And before we do that, Mike, I just wanted to say personally, I tend to get a little overly emotional at times, especially around the trade deadline. And I probably went a little too far in my commentary at times. So I wanted to apologize to you for that and thank you for being a good sport and coming along with us, especially at a time like this, where you've got a lot of transactions happening. And I guess we'll start with Grayson Rodriguez. And last time this happened, I guess it was a grade two lat issue. And that ended up being a few months. Were you able to get any clarity from the initial testing back in Baltimore today? Thanks, Jason. And yeah, the Grayson development is still very fresh. You know, we all saw what happened on the field. He didn't feel like he should pitch that night. He had a complaint of some soreness in a new spot. We scratched him. We're getting our arms around it medically right now. That takes a couple of days for me to really have a responsible answer on it. But he's on the IL to fight it to stay. That's going to mean he misses a couple of starts at a minimum and will be helpful that it's short. But I really don't know as of this hour. And it's just something that we're still navigating. Well, Mike, in the short term with at least a couple of starts of him missing. Is Albert Suarez going to slot into that spot in the starting rotation? You know, we haven't made a final decision on that. But you know, you saw what he did last night. He saw what he's done throughout the season. And, you know, we jerk this guy around a little bit too. So to speak between the rotation and he started off in Triple A. And then he goes right to the bullpen and he's just posting with the best attitude imaginable and doing really good things for us. It's hard to picture with all the injuries that we've had. It's hard to picture ourselves. The half came out of first without Albert. So he's right at the top of the list. But that said, you know, we're still kind of sitting down as a staff and working through all this, we've had other transactions today. And there's a few balls in the air in terms of how we want to set up the pitching staff. But I think that Albert has put himself in the position to kind of carry the torch there in the fifth spot for as long as he's needed. We've seen Cade Povitch and Chase McDermott to one degree or the other get to sort of toggle into this rotation as well. Do you guys have any more clarity on Chase McDermott, the extent of his injury and absence at the AAA level and with Povitch, would you consider him kind of deal hauling it a little bit and seeing how that plays in the bullpen a little bit at Norfolk or does the injury to Grayson just mean we need all the pitching, starting pitching depth we can get? Well, I don't have too much to add unfortunately on the Chase McDermott timeline at this time. Like I said, this is all kind of happened at once in the last few days. And it does take a few days, a few opinions, imaging to kind of get your arms around a prognosis on an arm injury, but look his shoulder area is bothering him and that's going to be a while. So I think he's kind of out of our depth picture for the moment until he gets healthy. And then the ones, the other guys that have started for us this year that are still up and running in AAA arcade and Cole Irvin who cleared waivers. And I think at this point in time, whoever's not in the five man rotation, we're going to lean towards keeping them at starter depth because the trade deadline is over. We need all the starters we can get to make it through the finish line. And that's probably what's going to happen, but certainly as things evolve, we'll consider different scenarios. And as you get into September and you get an extra man, I think there might be some different things on the table, but right now my best estimation is that we're going to try to preserve all of the healthy majorly experienced starters that we have in the organization and keep them a start role. Mike, a really scary situation. A couple of weeks ago, a Camden Yards, when Hester Kerstab was hidden ahead, ended up having a stint on the concussion IL. And then today placed back on the 10 day concussion IL, I guess that he experienced setbacks in recovering from the concussion. Yes, always a case by case basis with these concussions. So what happened is we optioned him and he, the symptoms that he's currently experiencing are mild and he did not report recurrent symptoms until a couple of days after he was optioned. We immediately had him checked out by our doctor, our team doctors and then a concussion specialist outside the organization and it was determined that he should return to concussion protocols. So I think it's just one of those things, but fortunately we reacted quickly. I don't have a timeline on that, but hopefully it's mild and it's not too long and we'll adjust his activities accordingly in the near term, but hopefully we'll have him back in the picture. But yeah, these things are tough and you saw him get 97 to the back of the head a few weeks ago and you know, that's not insignificant. Yeah. And we're talking to Michael Elias here on Inside Access. Well, thankfully it hasn't been all bad news for you guys and the Lord knows you're dealing with a lot as we just went through, including, again, if you missed it, Jacob Webb also on the 15 day IL. Jackson Holiday has obviously come back with a vengeance. Are there some mechanical things that he did? He obviously still has the toe tap. I'm not positive if it's as pronounced, but he seems to be much more on time. He's obviously crushing things. The other way, Velo hasn't been a problem to strike counts, haven't been a problem. How many boxes did he check for you guys that last stint in Norfolk? Well, I'm so happy for him, you know, after having that abrupt and rough debut. And like I said at the time, I mean, he went down and took a positive takeaway from that experience and he applied himself and worked with our hitting coaches. And yeah, I think a lot of it was, as you said, is some of his physical movements are a little more subtle, but you know the same guy in the same swing. But I also think a part of it is just the reset and ultimately, you know, it's on me. I think we called him up a little quick and he hadn't spent a lot of time in AAA. And even top prospects that are spending 600 plate appearances in AAA are coming up and struggling the big league. So that was a lot to ask of a 20 year old. But even now you can see the talent that he is. And you know, he doesn't need to keep going like this. He's helping the team. He takes good at bat. He's playing good defense. We've got guys hurt. So I think this is a good stretch where he can enjoy himself and we're going to take what we can get from him. But so far he's been amazing. So kudos to him with all that's already on his plate. Do you do you rep him at all at short, you know, before games or would that be Ramon at this point? Because, you know, obviously, Hori Mateo is not here and Gunner can't play every single inning. Yeah, we've got a situation now with not only Hori Mateo, but Westburg down that our short stock coverage is before Jackson came up with basically just Gunner. And Gunner's been playing a lot and in addition to the all star game, in addition to the home round derby, you play so hard, you know, you do have to worry about that. So we had the Von Soto up for a couple of days and we do have him in the organization as well as some other guys in Triple A, but holiday is a short stop. He's been playing there his whole life and the staff with the team, the coaching staff are going to make sure he's ready should that should that be called upon. But hopefully that's something not something that we need to lean into too hard because we need both of those guys up the middle right now, but it is a possibility and it is part of our on roster short shortstop depth chart right now. Just beginning to Michael I as it's inside access on the fan, Mike Kobe Mayo recently got the call up and we know that working on his defense in the minors was a big priority from him. Where have you seen him make strides in that area and what have you seen from him thus far? Well, he hasn't gotten too much action so far in the majors, but all we're really asking him to do right now is to make the routine play not 100% of the time, but you know, just make the routine play and give good about and he's doing that. He's a really big guy. It's hard to play the infield when you're as tall as he is, but he's so athletic that he's been able to do it at a high level and I think he can do it at the major league level at third base and stay at the position, but it doesn't mean he's a finished product. It doesn't mean he's going to play it as well as we've seen Urias and Westbrook do it in years past, but we haven't asked him to do that and he does have a really strong arm so it enables him to make some tough plays and for a big guy, he's really good at the body control play too. So I think we're going to see some really good flashes from him there, but he is coming up and helping us at third base at a time when he's badly needed and I hope just like Jackson did, he's soaking everything in and learning from this experience and I do think it's that that have looked good even though the numbers aren't there. So we'll see what he does here the next few days, but I think it'll be nice for him if he can get a ball to fall on the grass. Mike, obviously when you guys acquired Gregory Soto, you know, he's got some pretty extreme splits and he's a guy that really you just need to be super tough on lefties. Is it a matter of command with him to lefties or the things that you guys think you can do to weaponize him differently to try to get him to harness that velocity? Yeah, I think it is command. I mean, these early struggles that we've been seeing, he's getting behind an account of lefties and then he's either walking them or getting a base hit. Nick, that's always been part of his game, but he appears to be in a particular funk in that regard right now and we know the talent that's in there, so he'll work out of this, but it's tough when somebody comes over in a trade and we all want to see them hit the ground running and make a positive impression. So it's hard on the player, it's hard on me, it's hard on the manager when a guy gets off to a really rough start like this, but like anything in baseball, I think more of it is luck than we realize and we do need him. We brought in all those pitchers at the trade deadline for the reason that you just saw today, like we're going to have injuries. We need more major league quality pitchers in the organization and he's going to help us and we want the velocity and the tough look from the left side that he provides. So we'll get him going. Mike Eloy Jimenez is off to a strong start as an aural, but coming in from the White Sox at ground ball rate was really, really high this year. But underlying metrics did you see with the men as for you to pull off that move? Yeah, I think underlying is kind of a good word. I mean, he's having a down year on the surface, but the quality of the at bat remain good. The threat that he kind of presents when he's standing in the batter's box was always there, particularly against left handed pitching, which is something that we were lacking, especially after deciding to trade off the haze for pitching. But he can hit right handed pitching too and uses the whole field and particularly gap to gap. So it's hard to defend against and we've seen it in the first few days. He hit the ball really hard and there's just a lot there to like and he's not a hundred percent healthy and he hasn't been, so that's still being worked through, but he's healthy enough to DH, give good at bats and we'll try to grow it from there as he gets out of this injury mode. But so far, the quality of bats and I think the pen and race has lifted his spirit and I think it's more representative of the type of hitter that he is than what he did with the White Sox for the first half. Mike, before we let you go, one last thing and this is itself as a testament to the job you guys have done because I don't think we've ever had to ask you a question like this before, but Anthony Santander is getting to a point where he's an impending free agent and he's obviously one of the best switch hitters in baseball and clearly loves being here and clearly is a bit of the heart and soul of your team and a leader. Do you guys have any philosophical sort of differences about trying to extend anybody in season? You've obviously got a ton going on to keep this thing going with all these injuries, et cetera, but do you even entertain something like that now or do you just have to table it to the off season? Yeah, I mean, I would echo the compliments that you made about Tony, whatever you guys see on the screen, you know, when you're at the park, like behind the scenes, he's just a great guy and he's really putting together a great season. I've been kind of boring on this extension topic in the past, but for reasons that I've already said, and then also, you know, the fact that our new ownership group has just settled in as of opening day, you know, early April, we've got so much going on in season. It is something that is more typically tackled in the off season and you know, there's a lot that goes into it and it can be tough while season's going on, but you know, he is a great player, like you mentioned, the switch hitter, you know, it's something that is rare and valuable, but there's a whole lot that goes into the business of baseball and ultimately things come down to case by case and certain circumstances. And it's hard for me to make sweeping statements about what we may do in season or not do, but we love santan there and you know, he's really been a big part of where we are right now, despite some of the challenges that we've had health lives throughout the year. So I'm sure he's going to finish really strong and you know, we'll see where we're at. He's GM Michael Iis. Mike, thanks so much for taking the time, especially in the stretch wrong. Guys, you got coming up next 410-583-1057, if you want to join us now to react to anything that Michael Iis said, we will react, have our own reactions to what Michael Iis told us, but 410-583-1057, we'll take your phone calls next on the fan. That's going to mean he misses a couple of starts at a minimum, and will be helpful that it's short. But I really don't know as of this hour, and it's just something that we're still navigating. That was O's GM Mike Elias, who just got off the phone with us, and you asked him about Grayson Rodriguez's status at a minimum, he's going to miss a couple of starts. And then I followed up with that about Albert Suarez, and he basically said that he's put himself in a position to take over Grayson's spot. Well, and there's really nobody else. Yeah. I mean, Kate Povitch would be the only other one. McDermott is out indefinitely, so if it was going to be another righty, it's not McDermott. If you're, you do have Tucker Davidson at Triple A, who's pitching the major leagues, you have Bruce Zimmerman, and that Norfolk rotation is pitching the major leagues. But I would imagine they would go back to Povitch if they need another starter. And then, you know, look, they signed JD Davis to a minor league deal. Is there a chance that some other starter, you know, gets released and they claim them on waivers or somebody gets ops out of a minor league deal or whatever, like it's possible. But it kind of is what it is right now. And losing web who's been, I don't know, no worse than their second or third best reliever all year. That's another devastating blow. Brian Baker was the corresponding move for web being placed on the I.L. with right elbow inflammation for 10, 5, 8, 3, 1, 5, 7, Garrett isn't Pasadena, Garrett, you're on the fan. Yes. Yeah. I would just like to weigh in. And my main takeaway, I'm not jealous of Michael I's right now. Yeah. Yeah. Just all of these questions and they're all as important as the next. Are we going to pay some time there? What's going on with Grayson? Are we going to pay Corvette at the end of the year? All of these questions are bullpen is just on with the end and now there's no external help. So that was my main takeaway. Thanks. No, thank you. Yeah. He's got, he's got a lot on his plate right now. Dean is in Florida. Dean, you're on the fan. Yes. Mike. Hello. What's up, Dean? Dean, you're gone. Sorry. Paul's Dean. Sorry, Dean. But no, I mean, to the previous caller's point, especially, and he was talking about some of the off season moves. I mean, gosh, the next six months are going to be really, really fascinating. But even just in the stretch run now, I mean, how now you're pitching staff is really decimated with injuries right now and you're trying to plug some holes and also in the midst of trying to fix some guys like Gregory Soto and he didn't really mince words when it came to Gregory Soto. And we'll see how Trevor Rodgers bounces back tonight because he had an extremely Ralph Orioles debut. Yeah. And look, I think Mike also conceded that they're having to sort of run a bunch of things suboptimal right now. The bullpen is not where you would want it to be. They just lost their number two starter and they're really getting by right now without a true backup shortstop and they're carrying guys in in Jimenez and Mayo, whose defense is questionable at best. That's really an Eloy's case. It's not existent. And in Kobe's case, we're, we're, we're figuring it out that that's, you're compromised a lot of spots right now. Like this, this is not a tuned up well-oiled machine right now. They're kind of in triage mode. Well, you mentioned the Grayson Rodriguez injury coming up next. We're going to dive back into that and what that means for the starting rotation. And also there's been multiple roster moves. We will reset that. If you missed it, that is next. It's inside access on the fan or he's going to continue to get evaluated. So that's kind of all we know right now. We had some lat discomfort warming up prior to the game, 10 minutes before the game in Suarez. Then we rushed him down to the bullpen to start the game. So I hope everything works out. Okay. We had a little bit of shoulder soreness early in the year, came some time off. He's been feeling fine through a really good bullpen in Cleveland, just kind of came up tonight while he's warming up. That was manager Brandon Hyde following last night's loss to the Blue Jays and Masson. They caught him on camera prior to the game, talking to pitching coach Drew French. He could read his lips saying that I don't feel right and he didn't. And you heard from Brandon Hyde, right, lat shoulder discomfort. He has officially been placed on the 15 day IL and this is grace and second stint on the IO. He missed two and a half weeks with right shoulder inflammation earlier this season and something that you mentioned going back to March, Jason, the fact that this is still a young pitcher. And this is someone that he pitched 122 innings in the majors last year, 41 innings at Norfolk. And he's right around that 122 mark in major league innings this year. So it, these type of things can happen. Well, and I think like 2019 at Del Marva, he made all his normal starts. Now again, he was never going more than five or six innings mostly, but got through that whole year normally, right? And then you had the 2020 season where everything's screwy because of COVID and the 60 kid, you know, 60 people in the bubble and all that. And then obviously we know he did suffer some injuries in the minors. So last year was a big jump for him in a lot of ways. And even then he got the reset back in the minors, which kind of took some of the wear and tear and tension off because those innings just don't feel like major league innings do. And they were able to sort of, at least for a period of time, get to a six man rotation in the second half last year and back off a bunch of people. That obviously is not in the cards this year as much as they would have liked for it to be. So I do think some of those things can catch up to a young pitcher. This is incredibly unfortunate. And again, it was a stage grade two issue last time. And effectively, yes, when this happened in Norfolk, right before they were about to call them up two summers ago, and that basically took them out from mid June until the end of September. Yeah. It was, it was three months. Exactly. Beginning in June to beginning of September, we don't know the severity of it. Mike Elias, he joined us at the beginning of this hour. And of course, Grayson is going to undergo some tests, but that wasn't the only roster move that Michael I s executed today, Heston Kerstad. He's placed on the 10 day IL. He was Michael I s told us that he was experiencing some symptoms, not that long after he got options. So they're obviously taking the precautions with him. And Jacob Webb has been placed on the 15 day IL due to right elbow inflammation. They have recalled Brian Baker as well. And Webb was having an extraordinary season under the circumstances and was one of the few relievers who I think you could say was overachieving expectations, but lately his control had waivered and his command and his hard hit rate were going up. And whenever you see that after a prolonged stretch of superior production, you do worry if something is bothering him. And sure enough, it's an elbow howling. So, I mean, at this point, back into the bullpen, we know, I think Knows the preferred closer. Dominguez is the set up guy from the right side. See, you know, Perez is the set up guy from the left side. Kimball's floating. Soto's got to show something or he may already been relegated with Keegan Aiken coming back up. Am I missing anything? Like, I mean, and then it's just a bunch of dudes. Yeah. I'm buying Bert Smith, like I'm buying what I've seen from Bert Smith, but they are really having to patch things up right now. The Orioles lineup just got announced. Colton Cowser is in it, Jason. He's in center field lead off Anthony Santanderin, right batting second gunner Henderson batting third at shortstop. Rhino herm back and left field batting cleanup, Adley Ruchman, your catcher batting fifth Ryan Mountcastle at first batting sixth, Eloy Jimenez, DH again, batting seventh, Jackson Holiday batting eighth that he's at second base and Kobe Mayo back in the starting lineup third base batting ninth and look, the Mayo thing is going to be interesting because we talked to boardy at three o'clock and he kept talking about with Rogers, pitch to contact, pitch to contact. And when Rogers is at his best, he's getting a lot of ground balls. So there could be some action for Kobe Mayo tonight. Remember, he's never played in a dome before. You don't get that in triple A and this is a fast track up there in Toronto. So we're going to continue to see what that looks like. I'm glad he's getting an opportunity tonight after being thrust into what I think we both thought was a fairly untenable situation last night as a pinch hitter. Governor Westmore. He's going to be joining us at the top of the hour. We're going to talk O's and Ravens with him, Ken Wyman's going to rejoin us in the five o'clock hour, he was out at one winning drive and John Harbaugh. He met with the media today as did Ben Cleveland and Roger Rosengarden and John Harbaugh provided an update on Arthur Mallett. Also an interesting comment about could we see starters in the preseason games at some point and we'll see if we can hear from Roger Rosengarden and Ben Cleveland as well. That's next. It's inside access on the fan. We do. He's going to have a scope surgery and a cleanup type of a situation and it'll keep him out for a little while but not long term by any stretch. So we can revisit it when we get close to start the season and talk about. That's John Harbaugh meeting with the media and not that long ago and he pretty much confirmed Cameron Wolf's report this morning saying that Arthur Mallett was going to undergo a scope later this week, Cameron Wolf also said that he expects Mallett to miss some regular season time, maybe all of September. So definitely a blow to that secondary, which is very deep, but Mallett's been one of the big standouts for them during camp and he was coming off a really good year. I mean, look, we're looking for silver linings. It happened early enough that you hope maybe it only bleeds a month or so into the regular season and he's someone who's been around here for a while. And while Zach Orr is making certain tweaks to this defense, I think that Arthur Mallett showed what he can do here last year. And I think it's a fairly refined role. It's a little bit niche and I expect he'll be able to pick up where he leaves off and it's an opportunity to continue to look at our Darius, to continue to look at Armor Davis and see different guys in different spots. The secondary is still a source of great depth right now. We'll see if that continues to be the case. To no surprise, John Harbaugh said that Lamar Jackson will not play in Friday's preseason opener, but Gianna Hahn tweeted this out, covers the Ravens for the banner. John Harbaugh said you will see most of the starters compete in the preseason games, but it probably won't be this one and that kind of breaks the tendency that we've seen from John Harbaugh in recent years ever since that serious injury that JK Dobbins suffered in that Washington preseason game in 2020 we really haven't seen many starters at all. Yeah, most I guess if we're going to be literal means more in this instance, more starters would play at least somewhat than not. I'm not sure I totally buy that. Some of them will have to. Look, yeah, you can't. We don't know who the starter is at certain offensive line spots, like I think we have it. I don't think it's completely open competition everywhere. Like I think it there's a strong lean in a certain way barring somebody really not looking the part in the preseason, but certainly those guys will play. People who are juggling for roles will play, but I, you know, I think there will be a good number of the most well-known Ravens, the guys whose jerseys they sell the most of. I don't think you'll see. Take a single snap. Speaking of those offensive linemen, two guys who will be playing a lot this preseason bank Cleveland and Roger Rosengarden. Let's start with Ben Cleveland, who's been at center. He's been snapping football during Tyler Lindenbaum's absence in bank Cleveland. Hey, he's ready to line up wherever coach needs him and wherever wherever I'm needed. You know, I've seen myself really fitting in wherever, wherever I'm needed. I mean, you know, this, this week I've been playing a little bit more center than other places. And you know, I'm, I'm here to, you know, earn a spot on this team and wherever they need me out to do that, that's, that's what I'm going to do. Definitely a surprise seeing him snapping the football and look, the Ravens, they love versatility across their offensive line. Heading into training camp, we kept bringing up the idea, hey, could we see Ben Cleveland's heavy Ben powers trajectory? And that has not taken place so far, but the more you can do it, I'll tell you what else they love. And it's been sort of our off season motif. They love big people. They love heavy personnel. And you go from a smaller leverage starting center to, and I don't know how much this will stick, but what is this cat? Six, six. He's big boy. How many times? How many six, six centers? He's like, they like big people. And at least for this Friday game where no, we're not going to see Derek Henry and I don't think we'll see Pat Ricard and some other other big people like we'll see Kohler, but like they might have a lot of beef out there. Like imagine this guy and filele at one of the guard spots. They want to throw big A in the mix, right? Like your tackles are always big no matter who you put there. There could be a lot of beef. We talk on this show about preseason gal fake football, but these are real big time games for a ton of this roster. And especially the rookies, you have Roger Rosengarten. This is his, you know, first NFL game like experience, it's not a regular season game, of course, but Rosengarten's ready to put on the Ravens uniform in Hellman. Yeah, man. It feels great. It feels amazing. I'm kind of just going through rookie minicamp OTAs and just the spring practices to now you finally get to training camp. I mean, it's super exciting. It's a feeling that I've dreamt since I was a little kid and now I'm going to play my first NFL game here coming up. So all good angst, you know, I'm super excited and I can't wait. The score ultimately doesn't matter, but no, this game means not anymore, but not anymore. This game means a ton for the entire rookie class in Hell. Major Voorhees hasn't been on a football field in 18 months. No, there'll be a lot of individuals who are taking a sort of unique perspective on this game and who it will certainly resonate more for them. And their film, what they put on tape will resonate more for them. That's some other guys. No doubt about it. 515. Ken Wyman. He'll be. Maybe. Maybe not. Bone, what time did I make it back yesterday from a real full practice? I think I was in the building a little after 4.30. You were? Came at the end of your interview with Todd and was right back in the studio. We're ready to go. What time is it now? I mean, I know you're not the traffic guy, but Ken might be running in traffic. He said he was caught behind some buses. So funny how that works. We might have Ken at the top of the hour. We definitely will have Maryland's governor, Westmore, who, man, has he been busy recently at breaking around commanders camp, Terps, part in the Terps practice. And I think he was at the Naval Academy the other day. He's been all over the place. We'll get the latest. We're governor Westmore and this is a busy, busy time for the Baltimore sports calendar right now. Ravens and training camp Orioles a couple months, less than two months to go in the regular season. Terps getting ready to go and we'll get Westmore's thoughts on all of that next on the fan.
