideas now whether their quality would be. Somebody says the flames turn vermillion and the other guys are like all right give me the color chart. I'm gonna make 20 more right now. You're gossipy. There's a whole skeptical section. This is the shitting sub-table. Just roll another. This is a bad table to be on. We've all been. Robert B also posted on that episode and said the best way to wake a dwarf. Mention loudly that you're gonna make one of his braids in his beard shorter than the other. Yeah that would be very rude. This is feedback from the website episode 245. Is that how you wake a dwarf? And the feedback comes from Rogue S. And it's a novel-length poster where it's like let me just read it off quick. Game time was fun as always but I've enjoyed your feedback discussion this and last week about the merits and pitfalls of using pre-gen characters for fake games. It reminded me of two frequent debates I have with my best friend about convention games. The first and most relevant is to pre-gen or not to pre-gen. That, as they say, is the question. I will admit that making new characters is probably one of my most favorite aspects of any RPG and it can be particularly fun trying it out in a system I've never played which is oftentimes how I use my convention RPG time to try out new game systems. While making your own character gives you a great deal more investment in the game however most con slots are only four hours long and character creation can take 25 to 50 percent of your game time. I generally think that that time is more productively spent diving into the game even if it means playing with pre-gen. Fake can be a tricky exception since so much of your experience and even mechanics depends on your familiarity and investment in the character. I played in multiple fake games at origins this year and mileage varied with the pre-gen's with one notable exception. For this game the GM had pre-gen stats in the first three aspects high concept trouble and background aspect which gave us a good grounding in the character concept but we spent the first part of the game completing the last two aspects in the fade story sharing fashion. This added so much to the game it got us to not only invest in our pre-generated characters because we got to make them our own but it also gave us investigative connections to other characters and players at the table which can be difficult to come by at a convention game where you are conceivably at an entire table full of strangers. We quickly developed a more home game camaraderie thanks to our pre-game shared experiences and in just 40 minutes we were able to feel like we made the characters our own and had almost a pre-game game to build party unity before heading in. It definitely heightened my interest and emotional investment in the game and made us play together or against each other as appropriate in more interesting and informed ways. If I ever ran a convention fade game I would use this method. The other more tangential debate we have that I'd be interested to take on is regarding convention games in franchise universes from Star Wars, Avatar, Dresden Files and whether to use canon characters as PCs. No. I usually share the job that was a whole lot of no. I usually share the general attitude against canon characters and ongoing campaigns, canon conflict etc but I tend to think of convention one shots are the perfect exception to this rule. If you don't have time to make your own character getting to play Han Solo or Avatar Aang or Harry Dresden is a great unique experience. Characters are already familiar with and invested in the characters and you avoid canonical conflicts in planning a simple one shot. My friend's counterpoint is that as someone who is still a fan but may not know as much about it getting a universal character as other players at the table he feels it too it feels it's too much pressure to live up to the exact character as they're playing his own style. Anyhow love the show your 5th edition campaign has prompted me to finally crack my copy of the player's handbook and start reading up so I can follow along at home. I hope you're getting kickbacks. Cheers Rogue. Well not. But first of all Rogue I almost agree with absolutely everything you wrote there. There's a huge difference between playing at a table at home and playing at a con. The most evident one is that if you're playing at home you're playing in a long-term campaign and you want your character to go through a character arc. So to address the last point I would never assume to play any you know if you're playing Firefly I don't want to play Jane in a home game. Because I'm going to make my own character and I'm going to get into that character. But in a con in which I'm only going to be sitting there for four hours and never see these guys again. I don't know. Well I have a couple of views on this. I think using pre-gens for cons makes a lot of sense because right you know as long as there are certain game mechanics like for instance fate where it is incredibly important for you to have aspects that you truly believe in and understand. In which case then I would pre-gens a bunch of aspects and at least let you, if I had a list of 30 aspects. Especially for players who have never played fate before it's a valid point. Especially if your time is so precious and limited at a con I would think you know look I'm here to give you a taste and I'm trying to choose from here. Choose from here and follow but yeah when you take it home take all the time and we did. We took weeks to figure out some more stuff. I think that part of being at the con too is having more, a lot more characters to choose from than you're going to have players. Because if you have you know six sheets and five players show up that kind of narrows it down. If you have 10 or 12 to choose from you're going to find a chance that a lot better you're going to find something. It hasn't happened often but on a few occasions oh somebody has to play this character because it's important to the scenario. That being said I find it very distracting or I don't know what the word is. When somebody plays a name character like a Luke Skywalker I think everyone's got so much investment or knows about that character that if you're playing Luke Skywalker I'm like yeah playing it right. That's not what Luke would do to that. I'm saying I'm going to do it that way or and I don't I don't think I want to be the driver of that. I don't want to be Luke and I think everyone knows those characters so well and has their personal view of those characters so well. I think that would be a distraction and ultimately a disadvantage to portray it whereas if you're who might say what your character is other than we're in this universe and we follow these rules but your version of whatever it's like okay well that's the way you are and then I know I'm interacting and discovering with you with the feeling. I don't like the idea of playing canon characters but that's me. We also have an iTunes review of Mike's covering for me because my throat's going and my voice. Okay it has a great title like a new pack of underwear five star five star by inspector but with a one where the eye goes that's clever um okay like a new pack of underwear how so well when you first listen it seems strange and new they have custom intro music that they legally use editing to cut out extra table talk and custom sound effects too no not constant sound effects just enough to remind you that someone there has put on headphones normalized the levels cut out the noise and put in the effort to make an exceptional podcast and that's all Tom diligent wait what about the underwear while new undergarments feels strange for the first time you put them on you also find yourself digging through the drawer later looking for another pair from that latest package when a new pair cannot be found you sigh and grab one of the old ones because not so that's funny to be not because they are bad but because they just aren't as nice thank you so he's looking for our stuff and when he can't find herself he can settle for other on their own for someone else well I don't think I've ever been compared to underwear but never so positively yeah that favorably not either way actually I'm thinking of a promo pick where we don't show our faces but we're all in a new pack you're well new underwear you know what's up it's in some strange place not say Japanese he sits down he says I need to review my favorite podcast how do I how do I make people understand underwear somebody got a new pack out hey I tell you what if you're finding something that everyone can relate to it's underwear except for those that don't wear it but they've made the choice they know for those weirdos clearly don't listen to our podcast no because they really have dates and that brings us within one episode three more reviews to a hundred episode 246 which was our clockwork dominion interview Kevin B posted and said normally I'm not a huge fan of steampunk settings as I think they've been ruined by the dearth of just stick gears on it type games but this sounds like mechanically like a really cool idea and I might try reskinning it a bit more towards the call it the through or a more industrial fantasy type game I am sold exactly what I'm doing seven well we'll discuss that in a minute I already posted as well and said awesome an awesome palette scrubber for the on episode and man what I love to hear the nights tackle this game I'm gonna ain't I please pretty please P.S. the spoiler teaser at the end Tom edits nastily I mentioned yeah anyways we'll talk about that later as well I think since Ari has so very nicely we should reward him and let and run a campaign at least I want shot if nothing else as if you want going to do that although I was going to make Ari feel better in about a year or so yes Luke posted as well and he said I think I posted on the wrong link which he did he posted on the link that I put the Dominion link to the too long didn't read version sounds cool reminds me of my own issues with publishing and GMing I wish that I was in the States making convention rounds and I want to buy this game do it with that I left the actual feedback at home so we might have missed stuff we'll get it next week this week John is rather sick so please excuse any coffin he does during the episode I believe he gets better in a few episodes and the rest of us get worse so with that I'm great new old people get sick oh boy oh man you are so fucking dumb lead with your chin there buddy yeah I'm gonna lick it I have this with a very cool upstairs to be the stink distracted with that we will thank all the patreon members anybody using the animals on links as well there are people using it I appreciate it but I do want to talk to Scott and Michael really quickly about kind of the cob last week yes yes Michael and I were there for a lot of games and we played fiasco yes we also played feng shui too yeah we played sort of f-thing yeah feng shui yeah let's go there was an f-thing no well third game we played was dungeon world in which my daughter and son played as well and my daughter who is 20 played at Troggdor the burn the the burninator from the strong bad emails she's like one against 20 I didn't know what you were so confused about with the look over there no no because I'm like you were in grandpa was our test it was our 10th year anniversary this year so it was been 10 years since she insulted you got that going for you my knee and it still lives on if you like remember just if it was yesterday so often you get owned by a integral girl that's like well I guess divide put on you as well Megan and Mark both played evil characters and what's an interesting dungeon world experience in addition that's when we actually did the interview for clockwork dominion in which we spoke with Zeke and then he ran a comment session for us afterwards so we could get a taste of how the game works and I have to say that I was really impressed both with Zeke's ability to give an interview on the spot and do it well yeah he knew it's mike michael said very well he knew his shit and he did and as well read and it's a little labor of love he obviously loves that whole game that he created the whole setting the whole yeah and he talked about it like it started like in the early 2000s so we're talking probably you know 15 years of of work that went into this it's a baby but I don't know if anybody heard the episode mike you might want to listen to it because he talks about the fact that he went back into victorian era and found a bunch of things historically that were this close to steampunk and then pushed him a little bit into that so a huge amount of the book has stuff that's one step away from what really was happening or as he said taking two extant technologies that were real and then just having those individuals meet in a way they didn't think of at the time i mean if you read any of the history of that time period or even like plus or minus 50 years and the industrial revolution and the technologies and even the the the the social impact of of what this does to these company or these countries was really astounding i mean even like the the race between Edison and Tesla and electricity and whether alta vin current or direct current i mean some of that stuff is borderline steampunk but there were other components of the game that you would really like for instance he definitely gets into the social graces in the courts and the fact that you could have a social combat in which you lose face and it is very important not to lose face but to give one more notch farther these guys are into fencing and sword fighting and their combat deals with the fact that you have to get somebody's guard down first before you could do any damage to them so there's an actual it's really intriguing the how there's a polite way to chop off someone's head oh if you use like it i think what the exam is if you took um i'm sorry do you want to know i was going to say it's so reminded me of um when in firefly when he had the guy in the ground this is you know a better man would i'm not that good about something that books am i good all right i'm all right i think one of the skills is like grace which is your dexterity their version of some type of of dexterity and fencing if you're doing because there's it's all about you know it's victorian so there's formal duels and right and if you were to for instance use the pilt or the the pumble of your sword it would be granger plus millet but exactly but you're you're right online you would it be a faux pas of major proportions so not only what you win the battle through your use of unconventional tactics but you would lose it kind of remind reputation it kind of reminded me too of that old monkey island where the way they had sword fighting between pirates was you had to insult the other guy because you could actually use can you lose someone's guard but yes yes absolutely that's what's going to ask and you can absolutely use verbal attacks on someone to get to get them flabberg acid and have flustered and their guard go down there's a lot of them heart well you're describing also in japanese culture yeah and someone's performing seppuku and you have your second to chop off the head it would be insulting like you're supposed to draw the cut and leave uh flap a skin to hold the head so it doesn't roll away which would be insulting and therefore you would lose honor for doing it that way you know you but this demonstrates your control and your ability so all that that kind of intricacy is a lot of great flavor and it sounds like he's found a way to make it also one of the last thing is the mechanics which i thought were amazing with the cards because i missed it because the way it works is yeah i was i think i told him i said i'm like it's done to get here i know but the way they do it is to give you four cards or if you have certain skills you might get five cards but you get to keep three of them and i did look at the the way the distribution goes the fights have the least amount of them both positive and negatives there's a it's a there's a positive and negative four and there's one more of those and then the threes and there's one more of those so you're more than likely to get cards that are in them like a one or a two or a zero but you can get up on the higher ends on the other ones that's these are the cards you get and then you act based on that number or you have the option to act you can pass so we're as a highest number both around the table but if i have the highest card and i attack you you could turn over one of yours to respond to me so i get through attacking you get to attack back someone else can flip over two of their three cards to say wait time out i go first before anybody else and they would be the shittiest cards you have but you could jump in giving away two of them taking away two of your actions to jump in and take some movement so you never you never have somebody sitting there going my turn to home for six more turns i'm gonna go order some pizza have a beer and i'll be back in an hour you're always glued to the table because you can interject you can interrupt at any time yeah i was like that that mmm yes that could be interesting the amount of yes both socially ends uh now that's with the combat how do you how do you incorporate movement as as any situation on our internet isn't very similar you know you actually have different actions it's a movement action it's an attack action and a maneuver maneuver which you could aim and then your attack actually would mean it actually shoot but as far as movement goes it's very fate-like in my opinion oh you have zones right you can basically control ten feet around you is your zone but there's other things you can do as well like we do sometimes in fate where the bar is a zone and then outside in the street is a second zone and then your parking the lawn is a third zone away you can do that or you can do zones of control within these areas but there's also if i'm attacking you let's say i'm attacking i have the highest number and i attack you with a knife but you have a sword my reach is shorter than so if you're reacting you actually get to attack before me even though i had the highest card because your sword is going to hit me before my knife is going to get in but that's because i'm aware of you what if you were right if you reacted right if you reacted or had the ability to react so if you had no carbs left then you couldn't even react or you don't get cards if it's a surprise round only the people who are not surprised admittedly it's the cards it could be a little crunchy it's a pretty thick book i haven't read it all but from what we saw i liked it a lot and certainly want to kick the tigers on it one of my questions was how much of that book is what we would consider player manual because i know he's got gm stuff in there and he's got setups and all kinds you have tables and stuff that you don't necessarily need you can't use it all for any given adventure right exactly yeah i didn't have a good feel for what that was like you know the first three chapters were the world building part where he kind of builds his victorian age you know his version of it starting i think on that i want to say it's the fourth chapter it could be the third it's the physical the social comment which is where i'm at right now reading it from the book that i bought at the convention and then i'm hoping to get into like the skills and you know like you said character building what's going to distinguish you from everyone else around the table and how is that going to differentiate i'm kind of excited to get to that part as well and i know the last part of the book is more of a dm section so it's it's all together in one book it's just a beautiful book there's there's it is it's 330 or 340 pages it's i'm really looking forward to giving this system a try i got a special copy because it's all they had left and uh it was thicker paper yeah thicker set here today a higher pound paper um which takes the ink a little better than signed by the three people who co-authored the book cool is that here today um it is here today kind of take a look at it you may take a look at the germs all over it it has germs all over it well i mean sometimes you'll see something i kickstarter and they talk about and the author's all excited and then you try it and you're like but i don't know i liked it i i think you can make like an online game of it if it's all kind of card-based so you can kind of make your choices and then running that you know execute the the choices it might be difficult to draw because everyone draws on the same deck mm-hmm true that but i'm sure you could you kind of make an easy tabletop simulator that kind of uses the deck for resolution as well and there are things plus similar to fake points like papa rays like if i pull a minus five on it and i'm like oh shit come on really and then i can spend one of those points to pull another card um yeah so you have some control over the the destiny at one of them yeah it's called what was called start with a peek i can't remember the other one was ether remember that i think it was ether and um was it push you know what it might be cool is if you if you conducted that kind of combat or that kind of uh mechanic on either an airship or a sailing ship and kind of control your zone or movement environment so you can focus on interactions verbal interactions and common interactions as you do so that's one of the things you mentioned is you had to move uh airships were not available at the time you had to move them because you got airships right if you're doing Steve Buck you got airships anyways we don't want to do the interview all over him right no it's certainly worth listening to i think uh because of his encyclopedia knowledge of the uh the era and his system so uh yeah real exciting stuff it was one of those where if you knew i was excited about it right we kept on talking about hey let's get together and do a combat let's get together and just see how it plays right and i kept expecting to be really disappointed and be like uh it's not really in schools i thought it was going to be but i ended up leaving the table and leaving the show yeah like i really want to run this now i want to put my own skid over it but i want to um i want to run it that's i phrase yeah all right with that well a lot of everybody get onto the episode and mike is running fifth edition heart of flame adventure for us this is mike your DM for the heart of flame campaign starting on my right is and michael playing vantish bodeck the hill dwarf cleric and member of the rune hammer clan i'm jim playin thaden of the rune hammer clan uh mountain dwarf fighter father artisan i'm tom i'm playing dally a level three steampunk sorcerer and tinkerer adopted daughter of thorough rune hammer displays refugee living in rock ball jim scott playing dane rune hammer scion of the rune hammer clan third level paladin of the god torn waffle good in sentiment and conflicted in action this tower's playing burrow of vaguely the rune hammer clan third level fighter mountain dwarf experienced soldier john playing the kirth an illusionist clanless ex criminal adopted into the rune hammer clan who got sick during our adventure it's the storjous it is the storjous he blew out his voice doing the dragon take toast man draw actually i think you can just start from running so much he pumped magic through his voice to make a drag oh yes clearly yes of course before we start and look over the edge of the road into the ditch or gulch whatever the appropriate term will be everyone should learn for the last session 200 experience with a bonus 100 experience for dally nice job for the spells and interactions with the mysterious owl that could speak some of you should still have some inspiration but i will add two new names to the list both to dally and band tesh for their actions that they took let's get to the ad now before we begin the action does anyone have any questions yeah why are we getting to the action okay very nice is a gully it is a gulch i want to call it a gulch i think it's more dwarven i think gulch than gully or luckdulch a steep slope down from the road you've looked over into it and you were hearing a terrible noise of grinding stone yes that right and you look over what you see is it's a heavy wagon wheels and a wooden bed and drawing the wagon is this what appears to be an enormous stone goal and this let's see the terrible noise of grinding stone comes from the large stone goal and that flounders in the deep crevice or gulch off the road it appears that the goal is hitched to a heavy wagon the wagon's axle is broken and twisted in a way that has been preventing the goal from writing himself and praying movements and it is constantly moving and trying to write itself and it cannot what the listener don't realize is the excitement that was on her face as soon as you heard goal of cock it just looked like a dwarven wagon you know they're lower to the ground i mean you'd be able to tell something typically this is one of the transport or food wagons as delivering the goods generated at the terrace farms and gliver two rockfalls it's obvious that it slid down this gulch judging from i mean yeah it's a kind of a narrow part of the road is that there's not a road down there that he's stuck in no just no it looks the wagon clearly has been damaged you can clearly see that one of the axles was broken actually can i get a perception roll from everyone please 17 or if you have been investigated i would also i'll accept it the hell of it i totally can't even touch my first roll on the baby day nice on the baby dashal 20 okay well we're just gonna go with van tesh as the elder and he seems to know exactly what he's looking for due to the lack of beasts of burden you have turned to other ways of moving heavy gloves so again don't go home isn't out of the well right and it's not this one isn't really uh designed extravagantly it is it appears to be broadened around like almost like an animate boulder it has a wide flattened head and it is powerful but simply carved arms and legs it kind of looks almost like an earth elemental like because it wasn't built in the village but on the farm instead like simple carbon craftsmanship couple things that van tesh also immediately picks out and i'm sure we'll share with the rest of you he's quick to notice with his excellent role in perception that the golan wagon have both been scorched by fire and appear to be damaged also by some kind of corrosive so there are holes or potmarks eaten into the stone of the golan and the wagon the wagon also appeared to be full of a grain shipment and a lot of the bags and the cargo on this wagon have burst and have kind of scattered around in this gulch it smells pretty bad and you can kind of tell that you know insects and bugs have kind of gotten into it a little bit but with this golan thrasher on all the movement printers haven't come along in heat and stuff there appears to be a leather satchel draped around the thick squat neck of the golan is it normal for these things to be programmed to just go and deliver stuff and not have a handler or a living person with it golems typically follow simple as far as you know unless you want to roll up an arcane or roll but the general knowledge is that you understand golems to understand simple commands or simple chores or simple tasks but i understand that i'm just saying like typically coming into and out of the city our autonomous golems sometimes bringing stuff in without people being in their over a million stuff if i understand what you're saying they are given simple tasks or commands but you don't really think of them as autonomous they do not do things by themselves so they're handlers usually somewhere you would think yeah or i'm sorry yes typically there's a handler or a guard or something along with a shipment that went up and on the road it's the teamsters union they'd be all over the daily roll the 19 so in our canis plus three so she rolled a total of 22 just to have a general knowledge on how these things work and whether or not the golem is damaged it appears that definitely the cart is damaged the cart is definitely damaged the golem doesn't appear to be malfunctioning no the the golem appears to be functioning it's not going it's not going haywire okay for lack of a poor term repairing the wagon wouldn't allow the golem to get out of this ditch and is dally sure that the golem isn't going to be dangerous if she tries to approach it the golem is does not seem to be aware of you guys yet the golem is not thrashing about like it's going crazy it's simply trying to write itself right it can't because it's hitch it's like the way it's kind of jack knife kind of like that i meant more from the arcaneral her understanding of how golems work okay does it happen like a wounded animal no does it act like no it doesn't like a robot no it it's given a command and performs this function literally to the best of its simple ability it is not capable of judgment of decision outside of its i don't want to say coding right but it's parameters however because you rolled an arcade a roll you also notice in addition to the satchel that is draped around its front there appears to be a clay tablet fixed to its back and with that our camera roll of 22 give me knowledge on how these are typically programmed is it the satchel is it something on the back is it the satchel just looks like a worn leather every day the whole piece of gear and in fact it's kind of odd that it would have a satchel however the tablet on his back is that normal program golem says you let's say you rolled over 22 22 golems are given commands and how they're given commands takes many forms the person who created them either has a ring or bracelet or some kind of thing to control however because of who you are and what i like to do kinker with things there's something familiar about the clay tablet that but you can't quite place it yet you feel that you probably need to get a closer look but there's something intriguing and something oddly familiar about that what you're seeing from up on high in this ridge and i asked if repairing the wagon would allow to know what you say when you say repairing the wagon okay the wagon looks like it's beyond field repair man i think shit what levels that spell it's actually a cantrip the spell repairs a single break or tear in an object you touch such as a broken chain link to have sort of a broken key a torn cloak a leaky water skin as long as the break or tear is no larger than one foot in any dimension you mend it leaving no trace of the former damage so it could fix a shadowed axle but if the wheels are also broken you have to cast well i cast it multiple ties but as a cantrip so it's not a big deal to cast it i mean it doesn't cost other time which is a minute i'm also a stoneworker in a carpenter i have a proficiency in land vehicles which is strangely relevant i mean i never planned for that to happen it was just one of the things you could pick a soldier and i was like i don't know we might get a card at some point we are the spell can physically repair a magical item or a construct but the spell cannot restore magic to such items where's our priorities you want to bring this back to town with us here go that's my question we're in a hurry here i would say just examining making sure there's nothing valuable or useful in it as far as that satchel or anything or or scene who way laid it in a meaningful way is this how it will take us how deep into the gulch my question was is the broken wagon preventing it from getting out of the ditch because a one-minute repair can allow it to get out of the ditch the hitch from the wagon is currently the leverage from the broken wagon and the angle is preventing it from being able to ride itself so so it's not far away it's just no i would say uh depending on how well you i mean you guys are are good at your doors so you're good at mountain climbing and dealing with the earth and you have ropes and stuff like that it would not take you very long to get down and it depends on how well you roll when you um climb up and down and i would appreciate if you can roll a kind of self it was magical alchemical or some kind of monster the fire the fire and the acid and uh well the dragon was it fire acid i never said acid i just said some corrosive all right sorry i was assuming acid because ferro sure as fuck doesn't know anything that's corrosive who says that's a set of water in the time i really don't want to waste any more time we have to on this because we are in a hurry remember what our mission is here to be like five minutes or less that we can spend that time fighting this thing does that seem reasonable calls with one card if we're getting anything i don't think we want to we might come back and get it it's going to be here when we get back isn't it kirk looks a little distressed about the current attitude about the golem and he says you know if there's like wounded and stuff we might want to get a cart to like dragon back and it's going to be really useful for that we could make a card dragon here there might be a cart there i'm just saying we should set it on his way let's get on with it get this done just tell him to meet up with us there i am uh leader is spoken i'm scooped down let's go get one other we're going to keep guard while the rest of you okay good thank you i just want clear direction so i can respond so i'm going to be doing gillick and being gillick and ventish are staying on top well not necessarily on top but we're covering in the manage area yeah okay we're surrounding it who is going into the car okay so tell me how you are going to accomplish that also deli i don't know we find an anchor point put a rope down in case there's a landslide while we're casually walking down this hill there are trees around you still so there's plenty i would say of anchor points you all i'd like i have rope somehow yeah you all have adventure packs on use which i believe come equipped with rope is this dangerous to go down no no i was mostly difficult to get back up you've been climbing these mountains all your lives so it's just that we can't drag the wagon up right yes the dragon is i mean it looks like it's an enormously heavy and rugged and sturdy and damaged so it seemed to deli that the first uh point of operation to be move the stone tablet from its back to stop it from moving around uh the way you see the stone tablet the clay tablet on the back it seems to be part of the golem not necessarily hanging or attached to it it's almost like a but you need to get probably closer unless you have it's not the goal then do i need to make a roll to get down you need to make an climbing i believe is athletics with strength base so yes so i'm going to say a strength-based athletic strength yeah you made it down okay 20 fadons the first one down all of a sudden the golem stops and it's flat heavy head swivels and locks on to fadon cool and it reaches to the satchel that's around its its neck and then pulls it off and holds it out towards you and it's just like staring at theta and cool and now that it's seen you it's you know looks around sees the other dwarves and then resumes locking out of you i'm gonna take the satchel uh watch out for if it tries to kill you after you took it that's good idea you can handle yourself but a big thumbs up over my head daily go to coaching the golem daily roll to 10 to climb down going down as i said is easy you do it a little less elegantly than you'd like but you basically achieve that result okay and you can also have the worst comes to worse right yes i can okay so fadon and dally are down on the ground kirth are you going down to yeah oh kirth very nimbly in fact they don't even need the rope it's like down the shelf yeah he just rolled very low i catch him don't worry i'm also very skilled at athletics they're all a total of nine which isn't great but it's serviceable going down i think so as burrow is going down and some of the rocks slipped from the deepest feet and kind of ends prone at the bottom of the gulch i turn on clap pick the shit up thin don't shoe laugh at me where are you oh dally giggles dally i expect them once please look at the magic shit okay so fadon is you get closer you see that the satchel is a standard well just a typical leather satchel but you also notice that it too is scorched you're a soldier so you've kind of seen this look before it appears to be stained with dried blood you now have i've taken the satchel and then the golem just kind of lowers its arm and just kind of sits there return to the farm kirth says return to the farm but the golem does not move or does that respond oh you don't have a command bracelet gem fit to send kind of examining the contents of the satchel you open up the only thing inside the satchel is it fits into the palm of your hand and it's a small clockwork contraction dally dally was looking at some way to disconnect the golem from the wagon so you can kind of see where it is but based on the leverage of it it might be require a strength roll to try to unstrap or on which the wagon to the barrel so i look at the clockwork and the two warriors look at the part let's just get the cart out of the way do you guys want to work together or you want to try it single-handedly working together towards it all about friendship so you find where the straps are are hitched up to it you can cut away at some of the straps but you find the main pitch and you just think like either a good whack of a hammer or a good exertion of muscle and you should be able to twist it out of the way and release it that just shows down hit it with a hammer i got hammer i will hit it is your hammer magical yeah actually it's supposed to come all but it's basically a big hammer okay do a strength track and i'm going to give you double whatever your magical bonuses and hammer to effect the strength or give you a challenge however you want to do it advantage sounds great that's much better 18 great whack it with a hammer pop the pin out and we're all good yeah so with three yum bang bang the last one snaps the pin releases it and the cart shifts almost rolling back onto you and causing you no random damage but you are able to step away and the golem is now unfettered and stands up onto its two feet but remains motionless there dally you want to check out the little clockwork gizmo cuz maybe you want to figure out how to actually work the golem's screaming at it while she's checking off at this clockwork contraption real quick i'm going to go just really quick through the the contents of that thing any food we can use that's easily curiable with most of the food that you see are bulk goods they're not grossed out but and most of it you feel it has gone bad yeah like i said anything that's usable so i'll go guys we're plenty sure stuff otherwise we'll just leave it okay so i'm going to dally who is looking at this contraption and it's actually pretty sizable for you and as you're looking at it could you roll a uh an intelligence check of i guess this would be arkina 13 okay inside the satchel is a small clockwork contraption you can tell right away that this contraption has been damaged it looks like some of the gears and some of the plates and the cylinders of it have been kind of bent and twisted obviously with the golem thrashing around it looks like it's been damaged it looks like something that was hastily put together and you suspect it has some kind of communicate something to do with communication or message but you would probably need to repair it to see if it has anything to say okay dally takes out her backpack sets it on the ground and the bottom of it is a small boiler that she uses to power her steam tools she stokes that up a little bit and gets her little tools out hey no playing just gather it up and let's go she's casting a fucking mending spell takes a minute relax but i mean yes dantish oh there is one more there is one more thing dally does recognize no craftsmanship when she sees it and this is a gnomish contraption oh this is my wheelhouse you're good to go that only takes her a minute and it's working so she casts a spell mending no she knows her steam tools right here at august so within a minute all of a sudden dally is just focused and she is here this little ting ting ting ting ting ting ting ting ting ting ting ting ting ting you know and all of a sudden you hear the thing to start to kind of whir and clad her a little bit and while some of the damage seemed to be irreparable you are still able to get it to function and there's a clear switch to turn it on gotta turn it on dally what if it's a bomb dally throws the switch i throw the switch i'm in and she hears she hears it a little and a little tinny kind of voice it says help and then like kind of garbled you can't really understand it i found her attacked by a dead red tribe soldiers ambushed by sorcery only garrison left going to vault and that's all it is dally relays this message to vantash okay now is this something we know that outlying farms usually have a safe house or a vault that they hide in jillig would probably know gillig not here when vantash hears the word vault he gets kind of grimfaced he's always grimfaced or even more so maybe a little pale now because what a vault is to him and very special wasn't there a vault in the direct and spine mountains there was or there is a vault in there right in the high reaches of the pyro there was yeah okay i just wrote that down right i want some bonus points better for the farming community at least it's like a fallback position a panic room or a safety room where you can a bomb shelter yeah it's a shelter but it's a shelter of last resort so aren't you glad we took the time to find out we should hurry so glad not so much now kurt you're looking at the goal trying to get to a bay now what part are you looking at you see it's just standing there are you just going to examine it yeah i know i'm going to go around look at the uh tablet on its back okay you are literate correct i just want to make sure it's the firmware the clay tablet has a single sentence written in simple but sloppily drawn dwarfish it reads delivers satchel to dwarves of rock fall by the way this clay tablet when you look at it you'll notice that the clay on it still appears to be malleable all right i wipe the clean the tablet is also kind of bordered by magic arcane symbols which you would not recognize it there the context not really the content right and you the thick hand you just or use your main chain to do this here's my skin your gift hand you kind of wipe the the clay slate so it's it's now blank again and the goal of this kind of it's kind of settles it just kind of settles and resets itself a little bit awaiting okay return to terrace farms okay wait instructions all right so that's what you've written how are you are you ready with what my finger okay your mage finger sure all his fingers are his mage fingers i don't want to be close to him when he gets this instruction so i back off a bed and what language you stretch out the mage hand waters okay just yeah what was it written it was written i write better dwarves than that but okay so in surprisingly delicate and precise letters kirth writes what you say which is return to terrace farm and away further instruction the golem starts moving out of the gulching climbing up and heading south we follow it well i think we should do something else we might be able to beat it there listen to kirth hey wait wait it's already moving oh wait you can catch up to it yeah i'll fix that when we get there cold bay kirth oh i'm sure this will end well so what speed is it moving it they move at a slow but steady i mean it's a walking we can bypass it it's a double time yes but dally hangs on to the back of it and just has a carrier out of the pit because sure it stops sure that makes sense it's finding the clearest way out and if it's walking along the gulch but it's eventually going to it's heading back towards the road so it's moving of its own power uh should we roll to get out of the stitch yes you're gonna not dally i'm hanging on to the down ride the goal map screw you guys well if you guys want to roll in 11 to get out of the ditch okay you're able to slowly deliver if i may wouldn't time a rope off to go down wouldn't that count as an advantage going back up yeah it's a simple roll you have to roll over a tend to oh i know i mean i don't get two dice two dice oh i think because they have a rope they tied up what kind of gentler do you know sure that's a good point wouldn't i got out anyways yeah you're you're ready next to this you're going to do a style points wow it's not it's not um it throws me no i'm starting the rule of bob okay good i have plus five several total of twelve barrow with his knowledge and skill even though his feet and in strength they'll seem to be uh making it but he climbers up out of the cultures yeah i remember i had the last night's watch before we were like fuck it we're moving out that is true i'm a tired warm curd can i climb out of the coach yeah you're not going to ride i can catch a ride yeah if you want to ride it well i mean macho nothing it doesn't have any hand holds on it you have to like hop onto it's back i suppose or okay i'm glad to go on them with me how about or we roll it or something i don't like it's parts of the uh um but whatever was attached to it still attached it's true yeah the strap is still on them he's kind of trailing this that's true that's e-nages they're just much smarter than that yeah sweetheart right eventually we launched them a stumble we just ride the golden off very solidly and steadily the golem comes up out of the gulch and onto the road dally and curth are just holding on to the straps that are still attached to it and they're just basically being pulled up effortlessly burrow and thaden both climb both their own strength out of the gulch the gulm is now heading south at a steady pace and i would like everyone to roll a perception check for me 12 12 natural 20 12 we got a natural 20 here so well i like it that dally was i got this because you hear like on the startled squawk of like a bird high in the trees above what's that mr bird and you look up and trying to see something man-sized flapping its big wings and rapidly disappearing into the distance away from me it wasn't near you guys but you kind of look up and as you see along the tree line up there something big leathery wings what would you say man-sized mean dwarf-sized? human-sized human-sized okay we'll reveal what looks like a reptilian humanoid bronze coat scales and it's flying away rapidly you can only feel it we're here can you tell us what this is yeah i don't know what that is like when you say flying away flying away in the direction we're going there can be flying with the direction we're towards the front i tried no not sturges i tried best to describe it to everyone in case anybody might know what it is because i sure held on well there's shelter in life now i think you you think it looks like a dragonborn but you've never seen one with wings then you know what a dragonborn looks like sure it looked like the size there was one that came to town and they stoned him to death but i saw him before that i threw one on the rocks but you never see one with wings well they never lived past the hundreds so you know maybe once they get there that's it's interesting bit of minutia let's go all right no you don't understand remember the owl lady who was watching us mm-hmm this guy was watching us too okay so he's not so friendly i don't think maybe he could just be sure she could have got tired of the owl could be a druid just got tired of the owl i think druid do like animal things they don't do like people things i'm having this conversation that's very awesome yeah you guys moving right here marching i'm right i'm riding out of gold it's probably slower than us you're eating while you while you march you guys have done that before that's an old soldier trick um i'm not so good at that but ride on a go on and eat your food well you didn't bring the wagon so it was just fine because time is the essence but we're going to just move ahead farther south here i'm not going to make you guys go through all the hours of travel that you still had to do because you still had about four hours of travel but what i will say as you get lower and lower kind of you're coming down out of the mounds into the hills again and the forests around you are still fairly thick and tall but you begin to see areas that have been cleared logged out if you will so you're starting to see signs of of habitation gala estimates that an hour outside of the farm you kind of crust this rise and you can kind of see the upper plateau of the valley you spread out before you it's mid-afternoon and you begin to smell the faint odor of smoke thank you for listening tonight's of the night actual play podcast if you'd like to send us questions anything off the show i have an operation dad has to perform a ricola bob had long dance landing in here i was talking about operation like yeah i i it happens a couple of times when i get to it or is that the one you read it's probably just yeah it's a collar ball like i want to damage it you just want to hear it right yeah isn't the one you dove in the outfield and broke this one i dove and i broke yeah oh there you go i don't know i am i'm jinn well i'm going to play for succession so you're only lordy something you didn't remember his name not as character mountain dwarf fighter father artisan sentence finisher are you are you down with the character frase speaker uh i sentence finisher are you are are you down with the character frase speaker oh that was done last week why did you gilly gonna be here no he's not feeling well okay so i'm hey i leveled up i think is it what 2000 750 i did not level up at all not even close just give me an update i was gonna ask because i'm at 2100 and so 600 to go and 21 oh what does that happen i missed one week and you guys got like 600 more than i did how much xp was it today i wasn't it was a battle first i was 200 i think we should just like all right mr the only battle no wait a minute i think we should let mike talisman me level up since he's got all the points written down do you know them all yeah i thought 2101 it's on that because you started at 901 i'm just asking yeah yes okay wait a second where was it where was it and so i'm just without doing the garble part i'm just going to give you i'm going to say one more time just to be clear help farm under attack by and red tribe soldiers ambushed by sorcery only garrison left going to vault it's the storm cellar anti-m anti-m type of it smells deep okay no i'm gonna say that fucking that's from the analogy is bullshit you're using a spell slot so if you cast one of your oath spells it's just using your spell slot for that spell doesn't give you any additional casts per day it just gives you more choices got it all right i had to look that up on the internet yeah i would have assumed once per day so thank you for looking that out see if you got 20 people playing someone's bound to roll an actual 20 or well that's my drink that's not mine that was really really warm not as the last time bling i am talking about last time because this is gonna go in front of that but thank you podcast magic oh goodness thank you let's just start finding the things that i thought it was doing i'm not i'm just doing the night this is the feedback okay okay good night we're
