(upbeat music) - Hello. Welcome to Knights of the Night actual play podcast. This Dresden File Story Rituals was written and run by your GM Tom. And now, please enjoy episode 188 titled, I'm not sure there's a connection. Actual play begins immediately. (upbeat music) My name's Tom, I'm your GM for this Dresden File Story Rituals. The player is here tonight, actually it's a full crew, but starting on my right is Michael playing Repo Pierce, an antiogenic, organic alchemist. Rachel playing Zalda Sykes, American Gypsy, who uses the lore of her past to construct the future. I am Jim playing Fedman Shvalski, who is a rich businessman, black court-powered scion. My name's Scott playing London Deals, a moral seer to the supernatural powers. Mike playing Alan Montgomery, the soul-sundered warden of Cleveland. Bob playing Steven Toman, a reporter and photographer, we do anything to get this story. Thomas playing Maxwell Edison and undercover homeland security doctor. John playing Roberto Martinez, people's guardian empowered by a fallen angel. When last we left, our intrepid adventurers. We had murdered someone. Had murdered someone, threatened someone else and are in the middle of a state owned by white court vampires. Well, technically it wasn't murder, we were dispensing supernatural justice. Yeah, I'm sure to tell the cops that. I'm sure the police will tell. Is this in my purview? We're going to go to the detective and we're like, we caught the guy. I was like, where is he? Robert, he's fucking dead. I don't know. Shit, didn't you promise I'm not fucking Nelson? Didn't you promise the cop you'd not go wild with this one? I can't. Well, you mean the original quest line that we were supposed to follow? When you first went to the crime scene, the cop invited you because there was all magic shit going on and he's all like, what is it, warden? Make sure you keep me up to date and what's going on and you don't get carried away. Didn't want to, you know, as far as I know, I'm not sure if there's a connection between the ritual murders and-- Well, if I could Nelson-- Yeah, he's not. [INTERPOSING VOICES] Can't the guy got away, but I killed someone else to produce hell fired and was-- I'm just saying, I had previous business with Ryan Nelson from before, so-- Yeah, just killing all the suspects. I didn't kill him before. Oh, no, that's not my role. That's someone else's role here. I didn't kill him. We didn't kill him because of the rituals. We killed him because we had a grudge from before. That works in the court law. Well, I don't answer to our normal court of law, so don't worry about it. And you won't answer to it. Then they try to arrest you. You go like, bitch, I'm a wizard, I'm not to my boss. OK. Let's do it this way. Everybody rolls for initiative. Oh, yeah. [INTERPOSING VOICES] When you roll poor dice and you avid some crack to your work-- I rolled the same thing as last time. Can we still talk about what exactly happened last time? Oh, yeah. You held the snail to him, and then I happened-- Oh, no, so the thing, like, got charged. Oh, yeah, that should area on the long river. Nobody knows what that is yet. So it got charged, and-- He did some bad magic. He was shouting evil curses, and then it seemed to bleed away into the river. We're a giant barrier when-- Nelson? Nelson, as he died. It was his last act. OK. And then the little one into the big wall bit. The Mexican guy dropped the coin. He just stood there smiling and dropped it. Yeah. Yeah, he didn't know what it went. And we didn't talk about what's going on with the vampires at all, like-- They were reacting. They were walking towards us. And they were just kind of like watching this one. No, they're swarming towards us. Swarming towards us? There is no doubt that they are still in motion towards you. Zelda, is all of this cast kind of still in line with your probability and your prophecies? No, no, no. These are still happy. I'm just trying to remember if you would have to saw this. You foresaw something happening bad like this, so-- Miss Sykes, give me a reading for the floor. It's not bad, sir. What do you hear, starboard? He's controlling all the time. I suppose really is the true obstacle, like I said, since he didn't give up the coin. And actually-- Of course not. I'm not in the way. Can you start making more sense, isn't it? Yes, yes, it does. Not great. OK, so yeah, especially the lovers inverted. And the kids were avoiding responsibility for the consequences of our own actions, a.k.a. killing Ryan Fucking Nelson and letting this thing get magnified. Feeding something, matching the funds. Mm-hmm. Let the past go and resolve to make better choices in the future is what we needed to do to succeed instead of kill Ryan Fucking Nelson. Or that we're maybe that's for the future. Never lie. It's all really not. Better choices. Geez. I thought these practices were about Robert or not me. It's funny how that works out, isn't it? It's so easy to interpret it after the event. Yeah, again, the only way to succeed in this venture is to exercise composure and great peril. We must have a plan and follow it. A slightest deviation will not allow for success. Well, then it's OK. Right. Now, we're going to fit. Good part of that might still be valid, because you have charging at you right now is somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 people that work on this estate. You believe that-- what do you say, we, you, that's not me. I'm over on the other side of the estate in a bond area. I'm going to keep that. Looking like I'm the owner. But it's in your hand right there. Can I read that about that? Go ahead. Is this a-- By focusing on bringing in, we've let other greater evils run wild. There will be consequences. Should we drop everything to embark on this extraction? Something is rising a far greater evil than any of us have encountered. And I now fear that this evil is taking advantage of our negligence. Nostradamus. Isler. OK. The order that we roll for initiative, the first person that goes is, in fact, the white court vampires. All right. Oh, I believe it was only two at the cottage near you. They are now standing roughly. One of them skirts to the south, the other to the north, to try to-- there's only two of them, but they're trying to keep those that are in the tent area within view. And they have drawn guns to white court vampires that were at the cottage. How do we know they're trying to keep who in view? You. All you guys that are in the tent setup area. They're on the perimeter of the tent setup north and south. And they're watching you as a much larger contingency comes running up the pathway. But they're farther away. We're basically cut off from London and Ed, correct? Where are they? Yes. And in fact, Alan, you get to go first. Ed was with you. It was London and then we were in London. Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. So Maxwell and London are hopefully away from all the action. So that might give them an advantage to get away. The only thing I can see right now with everyone involved here is the situation is blown. We can't get many. I'm going to have to throw up a spell to cover our retreat. And we're going to head on out through the cliff and through the way that I didn't hope to have to use. But the one that we set with for a passion, I want like Zelda and you're not there. Who's with me? Zelda and-- Yeah. Zelda, Roberto, Edmund, Stephen, and yourself. Where's Rappa? Up on the hilltop today. Oh, the diaper. I'm hoping Rep is going to cover us with gunfire, but I'm thinking that I'm going to throw up a shield of force or wind power to try to deflect what is probably going to be bullets in a few seconds. Make sure that you guys are behind me and heading towards our evacuation. And this is going to be a fighting withdrawal. OK, so during your turn, what are you doing? Are they in a position behind me or are they all scattered around me? Zelda, Zelda is the closest to you. Roberto, Zelda and yourself are closest to the body. Stephen and Edmund are close, but not standing right next to you. I tell Roberto to help cover Zelda and get out of here from the way you came in. I'm going to cover our retreat. Ed help Steve move behind me too. Did you say forget, Manny? Well, how can we get to the cottage and play through the game again? Where's my desk? Go. Dude, you didn't care about him before. No, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Let's back up just a little bit. When the two white court vampires-- How do we know that they're white court vampires? Well, you may not, but they are close enough that they-- Plus, if you're watching them at all, they move so fast that they don't seem human. I would have a problem shooting. I think in the push to talk, froms, I thought that we-- Oh, he doesn't have a uni, so he doesn't have one, OK. When they set up North and South, and they have their guns drawn and aimed at you, what they're saying is everybody stand down, stay still. They don't seem to be shooting-- Oh, oh, oh, oh, they're pointing the guns at you and they're telling you everybody freeze. Don't move. I had a communication device last week. OK, good to know. So he might know just from us communicating. Is talking a free action? Or do I have to wait to my turn to speak to my team? Or my friends? No, I mean, let's say you can speak. Sure. It'd be really brief, because I don't think it's fair to talk. I would just say that you have two devices. One is the walkie-talkie for the grounds crew. One is to push the talk for your crew. Right. I wanted to push talk to my crew and say that the situation is going to change for the positive in about three seconds. I then pick up the one for the grounds crew, but I don't think it's fair to act until my turn for that. They can make up that what they will, like it gets a quick thing I would say into the talk. I tell everyone to get behind me. I want them between me and the cliff. So I'm the first person in line of these-- Well, there's one standing in between you and the river, to the north of you, and there's one standing to the southeast. So there's no way-- Am I misinterstanding? Anybody could be standing behind you, per se. Did one of you flaked all of us? They were moving at epic speed. And they were not making clear. Epic speed. And then went first. They rolled first. OK. They both beat you on initiative. Then it's not going to be a wall. It's going to be a dome. And gave Ryan to get close to me. I mean, there is only one between you and the river. Well, I'll let Roberta pick her that one. So your statement is, everyone get close to me? Yeah, everyone get close and wait to see what Leven can do. He's all done. I'm going to pull the nail out of the body. I'm not going to leave it there. I'm going to go get close to him. But then I'm going to take the nail and drive it into the ground under the idea and assumption that I could potentially activate that power again to at least make the area sanctified at least for the sake of Manny, if not us too, since we can't extract him anymore. And I would be playing off of this strength terracard that I had pulled previously, the idea of a compassionate approach, and creating a safe, trusting environment where you can gently influence others in your belief. OK. What I'd like you to do is make a discipline role for me. And this is to represent your ability to affect this nail as you're driving it into the ground and how powerful this effect is going to be. OK. My discipline is plus five. Not convection? For belief. Correct the belief. Good point. We're going to go with conviction. My conviction is plus four. I have two negatives, three, and a third negative. So now I'm down to one. This would be a good thing to do. Average. Yeah, but I have two. It's a fairly sizable moment, though, in the story. Just to let you know. So you're a decision, but-- I get really quick, though, since I'm new to this. If I get down to zero, I'm going to die, basically, if I don't have any more of these. Oh, no, you won't die. You just won't be able to affect the dice role anymore. And if there's a situation where I think one of your aspects could be compelled, you could be forced to do something based on your aspect, that would earn you another fake point. But there'd be no way to say, no, I don't want to do that. OK, so if I tap an aspect, then I get another-- Your option is to reroll, and you roll negative three. So that might be your best, because the other option is to add two, which-- Can so any of us spend a point for her? Spend a fake point? No, I mean, I don't know. This is where we're going to go. You have to name which aspect you're tapping, and how is relevant? Yeah, well, you can do anything. You set your mind, too. So you're doing a very relevant one. Very, very positive aspect. And then I throw this in? Yes, yes. Four in conviction. And then your fake dice is minus one, so you're three. Seven, three. Better be when it was. You have a good conviction as you drive this nail into the ground, and it does seem to have some effect. There would still seem to be some power emanating from Ryan Nelson a bit. That stops. But also, the ground is giving off-- it's not a pleasant feeling. It's almost like-- Like it's resisting it or reverberating off? Yeah, there's-- have you ever-- I have a moon roof. And occasionally, if I'll have that open, and the air goes across in such a way that it actually that's lobs in your ears, and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. What's going on? It's resonated. It's resonated. There's some residents that is just driving into your head, and it's making you ill. It is not a pleasant feeling at all. But it is having some effect. It's not quite coming to your contest, is it? Am I-- do I need to be holding onto this the entire time for it to be having an effect, or can I let go? Do you feel you need to be holding it? No, I don't. But I wasn't sure if you were saying-- I'm not saying it. I'm asking, I guess, is that only me that it's going on in my ears, or is this everyone? No, you see everybody kind of wincing properly. Yeah, I mean, you think for a second, exactly that, is this me, but you see everyone else going like holding their ears and wincing their face, kind of screwed up a bit? Stephen. What are the guards over at the check that has many? And where are they doing? They've already surrounded us. They're no longer at the shack there. There's one to the north, near the river, and one to the south. They're holding guns at you, and one to the north is saying, everybody, just threes. Stop. How far are they? He's still there. Yeah. I don't think he was doing that. And the people who are swarming through our location, where mostly are they coming from? They're down the path? Down that path. So-- How far are they away? There seems like a few of them have broken out of the pack and are in the lead. There's a good chance that those guys are going to be here next turn. Are they moving the guys behind them? A couple turns. Are they moving faster than normal humans? Oh, yeah. How many of them? Seven or eight. In addition to the two. Yes. OK. Is there a delay action? Yeah. Always. You can fall down to their initiative, which would be a reverse fall. You fall through the hole list. This grenade, that rapid fashion, how is it triggered? Do you get delighted for sure? It's a gas thing that you pull the top off. It's doubly convenient. I'm perfect. Yeah. I see you with that or an impact when you throw it in. Aerosol just means something. So you pull the cannon when it hits an object, it works. OK. Just to refresh the chemistry. The canisters, though, the grenades, those were unhappiness. Yes. Gailings? They were disperment to draw-- Distract and draw. --to draw and distract uncontrollably the vampire. Yeah, to use it on the normal people. And just to remind you, we all have our catering uniforms that had some kind of-- I put a charm on it, so we at least have plus one to resist the despair. OK. I'm going to delay my action for now. OK. And we will go to wrap up. I'm going to wait for-- OK. --ward aim. Are you guys both relying as in you wish to act on this round? Well, if I'm waiting for the ward and you're aiming, isn't useful, because I'm not taking my turn, right? Aiming would be taking your turn. I'm giving yourself a plus two to the next round. So you're waiting to see whether you should be able to-- We can influence on which one to target, right? Sure. Well, you can tell. Do you want me to drop the northern vampire? I would say, or target the one between us and the river. No. [LAUGHTER] Well, no. He's acting, do you want me to drop him, as in, should I shoot him now? You're saying just to aim at him. Yeah, hold him, target him, and wait for the signal. There's a big difference between those two states. Charge right for the signal. Clear on this. And the signal is all hill breaking loose. It's on? Yeah, go ahead and aim. So is Ruppa spending the turn aiming? If not, it is advanced turn. I'm going to wait until I see what the ward does. If that fails, I might go ahead and shoot. You can aim without shooting and get a plus two when you eventually shoot. I don't know. Yes, but that would be taking-- OK. It's turn. That's true. And if he's delaying, then-- Advent. You were saying my gloves that I had were still in the truck. Yes. Yeah. Can I say, no, I bought back there to the truck while these guys were setting up and doing things. And to get another bag of tools and things I needed to turn up, and I brought them back with me. Yes, you can certainly do that. And spend a point for that. Yes. I'm going to do that. Do you have a last point? Yes. But now you've got your gauntlet fully. Well, they're in the bag. And what I'm-- It's sponsoring. I'm putting my hands up to the guy saying, I have medical training. I'm going to check this guy out, and I'm going into the bag. I'm going to grab my gauntlets and try to put my back to one guy and somebody else between the other guy. And I'm going to Ryan's body, and I'm looking for the coin. I'm going to pick it up at the gauntlets. Seems to me you're doing three things here. One of them is getting the gauntlet on. And the other one is trying to confuse them on what you're really doing, like some deception. And the third one is to search for the coin. Yes. So get the gauntlet on that. That could be a free action, and I'm proud with that. But doing so stealthily is what I'd like to see. So give me a stealth roll of some sort. That would be versus their alert. Not this. If this matters, I mean, I am, or is there a alert? Holding a sword, and I did just throw off someone's head. So maybe their attention is kind of focused on me. Like, yeah, you can-- I would say he definitely could cap that aspect if he needs to. Ryan Nelson had a few consequences on him. We didn't get to use, because he died like a pansy. Correct. Can we use those? He's like, kind of like a bitch. Go ahead. Can we use those for pluses on other activities? I can actually see that in this case, because he's just never had fucking mess. Let me go help him. He could sort of use it as a distraction. Could I use my cloak of shadows, which is supposed to work in the shadow of darkness, since I got a cloak wearing-- You're wearing your cloak of shadows? No, there's no-- You're in sunlight. Does that give us your powers? Power. OK. Sure. You get a plus two, which would erase two nays and just make it a minus one, which would give me a fair. No. Yeah, that is a hard fought fair, my friend. I think you did good. Oh, OK. You've got a good stealth going on. There's only one white court vampire that has a better view. Well, wrote for him his fair, and his role was minus one. What the hell kind of bodyguard is? He's better at fighting than everybody. Noticing. So you have successfully gotten the gauntlet and put it on your hand. Now, as for searching for the coin, I'm going to ask for an investigation, and this is going to be-- Gotcha. --versus. You thought you would need investigation anymore, didn't you? Who ordered it? I don't. That's my job, though. I can't realize I had an investigation. I tell Maxwell to find the coin, but don't touch it. Boss, I'm about 200 feet away. I'm currently choking out Butler. But I'm going to lose. OK, I wrote the dispute for Ryan Nelson, and I'm hiding the coin, and you have to beat that. I got a plus two, and my investigation is good, so that's a superb. So you do manage to locate the coin. I'm not even going to try to tell you where he kept the coin. We'll just assume that you found it, and got it. And-- Point slots. --you have picked it up with the gauntlet. It is in-- Just the coin that was wrapped? This would be Ryan Nelson's coin for the demon that he was demon abusing him. And we go, too. Maxwell. I'm chucking out of Butler. I don't even know if we need to keep choking out fully. Hang on. OK. I'll do it, but-- It's one stress per se. Could you punch him while I grapple? No. Cheers? No, I did so does not punch him. He gets his humongous mind as to his defense right now. Can't you just smack his head around? That's fantastic. I have the rest of the group to save, so I think you can handle it. Grapples and drugs and foul work that you only do one damage a turn. But I am going to say, in order to expediate this, you can spend fate points, tap aspects to increase the damage. One of the aspects, you're law enforcement. You've been trained on how to take somebody down quickly or out quickly. So throw an aspect or a fate point for that. Roll against his mite for the grapple check, and then I'll spend it as I need to for damage. [MUSIC PLAYING] Zero. Three. So I successfully grappled. It shows one damage, and then a couple of homelands. It's pretty operative for two extra damage. And I think you have to say, I'm a homelands security agent. Yes. When you respect that. And I'm choking him out, so I'm not killing him every life so I'd say. Petrie there. Wait, wait, wait. What? Truthfully, he's got two stress points. So I don't need-- He's not a warrior of any type. You've done three damage. That means you've at least got to the lowest of the consequences. Is he going to-- He's a thick, cake decorator for crying out a lot. If he's against the wrongs, that's enough to take him out. Right. So I start. Yes. I don't want to have you spend 27, 8 points to take out a fucking butler. Neither do I, but I still have more than most people. Seriously. He's a choking house. He's the first glass butler. He is definitely no Alfred. All right. You drag him away from the water so he doesn't drown. And leave him hidden behind the bush. And you go to Roberto and then London. I give London his walkie-talkie if we didn't already get that. I think I have that already for some reason. OK. But if not, thank you very much. Roberto. Yeah. Where's my father? He would probably be talking to London Rachel, Steven, or-- I don't want to talk to me. I'm sorry. I don't have a phone to talk to people. I'm talking to everyone who's with me right here. Steven, Ellen, Zelda-- Zelda, my question to them was, where's my dad? He's in the cottage. We finish it. But hold back until we see what's going to happen here. I'm Neil Donne. Pick up the coin. Tore source coin. I got you forgot about it. The double demon. Oh, OK, great. OK. London. I spent a fake point last week saying that I had met him the leader of this clan of white court vampires. OK, so you're talking about Leo? Yes. Now I don't know if he prefers-- Leo Salvatore. Yes. Leonardo Salvatore, as you say. If I met him, I know a fair deal of war. I'm not fantastic at it. I've actually been reducing it. My question is, what do white court vampires call each other? What would be the terminology that white court vampires would normally use amongst themselves? I'd like brethren, brothers. Or anybody else got something that might be good. And it's fair to assume that London would know that working with supernatural powers, or do you want me to make a role in some sort for one? I don't know, necessarily, that you would not. So I want a lower role, but we're going to make it something that's relatively easy. It is fair. I rolled a plus one on the fake dice, and my lore is fair, so it goes up to good. So yes, you know, but typically white court vampires tend to call each other brethren, because they are all, in fact, related in a particular clan. Then, London, using his presence and his charisma and the voice as best he can performant of-- Leo says, I'll brethren report to the parlor. The tent is a distraction. Yeah, it's a distraction. I'm being attacked in the parlor. Everyone here now, my life depends on it, so yours does as well. So just trying to forcefully pull everyone to the main house. So what would you like? A performance role, because that's certainly what you're doing. Well, it's also an order. Yeah. I think it should absolutely be presence in that sense, or deceit, or-- Well, this is certainly my conviction. Typically, bullying people around requires intimidation. Or this isn't bullying, though. This is, I am the father of a family. Get here now. I'm dying. It's not attending. I'd say to see your presence. All right, we know that London wants to use presence. How do we feel about London using presence? Presence is charisma to command reputation. If he's trying to communicate, he's used to direct troops, workers, or other positions. Well, that's pretty straightforward. What's that? I need to read it anymore. What's that? Presence is good. But he's pretending to be someone else's presence to direct troops, workers, or any other group attempting attempts. So should it be negatively modified by-- Modified by deceit or performance? I can use presence, but it's negatively, because it seems to be on point. But I have to-- It's not just presence. I think to say it's modified by deceit would be correct. So if you're deceit's higher, it's not a negative, but a plus. If it's lower than it is a minus one. I think that's fair. Well, in this case, wouldn't it actually be better to have two roles, one, to do a deceit role, to see how well your deceit is being executed. And then that result will affect the-- Because it's a good point, Mike. I don't want to drag it out. And I think to make it quicker, just to say it's minus one, because enough bravado-- I mean-- It's going over a lucky talkie, doesn't it? Just sometimes pretending you know what you should be doing is enough. Right. So confidence in a clipboard, and you get it anywhere. Exactly. One role, a plus one, and a fate dice. His presence is fan fucking tastic, plus six. Minus one, because he has a deceit or performance lower than his presence. So he goes down to five, and then back up to six with his role. I then spend a fate point in saying that information is power. I knew this guy, I knew his voice, I knew everything about him, so I think I could pull him off very well. That would take it from a six to a legendary, an eight, and fuck you. But I'm London. This is the best performance on my life. So it goes from a plus eight to a plus 10. So anyone who's been thinking about doubting what I'm saying over this walking talkie needs to get their asses to the parlor this second. OK. And then I click through to the group and say, should be leaving in three, two, one. I'm torn. First of all, yeah, that was an outstanding deal. What happens is the white cord vampires coming down the path stop suddenly in their tracks, and start to look back at the house, and then move in that general direction. The two that are near where you guys are, look at each other, look at you, look at each other. And they start running towards the house as well. And then over their walkie talkies, you hear the same voice, again, saying, no, that was not me. That was a lie. That was a deceit. Stop where you are right now. Who are you? What are you doing? I'm like open mic. I'm ready for some social comedy. There is absolute turmoil in between what they're supposed to be doing. So you guys have at least one turn in which to make some sort of action, starting with Alan. The guys that were near here, near the tents, are at least now this far down the path. These guys were halfway up the path, and are now almost back to the door of the house. And but they're not the cottage, right? They are not. The two that were at the cottage are now halfway to the house. The main house, they're going almost directly south. And this is where Mandy is here? And the cottage is almost directly east. Right, east the cottage, yes. And where in this area? Yes. So before the warden is to take his action, we had two people delaying their turns. That is true. And you guys can either maintain your position, or you can act at any point during this turn. As soon as I see those guards take their eyes off of us, and start to move. Yeah. I'm just going to sprint over to the house. The cottage, not the house. All right, we're going to put you in the six slots. Steven. Small house. And wrap up. Are you serious? Surreptitiously? Or no? Flat out, just sprint in there. OK, rub up. What was that? The cottage is directly east of where they were. And you see Steven running, basically towards you. You're much higher in a tree to the east. But he's running almost directly towards you. But you know where the cottage is in between you and the house. Or between you and the tent area where they are. Steve, I want you to roll a fate roll plus your athletics to see how far you get. We're going to say that it is roughly three zones to the cottage. Three zones? Yeah, so you need an athletic roll of good or higher to get there in one turn. All right, so I have an athletics of three. No problem. Wow. Yeah, it's the greatest. Minus one. Four, and you're minus one. So that would actually take you exactly to the door. Perfect. That's how I find it. The door being the closest door, the single door that the one guard was standing in. So they both made their way towards the main house then? Yes. Can I position myself on the east side? So I'm kind of hidden from them? On the house or directly south? So in the door-- On the other side. The door is on the cottage. It's on the west side of the cottage. And to hide yourself from the house, you'd have to go to the north side of the cottage.
