This is your morning routine, listen to respect, meet Cap and G hoods. That's right, that's right, we're bad, uh-uh. Watch the show on Twitch, follow ESPN1000Chicago, stream the show on the ESPN Chicago app, and on in there, 100.3 HD2, and on ESPN1000Chicago, no, no, no, no. David Kaplan and Jonathan Hood. Good morning, everyone. This is Bales Victory Monday, Monday, Monday. Well, Third Out of All takes the snap against a four-man rush, great protection. Williams whistles a pass, it is caught, and it should be enough for a burst out across the 40 to the 41-yard line to DJ Moore. Peter Williams, that quarterback, under center facing a front, takes a roll to the right, has to work through a progression there, throws it down field, and a dark catch. Colkomat all the way to the 33-yard line, heck of a throw, Caleb in a tight pocket, scoots up in the pocket, keeps to the 30, left to the 25 to the 20, and a slide down inside the 20-yard line from that slip-and-slide action at Hallis Hall. Snap back, pressure, coming, dumps it off, cuts with, left 40, 45-50, left to the 30, cutting it to 20, the Bears will be in the red zone above, though, on a dump-off pass, under pressure, Caleb Williams dumps it off, and it's a catch and run of 42 yards and the Bears first down. It's a Bears Victory Monday on the Captain Jay Hood Morning Show on ESPN 1000, and we are streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Along with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you, we've got Shea, we've got Jay Moore, we've got you for a 3-yard ride here on this Bears Victory Monday with open phone lines for you, 3-1-2, 3-3-2 ESPN, 3-3-2-3-7-7-6, here's our telephone number. We want to see it, Cap, we want to see it, and it happens Saturday, Bears, Bills, Caleb Williams gets a chance to start, and we're able to consume what he was able to do. Pretty good, Kid, that's my stamp, pretty good, Kid. Pretty good, Kid, let me just say this right now, and I'm speaking to all of you out there, some of whom have already said that's the guy right there. We've got a quarterback, and those of you, it's a pretty cheesy game, stop, I've heard this before. No, you haven't. You have never, ever, ever in your lifetime seen it like this. Did we like Justin? We did. Good athlete, good person, competed, played through injury. Yes, you upgraded, you upgraded from a Buick to what looks to be like a really cool Mercedes. Really cool. This Kid showed you the ability on the little screen that he flipped across his body to DeAndre Swift, the throw to Cole Comette for 26 yards, outstanding. The throw that DJ dropped later, really, really good throw. But my favorite throw that I watched, third and twelve, how many times have we seen the Chicago Bears in our lifetime, third and twelve run like a six yard route and get tackled short of the sticks? That's just what they do, and this Kid stepped in there, people flying all around him, stepped up and stepped into the throw, not off his back foot, boom, laser. Third down and long takes the snap against a four man rush. Great protection, Williams whistles it past, it is caught and it should be enough for a first down across the 40 to the 41 yard line to DJ Moore. There you go, the first completion as a Chicago Bear, 13 yards and a first down, great protection for Caleb and a nice tight spiral. Throw it! Oh no, he let it go throw it, hold on Tom, geez, give me a chance, it's the first game. You've got PTSD himself, no color. It was so great listening to Jeff and Tom and having them as our teammates and having this kid at quarter, it's just going to be so much fun because you hear the passion in their voice. Like when you watch the game on NFL Network, like if it's an item of mean, he's a Chicago guy, our guy, he is passionate as well. But I had the NFL Network on for a while, I'm like, very vanilla, Jeff and Tom, oh man, they see what we all see. And even the cult members out there, I got a text from a couple of my buddies who are all field. I can't believe we're going to trade him and get this kid. I should read you, I will, I'll read you at some point, some of the text, okay, I was a screed of people coming after you and coming after Bears fans that are supporting Caleb Williams. I'll tell you what I like, Captain, again, it was a small sample size, as we well know. But I thought that the escape ability, the play action, the confidence, it all came from protection. I'm sure that there was a couple of plays in there in which Caleb Williams thought he was back in college because of the protection that was given to him by the offensive line. The offensive line every year is an issue or a question that we have every summer leading into the season. I thought for the most part, there was great protection for Caleb Williams. The other thing is to cap is that when you're Caleb Williams, you got to be able to take the wins. That short pass, 15 yards, you're going to take the wins. Also the double clutch, third and sixth, he tries to get it to Caleb, Caleb tries to get it to Roma Dunesay and there's a passing interference call. So again, it's not about 25 yards down the field, it's being able to check your progressions, take a look and look around quickly, get it out in two and a half seconds and be able to connect. I thought that there was patience there and some confidence from the limited time that we saw. Completely agree. Here's one of them that I got. Cap, I was wrong about taking a chance at the upgraded quarterback. In all seriousness, Caleb looked poised, not frozen by overthinking his innate creativity in the passing phase of quarterbacking, definitely is an enormous difference between him and Justin. You were right about going all in at Caleb, but you were totally wrong about Travonsky. Okay, that's one of like eight that I got from buddies of mine who are, oh my God, that kid looks way better than I ever thought he's going to look. So that was for my friend Glen, but I have a bunch of them out there and so do you that are looking going. Do you have room for me on the bandwagon? Guess what? As they said, and remember the Titans, remember the scene when Ronnie Sunshine Bass shows up, we got ourselves a quarterback. Yeah, very, very cool that it's our quarterback. I just like that that there was patience by Caleb Williams there. The play action gives him so much time, Cap. We saw this several times where he gets the ball and there's a fake to the running back because the running game, I think, will be paramount again. As much as I want the offense to move vertically, it was good to see DeAndre Swift is good to be able to see not just DeAndre Swift, but also to be able to see Kelly Hill Herbert and Bayles Jones be able to get the football, the idea that the Bears can run the football or play action where Caleb can roll out to his left or right and connect to receivers, that's going to be key. Again, it's all growing pains. Here's when you get locked in, when you watch the offense, there was a time, Cap, I'm watching this game live. I forgot it was pre-season because I'm looking forward to the offense to come out there again. Like, oh, that's right, because I want it more, it gave me a taste. It was able to what might be a little bit, right? And I'm watching, I'm like, oh, that's right, it's Beijing's time. I want it more. You forget because you say, okay, you got two field goals out of it. All right. Let's see if this can get a touchdown. Oh, that's right. He's done for the day. It was, it was, even my wife who's not the biggest football, like she loved watching our son when he played, but even my wife went, wow, that kind of looks pretty good. And then during the game, I cut a YouTube short. We got a quarter, but she's like, there's 13 points, relax. I get it. He only played a quarter. He's got more to do, but what a jumping off point. Like we didn't go, well, it's only week one, I know he's struggled, but it's only, no. He got everybody excited. Yeah, because everyone just was wondering what this looks like. And again, hats off to the offensive line though, Cap. The conversation coming into last week was, would there be enough healthy offensive lineman to protect Caleb Williams? Should he play? Should he not play based in the offensive line? And what we got from Ryan polls when we sat down with him last Tuesday was we'll have enough offensive linemen and healthy guys to give him the protection that he needs. We'll put together an offensive line that you can work with. And they did. Yeah. Now again, that offensive line has got a ways to go. It's not there yet. They need to continue to stay healthy. They need to continue to work together. I still think they need to add next year. They'll have nine picks, including their own first rounder. They need to address the offensive line. They've got to put serious capital, not a third round pick, not a fifth round. They need another Darnell right type pick. That's what they need. Another got a plug and play. With perspective, with perspective, we have to say, when Ryan polls first got here, the offensive line was in shambles. Yes. And so slowly every year cap, he's trying to build toward being able to give something similar to an iron gate to be able to give Caleb Williams time to throw. So from where he was to where he is right now with this offensive line, it's getting better. If I get a bit of the pack offensive line, I'll take it because where it was, it was a zero. There was no time for Justin Fields. So with Caleb Williams, this is the diamond and the rough. This is the guy. Give him all the protection you can. This upcoming draft, make sure you address that several times. It's good. You've got to baits here. You've got to comb in their shell in there. Okay. But you want to be able to have someone that could be an anchor for you for a decade. Completely agree. So it's fine. Like Darnell right should be a decade long starter right tackle. Kevin, can you stay healthy, stay on the field? We'll get a contract extension and a juicy one at that. But again, to watch that game on Saturday, I've never been that excited about preseason football. Dude, I'm sitting there locked in on a beautiful day going, this is awesome. It's just a taste. It's just a taste. And just to circle back with the offensive line, let's put the facts out there, Cap. So over the last three seasons, Justin Fields was the most sack quarterback in the league with 135, followed by Russell Wilson at 133. But it's interesting about that they're on the same team with the Steelers. But that's the reason why the offensive line is so such a big factor and a big storyline for the spirit team because protection is key. Caleb Williams was had flashbacks thinking about, Hey, I got to all this time in the world. Kid, you're not going to have all the time in the world. Against the Bill's ones, it's pretty good in preseason. And the bell rings, there's already guys from the Titans already talking smack about this first game. They want your head. They want your head Simmons. They want them and he's a hell of a player. So like, keep in mind him rolling out left and right was good, be able to survey the scene and be able to make some of the right throws and plays again, hats off to them. Pretty good. Pretty good kid. Now let's take the next step and play well against the Bengals. You're going to have a joint practice. So he's going to get a lot of work. Let's continue to develop our guy. All right. So if you're on hold, you will be on the air on some open phone lines for you as well. Shay, three, one, two, three, three, two ESPN, three, two, three, seven, seven, six are our phone number. Let's get your thoughts about the bears. Did you watch the game? Just listen to it right here on the home of the bears, ESPN 1000 check in as the bears went 33 to six in the second preseason game. What do you think of Caleb Williams and the bears which stood out most to you will take your phone calls and hear from Caleb Williams. That's next on the Captain Jay Hood morning show. This is Romo Junze. This is Andrew Swift. This is Caligorda. You're listening to Captain Jay Hood on ESPN Chicago, the new home of the Chicago Bears. Captain Jay Hood, weekday morning, seven to ten here on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Here's hoping that you're going to have a great Monday and a great week as we keep your company here on a Bears victory Monday. The Bears defeat the Bills 33 to six you can hear every game right here on the home of the Bears ESPN 1000 of course the ESPN Chicago app as well. So what stood out to me is that Caleb Williams was not overwhelmed. He was a guy that was pretty easy in the pocket, made that flip play to the Andre Swift. I thought that he was steady, but again, we got put in perspective. You and I both know it's preseason is just a little taste. He'll get more time. I'm sure in this upcoming matchup on Saturday and maybe a little bit more against Kansas City will see. But the point is though is that he is getting ready. Look, I saw some preseason football over the weekend where he had starters and some of the backups that were just completely just trash, just not good offensive line wasn't good. The timing wasn't good. That wasn't Shane Bushel out there. That was Caleb Williams. And Caleb Williams, the quarterback for the Chicago Bears had a chance to talk about his feelings after that first game against the Bills on Saturday. So good, there's always, you know, there's always a little bit, you know, of a more focus that you have going to games for whatever reason, even if you try and enter and enter that mindset and things like that throughout the weeks, it's just a sense of control, I guess, a sense of progress, a sense of, you know, a bunch of different things that when you get into games, you know, the comfort level and all of that, you know, normally skyrockets. Yeah, just like John Legend, take it slow. Like we saw that first installment of hard knocks cap is he just got to take it slow. And then when you watch Caleb Williams, again, just incrementally, he'll get more and more comfortable. And then we'll see what happens when the bell rings against the Titans. I think it's really cool that they're going to have the joint practice against the Bengals. Again, it's not a regular season game. I know they have a preseason game, but it's still work against other players on other teams all trying to make a roster. So they're all going to give their very best. And I think it's really good for Caleb to see different looks and different people. And now he'll run out on the on the field from the tunnel that sold your field. I don't know if he'll play against Kansas City. Let's see how this week goes. But what we watched, if you're a Bears fan, you cannot tell me that you didn't look at that game and go, Oh, I haven't seen anything like this in a Bears uniform. We have it. We have not. We will go back, though, three summers ago when we were talking about Justin Fields, how all of us were excited about what Justin Fields could bring to the table. If you remember, cap that preseason game was just Miami Dolphins, and it was Andy Dalton versus Justin Fields, Justin gets out there and it took him a while to get hot, but he finished 14 for 20 good for 102 yards and a touchdown ran the football five times, good for 33 yards and a touchdown and the comfort behind victory. He also had two funnels in that game. But the point is, though, is that for young quarterbacks, it just got to get acclimated and get comfortable. They had to get comfortable. And so for Caleb Williams, we saw what we saw against Buffalo. Now I guess the Bengals at home, and I hope that he feels as comfortable or maybe more comfortable against the Bengals defense. I'm excited also to see how the defense fares against a guy like Joe Burrell. Again, Joe's not going to play a ton, but I would think you'll see him get some significant playing time, and that will be an interesting thing as well. One football related jobs in two weeks, asking you for change outside of McDonald's with his quarterback. Quarterback steps up. He loops back around and makes the sack. It was outstanding. And another one where he joined in with Daniel Hardy. And it was just super cool to see him play through the whistle. Yeah, excited to see where this goes. I want to ask you some other things about the defense as well. Again, the Bears win 33 to six against the Bills in the second preseason game. If you get a chance to watch that game, let's do it right here on ESPN 1000. Jump in with us. 3 1 2 3 3 2 3 7 7 6 is our phone number. And Lyle, here's Lewis, and he's with us here on Captain Jay Hood. Lewis, good morning. Good morning, guys. You know, I got to show the guy I've seen a lot. I mean, I've been cautiously optimistic this is the first time I'm not. I told you that a couple of weeks ago, honestly, I think something that's emblematic of what we're going to get to see out of him and granted it to screen pass, but that screen did the Andre Swift yet what I can't remember who was in his face, hand in his face. Start up and look at Swift knew exactly where he was and was just able to get it to him from a huge game. I mean, Justin Fields, he's going to make him that throw. He's getting sacked. It's a huge difference. It's a huge upgrade. But that's one thing. The main reason that I called is I made a promise to you guys two weeks ago. And you know what, Eddie, on the North side, I'm going to laugh the same way I have laughed when Caleb made that pass on the screen. I hope that you get to see this and I cannot wait to laugh more and more as this season goes on. All right, Lewis. That's the ultimate. Take that to Eddie from the North side. Take that, Eddie. Damn. I'm in his truck right now going, Oh God, I look like a moron for what I said. Hey, man. Listen, you fan. Now you want a fan, Eddie? You have your own opinion. That's fine. More times than not and Eddie from the North side type is right. More times than not. Take a look at the scoreboard cap over the last 20, 30 years. More times than not at Eddie from the North side type is correct. However, we're hoping that this various teams can change the narrative. Right? Yes. Okay. That's all it's just to watch that game. It's super exciting to see where it could be had once at a step of a time for Caleb Williams and the Bears offense. I mean, you have to understand where we are and understand, you know, what we have and where we're headed. That's the most important thing, but you also have to be where your feet are. So when you're out there in the field, when we're preparing for this game, you're enjoying it. You're having fun. You're having a blast. You know, we take a step back when we get into our early tomorrow, you know, we take a step back. We go to the tape and then onto the next, onto the next preseason. And then, you know, from there, you take it from there and then you keep growing. You keep growing. You keep growing. And then we just, you know, keep, keep counting those days, counting those hours and getting after it. We have to know the names cap. We have to know between now and the start of the regular season, who will be the stalwarts at offensive line for the Chicago Bears? Like, who's going to wind up playing center? Can I just say with perspective, you should know at this point in time, if you're trying to go for it, meaning trying to get to the playoffs, who your center is, you know how strong that center position is as an anchor for a young quarterback. The idea that at this time, we still don't know if it's Coleman Shelton or if it's Ryan Bates. I like to have that solved sooner than later. That's important because of the rhythm for Caleb Williams to know who he's working with. Well, if Nate Davis was in there and now it sounds like he's a week to week injury, sounds like might be a groin injury, if Nate Davis was starting at right guard, would Ryan Bates be the starting center? Would Coleman Shelton be the starting center? It's a good question. Don't know. I don't know. I also like to know if Nate Davis is long for this team or not, you got to be able to know that right guard, and no, it's a guard who, it matters, the protection matters, whoever it is. Is it going to be? Is it how durable will Tim and Jenkins and Nate Davis be? Now again, with Tim and Jenkins, it's something we talked about a lot on the show. Like when he's healthy, he's outstanding. So like what Tom Thibodeau said about Derek Rose, you know, when he's healthy, he's unbelievable. Right. When he's not, he's not, well, like what was Belichick's big line? Accountability is one of the greatest abilities to have. Are you out there? Don't tell me how good you are. Can you play? Are you playing? And we'll see. Tim and Jenkins is wonderfully talented. He's got to be able to stay on the field. This is all just the puzzle pieces that have to come together for Caleb Williams and the Bears. Three, one, two, three, two, three, seven, seven, six is our telephone number. We go to Rich in Tampa, Florida, listening on the ESPN Chicago app. Rich. Good morning. Yeah. How you guys doing today? What's going on, man? How are you? You know what I'm doing? It's a Bears Victory Monday. Yeah. I hear you. I was going today just for a couple of things real quick. It's first time caller. I don't know if you guys remember that was a show years ago called the monsters. Yes. Yeah. You guys remind me of every type of format. I really, I really enjoy it. Appreciate it. That is a, that is a huge compliment. Huge. Two, two, considers Jiggets and North because they were Hall of Famers. There's no question about it. My pleasure. The only thing too, I've watched that game. I'm a huge bass fan, Cubs fan. But I just wanted to say with the hype for Caleb, I'm in on it, but it kind of reminds me of the Dr. Pepper commercial during college games where they go, oh my God, I can't believe it. And you know, they're burning the jerseys and I can't believe I fell for the hype. You know, and then guys like, it's only the first play of the game. Right. That's a college football fan for you, for sure. I would just, you know, with the hype, I'm just, you know, I'm in on it. I'm a pole believer of Caleb, but he's just with the hype. It's like, you know, Caleb Williams, he's going to be the MVP. He's going to win eight silver balls, but then it's like, wait a minute, he's only played two series in the first preseason game. That's right. That's right. And for me, Rich, and we appreciate the telephone call, it's all about perspective. We're all excited about what the Bears could be. The Bears are more than Caleb Williams. I say that because while Justin feels as a quarterback, everyone was focused on Justin, thinking that Justin is the Chicago Bears. It's not, there's a rich tradition of the Chicago Bears that's beyond Justin Fields. What Caleb Williams, as Cap says, he's chasing greatness, but it's not just him. The Bears are chasing greatness. The general manager says, I want to be able to capture the North and never give it back. It's just about legacy, not just for Caleb, it's for everybody. To take it to the next step, to be able to win the division, to see a Super Bowl, so many young people around us, Cap, that have no idea the feeling of the city when the Bears won the Super Bowl, have no idea, no clue, no documentary and no podcast could give you the real feeling that it was when the Chicago Bears are winners. It was insane, insane. It was electric and to see how pathetic that we've been for so long and now, all of a sudden, to look at our team and go, still a work in progress, still a ways to go, but guess what? Trending in a very positive direction. 312-332-ESPN-3323776 is our phone number coming up. We hear from Matti Reflowes, the head coach for the Chicago Bears, and take more of your phone calls. It's a Bears Victory Monday, on the Cap and Jay Hood Morning Show. Leaders to Daze Headline, with Cap and Jay Hood. Bears drilled the Bills in pre-season action on Saturday, heard it right here on the home of the Bears, ESPN 1333-6, the final Caleb Williams played the first quarter, two drives, two field goals, and he looked outstanding. Cubs took all four games from the White Sox this year in the Crosstown series, taking Friday 7-6, Saturday 3-1, Miguel Amaya, the game-winning hit in the top of the eighth inning. The Cubs will be in Cleveland tonight, first time back in Cleveland, since they blew up the World Series winning core. The White Sox get the Yankees at guaranteed rate field. [Music] Football, at just about the 40 yards, like snap back, pressure, coming, dumps it off, cuts with left 40, 45-50, left alone 40, to the 30, cutting at the 20, turf snake, kind of with a man on his back to finish it off, the Bears will be in the red zone above, and a debuff pass, under pressure, Caleb Williams dumps it off, and it's a catch and run up 42 yards and the Bears first down. Catch every Bears game right here on the home of the Bears, ESPN 1000, Cap and Jay Hood, weekday morning 7-10, with you till 10 o'clock then Mike Greenberg comes in at 10, Blacken Abdullah in for Carmen and Yorko at 12, Wadlam Sylvia 230, White Sox Yankees 6-30, right here on the home of the White Sox, ESPN 1000. Did he call it a turf snake? He did. Waddle had always taught me that it was called Freddy Keebler the Turf Elf, and so my wife and I have used that when our son Garrett was playing college football, oh, Freddy Keebler she would say to him when he was on the Freddy Keebler the Turf Elf, so that's what I always call it, Freddy Keebler, the Turf Elf, he just reaches up, tackles it, down went DeAndre Swift, but that was a fun play man, I'm like how did he get the ball there and then they showed the replay, he just flips it across his face, let's go. I want to ask you about the defense in just a moment, Cap, but the running the football is key for a young quarterback, the reason why we have such an emphasis on the offensive line is because it's not just for Caleb and for him to be able to survey the scene with time on play action, but also to run the football to take the pressure off the quarterback. A lot of carries that we saw, scroll up this, Khalil Herbert, 9 for 31 for him as long as it was 14, Khalil Herbert, is that him saying give me the ball I deserve to be on this team or give me the ball, showcase me because it's not like that you're taking a step back with Khalil Herbert, it's just a numbers game. How many running backs will you have when this season starts that you can depend on? Roshan Johnson, DeAndre Swift, Khalil Herbert II or not? I think you'll have three running backs on the team, the question will be like Ian Wheeler ran hard, had two touchdowns in the game, does he fit as a special teams guy, do you trade Khalil Herbert, DeAndre Swift is your starter, you paid him like a starter, he looks like a starter and he's going to be the starter and then Roshan's the best blocker of all the group. Travis Homer? Another special teams type guy, so how many do you keep? That's the question, now we're thinking that it's going to be two plus one that'll be on special teams or over on the side. But Khalil Herbert, I thought of course, ran the football well, that's not a surprise. Just wondering how the Bears look at him is whether he's going to be expendable or not on this team. I like him though. Let's see how many they kept their 53 men roster a year ago. Remember I told you, I didn't expect for the Bears to upgrade the running back room. I thought that Roshan Johnson as a young man, as a first-year player and Khalil Herbert was going to be fine as a one-two punch. I've told you all off-season that they were going to upgrade that room. I kept hearing they really liked Saquon Barkley, but it got too rich for their blood. Then in Hartnock's before training camp with the Giants, you heard Joe Shea and the GM of the Giants say, yeah, Chicago and Philadelphia are the ones involved on Saquon Barkley. Then the Bears pivoted, they didn't want to go as expensive as Saquon was, and they got DeAndre Swift and seemed like they're very happy to have done that. Look, this team has still got a ways to go. They were seven and ten last year, but the talent level that they have at the skill positions is undeniable. Thoughts from Matt Eberfloos, the head coach for the Bears on the amount of snaps for Caleb Williams. Yeah, just overall, we really wanted this to take this opportunity to get the process and have a really good plan in place for the reps who wanted to get. Obviously, a good job on third down, completing that pass to DJ, and then making some explosives there and getting into the red zone. We stalled out there and it was fourth and four, I believe, at the end, so we ended up kicking it, but I thought overall, in the pocket, protected the football, had a consistent performance, and now we've got to learn from this and get better. What we did well is very good, and what we need to improve on. I told the team, in the locker room there, that we've got to level up the challenge of last week to be able to get better as a whole group individually and collectively, and they did that, and we've got to do it again, because we don't have time not to improve, so there's got to be a sense of urgency in our building. Matt Eberfloos. That's a sense of urgency. Last year, they kept Roshan Johnson, Travis Homer, Khalil Herbert, Deontae Foreman, Darrington Evans, and Kari Blassen game was the full back, so they had six at the running back spot, if you count the full back, six. So that's probably what you're going to see here. Jay Moore, do you remember me asking Ryan Polls if they're going to do a musical theme for the season, anytime that you have a song to rally around, right? So we're hearing a lot of level up from Eberfloos, so I think that you're going to crank some Ciara, I think that you're going to have to do that. Level up, because he's saying that a lot, that's this crutch now, that we've got to level up, meaning that you've got to get to a certain level, right, Cap? You've got to be able to raise the bar, I guess you could say. Correct. Now, Polls, I don't think it's a huge music guy, he even said that to us. Yeah, whatever, I play with the popular, whatever. I talked to Tyson Beijing the other day, and I said, favorite music, he's like, not a huge music guy, because I'll listen, you know, but not a huge music guy. There are other guys all in on the music. I saw a cool video, I don't know when it was shot, of Steve Perry at a San Francisco Giants game, and they were playing Don't Stop Believing, which the Sox used in '05, but I think Steve Perry is a big Giants fan. They were playing Don't Stop Believing, and he was at the game, and all of a sudden the camera caught him, and he stood up and started singing with the crowd. It was super, super cool, so I don't know where the bears are going to go yet. So interesting. Yeah. The defense, you mentioned early about Austin Booker, again, you're just trying to check off things that you're not worried about, it's like your laundry list that you have at home. I've done this, I've done this, make sure you check it off that way you leave no stone unturned, you want to make sure that you've got everything taken care of. Austin Booker's performance, pretty good coin-to-matty. Good. You know, it's good, you know, it's what we saw, you know, coming out. He's got a really good slip, a really good natural ability to rush the pass to a speed and not pre-determined what he's going to do ahead of time. I think that stresses the offensive tackles out when a guy doesn't pre-determine or shuffle his feet. It just shows that speed, the power or the speed and spin inside, and I know that the out-and-out moves that he likes to do, so it's been good. So, Cap, let's talk about it this way. I don't think you and I have talked about it from this standpoint. So when it comes to leveling up, and speaking of leveling up, when it comes to the defense, we've talked all about, in Gakwe, we've talked about trying to have veterans in some of these spots. It has a bigger spotlight on your depth chart when you have development happening as the season progresses. Like for instance, Dominic Robinson, we saw him make some plays out there on Saturday. Robinson Booker, twice in a row now, the Houston game in this one, be able to make some splash plays for the defense. If you're not going to be able to go in free agency and say, "We want this guy now, we need this guy now," then it's a big spotlight on your development to say, "We got young guys that could be able to get the job done. We're not spending money right now, we will, but right now we need to develop these young players." Look, if you can look at your roster and go, "I don't need to pay any Gakwe 8, 9, 10, whatever the number is in millions of dollars." If you don't have to do that because you believe internally, I got that covered. The Marcus Walker or Austin Booker or Dr. Dominic Robinson, he looks massive. That dude, what have you been eating and what have you been doing in the weight room? Wow. Could be a dude, man. Could be a dude. But this is year three. He better be a dude if he's going to be long term in the National Football League. So that was really encouraging to see. They're going to peruse the cut down list, see if there's a numbers game where they can make a deal with someone to go get a player. Maybe it's an offensive lineman. Maybe it is a defensive lineman. We're going to find out. On the amount of snaps, Raquel Williams, Maddie Ruflu, says, "Yeah, just overall we really wanted this to take this opportunity to get the process and have a really good plan in place for the reps we wanted to get. And obviously a good job on third down, completing that pass at DJ, and then making some explosives there and getting into the red zone. We stalled out there and it was fourth and four I believe at the end so we ended up kicking it. But I thought overall in the pocket, protected the football, had a consistent performance, and now we've got to learn from this and get better. What we did well is very good, and what we need to improve on. I told the team in the locker room there that we've got to level up a challenge of last week to be able to get better as a whole group individually and collectively, and they did that. And we had to do it again because we don't have time not to improve. So there's got to be a sense of urgency in our building." Sense of urgency, Cap, as we go to Joey G and Melrose Park on ESPN 1000, Joey G. Good morning. Sense of urgency. I love it. Oh, Cap. What's up, Joey? How you been? Good man. I've got you. Walking and breathing. God bless. Yeah. First of all, that's a fine. What was it, like burning book banks, dollar and the share? Yes. We're just trying to cut the gaps, try to try to add some money. We just want to make sure you're still alive, Joey. You're walking and breathing. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I'm still alive. I just, you know. Was it Danny, get like Booker, or did Shea like Booker? Shea like Booker, Danny prays at the altar of Booker because he went to Kansas. The Jayhawk is a die-hard KU guy. Yeah. So Shea, who else do you? The kids are machine. What we saw the last two games, he's a machine. I like that. I like the adjustment. The bear was made in the second half, the bears actually look like ball hawks. There was three guys at the running back, four guys sometimes, and going back to your plate cap where he made a spin move and almost had the quarterback. He got back up and he sat them by his legs, Booker. He did? So yeah, he's, I think he's a beast. I think the speed is going to be helping him a lot. As far as Caleb Williams, it's over, boys. Get your party hands ready and get your beards ready. I've got a beard. Yes. You've got a beard. So you're okay. Yeah. All right, Joey. We appreciate the telephone call. Be as simple and as easy as we saw throughout the season for Caleb Williams because when the season starts, he's going to see a massive pass rush and how will he handle it? Will he handle it with such graces he had on Saturday? Will he panic? Will he be somewhere in between? He hasn't seen it all yet. He hasn't seen it all yet. What he was though, Cap, is that he wasn't overwhelmed. That's when I take away from Saturday, it wasn't like, oh my God, here comes the defense. He took his time and patience. And again, kudos to the offensive line. That helped him immensely. The offensive line, I thought, was solid. There's still a long way to go for that group. They have got to prove that they can be a really good unit for 17 games. They do. Nate Davis has got to get back on a football field or find another team to play for. That's just, he cannot always be hurt or his availability will be the biggest liability. So if now you got to play Ryan Beitzich, right guard, now you got Coleman Shout. What happens if one of them go down? All right. What are you going to do about it? Jotiri Carter is it Jerome Carvin. We'll see. They're not there yet. The offensive line still needs another upgrade. Yeah. No doubt. They're seasoning for the offense to work together. Like for instance, we would love to see six from Kayla Williams-Saroma-Dunze. Something happened on that play. Kayla will talk about it coming up next on Captain J-hood. This is Kevin Byer. You're listening to Captain J-hood on the new home of the Chicago Bears, ESPN Chicago. We got Shout and No-Shout coming away at eight o'clock. Jesse Rogers with the latest in the Cubs and Sox and everything else MLB at 835 right here on ESPN 1,000. 3, 1, 2, 3, 2, 3, 2, 3, 7, 7, 6, our phone number. Cap, you know what have been the cherry on the Caleb Sunday on Saturday? That six, that touchdown in the back of the end zone that fell short on third down. Oh, the one where he overthrew Rome. He really didn't have a window to throw it, so he threw it where it couldn't get picked off. Do you know about that one? Yeah. Yeah. And that comes from time of getting on the same, you know, same page and same connection. We talked about it. I actually thought he was going to take it high because I thought he saw the guy which he did. He told me he saw the guy that was below him, the one defender and one of our teammates down the right sideline. I thought he was going to either settle or go to back pylon. He started coming out flat, but then I had to let the ball go and I tried to give him a chance and put it back pylon and see if he could run under it. Yeah, but he put it where, if he's not going to be able to catch it, that ball is going out of bounds. We're good. Live to fight another day. So liked it a lot. What do we call the DeAndre Swift play? Is that a no look pass? Is it a shovel? How do we describe that? That to me, that's just improvising on the fly like old s here. You take it. It was a great play. I think it was a was it a called screen maybe, but he had a lot of hands in his face and he found a way to get the ball there. That's just a playmaker making a play man. How many rookies are doing that? Not many. Just like you're just eating it, getting sacked or whatever. He just saw someone open and just like, Hey man, you take it something you see in college all the time. No, it wasn't a no look. I wish I could claim that it was, but it wasn't. I saw him for a quick second and then I really saw his gloves because he had I believe bright orange gloves on or something like that. So I saw it open and I can feel the defenders kind of breaking through the line which they showed on the screen. So offensive line did a great job making it making a scene believable as if they were going to let up a sack and then tossed it over the head and we got I think it was around 40 yards or so. So it was great. Well, to break down a Mitch Trabisky for Buffalo. Here's David Kaplan. Captain. Who? You saw him out there. Pretty good kid. He's a backup kid. Yeah. I understand what he is. Was that embarrassing? Was he not? It's what you expect. It's what you've seen, right? He's a backup. That's it. Pretty solid. That is it. He's just a good dude in the room. He's a backup. He's never going to be more than that. It is what it is. Tell us about your play sheet. You're 10 for 18. No, you try at the plays 10 for 18, 82 yards. Go ahead. Sack twice. So I really, really was excited by what I saw from the Bears of Kaleb Williams. Now, wait a minute now, Mitch Mazarati, Mitch, take that doesn't matter anymore. He's like a Buick. He's done. We turn now to Shay Norling. Shay, let's break down Shane Bushel his time from Texas and Steve Bushel. Steve Bushel, the Cubs third baseman. The Golden Frog. Yeah. Digging deep in the bag now, huh? Hey, Bushel. How about that, Shay? At Texas. Pretty solid, right? You got picked six by Micah Baskerville. Yes, man. That was the, did the weather for years in this town and now getting it done in the secondary. That's Steve Baskerville. Different one. Not related. What do you mean? What do you mean? Did you ask him? You don't know. You've got your beak in there. You don't know if they're not related or not. I know. You ask him? No. I know. Because certain things you know, what could you, how could you tell the complexion? Potentially. No. No. One's black. One's white. Yes. Uh. Brother. Okay. Let's do some research on that for a second. Uh, in Madison, let's think of the ESPN Chicago app here is Dimitri on Cap and Jhood. Dimitri, good morning. Uh, Deb, Jhood, how y'all doing, man? What's up, brother? Uh, nothing much, man. Running late, taking my daughter's school. You know, dad things. Yes. Uh, so I wanted to point out a couple of things. First of all, uh, loved what I saw from the Bears, uh, from Kaleb Williams specifically. A lot of, you know, a lot of haters were, were, were texting me, hitting my phone like, dude, that was against the second team. No, no, no, don't do that. Don't do that. That was against the first team. Don't do that. That was against the first team defense. They were just missing Bon Miller and I think, uh, another lineman who went out like early in the game. So don't, don't try to lessen our success. Yeah, you're talking about Ed Oliver, who got hurt like the first play of the game. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Exactly. So I was like, don't do that. Don't try to lessen our success. We went in there and we beat them. I like to have finished that one, but, uh, also I wanted it to know if y'all noticed something and I'll, I'm going to, I'm going to hang up and get y'all with me, you know, know what y'all say on this. Did you notice that when Caleb is scrambling horizontally, he takes a second to look behind him. He, he takes a second to look behind himself to see if anybody's chasing him. So that way if nobody is, he'll, he can reset and throw it's the tiniest thing, but it's so freaking cool. I want to know what y'all think. Love y'all guys. I got to pull that tape up again and take a look at that, see if he gives a quick look back there. All I know is I watched, I'm going to get myself in trouble, but I don't care. I think you already have, but go ahead. How did I get myself in trouble? The Baskerville? Oh, they're both black, sorry. I was thinking of Boussaint, so I was wrong, but I want to get myself in trouble with the cult. Jay Morchus fell out. He just fell out, in fact, it just doesn't make any sense. There you go, thank you Berman. So I'm going to get myself in trouble with the cult here. I watched Justin the other night. Yeah. It is in clubs. All right. Caleb, Justin, and again, Justin is what he is. Two fumbles, stumbled into a couple sacks. He's athletic. Justin is not even in the same league. And those of you out there that wanted the haul to build around Justin, you're out of your freaking minds if you still believe that. Shout out no shot in two minutes on Captain Jay Hood.
