Actual Play starts 11:26

[music] Hello, and welcome the Night to the Night Actual Play podcast. This D&D 5th edition adventure, "Heart of Flames" was written and run by our DM Mike. And now, please enjoy episode 240, titled, " Weapon Maintenance Is Its Own Prayer." Actual Play begins 11 minutes, 26 seconds. [music] Okay, let's start feedback with a quick apology. We missed an episode last week, and we may be missing some in the future. We're really short on content, and it seems it'd be difficult for us to get together. We will definitely be some of us at the QCC in two weeks. We will pour lots of back walls. Well, hopefully, yeah, we might record some playing sessions there, but we'll definitely not be playing this particular D&D adventure. And, but onto the feedback. First of all, go to our blog, kotmpodcast.com where AlphaD posted and said, "Hello, Knights. I haven't left much feedback lately, as I've pretty much been out of the Facebook for quite a while." I might have become one of those rare people utterly tired of the Facebook. Just to say, I'm liking the tone of the campaign that's being set. So far, it's been treating, and it's pretty straightforward, and it promises a lot of good old exploration and ass bashing. Ass bashing. Ass bashing. That's, yes. How do you course like that? You looking, um, not a man? [laughter] It's all tall and worthless, right? Looking forward to the first fight. Wasn't it Greg who he said when his character was a dwarf and someone else was that they were tunnel buddies? [laughter] Yeah. Yeah. We always go right to the lowest kind of an ass bashing tunnel buddies. There's, yeah, four more years. Now, over to the email at kotmpodcast.com. Jonathan, I posted and said, "Hi, everybody. I just wanted to write and say a quick thank you for putting your podcast up. I've only found it very recently, but I've been really enjoying it so far. I plan on ripping through your archives in the coming weeks, but for now, I just started listening to the fifth edition game. I've really been getting to fifth edition myself over the summer so that the timing has been great. In the past, I've more often played New World of Darkness." Hey, we play that too. The details you're going into developing your characters together is something I've not done to the degree you have anyways, but I find it very cool. I do have a quick question for all of you. Are you playing in Cleveland? I've recently moved back for a new job and couldn't help but notice that the Ohio map you used for one of your games. I believe it was the New World of Darkness, but I could be mistaken. No, actually, you're cracked. If so, that's great. I just wanted to give you extra props for being from Cleveland. I have... We need that. That's a rare statement. I have some sort of challenges. Yeah. It is a magic time here. Every day is shut up. You don't even live in Cleveland. You can say Mr. suburbs. Actually, we live in the suburbs. Yeah, barely. Close to the kids. I take so far. Every day. Do any of us actually live in Cleveland? No. No. That was very close, but I'm going to... I don't want to live in Cleveland. No. You were. I have lived all over, but believe it or not, Cleveland is amongst my favorite places. That doesn't take a lot for me to believe. I love Cleveland. It's easy to make fun of, but... Wait, what were the other places? That's true. Detroit Detroit. Detroit Detroit. Detroit Detroit. Detroit and British Prisoner. We're out of San Artico. Yeah. Moulogz. Thanks again and best of luck to you and your adventures, Jonathan. P.S. if you ever need another player, feel free to write. Oh, I was wondering when that would drop. There it is. Well Jonathan, while we'd love to have you, let's see, how many we have sitting at the table right now? Two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Eight of us. Eight in Rachel's taking a campaign off. Yeah, yeah, Rachel's up. I hate this. But if a comment ever strikes and we always have a group, somehow some people have recruited. Half of Cleveland drops into the lake. Right. Oh, you never know. Life events do change. I mean, it wasn't that long ago when we just had four or five, you know, showing up regularly. So it changes. And some drift off to college. Mm-hmm. Over on Facebook, I posted a picture of Dally. And Wayne J posted a picture and said the artwork is awesome, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit that hit girl. And that's the, uh, played by the actress, Chloe Moritz. There's a picture right there. From the movie "Kitches." Just cute. From the movie "Kitches." Mm-hmm. Are you 11 years old? Was the first thing that came to mind. I don't know. No, no. Remember. All of those are 11. No, no. I don't look very young. And to be fair, that wasn't the picture he posted. I thought you were 300 of those. That is exactly the picture he posted. Yeah, he posted, not you. No, I did not. That's what I'm saying. That wasn't the picture you posted of your character. The picture I posted is this one. I'm actually not. Yeah, I'll pass it because it's a little older than a lot to see. Robert B also posted on the picture and said I got a feeling that there's going to be a lot of, let's see what happens when we mix this together and let the chaos ensue. I don't know what he meant by that. I think it was the gnomish, uh, artist. Oh. Artificer and the fact that she's mixing stuff together. We got really an alchemist who's a tinkerer. So, over on our Facebook main page, these are visitors posts. And it starts with Steve E who said there are some posts to the main page that show up on the left. Do those get seen as they are not part of the episode? Steve, I only have this to say, not always. The reason the fan page was started was because a lot of things that people other than us post on our page gets shuffled off into this dark abyss, which is seldom seen. Does it mix in the main timeline with Fred? At all? No. It gets thrown over. Or it does when they first post it and then it disappears. It's really, really bizarre. So, the reason the fan page was put together, and that wasn't my idea, that was Jason McDonald, was that when they had questions or comments on it, they stayed active. You know, if they have their own place to talk about stuff, that those things are the main focus rather than the main page is just announcements by us. And everything else gets shuffled aside. And it doesn't work as well as the fan page does for a community-type feel. Discussion is in particular. So, over on the Facebook main page was some additional posts, and we'll go through those. Corey and posted and said, "Hey, don't know if you guys saw this already, but I knew Scott was talking about going back to new manure campaign at some point, and they've got a kickstarter up for a few supplements that go into space and deep down in the ocean. Could get real weird news. Yes, keep an eye out for it on a drive-through RPG. Well, actually, it's currently a kickstarter, but yes, it will eventually make its way there right now. Let's check out kickstarter then. Is that new manure or strange? New manure. What? Good question. I don't know that. Stevie also posted a picture that was of the gnomish athletic department, who's a t-shirt, and to that he said simply enough said. Under episode 239, Pope of Rocks, Sean W. said, "Just taking a break at the end of cinneters, I've caught back up again. I hope everyone is doing well. I'm enjoying the fifth edition game so far, though it just started really. Something that was mentioned, which I want to throw in my two cents about. I've long enjoyed both World of Darkness and D&D, though they're quite different, and soon I'll finally be getting in a game of fate. Crunchy games are nice, sometimes, but I like having a variety. However, I've discovered that after listening to other podcasts that crunchy games are not as much fun to listen to as they are to play. The number of rules can become messy for listeners, and luckily, the KOTN crew puts the focus on story first. Also, it helps that the fifth edition was pretty simple combat rules for D&D, and it doesn't bring the pace to a halt. Anyways, very intriguing story so far. Reminds me of a setting I was trying to get going. Sean W. So thank you, Sean. Thank you. Thanks. Adam, Adam, posted and said simply John Wayne was from Iowa. I responded to which Mike responded and said John Wayne is no idiot, and I withdraw my uninformed comment and apologize to all citizens of Iowa. Except for one. Except for one apparently that he... Of course, who I was originally... And I was trying to be representative of Thursday. Is this still out laundering around? She... She... Oh, god. It's like that Zilin Hitler had a baby. (laughing) Luke Jeep posted and said for the toolbox you could look at the Artificer Wizard archetype. You could probably adapt one of its infuse works by a temporary sacrifice that spells slots to create an item that gains a bonus or can be used to create X spell. And he leaves a link to a PDF forever on. While I appreciate that, Luke, we already have rules for how I'm going to deal with the tinkerer, but it's fine suggestion. Yeah, it's good for other people who want to try it. He says no, everyone wants to rewire it. Before you even try to play it. Yeah. Let's see, how do you plate us? I just want to try this straight up. It's a sore story, right? It's just window dressing. Yeah, it's just flavor that you're doing it this way, but... Not changing anything. Later, Luke G also posted and said crunchy games with veteran players can still be fun to listen to. Once everybody has the crunch, second nature, it's easy to focus on the story. It is with lighter games. That's very true. But we are... I think there's so much time that passes between games that no one can actually become an expert at our crunchy games. You know what I'm saying? Like we come back to D&D and it's a new addition. We go to the world of darkness and it's been three years since we last played the story. I got to learn it over again. Yeah, kind of. But I mean, it's a correct sentiment if you play back to back to back. Yeah, if we were doing... Well, even in that case, it's working in spite of the rules rather than... Right. ...the rules helping out. I think, you know, not to say that it can't be done. It's just, if you start out with a system that's built more for that, then... Yeah, it's easier to get there. Lastly, Adam, I'm posted under this episode 239 and said, "I'm going to mention that the toolbox is more or less a component pouch in this skin of sorcerer." But I see that Luke is already throwing down a solid magic item enhancement option. Looking forward to more story? Don't let us down, Mike. Cool. But I know you want your... Well, let's be honest. If any one of us is going to let us down, it'd have to fall down my shoulders. No. Okay, you're... But I know you want to join the world revisited skin on the adventure. Hard to argue with a world with history, even if we don't have it all. So thank you, Adam, and thank you for everyone who posted feedback. And of course, thank you to the Patreon Donators as well as those people that are still using the Amazon link. We appreciate all of the efforts to help keep the podcasts afloat. And that Patreon shit's nice. It is. It surprises me every time I look at it. And with that, we're going to turn the reins over to Mike who's going to get us started in our 50th Eve adventure. All right, hi there. I'm Mike, your DM for the campaign, "Heart of Flame." Starting on my right is... Michael playing the Bantish Bodeck, a little more than a cleric of Torm, that got a courage and self-sacrifice, a member of the Runehammer Clan. I am Jim playing Theiden Runehammer Clan member, fighter, muck north, still flushing out the character. I'm Tom playing Dally, a level 3 sorcerer, tinkerer, forest gnome refugee, and adopted daughter of Thirl Runehammer. I'm Bob playing Gillig Runehammer, a level 3 ranger of Torm. I'm Scott, playing Dane Runehammer, a paladin of the god Torm, of the god of courage and self-sacrifice, a member of the Runehammer Clan, and that's it. Thomas playing Barrow, the dwarven fighter, part of the Runehammer Clan as well, but I have yet to side on the last name. Whoops. John playing Kirth, the rogue wizard, ward of the state, in general, nerdy well. Okay. There you go. Okay, so last time it had been an official gathering where many rumors and stories and updates on what was happening in the realm. I was going to communicate it to everybody. The biggest news is that the dragon that has been terrorizing the valley and the mountain areas here on the edge of your kingdom. His name is Corignus and he has been slain. Also, dozens of warrior teams have been dispatched from Stonewall and Rockfall to go forth out and secure some borders, begin repairing the bridges and roads, and basically begin the campaign to recover some of the dwarven's lost lands. Oh, another big issue was that a warsmith for the first time has been announced and that was given to or elected to Bronson Ironbeard who is part of your rival clan. Boo. Boo. But we're all one big happy family here working together in this society. So while you think that perhaps the Runehammers or any other clan could do better, you're not necessarily too happy with Ironbeard's taking over. And then there was also the issue of the eventual repatriation beginning, moving the threshold off of the outside of Rockfall and that has had an impact on some of the people. So these are all the things that have happened last night. One of the first orders were received to send your group south to go check on some late shipments from the farmsteads. Very important job. Well it is very important. It may not have the same. And army marches on its stomach. That's right. So I am going to start with basically the morning after. And as we can go around we can maybe ask some questions or clarify where maybe you guys were doing, but it's two hours before dawn. It's very early. Some of you are recovering from the night's festivities. You have gathered outside of the massive stone gate and you are on the main road that will head southeast and take you to the farmsteads known as Terrace Farms. You know right now that the farms are approximately one day, or at least they had been, one day's travel to get to. So you expect to be gone for at least a day to go check out these farms. And these farms are in the lowlands. So we are going down. These are lower. You are going to be heading a little bit farther south than these. So yes you will be going down. And there is very little open land that you can cultivate in grow crops to help kind of feed the growing populations that you have been dealing with these past decades. So a major, it's actually quite a beautiful feat of dwarven engineering and stonework and good old fashioned dwarven know-how. That they carved terraces into the mountains, built areas for crops to be grown, greeneries and homes for the families of the farmers and the farmsteads to live. It's actually been almost the bread basket of your area. It's a major source of food and. Yeah. Yeah. Oh that's, thank you. I'm glad you brought that up because you have to have your brewery. So it's also, also part of a brewery where a lot of the liqueurs are built. So Dali's someone who gets up early and she gets all of her stuff ready and throws it in a backpack and then goes and checks on his hammer because. I don't have any hammer. You know what I mean? A great sword or a halberd? So what is it that you made a decision? Oh which one of the two? I'm going to pass you on. Think of maybe the great sword. I think it's going to be a standard weapon that halberd will be something that he'll use in certain situations. Right. But I think the great sword is his bread and butter. So is it a ride that Dali created his great sword? Sure. Or in my handstand? In handstand in some way. But you know those softball bats that have like a weight that shifts as you swing it so that you get more power? Something like that. Or something steam-punky that makes it more, what's a lot of B plus basically just plus one? Is that the idea? It's sort of great. So she's checking the weights and making sure that it's flowing and fine tuning in. So she's ready to go. I have a heavy crossbow. Nice. There you go, yeah. Now dwarves are shorter but they're also heavier, stronger, denser. That should also be something if you guys don't already know this. Dwarves are denser than water. So we see the rock. I'm just saying that it's going to your swimming checks will be at a disadvantage. They can walk under links. Sure. Sure. It's an advantage. Well that's also one of the reasons why you're not tremendous fans of boats. Fuck boats. But. Because we're in anchors. Right. You're bad. At best when you're traveling a boat you're ballast. So do we need to go through equipment or? Yeah. I got lots of equipment. Dallas you have to get dancing. What are you guys doing? Well I would like to know. I don't want to skimming around looking. Where's everybody coming from? I would like to be clear and say that do you all have your gear and armor so you at least know your armor classes? Yes. Yeah. Do you know what your primary and secondary weapons are? Yes. Do we have steeps like wheels or ponies? No. No. Okay. Can I have a pony? I was in the military. You haven't seen a pony in a very long time. They all died. We don't need to pack it. We are packing it. We are packing. We're standing. I would say. We are pretty sturdy folk that are used to putting it. I would say that we don't fast but we can go for a longer time. Endurance man. Endurance. How dare you? I would say that Dane wakes up. He did not partake. He doesn't drink heavily. He woke up three hours before dawn or so and went to the temple of Torm. Okay. And definitely spent a lot of time both worshiping and praying for a safer journey and wisdom. Because obviously in the last expedition he let out there were a couple of dwarves that were lost in that expedition. So he's feeling the pressure at this point. He's feeling a bit uncomfortable. He's definitely praying heavily and trying to soothe himself with words to his god. And then I'm sure he probably meets up with Bantash. Actually I would join you there. Or I'd certainly as you but I do regular things there. Well they're doing the praying thing. Dally's like checking their weapons and armors because gods are fine. But the armor and the swords have to work. Does Dally have any equipment that needs hauling? No she has a backpack with a lot of stuff for spells which are her tinkering stuff. She carries a quarter staff which is just a walking stick and a dagger. Other than that it's really not a lot of weight. Dally is carrying a total weight of seven pounds. I'm sure I'm carrying like 40,000 pounds. Okay. Oh I forgot to remind you. I forgot to tell you that from last week's or last time's adventure you have. Everyone has plus 200 experience. Whoa. I'm on a case level. Do I get to be these? I don't know when the level. I got experience for what? Except for you. Well I'm not going to do that. I'm not going to do that. Okay yeah some of you are you mourning the dwarves? Do you mind the darkness? Do you mind getting up early or is it just another day of work? A lot of set of time to show up and it would have not have been much past dawn. Okay three hours from dawn Barrow is still awake. He's drinking and trying to figure out what these were in some of this piece of paper meeting. I don't know what I've been doing to pass this time between this meeting. I have a marching order of sorts if you want to try. Well how about this? They've been perhaps? I don't think I was at the meeting. You said a lot of the artisans and... A lot of the warriors were out there. So how about you say that your character who was a fighter and a warrior had been on either a guard duty? They'd be coming in from a patrol because he's really in the architecture. Okay great. So he might have been out just getting a lay of outside the land making sure all the walls and everything were start to leak. Then what will happen is you after a long week out surveying and... Scouting. Scouting and checking the architecture but also running patrols. You come back very excited to finally have some time off and maybe you can catch up on the gather. But as soon as you get in from your patrol a young dwarf from the rune hammer clan comes and delivers a message to you telling you that okay we're meeting up in a couple hours. So you have enough time to perhaps clean up, get some food. I think I also decided I have white pink kids. That's good. Okay you're a family dwarf. You're about to retire as well. Well yeah so you have your own, you have your own hearth. So that's important to know. Is she, do you want them to be involved in some way in things or are they just what motivates you and keeps you doing the good thing? Before we cleared out I had said that Barrow was looking for reports, more recent reports, on the farming community but he was still drinking so he probably hasn't actually read anything. When you say you were asking for reports what do you mean? Well you said that the shipments were like he was wondering if anything came in like we fully reports where they were saying. Also we have this problem that seemed really minor at the time but might have bled to it. He was however at the same time still continuing with the three kings so he might not have read any of those reports yet. Is this an opportunity to make you all something that's staying? Is there something interesting that can go wrong? Well actually yes there is that info gathering with your intelligence skills you can do. Do you have any info gathering or do you want to maybe use one of your skills and describe how maybe you might go forth to find some of this information and depending on how well you roll I can tell me how much to tell you. I have no trained skills related to info gathering besides perception but that's very… Then how about a straight up intelligence check? A straight up intelligence with a day twenty. A disadvantage due to drinking. No he's a dwarf. I'm not going to do that because you know that's like making elves not be able to run through a fortune. We can handle it here. That's crazy. I'm not crazy from that. I'm not crazy intelligent. I am wise but I don't deal with the system to get that out in the wild. Anyway I rolled a six with a plus one for my natural intelligence score. A total of seven so probably. Okay well you did over here something as you were kind of gathering a little stone plate and gathering food from the tables that a lot of the breads and cakes and pies they had to resort to some of the older winter supplies because none of the fresh grain or vegetables had been in in the past week. Usually they have deliveries at least once every other day but to go a week now which is actually why it makes sense that maybe you do need to kind of send someone down along to see what's going on. I have a tactical question. Then how do those deliveries happen? Do they use wagons? Yes, typically they have heavy carts that you have, you're old enough to have seen these. So yes they have heavy carts that are usually pulled by golds. Golds? Okay these reports I was looking for that I failed to find on my own. They're kept in some kind of a repository of knowledge right so there are scribes around. Can I bully them into finding it for me? This round you find you, you heard my homework. You heard the bakers and the people at the party over. So now I'm sorry so now what you're saying. I'm looking for any military reports, updated reports that they send in. If I'm looking at a repository of knowledge with their game of scribes who could find it for you or as you might not even know where it looked right now. Yeah well there is someone called a quartermaster who kind of keeps track of you know weapons made, armor made, sealed materials that are gathered and processed. A group of lords one of the other clans probably in charge of that but I'm suspecting that you may not have time to go hunt them out and still be where Bodeck told you to be. So maybe that's not the right time but you think that we'll look into that later. Right. I would say a Gilligan party a little too hard last night. How do you think Gilligan feels about possibly going back out or any thoughts on the dragon dying? He's really excited about that but he's probably hung over I think actually failed on having advantage and making a roll. Poison check I think he had us make. Even if you fail you still take only half damage to any type of poison check. The thing is that I actually failed on having advantage and I rode pretty crappy so he wants to be hung over. I understand but do you know how much you have to drink as a dwarf to be hung over? Okay and I did. Okay fair enough. That barrel really works. He knows exactly how it works. Okay so Barrow is looking, first of all Barrow is pretty ugly to look at under normal circumstances. Oh so hard. Right in. Oh and up here I'm sorry. I'm not so guilty. I'm probably also ugly but I'm not really sure. Yeah Gilligan is pretty scarred and then whatever but yeah he kind of stumbles in and he kind of sounds like his armor is like clanking like a bunch of pots and pans and gums and he just with every step he kind of hears just gums going off in his head. He hears every creak, every ting of his armor and everyone else in the area. It seems very loud and now I'm going to step out of the scene for a moment and just do some housekeeping things here. We're going to try to keep track of ammunition and gear and equipment and food. I'm not going to be a stickler right now for keeping track of your rations and what have you and you all should have enough money to kind of pick and choose your gear. But as we go if we get to a point where you're like okay you know I've got a backpack so I should have rope in it or I should have hooks and are you going to have a ladder and have a ten foot pull. I mean that's kind of just who doesn't. Yeah let's just kind of establish that right now are you taking explore packs you know as part of your standard gear you have some mounting equipment. You have a priest back in an exporter pack. Okay with the priest in that amount I thought about it. Yeah and they're also defined in the book if you want to look at precisely what's in there but I have pretty much the same thing. Okay also you guys have lived your whole lives or most of a lot of your lives in the mountains so you are familiar and it's very reasonable that you would have you'd carry rope you'd carry spikes you'd have clinicals and PFP tons thank you. Karth or Petins but he's spent the early morning emptying out every cash is getting had left in the city and so he's well armed and at the gate they all got arrested. So you spent the night going around emptying was it weapon caches or there were some burglary tools some rope this lantern with a hood on it there's crowbar. Okay some tons of ball bearings. Delly's kind of ill prepared she doesn't know it she's going to find out she hasn't been out in the wild lot she's got all of her tinker is stuff that she's ever going to need and that's what's taken up the room in the backpack. Like she has a spanner you know she has her backpack she's got all kind of stuff especially wrench right. But it's our his arcane focus that's right and I have seven days of food that's all she thinks she needs you know a little bit of water some food and all of her stuff. Great. So if it comes to climbing a wall it's going to be somebody else unless you can do it with her stuff. Scott chose a magical great sword and I don't want to step on his grill some replace mine with a mall I killed an orc for it and he would want to blood it against him in any way. No axe come on guys. I have two axes they're throwing. But still great axe. Yeah that's understandable. Yeah I think I do but it says hammer but I've pictured it as an axe. What is that hammer? What is Satan caring for? Satan's hammer. It's an artisan thing. Go figure. Get me a gift. Die hammer. I think it's a wall. I found a couple daggers short sword in this one. Not an axe among others. He's got a great axe. Oh he's got a great axe. Those fruit hammers. They don't even carry axe. What's wrong with them? They carry hammers. But what do the iron mutants got all the good kind of axe? Instead of a plus one weapon type plus one defense on my armor. Okay. Your choice was either an armor or a weapon. Yeah. I'll probably, I don't think I might have picked armor. Okay. In a bit. Just look for something. My secondary weapon was a war hammer. Marching orders. You begin to set forth on the road. You see in the distance. The pre-dawn. Since you're kind of high up in the mountains. Kind of start to see the sky brighten up from like a deep dark blue and purple. And starting to see the raisins and the sun come up. You see the entire vista of the mountains and lowering down to the hills. And I'm down towards the valley. It's beautiful. You love this terrain. And you're very eager to kind of go back into lands that had once been blighted by the dragon and reclaim what was your own. Did Vantesh have a marching order? Well I had some suggestions but I had Gilligup in front. And the way he sounds right now. I'm not real. Oh, fine. Fine. Go. The smell of the trees. The fresh air in the morning. The coldness. The Christmas in the air is kind of invigorating to you. And you are eager to kind of get out to where you feel more comfortable. Plus I want to find a natural remedy for my hangover. Like an herb or plant or something. It's a stimulant. Great. There is a... Your survival. That's a wisdom skill I believe? Yes. Okay, so once we get on the road we can do a wisdom survival check. And you can specifically look for... He's getting a little poisoned himself. Now he just knows that perhaps a strip of bark and maybe a couple berries do. It's hemlock. To detoxify you from a night of dwarf beer. He is smack to the side of your helmet. Damn. I'm better. I'm good, I'm good. So off you set and you begin now. Right now you are still pretty much in your established lands that you've defended successfully. So you have roads to use. You're still up in the mountains. So you have a lot of switchbacks. A lot of high passes. You have a lot of... If you want to go off terrain or off road that's going to be a little bit of a... It's going to slow you down. Sure. You as the trailblazer, you set the pace. So that's up to you. Do you want to get there fast? Do you want to get there unseen? Do you want to get there indirectly? Well, my favorite terrain is mountains. Very great. So difficult terrain doesn't slow your group's travel. Really? Great. I know pretty much the crack path to take there without slowing us down. I don't think any one of us would have a problem with that. Difficult terrain. Wow. The mountains. Traveling in the mountains, I mean, right? It might go slower, but... I'm not sure anyone knows about that. No, you are a drawers, but Gillick Raises is a good point that I've been all up and down these places for hundreds of years. I was born here. No, I wasn't born here. Oh, you weren't born here. I think you were born. It's born in the old country. Oh, on the other side of the mountains. No, the land where the dragon took over. Oh, like where the lair of the actual dragon. Oh, I apologize. Okay, yeah. Okay, that's right. You were at the other place. The howl go bald. Yeah, how far is that? That's on the other side of the valley. Hell of far. Something. Back in the day before the dragon, and you could use the roads, you could make that trip in two weeks. Yeah, I kind of wanted it to come from the... Okay. That's the land that the dragon took over. We had to tend to leave that land because the dragon centers. Okay, great. But I am familiar with this land because that was a long time ago, right? The dragon has been terrorizing this area for a century. So a hundred years. I have passed since you, a lot of the dwarves have been south of your immediate borders. Right. I am 330 years old. Okay. Have you said kind of a marching order or at least tell me? Yeah, well, I am going to run past everyone and see if it works. It's thinking of Gilligan's front to lead because he knows the way. And maybe that... We are not taking the golems. You don't have any golems to spare right now. You can't use a record position now. We are having a very minor mission. They are going there anyway. Golems. No, they come from there. They haven't been. Walking. Some of us peasants have to do it. So Gilligan first. Kurt's second. Maybe the rogue can help. At least not. And I am getting away. Is Kurt a malinger already? He's crying about talking. It was very sudden. Gilligan maybe he can keep an eye on him. Yeah, he touched my shit. I killed him. Keep an eye on the young Kurtz. You don't have to watch him all the time. He's young. I don't want anything stupid to book. He looks stupid. So, it's Gilligan up front. Kurtz second. Me, normally third, but I'm going to be wandering around. I just need to know I'm an approximate. I make my beat. And then Barrywell Theoden. I don't want Dane at the end. And Dane, you keep an eye on Daly. Oh, I would be orbiting around him somewhere. Yeah. Well, I talk to him privately and suggest that maybe you might skip and keep an eye on him. Oh, I am. I look at that tree. And as a mal, then you know that being behind is not punishment. We don't want to be trail-tech behind. He's the right. Oh, absolutely. The Vanguard. Right. The Bug Vanguard. Vanguard. Daly is a forest, you know, so she's glad to be out of the rock. Oh, sure. Out in the open. In fact, you would have affinities with the animals in the woods, right? Yes. Are you able to speak with me? You may. I'll believe that. Or at least I think you asked to secure why it's eye on me. It's clear to me off. It's just curious because it might be of an avenue of information for you. So, I'm going to make a quick guy nature role to find that hangover remedy. Okay. Do it. It's vitally important. Yeah. Does anyone see an issue with the marching artist? Nope. Okay. So, I have Gillard, Kirth, Bodeck, Thaden, Barrow, Dally, and then Dane. Yes. So, you said fourth, right now, most of the mountain area by you that we're starting out with has been long lived in. So, there's not really debris. It's actually kind of clean, sculpted. There's some beautiful dwarven architecture. And the stone gate and even some of the buildings of Threshold, even though their wood have still been assembled and constructed kind of with an influence of the dwarven city. So, it looks kind of nice. And in the quiet of the morning, everything is still. There are some high clouds. So, visibility is going to be fairly okay. And in this cold, you're still high up. There's also a lot of tall pines, tall trees. Some different trees that we could probably... Different varieties of pine. Yeah, different varieties that exist at the higher levels. I know that there's a timber line, but this is a magical world. So, I'm not going to get too crazy with it. And there's some plants and animals that are magical just from their name. You have grown up with these and you know of them. But you're heading up onto the road. And down in southeast. Now I'm following these magical plants. Okay, so, as you're going, it's not going to be very long before you are on the road. You're on a surface road. So, we're not taking any subterranean roads right now unless you want to explore that. Nope. Fastest way there. The fastest way there? Fair enough. That's the overland road. So, Gillig, as you're going and leading everyone, and you're kind of making sure that as the line kind of spreads out and gets into the rhythm of walking, you make sure that you're checking back behind in that the line's intact and you maintain contact with them. So, if something does happen, you can alert people. Could you please give me a wisdom survival role? Since I am in my favorite terrain, I get to double my proficiency bonus. Okay, great for that. So, that's not survival. It would be plus five. But I rolled an 18. So, 23. In fact, it grabs you even planted a few of these plants yourself in anticipation of future need because you have no problem. Yeah, that's where I did. Yeah, so, you find these plants and you start showing on them and it begins to relieve your hangover. I'm going to give some to borrow as well. Is that it? Barrow, borrow. I don't know. Well, you're meeting a tree. It gives some to him because he looks like he had a little bit too much drink. Well, that's nice. Well, that's for you. It's for you. Ask for us, right? Right to me. Well, borrow. Well, one nice 6.30, please. Two. Okay, you found six doses, if you will, of this material that will help ease your hangover. Your hangover. That road appreciates your hangover. I'll take two. I'll take two. You share. It's fiber. It's good for you. Makes you shit good. It's a tree. Moving on. So, tell me how far do you want to just like travel per hour, do you want to travel until like noon or do you want to like check every few hours on your track here? Probably stop for lunch since I started feeling like I'm going to be here. I don't know if anyone else is getting hungry. So, you proceed. The day gets brighter. It's actually going to be kind of like an overcast day with the possible rain coming up in the mountains and you know that it's not going to be good. The morning passes uneventfully. You get through to kind of high noon and you're making fairly good times. So, let's see if you start early in the morning. You've gone about 25% of the way and you stop. Do you want to stop or eat while you're walking? Do you want to stop and make a pretty short picnic? Camp or do you want to just kind of eat and walk at the same time? I think we can make a short 10-15 minute camp. Okay. Sorry. As we're walking along, Dally is talking to the local wildlife game. No useful information whatsoever. Except for Mr. Squirrel is in love with Mrs. Squirrel. But she's seeing this in so long. Is it a committed relationship with Mrs.? Yeah. Okay, great. She could be useful. She has no idea what. Now, Dad, before we proceed, does anyone have any questions? Are you walking on the Golden Road? We could go across the Golden Road. We'd be pushing the other way and we'll jump back in as a card. You are one lazy one. I've never been climbing. I'm not looking forward to this. If they come around, they have a big in shipments from them. So, I don't think we'll see any. If we meet them on the road, we won't have to have gone. We'll just follow them back. If the gimp can walk this far, at least you could keep up in the least as much as... Oh. Yeah. You're 200 years younger than me? You're not walking on your Miss. You're trying to keep up. No, no, no, force. He's the same mother. Yeah. Okay. So, during the break, I'm definitely walking around the perimeter of why everyone else is eating. And I'm eating, but I'm keeping a very attentive disposition to the wilderness around us to make sure that we're not ambushed where we're eating. More focused on looking for food. Dain is nervous and watchful. He rolled a 19 which gave him a 21. Nice. Okay, he runs a 10-0. He's very well trained to notice things that would lead to combat, but I don't even know if that's related. He rolled a 14 A.S. plus 6. Great. And this whole thing's new and thank you, so you rolled a 19. Then he rolls around, he may not need to be in a tunnel. Okay, so you hear the sound of more than one person, but you're not sure how many, but it sounds like a troop, an armor. Can we assume that we didn't park our asses right on the road? Of course. We're going off the road and I don't want to get further back and hide until we know what this is. Split the party half on each side. Imagine if you will, so there isn't any decline with heavy dense forest on both sides of the road. The road is very wide. It is at this point 20 feet wide and very long. And in this particular stretch, it's fairly straight as well. And you hear the sounds of multiple feet, and you hear the sounds of metal armor kind of clanking or clanking. Is there a light which we came to start? You don't hear that much. Thank you for listening tonight's of the night actual play podcast. Or a halberd. Halberd. Halberd. Halberd. Halberd. Right. Okay, just making sure. Halberd. Halberd. Halberd. Halberd, right. Thank you. Thank you. This is here. This is back at the episode goal. Did everybody pick their magic items? No. Items? Items. I don't. I'm sorry. Like the many people would be finding items. Uh, my war hammer is plus three to hit. Does that mean it's magic? No. No, that's a real deal. You're not a fire. But I- that's based on- Yours probably based on your strength and your proficiency. Oh, okay. What's your strength? I couldn't. My strength is a plus two proficiency, which- I'll figure it out. Okay, this is low then. Actually, yeah, your strength is plus two and your proficiency should be plus two. So it should be four. So it should be plus four to hit with a normal war hammer. Are clerks proficient? They should be- If it's a war hammer, it's a simple weapon, yeah. Oh, yeah. He's also a dwarf. And he's- What is Danes' magic weapon? I had to decide. I think being somewhat reckless as that being his flaw, I think it should be a weapon as opposed to armor and defense. You should have like a magic hammer that did fire damage or something. He has a great sword and a halberd. Okay. And javelins. So- Um, Enhanced it in some way, like- No, it doesn't have a flashlight on it. Shane's sword. Yeah, right right. Nice. It's a trick. One more. One of those. Hard? I think I have some upstairs in my office. No. I don't want to go that far. Okay. What do you mean? Close the nose. Oh, yeah. There's a whole bunch of them right over there. Yeah. I don't want to go that far. They're really- Why, you really just want to go far, dude. Hey, I am wrapped up. You're not feeling well? Your house is cold. Yeah. Yeah. No, a wise guy. A wise guy. That's arguably the best job in the army I've heard. What am I asking? You're in charge of who gets what and where. And then you always make sure that you get something to eat or you have ammunition. Right. It's your hands and everything. So. Yeah, that's true. I bet that is. Okay, so. Perhaps Dally can't- Perhaps Dally can't help but maybe think that a little- You probably put together a little firecracker here for you in a second. I might snap. John, I don't know what page it is and they really should have put that on these fucking cards. That's so 4.0. What are you doing? Come on. No, they're just a little helper. They're 4.0. I don't know. Okay. All right. Whatever it's off about it, I'll find it. I bet they should do it. Okay. They call me ugly and- Okay. Well, what are you looking at? And it's your face he's wearing? It's crazy. Something's got kind of a dark streak here. Mike. Yes. Speak with small beasts, communicate simple ideas with small or smaller creatures. Wow. There you go. I do. Hey Mike, as far as weapons and armor goes for your equipment, the heavier your stuff for fighters cost a lot of money, more than the 30 gold or so. As a warrior, you get- How does that work out? When you pick your class, you could choose a lot of starting gear. So you could have chosen- Yeah, that's actually sprinkled around through. So you look at your class. And in the entire additional equipment, in addition to the crap that you have to buy. Right. Like they say, you can choose a martial weapon and a shield or two martial weapons. I just read that so that I could make sure I was replacing a weapon I got rid of fairly. Yes. That's not real. I think as a fighter, you can start with a scale mail. I think- Are you heavy, right? Scale mail is the best you can choose medium-wise. And then I was allowed to choose chain mail, but I think I chose a penalty. So it was the amount of money I could get after. You really can't go for heavy armor though. Chain mail is heavy for some reason. Probably not starting out, but that's something you want to be working on. Yeah, chain mail is heavy. It's the lightest heavy armor. I'm pretty sure we're allowed to choose that. There's a chain shirt which is light, and chain mail is heavy. But if it says it in- I guess we can look it up and look it up for you right now. I have a heavy armor expertise and I'm sure where it was from if that's part of the- I mean proficiency in armor and shields, but it doesn't say- I'm sure it has equipment. You start with the following equipment. Yeah, chain mail. Here. That's what? Yeah, you can, yeah. So you don't choose one of those four. You choose something from each of those four. Yes. So you're going to get chain mail or leather, longbow, 20 arrows. And then you choose a martial weapon shield, whatever. And then a crossbow, a button, then a pack or whatever. So there's a fair bit of equipment there that should cover your bases. So you have your wisdom, and then you've already doubled it because it's your- in your preferred zone. Yes. And it's the total plus five? Yeah, yeah, Mike. It's plus five. He's not very wise. Yeah. I just want to make sure I understand. I thought you were- I thought it was going to be like plus eight or something, but okay. No. You may need that. That's what I keep forgetting. You're a great bird. That's right. I'm a good one. A road that is- while you're going down the road. So there's a- Incline. Incline. I couldn't say "glade" or "grade" and knew that wasn't right.
