J.J. McCarthy's status for the 2024 season is in flux. The Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback tore his meniscus and will undergo knee surgery, head coach Kevin O'Connell told reporters on Tuesday. While McCarthy will be sidelined, it's unclear how long he'll be out. Doctors won't be able to determine if McCarthy's injured meniscus will need a trim or a complete repair. A trimming of the meniscus would only sideline him for four to six weeks according to NFL media. A complete repair of the meniscus would likely sideline him for longer than that. McCarthy suffered the injury during the Vikings pre-season win over at the Las Vegas Raiders. It's unclear when the injury happened, but O'Connell told reporters that McCarthy sent his knee was sore at one point during the game. McCarthy threw for 188 yards, two touchdowns in an interception. With Tuesday's news, Sam Darnold will almost certainly be the Viking starting QB in week one. Even though the Vikings took McCarthy with the tenth pick in the NFL draft, Darnold has been the favorite to win the job as he's been working with the starting unit. However, an arbitration panel wouldn't reconsider its decision asking Child's to return her bronze medal, USA Gymnastics shared Tuesday. USA Gymnastics said in a statement, quote, "We are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including to the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure the just-scoring placement and medal award for Jordan. The court of arbitration for sport, voided an on-floor appeal from Child's coach that vaultred her to third, saying the appeal came four seconds beyond the one-minute time limit for scoring inquiries.
