We're following this breaking news. Good morning. Thanks for listening. It's going to be nice with her here while the really big story is on. You're listening to the Today in San Diego podcast. Good morning. It's Tuesday, August 6th, 2024. I'm Nicole Gomez. It's been nearly four years since Maya Miliette, a woman from Tulavista, disappeared from her home. Her husband Larry Miliette is charged with her murder, and their three children are stuck in the middle. We could learn who's left in charge of the kids by the end of this week. Yesterday, two judges in separate courtrooms handled cases that could determine what happens to the children. They've been staying with Larry's parents for the last few years. Maya's sister has filed to take over care of her nieces and nephews. Their grandparents are fighting that. Meantime, Larry's new attorneys are asking for an extension which could delay his murder trial currently set for January. Well, a 12-year-old girl and her parents are suing Santagito Union High School District and a former campus supervisor accused of sexually assaulting her. 21-year-old Omar Galiana pleaded not guilty to 12 felony charges, including forcible lewd act and sexual assault charges against that 12-year-old girl, as well as supplying cannabis to a 12-year-old boy. The victim's attorney says administrators and staff knew what was going on and failed to do anything about it. The complaint states the alleged incidents happened on and off campus, including in Galiana's car. Galiana is not eligible for bail because of the severity of the charges against him and the possibility of him being around other children. He's scheduled to be back in court in October. The Santagito Union High School District, at last check, has not received the lawsuit, but said in a statement, "We took immediate action to remove him from employment and work cooperatively with law enforcement so that facts could be gathered and justice may be served." Well, nurses at Radio Children's Hospital have reached a tentative agreement with the hospital and could vote on it as soon as this morning. The agreement hopes to address what the union described as below market wages for newer nurses, plus pay increases for the rest of them. Part-time employees would also be paid the same rate as full-time staff. It comes after hundreds of nurses walked off the job last month. Well, today Mayor Gloria will sign the University City Community Plan. It changes land use policies in the area, allowing up to 29,000 new high-density homes. It replaces the nearly four-decade-old plan for University City. Now there's an emphasis on both housing and commercial space. It will also add transit improvements, as well as pedestrian and bike paths. Plan doesn't authorize housing projects immediately, and it's expected to take nearly 25 years to reach the area's new capacity. All right, let's talk Olympic. San Diego will be well-represented in Paris today in women's park-style skateboarding. All three members of Team USA have ties to San Diego. Bryce Wetstein lives in Encinitas. Ruby Lilly lives in Oceanside, and Mina Stess trains out of Vista. Pre-limbs are underway this morning. And the U.S. women's soccer team is playing in a semi-final match against Germany this morning. The quarter-final match against Japan was tense with the first goal coming an extra time, winning it for Team USA. Two San Diego wave players are on the U.S. Olympic team. Center back Naomi Gurma has started every game so far. Forward Jaden Shaw hasn't played yet. She was sidelined with an injury at the start of the Olympics, but cleared to be on the bench for the last game against Japan. Kickoff today is at nine o'clock this morning. You can watch live on Peacock. Let's get you a check of your first alert forecast. Take a morning, Shina. - Good Tuesday morning. As we head through the afternoon, it's gonna be another hot one. Sunny skies, temperatures at the beaches. Right around the mid-70s, maybe even upper 70s. Coastal communities today will be around 80 degrees in sunny, maybe feeling a little muggy too. For the Ellen valleys, we'll be in the mid to low 90s. Sunny, little muggy. And then for the mountains, we could see a very small chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. It'd be pretty brief though. Mountains will be in about the mid-90s. Foothills though, close to 100. For the deserts, still in excessive heat warning there with temperatures near about 115. And for the Ellen valleys, Foothills and mountains, we do still have the heat advisory today. Then we'll see temperatures lower a little bit over the next few days, but it's still gonna be pretty hot. So make sure you hydrate and stay cool. And if you can, stay in the AC. Well, maybe today you can help save a life. Earlier this year, the American Red Cross declared a national emergency due to the shortage of blood. After last month, the national blood supply has fallen by over 25%. Now the local Red Cross is urging San Diegans to donate. Officials say most of their July blood drives were negatively impacted by summer heat waves across the country. They're now faced with a shortfall of over 17,000 blood donations. It comes as blood donations are being sent to hospitals faster than they're coming in, exacerbated by that same dangerous heat. Blood donors of all types are being urged to donate, especially O type blood. Can even get a $20 Amazon gift card if you donate during the month of August. You can sign up at theredcrossblood.org.
