[MUSIC PLAYING] Good Monday morning. It is Kale and Company Live here on WKXL, nhchockradio.com. Great to have you along with us on this beautiful day. Great way to start the week. And we are presented by Northeast Delta Devil. With individual and family plans designed to fit your lifestyle, you can learn more and find your plan. At DeltaDentalCoversMe.com. And a delightful day to do anything outdoors weekend. That's a mess. But today looks good. And we're much better off being here in New Hampshire than in the southern part of this country as Hurricane Debbie strengthened in the Gulf of Mexico. Is it bored down on Florida's Big Bend early today? And just a little over an hour ago, I believe, Hurricane Debbie made landfall, according to the National Hurricane Center. And tell you what, it is going to be quite a while that Hurricane Debbie is going to be having an impact. What had been a tropical storm most of Sunday formed into a category one hurricane before midnight and continued to intensify overnight, making landfall with sustained winds of 80 miles per hour at around 7 o'clock, a little over an hour ago, with a wind gust of 95 recorded at the Weather Station on Horseshoe Beach in Florida as of 8 o'clock. Just a few minutes ago, the National Hurricane Center said that Debbie remained a hurricane just inland with 75 miles per hour, sustained winds about 60 miles northwest of Cedar Key, moving northeast to 10 miles per hour. Debbie's Hurricane Force winds extended 25 miles from its center, and tropical storm force winds were observed 140 miles from Debbie's core. The National Weather Service also issued an updated tornado watch Monday morning that includes orange, lake, Seminole, Osiola, Polk, and Volusia, plus the Gulf Coast in north Florida, and that runs through 4 p.m. today. The outer bands to the east of Debbie's center have spawned several tornado warnings across Florida as the storm churned north. And while wind and storm surge are an immediate threat, flooding remains major concern in the days to come, said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis during press conference this morning. DeSantis said the storm has produced, and will likely produce significant flooding events from Sarasota, Bradenton, all the way up to northern Florida. He said there's a threat that's ongoing, and will ensue over the next few days. So I know a lot of you tuned in, have friends and family in the Florida area, so we wish them all the best. It is the 4th hurricane to hit Florida in August since 2000. Following Hurricane Charlie in 2004, Katrina, I think everybody remembers that one in 2005, and last year's Hurricane Edalia, which also made landfall in the Big Bend region, as they call it. So our thoughts and prayers go out to all our friends and family in Florida, and it's going to continue up the East Coast. There are already warnings in effect for Georgia and South Carolina as well as the hurricane churns, Hurricane Debbie making landfall, just a little over an hour ago in Florida. Lots of things going on over the weekend. Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee, Kamala Harris, has still not named her running mate. They have been saying for the past few days now the announcement is imminent, but it has not taken place as yet. Senator Mark Kelly, a Democrat from Arizona, who is a top contender to be Vice President Harris's running mate in the 24 election, posted a cryptic message on social media amid the Veepstakes speculation, and it read, whether it was from my time in the Navy and at NASA, of course he was an astronaut, Mark Kelly, serving in the United States Senate or visiting our troops overseas, I've learned that when your country asks you to serve, you always answer the call. That's what Kelly posted on X on Sunday. Harris met with potential vice presidential candidate picks on Sunday as the presumptive Democrat presidential nominee is believed to be still a day or two away from making a final decision on a running mate. Among those on the list are Governor's Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Tim Walz of Minnesota, who was scheduled to be in New Hampshire over the weekend, but did not make the trip, and speculation was that it was because he was being vetted by the Harris campaign, and of course, Mark Kelly as well. Also in contention, according to the sources, our Governor's Andy Beshear of Kentucky, J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. So those are the names that are being bandied about to become Vice President Harris's running mate for the presidential election. Saw that Donald Trump held a rally in Georgia over the weekend, I guess they didn't let in as many people to the arena, where he was having a campaign stop as he had wanted, and there were many people outside in the very hot weather in Georgia. He wanted, made an appeal to the people who were in charge of security at the arena to let more in, but I don't believe they did. But I don't know, I think it seems to me anyway, and who am I to say, right? I've never run for President. But I think President Trump is making some very tactical mistakes, going after the ethnicity of Vice President Harris. I really do, I just think, and I think Lindsey Graham said this yesterday, the Senator from South Carolina, that Trump has to stick more to the issues. He's got to stick more to the issues, and not so much the personal attacks, if you will, on Vice President Harris. Because I think if he sticks to the issues, he's much better and more effective. But he always seems to, I've often said that Donald Trump's worst enemy. I mean, I know he has a lot of enemies, a lot of enemies, but his worst enemy is himself. That's his worst enemy. Because he meanders, he goes off on tangents. If he sticks to the issues, he would be much more effective, and I think would be able to win the race. But if you're gonna talk about ethnicity and her background and where she's from, talk about issues that she's been involved in in the past. Yes, that's fine, but her ethnicity, he went after Obama's ethnicity as well. I just don't think it's the right path to take. Stick to the issues, and I think his poll numbers would go up, but he can't help himself. Can't help himself. Goes on these tangents, and I don't think it's very effective. I mean, some people get a chuckle out of him, I know. And he's a great entertainer, but the point is to be president of the United States, not to be the entertainer in chief. It's the commander in chief, not the entertainer in chief. And he's got a good sense of you, a man he can be very funny, but those ethnic attacks just aren't good, no matter what setting it is. So he won't listen to me because he won't listen to anybody. Let alone some talk show host in Concord, New Hampshire. But at any rate, the campaign, it's what, 95 days now until election day, something like that. I think it's gonna seem like a whole lot longer, but at any rate, we will be here and cover it the best we can. For you, not only here on WKXL, but with our affiliation with Bloomberg Radio as well, it does such a great job. Today I saw an article by Eric Rinson-Lobell of the Concord Monitor. Unfortunately, our good friend Eric Rinson-Lobell is going to be leaving the Concord Monitor very soon. And he went to school at Northwestern University, one of the top colleges in the country. And he is going to be pursuing some work in the Chicago area. And that is where Northwestern is located. He's going to do some work affiliated with Northwestern University. And whatever he attacks, he will do it well. He will do it very well. He's been a great addition to our local sports media, and he will certainly be missed by many. And Concord Monitor has some tough shoes to fill in Eric Rinson-Lobell who's leaving soon to head back to the Wind City of Chicago. Are we going to take a break? John Leahy will join us and talk about his exploits over the weekend. And what's ahead this week for Mr. Leahy here in Concord? We'll take a break. Cale and Company continues right here, WKXL. NHChalkRadio.com we are presented by Northeast Delta Dental and we shall return. Cale and Company live here on WKXL. NHChalkRadio.com presented by Northeast Delta Dental. And join us this week, the return of our good friend, Renaissance man that he is. John Leahy, John, good morning to you. Yeah, good morning. It's a wonderful Monday morning. Hope all is well up here in the granite state. All is well here. We did have some pretty severe street flooding here yesterday. I don't know how it was on the Massachusetts Road Island border, but in Manchester they had some pretty severe street flooding here yesterday. Wow, hope all is safe. That's never fun. No, it is not, but John Leahy, I know you had a busy weekend. Yes, indeed. The book tour continued and resumed as a matter of fact. We started up the second half of the summer bookstore and had a chance to visit the West Hartford, Connecticut and a wonderful experience down there. Hartford, of course, being the great hockey town and baseball town that it is. They made me feel quite welcome and it was a terrific time down in the West Hartford and I enjoyed it immensely. Well, terrific. And, of course, everyone down there still misses the whalers. You know, you see no matter what hockey game you go to, John, almost every level that I've attended, you always see something, whether it be a Hartford Whalers cap, a jacket, a t-shirt. You inevitably see some Hartford Whalers memorabilia. Yes, you do. And the Hartford community is still pining for the whalers to come back. They just had an event the week prior to last where the Hartford yard goats had a Hartford Whaler remembrance event. Yeah. Former Whaler broadcaster Chuck Keaton was there. Oh, yeah. They bring him back, you know, yearly to help celebrate the history of the whalers. And I looked at the sports section of the Barnes & Noble there in West Hartford and they were a lot of Hartford Whaler books. So they really have a deep, deep commitment still to that hockey club. And I'd love to see them come back to be honest with you. Well, I think it would have to be as an expansion team. And, you know, obviously the Carolina Hurricanes aren't going to move back to Hartford. They've had great success where they are in Raleigh. But, you know, you would like to see another NHL team come back to Hartford. They still have an American hockey league team. But, you know, they supported the team for so many years and so well. But, at any rate, they are remembered fondly. And I will tell you, John Leahy, that the New Hampshire Mountain Kings of the North American Hockey League always play the brass bonanza after every goal. It's played at the Tri-Town Ice Arena in Hooksitt. So they remember the whalers. And we remember the whalers very well. But I'm glad you had a great time in West Hartford. Have you been to Dunkin' Donuts Stadium in Hartford? I have not. You know, I've driven by it several times. But never had the opportunity to go there to catch a game. But I know that the baseball is highly revered down there in Hartford as well. It's just such a great sports town. No, you're right. And I've never seen -- I've driven by many times myself. But I've never seen a game there. But from what I hear, from some reliable sources, that it is a nice, very nice facility. And it rivals what we have in Manchester at the Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. So, at any rate, some great minor league baseball in the area. We're glad to have it. And, of course, Worcester is a terrific place to watch a game at the AAA level as well. So we are blessed to have so many baseball options in the New England area. So, John, I know that you are going to be making an appearance in our area this week. Yeah, I'm very excited, Dan. I'm going to be up on Wednesday night at the Bank of New Hampshire stage. In Concord, it is a premier open mic venue. It is a wonderful, wonderful place. You know, it's got that old-time feel with a balcony up on top. And it's just so exciting to play there. And I'm excited to be there just coming Wednesday night. Always fun to make the trip up to New Hampshire to play some music. And give Andrew North and the Rangers a lot of credit. They have put together this open mic. And, John, you mentioned a premier open mic facility. You've told me more than once that when you've been on stage there, you feel like you're at the Grand Old Opry. Yeah, it's probably as close as I'll get to playing at the Grand Old Opry, but for a musician, it's great to be in a facility like that, especially when, you know, the crowd is packed. I'm expecting a great night on Wednesday and looking forward to seeing some great friends there as well. Absolutely. And maybe some new friends, too. You never know, John. And so you were kind enough to send a clip of a song and give people a little feel for what they might be hearing on Wednesday night. It all starts at seven, but, you know, get there early to get a good seat. All the seats are good, but you get an even better seat. Get a little table right in front of the stage. They have great beverages there and some food as well. So give us an idea, John. Tell us if the song we're about to hear. Well, the song I've met along was a song that was actually written by Ray Davies of the Kinks. He wrote it back in the '60s, and I was familiar with it by them a little bit, but, you know, being a big Jimmy Buffett fan as I am, I really learned the song. From Jimmy, he released the song on his album, Fruit Cakes. And, you know, Jimmy's version of course has that kind of caribbean tropical rock feel, but I went back and listened to the Kinks version, the original one, too, and that's very good. But the name of the song is called "funny afternoon," and I'm sure a lot of people from the '60s era and maybe going forward will be familiar with it. I remember it well from the Kinks. I didn't know Jimmy Buffett until you made me aware of that, had recorded it, but we will hear it right now. We'll see you later, ladies and gentlemen, right here on WKXL. I can't believe it, oh my God, it's making everything I've got, oh my God, it's a sunny afternoon. It's bubbly high, it's bubbly high. It's bubbly high, it's bubbly high.
