This was commanded of Adam and it was commanded to Noah after the flood. If we were product of evolution, we could shrug our shoulders and seek to simply exist until we die bearing nothing, producing nothing and thereby living a life in vain.

Jerusalem would be that fig tree that was to be cursed.
