This is your morning routine, listen to speckable meat, Cap and G hoods, that's right, that's right, we're bad, watch the show on Twitch, follow ESPN 1000 Chicago, stream the show on the ESPN Chicago app and on in there, 100.3 HD2 and on ESPN 1000 Chicago, no, no, no, David Kaplan and Jonathan Hood. Good morning, everyone. This is Bayers victory Monday, Monday come. Well, there not a lot takes the snap against a four man rush. Great protection, Williams whistles a pass, it is caught and it should be enough for a first down across the 40 to the 41 yard line to DJ Moore. Camille Williams, that quarterback under center facing a front takes roll to the right, has to work through a progression there and throws it downfield and a dark catch, cold combat all the way to the 33 yard line, heck of a throw, Caleb in a tight pocket, scoots up in the pocket, keeps to the 30, left to the 25 to the 20 and a slide down inside the 20 yard line from that slip and slide action that have us all snap back, pressure coming, dumps it off, cuts with left 40, 45 50, left below 40 to the 30, cutting at the 20, the Bears will be in the red zone above below on a dump up pass. Under pressure, Caleb Williams dumps it off and it's a catch and run up 42 yards and the Bears first down. It's a Bears victory Monday on the Captain Jay Hood morning show on ESPN 1000 and we are streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Along with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you, we've got Shay, we've got Jay Moore, we've got you for a three hour ride here on this Bears victory Monday with open phone lines for you 312-332-ESPM-332776 is our telephone number. We want to see it, Cap. We want to see it and it happens Saturday. Bears, Bills, Caleb Williams gets a chance to start and we're able to consume what he was able to do. Pretty good kid. That's my stamp. Pretty good kid. Pretty good kid. Let me just say this right now and I'm speaking to all of you out there, some of whom have already said that's the guy right there. We've got a quarterback and those of you, it's a pretty cheesy game. Stop. I've heard this before. No, you haven't. You have never, ever, ever in your lifetime seen it like this. Did we like Justin? We did. Good athlete, good person, competed, played through injury. This, you upgraded. You upgraded from a Buick to what looks to be like a really cool Mercedes. Really cool. This kid showed you the ability on the little screen that he flipped across his body to DeAndre Swift, the throw to Cole Camette for 26 yards. Outstanding. The throw that DJ dropped later. Really, really good throw. But my favorite throw that I watched, third and 12, how many times have we seen the Chicago Bears in our lifetime? Third and 12 run like a six yard route and get tackled short of the sticks. That's just what they do. And this kid stepped in there, people flying all around him, stepped up and stepped into the throw. Not off his back foot. Boom, laser. Third down and long takes the snap against a four man rush. Great protection. Williams whistles a pass. It is caught and it should be enough for a first down across the 40 to the 41 yard line to DJ Moore. There you go. The first completion as a Chicago Bear, 13 yards and a first down. Great protection for Caleb and a nice tight spiral. No, no, you let it go throw it. Throw it. Hold on, Tom. Geez. Give me a chance. It's first game. You got PTSD himself. No, it was so great listening to Jeff and Tom and having them as our teammates and having this kid at quarter, it's just going to be so much fun because you hear the passion in their voice. Like when you watch the game on NFL Network, like if it's an item of mean, he's a Chicago guy, our guy. He is passionate as well, but I had the NFL Network on for a while. I'm like, very vanilla. Jeff and Tom. Oh man, they see what we all see. And even the cult members out there, I got a text from a couple of my buddies who are all field. I can't believe we're going to trade him and get this kid. I should read you. I will. I'll read you at some point. Some of the texts. Okay, I was wrong. A screed of people coming after you and coming after Bears fans are supporting Caleb Williams. I'll tell you what I like, Captain, again, it was a small sample size, as we well know, but I thought that the escape ability, the play action, the confidence, it all came from protection. I'm sure that there was a couple of plays in there in which Caleb Williams thought he was back in college because of the protection that was given to him by the offensive line. The offensive line every year is an issue or a question that we have every summer leading into the season. I thought for the most part, there was great protection for Caleb Williams. The other thing is to cap is that when you're Caleb Williams, you got to be able to take the wins at short past 15 yards. You're going to take the wins. Also, the double clutch, third and sixth, he tries to get it to Caleb. Caleb tries to get it to Roma Dunesay and there's a pass interference call. So again, it's not about 25 yards down the field. It's being able to check your progressions, take a look around quickly, get it out in two and a half seconds and be able to connect. I thought that there was patience there and some confidence from the limited time that we saw completely agree. Here's one of them that I got. Cap, I was wrong about taking a chance at the upgraded quarterback. In all seriousness, Caleb looked poised, not frozen by overthinking. His innate creativity in the passing phase of quarterbacking definitely is an enormous difference between him and Justin. You were right about going all in at Caleb, but you were totally wrong about Trubonski. Okay, that's one of like eight that I got from buddies of mine who are, oh my God, that kid looks way better than I ever thought he's going to look. So that was for my friend Glenn, but I have a bunch of them out there and so do you. That are looking going. You have room for me on the bandwagon? Guess what? As they said in Remember the Titans. Remember the scene when Ronnie Sunshine Bass shows up? We got ourselves a quarterback. Yeah, very, very cool that it's our quarterback. I just like that that there was patience by Caleb Williams there. The play action gives him so much time, Cap. We saw this several times where he gets the ball and there's a fake to the running back because the running game I think will be paramount again. As much as I want the offense to move vertically, it was good to see DeAndre Swift is good to be able to see not just DeAndre Swift, but also to be able to see Kelly Hill Herbert and Bayles Jones be able to get the football. The idea that the Bears can run the football or play action where Caleb can roll out to his left or right and connect to receivers, that's going to be key. Again, it's all growing pains. Here's when you get locked in when you watch the offense. There was a time cap. I'm watching this game live. I forgot it was pre-season because I'm looking for the offense to come out there again. Like, oh, that's right. Because I want it more. It gave me a taste. It was able to wet my beak a little bit. I'm watching. I'm like, oh, that's right. It's Beijing's time. I want it more. You forget because you say, okay, you got two field goals out of it. All right. Let's see if this can get a touchdown. Oh, that's right. He's done for the day. It was great. Even my wife, who's not the biggest football, like she loved watching our son when he played, but even my wife went, well, that kind of looks pretty good. And then during the game, I cut a YouTube short. We got a quarter, but she's like, there's 13 points. Relax. I get it. He only played a quarter. He's got more to do. But what a jumping off point. Like, we didn't go, well, it's only week one. I know he's struggled, but it's only. No. He got everybody excited. Yeah, because everyone just was wondering what this looks like. And again, hats off to the offensive line, though, Cap. The conversation coming into last week was, would there be enough healthy offensive linemen to protect Caleb Williams? Should he play? Should he not play based on the offensive line? And what we got from Ryan polls when we sat down with him last Tuesday was we'll have enough offensive linemen and healthy guys to give him the protection that he needs. And we'll put together an offensive line that you can work with. And they did. Yeah. Now again, that offensive line has got a ways to go. It's not there yet. They need to continue to stay healthy. They need to continue to work together. I still think they need to add next year to have nine picks, including their own first rounder. They need to address the offensive line. They've got to put serious capital, not a third round pick, not a fifth round. They need another Darnell right type pick. That's what they need. Another got a plug and play with perspective. With perspective, we have to say, when Ryan polls first got here, the offensive line was in shambles. Yes. And so slowly every year, Cap, he's trying to build toward being able to give something similar to an iron gate to be able to give Caleb Williams time to throw. So from where he was to where he is right now with this offensive line, it's getting better. If I get a bit of the pack offensive line, I'll take it because where it was, it was a zero. There was no time for Justin Fields. So with Caleb Williams, this is the diamond in the rough. This is the guy. Give him all the protection you can. This upcoming draft. Make sure you address that several times. It's good. You got a Bates here. You got a Coleman and Shelton there. Okay. But you want to be able to have someone that's could be an anchor for you for a decade. Completely agree. So it's fine. Darnell Wright should be a decade long starter at right tackle. Kevin, can you stay healthy, stay on the field? You'll get a contract extension and a juicy one at that. But again, to watch that game on Saturday, I've never been that excited about preseason football. Dude, I'm sitting there locked in on a beautiful day going, this is awesome. It's just a taste. It's just a taste. And just to circle back with the offensive line, let's put the facts out there, Cap. So over the last three seasons, Justin Fields was the most sack quarterback in the league with 135, followed by Russell Wilson at 133. But it's interesting about that. They're on the same team with the Steelers. But that's the reason why the offensive line is so such a big factor and a big storyline for this beer is team because protection is key. Um, Caleb Williams was at flashbacks thinking about, Hey, I got all this time in the world. Kid, you're not going to have all the time in the world. Like against the Bill's ones is pretty good in preseason. When the bell rings, there's already guys from the Titans already talking smack about this first game. They want your head. They want your head Simmons. They want him and he's a hell of a player. So like, keep in mind him rolling out left and right was good, be able to survey the scene and be able to make some of the right throws and plays. Again, hats off to them. Pretty good. Pretty good kid. Now let's take the next step and play well against the Bengals. You're going to have a joint practice. So he's going to get a lot of work. Let's continue to develop our guy. All right. So if you're on hold, you will be on the air on some open full lines for you as well. Shay three one two three three two ESPN three three two three seven seven six our phone number. Let's get your thoughts about the bears. Did you watch the game? Just listen to it right here on the home of the bears ESPN 1000. Check in as the bears win 33 six in the second preseason game. What do you think of Caleb Williams and the bears? What stood out most to you? We'll take your phone calls and hear from Caleb Williams. That's next on the cap and jayhood morning show. This is Romo Junze. It's the Andre Swift. This is Caligorda. You're listening to cap and jayhood on ESPN Chicago, the new home of the Chicago Bears. Captain Jayhood weekday morning seven to 10 here on the ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Here's hoping that you're going to have a great Monday and a great week as we keep your company here on a bears victory Monday. The bears defeat the bills 33 to six. You can hear every game right here. I'm a home of the bears ESPN 1000. Of course the ESPN Chicago app as well. So what stood out to me is that Caleb Williams was not overwhelmed. He was a guy that was pretty easy in the pocket, made that flip play to the Andre Swift. I thought that he was steady, but again, we got put in perspective. You and I both know it's preseason. It's just a little taste. He'll get more time. I'm sure in this upcoming matchup on Saturday and maybe a little bit more against Kansas City. We'll see. But the point is though is that he is getting ready. Look, I saw some preseason football over the weekend where he had starters and some of the backups that were just completely just trash. Just not good. Offense of wine wasn't good. The timing wasn't good. That wasn't Shane Bushel out there. That was Caleb Williams and Caleb Williams, the quarterback for the Chicago Bears had a chance to talk about his feelings after that first game against the bills on Saturday. So good. There's always, you know, there's always a little bit, you know, of a more focus that you have going to games for whatever reason, even if you try and enter and enter that mindset and things like that throughout the weeks. It's just a, you know, a sense of control, I guess, a sense of progress, a sense of, you know, a bunch of different things that when you get into games, you know, the comfort level and all of that, you know, normally skyrockets. Yeah. Just like John Legend, take it slow. Like we saw that first installment of hard knocks cap is he just got to take it slow. And then when you watch Caleb Williams, again, just incrementally, he'll get more and more comfortable. And then we'll see what happens when the bell rings against the Titans. I think it's really cool that they're going to have the joint practice against the Bengals. Again, it's not a regular season game. I know they have a preseason game, but it's still work against other players on other teams, all trying to make a roster. So they're all going to give their very best. And I think it's really good for Caleb to see different looks and different people. Now he'll run out on the on the field from the tunnel at Soldier Field. I don't know if he'll play against Kansas City. Let's see how this week goes. But what we watched, if you're a Bears fan, you cannot tell me that you didn't look at that game and go, Oh, I haven't seen anything like this in a Bears uniform. We have it. We have not. We will go back though, three summers ago, when we were talking about Justin Fields, how all of us were excited about what Justin Fields could bring to the table. If you remember, Cap, that preseason game was his Miami Dolphins. And it was Andy Dalton versus Justin Fields. Justin gets out there and it took him a while to get hot, but he finished 14 for 20 good for 102 yards and a touchdown ran the football five times, good for 33 yards and a touchdown and a comfort behind victory. He also had two phone balls in that game. But the point is, though, is that for young quarterbacks, it just got to get acclimated and get comfortable. They had to get comfortable. And so for Caleb Williams, we saw what we saw against Buffalo now against the Bengals at home. And I hope that he feels as comfortable or maybe more comfortable against the Bengals defense. I'm excited also to see how the defense fares against a guy like Joe Burrell. Again, Joe's not going to play a ton, but I would think you'll see him get some significant playing time. And that will be an interesting thing as well. Austin Booker looked amazing. Some of the guys he went up against are going to be working non football related jobs in two weeks asking you for change outside of McDonald's with a squeegee. Well, maybe they're an accountant. I don't know. I think you get your change a little bit quicker though. It's tax free outside with the squeegee. It is. But you could still watch the game. And I went back and watched it multiple times. His get off is really good off the line. Really good. His motor, where he had one, where he beat his guy, and then he gets ridden past the quarterback. Quarterback steps up. He loops back around and makes the sack. It was outstanding. And another one where he joined in with Daniel Hardy. Yes. And it was just super cool to see him play through the whistle. Yeah, excited to see where this goes. I want to ask you some other things about the defense as well. Again, the Bears win 33 to six against the Bills in the second preseason game. If you get chance to watch that game, let's do it right here on ESPN 1000. Jump in with those three one, two, three, three, two, three, seven, seven, six is our phone number. And Lyle, here's Lewis. He's with us here on Cap and Jay Hood. Lewis, good morning. Hey, good morning, guys. You know, I got to say, I've seen a lot. I've been cautiously optimistic. This is the first time I'm not. I told you that a couple of weeks ago. Honestly, I think something that's emblematic of what we're going to get to see out of him and granted the screen pass, but that screen to DeAndre Swift yet what I can't remember who was in his face, hand in his face. Start up and look at Swift knew exactly where he was and was just able to get it to him from a huge gain. I mean, Justin Fields, he's going to make him that throw. He's getting sacked. It's a huge difference, a huge upgrade. But that's one thing. The main reason that I called is I made a promise to you guys two weeks ago. And you know, buddy on the north side, I'm going to laugh the same one on the left when Caleb made that pass on the screen. I hope that you get to see this and I cannot wait to laugh more and more as this season goes on. All right, Lewis, that's the ultimate. Take that to Eddie from the north side. Take that, Eddie. Damn. Eddie's in his truck right now going, oh, God, I look like a moron for what I said. Hey, man, listen, you fan. Now you want a fan, Eddie. You have your own opinion. That's fine. More times than not and Eddie from the north side type is right. More times than not. Take a look at the scoreboard cap over the last 20, 30 years. More times than not at Eddie from the north side type is correct. However, we're hoping that this bears team can change the narrative. Right? Yes. Okay, that's all it's just to watch that game. It's super exciting to see where could could be had. Once at a step of a time for Caleb Williams and the Bears offense, I mean, you have to understand where we are and understand, you know, what we have and where we're headed. That's the most important thing, but you also have to be where your feet are. So when you're out there in the field, when we're preparing for this game, you're enjoying it, you're having fun, you're having a blast. You know, we take a step back when we get into tomorrow or early tomorrow, you know, we take a step back, we go through the tape and then onto the next pre-season and then, you know, from there, you take it from there and then you keep growing, you keep growing, you keep growing. And then we just, you know, keep counting those days, counting those hours and getting after it. We have to know the names, Cap. We have to know between now and the start of the regular season, who will be the stalwarts at offensive line for the Chicago Bears? Like, who's going to wind up playing center? Can I just say with perspective, you should know at this point in time, if you're trying to go for it, meaning trying to get to the playoffs, who your center is, you know how strong that center position is for a, as an anchor for a young quarterback. The idea that at this time, we still don't know if it's Coleman Shelton or if it's Ryan Bates. I like to have that solved sooner than later. That's important because of the rhythm for Caleb Williams to know who he's working with. Well, if Nate Davis was in there, and now it sounds like he's a week to week injury, sounds like might be a groin injury. If Nate Davis was starting at right guard, would Ryan Bates be the starting center? Would Coleman Shelton be the starting center? It's a good question. I don't know. I don't know. I also like to know if Nate Davis is long for this team or not, you got to be able to know that right guard, I know it's a guard who, it matters. The protection matters, whoever it is. Is it going to be, is it how durable will Tim and Jenkins and Nate Davis be? Now, again, with Tim and Jenkins, it's something we talked about a lot on the show. Like when he's healthy, he's outstanding. So like what Tom Thibodeau said about Derek Rose, you know, when he's healthy, he's unbelievable. Right. When he's not, he's not. Like what was Belichick's big line? Availability is one of the greatest abilities to have. Are you out there? Don't tell me how good you are. Can you play? Are you playing? And we'll see. Kevin Jenkins is wonderfully talented. He's got to be able to stay on the field. This is all just the puzzle pieces that have to come together. Four Caleb Williams and the Bears. 312323276 is our telephone number. We go to Rich in Tampa, Florida listening on the SP in Chicago app. Rich. Good morning. Hey, how you guys doing today? What's going on, man? How are you? You know, I were doing it's a Bears Victory Monday area. I was going today just for a couple of things real quick. It's first time caller. I don't know if you guys remember that was a show years ago called the monsters. Yes. Yeah, you guys remind me of every type of format. I really, I really enjoy it. Appreciate it. That is that is a huge compliment. Huge to to to consider us chickens in North because they were Hall of Famers. There's no question about it. My pleasure. The only thing too, I've watched that game. I'm a huge bass fan and Cubs fan. But I just wanted to say with the hype for Caleb, I'm in on it. But it kind of reminds me of the Dr. Pepper commercial during college games where they go, oh my God, I can't believe it. And you know, they're burning the jerseys and I can't believe I fell for the hype. You know, I'm going to guys like it's only the first play of the game. Right. That's the college football fan for you. That's for sure. I was just, you know, with the hype. I'm just, you know, I'm in on it. I'm a pole believer of Caleb, but he's just with the hype. It's like, you know, Caleb Williams, he's going to be the MVP, he's going to win eight Super Bowls. But then it's like, wait a minute, he's only play two series in the first preseason game. That's right. That's right. And for me, Rich, and we appreciate the telephone call, it's all about perspective. We're all excited about what the Bears could be. It's the Bears are more than Caleb Williams. I say that because while Justin feels as the quarterback, everyone was focused on Justin thinking that Justin is the Chicago Bears. It's not. There's a rich tradition of the Chicago Bears that's beyond Justin Fields. Well, Caleb Williams, as Cap says, he's chasing greatness, but it's not just him, the Bears are chasing greatness. The general manager says, I want to be able to capture the North and never give it back. It's just about legacy, not just for Caleb, it's for everybody. To take it to the next step, to be able to win the division, to see a Super Bowl, there's so many young people around us, Cap, that have no idea the feeling of the city when the Bears won the Super Bowl, have no idea, no clue, no documentary, and no podcast could give you the real feeling that it was when the Chicago Bears are winners. It was insane, insane. It was electric and to see how pathetic that we've been for so long. And now, all of a sudden, to look at our team and go, still a work in progress, still a ways to go. But guess what? Trending in a very positive direction. 312332 ESPN3323776 is our phone number coming up. We hear from Matti Reflous, the head coach for the Chicago Bears, and take more of your phone calls. It's a Bears Victory Monday, on The Cap and Jay Hood Morning Show. Good morning, and welcome in to The Cap and Jay Hood Morning Show on ESPN 1000. And we are streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you, on a Bears Victory Monday. Time for shot and no shot. Here's Shane Orland. Good morning, boys, on a Victory Monday. How we feeling? Feeling great. We're good, man. We've got a quarterback in this town. And his name is Caleb Williams. We've always had a quarterback in this town. I mean, no, we never had a quarterback until now. We had somebody play the position as an imposter. I see. Compared to what we've got now, just keep the kid up right now. You shout out to Jim McMahon. I would just say that I would just say, Cap, that this is a great start. You know, again, he wasn't a quarterback that was like, Oh my God, and just it was too big for the moment. I mean, Shane, it wasn't Stetson Stetson Bennett out there. The Georgia quarterback. Four interceptions. But hoodie, don't worry, Stetson Bennett overcame four interceptions with a game-winning touchdown. Four picks has to be a preseason record, right? That can have possibly happened before. Four picks. Go, dogs. How is McVey not just like we're going to put in a linebacker and a quarterback just hand the ball off? Like we got to get you out. It's so much better. That was so bad. But listen, I'm excited about the future, the present and the future. As Michael Jordan would tell you, the ceiling is the roof. That's it. Here it is. Shane Orling, Shane. All right, well, I had a whole thing written out for shot or no shot. I had a lot of great stuff to get to, but it's blown up now because Dan Levittard showed decided to put out a Twitter poll that shows just how much national media is losing cabin pressure over four of seven from Caleb Williams. Ready for this? Sure. Hashtag poll is Caleb Williams already a top five quarterback in bears history. Shot or no shot. It's a it's a no shot. Who put this out? Dan Levittard show. Yeah. Top five quarterback and bear's history. Well, there's Lockman. McMan led you to Super Bowl. He's got to be there. Yeah, shot. Wow. Yeah, I'd like to see him on the field first in a regular season game before I say that. So it's a it's a no shot, obviously. And I think that question more than likely is tongue and cheek. And by the way, the whole thing is like he's a number one pick in the draft. So of course, he's going to get a lot of attention, but it's a different type of attention cap. It's not let's see what he's going to do. It's wow. Look at Caleb Williams and this new look bears team. Yeah, it's the whole thing. The whole pack. It's a whole operation. But yeah, I I'm good with that. I'm good with that. And I'm also good with my 4,000 yard projection. Stay healthy. It's coming. Yep. Anything less than that, your failure, kid, just so you know, never said that. No, I never said it. I said it. For clarification on this too, like fifth best quarterback and bear's history would be like backup quarterback, right? Like just if you're going relative to the rest of the league. Yeah. What do you have after Lockman Cutler and Kramer Kramer and Miller luck. Like Jim McMahon led you to the super ball. So there's your is that your five? Lockman. Jay. Bookman. Jim McMahon. Yeah. Jay. Just say it. Jay. You have to say Jay. The night you have to do Miller Miller Miller. Just because he was a bully poll, you still have to admit who wait. Who did you Jim Miller and Eric Miller's not in the top five? Yes. No shot. Caleb already better than Jim Miller. That's simple and breaking news. Yeah, that's a shot. Yes. Miller's not in the top five. It's it's Lockman McMahon. Cutler. Yeah. Who else? I just I gave you my five. Wait, you said Jim Miller? Who was the other one you said? Eric Kramer. Yeah. Kramer has the passing record. So I guess you'd stick him in there. I would not put Jim Miller there. I'd put Caleb there. Okay. I liked it. Never mind about the facts. Let's just put the kid in there before he even plays the regular season game or Jim Miller. This guy hasn't taken a snap in the regular season already better than Jim Miller. Color analysts during the preseason, by the way, you can catch Jim and Adam and me on the TV side. Here's Shane Olin. Jim Miller only threw for 2,000 yards one time. Yeah. That was a hell of a year. Passer rating of 74.9. Yeah. Now I'm good with my pick. Yep. He takes he takes zero versus what Jim Miller brought to the table for the bear. Here's Shane Olin. Wow. All right. A lot of a lot of talk before the preseason game on Saturday, the offensive struggles at camp. Everybody said it was a slog, a lot of interceptions, a lot of rough procedural stuff going on. Fall starts, bad snaps, all of it. Big slog for the offensive camp. Then Saturday happens and the bears get about 8 yards of play in Caleb's snaps against Buffalo. The offense looked good. The operation was clean. Caleb looked the part. So shot or no shot. The struggles for the offense at training camp say more about the bears defense than it does the offense. Hmm. It says more about the defense than the offense. Well, the defense as shade just laid out has had the lion's share of the good moments this past camp this past week. Well, I think the defense is pretty much set, right? I like what I see there. We saw was we still talk about the defensive line cap trying to get more of a pass rush, but secondary solid, linebackers are solid. Correct. So what would you say? I could understand where that defense that he's going up against every day is making life rough on him because it's an elite defense. Yeah, it is. It could be an elite secondary, not an elite defense. Now, we know elite when we see a cap. That's not, that's not do that. It's not an elite defense. I think the secondary can be elite. That's fair. You like Jalen Johnson, right? Love. You like what they have in their secondary. Bless with good health, they should be able to shut down many teams. You mentioned to me earlier this summer about how Jalen Johnson might be the most important bear on the team one, but two, there's going to be teams that don't want to throw on his side. You talked to, we talked about this. We did. Okay. So linebackers had no problem with the linebackers, what they have, but the defensive line still needs to be able to have more of a push. We saw it toward the end of last season. Can they replicate that or do more this season with what they have? I don't know that. So before we go there, let's take a look. Yeah, I like, I like their linebackers. Their defensive backfield is loaded. Sure. Got, it's got more depth right in any position in on the team. Maybe the wide receiver room is right there with it because they got three studs up front. But as I look at this team, Caleb's clearly the most important player. But if you leave the quarterback to the side, Jalen Johnson's ability to shut down top receivers is a massive part of this team. So Shane, if I said that says a lot about where the defense is, that would be a shot, correct? Yeah, I would, I would say so. Well, like we've talked about this the entire time, Shane, we've talked about how the defense is still the strength of the team. And so for Caleb Williams had to deal with whether or not Jalen Johnson is going to pick them off or not or Kevin Bayard, the veteran free safety. I mean, that is got to be difficult. He doesn't get knocked to the ground, but he picked off by Terry Stevenson when he gets healthy, healthier, Kyler Gordon, he had veterans back there. You do, you got a really deep, good group, good linebackers that can run. I'm good, man. Strowman, Jalen Jones. It's pretty, pretty strong. So let's just see about the rest of it though, the line. That's the question mark on the team for me. Okay. And Daniel Hardy. Oh, Daniel Hardy. Pretty good. Great jewelry. I love that. The main team. Well, who do you brought up the line? Austin Booker continues to impress. Looks like a difference making past Russia in the preseason. The reports out of camp have all been glowing. I read Brad Biggs this morning. If you mentioned his name to an assistant coach at camp, they immediately smile. Just in hearing the name Austin Booker had a highlight reel on Saturday constant. I mean, every snap, he was moving the left tackle backwards, got two and a half sacks to go along with it. He's a pest in the backfield so far shot or no shot. I was right about Austin Booker. Would you like to answer on behalf of your radio, son? Yeah, first take, Shay, we've played. And again, Austin Booker was a fifth round pick, not the number one overall pick like our quarterback who's been called generational. Let's just let this play out because Shay's too young to remember Mark Anderson, 10 sacks of rookie and everyone went. Whoa, monster. That guy's a monster. I don't think he got 10 the rest of his career. Yeah. So yeah, no shot. Yeah, it's a no shot. Can we see in the regular season and how does he get into the rotation in the regular season? Big question. As we said in our number one cap, it is about if you're going to go to to the regular season with what you have on the depth chart and you're going to rotate in Robinson and Booker and they can make, you know, try to get to the quarterback and pay dividends for you. That's a positive. That's for sure. So far so good here in the preseason for Booker does again, not overwhelmed at all. Like what I saw against Houston, even better against Buffalo on Saturday. Shay Norley. Cody, maybe this is a better shot or no shot. He's making a case to start on the defensive line. Uh, can he play nose tackle? No, he's an edge rusher. He is making a case to be the edge rusher opposite of Montez. What? That's a no shot. Marcus Walker is a guy. Yep. And again, as a rookie, I don't need to see it yesterday. You like the Marcus Walker the day we signed him. Yeah. So again, Austin Booker has an opportunity to be able to be a rotation guy on one of the ends. Doesn't have to be yesterday. Then that'd be today. But this season, I look forward to him being able to pay some dividends for the defense because they need everybody. It's not a dominant defensive line yet. Hopefully Booker can help. That's what we call perspective. That's because it's a rookie. Correct. After two preseason games. Correct. We got a diamond and a rough in the fifth round with Braxton Jones. Hopefully, that would be the case with Austin Booker. That's the hope. Shay Norley. All right. When I asked about Vailas Jones, getting some work at running back in the Bears game against Buffalo. That switch now seems official. Matt Eberflu said they're going to continue to evaluate it week to week, but he is a running back now. Vailas got six carries for 34 yards and a touchdown. Again, this is the cordyral Patterson flip where you can't run routes. You stink as a receiver, but you're pretty effective with the ball in your hand. We just have to get it to you. Shot or no shot. Vailas Jones at running back makes it more likely Khalil Herbert will be traded. Shot. If they can get draft capital for Khalil Herbert, shot. Shot. I saw him out there, Jones. You look good. Now, touchdown run around the left edge. That's pretty good speed, man. Turn that quarter, boom, into the end zone. Nice. Folks, let me explain to you what's happening here. Okay. Folks, at the dinner table, sitting down, trying to figure out how to be able to put the bills together, trying to figure out what are you going to do for the week? Folks, let me just tell you about this Vailas Jones. This is a general manager that is making sure that he's right about a player. Cap, we've seen Vailas Jones be substandard so far as a Chicago bear. Is that a fair word to use? Substandard. Subpar would be better, but I can co-sign you. Well, what's your standard? My standard is for him to be able to utilize that speed and get up the field. That's my standard. This is a general manager doesn't want to be wrong about this third round pick. God bless him. He shouldn't want to be wrong if he saw something and he's like, before we let this guy go, we better try everything and make sure because I don't want to see him, someone else's uniform going, why didn't we do that? Vailas, this whole thing of the running back style working, can you backpedal? We need an extra corner. He's just going to have them all over the field just to keep them on the roster. He doesn't want to be wrong about him, Cap. I just hope that he can help the bears. If that's the amount of play shape they have for him, hopefully this will work. So I would say that that is a shot. If it works out with Vailas Jones with this running back play, Khalil Herbert would be expendable on the roster. I would agree with you, but it's got to work, Gil Cap. Is he not a special teams guy? He's not a wide receiver, but he's going to be in these Patterson plays. Don't let that be the reason why the bears lose because he gets soft hands or something. Don't let it, I will hit the roof because I didn't like the pick at the time as you will know. You did not. So okay, you know he's fast and you're just trying to utilize him the best you can. Hopefully it works. They asked him, Larry Mayer, our guy from bears.coco bears.com. Great dude. He said, God bless me with speed, size and physicality. So why not? Jones said the Chicago Bears.com reported Larry Mayer. Anything to help this team out and crease of value. Okay, let's go. Let's go then. Let's go mate. All right. She's got around the NFL. And don't forget Jesse Rogers, the latest on the Cubs and the White Sox and everything else. MLB at 835. What are you waving me off for? She go ahead and tell Jesse today. Jesse is on an ATV in Northern Wisconsin. Okay. Jesse's on vacay. Okay. Much deserved. But I'll be more than ready for you because three games back here they come. So at 835 Cubs colon, real hope or false hope, we'll break that down coming up at 835. Captain Jay Hood, weekday morning, 7 to 10. Welcome back. Welcome back to Captain Jay Hood on Chicago's on for sports. ESPN Chicago hit both socks. These socks. I'm just a fan. I'm not a football about it. I love the Green Bay Packers. The guy is from but there we go. This is not Detroit man. This is the Super Bowl. I love winter. He starts the comedy. This is a really thickly built guy. I mean, what's the time? So you're looking for all these things here. It's not time to go around the NFL right here on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the SB in Chicago app. We'll have green at 10 followed by black and a dollar in for Carmine Yerko at 12. Waddell and Sylvian to White Sox baseball at 630. Around the NFL. Here's Shane Orling. Alright, Rudy, pre-show you asked me if I had a theme or if it was just the kind of reaction to some of the stuff we saw over the weekend. Yes, sir. I didn't have a theme. And then of course, as I'm organizing my thoughts, a theme jumps out to me. Okay, so today is going to be the don't be surprised if X happens based on what we saw over the weekend. The list? It's not a list. It's a collection of items. Okay, got it. So starting with this, do not be surprised if Bonix is the second best quarterback out of this draft in year one. I'm not saying he's going to be the second best quarterback out of this draft for all time. But year one, we're looking at a guy who was excellent for the Broncos in the preseason opener led five drives. They scored on four of them. He was efficient just based on the sheer volume of football that has been played. This guy set a record in college. More college football starts than any other quarterback. I believe in history. He was great at Oregon. He's learned the game. Now he's in Denver with Sean Payton. Year one just kind of feels like he's going to have a lot of opportunity second to Caleb Williams and Jaden Daniels. And he feels more polished than Jaden Daniels right now. Year one only. I think Bonix could jump off the page a little bit. What do you think of that? I mean, Bonix is about as 34. He's married, got four kids in a mortgage. So Bonix probably had a lot of the young quarterbacks. Yeah, I saw his grandson on the game. 3430 victory for the Broncos over the cold. Yeah, I'm not going to cosign that he'll be what what was your term? The second best year one rookie year one rookie. I'm not going to cosign that as but as Shane eloquently laid out all the experience of Bonix at in college like he sets them up perfectly. He's 24. No not. And he's got a great quarterback tutor in Sean Payton. Why don't we do that in college football, Shay, into the NFL? But we don't do that in college basketball. Like if you're if you're over 20, you're washed 21 for your guy. A buddy of mine said to me, why do we trick Williams? He's old. He's been around from like old. He's 22. He is. Yeah. Yeah, college basketball's different, man. If you're a four year college basketball player, you're probably not an NBA player unless you're like Zach Edie. Shot to Denzel Valentine. Or ten years. Shay Norley. Well, you know, Bonix, I saw he goes to sideline. Most guys get Gatorade. He's got his little vitamin thing. The case Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. He just pops that open. That's so bad. Depending on the day of the week. Brandon IU, if the news keeps getting stranger and stranger, don't be surprised to Brandon IU because just a 49er this season. Oh, it sounds like they're back negotiating hard and they're going to get something done. This whole power play ended up working for him. It's one thing to demand a trade because you want money. It is a totally different thing to then veto two trades that would have made you among the highest paid player wide receivers in the NFL. He never wanted to leave. He just wanted to be paid in San Francisco. And that's not happening. You know, they'll pay them. I mean, they're back negotiating. You don't go back to the table if you don't want to get something done. Well, Cap, every organization's not like the Chicago Bears. They take care of their players, you know. Just wait till they start winning and every guy's at the window. Yeah, where's mine? No. Hey, not every team has the class of the Chicago Bears in care of DJ Moore on the first episode of Hard Knocks while he's standing there in practice. Hey, go back down there. You sign everything's good. All right, you can go back down there. And then who's the first guy they show him talking to? Where you go? It was Nate Davis. He's like, I just signed it. What? That's crazy. That was awesome. He goes one less thing I have to worry about. I watched the episode again. My wife's like, can we watch this Hard Knocks? I want to see this. All of a sudden, when's the second one? Oh, now you're coming around, huh? Because it's more than just the, you know, the meat and potatoes that we talk about every day. It's the stories. It is. It's the connection of the stories. That's why Peacock was watching the first one with me. She said, what time's it on? I'll close the laptop at eight. We'll watch. Oh, okay. I'm going to watch. Yeah. I'm going to get out of that room and actually watch. Pretty good, kid. Here's Shane Norley. On the topic of the 49ers. Again, I'm not making a prediction, but I'm starting to get a little nervous. Don't be surprised if this 49ers season ends up being a disappointment. I am past the point of curious if they're going to remain dominant and at the point of genuine concern. They canceled their joint practices with the Saints this week. I know most people are like, Oh, who cares? I heard Dan Campbell last week said that the players get more work done in the joint practices than they do in the preseason games. They find these to be more valuable. Why did the Niners cancel their joint practice with the Saints? They had 23 players missing from their most recent practice for various reasons. Shanahan got on the phone with Dennis Allen said he doesn't think he will have the players available to hold a joint practice. Their injury concerns are bad. They have off field stuff with IU, can Trent Williams. I'm starting to get genuinely concerned that this thing could go south. Can they also cancel their game on the 8th against the Saints? Sorry, we don't have enough players. Let's just shut this down on Fox. No, test pattern. The league would say absolutely not. Cause I say no practice, but at some point you got to feel the team. Got to feel the team. When you're down 23 guys and you're the Niners who have invested so much in their first team that their depth is abysmal, you can't afford to lose any of it. So you're down 23. You can't take on the physicality of a joint practice. If somebody gets hurt, you're really in trouble. Watch your wide receiver cap. They're number one pick. Ricky Pearsaw. Pearsaw, watch him. Watch him now, Harry. Pearsaw is going to be out there. Why is he from Florida? Watch him now. Jimmy's grandson. Probably so. The Niners, do they have Trent Williams, is he not in camp? Is he going? Is he a hold in or a hold out? Double check. I think it was a hold out, but I'm going to double check it. Why do you have you asked? Because everybody I've asked. I was asking Big Cat Williams the other day. He said, I don't care how veteran you are. You need your reps in training camp to get yourself as the good kid says. You got to get in football shape. You can come in and the best cardio and strong in the gym. You got to beat your body broken down to build it back up for football. Big Cat said the same exact thing. If you're an offensive lineman and you're sitting out, you are not going to be ready to play football week after week. Not. Yeah, Trent Williams is a hold out. Shay, I would like for you to bookmark a question for us late August or early September. Based on what you told us about the point and how you feel about the 49ers today, it might that probably will change in a couple of weeks because they'll get healthier. But the question I'd like for you to ask in shot or no shot or around the NFL is whether or not the 49ers championship window has closed, not closing has closed. Let's take a look at what that looks like. Let's take a look and they have to pay Brock Purdy coming up next year and Bill Barnwell says 65 million dollars because it I think they'd let him walk at that price. I do too. The narrative is that well it's Shanahan so it'll always be open. That's not the case for everybody. That's not true. Like all the glitters is not gold cap. Like I look at the 49ers like good coach, good weapons, who doesn't like McCaffrey who doesn't like their defense, but doesn't mean they're championship material. We'll see. Right. You got the iYuke situation, the Trent Williams situation. You got all these other guys banged up injured. Yeah, let's take a look. 100% but 65 million for Brock Purdy. No shot. Yeah, that Trent Williams situation too like you talked about not being ready. There is the like the reason he's holding out is not because he doesn't have a contract. He signed for I think three more seasons. The problem is none of the money in any of the seasons is guaranteed. So if he goes out and camp and sustains an injury, Niners can wash their hands of him and he gets nothing and he's at an age where sorry you're just not going to pick that up on the free agent market off of an injury. Can you sneak in one more before we talk Cubs? Yeah, because look we talked last week on Friday about the Russell Wilson Justin Fields battle and my feeling at the time in that locker room the way we were hearing things out of Pittsburgh, Justin Fields had a genuine opportunity to win that battle. I don't be surprised if there's just isn't a battle. It was more of the same from Justin Fields on Friday night against Houston. It was five to six for 67 yards. The passes he got off looked okay. But fumbled two snaps, two snaps fumbled and had to recover them and got sacked twice. It's just he's the same guy he's always been. It doesn't look like there was any growth or any change from what he was at the end here. And Russell Wilson probably will be their starter. Yeah, you know what, Cap, this wouldn't happen if sales wouldn't have fumbled the ball on our idea to broadcast a couple of shows from La Trobe to get fields ready for the season. Right. He would have sat down with us. That's right. Got him ready. Like, look, man, we need you to be 51% of these snaps. We need you to be able to take this tick the bull by the horn. We need the fourth round pick. Let's go. It would have been nice. First question would have been, why are you out on me in November or wanting Caleb Williams? Because you're not very good. You weren't good. But now we've turned the page. That's what would happen. We just want the fourth round pick. So that's that's what it would be. We would be there to encourage him. We're live with Mike Tomlin. That's what would have happened. Like right there at La Trobe. I love Mike Tomlin. But sales dropped the ball on that. We should have been you and I to encourage fields. Oh, that would have been great. That would have been awesome. You know you're the starter, right? You know you're the starter. That's what would have happened. It all sucks. All right, Shay, we're going to talk cubs. Real hope or false hope. Still alive. Three back. Or we come or Ryan's hope. We'll talk about it coming up next on the Captain Jhood Morning Show.
