The Princess and the Governor It looks like Captain Broughha has begun to make his move. The KRAWLR assault vehicle has taken up position right outside the entrance to The Tunnels. Or at least the corridor that leads to The Tunnels. Meanwhile, Cindy has asked another person for help in the search for the Waffle Batter sphere. This thing appears to be becoming the worst-kept secret in Middling Fair! But, while the gang has to wait for Princess to arrive at the library end of The Tunnels, we get to jump over to the bus and hear Old Man Spooner sing a song. It may be the last moment of peace we get as the story heats up.

Previously, Mayor Rory gave Cindy just a few days to fix the problems her tunnels are causing throughout Midling Fair. Cindy learned that an object known as the Waffle Batter Sphere could be the answer. She, Detective Hart and Buzz, Scoop, Cracker Jack Thomas, need to use the bus known as "Princess" to travel to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. They believe the golden Waffle Batter Sphere is hidden there. Everyone is dispersed to prepare for the trip, but it is a journey that may never happen. Captain Bruha has briefed his magenta fedora strike force on a mission to obtain the one-of-a-kind books that document the mysterious spheres used in the tunnel. The books are currently in the tunnel library, the very room where Cindy, Hart and Buzz plan to meet. As this chapter begins, the imposing advanced urban assault vehicle known as "The Crawler" rolls up to and easily traverses the debris field at one pasta place. The armored vehicle stops some distance from an automated security checkpoint. The gate is positioned at the entrance to the corridor that leads to the tunnels. Inside the crawler, Captain Bruha and the rest of the elite magenta fedora's team, Chief and Ten-Toes, look out at the access corridor just beyond the checkpoint. "We're ready to roll, Captain." "Not just yet, Chief. Something doesn't feel quite right. I need to think. What would General Dismay do in a case like this?" "General Dismay, sir." "What?" "You said General Dismay. Did you mean General Disarray?" "I think you need your hearing checked, Chief. That is exactly what I said. Disarray. We need to hold this position and camouflage the crawler." "Bagging your pardon, sir, but we're in the middle of a debris field full of concrete blocks, rubble and dirt." "Meet the challenge, Chief." "Yell, sir!" Elsewhere, suitcase and briefcase in hand and entering via a secret access route, Detective Hart returns to the library. He discovers two unexpected guests in the room. "Clamity, what are you doing here? I thought this mission was supposed to be kept on the lowdown. Haddie, civilian." "Haddie had the good sense to come see me. She asked if I could transport you via the crawler. Unfortunately, the vehicle appears to have vanished." "Along with Captain Bruha and the rest of his magenta fedoras." "So you decided to come down here and look for it?" "Negative." "Captain Bruha and the fedoras must be operating under independent orders. That makes my immediate responsibility the safety of middling fare." "Finding the waffle better sphere is now my mission priority." "I still don't see how you're going to help." "I have my man here ready to work on the crawler, aka Princess, as soon as it arrives." "Ready, willing, and able, sir?" "Outstanding. Work on it. Roger." "To prevent accidents in the tunnels, we installed a governor on the bus." "No one is going to make a joke about the princess and the governor." "Like, no, but I can, like, go get Danny Hillcrest." "No, the governor prevents Princess from traveling over four miles an hour, so we need to remove it." "Like, I get it." "Right." "Like, the princess and the governor." "Like, that sounds like a sitcom." "Yeah, now I get it." At that very moment, like clockwork, Princess slowly rolls toward the library terminus of her programmed route. As is often the case, old man Spooner is riding on a trailer hitched to the back of the bus. He is happily playing a tune, seemingly to no one. "Let's go crazy on Waikiki." "Run with scissors along the beach at Old Maui. It's you and me, absurdly in old Hawaii." "Let's touch lava, the killer way." "Then stare into the sun, down on the bay." "It's you and me." "Up is Mali, in old Hawaii." "We coulda listened to the ocean while we shone our sunscreen ocean, even catch a little rip tight when we're through." "We coulda knew well by the pool bar order, or to be served a trachary canosas is the best in Honolulu." "Let's go crazy and have a ball." "Do it in a big way, no not midway at all." "It's you and me, infirmary in old Hawaii." "Yes, you and me, disorderly." "In old Hawaii, just you and me, absurdly in old Hawaii." "Well, it looks like we've reached the end of the line, cuddles." "Cuddles? Where are you?" "Fast asleep. Dogs sure do like to nap. Not a bad idea, but right now, I need to use the little spooners room." "I'll let cuddles sleep until I get back." "Like, according to the schedule, princess should be outside right now." "On it." "Let's hustle people. That sphere isn't going to find itself." "Hang on a second calamity. Who said you were coming along?" "This mission is too dangerous for just civilians. You need someone trained in the art of war." "Like, I'd rather be trained in the, like, art of Bob Ross." "This isn't open for debate. After all, technically, the crawler is still government property. Those magenta fedoras never got around to decommissioning it." "Great. Tripped up by government red tape." "Try not to fall over it as we get on the bus." "Alright, let's move out." Outside the corridor that leads to the tunnels, as the sun sets, Chief Fententos have finished camouflaging the crawler. "Tossing on netting and peppering it with gravel was a great idea, Tentos." "Challenge met." "Captain, it will be dark soon. Is it time to head into the tunnels?" "Not just yet, Chief. I need to be sure we can get right to those books. General disdain is waiting for them." "General distant." "What's that, Chief?" "Nothing, sir." "I need to consult my charts. I'm a Leo, right?" "Yes. I'm going to take a short walk to make sure my compass works." "What's the word, Chief? Are we moving out?" "Not yet, Tentos. Just a bit longer." "I should have brought some knitting to do." "I didn't know you knitted." "I don't, but it looks like I have time to learn. Sir." What is happening to Captain Bruja? When will the magenta fedoras make their move to gain possession of the books written by Romeo Sykes? And can calamity successfully pilot princess all the way to Niagara Falls? For answers, be sure to listen to the nail-biting conclusion of Act 1, Chapter 12, Going for the Gold!
