Hello, welcome back to money and mental peace with a cool episode not only talking about why college is a waste of money and hopefully that Sparked your interest, but I got some friends with me today. Who are you? Hi? My name's Alyssa. Hey My name is lizard breath and I like pizza. Oh I like pizza too You know, I like pizza but like I feel like I feel like I like like Hearty food like stew or chili and cornbread or like Thanksgiving dinner or something more than pizza Pizza is the best food on the planet. If you eat a whole pizza, then it is hearty That's true And sometimes you can get deals on pizza so you can save money like saving money for college Right, you know because today we're talking about three ways to have someone else pay for school so you can save money Okay, before we actually actually get into it because I have if you're new here We have a whole intro to do and everything I want everyone to hear Alyssa's bonus reason Of how you can have someone else pay for your schooling and when I say this I'm not talking about like your parents Just automatically pay for your school. I'm talking about like other ways to Get it cheap like that. I did with nobody else paying for it, but Alyssa has an idea Just marry rich Okay, you find a rich band and Or woman You make them fall in love with you You make them no, no, no by being charming and kind and showing the love of Jesus to them because they're greedy Obviously cuz they're rich Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, if someone's rich it does not mean they're greedy does That they're lucky It could also mean they just handle their money. Well, excuse you You're right. You're right. Cara's greedy All right, all right, all right, we're gonna start the episode everyone shut up so we can get to the rest of it Hey girl, welcome to money and mental peace Do you want to find scholarships and avoid student loans? You find yourself googling easy scholarships and how to pay for college Do you feel overwhelmed with life in general that you can't even think about paying for next semester? Hey, I'm Cara and in college I too was worried if I was good at money I couldn't find scholarships that worked specifically for me And I didn't know how to get started while juggling homework and all the things but that changed through prayer and God's direction I tested out of classes learned to budget and found those perfect Scholarships and even had ten thousand dollars left over in the bank after graduation and BTW My parents weren't able to help me financially either if you're ready to find scholarships specific to you manage your money well and just stop being broke then grab your cold brew and TI 89 because class is now in session lizard Her name is Liz, but we call it lizard. Do you want to welcome everyone back to class in session? Welcome back to class in session and I don't have a cold brew But I have a bubbly actually no, I'm cheating on bubbly with lacrocks. I have a sparkling water and it is coconut and That's that's what's up I thought for a minute you're gonna say and it's cocaine. I was like no Christian podcast, okay College is a waste of money Why why why do I say that do you guys have any ideas? I have an article that explains it from like like some person's opinion but like unless you were a homeschooled and Like you or you're really smart. You're like you probably don't have a great foundation for it So probably just don't do it For college. I felt like I would have had a better foundation for it if I went to public school Okay, well, we're not talking about the social aspects of things. We're talking about either I'm not talking about the social aspects I'm talking about like the curriculum stuff and just the idea of doing stuff that way I don't know. I mean, I guess our curriculums work, but you wouldn't have been good at public school either in that area Yeah, but maybe I would have been forced to be good at it in some ways. You wouldn't have okay, okay sisters So I feel like there are other sides in the like Sometimes there's so many people in public schools that like kids don't get challenged or learn in whatever ways or like Personal learning times, but also some people maybe want more of like the routine structure is probably what you're saying Alyssa just gave her the eye Alyssa Alyssa likes the free bird Of it all. Okay, so why I'm explaining this there's an article About a Harvard trained economist, which doesn't mean Everything that he knows everything but like it's Harvard. Okay, and why college is a waste of money and far too risky is what he says Now to clarify spoiler. I'm not saying it's all a waste of money, but a lot of times it is So that's what we're getting to It's funny that like the catchy thing and this is it's a Harvard trained economist because that person went to college obviously And they're saying don't go to college, but that's what makes him valid is because he was Harvard trained Exactly. So it's like an oxymoron, right? um basically this person is saying and This is not he's not like the end all be all of wisdom here, but this has just got me thinking about how He's saying it's far too risky far too expensive and in many cases a waste of money Plus 18 year olds face a ton of odds when they borrow for college. The reason why he's saying this is they're he's talking about borrowing loans for college, which remember As we talk about here, that's not like a requirement to do but I understand What he's talking about so for example parent plus loans are burying families in college debt Apparently outstanding student loans now total 1.7 trillion Dollars more than credit card debt and the u.s and Some 100 billion dollars Constitutes borrowing by parents on their children's behalf, which by the way, I would say never borrow money on your children's for half You don't know if they'll finish college or anything. No, don't do that. That's a bad idea That's rough, but not only that it's the interest Charging interest at like this one that says oftentimes 3.74% on their borrowing Meaning if you're just paying the minimum payments as like each week and month goes along Your Interest is growing faster than you can pay it off. So it's almost like it's getting higher Now it's not always if you like pay it off fast enough, but there are some horror stories of like yeah I started with 40,000 in debt over 20 years now. It's at 50 like what happened It's like being paying the minimum amount everything and so Basically they're suggesting A lot of times if you can do it without going into excessive debt Which actually the points that they make i'm going to bring up in this episode So i'm not going to list all of them, but they also say doing your research in the sense of like Is underwater basket weaving actually going to make you money and actually worth getting a loan for it If you can like pay for it out of pocket and it's your passion, okay, but like just learning Thinking through that it's not like you have to go to colleges the next step with like all this debt and everything So I have some points on three ways others can pay for it for you But do you guys have any thoughts after all of that? And you can say no They're just looking at me with horror stricken in their eyes I was thinking about your grandfather. I'm looking at you for the answers. I just want to hear the conclusion here because i'm interested These are just oh, I didn't even tell them these are my two good friends and they're also in college aged and everything I'm not currently in college. I'm kind of in the point of At the point of life where i'm like should I go back next semester or should I not but you know I do kind of want to get my bachelor's degree. So probably going to continue at a very cheap university And see that's great because you're not doing it because You feel like it has to be this next step immediately after high school or you will A meteor will fall on you and you'll explode like you know, I'm saying like I mean it's a decision Based on like wane your interests the options the funding etc That's what it's made out to be is the meteor will fall and the world will end and shatter If you don't go to college Directly after high school. I know that's just so much pressure. I know yeah, no And i'm going to associate in two years Oh, that's a lie. Okay, it took me like three and a half to get my associates. Okay That's realistic and good for your mental health in comparison. Yeah, I mean, I think I probably took up to Four or five years from my associates because I didn't know what I wanted to do So I just went and did like the full time like I worked I did an internship at the national park service I did I actually was like doing other stuff. So I just did part-time, but then when I decided what I wanted to do From that point on finishing like the internship and going to a new place and then it was like a year and a half And I was done because I had done all of that like pre-work and like researching and praying and working For like I said an internship and a national park like doing other stuff and then it was finally like, okay I've saved money. I've thought it through. I've learned about the world Through working at a government agency, which is kind of stressful And then I was like, okay I'm doing this and then I had the money and I was like boom boom boom and then I finished so sometimes you just have to like Be patient with yourself You know I'm going to the same college you went to kara to get my bachelors by the way Eastern It's very economical and it's very close And it's got nice colors Literally today elissa while I was at work probably the worst time to be thinking about this I was daydreaming I know you had said that and I was daydreaming of driving up with you and going again and just walking around and working at the library and everything so No, no like not like working there, but like taking my laptop Like taking my lap because I'm an alumni so I should be able to just get like Still be like wifi pass and just I just want to like If you'll if you'll let me go up with you and then I just like sometimes I just like Being at that college place and it inspires me to work on my business to help college students So, you know, can I can I hang out sometimes? Yes, totally Dude Wouldn't it be fun? Okay. I just thought of this. This is this is not even in my outline Wouldn't it be fun some time to go around campus and ask people their opinions on things and like record it and put it on the podcast I'll hold the camera and and I'll run the sound or I'll also be in the video. I don't care It sounds like fun. I would love that you can make a little video and then put stuff on the podcast the sound of it Whenever you want to start filming your podcast to tell us so we can like look really cool And like we should get a really like like cool looking podcast room I'm gonna redo my parents basement. So it's gonna look like a coffee house And we could totally film down there sometimes Okay guys stay tuned. We might have future plans future ideas. Were you gonna say something Liz? I was just thinking I could come with you, but I I don't work on weekends and that would be the only time I could go Oh, I mean we could always go up on a weekend, but I don't know if you'd have any classes then also, I want to say to like like maybe like Kids with parents who are rich who can afford to send them to nice places Like that's great and maybe you should go because that would be awesome And maybe like especially if it's like a christian college you could get married and fall in love with another christian And like get your bachelor's degree too. So that's great too. Yeah, so like this like no guilt or shade or pressure like if someone's paying for yeah, if someone's like paying for your college like Accept it and thank them and even in the midst of that though You might find like oh you want spending money or do different things and you'll be like that's You could listen to my episodes on budgeting then Okay, um, that was great I just wanted you guys listening to feel like how relatable Hopefully we all are and like we get like we did what you're trying to do. All right Relatable okay Okay, so How you're gonna get other people to pay for your school? Okay, thank you for that segue lizard. Um She's waiting patiently Start start besides marrying greedy men Start okay, you guys need to stop so I could tell them these points All right, you can start with testing out of classes So um Liz Liz looked horrified. Alyssa's like, oh, yeah, nod your head now Now you don't have to do this. This is just Cara presenting options Testing bad at tests is one big test. You have to know stuff I did so bad on the acd t and the acuplacer thingy thing and all the things I did terrible they were horrible It was painful. It never do again Don't recommend even though i'm sure it was good advice, but like for me I can I can deal with a class and get a B or an A or whatever and it's fine but one big test Horrible okay, so I want anyone listening to acknowledge that and if this is not for you You just shrug your shoulders and say That's fine. I listen to all of Cara's other almost 300 episodes that she can suggest things on and I pray about it And it's fine. So I totally get it if people do not want to test out of stuff What I am saying in this regard is If it's something that you just studying Like you just maybe you're in A senior and you just finished whatever world history or car or algebra too I don't know what they do in senior year anymore or like or like biology You can look up they're called clap tests. They stand for college level examination program Or something like that And I tested out of my first year of college through tests through Basically, I had already learned the content and I took a test for it So the test was it was long. So you can either do it Where you just learned the content like or even just like all throughout high school Even from like freshman up you you learn a class you see if there's a clap for you learn the class You see if there's a clap for it So you're not like studying something new or you can do what I did Which actually was sit down with the study guide and actually entirely learned something new and then went and tested out of it And that's your preference if you hate tests Don't have to do that. I was homeschooled. I know homeschoolers don't always do tests But I was kind of trained on tests from like doing co-ops So like I was a little bit okay. I was more okay with it But do as that's not fake homeschool and when you do it with other people All right, um, and so but do you guys know that testing out of classes can be free? I mean you guys probably do because I already talked to you about it in the past but I want anyone listening to go over to modern states. I think it's calm I shall look it up Modern states Yeah, so free so freshman Didn't you have to pay like Okay, so when I took clips I didn't know about this or it wasn't established yet So I did pay but it was like a hundred bucks and I got three to six college credits Imagine versus at our community college when one college credit was like a hundred At so that's like $300 for class or at eastern when I went to eastern Um, well, but I did some stuff different than you might be doing So I don't know but at my certain level of business school it was like $1,500 for a class So like it just depends on if I could get an entire class for 100 bucks Why not? But modern states does what they call freshman year for free where they have courses online That is like study guides or training you and if you go through that Even if you already just like studied it in your last year of high school like biology or whatever you could still do a refresher on their courses and then they You take the Claptest and then they reimburse you for that. So it's like you are paying for it, but it's like reimbursement now like I said I didn't do modern states personally because I didn't know about it then So I'm not sure if it's just if you pass they reimburse you so I guess that's a motivator But that way you can learn about claptest you can test out of and claptists are generally like the pre-rex math science Humanities social studies of some sort you can get your basics like your first year or two um for free So that's a way that others can pay for your school. What do you guys think about that? Okay, the idea is really nice and I like it and I think it's good and I support it My only problem is is I'm just not smart enough Okay, if anyone listening out there I encourage y'all to just look into it and try it even if you're not sure Because I studied with someone and we did it together so we could support one another But if you don't want to do it and you don't feel comfortable do it like liz Don't do it. I have two other suggestions for it. I just want to give a disclaimer that liz is smart She just says she's not Okay, dude. She's going into nursing and she's like over there doing like her anatomy stuff 4.0 She's a 4.0 and she's feeling this well, maybe I think it's lower now because I got that b minus Okay, okay It's not going to be that low though Okay, but listen even if you have a 4.0, whatever if you don't feel comfortable taking a test, that's okay I don't learn things. This is my dilemma. I'm just complaining here. Don't it just ignore me No, I love it. You're a voice of reason of anyone else listening if you don't feel comfortable doing it You don't have to do this. I'm just naming some options So the next one that I was going to talk about is scholarships I'm sure anybody's listening to the podcast is guessing I would talk about scholarships Um, but there's a couple different types of scholarships. It's like applying For stuff like writing the essay and whatever you're doing and trying to get scholarships I'm not going super into that because I have so many episodes on All sorts of scholarships and how to apply and how I find scholarships for students also going to talk about stuff that's more like stipends or like have you or like internships. Yeah, so when I worked with the national park service um, and that's actually Where I did the kayaking stuff. I think I told you guys before Um, so yeah, I set up like a we got like a federal grant proposal that I had written and we got money for a kayak program That's cool. I got a lot of experience huge resume boost but through that I did it through americor which if you like Complete they give you a stipend. So it's not like straight-paid. It's stipends So it's like a different taxable thing. It's just them being specific and weird But if you finish that you get an education award So that's a different instance where it's like you're getting a scholarship, but you'll know you'll get it if you like finish this term which is a little bit more like Right guaranteed versus like oh, I just wrote this essay And applied for it. So if you're interested in something like that they also have like suggestions um For gap years you can do this for or whatever you can head on over to like americor.com Or I did it through the student conservation association. So just throw out those ideas. Also, I have a gap year episode I don't know if y'all listening have looked it up. I'm gonna tell you which number it is once I Pull it up It's being finicky I'm sorry guys. I coffee cough Coffee cough, okay. It was episode 10 way back in the day All right, so can you guys guess what the third one is on how others would pay for your college The government Okay, actually I did not add that in but I probably should yes you can get a Pell grant if you're at a certain level of income If you're poor like me Or if you are 24 and over and they only count your income versus your parents if you're poor or if you're old You can get the Pell grant dude. No, it's not just you still have to be poor But I mean like okay If you're poor you probably like need it though Morris from Panera okay guys so basically like Well, I was finishing well, I was finishing Like no one's gonna know who that is Okay, okay, so while I was Finishing college and y'all know I took longer because I was figuring out debt free listen to this podcast learn how to do it More efficiently than me that rhymed I think But I was still finishing stuff when I was 24 25 But I finished debt free so it's worth it But because of that they took my income From my like tax returns off and not my parents And I was still earning income but I had been living at home and like renting To like drive to school and go to school and so I was Still at a lower income technically because I was in school. That's how I like out of nowhere I was like, okay I think I need to finish working a little more or take time off school to pay for college Oh, look I got the Pell grant and so that's what those levels are That's not what my third thing was anybody else But that's nice Because I think mine is based off of like my parents' income But there was a year where we like needed more money so my dad had two jobs So we made more during that year So I'm getting less now because it's based off of two years previous or whatever Isn't that weird and specific it's like but like you want more money to help the family which makes sense But then like it doesn't help you in college entirely Well, actually it has to do with work. So the third one was how somebody else could pay for school for you So that you can save money because college is often a waste of money If it's just yours or alone is work for a company that pays tuition help Yeah Do they actually exist? Okay, I'm going to tell you about 12 companies that will pay for your college education either Straight up pay for it or like a tuition amount You know Yeah, um apparently amazon Boeing Chipotle Chipotle, I love But it's there's different qualifications right for chipotle It says you must work at least 15 hours per week For four months to qualify for the program other ones you have to be full time So, you know, it just depends uh discover Has some programs with it disney pappa john's starbucks Taco bell starbucks is evil. I loved it. I love taco bell and the taco bell. I had a couple hours ago Didn't sit too well Everyone always says about taco bell. No. No, I taco bell like every other day and i'm normally fine It was just today it was some bad taco bell, but it was the same thing I always get the same thing. I get the chicken quesadilla the nacho fries and the baja blast So good. That sounds really yummy. I love their quesadillas Also target which sometimes we call targe because we fancy T-mobile verizon and your favorite elissa Walmart I love walmart. I'm going there tonight Like that somebody said they pay like a lot of money just to be a greeter Oh, yeah, another walmart greeter. There's a couple different graders This is this one guy with long hair who just like stares ahead with like kind of a smug grin He just says how's it going in a very quiet voice. He just doesn't like stop. He just stares I had with like at these grins the whole time. He's just funny. He doesn't really Look at anyone. He just smiles and says how's it going really quietly like you'd miss him if you weren't listening for him Is that what your retirement plan is? No, that guy's really young So are you going to walmart tonight to find a husband? I'm going to find chicken I would actually come with you But I can't move Yeah, I don't remember why I want okay, so I want chicken. I want him to get I want to make chicken gnocchi soup We're getting off tack. I'm bringing this back, but I hope you feel better lizard She's being a little sicky. All right guys, that was a bit chaotic, but those are my like my favorite episodes. So Even if you're not working on one of these companies where you work Check into maybe HR they have some Program dug down dig down deep and maybe they do some sort of tuition reimbursement. We're not sure um Lastly If you're like kara, that's all good, but it's overwhelming to me Um, I actually offer a service where I found students find student scholarships for college lizard. Can you pitch them on my service? Yes, yes kara finds scholarships And she makes it all better by doing the thinking for you And doing the work because it takes work and it's actually you don't realize if you go and you try to find scholarships One hour later. How far have you gotten? Not very far. Maybe a little far You're gonna definitely need to put several more hours into it at least And then probably more and more and more and more, but kara can do it all for you for only Okay, that's that's not true. It's not only nine hundred that I love having somebody else pitch it because i'm like, what do you think about what I do? Yeah, so I totally find student scholarships for college that you can apply for because I am not an Identity theft who takes your name and does the applying for you, but I find Scholarship specific to your situation you answer questions for me go through details If you're interested plan a free scholarship strategy session to get started with me at calendly.com slash money and mental peace Did you say free Yes, okay, well, it's not free for me to do everything, but it's a free like discovery call Scholarship strategy session.
