[Music] Hello and welcome the Knights of the Knight actual play podcast. This Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition "Heart of Fire" was written and run by a Dungeon Master Mike. And now please enjoy episode 239 titled "Pope of Rocks." Actual play begins 19 minutes 35 seconds. Okay feedback. I went back home and found the feedback I missed from last week so now we're going to cover some of that and we're going to go over to kotnpodcast.com our blog site. The Dresden page Ryan A. posted and said "Hello Knights, I recently discovered your APN have been devouring over the past few weeks. So far I've gotten to both the Dresden File Campaign and the sin-eater portion of the Hunter. With the intent to move on to Sugar and Next. While I have greatly enjoyed all of that I've listened to rituals definitely struck a chord with me. It was an excellent example of both the fake system and the spirit of Dresden File's universe. Sometime your understanding of the rules is a little rough around the edges but you always find a convenient way to resolve any confusion you may have." I look like a front. I wouldn't at all. I know I don't know the rule. Well they're talking to me. I'm the one who doesn't know the rules cold and I agree with that a hundred percent a couple of times I fudge shit but it's the spirit of the game right. The story trumps this rules as our motto. That's a great, great, great thing but who knows. Over on Facebook on the KOTN page, Marianne W posted and said, "Hmm, here's a thought for the future musical episode. Instead of a whole episode, how about creating a four-minute dream sequence and running the audio through one of those free auto-turning programs or just maybe do some bloopers at the end." I kind of like the idea. It's kind of cool. Cheers man. Cheers. We'll take a look at that because it's not like t-pain. Yeah. Where did the idea of the music? I had no. I might. It's someone at the table might have mentioned it. Because have you ever seen an absolutely sure one of our fans knows exactly when it was probably said? Has he ever watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer? They had the one episode that was musical, a musical episode? Right. It was brilliant. It was one of the most incredible episodes. I love the ending of that episode. That whole dance routine by that demon, it's awesome. It was really good stuff and it was so- Daddy Dan by itself. But yes, it was a lovely dance. I think actually it's probably something that I might have said and it just ran with it. Yeah, it sounds like something I would say. But thank you for the idea Marianne. I like it. I hope we're not pronouncing your name wrong. John Wayne's real name was Marianne. Still on Facebook, episode 237, which was titled "Sorry" that was just a short little bit saying what other reasons we didn't put out a real episode. It was a sorry episode. It was very sorry. Brian D. Posten's "Hey, I don't know if you people know about this site bundleofholding.com. It's like humble bundle, but it's for RPGs, PDFs. And he left a language, of course, is "bundleofholding" all one word.com. And they have like, I don't know if it's monthly, but they put out like a bunch of different RPGs that you could. I actually think they had a traveler one. I sent you a link to it once night. Because I know you're interested in traveling. Just when they're shopping. This is legit free stuff. Not free. It's one of those sites where there's like a minimum amount and you get this and if you bit over the... I'd love to play traveler, but I just want my happy memories trash. I think you should stay to that. Sometimes you just can't relive those things. Yeah, let it go. I disagree. Well, I'm ready to rap on talking or... I know he can climb into his memories. We're not talking about erasing your memories and doing something new. You'll still have that. This is like part two. Go ahead. It's like a shitty sequel. Yeah, exactly. I can play games and fucks it all up, but I just have to worry about it. There's two never-room ghost bustles one. If we ever need a short history thing, I'll do a traveler to electric boogaloo. Since you said the bar is really, really low. We can fall right over this. We won't get outside of character creation because we'll buy a mill. You could shuffle and you probably wouldn't trip over it. The bar would be that awesome. We'll call it a one shot. Travel campaign, one shot. We all die from character creation. That'll be our April Fool's episode. We played traveler, but we didn't. It was to be the character creation. Well, that died of six. You and dad could not be them. There you go. So it both started and ended during character creation. Stevie! It's still on Facebook. Stevie posted and said this may be a little long, but it's not terrible long. But a short background is needed. If it gets read on the podcast, we used to have Rachel read it. No, because Rachel's not here and it wouldn't get read. So Rachel is taking a bit of a break because of her schooling. She's concentrating on her education. And once you read it in the voice of Rachel, I would do both Rachel and myself and service and her fans. Let's be honest. To return to the feedback, a few years ago, I ran a dress and fouls game in modern Atlanta. One of the characters owned the dancing goat coffee shop downtown. He was a potion maker and he tried out new blends on his customers. It all went well and we finished up the story. A few days ago I met with a few of the players and we discussed getting another dress and game going, possibly in the same setting. But they wanted a twist, like being sent back in time by accident. Sound familiar yet? I said nothing so far. The players of the potion maker is considering using the same character again, so I can easily see that the opening scene would be something like this. The morning isn't usually cool for a mid-July in Atlanta. There are a few early customers sipping coffee and munching on biscuits. The bell at the door dances as a girl in her late teens walks in and orders a small decaf. She sits at the table and watches the day brightened outside. Just then, with an explosion in the kitchen of various blends all mixed together, the owner comes running out waving his arms wildly. The girl gets on her cell phone and uses a speed dial labeled B-H. Here we go again is all she says. And as she puts the phone away, the morning light sparkles off a tiny silver bell sticking on the back of the phone. Mind if I use her as a catalyst in the Dresden game? I think I could speak for Rachel and she would say absolutely go ahead and use silver bell. I think if we ever get a reveal on who and what binary hex is, I think it's going to end up being extremely aggravating. I mean, it has to do with binary hexes. As opposed to what it is now? Right. It could be so smooth now. It could be such a big pain in the ass. I just, yeah, I'm just feeling that if we ever get down. It's you one another time. Actually, I did wonder if that was my future self being, you know. This guy's an asshole. I hate it. In which case, Scott would have maneuvered me over the course of years to hate myself. Yeah, I could buy that. World darkness. He should hear me in the drive over. Why do I do this to myself? All right, that's all the feedback we missed last week. So we're going to finish up with this feedback this week. Nice. And that starts with the iTunes review. The title was for those lately. Yeah, with luck, my skills will kill the feedback hour. So down to, yeah, John will be happy. He's also not here right now. High quality entertainment. And this was by midnight litch five star rating. I was introduced to KOTN by a friend in preparation for running my own game of drugs and files. The podcast has become a staple for me. The high quality production provides entertainment, great role playing amazing storytelling, and a great way to pass the time. This is an outstanding actual play podcast produced by people who really care. I can't recommend it enough. Why aren't we great? Looked up and Thomas is going mad. We don't give a shit. A lot of us cares a lot. The rest, that's all it takes, man. No, I don't think that's true because I think you guys as players put in an effort to play realistically, there's none of the, well, an occasional pubic hair joke. I like that Mike scowling a bit, but the majority of... It wasn't a joke. It was actually a serious thing. The majority of the time, it was just in files, so you were looking for somebody to trade someone. But the majority of the time, everybody treats it seriously as like getting into character and staying in the moment rather than throwing in potty humor or other things to just the cheap joke. That's an effort on everybody's heart. It really is. It was a mental lapse. I didn't think something through and I just went to the first thing that came into my head. We were in the bathroom and we were looking... I was looking at the house a bit of the early clay and you're thinking of one place that wouldn't have been this thoroughly clay. I was looking for sympathetic magic to somehow track some. I remember that distinctly and I thought I was here. I thought you were talking about it here. To track. Something like that. Yeah, he was wonderful for a hair. I didn't think about the hair rush. I thought of the first thought was not a hair rush for clubs. I know, I get it. But, if the house had been clean, there wouldn't have been a hairbrush there. So, thank you. It's way too much credit for my coming out. I wasn't trying to be vulgar or disgusting about it. I just wanted to move the story for it. And he did. All right, back to kotnpodcast.com. We had a return of this mitty. The mitty came back and posted the post that I deleted last week. I don't know if you're honest. So, the mitty came back and said, hey, long time listener, first time caller? I was just wondering about... Second time. Well, actually, yes. Second time. We deleted the shit out in the first time. I was just wondering about your choice to go five-e over some other fantasy system that takes more committed role-playing in the story over the dice and crunchy stats. Systems such as savage lands or a 13-age, which is a system very akin to aspects. Enjoyed the start though. Looking forward to the Black Company, a Glenn Cook style fantasy squad play. That's a great series, too. You are a fan of that. I know you suggested it for me. I haven't really ever gotten around reading it, but I will someday. Scott would like that too. I think I can do it like that. I think... So, why did we choose five-e over something that is a more role-playing type? This is a more number crunchy type. Well, I think five-e is supposed to be more of a role-playing effort. By don't you enjoy it, right? And... Ballot? I mean, five-e, I think, other than being tremendously popular, we were looking at the fact that it was supposedly... All of us. All of us. All of us. All of us sitting at the table, too. Yes, too. To an extent. A lot of us caught our teeth on back in the early 80s. Exactly my point. Everyone at the table has a history in playing D&D. Also, when we were deciding... When we were deciding to do it, I think it had the books that had just been... It's been one year, just about... Yeah, so... It was pretty fresh in our minds about, okay, the next game. Once we get through, then... And some of us got it as gifts for Christmas and something. Certainly things. I'm going to put them to use, right? And I think also that... Two things, I want to say. One is you need to break out of your rut sometimes, in a sense, that world of darkness is very role-playing specific. Dresden is very role-playing specific. Having a a story or playing in a system that's not as heavily influenced and nuanced in that area, I think it's good just to break out of your your shell sometimes. And the second thing is is, I think, depending on the talent around the table, and I think there's a lot of obviously great role-players out there, and I think this group is a set of them, because I think very highly if everyone at the table, and they're role-playing ability, we can make it as role-playing center because we want to. We can take before E and make it as role-playing center. Oh, you often do. As possible. And on that note, Chris from Miss Direct and Mark, in the latest episode, explained that we were playing Five E Wrong in this episode. I'll never before we did anything. Well, it was in the world, Bill, where we went on and on about the world, and he's like, "Just get the Dutch crawl into a dungeon and kill things." Right. But he enjoyed the latest one, which was our character development a lot, because we came up with some great ideas. John and others came up with some really clever ideas to tie their characters together and in Spark. Certainly gave me a lot of ideas and avenues and potential stuff down the road. I think he backed off a little bit about that. Because, I mean, he agrees too, if you're having fun, you're not playing it wrong. He was just saying, we're taking it in a direction that it wasn't meant to necessarily go, but it's the way we like to play. And we will play D&D like D&D. Yeah, it's going to get crunchy a little bit crunchy. There is also a different conceit in this case too, which is we're recording it. So, at least I am very aware that, look, I can't bring out a graph paper map and have us all pour over figurines and rolling dice, because that's going to make Tom's life extremely difficult. But we also have kind of gravitated more towards a descriptive storytelling. And Michael has even kind of encouraged me to say that, look, you can play it that way. And that's the direction I'm going to go. And we'll just we're going to kind of learn how to integrate that crunch in a way that's still engaging for the listener. I'm sure Chris would agree with that because that's the way he GMs. He's not all tied into, you know, measuring how far this boat just. Yeah, I posted his balls about it a little bit. I also said that the one reason we do it, well, we always go through a character development, a world first world building, then character development, and then we play that's our style. That's how we do it. It gets investment and buy in for the players. They get to put a little creation in it and they're more tied to it. But there was also the fact that we have no fucking content to release. Right. So, I might not have even released that world building one had I had another option. I did not. So, today is where it's all going to come to a screeching halt. Let's hope not. We're going to play long enough to get two episodes here. Back to Facebook, episode 238, which is the one just released. It was a character development. It was titled fondly tolerated. It was not about it. It was in reference to my gnome that in a land of lawful good dwarf, she's a chaotic gnome who is just very high in charisma and she is fondly tolerated. Okay. So, three quick comments. Luke G posted and said the steam punk reskinning of the wild mage sorcerer is cool. I've pulled a similar idea from my theoretic build on my site, including this one and included a link. So, thank you Luke for the compliments and that's all. Also, on episode 238, I already posted and said just saying that the area at the end of the gag reel, painful. I just finished listening at the office, clamped my jaw tight enough to burst out belly. I haven't seen this bad. Yes, I'm not going to make it so anybody could go with something. I want Tom Rocket posted and said don't cringe Bob. It's not about you. It's cool. Tom Rocket. Tom R. Sorry. Tom R posted and said slanted is not a god you want to be a pallet enough, but Scott can really name his character. Well done. It's like Dean room craft. It's a very rare anime. Yes. Rude hammer. Yes. Apparently you can't remember. I have to go with my folder but I can't get up until the last bit of feedback is from Mr. Merk T who said slanish is a chaos god of passion, access and sensuality, hedonism mostly. This is even a small entry on him in D&D wiki for purpose using him as a D&D top here originated from war hammer and war hammer 40k. Yeah, I was right. You're right. Scott playing a paladin of lost hedonism. God of chaos. Who's editing? Tom? Good. As for the session preparation, I was positively awed by Mike's preparation in the background of the story. Although I guess that he had a lot of it written and probably had a lot of interruptions cut out by Tom, still the final result is worth praising. Though it seems that he made lack confidence. It seems he was easily outspoken. He makes up for it in content. Cheers Mike. Okay. We'll try to be nicer and not interrupt because we did make like a couple comments like we don't need you as GM. We're going to design this. It is all a collaborative effort. I mean I'm playing the game as much as you guys are and that's why I don't want to over plan which has been my... I'm Mike your dungeon master starting on my right is Michael playing Vantish Bodeck dwarven cleric of Torm the god of courage and self-sacrifice a member of the room hammer plan. I'm Tom I'm playing Dally Ellen Nissa Tenda Sheppen that's all you're know she has a knowledge name I'm an omish wild magic sorcerer although I play it with a skin punk skin on it. I too have a member of the room hammer clan. I'm Scott playing Dane room hammer a paladin of Torm the god of courage and self-sacrifice of course I'm a member of claim room hammer I also have a background of torn as he is struggling to meet both his fathers and his gods calling. I'm Bob I'm playing Gillig a level three forward ranger. I'm Thomas playing Barrow who has no last name Torm's fighter level three like everybody else I have a soldier background. I'm John playing Kirth a level three rogue arcane trickster. There's about the multi-class into wizard the earliest opportunity. I am currently a ward of the room hammer clan under the patronage of Vantish Bodeck. One thing I want to discuss really quickly is the changes in fifth edition from other versions we play okay because everybody at the table has played D&D before. One of the things I found out about was inspirations which are a bit like fate point in that you get awarded inspiration and you can spend it in the game as a bonus or a you can also give it to other players so it's a new mechanic that is very different than any previous versions. So as I understand with inspiration what it is is when you do something positive or that needs to be rewarded in the game or you do an action that you use your powers or your class to do something that you're kind of meant to do or supposed to do I can reward you with inspiration and it's like either you have it or you don't so you always you can't stock it up so when you get it you kind of want to take advantage of it and what it will do is that you can choose to spend it on a roll or a check and you will get advantage on whatever roll you're doing. Also you are free to pass that inspiration on to someone else so for example if Gellig is if Gellig's about to do something and Dally wants to inspire or pass it on she has the ability to do that as well. Well you mentioned another thing which is advantage. In rolls here you have either advantage or disadvantage sometimes based on condition so instead of giving just like a flat plus or minus what will happen is if you have advantage you will roll two 20-sided dice and take the higher or the better roll or if you have disadvantage you will roll to same throw say for example you have a disadvantage to say magic or poison you would roll to 20-sided dice and take the worst roll and that is how that plays and there's probably going to be a fair bit of that as well and probably we should talk about resting and healing you have what is called a short rest and a long rest so let's say in between combats or whatever you choose to take a short rest they last no longer than an hour or two you're supposed to do relatively light work but during that time you can spend your hit dice in this case you all have three hit dice get one hit dice per level so as a fighter I believe you have three die 10 so if you want to heal some wounds you can choose to spend your hit dice to heal your wounds and the way it works you roll one die 10 in your case your hit dice one die 10 plus your constitution i'm out of fire so that would be your healing and then if you want to spend another to heal up you can heal up then you've spent your your dice your hit dice are recovered or you get them back when you take a long rest so it's like a die not all of them half of them are recovered so you need to take rounded down and what happens is when you take a full rest you get all of your hit points back and half of your hit dice back all your hit points yes you also get your spell slots back and after a long rest is a minimum of one hour spell and you can only do one more rest for 2020 the last thing is really quickly proficiency bonus anytime you have a skill you have a proficiency bonus the addition that you add to your proficiency bonus is based on your level so at third level for mine it's plus two i think it's plus two for everybody yeah so anything you're skilled in you're going to add the plus two and then if it's something specific like you're climbing a wall and it takes strength to do it you would add your strength modifier and your proficiency if you're proficient at it that's what you add to the dice right and other than that it's pretty much dandy as we played thousand times before okay in rare cases like i think rogues have this ability you can become an expert in which case i think your proficiency bonus doubles john you're playing a rogue yes an arcane trickster you get you get advantage in second attack situations all the time cause it's an additional rogue thing even with spells i'm not cool no i think it says with melee attacks the proficiency bonus also comes into play with with certain types of weapons for different classes for instance as a spellcaster i have it at quarter staff and daggers that means that plus two gets added for those things yeah that weapons you're automatically skilled as a or or proficient do you get both the ability score increase from being a dwarf and from being a some set of dwarf or one of the two like dwarf says you get plus two your constitution hill dwarf says you get plus one to your wisdom right yes you get both okay i didn't do that oh originally i was arguing why would i have an intelligence of 16 and chris mott 14 just because of my own i can't really adjust those so you can't floss which is what i was like i should have a chrismo of 16 that just makes more sense you can't do it because my highest role was 14 right did everybody pick up magic items we were a lot more i did not oh one magic item you may choose a plus one magic item of either a weapon or an armor my magic item is a little different it's a toolbox because my she's a little engineer tinker thing and she can transfer magic from items stuff and you guys understand that you have advantage against poison you know we're not all dwarves sucks to be you well the real course people are doing right i just want to turn up the light this is true you said magic items a while back yeah we established in mind would be this artifact i still uh that's what you had said do you want to change that or because actually you in a way you kind of transformed that almost to a multi-class well to a plot point so in a way if you would like i mean if it doesn't actually give you a benefit because magic gotta be sure when i um it's going to be my buy-in to multi-classing well and that's fine but i think it's become a little bit more than when it was originally intended because you had some good ideas so how about if you choose a new magic weapon or item to start with that's like a plus one my toolbox really doesn't do that either is there where you chose yeah i mean that's what we talked about briefly and i was thinking it would be cool for dally to have a magical toolbox that helps her do her stuff but is there anything they could give me like more spell points like maybe it does that as well i would hesitate giving you spell points just yet let's try to use it normally before we only have access to certain schools as a wizard of magic right maybe this book let's me have another let's not go with that for now maybe that i'm not even wizard yet so that's fine right i'm just thinking maybe that's what i get the school that the book specializes if there is uh if there's an object like a uh what simple wondrous item okay if there is a ring or if there's like a ring of protection that offers similar effect or to justify it i was just thinking something that you might want to have some kind of weapon or armor or protection to be honest i haven't looked at the magic items i don't even know where those are do the dms guys probably the dms guy look uh no brother do you need to do that while we get started we're at the gate we're at the doors to the left i know wait are we gonna stop and start it right if i find a neat effect can i say that the book grants it because i don't well let me know what the effect is and yeah because i i some of the ideas that we talked about last week you know what if you want to look through this and see if something ties in i don't mind getting a random one to your ideas you know okay and i don't even need to know the effect yet so there's your homework what are fan touches proficiencies your skills that you're proficient one is insight from the acolyte and the other's athletics or the soldier so it's insight and athletics galley's proficiencies are deception insight investigate and persuasion she's kind of a bargain very charismatic okay dains insights are athletics insight intimidation and religion come everybody gets four except me can you miss some right two for paladiness and two for background yeah if you use your bob or not yeah i hate that i'll figure it out animal handling history nature stealth and survival wow your range has got five nice thomas athletics and insight intimidation and perception and by the way what because is insight we're very intimidating as a group what is insight well for example if you know an enemy or you are familiar with the particular kind of situation you might gain an insight into you know what the next move is going to be this or they're likely going to flank or try to flank so that would give you an option to counter that before it happens uh and they guess it depends on the situation or how you present how you're using that insight skill to me and then i'll give you an ability check to see if you succeed and then i'll have to figure that out gotcha everyone is basically starting i think we said what like 30 gold pieces worth of i had 15 written down in nine because you're an omen we give you always less probably just kidding gilly have you selected a favored enemy yes i have two actually because if you pick humanoid you get to pick two different so orc and goblin i thought you were gonna say no they're cousins the gnomes kirth your skills your proficiencies do you have them yeah i've got everything worked out what are they you're for well i'm a rogue you see okay you get some more slight of hand stealth investigation insight times two perception and deception the times too one insight was because i can i have finesse in one thing i think it's called i don't quite remember gotcha all right dally's ready she's standing by the door waiting for these clowns to come along i'm changing insight because we got a lot of overlap there i'm uh going to get some extra illusion medicine i'm going to tell it to you in a second right now oh also dally has a sorcerer has a familiar it is a spider a mechanical spider it is now yeah perhaps a little uh it's a clockwork wind up spider well i like that clockwork spider yeah arania is the spider's name does the familiar give you any particular special it does now no i have no clue what so yeah i'll have to do a little more research on it but okay no problem well i tell you what do we have any last questions or important issues that are burdening our minds before we begin just a little one that i'm not sure we can answer billions i seem to have six different ability things um coefficients efficiencies are some of them in savings i imagine two of them now i imagine two of them come from my uh background is that a possibility even yeah okay because robs robs have four to begin with yeah robs have a lot of abilities they cover a lot of ground so between your race your class and your background it's very possible you have probably almost double what the other people will have i have six and a expertise it's called in insight i had to work on v tough mother oh your wisdom insight check decides whether you can determine the true intentions of a creature such as when searching out a lie or predicting someone's next move doing so involves the gleaning clues from body language speech habits and changes in mannerisms so you're kind of reading the person so i picked it judging their next move do you not know what it was i did not i did not attack wisdom and i have a very high wisdom so i was like oh inside sounds useful yeah for general i then moved it to field medicine because a lot of people have insight already it's almost evening and we are currently in the mountain citadel of rock fall we are all gathered together you are in your your basic civilian attires then going to begin by what you see the sun sets over the highlands and ablaze of red and gold it is a rare brilliantly clear evening and the foothills forested plateau and a lowland spread out below you stand out in sharp clarity it is a serene peaceful view and yet this land once the domain of the dwarves is now a danger-filled mystery you and members of clan room hammer have assembled on the public veranda overlooking stone gate in the refugees city of threshold you look around and see over a hundred citizens gathered upon the veranda the crowd is mostly dwarves with representatives from the other clans mixed with groups from threshold the mood is tense but curious and for the first time in decades you've sent something a little more in this crowd hope so what you have now is everyone has been coming to this part of the bond citadel which is the everyone knows what a veranda is correct it's a wide open patio that looks out over the front of stone gate and you see the threshold the refugee city threshold and its old buildings spread out before you you're kind of high up in the mountains right would it be fair to characterize it as a city or like a little town an old town or like a camp of lean-to's intents and is it permanent or is it it's permanent now because well from your perspective as dwarves it's temporary but from the perspective of the people who have been spending decades living there yeah it's hundred years old right yeah it's about 80 to 90 years old okay and it did start out as a lean-to's and tents and stuff like that and it has since over the decades growing up into actual buildings and cabins and stuff and that also has now grown into what it is today which is kind of like a second city or a sister city of wood and logs compared to the marvelous architecture of the dwarves and the stone city which is rock fall and what we're having tonight is uh the first official gather that has been announced in quite some time and as many people as you see around you these are citizens that you see every day these are shop owners these are smiths these are miners and masons and they're all from different clans everyone's kind of sticking to their own areas so to speak but there is young people younger dwarves here that there is a bit of a positive mood these have been dark times for the past hundred years so i'm not going to say it's a fairground or festival like but heard rumors that something has happened to this dragon and something actually lived can i get a perception your first role can i just get a quick perception check from everyone would be fair to say that this gathering is taking place on this large veranda yeah absolutely it's organized it's been announced and everyone is expected to attend these gathers and gathers are basically part-tone meeting part holiday so you're expecting an announcement from the elders of to explain something to you but you know it works off so everyone's relaxing part day all right we're only perception real quick right a dye 20 then is that a 20 of your wisdom check you add your wisdom bonus you added your wisdom ability and then if you have training in it you had two more right so it's going to be a success right this is just i just want to see a perception of everyone yes please really fucking okay starting on my right we have vantish what did you get 11 dally paying the utmost attention to whatever the hell we're looking for i rolled a 25 holy cow and actually that works good because you're a soldier did you all natural 20 i roll a 19 and i have plus four and then it's trained fantastic very perceptive first disgusted by the opulence of this place and only rolled a six kriff is kind of embittered maybe realizing his past slides but to the trained warriors and the people the two dwarves that have had the most experience outside of these stone walls but you see a lot of people that you know and see every day but you notice that there's people missing most of those are the soldiers and warriors and engineers of hal abadene you notice that uh for a gather which is a big deal and usually brings out everybody there are empty spots and this veranda is not nearly as full of people as you expected so you do notice that hey there's people not here something's a miss it's not that something's a miss it's unusual and you also suspect that if most of the soldiers warriors and engineers are not here then where could they be and why so how about both of you give me an insight role i'm not proficient 17 plus four for charisma i'm not proficient either but a total of 19 these are pretty big they noticed the missing soldiers they look at each other go yeah something no well the gems about it putting two and two together also maybe sensing the mood of the room and the mood of the leaders that you see and you get the sense that this isn't necessarily a danger or they're not about to declare martial martial law or anything like that but i would say you suspect that those groups those teams are on patrol or have been put where they're needed which is a change in the way the dwarves have been doing it for the past decade because it's been too dangerous just trying to hold the borders that you have right now could be that they're preparing something they could be that they're preparing something or taking advantage of something so or securing something they could be any one of those things you can actually it's the possibilities are are making you very uh interested that your old bones haven't felt this way in quite some time freshman memory were you okay with the idea that you were also scarred by dragonfire and that's one of the reasons why your abilities are the way they are or do you want to just go well i'm just a shitty roller no i i think that makes sense for my character okay you can get his age in okay in coming from the old country yeah but you also wear those burns as because you survived them yeah i have the background as folk heroes so you'd have to be at least a hundred years and i'm four hundred hundred years so gillig remembers a time before the dragon gillig remembers the good old days when all these lands that you see were under your direct control not your direct control the dwarves patrolled and maintained and kept everything safe and you have been very unhappy for the past six years 70 years watching the monstrosities and aberrations and monsters the minions of this dragon pollute and take over all these lands and so the rumors that you've heard about this dragon and is possible demise has been something that you are very eager to hear more about and with that being said a rustle goes through the crowd is whispers and and what you hear is a deep soft gum go off and this is typically the signal for everyone to kind of quiet down the elders of rock fall are approaching they're not in glittering fine or anything like that they're dwarves they're sensible solid folk but they are heads and plans they're heads of different trades and smith groups here in rock fall they take this at this where they turn to the audience i'm assuming that you are all kind of gathered together or are you interspersed throughout the oh dally is always a step or two somewhere in the orbit of dane but more or less you're and i say we're all i think even though we're from disparate families within our clan i think we enjoy having a drink together and enjoy we're all the adventures type i think we actually went on an adventure together did we not yes he has it all had experiences before right the speech is getting ready dally steps over a little bit closer to say a column or something takes out the little spider winds it up a bit and has a scurrier up to get a better view and record what's going on voice and video that you can watch later just for fun little spider can you see through its eyes i have no idea what it does but sure today i don't want to abuse it it's just for shouts you just quad cup or something well it has to hang on to the the problem and you're gonna help live stream it no totally it's three days of two and s okay so all the elders are basically equal but the elder that belongs to clan iron beard which is sort of rune hammer's political rival not you guys don't have a blood feud or anything like that but when it comes down to the current pecking order of the clans iron beard is at the top gotcha we used to be so they say those yeah it used to be the position of authority by root hammer but root hammer star has been in decline for these past few decades and so he steps up he's an older dwarf he's got steel gray hair you know this guy oh yeah you know this guy you remember him back in the day in fact you might have been uh troll mates or uh when you fought together you certainly have defended citadel many times against foes and you've gotten hunting orcs and defending uh some of their outlying outposts and farmsteads many times so you do have a history do you think you have a positive history or a negative history let's see what he says first okay good nature what negative i have said he's a dick his name is baldoran iron beard he is the current elder baldoran steps up and speaks to everyone this is a day we have long waited for everyone here has probably heard the rumors about the dragon and now we can finally confirm that along last the dragon coregness is dead and all of a sudden everyone is kind of stunned at quite the dwarves they don't get too emotional but it feels like everyone has emerged from a long deep shadow that's never this fair and people begin to clap and cheer and be happy for five a couple tears a possible some ston's smacking they continue on they they kind of motion for silence even as we speak here dozens of our warriors and teams have been dispatched to reinforce our borderlands during this time this is a time to celebrate this is good news but this is also time for change a time for new dangers because this dragon is now left a bull and we're not entirely sure what has happened in these lands that we have lost for all these years and we are going to have to be quick about discovering what has happened to our cities that we lost to the towns and villages that were inside this dragon's domain we have heard rumors we've had infrequent contact over the years with people but as you all know we've lost many brothers and sisters we've lost families we've lost warriors a plenty we have this all of statues we honor most of our clan leaders that have fallen in this endeavor here here but we also need to repair some of these roads and the bridges you know we had in order to reach some of these places my point is that there will be plenty of opportunity for all the trades all the workers we have so much work to do it's going to be a new age of prosperity and discovery as we work to cleanse the stain that this dragon left behind in our land to reconnect to the people of this valley and also to hopefully regain contact with the human kingdom on the far side back in landfall that's the southeast place if we could get out the map again which i don't want to go to right now at this time your elders have all agreed to re-institute an old position that we had in the north coordinate and command our troops in the field and our resources at home we have decided to appoint a new warsmith for halabadan and that honor will be bestowed upon one of your peers bronson ironbeard and a chair from clade ironbeard goes out now it's not necessarily you know think of uh when i say a warsmith i think that i was in world war two he's a spring commander who everyone has their generals or even has their commanders and captains but this is the guy this is the guy who is going to coordinate it's a position of prestige it's a position of power it's a position on your ass and your directions to others it's a position okay for an iron so he's part of the commander and she's just actually is not the commander and she's not the president you guys live in a pretty solid society here but he is the general if you will of the dwarven citadel's uh soldiers warriors and resources uh what do we know of him has he been in battle before yes all of the clan leaders and most of the dwarves here again this is a more or less lawful good society that's not to say that there isn't crime that there isn't unhappy individuals or disruptive elements these are experienced leaders of the community they are not the ironbirds are not like i said they're your political rivals for for clan rune hammer you don't really have too much dirt on him per se but then again maybe you haven't really been looking at you as a ranger i i wouldn't really care hmm you're not a city dwarf as much right you're you're out there getting things done you're getting the information that they need to know to know order to make these decisions is dane political or is he more well i think dane right now much to his father chagrin is not political he's more interested in following the passion and the light that his god is bestowed upon him and i think that's where he's at right now when he hears this news he probably thinks about spreading the word of porn throughout the brains that have lost that ability over the century of the dragon room so bronson steps up to the dais and greets the crowd that clan iron beer chairs a little bit louder than everyone else but he's a man a few words he kind of butters a few nice things is he younger gentlemen you know he's older he is about 250 years old okay okay children today but he seems a little bit kind of embarrassed by all the attention doesn't really want to be under as well he should yeah he be real heroes never return this is a grumpy old boating yes well there's a lot of work to do we're going to need you all my officers my smiths my people will be giving the rest of the clans their assignments their requirements their tides that we're going to need we're going to put people in our borders people in the field and we're going to secure halabadam we're going to secure the lands that were taken from us we're going to cleanse the stain from the area and we will pave the way to help begin the repatriation of the citizens and refugees so they will no longer have to huddle in these buildings outside our gates that they will now be able to safely return to their homes and their lands and their farmsteads and when he says that there's kind of there's kind of a little bit of uh yeah okay darkening at doorstep but this also kind of brings very painfully to light a kind of an issue that's been brimming under the society for a while which is to the doors threshold is a temporary refugee city in here for a hundred years temporary doors i took a shit let's have a long time got off the toilet there's still uh what race i have these refugees they're all uh they're all they're all where i know begin to kind of mix and mingle a bit but you see conversations everywhere as people are discussing what the impact of this gather dally calls back to spider and then starts to wander among the crowd because she's more chaotic in nature obviously than the door of sorrow so she's of the opinion she's born and raised her this is her time she's not leaving going here and she's trying to get a feel in the crowd of are they upset about this because this clown just said we all have to leave now we're fucking born here right as this has been an issue for kind of a long time and as certain criminal elements have kind of escalated there's been more call but overall it went over like a led balloon it did not really sit well the gist of what you're hearing is that something doesn't feel right but it's too soon to start worrying about that i mean there's people are still trying rocked and real by the news that this dragon that they've been living under for uh but they're also upset that the guy don't have any problem approaching i mean this is ridiculous okay you got to change i i know dwarves are stuck up along the way his kirth has some questions about it because he's not used to being in a clan do we have a lot with them do yeah he wants to know what this means for him pretty much so are we gonna be volunteers for something or can we pick our choices because if we can get out of town the two uh season warrior guys go over there to share a brew while for very different regions vantesh and kirth seek out to the pillar of form and as you look around the cloud the the crowd uh it's starting to disperse more evenly as people are going to the food tables and you find dorn and surrounded by a couple of the other members of the temple some of the priests not everyone in the temple are clerics uh you're kind of clerics and paladins are a special case so there are normal priests or normal priests of torm that don't necessarily have powers so to speak sure so you guys can uh approach him and and he is a as dwarves go very handsome striking dwarf his hair and beard our silver white he has piercing blue eyes he has a big red bulb of a nose uh but he does have old scars on his face and on his arms he was once like you he was kind of a adventuring cleric and so he does kind of have a knowledge of the outside world as well but uh you found him to be fair but stricken from but he's not advanced one as he turns he's holding a steel god look and he watches you three approach i defer to vantesh because he is older than me and i am newer also to paladinhood than he has been to the priesthood so regardless of where my rank might be just i think it's it's fair to defer to him in this to give the first greeting to okay so he turns and dorm looks at vantesh and knots agreed him warmly and suggest we have a toast of ale you know hello brother how are you and he motions over to a server brings over a beer tray you guys each take a uh goblet and uh you toast to the death of the dragon and he holds out his cup the death of the dragon what's on your mind vantesh you look a little trouble oh not really just wondering what the church of dorms uh part of this going to be as we all are well i'm wondering if you have any insight you catch him looking over at bronson ironbeard who already seems to have a group of staff officers if you will uh he seems to be kind of issuing uh directives and orders and people are kind of coming and going so even at this gather where you're supposed to kind of enjoy yourself it seems that uh bronson has already begun to work and dorm kind of crooks and eyebrow and kind of nods and this is not a hit to rune hammer's respect that we have uh then we the respect that we have for rune hammer and don't view this as anything but uh bronson you know as a good man and i think that he'll do well to lead us through this difficult time and the church will support him as needed and i'm sure that he certainly recognizes you dane he knows what you're about and knows what you're capable of and i'm sure you're going to be given a task that is reveal your talents the last mission came from form to you to us it will be time to take orders from others as opposed to following uh in our god's glorious footsteps tormel certainly guide us as we help to secure and take care of what is important right now which is i think trying to secure our land kind of outside your borderlands that didn't live here in quite some time but does that mean there's no humans in um no there's human there's humans in threshold okay what feet that's adorable you know they may have had grandparents and old family lands back there but okay they have since probably they don't tend to wander into this area and that was what was exceptional well in this area you didn't think it was very common to see people outside of your society most of the people that made it through were either crazy adventurers who were risking the days of the wild or to be honest a lot of people vanished and died they thought they'd go out and take on the world and carve out a niche for themselves only never to be heard from again so refugees uh so yeah or they would come and uh they found and stayed in the relative safety of the highlands here at tal abadon and rock fall so this is now dorn talking to responding to dane's question torms still guides our way and we will offer our advice and our support to the worst myth because the elder council has chosen him and we follow the chain of command we will do what he says he's not taking over this is not a dictatorship i know she goes looking for dad which is a thorough actually dane's father you know and he's in the middle of some great way back to the old ways is change it is not so she tries to hook up with dad and complain but he's busy talking to right so she ends up in the in the long one kind of wandering out to threshold and visiting with those people who are going to be much more concerned about this than she is did they receive the news yet most motive for it it's not news to them because this has always been something that's going to have been lurking under the surface that yeah we get it we're we're than that and the dwarven stone basins and all those guys have really built you a better house over here that has been a growing tension and a bad tension but it's still there dally's not doing a was thinking you have advantage so yeah even if you lose your your even if you lose a safe throw to poison damage because you have advantage to that even if you lose you have resistance to poison orders and through the rumor bill you hear additional requests from the warsmith from the different plans for dwarves for resources for knowledge and expertise it sounds like and it's no secret but it sounds like there is an organized campaign to reestablish the roadways and the access points that you guys once had that have access to trade you're talking about reclaiming lands that have been taken over or damaged and destroyed uh in the past so they're going to need scouts and small teams to kind of go out and get reports and evaluate that and then for clan room hammer some of the tasks that have come down and then particularly the one that we're going to focus on is you've been tasked to discover why some of the food shipments have been delayed coming into the uh city there's no small job only small people tiny lieutenant that's the direction we're going i'm going to want to find out who regdon reports to directly does he does he get his information directly from johnson or is he well he's a lieutenant so you know that regdon is probably as high of a rank as he is because of favors uh not maybe merit so you suspect that there's probably several people above him and you might know where they are as a plan i'm going to try to talk to one of those people because you know that there's a waste of time i want to say that we're going to do the job we're going to do it damn well and i expect a little more challenging something we're going to extend through and if do i can help me with that? great we'll see dally dally is unintentionally stirring shit up and threshold sharing skin sits down in the alley and starts researching there is still a section of the book that you know in the core of your bones that you don't dare turn to those pages yet there's something as a matter of life and death that terrify you and you're like and but at the same time it is intriguing and tempting it's almost like it's daring you and egging you want and trying to turn those pages but not yet you're not ready to see what that is have you decided who of the seven clan leaders that you would have taken this book from do you i don't know anything about them okay pretty much it's going to be the most powerful one iron beard or whatever i have figured it was what's i mean well he was you were also kind of talking to that it might even be a rude hammer i thought about it but i don't mind it being somebody else okay well that's something we can we can iron out later what do you have any purposes or better in your story either way there is opportunity for a lot of different things i don't think it needs to be iron beard but if you want to kind of stick with the same name instead of adding warnings to you can do that simpler is always better now you as a a soldier an experienced one of course word gets to you that okay the orders have come in and to you a job is a job right get this done and then do something more interesting well you've done enough hurry up and wait in your life in the in the as a soldier that you think the whole everything is messed up so it's always messed up it's always food bar it's always snafu so why not let's go no crud look that's great that's good news and actually you look into the hospital is that where there's farms there's food so that's a positive thing it's important for the big picture uh do i know where this town like you look at it you would know where it is it's to the south there is a direct access road to it there are risks because there is the high mountains and there are dangers in the mountains but for the most part there's been normally every team it's a terraced farm on a mountain side and it's called the terraced farms right and we live in the mountains we don't have an underground tunnel to it maybe we've been too busy to keep those and they've been overrun by things that live down there it could be anything i'm just wondering given that they're both well actually that's a good point you guys wouldn't know enough about terraced farms let me do a very brief description about that so because there is been very little flat land for crops and because your food needs had grown so much more over the decades and you had less room to do it in and not everyone can subsist on the special farms and cave farms of mushrooms and other fungi that they guys had going on that you know dwarves normally like but get tired of these years got together and terraced a whole area the mountainside and created basically what they needed these hanging gardens these terraced farms where a lot of crops are grown and maintained and for the most part it's been a secure place it has been attacked several times by or scouting parties and other hazards since you guys are kind of focused on other things you maybe not know all the full details about that but it's south of you after the career comes by and gives them information on what their job is to be he stops his drinking goes to get more recent reports on what happened there and that's what he does for the rest of the night i don't know about gillip gillip probably going to socialize for the remainder of the evening okay now you do know that you have that you want to early start and you as a ranger will probably be the setting the pace for the march so you i haven't received any marching orders you well the rumors are going around that all the different clients the worst one is giving out and root hammer's tasks have filtered down to you that's one thing i want to do is make sure yeah members of my group know what's expected of us so yeah the word i want to talk to gilligan in particular if he has any expense all the good time everyone's always in a hurry or from work to see if gillick knows any of the most current information that's actually man we got in front of it well when when deli gets back to the dorben compound area she hears about it too and she gets all excited she runs to her lab i'm gonna need this i'm gonna need this find it plus one dagger or plus one armor or shield because that kind of seems to be not really descriptive or whatever and so i'd like to tie in intrinsic value to some of this magic stuff for so for example a plus one blade is actually a a well-made dwarven or a well-made uh elven blade a master work if you will plus two could be something of a rare metal like mithril uh plus three could be some you know rare rare substance so in a way the value for your characters will be the plus two plus three will eventually get there but descriptively i'd like to call it like a dragon a shield crafted from the scales of a dragon right um a sword that is you know that uh barrow forged from uh fallen star that you know it's got a different blade so just to kind of add a little uh a little color and creativity to that as well okay i'm sorry just real quick time out again i'm sorry um equipment so even though we're third level we're just going with the base packages right there's nothing besides the plus one we get that's right we don't have do we have money yes you should all have what i say 15 or 30 that's for now 30 sure okay certain 10 gold per level so if you need to buy equipment and if there's something in particular for you that you feel that your character needs like for example your your holy symbol that's provided to you by your church right that's part of one of my packages i
