(upbeat music) We've made it to Tuesday. Good to have you with us here on the radio. I'm Eric Carpenter, and this is K-C-V-L, K-C-R-K. We never got the thunder and lightning on Monday, but hey, we had a sprinkle or two come through. We actually had a little bit of precipitation, not even really a trace, but most areas around Colville got a little bit of rain yesterday. Well, things are going to start to cool down just a little bit. We're gonna look at that weather forecast, that coming up in just a little bit. Let's get an update here from the Kettle Falls school district about athletics. Greg Mace gives us an update on the new staff and some very important dates and more. We're getting toward the start of school. - Hello, my name is Greg Mace. I'm coming into this new role into Kettle Falls. I've spent the last 14 years in Colville as a teacher and a coach. I'm super excited to come to Kettle Falls as an assistant principal and an athletic director and the new head football coach. I couldn't be more excited because I graduated from Kettle Falls. I was born and raised in Kettle Falls. It's an awesome community and I'm just so excited to be able to come home and be a part of it. Athletics just as far as what's been going on over the summer, we've had a lot of teams that have been working incredibly hard. Our Legion team has been playing some single A ball. They played all summer long and did really well. They competed really hard. I know our basketball program was playing a ton of games this year. They had a great year last year trying to build off of that a little bit. Our volleyball program is running some camps and our wrestling has been in the gym working really hard. So, you know, just all of our sports are putting in the work in the off season, trying to get better. Also, as an athletic department, we've been trying to find coaches. We've had a lot of openings and so we've been doing some interviews. We currently just hired a new girl soccer coach. We're bringing in a young guy named Skyler Moore. He's been a JV soccer coach at North Central. We're really excited about bringing him in. We think he's gonna do some great things. We had a cheer coach opening. We hired Rachel Meyer, who was previously our tennis coach and did a really great job for us. She's a teacher at the high school, so she's gonna get to be around our kids on an everyday basis and she's got a lot of experience in competitive cheer, so that's a really good thing. And then we had a head job opening for football. We didn't have a lot of applicants for that and I ended up interviewing for that job and I have a lot of experience doing that in Colville. Man, I'm super excited about taking that rollover as well. Fall sports, our start date is August 21st and that's the start date for football. What's kind of going on in our district right now is the system we've always used for signing kids up has been family ID and we are changing systems in going to final forms, which is kind of the system that everybody uses in our state. And so that's kind of been a process for us to switch over and we are gonna get that out to people for athletes to sign up. And once they do that, they're gonna be able to sign up and participate in sports. So once again, that first date is August 21st and then all of the other fall sports are August 26th. We try to encourage kids to get their physicals obviously before the sports season starts so they're not missing practices or anything like that. That's always something where kids show up and it's like, oh, I forgot to get my physical per whatever it is, trying to get all of those things taken care of before the season starts so that we can just kind of hit the ground running. And we're gonna be super excited to welcome all those kids in and get going. - All right, the first day of fall sports for Kettle Falls August 21st. And of course, as always, we'll be bringing you high school sports on the radio this year on K-C-V-L and K-C-R-K. - The wait is over. Saunders Furniture is rolling out the red carpet for you. It is consistent with the guidance of the state's wolf conservation management plan. The department of fish and wildlife has documented three, confirmed and one probable wolf depredation event in that pack territory resulting in two dead and two injured livestock since June 28th, all attributed to the lead point pack. The Fish and Wildlife staff had discussed the recent depredations by the lead point wolf pack and the associated effectiveness of the non-lethal deterrence tools by the affected livestock producers. They have determined that range riding occurred on a daily and near daily basis along with other human presence. Despite that, the staff believes the depredations will likely continue given recent pack behavior. The director agreed and has authorized the lethal removal that will run through August 19th. That's when they'll enter into an evaluation period. The lethal removal operation may be extended if additional depredations are documented. This lead point pack, the same pack that last week Fish and Wildlife declined to use lethal removal but now they have authorized up to two adult wolves from the lead point wolf pack to be eliminated. Well, now that the Paris Olympics have come to an end, the on again, off again relationship between the Olympics and Major League Baseball is heading toward another reconciliation in 2028. That leads to a lot of discussion of what the rosters could look like. Commissioner Rob Manfred said he was open to the possibility of Major Leaguers participating but recent history suggests some obstacles. Baseball was dropped after the 2008 games, returned in 2021 in Japan, then was left out of this year's Olympics in Paris. The sport returns for the Los Angeles games four years from now at the Tokyo Olympics, Major League Baseball only allowed players, not on 40 man rosters to play and teams additionally blocked many eligible prospects. The potential health risk is real, a point further driven home by Edwin Diaz, season ending injury at the 2023 World Baseball Classic. So in 2021, the US team was led by a few familiar names, a couple of intriguing youngsters and a mix. Well, it created a little bit of buzz. One possible compromise would be for teams to keep active Major Leaguers out of the Olympics, but permit top prospects who haven't yet reached the majors to go. The event would resemble the all star futures game, but it would go for the whole tournament. We'll see what works out between Major League Baseball and the Olympics. Talking about baseball, the Seattle Mariners return to play this afternoon. They open the three game series at Detroit, three game starts at 2.30, first pitch at 3.40. They Seattle Mariners and the Detroit Tigers, that'll be on 92.1 KCRK. It's a nine game road trip, three at Detroit, three games at Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates and then three games with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The first full weekend of NFL exhibition games featuring the new dynamic kickoffs included two long returns, a significant drop in touchbacks and mass confusion on an odd play that ended up as a safety. The NFL goal of increasing the rate of returns and bringing back the threat of big plays mostly accomplished last weekend. The NFL reported 81% of the kicks were returned so far this preseason. Even if the teams have been a bit guarded in what they're willing to show before the start of the regular season. Everybody's been pretty much vanilla in the preseason. Everybody's still trying to understand the new rules as evidenced by what happened to the Kansas City Chiefs. They tried to down a ball for a touchback. Only to have it ruled as a safety. The playing question came late in the first half of Kansas City's game at Jacksonville. Cam Little's kickoff for Jacksonville landed in the front of the end zone before bouncing back into the field of play. Well, McColl-Hardman raced back and kneeled in the end zone before picking up the ball at the one yard line and bringing it back over the goal line. Well, under the old NFL rules, kickoffs that landed in the end zone led to an automatic touchback. Not that way with the new rules. Well, there are three preseason NFL games this year. Game number two, that'll be coming up Saturday. We'll have the Seattle Seahawks on K-C-V-L.
