Silverbell thinks she's found a way to talk to the lost members of the party. But how lost are they and where are they really?

[Music] Hello, and welcome to Night to the Night Actual Play Podcast. This world of darkness, adventure, sin-eater, was written and run by a star-dollar Scott. And now, please enjoy episode 214, titled, "I'm High as Several Pikes". Actual play begins 12 minutes, 5 seconds. [Music] And on the feedback, we had a post on the KOTN blog from Ed Heilner. Yay, it's been a long time ago. It says, "Good day, nice." Sounds like you might be passing the halfway point on this time-travel adventure. I thought I might suggest a game to play between your major campaigns that might clean the palette of the issues some are you having with the sin-eater. Have a look at TimeWatch, it uses the gumshoe system and puts PCs in far more control of the destiny. If I ever get around and running it in anger, it will resemble a mashup of Bill and Ted and Stargate. But I'm not sure you lot will find the deep and dark mysteries to solve, albeit science fiction instead of supernatural. Maybe it's time for Mike to GM, given his previously mentioned, "Love of Science Fiction". Strange that you should mention Mike running a game as GM, because that might well be the next game. We should have a vote on what people think the next game will be, that Mike will be running. Oh, Procien. So, Mike, that's a good word, by the way. We can put it up on the thing. By the way, I think I did figure out how we could do a traveler one. Oh, don't do it. Pre-gen? Don't do it, it's going to ruin your childhood. Pre-gen, you'll never forget it. The character changes like half the story. I know, that's the game, isn't it? Why don't we just say we did it? Well, I'll sit around and Mike will tell, you know, give it up. Here's what would have happened, and then you all die. Jim, for some reason, ejected in an escape pod that had to be separate from everyone. So, you spent the whole time trying to recover him. There was also an additional post on the blog page from Blaze Brazil, who said randomly, relevant poems unexpectedly said from behind the door, no one knew they were at. Normal person would say, no, maybe it's a trap. Sister Katie says, seems okay to me, come on in. She must have made a passcode and told no one else, later on he posted on her another episode and said, so escaping from the trees might have been distracting, but no one thought to look around for the kids that were supposed to be there? Yeah. Well, we did discuss that off Mike. Yes. And the kids were not there, and we would have had to wander deep into this. And you felt like the thorns were tearing at your soles, and it was a little off Mike action there, but yeah. You were in the adult section of the 40 trees, clearly in 30 seconds. Over on Facebook, episode 211 on Hand Me Good Sir, Greg Conant posted and said, I would definitely read a Michael Clay series, book number one, A Leatherman Darkly. That is a son of a bitch. So, get this. Episode 212, which I believe is Pimp, Greg, also posted and said, my favorite line of this episode was, so instead of following the river, we're just going to do narcotics. Well played shoe. Episode 213, Luke Green posted and said, I love that your translation app works without an internet connection. To be fair, we had special government issue phones that I love to be internet. That's right. They contained the entire internet. Or at least the useful things that we use all the time. I got an app that does that. Well I figured that your government issue stuff would be at least five to seven years out. So, it's got to be fair with the large size. It doesn't need to be that huge, like in the 90s they had those standalone devices. We were using the books to translate. We had the phones with the photographs of the text, not someone might have done like a brief translation book on one time I think, but we might actually want to do it. I don't know how Silver Bell even had a phone. Yeah, so the phone. I had a phone. Yeah. You were taking pictures with it. She was a teenage girl. She always had her phone. She was a teenage girl locked in a basement in which her phone with a severed head. While we were. It wasn't a severed head. It was a downhill. I thought I was taking pictures with a phone that you guys had because they were the people with me. That's wrong. According to the genius. Oh, sorry. Well either way. I can see it with one of the basements in Wisconsin. I'm not getting any damn signals out there. Who Dad's going to lock it around? I'm trying not to leave my Facebook. No, no, no, remember you guys didn't have any signal. When you were on the farm. So that you had that signal. It was really cruel. Right. So here's your phone. Yeah, keep it. Facebook page still locked in the basement. The A350 says. Oh boy. Sad grace diary. I fear I'm going mad. Nothing makes sense in this place. I love those. Those are great. Luke also posted on the same episode and said, "I've said in the past that the difference between supernatural horror and fantasy can be described as, in fantasy there's a big bad evil thing that everyone knows about and in horror there's a big bad evil thing that almost nobody knows about." The pair of statements comes along with some implications. In fantasy the evil is a regular occurrence that is relatively well known limits and methods to combat it. There's also numerous allies available to support you and as a result the characters are much better armed and comparatively more powerful than they would be in a horror setting. In the horror setting the limits of the evil are not well defined and the characters have few if any allies and they don't know which method works against the enemy. They could be armed with an exact same set of powers and weapons and still be weaker. However, to me the ultimate thing that makes horror into what it is would be the destruction of one's world view. One of the best horror movies I've seen is the original Chinese version of The Eye. There is no malevolence. The American version describes the portrayal of the shadow as evil in the original there was none of that. The ghosts by and large don't seem to mean any harm however the fact remains that everything the woman thought was true about the world has been shown to be false. At the start she doesn't freak out worrying about the ghost she's saying because she's been blind all of her life and just thinks it's a normal thing. Once she realizes that no one else can see what she's saying and what they are she begins to freak out and doubt her sanity. Her world view is clashing with what her eyes are telling her. When the world is not as we believe it to be then we are in a nightmare and nothing's worse than a nightmare that one can't wake up from. It was interesting. A very interesting description of horror and fantasy. Relevant? It was interesting. Well said Luke. Yes. Kevin Bates also posted an episode 213 on Facebook and said cool episode nights but I really thought the Loa that insisted on the characters getting high was just going to bail on them. Peace out and leave them stranded in an alternate universe high out of their mind with something super natural stocking them. I would enjoy that almost as much as what we really want. I wouldn't care. We were high. It was an interesting concept but I was trying to bring the group back together. Yes. We had two bits of email from feedback at kotnpodcast.com. Luna Voca wrote in and said Tom I love the background music you've been using. I've heard some Dune and some Diablo 2 Tunes thrown in which are both great for atmosphere. While listening this week I realized just how enriching this addition to the podcast is. Keep up the great work. Regarding the cult that worships Mike on episode 211 feedback since no one has done so far, I fabricate and claim the title of Supreme Arch Domina of the cult dedicated to Mike's awesomeness. I feel like I'm tailor made for this position and I invite pledges to submit a pun for their entrance into the fold. Any sayers will reap what they have done. Tom has edited out puns for the past three years. Pushing on through. He continues with regarding spobs we're changing lives here. I know it was said and just but there are days when seeing the notification that a new KOTN podcast is the best thing that happens that day. Thanks for sharing your game table with us. Luna Voca. P.S. Every time Tom says horror I hear horror. I know what you mean but I chuckle at it anyways. Thanks for the unintended connotation. It's like a mirror or a mirror. I can't say ruins. I cannot say vizier. Still can't get the title of the slaughter of names. But that's not really fair, it envelopes him. The flames envelopes. I didn't. It envelopes. You mean envelopes? No, it envelopes it. Pass the sticky part. Stamping everything. Stamping everything. Our last bit of feedback at kotnpodcast.com emailed Greg Blackburn sent in an email and said hello KOTN crew. This may be a little more serious than a lot of your feedback but I wanted to thank you guys for your podcast. This December I lost my mother to cancer. The hospital that she stayed at the last few months was about two hours drive away from where I lived and worked. Visiting as often as I could meant spending a lot of hours in the car and during those drives your podcast became my preferred companion. The new episodes when they arrived and the back episodes of You Should Get in Story in Between. The horror themed tabletop game might seem like an odd choice for a time like this but it worked for me. It was a great way to distract myself from all the negativity of what I was experiencing. You guys always do a great job of bringing to life a different world to get lost in. A lot of days I would be too drained to focus on news or another podcast but I would still put on an old episode and sort of drift in and out of the narrative. Your slower playing style really helped there. Also dealing with my mom's cancer meant sacrificing my social life for a while. I didn't have time to run my regular RPG group and I barely saw anyone outside of my wife and family for several months. It was nice that during those drives I could surround myself with the sounds of games friendly banter and fun. So I just wanted to express my gratitude. It may just be a gaming podcast but your show gave me a measure of comfort at the time when it was sorely needed. Life goes on and I'm getting back to my normal routine. I won't have time to binge listen anymore but I'm slowly making my way through shitlock and as long as you keep putting out new episodes I'll keep listening. Thanks. Craig. Awesome. Sorry for your loss. We also lost the parents. Many of us. Most of us. To our cancer. So we certainly understand that's the difficult time to go through. Right. So the games we're listening. Yeah. If we can bring any measure of happiness which just sounds like we do. It just, yeah. That makes us feel good to know that we made his life a little easier at that time. One last thing before we get into the podcast it is February we have a t-shirt to give away. So we're going to have Rachel roll the dice to determine who wins the t-shirt for February. Okay. That is Lunavoco is the winner of this month. Hey. As well. Yeah. You just had feedback on this. Today. So congratulations to Lunavoco and with that Amazon link, Patreon and all that fun stuff and we'll get on with the episode. This is the world of darkness story. The cineeter I'm your storyteller Scott and with me tonight on my right. Michael playing Ethan Clark a medical doctor and member of H.S. Kigeru since 1929. I'm Tom playing J. Alton a member of the ascending one and leader of the squad. I am Jim playing Katie O'Connor a non and member of the Malius Malphacharm. Thomas playing Edgar Montes. Dune practitioner a member of the Lemis today. Mike playing Michael Clay the academic adventure from the Aegis Kydore. Bob playing FBI Special Agent 2 Park a member of the Basque conspiracy. John playing Daniel Morgan a mountain man turn mercenary next member of task force doctor. Rachel playing Silverbell apathetic teenager. Everyone hates. Everyone loves you all around well. Yep. We saw an email. Look at that picture. I know. Totally email. Yes. So as we left it the last time we played those of you stranded in the hedge had performed a ceremony and had stepped into the jaws of a great world eating snake and. Rowana. And what? Rowana right. Passage and some other shit. Right. And had hoped to find a gateway back home. So we're going to start with a group that's in 1935 Cleveland in the hotel rooms doing the research specifically Silverbell who had read this journal and had spent the experience points from that mistake and to learn the new we'll call it again style for a better term. Speaking of do we all take a beat? No. Well I'm sorry that's a great thing everyone should have taken a beat at the end of last week's session. Do we have to go like Jessica we're taking a beat? Nope. That's only Rachel. Very good so every time you get five beats you get another experience point. Correct. Is anyone complete? No. Let's go around starting with Rachel regarding the short term and long term aspirations. Wow. Shit. Same as last time hasn't changed try to speak with right with Jay find binary hex get back to the present day. Great. Daniel. Nope. Nothing changed. Nothing has changed but I think it's about to. Excellent. No I think we escaped the hedge so I'm changing my name's escaped the snake. That's... No. Alright man. No. Take a step. Take a yellow step. That's my long term. The assumption is we have escaped the hedge right? Well you don't know. I would technically say you're still in the hedge here to do what you might say. Well I think your bodies are still on the hedge and you're doing this in a kind of haze dreamlike alternate place that is heavily drugging used. So none of mine changed? No. I missed. Okay so Michael Clay. They haven't changed. Okay and then Edgar. I need some replacement cigarettes. I was going to steal them but that's on the back burner because I'm not even back yet. Right. You just stole the morphine so. And I don't have another second one yet. It was originally escaped the hedge but I scored that and I shouldn't have apparently or whatever. Right. More fine. You'll catch up with that. I'm sure it's in enough. Sister Katie. I've probably got to drive a car this time period. Excellent. Did you pick up another short term aspiration? I was thinking about wanting to drive a sports car from this time period. All right. Sure enough. Sure character is very much focused on driving. Ethan has nothing to report. All right. Great. So you're back at the adjoining hotel rooms. There's the room that Silver Bell is in and she has made. Yes. What time is it? It's at this point it's probably midnight 1 a.m. It's getting pretty late. Okay. We got to get going. Right. You have read the journal from this archaeologist that has the spell that you're looking for if you found in the restricted section of the Cleveland Public Library. The missing ingredient if you will for lack of a better term is that there's some hieroglyphics that you sure are important to the manifestation of this spell to make it work but you don't speak hieroglyphic. So you but you do know that you have two archaeologists that are part of your current group which may or may not be of great value to you in deciphering this. Okay. Can we do this in the back of the car? Where is that? I thought we were in the hotel room. You are in the hotel room. Yeah he was nervous because of the child that's going to be abducted sometime in the dead hours of the night. Where are you planning on going? We don't have a destination. We don't. It takes us down towards the shanty towns is all we've got so far. We'll need a lead to go on certainly but we do need to be in the neighborhood. I think we need to research to know where to be. Okay. Do we have another radio? Can I go out there and they tell me what to do? Sure. Okay. I'm out there. Okay. Who's coming with me? I'm not. I'll drive. Can't drive in the shanty towns. It's way too hard. I'll drive to the shanty towns. Yeah. Well, you are at the top of the shanty town. The superior viaduct goes down into the shanty town and that's where you're above. The hotel Amsterdam is right above the intersection of 25th in Detroit and there is, actually I think it's Detroit Road viaduct that goes down into the flats. So the present day flat was the shanty town in 1935. So basically it should be driving across the street. It would be a waste of time to go get the vehicle because it's across the street. You guys got a couple hours of research, right? Probably. At least. I'm taking a nap. Okay. Bye. Okay. So, Sister Katie is taking a nap. Daniel, you grab a walkie-talkie. What else do you have as you arm yourself to go down into the shanty town and the viaduct? Do we have a bag? I could steal a shotgun in. I heard that it works well against mirrors. Well if you, what kind of, do you have a long coat or an overcoat? No, I'm not that bad ass. It's middle of summer, so he probably is not wearing. But then again, if you're in the shanty town, you're wearing everything you own, so it's conceivable maybe. I'm not thinking he couldn't bear one. No, but when we went to the castle farm, he wouldn't have been carrying it. It's a hot summer. It was a really hot summer night, if you remember. Oh, that's right. That's right. What I will say is you have a duffel bag. That's the only thing that would finish shotgun in it. You have a military grade duffel bag that you did bring to chagrin and did find its way to 1935. Okay. Sung that over my shoulder with a shotgun and safety out of all of it. Is there a place in the shanty town that was like a landmark that we can say at least okay within an hour, be near that landmark, so at least we can try to rendezvous later. There was a suspension bridge over the river. There was also Jackass Hill where Dr. Collins was practicing. There's a couple of, you guys told me the ley lines were important and there was something going on in there with the ley lines or whatever. Yeah, but I don't know if we know where the ley lines would match up to the shanty town unless race has a way to do it. I thought we visited it. But also on the top of the hill, you get the best transmission from the radio. Yeah, it does have a race. Yeah. I'm going to Jackass Hill. Okay. So anyway, that's my point that okay within we'll try to get going at least as far as we can and let's rendezvous within an hour and a half because it's going to take you time to get there at the bridge. So at least we're not trying to. The goggles are gateways, ley lines are lines of power. So you don't believe that you'll be able to see the ley lines with this, although you're not a hundred percent certain of that fact. Okay. So your decision on how you want to handle that. Okay. Daniel announces everyone that he is going down to Jackass Hill. He has a shortwave radio to be able to contact you, which you believe will work at that distance. That was about, if I'm not mistaken, a half mile into the shanty, the towns because there are several of them connected and that should have the distance that should be close enough to work. Can anyone give me anything for perception out there? Just spotting if he does anything, does anyone have anything for that? You know, that's pretty much what we're searching for, but yeah, I've got some goggles here that I'm reluctant to part with, but I'm thinking, perhaps, or unless you can help the research. Get my failures earlier with research that's more like you, so I don't care how you go. So take good care of these. He gets to you a pair of what, look, do you have a picture of them or no? Somewhere. Okay. I, what looks to all the world like a pair of 30's aviator goggles with a steampunk twist, if you will. There's no idea what that is. Right. Yes. No, no. Woody's a goggles. Yes. And Rachel. Are you going to continue to research this hedge place? I was looking for the ban, but if you got something new that can either help me or I can help you, sure. The ban? The ban is a way to attack a spirit, and spirits always have a weakness, and if we know what the ban is, then we have a much better chance of being able to defeat or at least protect ourselves against the shattered ban. A ban is actually a restriction, something the spirit has to do, it's not necessarily. Our defense are an attack point or a weakness? Yeah. I mean, it's kind of a- Okay. Isn't it? Am I wrong? That's a huge part of it. If there was a spirit of gluttony and you were to drop skittles in front of it, for instance, it would have to stop and pick up each one of them. Do you have to say would you have to whisper a taste of rainbows? You would. And it would have to, it's a compulsion that it has to do, but there's also bands that they can't interact with. If there was a circle of blood, the spirit question, if it was a spirit of murder, might not be able to step over that river, quote unquote, blood. Time spirit. So it can be both. So spirits don't have free wills and these are roles that they have to follow. They have to wear avatars that they have to follow. Okay. A ban is just, it's a weakness that they have that you try to exploit to your advantage. And it's usually the only way that moral, quote unquote, can defeat something powerful like that is through their bans. So you're thinking the shattered man is a spirit? He's in the hedge, he seems to be, he's part of a lore and a mythology here that the kids are saying. So I think what basically we've seen that he's got to have some kind of association with magic or the hedge, which is Arcadia Arcadia, thank you. So yeah, usually they do. I mean, we encountered and your farm as a matter of fact, a bunch of demon spirits that we had. The feeder demons at your farm? Feeder demons. Yeah. Absolutely. He stood on me. So I remember that part. No, you've caught your tongue and you were bleeding and asking the question. They had to answer it. Yeah. So things like that. They have just ways to compel them to do things. Now to be fair, the shattered man may not be a spirit. It might be a thing. Or a disguise for someone else, but usually every creature, if it's not a band, he's using a term that he's familiar with because he knows spirits, but each creature in the world of darkness has some weakness, whether it's a werewolf or a vampire or whatever, things they can't do or they're weak to. And that's what he's referring to. So he might be calling it a band and you might be thinking your head something different. Like, oh, that's a vulnerability. Yes. Werewolves are vulnerable to silver. So that would be like their band. Yes. Do it. The thing is, I have this journal and I don't understand it. It's these hieroglyphics. No, I'm French. Oh, it's hieroglyphics. Okay. Yeah. If you could take a look at it, they're like, yeah, of course. Do I recognize that she shows me the book? It's just the book. What? She tried off books. You were French. I'm sorry. Well, it's just been, if you were to, if you could take a look at it and figure it out, I would be able to get a message to Jay. But I don't know what we would say to him. I don't, we didn't get that much information at the library. We didn't do that much research. I don't know what this place is or even what to tell him to do. I don't know if you really want to spend time on that right now or if you do, if you need me here. I kind of want to go with Daniel and take a look at this whole shattered man situation. Is there anything else that you need for Ethan or you need for most? Well, Ethan, I think would come over when he hears hieroglyphics. Yeah. Yeah. I'll look at the book, but I'll pause for a minute and go into my sessions. I would like both, well, you either can make two separate roles or one of you can help the other one with the hieroglyphics, your choice on how you want to handle it. We get going. I want to, I want to, I want to, before she goes, I'm just like, you know, look, these belongings. He's going to know him. He's going to know him. He's a very short period of time. Yeah. He's going to know within five minutes whether he knows exactly what he knows it. Right. So, so I don't need to, she's not leaving, I don't know. No, you look at them and you either know them or you don't know them from your research. You don't have a hieroglyphic book, you can go back on it, it's just your memory. Well, Doc, have you been doing field work lately? Probably more than I have. I'm not a whole lot with hieroglyphics, but I got the, but it's been a short while since Henry Carter opened up. Egyptology is certainly something that would be very, that was all the rage in Britain. It really is. Shortly before. Yeah. Right. Twenty. That's what I was thinking. I was thinking it happened mostly in the roaring twenties or shortly. Yeah. I think right after that, right after World War I ended. So my point being, even though you might not have a lot of exposure to it and tie back and the other areas you want, you certainly would have read a lot of newspapers, maybe even dabbled on the side. So the role is going to be academics plus intelligence. If you guys wish to help each other, aid each other up to one thing. If you wish to roll separately, that's another thing. Just however you want to handle it. I defer to the distinguished gentleman. Okay. Go ahead and make your five guys roll. No minuses. No minuses. I'm going to say archeologists, archeologists, right up your, Oh, we're just remembering what you saw. So whether you saw these, these, these particular hieroglyphs or not in any way, here we go. Oh, a lot of nothing. God bless it. That's why I usually help. These are Western Egyptian. So he was unable to offer a proper any solution. So straight up seven, straight up seven unless you want a risk spend below the, you know, it's your call. I think that might want to do that. Risk or spend. Spend. Okay. That gives you your choice plus three dice a exceptional success is three success incentive five or nine. Again. I'll go the extra three total of 10 dice with eight and nine two successes. It turns out that Ethan is able to decipher those hieroglyphs to you and you feel as if that was the last piece of the puzzle fitting into place. If he was able to, why didn't I show it to him in the library when I spent that's all. Well, but you can see, he was off looking for something. I need to find the right part and I need Michael. Right. Search as it was. Yeah. I told him what it was. Here's the floor. You were, you know, you were fixated on something you said, no, I can tell you right now. It's absolutely not that. And then sprung the answer for you and helped you find it. So a long story short, you are now able to do that particular spell. If you wish to do it spell again, I'll just call the style just because I want to reveal what it is. Can you guys think of any reason why I should go ahead and do this right now? Can you explain if it's like a two way thing? What is it you're? It's just a messy feeling. He can hear me. Well, at this point, we don't hear him. So yes, it is to it at this point. We don't know anything about what happened. No idea what's going on. So I would say that there'd be urgency to find out and make contact. Yeah, you don't know they were in the head. You don't know. We didn't know they were in the head. We knew they were in the head, but impaled upon a three. But if there's anything- We know they were alive. We don't know how they got- We heard JLI. Sorry. No, no. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't. We know that they were attacked or that there was a fight and we know that they were impaled on a tree of pain or- We think they really- No, Jay. I'm sorry. Jay. I've been- Jay was- Right. He was there at all. And you don't give a shit about Edgar, so- Yeah. It's so true. That's not true. That's not true. To be honest, I would be desperate to have a contact in J, so I would say yes, go for it. What's the downside? Is there a downside? The only downside I can think of is that if it somehow puts grace at risk to be attacked or contacted by someone other than Jay. No. That's not true. Okay. Not a rip. We're trying to start something. Daniel, are you leaving right now? I want to. Okay. How long does yours help take? It's going to take a little while, so go ahead and go. How about Katie and Daniel go and we'll catch up because I'm starting to fall asleep. Well, he's going to need your- Was that one of your aspirations? Yeah. That's a good idea. You know. The only people who really experienced or seem to know anything about this shadowed man are currently in the hedge. We know nothing about him. I agree. We've tried to do research on what this hedge is, and we've come up empty. I feel like the only thing that's going to work at this point is to actually do what Daniel is doing and go try to find him. But you do know that Jay battled the shadowed man. Shadowed man. Feel that pretty confidently, so might he not know something and have learned something? They can't talk back. Yes he can. Yes he can. No, he can't. No, he can't. No, he can't. No, he can't. Sorry. I misspelled it. That's good. How long are we talking? You know, you're rushing to go nowhere in particular, so maybe it's an intonation. Oh, we don't know. It's already midnight. Well, I understand, but we still don't know where the rush is going to take place. I don't think there's a rush if you don't know where you're going, but I'm saying the additional information is required. There may be one way to know. I don't know if I can do it. Yes. Grace. What? Even before we were afraid for you to view the shattered man, if he's hunting someone tonight, it might help to know where he is. If you could bring a shard of the mirror that was shattered in the Western Union office and track him through that, we might be able to find him with or without Jay's help. You know, but finding him is one thing, but what are we going to do then? That's what you guys are for. I do have. We already had Jay already took him on and didn't work out very well for him. He didn't use his radio. He wasn't ready. When Jay's prepared, he can handle it. However, I can use, I can finally call upon my relic and use the knife to try to answer one question. And that question can be, give me the name of who the shadow of the man's going for tonight. Sure. Okay. That sounds like a much safer option from where I'm sitting. You know, this may or may not work. Can you take a motor of your bread? To answer. It's not a motor day. What's that? How long it would take? Yes. It could take up to five minutes, up to five minutes. I say go for it. I'm not that long. I'm just a teenager. That's like 37 text messages. Could. 37. Yes. 37. 100. Are you going to need a little slower? Bring a shard and let you go to the... Granted, the thing is, I've never done this before. So I say could, because it could possibly not work. You'll do five. Good. I'm taking it up. Wait. She's going to try contact Jay and she would like you to be available for this and then you can ask her questions. Okay. I think they're both valuable pieces of the puzzle, to be honest. So. Is there anything we can do to help? I'm observing what she's doing. Sure. Okay. I am observing that you're consulting about or not. You're seeing Daniel? I don't know. I don't know. It's actually a circle. But you're not. You're not 11. That was... I thought that was at the... That was at the question union. No, I did not make one at the question union. Oh, you made me yell that. I made one here. Fair enough. I thought you were sleeping. You slept there. Yeah. Well, everybody's talking and I can't sleep. And they go here and go there and wait a minute and hold on. I need to write down the actual message that we want to get to Jay. Okay. Let's go feed it the piece of stationary off of the desk. What are we saying? I think we can open with... what can we do to help? Okay. Is there a limit here? To your... Jay. Stop. How are you feeling? No. I mean, within reason. Yes. But... I've never written... I've never done this before. I've never done this before. So. This is my first time. Well... Dear had Jay... Oh, wow. You're not helping. Come on, it was solid. It was a great information as to... Maybe you should tell him who we are. Oh yeah. It could be something that's not always report and advise. Does he see you? He doesn't see us. He just hears... Okay. So here's how this is supposed to work. He's going to hear a voice. It's not even going to register that he's hearing a voice. He's going to think and respond. After the fact he will realize, wait, what? Wait, where did that come from? But... Kind of like talking to a subconscious. Exactly. And you can open with this is Silver Bell. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Or we could just say sit rep. He'd be... He'd military. He'd know that. It's lingo from our decade that he would respond to. Right. Sit rep. That's it. That's all you guys want. No. Well, is brevity an issue here? Or can we say more? I've never done this before. We really miss you. We watch you back here. Be in charge of the desperate need for your command abilities and your own. This isn't a telegram. I think we can go a little further. Tell them we're trying to get in contact with them and give us a help we help you. Jay. Sit rep. Jay, it's siren. Sit rep. That's all you want. No. Not all they... Well, the situation report. Yeah. How about you give it? Okay. We... I don't know. Give it a sit rep. Sit rep means a situation report. You're going to give him one. Thought we were asking for... Well, that's not over. Because he has the info. Or any advice, you know. Yeah. It's a two-way communication. I don't know. It's a conversation on the ban. We're doing research. Daniel and Silverbell are going out for... Reconnaissance. Reconnaissance. Reconnaissance. I'm Jack Esso. Do you know the Shadowman's trip next target? Full stop. Ask him about the Shadowman's trip next target. That's a V. That's a V sometime. Jay, it's siren. You're 1 a.m. Advise on the Shadowman's next target. Yeah. Okay. And then, again, we want him to report back... And what can we do to help you? What can we do to help? Evac. We'll get the choppers. How can it work? What did you say prior to all of that? I was reading this. You said something that you wanted me to say. Is there anything we can do to help? Oh, okay. Sorry. I think you said hugs and kisses. Excellent. Okay. I really miss you, Jay. Jay. Thank you. I think about you. Cool. Not creepy. No, no, not creepy. Okay. So, basically, the phone message is going to read. Jay, it's siren near 1 a.m. Any advisement on Shadowman's next target, is there anything we can do to help your current situation? Good. Here we go. Five minutes. Stop watching. Okay. Hold on. I have to... I need a piece of the mirror that Jay looked into. Here you go. Daniel's got it. Kind of strange. The present's supposed to set key, and then do you want any modifiers? First time you're doing it, sure. Let's say, how many days do you have? It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. It shouldn't matter. Minus two. Next time you do it, it'll be minus one, and next time you do it, after that, it'll be perfect. But, it should be plus one if I know that the target's full legal name. What's his name? Jay Alton. Oh no, sorry. Jay Alton. If you add somebody, it's Jay Claire Alton. All right. That's one. So minus two for the unfamiliarity with the hieroglyphs in the spell in general, plus one because you know his full Christian. Which is not Jay. Actually, it's not Jay, Jay. Ironically, Jay is his first initial, but people have called them Jay that it's become his name. But somebody here knows, by the way, and he's my favorite. And he's not crucial. Right. His full Muslim name. Excuse me. Yeah. It's every minute I get to do it. Here she goes. Oh, yes. Good. Yes. Rollin' up again. How much? How many dice did you roll? Eight. Eight dice. How many successes did you get? Five. How many successes did you need? Five? Yes. Five. All right. I mean, usually it's one success. One success. One success. We have five as exceptional. It does something like that. It does something exceptional. So, what ends up happening is... I think we need to call it something else. I really do. You have a voicemail. Yeah. You're whispering. You're doing your incantation. You burned the paper. It swirls down in little ashes onto the mirror. And at that moment, going to the hedge, chew. You throw your badge deep into the gullet of this endless world-eating snake. Yes. Fuck it. And you guys see a shimmering rectangle appear as if you should step through. And on the other side of that rectangle, you see, from an odd perspective, it almost looks as if Silver Bell is looking down on you, like, through the opening. And you hear the words in your head that they had written, and there's a gateway that opens up right in front of you. Jay, it's siren, near 1 a.m. Any advisement on the Shattered Man's next target. Is there anything we can do to help your current situation? That's to hear in your voice. You see her looking down on you, mumbling. It was a gate. Yeah, it's just like, the rectangle was kind of an odd, like, off-kilter. And it looks as if you could see her standing as if, like, she's looking down on the gate. Like, almost like you'd climb up through the gate if you would. That's how you're seeing it. It's a shimmering outline. What you see is Silver Bell in the ceiling of the hotel room that she's standing in. It looks like the hotel Amsterdam. You hear her words in your head, and you feel like you can step through this gate, hopefully, into where she's at. Well, I do attempt to step through the gate. But what I try to do is, as I'm stepping, I lean towards the gate, put my hands on either side as if I'm going to pull myself up, and I pull myself with my hands head-first through. Right. Because it looks like their universe is off-kilter from Mars. It is, yeah. Incredibly off-kilter. And what's right? I try to do that first. In the hotel room, see, as you see Jay, the best way to describe it, is if he were almost like an origami piece of paper, two-dimensional and folded, and he unfolds into this dimension that comes out of the gateway, and you pull yourself up into the hotel room. And you feel what you can see, too, and as you are concerned, is you can see Jay climbing up into the hotel room, and I would assume that you're scrambling to do the same thing as that. I look like other shit, a little bit high. Only one eye is very red, the other one is closed. And bloody. Yeah, we're all now scrambling to grab ahold of them and yay. I'm turning it around and facing the chart and trying to help whoever's next. Right. So. So. Outcomes too, and then outcomes. Edgard, last. Again, you have that effect where, I mean, this piece of glass is about this, it's about the size of maybe. Came out of the glass. They came out of the glass. They came out of the glass. They came through the glass. Oh, a pretty large piece, he said. It was a pretty large piece, but it was only maybe a foot, a third of a meter for our international listeners. They're almost like an origami piece, a paper that can start to unfold into themselves as they come through the mirror. So two comes into the room, and then right afterwards, Edgard follows. Jay looks absolutely like shit. I mean, he looks absolutely beat and bruised and battered. Edgard and Chew don't look much better, and you distinctly get the impression at looking at either any of their eyes that they're completely high. I was still. Oh, we're still high. Yeah. I didn't have. I'm still smoking. I see. I see to Dr. Ethan and Katie, check him out. Try again. Sorry. No, that's they're dying on the floor right now. It's awful. It's awful. You know, Dr. We're still smoking. Yeah. And there's like a building of smoke in here like, oh, okay, great. Great job, crew, because for a second that gate was pointing somewhere else, I thought it was our Cleveland, but then it snapped to you guys when it anchor our gates. Did we just steal them from an entity? Are they in the middle of talking with some type of giant lizard woman? No, don't worry about it. She brought us here. We were going through a gate, I think. Okay. Okay. So with Silverbell, who did something, I think she pulled the gate to you guys, which that's fantastic. That's a great job. I bet you said you're just going to talk to me on the plane. She headed and accepted us. Yeah. We found it. Okay. Did you track down the shadow man? Oh, yeah. We did that just as soon as we got off the giant spiky tree, asshole. Does anyone need I explain what happened to us. We encountered the shadow man. We fought him. He defeated us rather easily, took us to his lands, stuck us on a tree. We managed to escape there and then Edgard and apparently Silverbell worked together to get us home. Other than his eye. Other than his eye. Yeah. And Edgard? He opened the gate on his end. You anchored it on this end and I don't know. Okay. That's what it worked. For two of us. What? A kid's still going to disappear. It's one o'clock. Oh, fuck. Let's go. Does anyone in need of medical intelligence? No, that can wait. Coffee? I can't stop it all coming back to the regular world. Do you have any kind of stimulant that you can give them that can I help us through? Actually, I reach in my bag and do that thing and heal myself. Edgard smoked it all. Hold on. The injection? The heals you? No. No. It's different. It's a smear that I put on whatever's damaged. So I'm like... I was like, you only have one eye left? You know. It's a poultice. Okay. Yeah. Oh no. Yes, I do that stimulant. Just in the fight. And inject them into see their soap room up or... No, I'm fine. I'm fine. Let's go. All right. Oh, okay. I almost said you were in charge of that. Okay. Here you go. You wore it in the bag. I know. Do we still have it? Do we still have it? You don't need to come. Slashes through your health or your bashing, right? Does it? How long does that take to heal? 15 minutes. 15 minutes. Do we heal it all from when we got the tree? I'm assuming that's when we took most of the bashing damage, right? Correct. We could actually rest and all you really did was sit down, smoke a joint. That's how it went. More if you're ready. Sing correct. And then what? Do it on their land. Okay. But there's no visible wounds on their bodies from being stuck to a thorn tree, right? Or is that all against their spirit or soul? No. There's nothing you can see. Okay. Don the chase here and she's going to let them find out something. So. True. I'd like you to stay here with the research crew anyways. You've got that special talent of yours. That might be helpful in some way. Yes. That's the one. Daniel and I, whoever, Edgard, you up for a no? Yes. So about you coming? What's up? You're ready for a rematch? You're going to tell us how to beat this guy's fucking ass. I've got bashing in my last three boxes. That's minus three, right? Yep. Any action you're trying to take is minus three. At this point, you're taking 45 minutes to rest and just kind of catch your wind. Right. Fuck that. I'm going to rest here. If it becomes an emergency in 45 minutes, no, you're okay. I'm just going to sleep. Daniel and I can handle it, let's go. I'm high. Several kites. Everybody keeps saying you want to go, but what have you got this morning? Jackass Hill. We're going to stop a kid from being kidnapped. Yeah. Where? That's what you're going to tell us. Are you going to sit here? I'm going. Where? We won't. I'm going to Jackass Hill. You come somewhere down in the valley. They're going to tell us as we get close. Right. We're going to get the gunman on point and then we'll try to research as fast as we can and radio it ahead and follow behind to be reinforcements. Yeah. Yes. I'm healing myself. I'm going. By the way, Jack, do we find his weapons at the Western Union or do they have the weapons with them, so do we need to give them new weapons? Remember, they try to shoot the inside of the glass thing? They have their guns. So they have regards with them? Okay. I just want to make sure that they have their gear. I won't show you right, Jackass. My shotgun back. I would also like to point out, just because, again, lots of time has passed since we played our three venture years in real life has passed, shoe tracks down serial killers. It's what he does. Now the shattered man may or may not be killing these children, but his investigation, one of like one of the talents of his investigation skill is solve enigmas. He's just he's really well suited. I know he's wounded and he may choose to stay behind on his own accord and this mission is the leader. You'd be thinking, fucking choose my right hand man. I'm not going out into that area without my best tracker, my best enigma solver, my best investigator and the best key tracks, super natural serial killers for living. So can we give him a shot of the shattered man, the piece of the shattered man, at least we think it is a piece of the shattered man. And does he have like the psycho, your your psychometry? Yes, psychometry. He has the ability to solve enigma. I mean, he could put together all the names and the places and the age of the victims a snake, dude. I was now to the tree for I don't know how long. So let's live through work actually. So we've got a kid out there, do you remember your childhood? This kid's going to go through the same thing. Is anyone in a war childhood? Yeah, we do. Oh, a little bit. We kind of want to stop that, don't we? I don't know what's going on. I've been out of it. I've been in a different. He's high. Look at that. And he's a little bit high. Before we head out there and try and find this kid and everything, we still have two children. I thought those children were. I'm pretty sure this sister ate them. Yes. Whatever happened to those kids. They go outside and play. In the traffic. They are at the hotel Cleveland. Uh huh. They are being taken care of around the clock due to the payments of Ethan Clark. Just saying. And you pay the staff there to take care of them. Seeing as high you guys have now escaped the hedge with a shadow man, he might be pretty pissed off and want to. All right. So how much time do we have? Nobody knows. Nobody knows for sure. It's the witching hour. You know what that is? Probably within the next few hours is what happened. That's why I want all of you soon. It's when the guys stop drinking. So if you don't want to calm down and exercise them about you don't know what, can you pick up the kids and bring them to this apartment? Be mine safer. Why? I've had this conversation before. Well, yeah. They're better up being anonymous. Okay. But the shadow man was set up there, right? So somebody knows we're up to shit. Otherwise they wouldn't. You wouldn't. The only place I know that the shadow man has been is in and around Jack Hashill down in the flats, what we call the Western Union. And the Western Union. And the kids aren't mean either of those, but how did you know you guys are going to be in the Western Union? Just curious. Did you ever think that maybe there was a trap? It was on the mirror. It wasn't prevalent until I could actually talk to you, but now I can't. There was a fucking trap on the mirror with my name written on it like someone knew I was going to be there. Your name written backwards on it like I was going to be there and read it and it was bullshit magic that I don't know much about. I imagine at this time you guys explained the guy who knocked on the back door to us. Yeah. Oh, there was probably one of those guys. What did he say? Do you have that quote? I have it. I'll let someone who actually takes notes for the group say. Give me a moment here. I'm going to spend one willpower and heal myself and my role is nine dice. Is there any minuses? You'll be healed. You need real damage healing or is it just bashing? It's just bashing pretty much. Yeah. I'd like real damage. One second. Do you feel that you've lost a little bit of faith in your powers? Quite possibly. It's pretty bad. Then it was an utter failure. I assume now that I'm back on earth as it were or that it should work, but there's probably a lingering doubt. Some trepidation. Is it one heal per or are you going for one success you need? I think it's the more successes of more healing. Okay, let's go with just a minus one since you removed from the dimension where that happened. That's got to be some reassurance of I'm back on my own turf. It probably just failed because I was in the hedge, right? There's at minus one, but I was going to give you a minus two or a minus three, but I think it's... I tend to take a minus three because of my eye in anything that's related to vision, but this really isn't. It isn't. Right. Thank you for listening to Knights of the Night Actual Play podcast. And back with the rest of the group in 1935, I believe that Silverbell was researching some type of power to try to be able to contact the missing- Well, I was searching for a power to contact him, but the last thing I was doing was searching for actual information on what it was so that we could actually supply him with information from the contact. And she was being aided by Daniel- Ella. Michael- What kind of- You said, do you know anything about this subject? Can you help search? And I was like, I can't even contribute. I think it was a hoebe. I think it was a hoebe. It was a hoebe too. Daniel was there. It was Ethan Clark. Ethan Clark and Michael Clay and Sister Katie, I believe, were- I think you offered Ethan and Michael some of his hoebe, if that helpful. Right. Okay. I don't recall it. I hate it all. Fuck. That's- I would call it a hoebe. Right. Because the hoebe conversation is obviously more important. I thought Clay stayed behind at the hotel to do- I was. Research on the ritual. Yeah. But you had eventually returned to the hotel. You had wrapped up your mission at the library. I sure as fuck didn't. He's with me. You did not. They wrapped up. Yeah, they wrapped up the mission at the library and we're heading back to the- You were back at the hotel. Yeah. You got back. I'm gonna say you got back. Okay. Just like that. You were looking at the- You were looking at the- Right. And you gave us some information but it's super vague so I certainly wasn't enough. Right. I recall that you left that up in the air. Right. To decide what we learned or did not learn. Right. She was researching something and she needed some further information on hieroglyphics because- Right. That's where she had found some new type of, let's just say spell to use a generalized term. But she couldn't decipher some of the hieroglyphs. She was a journal from an archeologist that she had come upon. Okay. And I thought I was researching the band. You were researching three different pieces of Latin and they had brought you back several books on Latin translations if not mistaken. Yeah. Like I was having trouble with French Latin. Right. Well, Latin with- Yes. Older, French Latin. Right. Those merivigines. Nice. Technically those are shortwave but that's- Okay. Yeah. I'm not sure exactly. It's a hieroglyph. Shortwave is good for, it's not good locally. It's good for like- Longer distance. 100 miles away and further. Right. Okay. Good call. So if you have the short term or the short distance walkie talkies. Can I check just a minute here? Because you might not remember but two adventures ago we found a journal and it was to us a blank thing. Yeah. The blank, oh yeah. The silver with the silver hammer. In my journal with you that might jar in your mind that journal. In fact, I'm the one that's carrying that journal. Ince. My point. What? Journal, what? From a previous story- Can I never show that go? Journal? That was completely- What's your dad's? Wait. We found that at her dad's house. Yes. No. I showed it to her. Dad's parents. Garage. Garage. It's believed to be your father's. But he was in these white and they were totally floored because it looked like it should have been contained. Both with all these other important artifacts? The first time we played I showed it to Silver Bell. Like, can you make any sense of this? She said it's a blank journal. Right. Oh, thanks. That's what she said. Right. Absolutely. I didn't know. She said. But did we also show her the silver hammer? We didn't bring it. You showed her any of the artifacts. Okay. Hold on a second. Sorry. She's talking to herself. She does, by the way, I mean, so. Can you bring us back a pizza? We're very hungry. Yes. No. They don't make pizza in this deck. They don't make pizza in the hedge. They don't make pizza in the hedge. Because that's like bird cake. Not bird cake. The hedge kind of sucks. There's only little seeds if you don't want it. It's a pizza. Is it that there? It's one of the best pizza. Okay. I haven't had it since I was, I don't know. Six. I told them to throw me the idol and I'll throw him the rope. What? I'm sorry, I guess what? I'll be funny in 50 years. You're being an idiot. No, what? They're really missing, Jay. Tammy. You're making magic. Not creepy. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Do you have a car one thing? It's not scary. Oh, that voice? Yeah. I made a voice surprise in my life. I'm not going to lie. Okay. Give her a second. She's trying to talk. Okay. Give her a second. Give her a second. She's trying to talk. What's up? No. Actually, you should finish. I just was going to say since you completed your goal, you should make another one before we do anything else. That's all. Good point. Actually, I got two for. Yeah. I'm reunited with the crew. Stop taking me. And I escaped. Oh, before we go. Oh, here you go. I get an experience point actually. I also need a comment about two short-term. How many three points do you have now? I have two. You can spend them any time you want. I have experience left over from the last session, but we were on a different system. I'm not sure how they're trying to do this. How many experience points do you have at that point? 15. I'm going to go on a one for five basis, so three experience points from last time. I really got to spend mine. I've got like four experience points. That's in this game. That's actually a lot. It is. It's an attribute. I have one, two, three, four cards. Thank you. I've got nine beats and two experience points. Ready? Ready? Ready? Ready? Can I hear you? Is there someone else coming through this case? Should you close the portal? Okay. She's texting. Oh, MG, what's happening? Mick Fleetwood was the artistic inspiration for the Muppets. That's what we're looking for. For animal. For animal? Yeah. That's going on the end of the clip. That's her feedback. Interesting fact. Yes. Our factoid of the day. Sure. Walsh was. Oh, I'm sorry. John, did you go all your time? John, did you go all your time? John, did you go all your time? John, did you go all your time? I'm not sure. I'm not sure. Is this Rolling Stone or a nice turn? I got the Rolling Stone. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Also, the Eagles, you know, young. All right, let's start taking the over-underwind. John probably blows a gasket and kills us all. I'm angry. Well, you're not going to kill me. We actually like each other. So, the rest of you are fine. You know, that's what Teela said to her brother before she... I never attacked him. And on the feedback. We had a nice heavy sigh. He just interrupted. I think guys are right there and you just left them. Kids are saying, "Help!" Wait, wait. Wait, let's look at that. There's no one you know. You're so good at it. You're so good at it. I don't hear it. I'll poke my eye out. No, it was called Leatherman, but I just saw it was a full-page ad in real simple. I almost like cut it out and it back-framed for you, Mike. You should at least take a picture. Did you have a geek-assum? I should. I did not. I'm not really... Mike would have saw it perhaps. Oh, yeah. Wasn't it Pink Leatherman? I used it yesterday. It wasn't Pink. It was all metal. It was the... It had some fans. You don't have like a... I love them in bracelet. They do now. They do all sorts of cool stuff, you know? Charms that like come out for screwdrivers and stuff. Well, that sounds a little weird when you say it like that. It's more of a manly... Madical... It's more of a manly... We meant like you're saying it was a woman bracelet. No. But they had a bracelet. It's all... Is there such a thing? It's like that paracord bracelet. I'm pretty sure the Leatherman Club meets on Thursday. Right. Right. Wrong podcast again. Go ahead. Again. I was doing the Simpsons thing with... Oh, sure. Here. Here. Look at you failing at pop culture. That's cool. Scott never does that. Anonymous? No. It's feedback. It's email. They have to have an email at us. Not anonymous. Not anonymous. Hotmail.com.
