The Atlanta Braves mean while won their second straight against the Giants. So now, all of a sudden, the Mets are two games back of the Braves in the wildcard race and it's starting to feel like this thing is getting away from them. The ball is starting to roll downhill in the wrong direction and you got to get yourself, you know, with your feet planted, start pushing that ball back up the mountain, that boulder, and try to get back to winning ways. But it just feels like a team that's just lost it. And it's tough when you're starting to put you in a hole. And that's what happened in this game. Paul Blackburn ends up giving up seven runs across the first three innings of the game. And at that point, you're fighting a losing battle, clearly. But this had to be a game, even with the deficit, where the Mets showed some grit and got back into it. Because they had opportunities in this game. They were 4 for 17 with Rhodes in scoring position. As a team, they left 11 runners on. Yeah, they got nine hits and they drew five walks. They had opportunities. And look, you can look at each individual hitter in the whole situation and say, you know, a couple balls didn't fall, whatever it is, but you can't make excuses for this team anymore. Because they have been on a consistent decline ever since, and I hate to bring it up like this, but that's what it feels like. Kodai Sengo went down, which is crazy because he had no real bearing on what got the Mets into this position, right? Into a chance to win this year. Sengo's on the aisle the whole season. But there was a feeling in City Field, the night that Sengo took the mound, that the Mets had done the heavy lifting and they got their ace back for the stretch run. And it goes down and it's so eerily similar to Edwin Diaz last year, where sort of a freak injury happens and you try to downplay, you try to push it aside, say, oh, it's not a big deal. You know, last year, okay, you got David Roberts and other guys can step up. How much value does a closer have this year? You say, oh, well, Kodai Sengo, sure, he was going to be the Mets' ace on the stretch, but you haven't had them all year and you're going to be just fine. You make a trade for Paul Blackburn and everything's going to work out. And Kodai Sengo would only pitch one out of every six days. He wouldn't be batting for this team. He wouldn't be pitching late games for the bullpen, helping them not blow games to the Angels. None of that would have really been fixed by having Kodai Sengo. But there was something about the significance of that injury. Or just, I don't know what it did to this team as far as just a mental, uh, told that it took on them, not to mention you combine it with not making the big, big splash of the deadline. I don't know. Something has changed and it could just be a rough stretch. I'm sure that's what the players would say. But it feels like this team has been pressing for multiple weeks and not getting where they need to. And in a night where you actually did get some offense, you score four runs, you get nine hits, five walks, you put traffic on the bases. You were in a hole before the game even got going. Paul Blackburn gives it three runs in the first inning. Didn't have his command, didn't look good. And, you know, even when you start to get back, you make it three, one in the second. All right. Paul Blackburn could have held it down, got the mess through five innings, only 11 of those three runs. That would have been a nice start. Third inning, he gives up four. Now Jose Iglesias, mid and error in that inning. A ball that hits off his glove. That should have at least been a force out of third. And who knows? I think he had it in his mind. Try to turn two on that play. That's a mistake that's not Blackbird's fault that comes back to haunt the Mets. That's a run score is there. And then all of a sudden you end up with a three run homer up the bat of Shay Langoliers. And it's seven one athletics through three. But it really is just one of those things where just everything that can go wrong will go wrong for the Mets right now. And the Braves have now won a couple of games in a row. So you had a situation where the Mets were flipping back and forth with the Braves for that third wild card spot for a while. And now Atlanta is starting to what we call it surge. But they found a way to win a couple of games against the team in the Giants. That's right in the thick of this race as well. Good news on that front is the Giants aren't any closer to the Mets. But the Braves are further away. And the difference between the Braves and the Mets is the fact that the Braves have winning tendencies to fall back on. The amount of things that have gone wrong for the Braves this year. And yet they still can put it together for seven weeks. And be in a playoff spot. I wouldn't even shocked that the Braves caught the Phillies because the Phillies aren't a bit of a free fall as well. Braves are six games back. It just feels like the Braves are inevitable. And that's the team that you're fighting with right now. And we have not seen the version of the Mets. That was the best team in baseball for two months. In this game, the Mets had their chances. They could have had a remarkable victory where they battled back from down seven to one. Bottom of the third inning, Francisco Lindor lead off double doesn't score. Bottom of the fourth inning, Jeff McNeil lead off double doesn't score. That's two runs right there that should have come in. Bottom of the fifth inning, the Mets do rally and score some runs. Francisco Lindor lead off it. Brandon Emo draws a walk. Jesse Winker doubles in Lindor. Peter Lanzo catches in both Winker and Nemo with the base it. All right, the Mets are rolling. Mark Vientos draws a walk, and then Jeff McNeil comes up before he gets the bat. Austin Adams comes out of the bullpen to replace Joe Boyle. Now, I want to mention Joe Boyle has an era over seven this year and the Mets didn't do enough against them. I will also note that this kind of throws way harder than I expected and has better stuff than the stats was to just. But ultimately, you're in a position to make Boyle look even worse and have a really bad line because he left a couple runners on having already given up four runs. Jeff McNeil starts with that a bag against Austin Adams with a 3-0 count. He ends up striking out. And if you remember the name Austin Adams, I loved him in spring training. We talked about him a lot before the season. I thought he was going to make the team as a minor league signing. The Mets end up trading him to the A's as he wasn't going to make the roster. He said a really nice year and he had a lot to say after he struck out, not just Jeff McNeil, but Francisco Alvarez to end that inning. He did the OMG celebration. He then was shouting expletives and it was a lot. A lot for a player that never actually suited up for the Mets. And I get it. These guys got to find the chip on your shoulder however you can get it. And it's probably what makes him as good as he's been this year. Having a little bit of that, but after showing the Mets up the way he did, you'd have liked to see this team rally and make him and the A's look bad, but they couldn't do it. It just could not come through. Jose Budo gives up two runs in a second inning of work to make that score just a little bit worse. And those two runs came right after the Mets scored theirs in the fifth. So again, you need to have those shut down innings after your score. The Mets could not accomplish that. And ultimately you just look at four for seven, two throws in scoring position and 11 men left on base as a team. It shows you how many chances the Mets had that they couldn't come through on. And you're just getting to this point where if this week goes poorly at the Mets, lose another game on Wednesday, lose the series to the A's. Lose the series to the Marlins. And the Braves keep winning. You could be at the end of August here and the Mets could be so far out of the race that any signs of contention would have just seemed like a mirage, a fantasy in the middle of the season that was never real. That's what you're at risk of. I hope that this team finds a way to fight back. I sat around yesterday's show win five games this week. Guess what? There's still five games left. Go on a winning streak and prove the doubters wrong, but the doubters are only going to get louder. And you could feel if the Mets are in that clubhouse, if they were listening to this, they could feel like, man, we earned so much more than this. How can the fan base jump off the bandwagon this quick? It's been a couple of weeks of this. And at some point, you have to call a spade a spade. If this team doesn't turn it around quick, this season is going to be over early. And that is so unfortunate because all I care about this year, I don't even care at the Mets but make the playoffs. Of course, I want it to happen. I want the Mets to go into that last week of the season with a chance. I want to watch those games against the Braves and I want the Braves to be nervous. That's what I want to see happen this year. To me, if the Mets are within two games of the Braves going into that series, this season is a net positive. It's a win. Because that would mean the Mets are probably a winning team. I want to see the Mets finish this year with the winning record. But there is absolutely a world where not does that not happen but they end up far from that. And the slide continues throughout the rest of this month into September. And you're just asking a lot of questions about this team moving forward and how much you get to end of the year. It's time to stop the bleeding. Hopefully David Peterson can do that on Wednesday. But are the Mets going to continue to run Brendan in and out there in the two hole? I got to talk about this more. It's killing me to see what's happening with them over here. So I want to break that down. A couple of Mets who are struggling. So we'll go through it. Just a minute. First, though, a word from our sponsors. Today's episode is brought to you by Liquid IV. Brandon Imo is killing the New York Mets right now. It has just been a brutal stretch for Brandon. Start this month, he's seven for 38. He's got 11 strikeouts. He homered in three straight games in the middle of July. He has not homered since, which was July 10, so over a month with that at home run. Brandon Imo, if he's trying to trade some plate discipline for some power, some contact for power, it ain't working anymore. Strikeout rate as high as it's ever been for him at 25%. And he just doesn't look competitive in some of these at bats. And he's bat in second. You have Francisco Lindor, every damn game getting on base, putting himself in scoring position and you waste the net on Brandon Imo right behind him. It's driving me nuts. I get you that to be deferential to the stars a little bit. And the Mets are probably not going to go anywhere if they don't get in them outgoing. And the same can be said for Pete Alonso. But you know what the thing is about Pete? He's frustrated as his at bats have been, and he is striking out a ton. At least he comes through every once in a while. Today he drove in two runs. He got a base hit with 200 in scoring position. He's found a way to get his sometimes, even when the whole runs aren't dropping for him. He's at least putting bat on ball and giving himself a chance in some of those runners in scoring position opportunities. Brandon Nimmo is just killing the Mets. Perfect example of this. Bomb in the third inning, Francisco indoor leads off the frame with a double. Nimmo comes up. He strikes out looking. Now, I guess he was probably expecting on an O2 count to see the pitcher waste one. But Boyle was coming after him with fastballs. Prior pitch, he fouled off on an O2 pitch. He got another fast ball. And this wasn't just a fast ball that was dotted. Where you can say, "Oh, well, you know, close call." That got a lot of plate. It was on the inner half. That's a pitch that earlier this season, Brandon Nimmo was turning on and putting in the right field bleachers. But in this game, bat stays on his shoulder. It's brutal because if he just even rolls one over, the indoor advances to third, and then right after that, Jesse Winker gets a base hit. So then that's one more run on the board for the Mets because the indoor doesn't score on Winker single, penalizer strikes out, Francisco Alvarez strikes out. That's the other thing, Francisco Alvarez has been brutal. Brutal. The last 30 games plays in 2.02. The 2.45 on base. 2.98 slug. O.P.S. below 500. It's just been a really, really tough stretch for Francisco Alvarez. He had his opportunities, right? But he couldn't come through. Fourth inning, Jeff McNeil standing on second base. He gets a hanging slider right down Broadway. Rolls it over. Comes up in the fifth inning with two men on, strikes out. And again, that was the Austin Adams situation. If those three guys in particular don't figure it out, the Mets aren't going anywhere this year because they're going to keep playing them. Francisco Alvarez first development alone. You got to play them. penalizer obviously is going to be in there every day. Same thing goes with Brandon Nemo. And those are the guys that are supposed to help you win all these games. They're supposed to be the homegrown stars that are getting a chance now to play in a playoff race. Well, none of them are coming through. And Nemo in particular to be batting second. Really if you think about your top four hitters. To frequently have Nemo and Alonzo, it's just brutal. Francisco Endure is a one man team and that don't work in baseball. The fact is there's not a lot of guys who are swinging it well. I mean, I don't think they're going to go with Francisco Lindor batting first, Jeff McNeil batting second, Jose Iglesias batting third. Don't think we're going to say that. And I understand wanting to keep Lindor in that that lead off spot because he's done so well with it. But I didn't even consider dropping him back to the free hole. And maybe a bat Iglesias and McNeil one and two. Honestly, have them set the table, get on base and maybe Lindor can drive in some more runs. To continue to roll out the line up the way it's been. I just think you're you're banging your head against the wall. And those guys have to step up because you're running out of time. It's that simple. I said it before the week started here. Win five games. I'll keep saying it until the Mets maybe lose on Wednesday night. And I won't be allowed to say it anymore. But you got to find a way against an A's team that has been playing really good baseball. But it's not like they have a collection of town that the Mets can't beat. If you can't beat the A's right now, then what hope do you have in this season, honestly? As good as they might be playing. How are you going to go up against the Brewers or the Phillies in a playoff series? And where the Dodgers even whoever it is. How are you going to go up against some of the better teams in the National League. And went out. How are you going to go on the road to San Diego and win that series. And baseball is funny like that. Or maybe the Mets lose this series lose the next one. And then they sweep the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks. They get right back in the race. Who knows. But right now. It's just not looking like this Mets team is going to figure it out. And that's pretty frustrating. I'm not giving up on them by any stretch. I know it sounds like it because I'm frustrated. I know a lot of you are too. And I'm just expressing that. I still think this team has every ability to go out on Wednesday play a great game. Hopefully David Peterson pitches a gem for him. And you end up getting back on track. You close out the angel or excuse me, you close out the A's. You can tie on the mound on Thursday. And then you beat up on the Marlins over the weekend. You might get those five wins I was talking about or at least get forward when both series. Then you look at the weekends. All right. It all worked out. But if you lose this series to the A's. Lose the series to the Marlins. Are the Braves going to be on Monday? Five, six games up. There's a distinct possibility that things can drop. Very, very quickly for the Mets. So. Now's the time. And the final segment today, we're going to talk a little bit about strongly martes rehab as he's moved up to Syracuse. Also, the Mets made it signing today. So go through all of that to close out the show. First though, another word from our sponsors. Today's episode is brought to you by I Bada. It's summertime, which means it's barbecue season. Scrolling Marte moved his rehab to Syracuse on Tuesday. He played eight innings, got four at bats, did get a hit. He also made a catch going into the wall, came out of that all good. He did get pinched for in the ninth inning, but that was still pretty much an entire game played. So Marte looks like he's ready to join the meds. I imagine they'll keep him in Syracuse for one more. Make sure he's good playing back to bats. And then you probably get him for that series against the Marlins this weekend. Probably give him Thursday off and you roll from there with him starting, I'd imagine, for the New York Mets on Friday night. And that's going to provide a big lift, just emotionally to the team. I think getting Marte back into the fold is going to be a pretty big help. I also know for a fact that the Marlins, although they trade a lot of guys, they still have a very left-handed pitching staff. And having Marte in the lineup for this series should be a very, very welcome addition. Now other things that happened in that game, Dom Hamill got rocked against. Been a brutal season for him in Syracuse, gave up six runs and four and two thirds. Sean Reed Foley came on a relief, got the final out of the fifth, but it gave up two runs in the sixth inning. The Sean Reed Foley's rehab continues to go a little bit. Hey, why are things have not worked out for him? The control hasn't always been there. And he's been giving up runs, so I don't think the Mets are going to be calling on Sean Reed Foley any time soon. I think this would be a very long extended rehab until he figures some things out. And then maybe we will see him back at some point. He's definitely getting there as far as just pitching in games. But those appearances have still been a little bit far between at times and the results have not been there. Tyler Zuber did pitch a good inning. I just want to note that I worked a perfect eighth with two strikeouts. Zuber is the pitcher of the Mets got back at the deadline in the trade with the Rays. They made that deal pretty close to the actual deadline. Now I'm drawing a blank who they sent. I think that was what low level prospect. I was always the relief the relief pitcher names. This gave me at the time. But regardless, maybe we see Zuber at some point. The other guy we could see is Eddie Rosario, who the Mets signed today on a minor league deal. Rosario started this season with the Nationals. Things did not go well. He got cut was picked up by the Braves. Everybody thought, here you go. A 2021 Atlanta brave coming into the fold. It's going to make everything better. It has it. He got cut. So he was just free to be signed by anyone. The Mets pick him up on a minor league deal. Absolutely no harm in doing that. Do I think Eddie Rosario is going to have an impact in the Mets this year? No, I do not. Rosario is hitting 175 on the season, 215 on base, 316 slug, 531 OPS. He has hit 10 home runs, so there is still pop in that bat. But I just can't see a world where he comes up and makes an impact. You have five outfielders once Marte returns between Nemo, Winker, Marte, Bader, Taylor. Not even counting Jeff McNeil. It's your sixth. Beyond that, you even have DJ Stewart who's hitting 400 in Triple Ed. Ben Gamble hasn't even looked that bad in the big leagues this year. So I can't see Rosario really coming up and playing a role on this stretch. But not the worst thing to make when you're just trying to throw some darts against the wall and see what sticks. On yesterday's show, I did mention that I wanted to talk about Carson Bench making his pro debut. He's playing in what's called the bridge league. And I actually have never heard of this. I thought he was playing in the complex league, but then I couldn't find stats anywhere. I guess the complex has what they call the bridge league and it's a league for new draft picks. So it eases them into pro balls so we haven't actually got him assigned to one of the Mets affiliates just yet. So there are no stats to be found, but in his first game, he did get two hits where he produced some pretty high acts of velocities on a single and a double. So we'll see when he's officially put in the complex league if he plays some time in St. Lucie this year. Maybe they just decided to pour it in Lucie. There would be anything wrong with that. But it is good to see the Mets first round pick wearing Mets colors, playing in games. And I'll be excited to see what he does in his limited playing time on the stretch and then of course next year. He will be one of the prospects that circled that you want to keep your eyes on as a guy that could rise to the system pretty quick. Anyway, that's going to be all for today's edition of locked on Mets. Thank you all for tuning in tomorrow's show. We'll either talk about the Mets losing their fifth straight game and I'll probably be in an even worse date as I was tonight or maybe some optimism will return. We'll talk about the Mets getting back on track and being in position to beat the A's on Thursday. It's one of the two. We'll see what happens. I appreciate you all again for tuning in.
