We're following this breaking news. Good morning. Thanks for listening. It's going to be nice, but we're here while the really big story's on. You're listening to the Today in San Diego podcast. Good morning. I'm Michelle Medina with NBC seven. Here's a look at some of the headlines. Fire crews are battling the heat this morning as they work to put out fires across California, including here in San Diego County. The McCain fire in the Far East County is 95% contained. It is burned nearly 1600 acres. It broke out Monday when a car flipped over and caught fire on interstate eight in boulevard. Cal fire says while smoke may be visible from the freeway, it's well within the fire perimeter and does not pose a threat. An investigation is underway after San Diego police shot and killed a man in La Jolla. It happened yesterday morning just after seven on La Jolla boulevard in boardwalk. Officers alleged that a man in his 20s was carrying a knife and causing a disturbance. They say they opened fire after he ignored officer's request to drop the weapon. Finding parking in the convoy district can be frustrating, especially on a holiday weekend and it soon could get more challenging. There are now less parking spaces since the city completed one phase of a plan to install bike lanes to help ease the parking gridlock San Diego City leaders changed the parking scheme on some side streets to create more spaces. These owners say it's a risk they're hoping to cash in on while some visitors feel it's a hassle. Like today we came here, we thought it would be a really random time and we had trouble finding parking. Had we been aware of that, it wouldn't have stopped us. We're willing to take the risk to see, to grow our business. According to the city's parking redistribution plan, the convoy district partnership is working with the city to create a community parking district, implementing shared parking agreements with nearby businesses. It would also create private shuttle services during peak times of the day. A new milestone in San Diego's efforts to repair rough roads, crews finish the final stretch of roadway adjacent and signal avenue in Nestor. It marks 250 miles of slurry seal work in the last fiscal year. Other projects included Sarah Mesa in Pacific Beach. The transportation department says most of these areas had decent roads to start but needed maintenance. We celebrate this milestone and tout our slurry seal program because slurry seal is a really cost-effective tool to preserve our roads and extend the life for approximately five to eight years. And it's important to note that that's before the road deteriorates so it's much more cost-effective. This comes as San Diego Street scored below the industry standard in an assessment earlier this year. The city's current road score is a 63. The industry standard is 70. Now here's meteorologist Angelica Campos. She has a look at the forecast. Hi meteorologist Angelica Campos. Another round of excessive heat warnings today is for the mountains and deserts. For the mountain communities it'll end tonight at 9 p.m. But for the deserts it'll be until Wednesday night at 9 p.m. High pressure center over the region is going to keep those temperatures ranging above normal and we may see near record heat once again as we head into the new week. Anytime highs will average in the low to mid-70s for coastal communities but San Diego could get close to 80 degrees inland valleys will average in the upper 80s a little bit better. That's why they're no longer under an excessive heat warning. But in the mountains expect 90 to almost 100 degrees and close to 120 in our desert communities. It is going to stay warm for this upcoming week so be ready. The heat is here to stay. Today is the last day to receive a summer gift bag from the San Diego Blood Bank. They're asking for blood donations over this holiday weekend in exchange for a gift. It includes a one-of-a-kind frisbee, beach ball, water bottle and more. Organizers say summer months are crucial for blood donations as demand increases across the county. Those who'd like to donate must at least be 17 years old, 110 pounds and be in generally good health. Thanks for listening to our podcast Today in San Diego. I'm Nichelle Medina with NBC7.
