We're done a little early today at 530 BBT. It'll be Mike Boric and yours truly. And we'll get a look at some more of the Trevor Rodgers, baby trade. He's submitting acquisitions and joining us now, Kiley McDangle who covers MLB farm system for ESPN. And Kiley, let's start with the O's in your opinion. Did they do enough at the trade deadline? I'm here to eat some valuable sports radio innings. I'm going to go with yes. I think they did enough. I think they could have done more. Obviously, you'd love to see. I mean, I don't know how you guys feel about this, but Jack Flaherty, a degree to scuba or crochet could be prided out of where they were. But getting Efland and Rodgers, I think, give them enough. You'd like to see more. Maybe the soft season, you'll see more of the Corbin Burns on the way out the door, at least free to see maybe somewhere else. That I think is the question, but with, you know, means and braddish and some of those guys and Bapista, like on the way back like there might be enough that this could be fine this year and next year without having to do anything drastic. I just, Kiley, can't help have my head flash forward to October and what we've seen of Kimbrel. And, you know, Soto, I think he's a lefty lefty guy period. Like, if he's got a pitch and hole inning, if there's pinch hitters from the right side involved, that's trouble. Even Dominguez, like, I don't know that he's going to close. I don't know that you want canoe closing. And I don't like, is the ninth inning going to be their bugga bill? I mean, you would like to go into the playoffs feeling like the Padres do. Like, we have four closer level guys. They have obviously other problems. He's like to say, we got enough starting pitching. We got enough stars in the lineup. We got enough guys in the bullpen. It may or may not work, but we feel good about it. Their obviously is a hesitation. Is there quite enough, you know, after you get past Burns and then whichever reliever is going hot at the time, maybe for preparation, Rodriguez, in there, maybe through effort in there. But I think the teams that win the world seriously, if you look at the, you know, the Philly teams that we've seen of the past, where there's multiple aces, multiple relief aces. Like, that's kind of what you want. I don't think the Orioles are at that level. And obviously last year's experience in the playoffs makes you think like, Oh, we have to overwhelm it with talent. We can't just go with what works in the regular season. I think that was more of a one off of fluke, you know, team that hadn't been the playoffs, you know, some bad luck, et cetera. I think this team will do better. But yes, they could have done more. Also, I remind you of a conversation I had with the executive weeding up to the deadline where I was asking, what do you think Baltimore is going to do? And he's like, they can't really change their stripes. Like, they haven't been an overdo it, trade a bunch of prospects, make the big splashy move team. This entire time Michael has been there, except for the Corbin Burns move. That's been the one move where it's been, Hey, let's push and chips in. And there hasn't really been another one. And it's all kind of worked out in the big picture. And we're about to get to that point where you have to show the results in the playoffs. And I guess this will be another important data point is how it works out this year. That's exactly where I was going to go, Kylie, where now we've seen Michael Iis at two trade deadlines being buyers. And it's a more measured approach. And he's held on to all of his top guys. Do you expect to see that each year, you know, him being reluctant to push his chips to the center of the table? I think so, because that if you look and think back to when he was in Houston, obviously not the guy in charge, they had to push the chips in to get a rental price harper that didn't end up happening. I believe that one was mixed by ownership, if I'm remembering correctly. But that was like the one time they had made that big move in Houston. And I've seen a version of it here in Atlanta. I used to obviously work with the Braves. And so I was there with a lot of those prospects. And we saw it out in Southwest, not make bold moves because he had all these prospects coming up and didn't want to give away the one that turns into the dude. And so we held on to everybody, didn't make the trade for a real new toe or a crassail or yellowish. These big guys that all came up didn't make a huge reagent signing. And then once the farm system dried out, then he had to start making bolder moves. That's when he won the World Series, when he started making some bolder moves at that deadline, we added like four hitters and stuff kind of worked out. Because I think there is something, whether it's clubhouse chemistry or the team can tell that you care or, you know, just sort of a tangible thing, when you push the chips in your eyes, go out. There's not a lot of teams that have tried to straddle and be good for three different years at the same time. And then win a World Series. It just doesn't happen. I can't totally explain why, but it doesn't happen. And I kind of wonder if they're looking at, hey, what we got braddish, we got memes, we got Batista, we got Westburg all coming back, we got holiday, Mayo, Bassio, you know, Povitch, we got all these guys here. Let's wait until next year when they're all here. And then maybe we don't need that anybody. But that typically, I can't think of it as one World Series doing that. So maybe you're going to have to wait a year or two for that to play out. And also, for the record, this will be published later in a week or two at ESPN.com. They still have the number one farm system in baseball. Like, like, it's not like this is going to end tomorrow. They don't have to solve it right now. I think that might be a bit of a blessing and a curse is that they don't have to push their chips in. And they have so many chips that they're just not doing it. And just going to see if they can do it anyway. Where are you on the future of this farm system, though, Kylie? Because you got Jackson holiday, Kobe Mayo, Samuel Bessile, three guys, consensus, top 15 prospects across the board. I mean, Jackson's going to graduate, you would think by the end of the season, Mayo, not far behind. When a couple of those guys graduate, where do you foresee this farm system ranking? Well, so the way I do the rankings, but let's just say Mayo and holiday graduate tomorrow, which obviously won't happen. But eventually they will. That would take them from first, but a pretty good lead down to roughly average, like 15, give or take. And still have a long track record. I think Bessile will probably be a year behind those guys. They still have a long track record of finding guys, especially hitters in the middle to later rounds, turning them into dudes, doing well with trades. Like, they are a machine that has been producing talent. And this is like the crest. When those three guys come up to join everyone that's here, that's like the weight where you have like a five-year window before those guys start turning down extensions and getting close to free agency. And you got to start making choices. We'll find out if ownership wants to run the payroll up, which I'm sure there will be a limit to where that will go. You've now opened that window with all of these sort of home run hits and draft and free agency and trades and things like that. So then the question will be, can they build it up while competing from an average farm system, let's say the middle of next year, to then being top 10 again and doing the version of what the Dodgers are doing, but without the payroll. Because I think that will be the big difference is they can't then, or could, probably won't then go add. Mookie that's Freddy Freeman, Yamamoto, Otani, on top of what was already a good team and a well-paid team. I would imagine that that move is not going to be there at the end. Can you do it internally? And we've seen teams like Tampa, or maybe just Tampa, you know, one kind of does it here and there with even smaller payrolls. But they are typically not actually competing for the World Series every year. The way that we've seen, you know, the peak of the Yankees recently with the Dodgers, like those teams don't actually make it all the way because, again, they're doing that thing where they're trying to be good every year for the next five years, rather than trying to be good one year. And I think somewhat paradoxically, you kind of have to take one or the other. And I think that decision will be forced probably two years from now. Well, Kylie, when we drill down on what they did do, and I'm someone who loves minor league baseball, and I love monitoring prospects and watching prospects, but I don't believe in hoarding prospects. So I've been pushing them to go bigger. Like when you look at what they did, I love the Efland deal. I don't think they're going to fix Rogers, but whatever, Norby and Star Wars had no future here. The one that the only one that gave me Paul's and it and it's similar last year where I throw in Zach Showalter in that deal for Flaherty. I didn't like Seth Johnson. And I know he hasn't thrown more than 69 pitches in an outing. And I know he's already on the 40 man. And I know it's hard to build a guy up who missed that much time. But people are killing Dombrowski for trading the two high arms he did to get a legitimate closer. And I'm like, well, his starting staff is loaded. And then he brings back Seth Johnson for a lefty lefty guy who they didn't even like in Philadelphia anymore. Like, I don't know, like the Seth Johnson of it for Soto, that's the one where I'm like, from a prospect standpoint, I don't, I think they paid too high a price. That was surprising because Seth Johnson was a guy I really like going back to his draft years when Tampa had him to when Baltimore grabbed him coming off TJ. And like you said, he's on the 40 man hasn't thrown a lot of innings. He was also like a converted shortstop to pitcher that had been built up and then had a TJ. So he had a long period where he just didn't throw it very much. So building him up to where he is a 150 ending starting pitching asset is still going to take a few more years. He's not pitching great this year. I think that was something that we've seen teams like Tampa and the Yankees and the Dodgers have, which is a 40 man crunch, where you end up with too many guys that you would then lose in the goal five draft. So then the week before everyone has to add their players to the 40 man roster, this is, you know, a sort of convoluted explanation for if your system is too deep with good players, at some point you'll end up with too many of them. And so I think that was a little bit of what they were doing there is clearing out a little bit of the depth of the second tier guys that are probably not going to be into impact types. And then also managing the 40 man a little bit. I am not worried about any of these guys. I have counter Norby is the best prospect they traded. And I think, you know, you guys are probably aware. He's a fine player, probably what would be also call a role five. A low end starter flash, you know, good player. Like could he be Chris Taylor someday? That's like his best case scenario. I don't think he'll be that. So I think he's a good player. And then I think the three players for Ethel and I think Horvath and Bo Meister both could be good, but I wouldn't count on them being impact guys. These holiday, Mayo, Bassio, Gunnar Henderson, like these dudes are different. Like those are the guys you build around. These are the depth guys. If you trade 10 of them, one or two of them are going to hurt. They've traded now like five or six of them. I don't think it's going to hurt. But if they do it a couple more years in a row, there's going to be a guy that hurts a little bit. But Baltimore also has like the best group of just young players 25 under in all of baseball. This is again the thing that happened in Atlanta. The last couple years were now that's dried up a bit. But they had such a crazy run of talent, all signing extensions that you basically have to have all of these guys get hurt in one year, which is what just happened to not be a threat to be like one of the top three teams in the National League. And I think that's the kind of run Baltimore's about to go on. So I would say prepare yourself that we're finding things to complain about the pretty small things. It's going pretty well. He's Kyla McDaniel, baseball insider for ESPN. Kylie, thanks so much for tuning us. Yeah. I ate the mittens and I talked to you guys off the watch. You didn't bother me. Thank you so much. You close that sector. You close that sector. Close it out. Complete game. Some might say. Yes. Hellbell, play it for me. Thank God. Thank you. Coming up next, we're going to hit the hot corner. Jordan Westbrook, he is done for a while. Maybe they get him back prior to the regular season, but no promises there. What? Who could fill the void there? It's a two one shot for Jordan Westbrook. Westbrook's got a right hand fracture. It's uh we're not sure the timetable on his return but hopefully by the end of the regular season I'll start player. So it's an enders a part of the game. We have to we have to pick up the pieces for him. We've got to play well. Huge part of our lineup, our culture, really everything. He's just he's right in the middle of everything and so we have to have other guys kind of step up in his place and and fill the void. Such a total gut punch of news yesterday following the Orioles win over the Blue Jays. Jordan Westbrook, the fractured right hand, no timetable for his return and to tell you the rise of this young player. I mean we can go back to spring training Jason where we didn't know okay maybe Kobe Mayo could be up by Memorial Day. Maybe Jordan Westbrook is just keeping the seat warm type thing ends up being a super utility guy. This guy was a phenomenal player for them this season to the point where he made an all-star team to the point where he is their clutches player and the numbers back it up. Numbers with runners in scoring position 931 OPS runners in scoring position two outs 877 late and close situations. OPS of over 1250 1250 their clutches player and add some struggles defensively at second base but third base of very solid glove. That is a big big blow to this lawn. The reality is he was going to be playing third base exclusively for the most part except for maybe when there's against the tough left and he moves to second for Jackson. Even that wouldn't have to be the case but yeah I mean he was starting I think it was going to be even more sort of singular like the left side of the infield is going with Jackson Holiday seemingly here for the foreseeable future was going to be Gunnar Henderson and Jordan Westbrook. Yeah it sucks and knowing what a grinder he is and and how much he wants this and to be taken out of this pennant race and frankly to have it be so nebulous as to exactly when he's going to return and a hand can be really tricky and is he gripping the bat normally and how long you miss two months best case scenario how long does it take to get tuned back up. It sucks for them. It sucks for him and in the meantime we're going to see a whole lot of Ramon and maybe at some point we will see Kobe Mayo and they've got Levon Soto to now spell Gunnar Henderson at shortstop because he's the only other guy I think they would trust there. I can't imagine them putting that back on Jackson Holiday's plate now although they ask a whole lot of their young players a lot of the time that would seem to be extreme. That's why Soto is here. Orioles announced a bunch of moves including Soto they have activated Eloy Jimenez Trevor Rogers who gets the start tonight Austin Slater they were called Levon Soto from triple A uh Heston cursed dad Keegan Aiken they were both options Jordan Westbrook officially placed on the 10 day IL and the O's DFA Christian Pasha look we talked a lot about in the immediate aftermath of this injury what the trickle down effect was going to be and we figured they would fight to get something to get Eloy Jimenez at least on the roster and if they were going to do that there was seemingly no way for them to do that that wouldn't calls Heston cursed dad another guy with glove issues to go down um he didn't get that much more of a run this time than last you think back to that Yankee series and the form he was in when he got earholed and that and the all-star break kind of threw everything off and then the roster chaos that's ensued now um he and O'Hern are are are the redundant so I don't know what that means for next year to the Kobe Mayo of it all we were wondering is he going to be in the lineup yesterday for Norfolk he was and he was at third base yeah I don't think you'll see him at first base anymore Matt Ryan Mount Castle is here after the trade deadline and he'll be back to Mayo at third until he eventually gets up here um I I'm going to be fascinated to see how much of a run Eloy Jimenez and this is a super limited baseball player again 60% of his contact has been ground balls like the league average is 42 that's obscene like he's got power but we haven't seen it in a long time he can't run and he can't field anywhere not even first base it is a pure softball slopich DH model that you're getting from him from an athletic standpoint I don't know bone um I don't think that's why Kobe mayo's not here I think there's probably big picture contractual control uh rookie of the year contention stuff that they're looking at for next year um but let's be real Ramon has looked terrible at third base terrible and if he picks up today where he left off and that second game against Toronto the double header then you're gonna have to start seeing Soto at third base because you got at least catch the ball if you're not gonna hit or hit consistently then you got at least catch the ball and with like let's just be real about their infield defense right now the kid at second base has played second base 45 times in the minors the shortstop is having all kinds of issues on routine plays right now and the third baseman I don't care about his gold glove has not been good there in a long time we're gonna get back into the O's at the top of the hour Ryan Ripkin will be joining us he of course part of our Baltimore baseball tonight coverage but coming up next we're gonna get into the Ravens into the NFL Aaron Shatz so he's the Chiefs analytics officer at FTN fantasy he's got his FTN football almanac 2024 out we will preview it and we'll talk Ravens where do they stand in Aaron's viewpoint in the AFC is he concerned about this Ravens offensive line we'll hear from Aaron next on the fan we've really been bearing the lead today Jason the NFL's back tonight big game tonight huge game the Hall of Fame game is tonight and we are eight days away from the Ravens hosting the Eagles in their preseason opener football is back the streak's over though it's not the same it's not the same it is not the same at all but joining us now is Aaron Shatz chief analytics officer of FTN fantasy he's got a book out FTN football almanac 2024 and Aaron we got to start with the local team the Ravens they of course lost in the AFC championship against the Chiefs underwent a lot of changes had a ton of unrestricted free agents where do the Ravens stand in the AFC right now for you I still have the Ravens at the top of the AFC a difficult AFC with a lot of good teams they're not that far ahead of Kansas City but they were so far ahead in our numbers last year because of their regular season wins just huge wins over good opponents dominating teams like San Francisco and Detroit and Miami that even when you account for the changes on the offensive line and the changes on defense and the laws of Mike McDonald it still comes out that Baltimore looks like a very good all-around team that we have slightly ahead of Kansas City the other thing to remember is it's a weird year for special teams because of the new kickball yeah but you can always kind of depend on Baltimore's special teams to be consistently near the top of the league and you can't really depend on any other team to be like that so that gives them a little bit of an extra bonus in your expectations because it's something you can count on that you can't count on with anyone else how do you guys perceive the the Bengals like before Joe burrow got hurt um the defense was slipping but you kind of wondered if it was maybe a bit of a of a blip or anarumos been so good can he figure stuff out in the second half and then in the second half it's kind of a cluster right like they they can't really control the ball the way they did the backup quarterback runs around and makes some plays but the whole thing kind of you know it was what it was it wasn't their year now burrows back but are we sure the defense is that much better like how good are the Bengals no i'm not sure the defense is that much better but last year's Bengals played one of the 10 hardest schedules of the last 40 years by our numbers and this year their projected schedule ranks 27 it is a huge change in schedule strength for the Cincinnati Bengals so they will look like they have improved even if they haven't improved and i do think you have to feel you know even though Browning played fairly well last year you do have to feel like a healthy burrow is gonna play better and their offense will improve and the whole way i've seen north is so intriguing to me because i don't really know what to make of the Steelers and their quarterback situation then Cleveland who had a historic defense last year at home and a horrible defense on the road and of course it's always about the Sean Watson how do you see those two teams as we're a month or so away from week one well as far as the Browns go those kinds of home road splits do not carry over from here to here so what matters is that their defense was very good and they have basically all the players back so there's really no expectation that their defense shouldn't be one of the best in the league again and i have no idea what to expect from the Sean Watson at this point but i do think that after a year and a half we have to accept he's this guy and not that guy from four years ago like he's the average he's not he's not like a top quarterback but they're going to have a top defense Pittsburgh i think is going to decline in particular on defense i think this is the end of the Mike Tomlin streak without a losing season you know it's still the best division in the game so Pittsburgh's better than any other divisions fourth place right but third or fourth place team wowzers uh the bill's still the team to beat in in the AFC east and and if so is it even close we have a neck and neck with Miami okay the bills have the hardest projected schedule in the league there are three games that are different from the rest of the AFC east are Baltimore Kansas City and Detroit that is a hard three games to play especially when the other AFC east teams get to pick on much easier AFC West opponents than Kansas City so Buffalo should still be strong and we despite the questions about their ride receiver room and the questions about the safety combination without player and high Miami should also be really good i think they have an average defense but they should have one of the top offenses in the league and you can trust the McDaniel system at Tyree Hill so i think those two teams are neck and neck we're speaking to Aaron Shatz chief's analytics officer of FTN fantasy it's inside access on the fan Aaron one team that i know Jason and i differ about heading into this year and granted that some news injury news about Justin Herbert coming out Jim Harbaugh wins everywhere and i expect him to win with the chargers just not this year i'm fading them this year how does your model see them i'm with you it really is a rebuilding year when you look at their roster there's the wide receiver room is pretty bad there's the running backs are guys with injury histories they're depending a lot on a rookie right tackle there's issues with the defense the edge rushers are older like it just seems like a real rebuilding year for harmonic get his system and his people in place and i'm not expecting great big things from the this season Aaron i've talked myself into the Colts as a team i think could be um better than we've come to expect and i'm i'm sort of buying the hype there with a huge caveat that they keep that quarterback somewhat healthy are there a few teams that you guys in your model you found we're pretty close to now like the the regular season a lot of preview stuff is out are there a few teams that you find that you guys are higher on than maybe most and and then alternate alternately are there some teams that you feel like the public or or others in the projection business are too high on well the Colts are actually a team that we think that the public is too high on they were lower in our numbers than their record last year they have very little in the secondary other than Kenny Moore and you cannot expect Anthony Richardson to be good he's effectively a rookie and you have to expect rookie quarterbacks on average will be bad they could be good we could be very wrong but your most likely outcome is that their offense will not be good team that i'm higher on than everybody else is the New Orleans Saints interesting that is because the New Orleans Saints are very very boring yeah you don't think about them ever and people have confused boring with bad but they're not bad they're average they're boringly dullingly average with a very easy schedule in an easy division where we're not as high on Atlanta as the market and therefore we have the Saints slightly ahead of Tampa Bay as the best team in the NFC South remember they're bringing in a Clint Kubiak as offensive coordinator so they're going to be running one of those Shanahan system that helps offensive so they're not going to be terrible they're just going to be boring he's Aaron Schatz chief analytics officer for FTN fantasy Aaron before we let you go tell our audience how they can get your new book FTN football almanac 2024 yeah it's a 450 page season preview with chapters about all the teams comments about all the fantasy players award-winning fantasy projections all kinds of advanced stats go to FTN fantasy dot com slash almanac or go to Amazon for the physical copy and search for FTN football almanac 2024 football is back call a fame game tonight Aaron i'm sure we will be talking to you throughout the season all right man tyson badge in action yes hey bears first half money line set up before i'll say it again i am never been uh three seasons back i'm not saying but the house in it occasionally i'm gonna do it i'm taking the first house tonight i'll go into now that Jason said i keep guys are ridiculous it's right what do you know what do you just said there why it'll be fun watching the o's game well that's why i'm gonna watch the o's game but this will at least give me a reason to check the score this game starts at eight though it'll be only i guess like 640 oh yeah football yeah football game fine does it start to like 815 by the time they actually kick off that's fair that's a fair point ryan rifkin's going to be joining us at the top of the hour we'll get ryan's reaction to the trade deadline the unfortunate jordan wesberg injury news but coming up next to purple rain justice ill and your voice patrick mccary they all met with the media and patrick mccary he's this six man but he's in a contract year i'm sure part of him he wants to play and he talked about it the podium we'll hear the sound next on the fan we're getting better every day you know it's it's early in camp uh there's there's guys shining um and there's work being done uh there's it's so early uh but i i think we're heading in the right direction and there's only up to go so i think we're gonna be pretty damn good that's patrick mccary on the current state of the offensive line where there's three positions up for grabs and we don't know who's leading it chason i mean we don't know who's lining up with not even people at practice aren't even allowed to say who played where although occasionally it does trickle out some people might go rogue every now and then yeah but like such such such huge proprietary information as the second round kid they took to play right tackle is playing right tackle yeah he is and mccary who he's played all five positions at some point in his nfl career jason and we know the ravens view him as a six man but he also said today at the podium i want to play and he's been getting paid fairly well to be this six man but he's entering a contract year so that is an interesting situation i don't think he's actually in competition for anything i think they like him where he is they trust him in a bunch of different places and if somehow you know rosen garden doesn't win right tackle i don't think it's going to be because they went with mccary as the week one starter instead i think ronnie stanley is their left tackle until at some point his regular season performance reaches a point they're not comfortable with in which case mccary probably is i guess the next guy up in the interim have we wrapped up somebody younger than that who maybe could be our swing tackle because you never know if one of these young guards doesn't look up to it then mccary slides there as well so they're they're the pecking order and the the depth chart of it all with the offensive line um will be i'll be very intrigued to see how that plays out one of those young guards that some ravens fans of people expecting to nail down one of the starting guard positions is andrew voorhees who had a red shirt ear last year after getting heard at the combine and he was thankful the ravens took a chance on i mean it was an investment for sure right just not knowing with with my injury and it being so uh late in the process in reference to have the whole the whole draft process um so yeah it was it was beyond grateful when when i got the call from mccary costa and the baltimore ravens decided to to select me as one of their choices um again they they poured into me all last year and i gave them everything i had and uh just felt like the the foundation that i built for myself and and just the belief and in the work ethic i had uh with with everyone on staff in our weight room in our our training room and even our position coaches and stuff just felt like it it always paid dividends uh and i'm forever indebted and grateful to this organization for believing in me giving me a shot i given my circumstances or he's very thankful yeah the ravens took a shot on him because remember they traded back into the seventh round to select him knowing that he was going to have zero impact for them as a rookie but this was someone that was seen as a possible day two draft pick that they got in the seventh round now he's fully healthy and they're hoping he can nail down one of these starting spots well and look when you do something like that um it's because you don't want to also get in a situation where he's going to be a prior even knowing it's a red shirt year kid with that kind of upside as a priority free agent you don't want to have to shuck and jive those negotiations are so tricky that a lot of teams most teams don't exactly abide by the letter of the law but when you're supposed to start talking to them and their agents and deals there's back room deals and things that are done before the draft starts that are in people's back pockets it's a nasty game and if you could take a kid of that caliber who you think has starting potential in the NFL and just go ahead and get him in the seventh round even though you know he's not going to play because you don't want to go through all those shenanigans for him and just retain his rights it's it's a smart maneuver and it may pay off in a really big way uh for them this year
