Porsche inspection, soldering a gas tank, our favorite fuel additives.

After Ray talks about an inspection he did on a questionable Porsche 911 the talk
turns to soldering a gas tank crack. A concerned caller warns of all the badness that can happen by doing this job , and the boys don't disagree. Chris is still having fuel injector
issues with his CX9 which leads to a rousing discussion about fuel additives. A new
arrival at the shop is teased, and you'll see it at the end of this video... or check our

All that much more, this Sunday at High Noon on the Motormouth Radio Hour, call in and speak live with the wizards of speed and live feed, Chris Witzer and Ray Carino bring the whole family, kids under 12 get in free, every Sunday at noon on WHPC. Take the Long Island Expressway to the Meadowbrook Parkway and look for the sign saying "No parking on the expressway and no express service on the parkway! Go ride on Highway 24 to Garden City! Two dollar all day parking includes Pit Pass!" Monday! Ladies and gentlemen, the beat goes on! 3.31 of Los Angeles, this is the Rio D'Aubstein! [Music] Yeah, you might not be bicostle, maybe you are, you might think you're in LA, you might think you're in the Isle of Palms, but you're on Long Island listening to the Motormouth Radio, Long Island's only automotive talk show with your hosts, Ray Guarino and Chris Witzer. How are you today? I'm doing fantastic, Raimondo, having a great time right here on a Sunday afternoon, listening to KJ Los Angeles, some of the best radio in LA and I would hope it would have migrated here, unfortunately it did not. It kind of makes you want to say "Wow, we." Yeah. Guarantee to make you say "Wow, we." Right, and you can get in on this if you want, you can talk to us, call us 516-572-7440, text us. Yes, well, you can text us, we're basically, we're in an experiment here, we're being experimental and we're trying to host our... our signal on Facebook on Instagram, why? Right. So it's, I'm actually looking at the feed now and it's sideways. So we're not texting today, but we are going to try doing this live and we're failing miserably. But, yeah, we're just going to take phone calls at 516-527-4440 or try and figure out how to get this, how to get this shebang running correctly. Yeah, when you figure out, tell me how you can see it on Instagram, because I'm not. I'm actually seeing it now, but I think it's frozen. Yeah, I'm not. Oh, it's telling me an unrecognized Samsung device just logged into your account. Oh no! That means it's you. So it's not asking me to do anything about it. Right. Uh, account center. Let's see where I'm logged in. OK. We detected unrecognized logins, reviewed devices. Live radio. Oh, that's why it's frozen hour. All right. So I'm going to say, OK, this, I'll say it was me. There we go. I'll say it was you. Yeah, because they're all from the state that I don't live in. So I will say that they're all me. Yes. Oh, yes. Now, good. Now we got to signal that. You know, all we got to do is test this stuff once in a while. And I guess, you know, that's that maybe that's the thing. We need to test it once in a while. Yes, we do. We need to test these things once in a while. Instead of having it, instead of having broadcast, Brian says he's watching it and we're sideways. Brian listen, we've been sideways upside down. I've been in crazy positions. We're probably absolutely correct. It's fine. Don't worry. So anyway, people can text us how. You can, well, you can text us, but I'm probably not going to answer it. Right. Right. All right. Then call us at 516-572-7440 and follow us. My phone is being used. That's why. There you go. All right. So now we need another person to come in and do. We need staff. Follow us on social media, motor, mouth radio on Facebook and Instagram is real underscore motor, mouth radio. And this show is also being broadcast on YouTube. It will be replayed on our channel, which is real underscore motor, mouth videos. And you can find us there. And it's also on the podcast tab I found out, which is nice. So. All right. There we go. Now we're upside down. Okay. Again, I felt the blood rushing in my head. I didn't know why. So last week, listen, we had a great show. Last week, we had a lot of share on, which Ms. Mrs. She's actually Mrs. But we, you know, she's her maiden name. And you know, it didn't really hit me till after the show because we've been friends with Alana for a long time that she's got a really big position. Now, you know, she is the senior editor for features at car and driver magazine. That's pretty slick and exotic years ago, if we landed an interview with the senior editor for features, the car driver magazine, we'd be saying, wow, look at us. And now it's like, Hey, a lot of what's going on. You know, how's the dogs? It's a lot. You know, well, that's, you know, it's funny because I always feel there's a certain technique that we have to doing interviews. Whereupon, we like to basically, it's almost like a chat in the parking lot. I mean, I like to think that everybody knows that a lot of shares in the staff. And a lot of shares in established individual and car in the journalistic field. So it's like sometimes they want to know some of the little things, some of the things that make people who they are. So that's one of the things that I always appreciated about chatting with her is that we get to talk about stuff that she normally doesn't talk about to other interviews. And I like that. I think we do that with a lot of our, a lot of the guests that we have on this program. We try. Yeah. Yeah. And we also trying to get a camera. So yeah, speaking of us, you know, speaking of Brian a minute ago, I got to tell you, I did another car inspection this week. What did you do? What did you do? Right. I go from a 1927 Rio Flying Cloud to a 2009 Porsche Carrera 4. A 911 car. Wow. Yeah. So now I'm calling Brian. Hey, Brian, what can you tell me about it? Inspect it. So, yeah, what a great car, man. Phenomenal. Now, here's some driver. Yeah, here's something. Let me tell you something that was really kind of fake easy that gets a lot of people want to know about this. And I kind of debunked it a little bit with my own car, only because it was my own car. The owner, this car had come from California, went to Utah, went to Colorado, went back to California. He bought it out of California a few years ago. Okay. The car, the car facts said the car was totaled. And now this was a $100,000 car. So it had to be about 80 grand worth of damage. So picture word, what would have been left? You know, the wheels, maybe? So, yeah, it had, it was totaled. But then, like two months later, a month and a half, two months later, there's record service records of the car being in the dealership out there for a normal service. Wow. So like, wait a minute, was it toe end on the car facts? It said it was totaled, yet no point of impact noted. And you know, I can give you probably a good theory on why. I think it's because the car was brought in for service. The service amount, whatever the charge was, was probably almost to the cost of the car. Because if you told me it was a 2009 car's worth what? It's got to be worth 20 grand, 30 grand. Oh, more now. I didn't look it up. No, but this was 11 years ago. Right. Oh, it was total 11 years ago, total 11 years ago. Yeah. Now you can total the car without having a point of impact, if it was say flooded. Yeah, but now no evidence on this car, what they were looking for, for paint issues that were nothing. So it was kind of interesting, just as an overview, the things that you get asked to verify, the buyer was very concerned about, you know, the body condition and rust and, and also, and there was like, this car couldn't have been more pristine. It was ridiculous. How nice of us. Yeah. So I think I'm thinking service. I'm thinking it blew the transmission or something like that. And it's still cost 30 grand to replace me while the cars were 30 grand. And that's the end of that. No. So this was. So that. So those are kind of the funny things that go on with stuff like that. I got something else I'm going to try to do in the shop. That's kind of interesting. You know, I tell you we had the 442 and I did drop the gas tank last week. On the Ozil build. It has been sitting for how long? 25 or so years. Now the guests didn't smell bad. And even, you know, no, did not. And even, you know, Ronnie came in the shop and said, Hey, you know, you take him to gas out of the thing. I don't, I figured I'd smell it. I'm like, I know, I really don't. It didn't smell bad. He goes, whoa, whoa, what are you going to do with it? He was, he was watching, put it in your car. I'm like, what? I did. I put it in the FJ. You put old gasoline in your FJ. And I drove to do the inspection on the Porsche the next day. Yeah. Absolutely. And you know what? Not, not a hitch. Not a glitch. Not a, not a nothing. And you tell me that I like to roll the dice. If you look, look at Instagram, you'll see I posted pictures of this. The inside, well, the top of the tank is silver. Like it just was produced. The bottom floor of the trunk is beautiful, not even a drop of rust. Like it was right. I put my light inside the tank and took a picture clean as a whistle. It's going back in. It does the descending unit. So of course, you know, we had to order that and it's back ordered. And now the thing I noticed when I was trying to wrangle a tank out where the filler neck goes into the body of the tank. As I moved it, I just picked up, just perceived a slight little change in light. There's a slight crack right there. But the filler neck is, it gets, it gets soldered to the tank. Oh, on. Okay. At that joint, at that juncture right there. Right. So what I did is with the tank out, I took a wire brush and cleaned the area nice and good. And then I can see right below it, there's a solder blob. So somebody had fixed that previously. So we're going to take it out, you know, to maybe Billy to have him do it. But you know, it's good. It's going to take a while. I don't think I may do this myself. I'm making some, I have some silver solder. I may just attempt to prepare myself. You probably could. I mean, I hate to say it, but you're probably going to have to, you know, obviously remove the, remove the tank from the car. It is. It's out. Look at the Instagram page. Look at the Instagram page. You'll see that it's all, you know, it's out. It's done. Actually, our live video ended for some reason. They don't like us very much. Okay. So, so much for that idea. Let's go back to the texting. Yeah, good idea. Switch on the fly here. Right. Let's go back to texting. Let me get my, my text sheet. You can text this at 203-670-4127. Here at the Nutmeg offices, 203-670-4127. Our, our Instagram live was a massive failure. We'll figure that out later, though, when more testing can, can actually happen. But if you take the tank out and literally, you know, just run some, run a garden hose into it, get all that gas out of there and let it, let it air dry and then solder it. I think that that would probably. Well, I did take the tank out. If you see the pictures, I did take, did take the gas out. So, it's probably air dried by now. It's, it's been, you know, better part of the week. So, yeah, I'm going to see maybe just a little silver solder. We'll fix that and then we'll be good as gold. The sending unit was like, I said, backwarded, of course. So, there you go with that. Yeah, I'm thinking silver solder in a flame. That's why I wouldn't use an iron. I was actually thinking of, if I could do it with the inductor. I wonder if I could wrap a coil or anything and get it hot enough because you're going to make things cherry red with the inductor. You certainly can. So, flameless heat. I wonder if I could heat it with the inductor and melt the solder. But you're going to ruin the head of the inductor. That one coil. Yeah, I'd have to ruin it. It'll be like, you know, custom bedding around a tree coil. Yeah. Right, because the coil has got like, it's almost like a fur. It's almost like a mouse fur that's around it. That's more like an asbestos kind of stuff for heat, I think. Well, it is. If you put it to your tongue, yeah, it's how it feels. But, no, don't do that. You have an inductor, please. So, if you don't want anyone. You know, if I spoke to, we spoke to a lot last week and I was telling her about that polish that I got from Time to Shine, from Evan Stegar. I sent her the info and then I sent Evan an email and I asked him if you'd like to come back on and talk about, you know, the polishes and all these things he loved to. So, I threw it in his court. I said, give me some dates. Well, it looks good for you and we'll program you. So, if you want to learn how to pop, you know, case in point, his stuff is phenomenal. I think I told you a story last week. Let me think. That was a Sunday. No, it was the next day. On Monday night, we went to the TGI Friday's up here on a cruise night. And it was Killawak Kevin. He was in a 68 GTO. I was in the rocking chair and then Mike with his shoebell. Super sport. She fell was behind me. So, it's a nice group. Yeah, it was. We had a state trooper actually check this out and give it a thumbs up. So, I noticed that, I noticed that the phone is ringing. So, let me do this and let me, let me say, "Hi, caller. You're on." Callawak. You're on with the motormals. Yes. I wanted to ask you was, Ray said last week he said he was changing the oil on his car and he filled up the filter before he put it back on. Is that still recommended? Absolutely. Who are you speaking to? There's a dentist from each rock away. Oh, Dennis. Okay. Yes. Okay. Well, I'm Ray. That's Chris. Yes. It is absolutely. And that was something that we debunked. Chris was of the other camp thinking not to do it. Right. If you follow the guests we had on Lake Speed Jr. the oil tribologist, you can go to his channel, which is the oil. Is it the oil geek? The oil geek. The oil geek. Yes. He did a very comprehensive video on why. Well, the question was, "Should I or shouldn't I pre-fill the oil filter?" And he did it with doing oil testing and he had the car in the dyno. He did dyno testing. He found out that, yes, absolutely fill that filter first. If you... No kidding. Yeah. Now, if you have a cartridge filter on top of the engine, you obviously can't. Yeah. Yes. Right. Right. Now, they're all underneath. Yep. Right. Mm-hmm. Yeah. No, I noticed you guys all the time. I was in Alaska a couple of weeks ago. I missed that show. Oh, how cool. Oh, wow. You were definitely in better position than we were. Did you do a cruise? Yes. It was a cruise in the middle. We got the Vancouver a couple of days early and then stayed in Fairbanks a couple of days after. Oh, I've heard that's fantastic. Yeah. Dennis, any hot cars up there? How's the automotive scene in Alaska? He glues on wheels. There is. There is. They're around. The only thing that got me was in the parking lot. They got these stanchions where you can plug in a cord. Sure. So, this way you can plug in your engine block overnight or else it will freeze up. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. In some of the colder cities, I was in Minneapolis for a bit and you would see the plugs hanging out between the grill of some cars. So, they can plug in and it was an oil crankcase heater and that's what it was supposed to do. It was supposed to keep the oil from freezing. Every car had one of those plugs hanging out the grill. You know, it's kind of funny. My Fiat is kind of a warm-blooded car. It loves the warmer weather. It doesn't like so much the cold weather. And I actually found it eBay years ago an engine block heater for that car and bought it. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I haven't used it. I haven't used it. So Dennis, do you ever go down to the East Rockway cruise night on Mondays? Yes. I try and get down. I got an 81 El Camino and a 94 Corvette. Okay. Okay. Yeah. We haven't been down there yet this year because last year was really starting to drop off, you know, with maybe like eight cars, six, eight cars. So, we started going and doing a couple other ones. But, yeah, we may make it down here before the summer's out. All right. Just mention it on the shelf, boys. Yeah. Yeah. Very good. But, yeah. Fill out oil, filter with oil. And, you know, lubricate the gasket and you'll be happy. Things will be cool. All right. It must have been a little messy. That's why I stopped doing it. Yeah. Well, you know, what I do is once you fill it, you know, if it comes up onto the top rim of the filter, what I do is I'll take my finger and kind of grab it and kind of send it back down the center hole. You can use a funnel, too. And once you fill it, if you wait, you wait and look at it, you'll see that oil level drop because the pleading will actually suck the oil in. It'll absorb it. So, you may have to pull the oil in like two or three times to get it totally full. No kidding. Yeah. I got to give that a try. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, because I got a nice call. That's very good. Thanks. Talk to me, guys. Have a good afternoon. All right, Dennis. Thanks. Be safe. All right. Bye-bye. All right. We have we do have another caller on the line. We'll say, "Hi. Quality, you're on with the motor mouths." How you doing? Ready? How you doing, Steve? Yes. What's happening? What's up, Steve? Good. How are we doing? Good. Good. Yeah. I was just living the tree about. Yeah. I just listened to you about that gas tank. Okay. Right. My advice to you is change that tank. Okay. And here's the reason why. Okay. Here's the reason why. All right. A lot of people listen to you. A lot of people listen to the show. Okay. And you may be successful on soldering that tank without it exploding. Okay. But you might give somebody an idea to do it themselves and they're going to get hurt. Okay. They're going to get hurt. Okay. So a number. I just went through the same situation with a fellow in my car club. He has a 67 Dodge Dart. He needs a gas tank. It's leaking this and that. And all the things about having it lined in this. I said, "Just buy a new tank." Okay. And online, you get a tank. You get a sending unit. You get the hardware and the whole kit for like under 200 hours. Okay. So, you know, just change that tank. All right. Yeah. I don't know if you ever are in the burn unit of NASA County Medical Center. Okay. But I was. Okay. Not me personally, but a friend of mine was in that same situation. Decided to solder his own gas tank. And let me tell you something. That's the last place on Earth. You ever want to go into? Okay. Go into as a visit. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I was haunted for months. Okay. So. You know that came to that tank for the benefit of yourself. Okay. For the benefit of your listeners, you know, change that tank. Let me tell you that does set up a very odd dichotomy because this show we've always been all about. Do it yourself and do it. Yeah. And also, but do it yourself safely and smartly. Yeah. And if you're over your head, then send it out. Right. This particular tank, I did price it. It's going to it would cost over $500. Okay. Okay. For the tank and the sender. And the other thing is, Steve, I've had some trouble actually with one of Mike's cars with an aftermarket tank. It didn't fit like the OEM tank did. Yeah. So there's there's all sorts of you got to cut. But you know what? I have a very good option where I am where I'm doing this work at the shop. I can send it to the other shop and tell how those guys do it. And you know who the other guys are? That's you. Yeah. Wow. You would get you would get the same answer for me as you're getting now. Steve, I understand your point and you Steve, you make a very good point and I'm with you there. You did uncover something that yeah, because I always say, take the tank out, hose it down, put get water in there. Get all that fumes and all that gas out of the tank, let it air dry. But you do have a good point. There's still fumes and there's still a certain amount of danger and a certain amount of concern that goes along that. What would you say to using an adhesive like a marine text or an effect? It usually doesn't work. I mean, if you this is how I would do it if I really had to do it. Tell us. And and I would fill that tank up completely with water. Okay. Up until you write up to the hole. Okay. And that's going to force any fumes to the top. Okay. To the top. Okay. So, if you have to turn it upside down, but what you're going to do is you're going to solder that tank with water in it. Okay. The water is going to displace any fumes that may be in there. Okay. If you get me, you know, and that's how you do it. And basically back in the day, the radiator shops used to hook it up to an exhaust pipe. Okay. They would run an exhaust tube from their car or their truck into the tank and just keep exhaust fumes burning in there, burning in there all day long. And that would kind of burn out any any gas fumes that may still be left. But you're taking a risk. You're taking a risk and you may get away with it. But maybe one of your listeners, you know, wouldn't. Okay. And that's what that's why I'm calling it. Okay. I trust your decisions. And you know, in your experiences and you probably get away with it. Okay. But let me tell you something. Maybe somebody less experienced listening to you. Okay. Say, Hey, Ray, Ray, you know, saw this tank. I'm going to start a mine. And that's the person that's going to get injured. You know, that's what I'm afraid of. Okay. So I'll just pass it on. You know, you guys are the professional, you know, and that's that's my two cents. You know, and that's and that's the word from the legal counsel of web web and web web. Steve, you're officially like that. And the only reason why is because of that, I had a good friend and he decided to solder his own gas tank and he ended up in Nassau County burn unit. Okay. And like I said, that is totally etched in my mind forever. Okay. Oh, yeah. So soon as soon as I heard that conversation that triggered me, I said, I got a call. I got a call. I got to save these guys. I got to save them from themselves, you know, so sometimes that 500 bucks as well. Yeah. All right. Thanks, Steve. Talk to you soon. Right. Okay. Thank you. Thank you so much. It's a pleasure to talk to someone that sees it from a different view. We appreciate it here. Well, I was going to get to the whole safety show and at the stage, I was going to get to the whole safety part of it and how, you know, with anything, you shouldn't be doing this stuff unless you're either are qualified or feel comfortable enough to. I mean, that goes for any, you know, all your house projects. I mean, you hurt doing anything. So, but you do have to be careful. And like I said, we always say, if you're over your head, you call somebody who will send it out to a professional. Oh, yeah. And I know individuals that have had the horror stories with gas tanks like that. Yes. And he's absolutely right. Steve's absolutely right. I come from the school of with where these parts are concerned. I like to use as many of the original parts as I can in a car. Great. Just because of fitment issues and things like that. So, I had an issue with the gas tank on the Chrysler because the tank, the car had run for 30 years. So what was in the tank was like this jelly. It was a disgusting mix of it looked like burnt oatmeal. That's what it looked like throughout the whole tank. So I knew that was getting yanked. And I installed an aftermarket tank in there. And there was a couple of places where I had to take a ball peen before I filled it with gas. But I took a ball peen and got bunk and knocked the tank so I can fit it incorrectly because there was like this little bit of an overhang or something was not right. It wasn't impossible, but it did give me pause as to go, is this the right tank? Is this the right size? Do you remember one of that tank cost you for that car? That's a big one. That was that was somewhere between three and 400 bucks. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Correctly. Yeah. Yeah. And it was big. It's a big tank. I know I'm like on Mike's car. I put the aftermarket tank in and literally now I'm going to use a transmission jack. I almost had to push it through the trunk floor to be able to get the straps on. Something was off. Something was off in that hole. And this was the tank that came out. No, a new tank or a placement. That's why instead of had trouble with the replacement tanks before where they don't always fit. Now, it might have been the car itself. It could have been the time. I don't know. I ended up was able to shove it up far enough that I got the straps on and, you know, and it hasn't fallen out. I used to call it last week. So that's what I want to tell you. We started this with Mike following me in his car. And this was pretty cool. I noticed I posted this too. You'll see it on social media. I took a picture of, you know, I had Kevin in front of me and I had, you know, Mike behind me. So I take a picture through the rear view mirror, which was kind of interesting. Yes, I'm looking at it now. And you can see Mike was kind of hanging back. So Michael, you know what? I know he's pretty much of a tailgater. He drives close. So why is he hanging so far back? Was my car poured out noxious fumes? Was I speltin flame out? No. And he told me when we got to the cruise night. The rear panel on my car that between the taillights, the filler panel, he said it was reflecting the sun so bright. He couldn't see and he had to hang back. And I said, well, I use that time to shine polish from Evan Stegar. I said, you gotta use this stuff. This is stuff you sometimes use. I found that is the best and I told Evan that when I emailed him. I said, this just happened. Evan, you know, that day. I said, babe, you know, I thought people were hanging back at a courtesy. You know, there'd be a nice. I knew Mike. No, you were blinding. I was blind. So that's how good his polishes are. And I use them exclusively now on all my stuff. I bought a bunch of them. So hopefully we'll have that on very soon. So you know what? We are with the bottom of the hour. Let's take our break. We'll do our due diligence. And unlike last week, when I got a phone call about the disparity in the weather report. We have a buddy, John, you're saying, yeah, you just said the weather was nice outside the window. He goes out here. It's pouring like crazy. I'm like, well, you are about, you know, 50 miles away from us. You know, it's kind of funny because this is the time of year where you get rainstorms. I mean, here at the house, here in the Let Make State, we can have a torrential downpour in the backyard and the front is still, you still see the sun shining. So, yeah, it's anybody's guess where it's going to rain. It's not going to rain. It did rain here, but it took till about four or five o'clock to happen today. Well, our WHPC weather is powered by Pentanas Gourmet with locations in Uniondale. Today, they said a few showers early, which I guess we did have. There was a little wetness out there. And it's going to be an overall kind of cloudy day, which it is high of 91, though. We got some humidity. So I got the units at home set to dehumidifying. They're working great tonight, partly to mostly cloudy, low 73. The next few days are supposed to be hot and humid. So. Right. And that's why you should listen to motorbout radio because we are a cool cup of slushy. Right. The automotive slushy. I don't know if I'll be slushing myself in the shop, soldering a guest. Thanks. That may be a little too much for me. So, let me tell you about Friday. Friday. F-R-Y-D-A-Y. Oh, please tell me why. Why are we talking about Friday? Well, this Friday, with an eye, July 12th, is National French Friday. Of course it is. And WHPC is celebrating with our friends at New York Fries at the Roselle Field Mall. How convenient. So, join us from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as we broadcast the Nassau mix. W-N-N-W-H-P-C Sports Talk live from the center court downstairs from the dining district. That's where Santa comes every year at Christmas time. Right. With fun prizes and lots of French Fries. If you can't be there, join in on fun. Join in on the fun on air at 90.3 FM. And on the WHPC app. That's just, you know, it's teeth. It's right. I actually have a throat soothing thing, lozenge in my mouth. I got a little bit of a tickle. Yes, which explained why you call it sports talk. Sports talk. Yeah. So, do we have a horror group of the horror? Yeah. Yes. As a matter of fact, we do have a motor mouth radio. I had a group in the hour while you would enjoy your lozenge. This week, if you take a ridiculous amount of pictures of your car, are you guilty of this? Every gear head out there cannot pass up the opportunity to take a sweet picture of their car in, let's say, the parking lot, you know, where the sun is hitting it just right, reflecting off the brilliant chrome in just the right way. Is your profile picture taken actually sitting in your car? Do you tell people some excuse like, oh, you look best leaving the house or behind the wheel of your car is good for natural lighting? You know, how about a shot of you actually driving the car, but usually involves other people. So, so if you have more pics of your car than your significant other or your kids, then you're part of the motor mouth radio on a group of the hour. Yeah. Yeah. And that's it. And you're guilty of it, too. It's either not my profile pic. I don't profile pictures like that, but it's just like the people have like their dog as their profile picture. Right. They don't say anything. Yeah. Oh, Bob, though, too. Yeah. A lot of people do that. Or they cat. Yeah. All right. That's true. We will be back with more motor mouth radio in a minute. I did everything I do. Right. Yeah. After a little break. And when we get back, I am going to discuss diagnoses my way on my wife's car. So when we come back, we'll be talking about that. Not the real gun steel back on motor mouth radio. Ray Guarino, Chris Switzer. Playing around with the dials and switches and things. Just having fun with you on a Sunday afternoon. Yes. Give us a call 516-572-7440 and get in on the fun. Or if not, tough luck. Get in on the failure. Yeah, get in on the failure too. What the heck? We play with it all. Yeah. That's for sure. The way things are going today. We're allegedly blowing people up. We're technologically failing miserably here. I'm trying to go on Instagram live. Yeah. Now I'm just holding a camera. Because I just want to see what is going horribly wrong. But anyway. So this week, I noticed the, I think I told you, I've been having an issue with the CX-9. Where it's not running. It's not running well. It's actually, it's missing. And it started missing a while ago. It was doing like this. You would drive it for like two hours. You would get to wherever you were going. Then you would get in the car to leave. And it would start to go like, do, do, do, do. As it was idle. Really? What is that? Yeah. What is that? Now I'm going back like that. Your IAC valve. Huh? IAC valve. Yeah. From a previous conversation. So to make a long story, very short, I changed the plugs and changed the coils. I still didn't get a check engine line. But I changed both of those things. And no check engine line until finally I got one. I got a P0302. So it was getting a misfire from the second cylinder. Okay. And swapped out the coils and the plugs again. And I got the same code. P0302. So now I'm thinking to myself, not the plugs. Not the coils. It's the injectors. Hmm. Could be. So here's what I did. What I've done. In the old days, I would have bought the most cheapest injector. And when you can remember two years ago, I did. Yes. And put those in the Explorer and had them all leaking like a sieve. I was getting all kinds of P030300 codes. And I had a swap mount for a set of Bosch's that are now working so well. It's great. The Bosch's are fantastic in the Explorer. So that's what I did. Went and ordered a set of Bosch's. Good. And now I'm going to put another set of plugs in it. Another set of coils and a set of Bosch's. And that's it. Well, why do you just start with those injectors? Why do you just start with those injectors and see if that solves your issue? Well, let's put it this way. There's already brand new coils sitting on the counter. And the plugs are already new. So I'm not really buying those again. But you know what you could do too? If you can, you'd have to get to a shop that has the right scanner. The right scanner, you can do cylinder kill tests. You can kill cylinders and see, you know, how the performance is. And you could actually look at injector pulse with. So you can, without having an injector or a test bench, you can see it's perfect. You can see the best representation of its performance through the scan tool. And you are right. Technologically, you can. And I think I had mentioned to you, I debunked that issue with a long thin screwdriver on the Explorer. Because I was able to take the long thin screwdriver and put it to the injector base as the engine was running and put my ear to it. And instead of it sounding like a healthy injector would sound like a tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, you would get like a real sharp tapping noise the injector would make through the screwdriver. And the faulty one made like a thud noise. Okay. And I'm like, that's the problem right there. So I had left because I was like, here's my technologically advanced scanning tool. Wow. A screwdriver. Yeah. I mean, you can, and you can hear the injectors, they kind of buzz. Right. I mean, those are still like analog versions of like what the scanner is doing. It's like taking your screwdriver to listen to a lifted noise or whatever. It can, it can clue you in. Certainly, you know, but well, you have the injectors. So yeah, you might as well, might as well. So, so that's basically what I'm going to do. And it's one of those things. It's just like what we always talk about. It's, it's that theory you hate is, is when one goes bad, change them all. When, when you know that that's, that's the part. You think, I think to myself, okay, how much am I spending on these injectors? 120 bucks, 130 bucks, if we're all six of them. And that's, that's actually, I think a very good price. There are more that are more expensive. Yeah. Yeah. And there are cheaper ones, which I tried at first. What are the ones I put in? They were called like pork, a pea torque or something like that. Oh, you have to mark it. A premium pea torque. They were, I've come to realize this. There's, I'd say 90% of parts that you order on Amazon, at least from what I've seen so far, 90% of them are not worth it. Right. It's just not, not worth it. I mean, I even put, I got burned with those TRQ coils that I ordered for the, for the, for the Mazda that initially I thought was the problem. And that didn't solve the problem. I should have realized it then. Yeah. But then I was having problems with those coils. At least I think I was having problems with those coils. So I swapped them out for a set of motocrafts. Right. With the old motocrafts. So now I'm putting in the new motocrafts, new injectors and the plugs are already new. So I'll try them for it. I've seen that most of that stuff through Amazon. It's all Chineseium from different companies. Chineseium. Yeah. And you don't know the, you don't know. And I've bought some stuff, not, not engine components. I bought some other parts and. Oh, yeah. There's something you can't. And see the car. That's, that's an X5, right? No, it's a CX9. Oh, a CX9. All right. It's got the Ford 3.7 V6 in it. What's very nice is that, that we, both our cars share the same block design. Okay. That's an interesting major. You know, there is another thing you could do that's, I mean, if you don't want to just go out and spend money in injectors, you could pull those injectors out and bring them to a place like South, you know, South Shore Fuel Injector, which is not near you. And have them, they put them on a bench. They test them in the state. You bring them, not the state of like, you know, of Connecticut, but in, in the condition that you bring them in and give you a report and they do the cleaning, put them through the cleaning cycle and show you how much better or if one of them is, is bad, you know, whatever. And it's a fraction of the cost of buying new injectors. The other thing. I did do that. I did that. Yeah. You had them clean? When you and I talked about it, because I did it with the Pathfinder many years ago, so why didn't you do it on this vehicle? Because it's easier just to swap them out. Okay. All right. Well, if that's your choice, say that's, you do what you want to do. Yeah. Because, you know, this was. The Pathfinder injectors for some reason, we're like $120 a piece. And so saying, and I agree with them on this a hundred percent. If you use an additive, a fuel additive, like a tech cron or Lucas, any, your cleaner of choice, even the, the, that stuff I just used in the cruise to clear the, the cat code, that was the Rizzloan. They say in a box, they recommend using it every three months because of due to the irregularities in gasoline. And I was never, I, I used to do it maybe once a year or once every six months. I think I'm going to start doing it a lot more often now. You know, it's kind of funny. I actually have in the car now, C-Phone, I went and, and, and purchased a bottle of C-Phone for the first time. And I had left because whenever I would do any research on this problem, on either the explorer or on now the Mazda, uh, I'd always, there was always some clown that would say, I'd put C-Phone in my Mustang and it's, uh, it's been fine ever since. There's always one of those guys, always one. Yeah. Yeah. And I'm like, you know what? I'm going to listen to that fool for, let's see what he, let's see if he's actually right. Now it turns into a laboratory. Let's see if he's right. And I did. And you know what? The car is runnable and drivable now. It's, it's literally, it's not running well. It's smooth. And still, if you stand behind the car, you hear through the exhaust. It goes like, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Yeah. Yeah. You're misfiring. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And, but, but my car's out now. It's, it's, it's on the road now. But, but when it gets back. Yeah. First thing I'm going to be doing is, is yank in the plenum off and, and, and going through the motions and getting that thing straightened out. Okay. So, but yeah, it's, I'm a, I'm not a, not a believer in it yet, but I did try it. I did give it a shot. And also we drive very conservatively with the car. We don't get on. And I think that also has something to do with it too. You do. You need the Brooklyn tune up. So I just did the Brooklyn tune up on the phone and said, hi, Collie, you're out the motor mouths and Chris is crummy up, crummy up injectors. Okay. Yeah. Crummy up. Hello, Chris. And Ray, it's John. Yeah, John. Hey, John. Hey, you know, the bottom line is there are just two damn many products out on the market, regardless of time to shine and no offense to them. Um, you know, T-form and all of the other products, you know, you find your niche and you work with it, but, uh, you know, there may be other ones, but yeah, who's got time to investigate? I got a clean fuel injectors. There's more fuel injector products on the market. You can spend months. That's why you listen to us because this is what we do. We'll tell you. That's the thing when we had, when we had, um, uh, what's his name, uh, uh, Lake Speed on. Right. I don't, he covered it on the show, but it was covered better in one of his videos. He did a video about the additives and said basically pretty much all of the fuel additives, he'll stand behind a hundred percent because they all have some kind of an astringent chemical in there that's going to help clean the injector and maybe even clean the lines, whatever. And whereas he's not this on the same, uh, page with the, with the oil additives, right? And I have to agree. I mean, listen. Expertise in oil. No. Well, yeah, but he's a tribologist. He, he also under, he understands chemicals and, and chemical compositions. You know, years ago, guys would put, you know, uh, uh, you throw some tranny fluid in because it had a high detergent, you know, all guys would put Marvel mystery oil in was, was a common one to fuel. Well, all good, you know, and Marvel's been around forever yet. I love sea foam and I've seen more views of it. Um, and I'm sure you've seen the guy project form on YouTube that I mean, he was like, Oh my God. But it did that, you know, this farm truck. And he was, and that's an oil additive and a gasoline. You know, the thing is, yeah, you got to just, you got to pick the one you want to try, and see if you, you may not see a, a cumulative, you know, uh, something you can point you figure out and say, wow, we, that made a difference because you could be on the cusp. It may be needed a couple of treatments, um, but with the fuel, uh, you know, like I said, guys would put kerosene all the time as we put kerosene in the fuel to help clean it. Uh, all sorts of stuff. Um, uh, what's the other chemical that's, uh, uh, well, we talked about because I put it by Fiat years ago is it, as I mean, as it has a tone has a tone. Yes. Guys put acetone in. I tried that in my car. I didn't see a difference, but just to let you know, Hey, Mac, a man, Brian just jumped in and he sent a picture of something called four four K detected it texted us at two Oh, three six seven zero four one, two seven. Okay. I don't know if you could see I can't make it out. Oh, four four K Brian, you hold it out. You haven't talked about that yet. That's a new one. That's a fuel, that's a fuel system cleaner and it's produced by I'm trying to see where it is. I'm trying to get a full, is that a diesel fuel cleaner? Because I know Brian's truck is a diesel fuel system cleaner. It is produced by BG. Oh BG. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's, um, that's not the worst that is written in some other language. So I'm afraid to even say I'll just butcher it. Yeah. How does that change your opinion? Well, it's true. You've got one. Well, that's why, you know, that's why when you find people to back it up with science, like Lake, you say, okay, now I can trust that that's got a scientific, uh, explanation to it that can be replicated and, you know, and, and maybe debunked or proven again. Exactly. Right. I couldn't agree anymore. But, um, you know, like with, um, trying products, oh my God, is like a bazillion of them. Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. One guy that I follow on YouTube and like every week he's got a different product to do the same thing of something that he did six months ago. Now you see, that's why I went with this place because I asked my buddy at the shop. I said I had a, what was it that I was trying to clean? Oh, I did just the chrome rims on my car. Well, you know, I couldn't, all the polishes I had weren't making them bright. And he said, yeah, try this. I got this for a flatbed as he's aluminum wheels on it. And you know, it didn't, it didn't work, but it worked on other stuff. So I tried it and a bang. It was unbelievable how well it worked. Yeah. And when I contacted the company, well, when I contacted the company and asked Evan specifically, I said it didn't use yes, those wheels on the flatbed, what happens with the Alcoa wheels. There's some process that happens when they get black and he goes, and then you can't just use the polish. You have to go through these other steps. He was, I can get those wheels perfect. If you want to have him call him, he says, I will, I'll walk him through it. So, but yeah, so, you know, I'm going by, I'm going by my results. I use this stuff on my car is so easy to use. And the results are so, so phenomenally pleasing. Yeah, I'm going to, I'm going to recommend it to everybody. Yeah. No, I, I, you know, I do the same thing with a number of products that I use, you know, you stick with what you know and what you're happy with. Exactly. That's right. That's all you can do. Yeah, that's right. That's not to say that there's nothing better out there. There may be, you know what, there may be, like you said, the shelves are filled with product. It's a matter of, you know, it's overwhelming. Yeah, you know, I've written a guy that does, and he's got a detailing business in Pennsylvania. And I'm like, no, pick something, stay with it. Stop telling me about the new product compared to new to the old and go, this one's better than my, my list first favorite choice. Yeah. Moving forward. You know what happens, John? When guys are in media, social media and they get the stuff sent to them, they have to, they have to do the videos because that's, that's their part of the bargain. So he's got to show you everything you get. He makes all the disclaimers like a lot of the YouTube people are not sponsored. Well, right. Like us too, all these problems we talked about today, you know, I paid for everything I got. I mean, nothing was sent to me for, I paid for all of it. What's good is that we can tell you for products stinks or not, because no one is backing us financially. Exactly. And we can give honest opinions and that's, that's usually what we do. Yeah. You guys are not for profit. I know that. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Definitely. Oh, yeah. It does hit the substance shows, doesn't it? Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. Oh, my Lord. Any of them enjoy the super right home if you got the convertible and guys have a great rest of your day. All right, John. Thanks, buddy. We'll talk to you soon. All right. Bye bye. All right. Well, it's at 516-572-7440. And John is right. There is so much out there. It is hard to choose. I was off and I stood there in front of the, the aisles and said, wow. And just looked and said, man, every single one, all these worked as good as they say they do. Right. You know, you know, I, I, I, I, I, it's hard to believe that you think they'd be one. I don't know. But yeah. When you sound. But again, you do, you use what you, what, what is favorable. And then, you know, you keep using it because you have a, a history with it. So, and that goes the same thing with, you know, penetrants and, you know, you know, penetrants are all junk. Haha. Sorry. You know, it rants and drill bits. Oh boy. Yeah. Sorry. We'll go. I'll argue with, you know, that other one, but let's go to the phones first and argue with our call. Hi. Call your onto motor mounts. There's no arguments here. Hey, Bob. Happy fourth of July weekend. Thanks, Bob. Nice to be an American, huh? Yes, sir. Absolutely. Wouldn't trade a dose of freedom this week. And we instill that in our families and our children. Yes. Exactly. So what spurred you to call? I had a question about your oil, your oil guy, your specials. Was it lake, lake, like Lakewood speed, Lake speed, Jr. Lakewood speed, I like Lakewood. That's good. My question to him being a specialist is how many actual oil manufacturers are there? I heard a number and I wonder if you heard the number. How many people, I mean, how many companies are actually producing motor oil? I'll tell you this. I know there's two real big ones. Yeah. I heard this either two or three. Right. That's the number I heard you were for. Okay. Well, there's subsidies. Lakewood went through this on the show where Exxon bought mobile, but on the mobile was other groups that maybe had that produced oil. So they all kind of conglomerated and I don't have the tree in front of me so I can't repeat it. I couldn't speak from truth by room. Yeah. There's not many. And as well as that, the additive packages that goes into the oil, there's only, there's like two big additive package manufacturers and I know Exxon mobile owns one of them. And then the other company, I think like the Penzoyl's a company with, they own the other one. So they control what goes into their oil. That's why those oils, Lake is very happy with it and recommends them a lot because you can trace back one step what they did. You don't have to go through, you know, a family tree, the genealogy tree. So got it. Yeah. Okay. Nope. I had there were four major oil producers, you know, either court or the five court on the wall that you see. Yeah. Or the 55 gallon or the 30 gallon drums. Yeah. All right. That was the question. And hey, he was, he was a great guest. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Lake is great. We'll have one again. You know, he agreed to come on again in the future as things progress on the field. That's a good looking. Yeah. Happy fourth, gentlemen. Thanks, Bob. Enjoy the freedom. All right. So long. I got to tell you one more thing that happened this week that was that's going to flip out somebody at the shop tomorrow. Oh, yeah. Yeah. It doesn't involve lighting yourself on fire. No, it doesn't. Another car came into the, to the realm and I'll put pictures up today. I will put pictures on, on our weekly thing. We'll come forward to that. In fact, you know, I give us a hint. Yeah. It's big. I, I actually sent. Yeah. What about the car? Hey, I sent, I sent Kevin a picture and then he was like, wow. And then I said, yeah, you have no idea. Another Imperial. It's a 72 Mercury Marquis. Yeah. And now I'll tell you what, I'm going to show you why I'm going to show you the secret part of this car. Why? I'm going to show you the secret part of this car that I'm not going to tell. It's like a, I'm not going to tell people about it. They're going to have to want, they're going to have to go to social media to see it. Okay. This is what it is. Yeah. Okay. Exactly what I said. So that's it. No more. Now be quiet. I don't want to ruin this. I don't want, I want people to go and see this for themselves so we can get some, we can get some hits. Did that have a final top on it? Yes. Holy smoke and mirrors. You got to be kidding me. Power windows. All sorts of crazy stuff. Yeah. Okay. Look at you. It said, that's a Mike Brady special there. Well, now it's a Mike M special because it's, it's his and just couldn't pass up the deal. You know, found something. You know, got a good, good, got a good price and need some work. You know, whole day all. Yep. So, you know, need some work, but we'll, we'll, we'll, we'll get through it. Ray Coogley. Moogley. What? Yeah. You better have a lot of room for that part. I know. All right. So we're wrapping it up now. I tell you what, Evan Stager, we'll see. Maybe he'll come on next week with us and we'll talk about more time to shine. Other than that, stay tuned for a thunder road, Kim Show, because you know, you like that show better than ours. Chris, what do I tell the people waiting for me out in the parking lot? Don't follow us home and watch your freedom this weekend. You got it. All right. So for Chris, what's a regular read and we're the rest of our fine audience. More on Math Radio signing off, we'll see you next week. Say bye. Say bye. That's it. Just those joint ones. Say bye. Did you always say, say, say bye on 90.3 WHPC. See you. Bye. (upbeat music)
