It’s library time. Time to get some knowledge on the Shatteredman. At least for 4 of the party members. Two of the others are going off to grab a mirror from Western Union and Sister Katie is watching the kids – WHAT?!?!

[Music] Hello and welcome to Nights at the Night Actual Play Podcast. This world of darkness story, The Sin Eater, was written and run by your storyteller Scott. And now, please enjoy episode 206, titled 1-800-TI-DURO. Actual play begins immediately. [Music] This is the world of darkness story, The Sin Eater, how many storytellers Scott and with us tonight, on my right news. I like go play Ethan Clark, the medical doctor and native of 1935 with the checkered past. Tom playing Jay Alton, member of The Ascending Ones and leader of The Squat. I am Jim King Kinyokaner, member of the Malius Maleficarum and Tinted Nun. Mike playing Michael Clay, the academic adventurer from the Aegis Kydorro. Thomas playing Edgard Montes, if we're doing the practitioner, and a member of the William Stairs conspiracy. John playing Daniel Morgan, a mountain man turned mercenary, an ex-member of Task Force Valkyrie. Rachel playing Grace Rockman or Silverville, the same old apathetic teenager. Let her know when she gets back, but my protected area in this house, in this room that we're in, last for a day, they got like five, six. I think they need to have a over power up with a six on whatever they had. We're all still here to finish this revolution. Michael Clay, Daniel Morgan, and Ethan Clark are going to go to the library. Depending on how well this works, it'd be really interesting to get a leg up on binary hex eventually when we get that mirror. Getting one step ahead of this guy would be great. Yeah, I still think that's a lower priority. I know it is, but tonight, but you're right. It doesn't change. I mean, the mirror is going to be there. Yes, I just wanted, we're being blood around by the nose by this guy, and I'd like to get one step ahead of him. We're being blood around those by a lot of people. Anybody who's got a good redone, get a leg up on. Anybody who's got a good redone, people. Go to church with me for an hour while I get convenient and talk to the church for a minute and go. Do the only person here who has that, and you don't have a job for that hour. No, I got you. I don't think, I don't know if the church will have a problem with you or not in this day and age. I don't think so. I mean, you shouldn't. What Jay and Michael, when you guys were doing your interview, the area, I guess just the whole area there. Jack S. Hill, is there other mirrors that we could use for information, like a band and autos, or... I don't know what else band and autos. We didn't really go into any of the other hovels or the shacks that were there. We have the other names. We could go back. My point is there has to be other mirrors around that place that would be useful to... At the very least, I'm sure you're coming and going. I'm not sure how this works. At the very least, I'm sure that each of the missing children's families have the leftover mirror just like with Edith. She goes into a trance for what seems to be about a third minute or so. So there was two minutes, and then you noticed after the second minute, the look in her eyes changed, like where it all seemed like she was looking at something further away than the mirror. And that lasted for about another minute or so, another 60 seconds or so. And then she comes back with a slight gasp of breath. Have they ever been to anything? Not that they've told you. Not that they've told me. We're waiting. Where she saw. Well, I don't quite know how I misread it. Actually, before you start, do we need to now cover the mirror if she's done using it? Oh, the particular mirror. I don't know, but the sister had covered the other mirrors on the realm of blankets. Alright. I think it's safe to say that we should follow the shattered man lead of yours. How many children were missing? Six, I think. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, which is eighth going tonight, maybe. Okay. Apparently I'm rolled up. But he's definitely taking the children. I'm not sure he's using them before, but the hedge is a pretty real place. It seems that they're being hung in trees. A very dark, evil-looking place. Well, first off, all the children are still alive. I don't know. She's still alive. The latest will take it. I think so. Okay. From trees or a tree. Trees, a forest, a giant, giant forest. It's not around here. It's almost as if the trees are alive somehow. Around this time it was known as the forest city. Even direct, Cleveland was called the forest city back in the 19th. But what city? Well, it was time. The forest, it's still even alive. It's almost as if they're being held by these trees. They're covered in thorns too, with branches. I don't know if they're all alive. This doesn't give you any kind of unerring sense of direction toward them. I've never seen any place like this before. And you couldn't lead us to that? I couldn't lead you to it. No. Do you think it's a physical place? Yes. It's not the hedge or whatever you call it. It seems to be a physical place. A magical physical place. Because they've got living trees. Okay, whole things. I really don't know what to say. Sorry, I cannot be. I gave you the description. You didn't give me the description, but I don't know if she would know if they're not. It was a magical or a physical place. That's all. Well, fair enough. I think that she's never seen endless trees that had absolutely no leaves on them or bare branches that were wrapped around like the wood was actually pliable, but yet so thorny. So she's never seen anything like that before. And it seemed like a physical place. But it did not seem like it was the other world. Well, I would have to say that... Like it was otherworldly, but it was not. It was definitely a place that you could go to. Right, exactly. But you're familiar with the underworld. So you have some idea that there are places that are physical, but yet very different. Or very hard to get to. It's not part of the normal world that people go and can see. You would have to know what you're looking for if you were trying to find it. Did you see how Edith was taken? No, I don't see how things in the past happen. Edith is either correct. So at this moment right now, Edith and all the children are being held captive. Like captive, presumably alive, not sure. In a living forest, bare of leaves, full of thorns. The sky wasn't a different color. It was all dark. I mean, it was just a very dark, dismal place. Is that something like the hedge you mentioned with the B guy? Well, I remember the hedge. It was just a... The hedges were green though. It felt like more like a warp in time and space. These trees were all dead. But these trees were all dead. Povered in thorns. Did you see the shattered man? It was almost as if they were living in a sense that they were holding these children. They were wrapped in the branches. Right. You know, you saw the children. Did you see the shattered man? No. He says children. Did you see children? Or children? I saw children. Okay. So if you didn't see him, presumably he didn't see you. Did you witness or... Was there any distinctive feature other than the forest? Was there like a stone or an obelisk or a structure or a house or anything like that? Nothing like that. Just the thorns. These branches were covered in thorns. That's something you can look up in your... Well, it gives me a little bit of a theory that this might be a place where the children... It was almost like a larder. They're being stored, which might suggest that... Kept alive, but barely. This isn't a place where the shattered man maybe lives, but it's where he goes to and puts the children. So that guy might, for all we know, be in this world or... Just using this as like a... I could see the shattered man if you want. Is that another? I think... Could do it again. Another three minutes. We might not necessarily want her to do that now. We might want to do that closer to the witching hour so we know where we can find him. If he's taking another child. Well, you just performed. Oh, you said that you couldn't help their lives, so you don't know if they... I heard whimpering near the end. Oh, you did hear something. I thought you couldn't hear it. No, I couldn't hear. I heard whimpering. Did they notice you or were they aware of your presence? No. No, they can't see me. They have no idea that I can see him. I'm just saying that if she doesn't reveal her presence, maybe it's worth getting a view of the shattered man. I don't know what it cost you. I can do it. Okay. Okay. I mean, I like your idea closer and we can ask you to do it again. I don't know. Are we taxing your interests? Well, what are we getting by peeking in on him? Well, if it's what I might have a very loose theory that if this is a place where these children are being kept and stored, then we can maybe see... She said that she could see at this point in time, immediately, where the shattered man is. If he's in the skies or if he is here, we might get a visual before the scripture. My only fear, and I think Ethan has it as well, is he looks through mirrors. That's what he does. His power, I imagine, is probably... It's a risk. I mean, well, he travels through mirrors. And it sounds to me like he... What there must be. I don't think he travels blindly through mirrors. He must have some way... He can only travel through a mirror that has a crack in it. Or he cracks a mirror to travel through it. I don't know. I don't know, but... Well, if he is the shattered man, the assumption is maybe he shatters the mirrors by traveling through them. I don't know. I thought... He's the mirror... He's going to travel through a shattered man because he is the shattered man. Mm-hmm. Well, I know something that might be able to clarify that. Let's go to the library. Well, right. I guess that's... I'm trying to collect all the information from her that I came to help my research. I want to ask you a question before we split up. That's a really good idea. Have you guys ever taken down a spirit of this sort before? This sort of piece. Certainly not. Oh, no. I mean, can they be killed? Or is all we can do is push him away. So he will effectively... The spirit of this one is going to kill the banish. Yeah, I mean, we can probably banish it for a amount of time and keep the world safe, but I mean... That's better than not. Yeah. I just wanted to know what bans did. Red, I don't know what he's doing or leading up to, but he's doing something with these children. Whether it is using them as a power source, replacing them with whatever. I was just wondering what good we could do. I have one more question for Silverbel. Were all the kids intact? Yes. They weren't... They were bleeding. But as far as their body parts? Yeah. Okay. All right, so Michael Clay, Ethan, Grace, and Daniel. Library. I got nothing to do until nine o'clock. Who's going to... You should watch the children banish, haven't you? No, she shouldn't. Yeah. Ethan's known her for... It's actually bad with kids. Oh, please. Oh, yeah. She's horrible with kids. You say this place for them is inside the circle? Yeah, I think we should get them someplace where we can watch them. I think Sister Katie wants to go back to the church. Not until nine, though, she said. That's when I have a night service where I can take you... Right now, after that ceremony in the conversation, 7-30, what's that? So we got about an hour and a half. Well, before we leave the apartment, I put some bed sheets over any mirrors in the... In the guys room, as well. Yeah, in the guys room, right? I didn't hear. No, that's fine. The girls room it was done, but not the guys room. So, that's fine. Yeah, I don't know that we want to do this again with him as the target. Here. Not now. Not in here. Because when we do, you know, we're giving away that bit of information that we're here and we're against him and... That'll be the last one I think if we do it at all. I think we want to draw his attention as the witching hour approach is to hopefully save the child. Sure. Or for a while. And the witching hour. The rhyme said, you know, the darkest hour of night... I'm going by Michael Clay's knowledge that... That typically is... 3 a.m. Well, I've heard is the witching hour, which is 3 a.m. That's what you mentioned earlier. Okay. That's what I've heard is also the darkest hour of night, so... Anything else? But, you know what? If I need to roll to verify that or... Did the mom say you just want to go with it? What time did it happen? Not any contrary information on the inner books, that's good. Right. And it was just once the men folk had stopped drinking. Uh-huh. So, that meant late at night. But how late? Yeah. She doesn't know because she's poor. She doesn't have a clock in her lean to. Michael Clay would definitely... I mean, the witching hour could be mid... It depends on the culture and... That's true. Where we were really researching. So, the witching hour could mean anything from when the sun goes down to midnight to 3 a.m. It could be anything. So, until you actually nail down exactly what you're looking for, it's like all myths and urban legends and, you know, nursery rhymes and fairy tales. Folklore. There's a grain of truth, and then there's lots and lots and lots of BS you have to sort through to really get to where you want to go. Anywhere between 9 and 3 o'clock in the morning. Great. Give or take. We need the kids brought here, Edgard, and myself can't do that. And I don't trust a sister. I do so. No. So, Ethan, could you go get the children and bring them here and they go to the library? With these gentlemen. Work those children... They're at the Clevelander, the expensive hotel store, right? The hotel, correct. Right. So, where are we going to deal with them here when we leave to go? We're going to put them in the ladies room where a shield has been erected to keep them safe. I don't see them. I'll work on. You don't see that that's what? I don't see that that's any safer than where they're at right now. They're in a totally unrelated part in a rather posh hotel that's unlikely to have. Correct, Mayor's? I mean, he's working at the other side of town. I don't see where bringing them. I kind of agree with you. Bringing the kids to us is going to be... Well, we have the sister just erected a barricade for the next how long? Day. Day is going to keep that room safe. We can cover all the mayors. They're not going to do that there. I just think we can keep them safer. Sure call. They're looking for these children? Crazy. I dragged them here unintentionally. I'm just saying right now they're anonymous and elsewhere. I dragged them out of a fire and there's something where they could get killed still, so I'd prefer if we could bring them here. I agree with the responsibility for the children, so if you could please bring them here. All right. I'll go to that. You're spoken. Okay. So you head back to the hotel Cleveland and the children have been well taken care of for the day. Fed, lots of play. Obviously they're still confused and disoriented and they don't really understand. There's a few questions from the nanny. These children have they seen a doctor recently? Because they're saying things that make no sense to her whatsoever. And she's very confused by it, but they're lovely children, but so... Sir, bet you're crazy. She's encouraging you. I don't know where to pee us. I like to have those on the phone. So she encourages you that the children, you know, may be in some sort of shock or that they may have been through something. Are you the father? You know, they're asking questions. You're able to just easily bluff your way through. She has no authority. Okay. She probably wants them out. Look at my subterfuge. Right, zero. Yeah, I did. Yes. Absolutely. Just go back to whatever you were doing. And then you get the kids together and you take them to where, back to the Amsterdam. Is that where the dogs are? 'Cause that wherever they're at, I'm checking on them. Yeah, the dogs were in the... Back of the truck. No, not in the back of the truck. They were in that hotel that was really the flop house. The one that I was in, sure. Don't bring them. I'll go fix the dogs. In the time that it takes Daniel to head back to the hotel, I would like to use that time to place a few phone calls using the local phones and see if I can get in contact with anyone. Or my organization in this time period. So at least pave the way that, look, I need someone to open the library for me. Right. Who are you calling? What photo are you using? Well, let me go with this. I thought about this. I'm very interested. One egg. Okay, Duro. Part of my whole conspiracy is that we've been around for 2,000 years. Yes. Specifically, I was in charge of documenting as part of the order of the scroll. And as an initiate of the first order, I would have knowledge of where our places are. In particular, I knew, based on Nico, the Cleveland Library and access to those files. So I am familiar with who was in charge or our local people in charge of that. So I'm racking my brain to go, look, is there a young Nicodemus here? Not Nicodemus. Nicholas. I'm thinking, all right, old man Corothers was in charge of the library way back when I know that this seems been around for decades, or if not decades, at least a century. Maybe that's a place to start. Also, I specialize in these ancient records, so I kind of know where our repositories for these ancient records would be all over the place. What? I mean, sure. I mean, Cleveland's not exactly a hot spot of-- No, but it's my just kind, Doru lore. But there was the reserve section, Cleveland Public Library, the restricted section of the Cleveland Public Library that you were aware of. Now, this is 1935. Right. It's not as if you went around asking questions about when you did your research. You didn't-- What was the password? No, no, five. But, Nicolai was there with me in shit luck. Yeah, absolutely. And I'm like, OK, we contacted him, and we got permission to go there. So I'm trying to remember, well, who do we call for that? And are they still around? I think you'd have to go to the library to find out. I mean, you could also call the library. Well, all I'm trying to do is trying to save us a little time. Well, if she was going to be gone for an hour getting the kids, I thought I could look through the phone book or-- Just two ideas. First question is, does your conspiracy go from generation to generation of a person? Do you tell your kids about it and train them, or you just get initiated in and out of nowhere? Yeah, it's a little boat. Yeah. You can look for the ancestors of the people who were in the area. OK. And I also think you know where the main big library has been forever. You can call that library and ask who do I call in this area to get access? You can dial Athens if you'd like. We're a secret organization that's been around in the school. I'm not telling that. I mean, you have a way to get it. You get information. I just don't know if you have a way to get it in one hour. So, you start researching that. OK. OK. And then-- Do you understand what to say or not? To be fair, I don't-- Either I could remember it, or I couldn't. I don't know. I wouldn't be able-- how would I begin to research it? You know what I mean? Well, I think your first idea would be to be looking up the phone number of the Cleveland Public Library and be calling the restricted section and try and remember what the guy's name was that the ego had set you up with. First of all, let's say the clock at night. So, that's why I didn't think that was-- Go. I'm going to go to the library now. It doesn't matter if it's eight o'clock at night. I'm going. OK. So, it is around eight o'clock at night. The library on Thursday night is most likely closed. I'm sure you can't. That's fine. Wait, wait a second. Sure. I'm not going to condone her breaking into our private archives if we've got archives there at this time period. I don't know. But, you're not going to tell me. At the same time, I wanted her along to help, but I can't. So, basically, you guys are talking about the Cleveland Public Library. Mm-hmm. I have a contact there called Konstantin Kutter-Kiedes. Completely. I don't know what that is. And he-- Is it a metal bill? OK. Wait, a very holly. I just want to talk to you. I'll talk to you. I'll talk to you. I'll talk to you. You're talking out loud. You're talking out loud. You said very loud. Fair enough. You're mentioning the Cleveland Library, and you've said you're going to go there and you have ways to get in. Then he says, "Wait a second. I've got a contact. There is a restricted section." So, the three of you head off to the Cleveland Public Library. I think four. Daniel is going to be his muscle. Daniel-- oh, they waited. If that's nice. Daniel went and got the kids, and then came back. Fine. Then everyone goes to the Cleveland Public Library around that. I thought it's getting dark. So, is that a-- You wanted to be interested in-- Daniel, the mirror. You really want to go out solo and steal a mirror from someplace? Do it. Kind of what I do. Not the solo. It'd be very helpful. But I'm-- Sticky. Subtle. This is just going slowly insane. I think I have to take her to the church. So, you can either go with us, or you're going to have to do the solo. I think I can-- well, what if I get arrested? No, I can do this. That would definitely be more interesting. But, just to make sure I can get dark, get my black clothes, get my pick box. If I'm not mistaken on all your good stuff. The Western Union is not far from the church, is that not correct? There are relatively close to each other within probably five minutes walk. And take a radio with you. Mayor may not be within radio distance. We have three radios. Daniel take one, Edgar take one, and I'll take one. And if we can reach each other, great. If you're in trouble, call for help if not. When I get the mirror, do I just go to the church and wait in the truck for you guys to get out? Do I book it back to the hotel? If it's a large mirror, it'll be easier to put it in the back of the truck under a blanket. We'll take one along. You think it can be installed, right? Yeah, I got that big circuit. Yeah, it's that. Don't crack the mirror. That's not going to play it. Alright, we'll start off at the Cleveland Public Library. You made a quick phone call, Ethan, to your contact. Because you have some pull and some weight. Can you meet you up front? Mr. Carter Keating. Ethan, good evening. How may I be of assistance? He looks up your traveling companions a bit and then focuses back on you. We have a need for a few hours of research and make it worth your while. I guarantee that there won't be any damage or anything missing. The restricted section is very important to us. And your friends, I know not. I step forward and introduce myself and I assume I'm asking, is there a way that... You can say things that let him know. You're right. So I say our ritual greeting and I also communicate to him that I am an initiate of the first order. He seems quite impressed and he seems much more comfortable at this point in allowing four of you in since he hasn't met this individual before, but he says the right things. So he leads you into the library. However, I don't want to pass this opportunity up. If I may, do you have children Constantine? Not yet. I hope to someday. Large Greek family. Good. Many children. So he leads you into the restricted section, opens the door, lights a few candles for you or lanterns. There's a couple of wheat bulbs as well. It's mostly daylight coming through, normally speaking, this room is lit by the daylight coming through the black windows, as this is underground actually. There's not a ton of light down here to keep the books safe and temperature controlled and also not be damaged in any way. So he leads you into the restricted section and then steps outside and says, I have some reading of my own to do, so just knock at the door when you're ready and I'll escort you out. Very well. Thank you, sir. Well, the first thing we do is we look for the indexes or the codexes that tell us where all the books that we're looking for are, and I start focusing on probably the topics of Arcadia. Actually, a list of all of these that we've learned from Silverbell and from the poem, starting with like, we're looking for the hedge, the right shattered man, these trees, the descriptions of these trees I'm trying to. I would say this would be a fantastic time for anyone who would like to either make an academics or an occult role plus intelligence to go ahead and start finding out information that might be of some use. All right, any bonus for the quality of the archive? We're going to get there once everyone counts up their dice. You give us three categories. You have three other resources other than yourself there. You have Daniel, you have Grace, and you have Ethan, the rest of us are somewhere else, so I don't know if you want to assign them specific or say you three are working. I thought that's what we're doing, like we're looking at the codex to find which topics are exist, and then we're going to go, okay, you go here. I'm not going to be quite that specific, I'm just going to just make an overall role for each of you. And I don't know, Daniel's just being muscle and watching your back. First off, he's helping you. I have a specialty for academics of 1930s history, and I have to be a specialty of them. How serendipitous. Should I just do that? Are they both read us? Yes. And academics, you could take either one and apply your specialty to it. And apply it? Okay, and then I have a three for the intelligence. Okay, so you have a total of seven dice, correct? So you're at seven, Michael, what would you be at? Well, just for my intelligence and a cult, that should be six. I'm not adding and contracting yet, so you're at six. It's the highest of academics for a cult. Correct, correct. Seven. Seven, and do you have a specialty in academics or cult that would apply, which one you're using? No. Okay, so I've got a seven, seven, six. I do have a specialty in enigmas. Ethan, you can, as a member of Aegis Chidoru, you can go ahead and figure that out. You can go ahead and add one die for the excellence of this particular library. That makes sense. Michael Clay, you actually have seen a medieval manuscript with the shattered man in it. That's right. I'm going to give you two extra dice for the research for your role. And then for Grace, I'm going to keep you right where you're at because you're not a member of this particular conspiracy, and their archives are kind of geared towards their specialties. So I'm going to let you go with what you're good at, which is your specialty. So we've got, I think, eight, eight, seven. I'll go ahead and roll first. First of all, I feel a little bit better towards Ethan now, and I give him the old secret handshake. Nice. We're looking for an eight, nine, or zero, and zero with our role again. Oh, wow. Hey, before I test this, I'm not lying here. Rachel, how many successes? Three. Ethan? Zero. I have no idea what you're talking about. Hey, you got him in here. Yeah. That's what counted. Eight dice. How many successes? Six successes. And I've got three rolligans. Three, tenigans. Go ahead. Two more successes in another role again. All right. That's eight successes. No. Can you get it? Yes, you can. I've pulled that way. I've pulled the exact hook with you. What did you do? I've got that. Just rolled insane. You only got eight? Yeah, I only have eight successes. All right. We'll start with Rachel's three successes. What you're able to find, so we're about, is you're able to actually find and narrow down some medieval manuscripts, which really helped Michael a lot because there was just so many, medieval collection is the largest collection in the Cleveland Public Libraries restricted section. And you were able to really narrow down the search for him. But what you're also able to point out to him was a couple other woodcuts from that time period, which show the shattered man. And in one of the images, he is coming out of a very, a very cracked and shattered mirror. So again, same thing, cubes, angles. It's a shattered visage of a very tall creature. And this particular one that Silverbelt found that he's kind of climbing out of the mirror. You have a situation where he doesn't even look quite human. He looks very much, and monstrous. But again, still made up of the same types of elements, meaning the cubes and the angles. But what's interested in it is it's a completely different monk who had created this particular piece of artwork. It's not the same one that you had found earlier, but yet the pictures are very alike. So that led Grace to then delve deeper into this monk's background. Turns out this particular monk served in France in the 1200s, and yours is definitely a hundred years later, and from a northern monastery on the shores of the English Channel and the North Sea and someone completely different area. In a different language. I mean, they're all written in Latin, but a different type of Latin between the two. So the relation between the two is very, very tenuous. They're both monks, but then... Your point is that you have two different time periods and two different monks, but they're telling the same story. In a sense. Okay. They're religious soundings, isn't it? They're both monks, and then there's trees with thorns. What's all that really wrote back there? Yeah, I was just saying there's no one else keeping records. See now, does this woodcut of the shattered man? Is he wearing anything? Like, is there... It's a creature made up of cubes and angles. Yeah, and it has like a visage of a creature or a person that's a humanoid type creature, or a person who's very long, very thin, but yet everywhere, they're just shattered. Isn't it another made up of gopings? Sunswear, you've got... Almost, but you're talking literally, you know, seven, eight hundred years before cubism was even brought to... No words, just a picture. Just pictures? There are words, the words basically translate to prayers. So there's basically prayers of protection, which is what you had found in yours. And it's not the shattered man, but in Latin it would be described to as the broken man, is what it would be described to at that point. And there's an old Latin prayer that supposedly provides protection from the broken man. I don't suppose there's a woodcut of anyone vanquishing the broken man, is there? Well, getting to your research and what you were able to find, you found several more, not just the original one, which was... You were happy to find that, which was, again, the broken man they called him, or man in pieces. There's all different kinds of allusions to the shattered man. The shattered man, perhaps, is something a little bit more recent of a terminology for him. But in your research, your amazing research that you're able to come up with, you're able to find several more incantations, if you will, or protections from him. So you have a total of three now, one that Rachel had found, two that you had found. One that you found that was unlike the three, you found a third one that very strangely is written backwards. All of the entire prayer is written completely in reverse. As if you need to look at it through a mirror. You could read this in a mirror. It's incredibly painstakingly difficult because it's pretty long, tree-st. But it could be read that way. So you found this very interesting piece that was written completely backwards. You found several more woodcuts showing the broken man, the shattered man, the man of pieces, the glass man, just different iterations of his name, and this backward text. So we have four incantations, not three. Well, I set incantation for the fourth one, but it's almost like a tree. It really is, it's heavy. It doesn't look as poetic, if you will, as the first three. And to be honest, I'm a little bit scared to try to use a mirror to translate easily the one thing, so I wanted to take a shot at it first. Just bring it up to a mirror. No. The trap. Obviously, you're not going to be able, you know, from the past, you're not going to be able to remove this document from the restricted section. So, I haven't seen that yet. Why can't we remove it? It's the rules of the Aegis Kaidauru, which is their conspiracy, their secret society. There's no way they'll have permission to remove a medieval text. It's like asking to check out the Constitution. You know what I'm saying? No, I don't think so. They think about their actual spells in a lot of these books. They think, if nothing else, there's a lot of knowledge, and they're also six or seven hundred years old. So they take them out into real sunlight, and the real community of a Cleveland or the heat of a Cleveland summer would be very damaging to the books. They're information hoarders, too. And they're information hoarders. Yeah. All of that is the reason. Pretty much. You can take out your cell phone and take a picture. Just because you don't have reception doesn't mean your camera doesn't. Right. Your battery isn't dead yet. No. I'm going to try and just take of these four tracks that you've said are significant. Right. I'm going to at least get some kind of record. I'm also going to take some hard copy notes. I tell the others to do the same. And then we can discuss this somewhere other than here. Let's get out of the archive. Because we might be able to resolve some of these things or figure out what's a band or what's effective against the spirit. Or what might be absolute later. Anything else? That was Michael Clay. Does Silver Bell or Ethan have anything they want to? Daniel concluded. Or Daniel. Right. Sorry. We're not allowed to take out these books? No. This is a real problem. It happened apparently centuries before. I can't help but feel the keeping these books locked up in here and this information. We've found the information that we want. We'll transcribe it and take it with us. I know it could do good for us. I'm just wondering how we can disseminate it so people can use it in the future. Well, if we solve the problem, hopefully this won't be a problem in the future. These texts of thousands of years ago tell us that it will be. Yeah, but do you remember from our time? Was there any part with the shattered man? What the fuck do I know? Well, exactly. It's a big world. Let's address the immediate problem at hand and if it becomes a bigger issue, then yes, we can figure a way to disseminate this information. But let's worry about the immediate issue and then we can go to the bigger issue after we succeed. You guys can make up a nursery. Yeah. It seems like kids all know. Right. They know what's happening. So, end guard. Yes, grab a lemon, grab a candle, and do a ritual so I maybe not get seen by the cops. Excellent. Okay. Let's do it in the car. That would be messy. Good enough. You work your way down the... I don't know if you have a car. I think you might have taken your car, right? So, we're just walking to the library? How far away from the library? Which one are you in? Yeah, he's definitely further. The library's down the car just over the... Then we drove Lorraine Carnegie Bridge. You will escort you walking wise. Which blows my idea if I had any extra time I wanted to hook up our car charger to the battery of the truck so we can charge our phones. It's not a nation juice yet. So, before we leave the hotel, we have to find somebody to watch the kids while we're gone. That's what I was saying. We're not going to go wrong. We're not going to go wrong. Not out the long. Right. The style has gaps, by the way, and you have money, so... Right. Is there any late-night nannies we're going to call? Well, it's been a long day. It's 8 o'clock at night. You tell the kids to go to frickin' sleep and they go to sleep. And they leave alone in a hotel room with a mad man in the city. Sure. Well, or you stay and you let Sister do her thing and let Edgard do his thing. You're not going... I don't want to go by myself, though. Yeah, she doesn't talk to people well. I'm gonna be back in like an hour. With a big mirror. With a big mirror. They are sleeping peacefully. In case you want it to float off really quick. And you can tell the door, Amanda. Is there any problem that you're going with him and then... Hopefully he can get it done quick enough that we all meet up at the church. Maybe so. No, I don't think he wants you. So you're staying with the kids until we come back? I got it. Okay, don't wake them. Do not wake them. Or tell them any of your fun stories. I don't need your help. I touched them. Well, he's got you back. Yeah, he's just guarding. What is there to guard? I'm going to be in and out of there like five seconds. Hopefully nothing. Go. So, you're there. Don't break them. Are you going for documents or just a mirror? I'm going for documents and mirror and apparently nothing else. Okay. Just the boss is here. He's pissed. He's looking over your shoulder. So, you guys take a cab or a taxi or a walk or whatever. And you end up in this alleyway. Well, it's black in the thirties. We walk. But there is a cab and there is a taxi. And you have money as Ethan. So, uh, well, point it out. Doesn't mean they're going to stop. You have to leave the money. That's going to point you to, uh, yeah. Yeah. What ceremony are you doing before you break in? The camera will disguise. We're just simple. Crouch down. Light the candle. Say a brief prayer. You're going to do this like an alleyway to be behind one of the bins that collect garbage to knock down the window. Okay, go ahead and what do you do? I call it my typical messenger spirit. It calls up the spirits for me. Probably it doesn't work. So, I call up a generic one. Right. Then, uh, actually, these spirits are pretty, well, your contact is more recent, like something specifically to you. Mm-hmm. Or no. Uh, the spirit I call to contact other spirits for me. Yeah. Is he an agent spirit or a recent spirit? A grandfather, isn't it? It's not my grandfather. No. You don't, you can't work with the spirit until it's different. He taught me one to use, but for a woman. Yeah, sure. He's part of your religion. Sweet. I know that guy. And then he calls up the spirit for me. Yeah. And that's the spirit of anything. It's just something to make me look different and subtle and hard to see and difficult to pay attention to. So, there's a spirit that's kind of like wrapping himself around you and making you look different. Yeah. Like a perception filter. It is a perception filter. Thanks. I offer him a piece of a lemon because it's a particular, like, pungent fruit. Yes. Just cut it up with my leatherman, which we apparently all had. Yes. We offer it up to him. And then, when that's done, I douse the flame with a bit of water I draw with me. All right. And you roll your dice? I roll my four dice. Good luck. Oh, roll all ones. One, one, five. One, one, five. Zero. That's it. Roll again. Four. All right. That's a success, which has five to all my stealth rolls. Excellent. So then you stealthly move down the alleyway. Right. And then you go ahead and get out your lot. Pick set. Yep. The alleyway is pretty much abandoned, so your stealth doesn't really come to play there. But you go ahead and you work your lot. Pick. Go ahead and give your die total for the lot. Ten. Five decks. Four large to need one specialty in the last decade. Excellent. And it's dark. So, minus two dice for a big dark. There's a nine, there's a ten, there's a eight. So, three successes. Excellent. You hear the very satisfying click of the lock as you work it open. This is on the back. Yes. Not standing out in the front. Right. Pull the door open slowly. Check for any electronic, not surveillance, but alarms, because they had those back then. Break it and it goes off. You do not see any electronic alarms set to this location. Put a brick under it and I'm going. Excellent. Off to your left is a back room, if you will. Boxes and machines. And what looks to be a bunch of files. And that's off the left. And then straight ahead is the hallway leading to the entrance, the front area of the western union. And looking right at yourself is the mirror. Before it goes too deep, I put my back to the wall and my... Like I'm right next to the door that's cracked open so I can hear what's going on in there. Okay. And while you're going in, I'll tell you there might be someone in there sleeping. We don't know, so it'd be quiet. No, put the gun away and be quiet. So, what do you choose to do? Edgard, you just catch a reflection of the mirror up ahead and it just startled you for a second, because the mirror is way different than I usually do. Right. Oh, fuzzy. All right. First the files, because in my opinion, that's what we're going to need more. All right. And we've got the original thing here. The telegram. There you go. It's on the top there. In the bottom left corner, there's some kind of denotation. W, U, 1, 2, 0, 7, parentheses, R2, dash, 6, 5. So you're using name and address for reference. I think then, whatever. Using that, I'm going to look through the file system. What should I roll? I'm going to go ahead and make a intelligence plus another one. Investigation would work. Yeah. Fucking two dice. Let's do it. I'm here to steal shit. Oh, I want to do a filing very well. Six and a four. You don't want to do some willpower or nothing? No, I already won't. All right. Two dice. I thought you were allowed to add your willpower after the roll too. Can we? You can say you want to spend one, yeah? Okay. I want to spend one. Three extra dice, because those two failed me. There you go. There's an eight. I found a single thing. I'm not sure. I'll follow what the file is there. Actually, it's more of like a note cards with information written on them. So you do stumble across a note card that says B-Hacks and it has some information that's written on it. It looks like it's Western Union information, maybe a phone number, perhaps an address as well. Yeah, it looks like good stuff. All right. I pocket that. You don't recognize the phone number or the address what I'm going for. I sneak forward into the manager room. Okay, go ahead and make a stealth roll at this point, please. Well, it stacks, right? Yes. Three plus five plus another five for the magic. So, 13. 13 dice? Okay. Go ahead. No subtraction. I'm using a package. Fucking hella. Two down. Three, four, successes. Four successes? Any 10 again? One 10 again. Okay, go ahead and roll. Another 10 again. Five successes. Five successes. You are incredibly stealthy, exceptional success. If there's anybody living above this location, they do not hear you as you creep towards the corner that the mirror is located in. Again, it's located high up in the corner, which catches pretty much the entire front entryway of the Western Union office. And you see that it's connected to the wall with a couple of bolts. Pretty simple construction. I'm proud of the tools for that. I was expecting to use a screwdriver. It is higher up, though. How do you plan on working at the eight foot height of the ceiling? Alright, that's a good question. I'm not going to at all. No, you're not. Get magic for Thomas? No, I don't have magic for Thomas. There's actually a chair that you can move over and stand on. Yeah, there is, but you're not there. Well, I was going to say, look around for something. I was trying to move this along. So, boost stuff on, see if there's a chair. You find yourself a chair, you put it in front, you go up to the mirror, you get up your leatherman to start taking off the mirror. And when your breath hits the mirror, that's what you see. Right after you see that, you see a face appear in the mirror and it is the shattered man. I'm not. And it's the end of the night. I'm not the first boy. Can we see that again or it's so bright? Well, you can see it again, sure. Thank you for listening tonight's of the night actual play podcast. If you'd like to send us questions, comments or feedback, you can reach us in a number of ways. [MUSIC] How much of an idea just on a site from the game here? Would it be to have a small and cheaper portable microphone to take with you when you go into a spot private chat and then add that audio in later into the thing? They probably should have taken the microphone. Well, I was thinking of upgrading the microphone to the zoom tube, which then we have two. Then we have two. And they could take the wand with them. What about headsets? You know, when we collect more Patreon money and we can afford such things. I don't really like wearing headphones. Yeah, well, neither. It's only fun when you work in a McDonald's contract. That's fun though. Take your order plate. It makes you feel like you're- Okay, sorry guys. [MUSIC] Uggle fish are the dogs. Yay. [LAUGHTER] It's not exactly like that. Don't kill his son little Niko. That would be bad. Come on, God. No, never mind. What I miss? It's really big. They figured it out. The solution. [MUSIC] No, I can do this. That would definitely be more interesting. I got this. I didn't say that. Did you guys already told me what that means? I said I can do this. Which I can. All right. You're friends. I know not. I know not. He's Greek. What? Wait a minute. Is Niko- I know not. Did he ship him back to Greece to get the accent and then bring him forward? Or is his grandson still in Greece and soon to come to America? He's just serving time here. [LAUGHTER] That's true. The Karakinis have long been involved in Cleveland and Greece. [LAUGHTER] That's what it says on there. It's what they say. I still know those. Can I just go on through the wall? What? I stepped forward and introduced myself. Well, I mean, you've got some to open up for you. You may not want to waste the power, but... Yeah, but if he's not going to let them just want to get in there. I'm just curious. What would Daniel's be? He doesn't have a reading level above the fifth grade. [LAUGHTER] He's a squatch. [LAUGHTER] When she... When she mentioned the 1930s specialty, I thought it was a crazy random happenstance. That's right. A lot of talk. How could that be? Does my trained observer apply to this? Read it to me again, please. I've spent years in the field catching tiny details and digging for secrets and therefore have a better chance to find "important clues." Anytime I... Oh, this is a perception roll. Never mind. Okay. Thank you. Eight dice. Sorry. I... Oh, you said eight dice? Well, yeah, I think you were at eight dice. No, he was it, but then you added two. You were at six dice and I added two because of... Oh, did I only roll? I thought he was... If I only had any one more to roll? Hey, look at that. See? Happiness. All right. Scott, healing. It's fakka. Re-roll the fakka. What the fakka? What the fakka? That means it. That's great. Okay. And, um, or silver bell 360. Actually, let's start with Ethan's zero. I want to start with what we did. And it really went back. Um, you can also say I was being guided by the spirit of Pleyball 2, so... Right. You could. Um, but I didn't. A couple of things. We've been failing to set aspirations each week. I have. I have. I have. So we should probably next week, um, focus on that. Like, because it might be interesting to listen. We should set our goals and see if we can actually reach them. A couple of things. Because I looked at mine and the three I had was, uh, get sister some healing. Well, hell yeah. Um... I did one of mine. And by the way, you get a beat. Yeah. I raced them and added beats for, you know, one of them was find everybody a place to sleep together. Well, okay. Done. Right. Right. So if anyone, yeah, before... And that punch of white dude, I still have a punch of white dude, so... Right. And it's 10.30. And it's 10.30. And I want to take care of Edgard and his, uh, it's breaking. Because that's going to happen a little bit before nine o'clock and what happens with, um, sister Katie and yourself, I believe, Jay. So, uh, Edgard, you drop him off at the alley, uh, that meets behind the, uh... Wherever you want to speak to. Okay. I don't know what the fuck... No, just make it up. Make it fun. Yeah. Crouch down. Because you breathe. What's wrong with you? It's supposed to say, right at the time when you were finding that tree stand, words being written backwards. That's when Edgard climbed on the chair. Was working a little bit hard, breathed a little bit on the mirror, and that... And that little bit of fog that came up in his breath, that's the letters that were spelled out. And then he saw the face of the chatter band, and the arm reaching towards him, and then fake the boy.
