How about a hang a starter and a game? Jackson Meryl did it all week with the bat. And tonight with the glove, he ends the game. There will be no challenge. And the Padres beat the Pirates again. Final score of two to one. What a terrific flows out play by none other than Jackson Meryl. Welcome in to a Tuesday edition of Gwen and Chris Tony Gwen Jr. Chris L.O. Matt Scravey. As you heard, the Padres win another one. And I mean it was pretty, I don't know if spectacular is too strong of a word, but it didn't end in the ordinary. A nice, what? Throw out the star type play for Jackson Meryl to end it. Offensively didn't have his fingerprints on it, but they didn't need it. They got just enough offense. But I think the story of yesterday's game was Joe Musgrove. We'll get to that in a second. Let me welcome in Chris L.O. How are you doing, sir? I'm good Tony. I was there last night and as soon as that ball was hit by Brian Reynolds, the two words that flashed into my head were tie game. You had, he had Bay on first base, pinch running for Pittsburgh. That ball gets down in the gap. He's scoring easily. And I didn't think, I thought the catch was about a seven itself, but I thought the fact that he closed the ground he did was about a nine. Remember, he's probably playing a few steps deeper because it's a no doubles defense. He had to race over, he had to race in. And the timing of the catch is an 11, you know, because it basically saves the game from being tied. And his flair for the dramatic and the remarkable right now just continues. I mean, the legend continues to grow right now. Yeah, it was a nice play. I mean, who was that to hit that ball? Was it Reynolds? Yeah, Reynolds tagged that ball. So it, the depth didn't matter because he hit it so hard. He just had to go laterally and, you know, not everybody's comfortable going that direction as a right handed thrower. You know, I know I always felt better to the backhand side diving that way versus diving to the, to the, to the, I guess, the forehand side. So he may close the ground on it terrific. I had a great view of it. I mean, the jump was good. It was, as you said, it was probably about seven in terms of the catch itself. But again, those, the moment you make those catches actually matters because not everybody can come up and close the deal and make that play there. Jackson does it. But as I said, Joe Musgrove to me was, was the story. No one really knew what to expect. We certainly had heard a lot of good things in terms of some of the changes he has made, had really, really gotten rid of some of the pain that he was dealing with. But you never know. We get into a big league ball game and that, you know, you're doing things a little bit crispier, a little bit faster. He looked great, man. I mean, he wasn't even like particularly sharp, you know, for a guy who has not thrown on a big league mound since May, end of May, but in typical Joe Musgrove fashion, compete it, velocity look good, spin look good. I'm saying in terms he didn't look, turn, he didn't look sharp in terms of commanding all of it, where he wanted to. But stuff was crispy. Fastball was popping. And it was just nice to see my man back on the mound again, man. That is a, that's a shot in the arm for his ball club. And it certainly helped to have him out there in a game in which they won two to one. Yeah, I don't underestimate how important this was to the people in the clubhouse. You know, I mean, we think about how important it was to us, the fans and everybody. And, you know, we love Joe Musgrove as a whole here in San Diego. I'm sure there's a few fans out there that just are not Joe Musgrove big, you know, big supporters. But by and large, you got it's pretty hard to find somebody that doesn't like Joe Musgrove. So we're rooting for this guy. And the thing that impressed me the most Tony is you talked about some of the changes he's made in his delivery and his arm slot, whatever he has to do to try to take some of the pressure off, you know, the injured, you know, thing, you know, to try to keep away from the injury. And usually when you make a change like that, it's, I mean, you got, you're almost going to give the guy a couple of games just to figure it out. And to come in there and throw four and a third innings and allow just two hits and walk only one guy. I mean, that's that's pretty good. I think you hit a batter too. But I mean, my goodness, he was, he was really good and 63 pitches, 43 of them were strikes. And yeah, I mean, that was big and the podrazium bats were quiet last night. So it was important that Musgrove pitched scoreless baseball and to nobody's nobody's surprise. The bullpen came in and did what they usually do after that. But what about Donovan Solano making Manny Machado plays down the third base. He made two in a row there. He made one on the last or actually both of them were the first two outs that Hoenn got after he came into the game. But yeah, Donna, I think somebody said on Twitter, you got Solano'd instead of Machado, because he made two really good plays in a row. But yeah, Musgrove being doing what he did, that means not only helps you win a game last night, makes all the fans feel good, but everyone in that locker room and that clubhouse and this organization to know that potentially they've got, you know, a solid Joe Musgrove going forward. That's a huge, huge thing. So I mean, that's, I mean, this little thing is not a surprise. I mean, it really hasn't mattered who the Padres have plugged in. You know, we've really done this before. It just hasn't turned out like this. I mean, the Padres have had injuries in the past. They've had guys in and out of lineup. And you didn't, they didn't have the kind of depth that they have this year where you could plug someone in and not necessarily ask them to be a Manny Machado or ask them to be a Joe Musgrove or ask them to be a you Darvish or whoever it is that is missed. But everybody who has come in, and this goes back to the Korean, the Korean trip, right where, you know, you had a Tyler Wade having got a start and no. And those guys have been so valuable in those roles all season long, whether it was a Tyler Wade, whether it's a Salano, whether it's a Peralta, it's been Johnson at times. I mean, the Padres have had a set of different guys with Zokar early in the season. They've had different guys at different moments filled the void that has been needed, that has been needed at the time. And they've, they've really, they've really hit on all of them. I mean, at some point, everybody has contributed, at this point, they've contributed on multiple occasions in different games. And so, I think this is why the Padres can have a night in which the offense is relatively quiet, what six hits on both sides. The Padres did what the Pirates didn't do as well. They executed when they got runners on second and over. When they got their opportunity, they cashed in and whether it's the sackbunt or sack fly or moving guys over, this is a part of what they've done well all season long. Yeah, the key statistic in the game last night was left on base. Padres left two, Pirates left 10. And execution. Yeah, the Padres got their guys in. The Pirates did not. But, you know, again, one of the reasons they didn't is because the kid makes the play. I, you know, I'm trying not to overstate this. I'm trying to get away from the rookie of the year talk on, you know, every hour of every show. But, you know, he is, he is, he has, and Mike Schultz said this last night before the game, he has forced, he has bludgeoned his way to the top of the rookie of the year picture. There is, there's absolutely no way you can follow baseball, no matter where you are, even that East Coast bias thing. And not have seen some of the things that he's done in the last six days. You know, three tying home runs and now a game saving catch. That basically is, you know, very responsible for four wins in a six day span. That has got to get the attention of everybody. So I don't think we need to keep saying he's the rookie of the year. He's doing, he's making all of the cases for himself with his play and his timing is insane, Tony. I mean, maybe we should have known that that was how the game was going to end, you know, I mean, because of the way things have been going for him lately. Yeah, no, Jackson's. But you said that all Jackson's playing very well right now, just needs to keep it up for another mother and half. So yeah, I won't, I won't spend too much time a year conversation as it pertains to Jackson. He's doing all that he needs to do. Ultimately, the voters need to pay close attention to what him and Paul ski this because that's basically the two dudes who at this point are in it. I mean, it could take this and I do recall Paul Goldschmidt the year he won was was out in front for a very, very long time. And then he had like one of the worst in the middle of August on like he's struggling. All of a sudden the conversation wasn't as crispy as it was for him early. So Jackson just needs to keep playing how he's playing and that'll take care of the rest. On the flip side, the Padres had last night, I believe was the eighth time in the past 15th game that the Padres have had to use the bullpen for four innings or more. And you know, we kind of seen this a little bit earlier in the year at one point were after some like about a slew of great starts. There was a rough patch there where starters were struggling. Booping came in and did their job for the most part, but then we saw shortly thereafter the bullpen start to struggle a little bit. And that was a little bit before the Padres made the moves that they made. And I bring this up because of all the things that have are going right for the Padres right now, there are some things that are starting to pop up, you know, you're not having everybody at their best right now coming out of the bullpen. You brought it up yesterday about Yuki being in that high leverage spot that he hasn't been in. He's been in and out of I think this year. And you know, you're watching it yesterday was a little bit different obviously because you knew going in that Joe wasn't going to be. I mean, yes, he could have used the 60 whatever pitches and just been so efficient that he got to like the sixth inning. But if you were being real about it, that was unlikely to happen in his first start. So you kind of knew this was coming. But you know, this is not something that I think Mike showed had hit on it maybe a couple maybe a week ago. It isn't something that he he necessarily wants to be have to do. He would rather be able to go, you know, six, have a seventh, have an eighth, have a ninth boom done with it. But you know, there has been, especially on that road trip, Padres won all but one of those games, but that bullpen was was taxed pretty good. Yeah, I think the the only difference that I see this time a that the bullpen is, you know, better and more equipped to deal with this and they were early in the season. But secondly, I think a lot of this also has had to do with the fact that, you know, maybe intentionally to a certain extent, the Padres are, you know, just not asking Waldron, not asking King, not asking obviously last night, Musgrove, but not asking some of these guys to go as deep into games to try and save some of the innings for the starters as well moving forward. So I think some of this is also by design. But I know what you're saying, Tony, when you use the bullpen, four and a four plus innings every single game, again, surely they get tired and they start not performing up to the same level that they had been. So it can happen. Regardless of what the reasoning is, because we saw this coming in terms of having to monitor Waldron's innings, having to monitor King's innings, no matter how good they've been, this is a part of the, I think the calculus in going out and adding all of the arms that they added because they're going to have to absorb some of it. You're right. I think they are shaving innings off everywhere they can for some of the starters. And it's that's on top of, you know, all those try to look better yesterday. He hasn't quite been his regular self. So it's just something to keep an eye on. Not a, not a worry of any sort, but something to keep pay attention to as these games. Well, we have to give the fans out there something to worry about. Some of them did not be comfortable if they didn't have something to be stressed about or they would come up with it on their own. I mean, before yesterday, everybody was panicked that the pitching wasn't very good ever again. Well, no, I think they go out and they shut it down. What? I'm just saying every day, even though they won 17 to 20, people are coming up with something. It's it's from Padre's pen pals yesterday. This is not sustainable is what the writers said. It's right back and win every single game. Not necessarily came back last night, but these close games, like it's stressful. And jerks and profile even said these are exhausting games to play. They are. There's no doubt you got to be like the concentration level has to be so high and those type of games. And it's like soon as that you can like let the concentration thing go, it is like you hit a brick wall at that point. And so I imagine doing that, especially on August 13, where it's like you're like in the dog days as it is, everybody is just trying to get to September where it's like you don't have to try to get the energy. It's automatically there because it's almost like the brain and the body recognized. Oh, it's like go time, go time. It's like summer vacation. When you know you're a month out as a kid, it's like all the countdown is on. Right. You lock in exactly. So I imagine that that's a little bit of what's going on right now for these guys. All right, let's let's step away. We got it off to a good start here. When we come back, Padre's have a stretch of 18 games in 18 days, beginning Friday. A little bit about that. Apparently, uh, apparently scrapies guys on the move to Pittsburgh. But if you saw it all, you had Tony going junior, Brandon, IU, 49ers, Steelers. Here to have a deal in place. Oh, that was also the news over the weekend, so. All right, well, we'll see. Don't be mad. Scrabies. Don't get angry with me. Just don't kill the messenger. You're just reporting years that's three days old. It's not old. They apparently, okay. I know I saw the news as I was walking to my car to leave her work today. It sounds like you're a little bitter. It's what it sounds like. I was ready for this whole thing to be over. He's wearing it. It's over. It's just what you're rooted for. No, it's not. It's not official. Well, I'm actually still looking for where'd you guys see it at? CBS Sports says they have a deal in place. So whatever Scrabie deny, deny, deny makes you feel better. Welcome back to one in Chris. Oh, he's all of these. I don't want so in a guy who doesn't want to play on the 49ers of the team. You know, you sound like you're the owner of the team. I kind of am. You really, truly do. There's you're just a fan and stay in your lane. Hey, the 49ers are the only thing I will lose my mind over in the sports world. And and you do. And I do. And this has been a major distraction. And this is going to ultimately hurt the team on the field. Yes, it is. Because guess who's your number one now? He's got a true number one. Last about number one. Oh wait, you know what? Nevermind. There's no such thing as the number one receiver. So you guys would be fine. Okay. Debo. Debo. Debo. I mean, he's gonna be good. But nobody cares that your feelings are this hurt. No, you brought it up. Yeah, I just brought up a news story to the people that might be interested in knowing that Brandon and I you guys apparently on his way to the Steelers. And he's a stealer. You have gone into a complete utter deep depression. And you're trying to make yourself feel better by yelling out, we don't want anybody who doesn't want to be 49ers. True. Why would you want someone on your team that doesn't want to be on your team? I don't understand it. Well, it's like, when it is your team, I won't mind you saying that. But it is still not your team. Who are you going to say to team? You're a fan. I was going to say it's almost like you're upset that he doesn't want to be on your team, but you also don't want to mind your team because he doesn't want to be on your team. It's I can see the conundrum. No, I think deep down inside Brandon, I youke is like, man, they called my bluff. And now I'm going to Pittsburgh. That ain't it. Well, what about a Pittsburgh where Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are slapping each other on the field? Yes. Yes. Yes. That's where he wants to go. Do you remember reporting that? He wants true stability. He wants to go. He wants to go. He wants to go where he has a solid, you know, big league quarterback like Russell Wilson, instead of some, you know, ne'er-do-well youngster like Rock Purdy. What is Russell Wilson? And he gets to play for my Tomlin. That is a plus. I will give him that. Oh, yeah. There's that. My Tomlin is a good coach. She's going to go. But I mean, Justin Fields and Russell Wilson slapping each other during practice does not sound like stability. What do you, what did this slap in each other? Chris reported it a few weeks ago. I saw, I saw a picture on Twitter. The two of them, they didn't slap each other. Justin Fields threw a touchdown pass in practice and turned to Russell Wilson and sent something to the effect of, yep, the highest paid backup in the league. I ought to be working at Walmart. And then for some reason, Russell Wilson thought that was kind of a rude thing to say. So he slapped him and the benches emptied at Pittsburgh training camp. Wait, are you guys making this up? But this is real? This is real. This is real. It was a real tweet and there was video of the brawl. Let me pull this up. That's crazy. Come on. It is crazy. It is crazy. Russell Wilson is crazy. I think he's the very definition of crazy these days. Welcome back. When in Chris, we are here. Scravey is now going to be down and out because it looks like his man is gone. Even it's really funny because to listen to you complain about this, all I'm, you're saying we don't want a yuke if he doesn't want to be here. What I'm hearing is, oh no, we lost. That's what I'm hearing. That's what I'm hearing. I know what you're saying, but it doesn't hurt when he actually does get traded because it's going to hurt the team. Oh yeah. You think it's good to lose a wide receiver with like three weeks before the regular season? Absolutely not. Like they had a deal placed with the Browns. They're going to send a Mari Cooper back. I would have been all about that. And then Brandon, you didn't want to get traded to the Patriots since when is he calling the shots? Come on. It's rough. Bandscrab. He threw his mic away. That's how pissed he was right now. He did. You brought this up, Chris, and you know where this would have gone. I know where it's going to go because you're you're you're a die hard. You're beyond the die hard. You're in a whole nother category. Chris. Yeah, it is. All right. We got the Padres and the Pirates coming up tonight. Game two of the three game series. Michael King is the starter tonight for the Padres. And we want to let you know that at some point during our show today, that means anytime now between now and five 30, you're going to have a chance to win a pair of tickets to see one of my wife's favorite bands, Def Leppard. Doesn't mean you can invite her. Def Leppard and Journey. They are performing at Petco Park on August the 30th. Tickets are on sale now at ticketmaster.com. So that is going to be coming up a little later. I gotta say this. I'm searching for Russell Wilson slaps fields. I can't find this bad boy anywhere. I need you guys to tell me where to find Russell Wilson slapping fields. See Justin Field. When we did this, there were plenty of videos that came up and I believe we got fooled and I didn't want to call Chris out in the air for it. But I think that maybe that was an over-exactuation. But it's a whole lot better if you go with my version of the show. It is. But I don't believe that Justin Field's turned around and said, "I guess I should be working on Walmart." And then on top of that, Russell Wilson says, "Oh, that's disrespectful. Let me see." So you're telling me they just had video of the brawl and they blamed it on Russell Wilson. Yes, being confirmed on the chat, it's a fake report. See, I didn't do what you do to me and immediately say, "Oh, we got a barrel, Mr. Richard." "We got a barrel, Mr. Richard." Tell me it's a baggasey. It was a baggasey. It's a baggasey. I never for one day, I thought, "Man, Russell Wilson is coming." Russell, he must have really gone off the deep end if he slaps. He's going to the loney bend if he's slapping the guy. Either way, they didn't have a fight in practice. I mean, that was true. I did speak in a fight in practice. I thought this was special. Jesse sent me this. I had saw it earlier, but I didn't like save it. Jesse just sent it to me. "Dear males message, did you guys see this to his patriot team?" I did not. This is great. I hadn't heard this before. He says, "This is the rules. If you are a starter and you fight, you're playing the entire preseason game. If you are a backup and you fight, you aren't playing a preseason game at all. That's how he is going. He must be one of these coaches that is not in agreeance that these fights are okay. That stance seems to tell me that these are punishments. Can you imagine as a star like a Justin Jefferson out there, he gets to the fight, "All right, man, you in the whole preseason game?" That's pretty, I like that. I got to say, that's pretty creative. It's hard. I want these coaches to take back. Coaches need to take back control of their locker rooms, man. They don't have as much as they used to. Unless you're my Tomlin. I mean, how many coaches really can even do what Gerard Mayo is doing? I like it. Throw the gauntlet down. He's definitely throwing the gauntlet down for sure. Yeah, keep these guys at bay. Padres did win last night. Two on Pirates, Jackson Merrill got the final out on a beautiful running diving catch in Wright Center field. Padres did not do much on offense. I thought Profar once again came up with the one big hit they needed last night. Nobody was touching this Jake Woodford. The guy was pitching probably the game of his life into the seventh inning. And finally, Profar rips one into the corner for a double. That set up the first run of the game, but it's not surprising that his Profar once again, he came up with that big play. Bogart's obviously had to single him in once the infield came in, Tony. How about his hit bat? I mean, you talk about not just doing the job that you're asked to do there, which is getting him in. He was basically playing prep pepper. If you go back and look at the swing, he just he was to shoot it through the right size. That is a that is a pepper drill type swing. And it was exactly what they needed. Yeah, exactly what it was great. Just fantastic. Padres win finding all the ways to win these games 17 out of 20 is the stretch. But as you may or may not know, Diamondbacks, they rallied to win. Dodgers got a good performance from Kershaw. So it's pretty much status quo in the NL West. Can't make this stuff up. It's just Padres when everybody else wins. Yeah. Yeah, the Giants did lose a one nothing thriller to the Braves and extra innings. Like Snell would had a no no going there for a little bit. Snell did it again, but he actually ended up getting out pitched by Chris Sale. So that was a really good battle of left-handers last night. That was an old school ace match up right there that you used to tune in for right every every week. That match up would happen and everybody would be dialed in. Bob Gibson, this is so boring. This is boring. But that's the thing those games aren't boring. There might not be any action, but watching a pitcher who's on like we seen Blake before, like it's fun to watch him when he's got it going. So imagine that happening on both side. And you as an offensive player, you're like, whoa, let's just I just got to find a way to get on base somehow. And even about getting a hit just get on base. I feel like I was on this show constantly last year saying, "Don't worry. The Padres are going to be fine. We're going to turn it around." And then it didn't. And now things are going, "Well, I hope I don't jinx them." Yeah. Well, I hope so too. We have a little bit of PTSD out this way and I don't know if it has anything to do with you just that year and itself. But what the Padres have provided a little bit in some PTSD relief is some consistency here. And on the East Coast, specifically as we have this conversation is budding about young Jackson Merrill and Paul schemes. What are you guys seeing out that way that may be able to tell what this story is going to end up being like? It's interesting. I think one of the best that could happen to Merrill is the pirates continuing to lose because I think that the general consensus is that while schemes may be a little bit ahead right now, the Merrill has clearly made a pretty quick run on him. Eventually, the pirates are going to, if they fall too far out of the race, which certainly looks like it's in danger happening, they need Paul schemes for next year and the year after. And so it wouldn't be really shocking to see a certain point for them to be like, "Okay, been a great year schemes, but we're going to shut you down for now." And if that happens, I think that clearly opens up a lane for Merrill. If he doesn't already go ahead and make that lane himself, because clearly what they've been doing has been, what he's been doing has been pretty exciting and certainly very dramatic schemes. I think he's such a central part of baseball's marketing, and he's obviously been terrific. But certainly, I think that what Merrill has been doing is some pretty high profile moments has really been something to see. Yeah, I think the word is getting around for sure. We'll like this with us talking some baseball here. How surprised are you that the Padres have gone on a 16 and 3 or 17 and 3 run now and gone 14 games over 500 and all of a sudden even putting some pressure on the Dodgers? I mean, should we be a little astonished that this is happening before our very eyes out here, Will? I mean, I was pretty astonished that last year happened, so you'll probably do for some good experience. Even when we talked about last year's team, I think there was a sense of that team was obviously better than what they were playing, and there was due for some good vibes, some good rebound vibes to finally happen. I think you're seeing that, but I think you touched on it earlier. The big difference for the Padres is they're getting consistency, and even as talented last year's team was, they just never got that consistency, and I think that's what you're seeing now. I think it's pretty exciting, and I think that even when they made that train, the offseason, one of the things they talked about was to lengthen the rotation all of it and get a little depth and just give them a little bit more of that stability. Now, there have been some ups and downs in that, obviously, but there is a steady hand, and it's funny, one of my big controversial predictions of the offseason was the idea that Mike Shelton could be a sleeper candidate for manager of the year, and probably this is, I think, Mike Shelton's a pretty good manager, but also because clearly, last year, there was this massive underachievement with what happened. This year, that kind of bounced back, I think he was set to benefit. Even with the Cardinals, he had a surprising end to his career with the Cardinals, but even with those teams, he was known as a pretty steady guy and one that could keep things level. I think you're seeing that now. I think there is some good fortune coming their way where there was so much bad fortune last year, but really, I think it's as basic as baseball season, the long season, those wild swings that you see, you really just kind of need to level that out, and I think you're seeing that. I think that's one of the reasons they've been able to make some ground on the Dodgers, and the Dodgers obviously have a lot of talent, and now that's just back, and we'll see what happens with the Dodgers that have had so many wild fluctuations this year, and so many things have gone this way and that way. I think there is something to that kind of steadiness, but also, it's worth noting, it's really been kind of remarkable to see how the entire NLS has been really for the last month. It's crazy that basically three of the hottest teams in baseball come from the NLS, and none of them are the Dodgers. It's a pretty fun thing to happen, so it's really making for a pretty exciting race, and it's really something that the Padres are kind of so well situated right now, particularly because you look at the recipe in a wild card chase. Sure, the Giants have been a little hotter, and the Cubs are kind of coming on. The Cardinals seem to be fading, but I don't think anything about the Mets or even the Braves looks all that scary right now. I think not only this has been a hot run for the Padres, but when you look around, I don't see any, I don't look at those other teams and think, "Oh, beware of them." I think the Padres are just as well positioned there. Yeah, the Padres have handled both of those teams well here in the regular season. Well, I got to ask you a little bit about that Dimationally West that you kind of hit on. We talked at the beginning of the season, and you know, I think about a lot of people's accounts, they thought that nationally West could be one of the tougher divisions. It just took about half of a season for them to kind of start to prove that. What do you think happened in that time as simple as teams getting healthy? Partly that, again, you've also seen them kind of get some stability, too. Like, it's funny when you look at the Diamondbacks, I've been riding by the Diamondbacks all year, and I've been pointing out that, you know, clearly, I think everyone, it was under the presumption that with some of the moves they made the off season, and like Corbin Carroll presumably getting even better after his terrific year last year, that they were, in fact, better than the team that went to the World Series last year. Now, last year's World Series team had a certain fluke-ish aspect to it. They were outscored on the year. I thought it was kind of funny for a lot of this year. The Diamondbacks had a better run differential than last year's World Series team, but had a far worse record. We're under 500. That's another one of those things I know. Padres fans don't want to hear about positive run differential after last year, but generally that does swing back. It didn't swing back for the Padres last year. Sorry, but it does swing back. I think you've seen that from the Diamondbacks. And I think it's remarkable, too, when you think of the things, a lot of things have gone wrong for that team. You know, I mean, Jordan Montgomery was one of their big guys, and that hasn't really worked out at all. And even with the giant half of this season, Blake Stell was a mess for them until he's really snapped back now. So I think that, like, I do feel like a lot of things are landing just right for those things. But also, I think it speaks to all three of those teams, the Diamondbacks, the Giants, and the Padres as well. They all went into this season with the expectations of winning. Now the Padres took obviously the loss. Now they lost. So, though, but I think going into the season, the idea was like the Padres were not punting. The Padres were trying to win this year just like the Diamondbacks and Giants were. And so the idea, like at a certain level, these were the expectations for all three of those teams. And it speaks to the idea that when you have those expectations, you're not like, say, the Nationals, the Nationals were a team that was kind of around the wildcard chase for a while, but really was not that aggressive about it going after some of their needs because they knew they were pushing off down the line. All three of those teams had a lot invested in this year and did what they could to add to those teams of the deadline and stay the course. And I think you're seeing the benefit of that now. Will I choose with us talking some baseball here on Gwen and Chris? Well, there's a couple of strange statistical things that could happen in this year, and I wanted to get some of your thoughts. Number one, it's looking more and more like we're not going to have a single team this year win 100 games. One of those teams could get hot and maybe get there. But at the moment, I don't think anybody's on pace for 100. And that doesn't happen very often. I think the last time was 2014. Maybe even strangers, what's going on in the National League. Whereas of right now, Luis Arise and Marcelo Zuna are the only two hitters who qualify over the 300 batting mark and Arise is the leader I think at 305. We could have the first season in baseball history where a league doesn't have a 300 hitter. Do these two things say anything about the state of baseball as of right now? You know, I think the first one definitely does and in a way that I think is maybe not as positive, which is to say, winning 100 games, that's great. And it's very important. And if you win 100 games, great. You had an awesome season. But ask the Baltimore Orioles last year of what good that got them in the playoffs. I think you're seeing more and more teams recognizing that trying to build that super team that dominates the regular season, it doesn't mean as much as it did in 1993 or 1984 or 1967. Really, you're just trying to get in the tournament. Ask the Diamondbacks about that last year who won 85, 86 games and still went to the World Series. I think teams aren't necessarily incentivized to try to beat 100 win teams. With what you want to do is you want to be your best self heading into October and not really sweat trying to become that kind of super team, which I'm not sure is great, right? Because I think that ultimately, I think it's good that more teams are in the playoff chase now. I think that is positive. I think that's a good side that you get with the expanded playoffs. The bad side you get is the regular season for these really top shell teams like the Dodgers or like the Philly. They can go ahead and have a bad month and not really sweat it or not really feel like they need to go do something to fix it because really all they gotta do is get in the tournament. And so the idea, like those panic chases we've seen in the past where there's a famous year where the Giants won 103 games that didn't make the playoffs in like the late 80s, you're just not going to see that anymore. And so teams, it's not really, teams aren't encouraged to go for a 100 win. So they're not getting a 100 win. It doesn't really matter. You get 97 to the number one C. That's the same as winning a 100. And again, the Orioles won 100 games last year and they lost all three playoff games and none of that matter at all. So I think that's why you're seeing not as many 100 win teams. As for the baddie average thing, I think that is just in the progression of what baseball is going. The batters like I love a rise. We all love a rise, but guys like that are just, that's not what teams are incentivizing when they get players. And I think that's one of the things that baseball has worked on trying to correct a little bit, but I think it's going to take a while to get a certain level in a world of launch angle and exit velocity. The idea of being a 300 hitter is just not something that's valued. I don't think that's just true for teams. I think players also don't necessarily feel that way. I mean, if you go out to the ballpark and look at the used to be when you went to the ballpark, batting average was the only percentage you saw. Maybe you saw winning percentage, but that was it. Now you go to a game and you see all these different percentages, all these different things. And for an old school fan, that might feel strange, who it doesn't into our players because they've grown up in this world and they're used to this. They're constantly looking at these numbers. And batting average, frankly, is just not one of them that they're looking at that much. So I do think that I guarantee it gets cool. I love the rise. I love guys in Stephen Klahn that go for 300 and so on. But they do feel like throwback more than necessarily something and currently today's game. Yeah, players aren't into it because there's not incentivize. You don't get paid to have a high batting average. You just don't. But I think you are starting to see the pendulum that swung far to the one side, slowly starting to make its way back, at least it makes the temp to back to the middle because I think what players are recognizing is in order to get paid, you got to be in this league long enough. And some of this stuff doesn't suit every player. So we'll see how it goes. Well, I want to ask you a little bit, and this is a little bit off of kind of what we've been at. I'm looking at the Oakland A soon-to-be Sacramento A's. Eventually, the Las Vegas A's. Major league baseball clearly wants to expand two teams. But they can't do so until everybody is situated in terms of a home and a stadium that is up to the standards of today's day and age. How long do you think it'll be before this actually happens? Because you talk start to get the feeling that this Las Vegas thing is might not be a done deal when it's all said done. Yeah, I think that that's what they need to get locked. I think Tampa, they were basically on the raise in the A's to kind of figure out their situation. The raise seems to have done that. I think they've kind of figured out their stadium situation. It's going to be built in the same area, which I think concerns some people. But I think certainly, basically baseball has been wanting to expand. They've had to wait to get those situation settled. The raise are done. The A's would like to have the situation settled but aren't necessarily there yet. But I do think I do think that with with the raise situation now taking care of, there's going to be more and more pressure for the A's to get that locked down and get that nailed down. And really it's kind of crazy if you actually even kind of look at the way to schedule this setup for next year with the would be Sacramento A's. There's actually some wiggle room. There's actually some games that they're playing that may be at their home stadium or maybe at a undisclosed other location. There's a lot of, even for the Las Vegas, they're talking about playing games in other places. They're trying to build some slack into there. I think they were basically going to get that figured out. But there are situations that they have to figure out in Las Vegas and with that ownership group first. They are closer though. They are closer than they've been before. And I do think when that happens, Commissioner Rob Manfred has been very explicit saying he would like to, he's getting older. He's already talked about how this will probably be his last run, last contracted commissioner. It's something that he is prioritized to get done before he leaves. That requires the A's thing to get done. But when you're explicit about wanting to get all that done before you leave, these things tend to tend to happen. So I once the A's thing get done, it wouldn't surprise me to see that happen pretty quickly. Well, well, as always, man, we appreciate you coming on and talking to some pottery baseball, talking to baseball in general with us. We'll catch up with you again down the line. Of course, thanks as always. Have a good one. Thanks so much, Will. Will Litch of MLB.com kind of breaking it down as he sees fit. He said he was a little scared coming on because last year he was the Padres biggest cheerleader. And it just never quite happened. Yeah. And I was doing a little looking at this 100 win team thing. There's been at least three teams that have won 100 games in each of the last six full seasons of baseball. Obviously 2020 nobody won 100 games. So in each of the last six years, there's been at least three teams this year, there may be no teams. But here's why what Will Litch says is correct. Of the 20 teams that have won 100 games in the last six years, only the Astros in 17 in the Red Sox in 18 won the World Series. So that's why teams don't want to win 100 games. Could that guarantee a championship at all? But that's the thing is nothing guarantees you a championship. I then I don't know that teams don't want to win 100 games. I don't know that there's a team that's played good enough consistently enough for a whole season. The thing about 100 games is it's from April to October, basically, that you plan pretty consistent baseball in order to get to 100 wins. It is not easy. And I just think we've been spoiled over the last six years of teams getting like multiple teams getting to 100. You're right in the new format and I don't even know if it has anything to do with the new format. You got to go so many rounds, so much can happen in that time frame for those 100 win teams. The Astros certainly figured it out in terms of, you know, the buy. Nobody else has though. So we'll see it's still an early project, right? I mean, this is year three of the playoffs, right? Are you're for three? You're three will be the third year. Yeah, three. Yeah. So we got a lot of data to collect before we could start really making it an assumption of how it's affecting the playoff structure. But yeah, certainly right now, no one on pace. Let's get to break four. No, excuse me, three o'clock hour on the way. Daily Gabby. Hey, what's happening? Sandy, you're gonna welcome back to it. Three o'clock hour, winning Chris on a Tuesday, Chris Ello, turning going junior down to Petco Park, Matt Scravy alongside here in the Odyssey Palace studios, Padres and Pirates. Pirates have to play the Padres again. You know, they're probably not looking forward to that. They've suffered all four, four for four to the Padres and three of them have been really tough ones to take. But the Padres have been finding a way to get it done in these tight ballgames. Those are seventh loss in a row, I think. Yeah, the last four to the pirate Padres and three in the middle of that to the Dodgers. Pirates have really fallen out of contention. There's no question. Robert Suarez nailed it down last night. 25 26 saves now for Suarez. Um, I just wanted to throw this out. Suarez coming into the game last night. Unbelievable moment. Padres take a two nothing lead. The bottom of the eighth inning ends and the lights go out at Petco Park. And then the flames start going around on the all the video boards. And Robert Suarez comes jogging in from the bullpen and there's. Holy snikies. Exactly. There's a cameraman running behind him and he's jogging in and the lights are now flickering and Robert Suarez's entry music just playing. I wish he would come out through that. Yeah, he's not coming into that. But here's the thing and this is I don't mean this is a dig at Robert Suarez because I did get kind of charged up. But when the lights went out last night and he came into the game, I got taken back to when Hell's bells used to start and Trevor came into a game. And I just don't think that's that's never going to be duplicated anywhere anyhow. No matter how hard they try to do it. Um, what do you think? Am I too old school? What do you mean by that? Like just when the music started at the beginning of Hell's Bells. Yeah, I mean that it's it's part of the iconic that I don't think it can ever be yeah. No, it can't it can't be duplicated because it's a it's not just about the music. It's about what song it is. This per Hell's Bells is perhaps the greatest entry song you can have for a pitcher. There you go. The only way to really replicate it is to use it. And then you have to be as good as the guy who was using it before. And you know, and so and that's that's going to be tough. So I mean, if that would have came on yesterday, my guess is you would have it would have taken you back there and it would have gave you those same feel. And that's in the song like they're I don't even you know, I wasn't until Trevor was coming out to it. I couldn't tell you who what the Hell's Bells was. But when he started coming out to it, I don't know how you can't come to the you can't read it. Yeah, you just that is that is the greatest closer song. And it only works for a closer, right? Because you got to come in from the dugout or from the bullpen as a hitter. You don't get that long like you get like like 10 seconds and then it's over. That song has to play out. And I just think he was one of the he's the first one to come out to it. And I just think it's going to be ever forever etched in anybody's head until we're all dead. And nobody who was around that was could that saw it. Then it can be used again and be replicated in the same way. Now it's never going to be topped. I guess that was the point I was trying to make I didn't make it very clearly. Robert Suarez's entry is cool. But it's just nobody's ever going to get to Trevor. I know the Yankee fans think that Moriano Rivera's entertainment was better than Trevor's. But I will match it up any day of the year. Hey, here's the other thing. They didn't have the technology to turn the lights off when Trevor came out. Like if they turn the lights off, we would have been waiting for 45 minutes for them to get the light backfired. So, so if Trevor had these effects, if Trevor had these effects, it would definitely be over. We wouldn't there. It would be hands down. Well, I know what you can find it. If they turn if they turn the lights on at Qualcomm, bro, it was the game would have probably been suspended for the rest of the night because the lights wouldn't come back on. So, the lights went out last night, man. Everybody got excited. Ryan Hellsley does that too, guys. And he does AC DC. He does health bells. That ain't the same. I guarantee. Hellsley does health bells. Yeah, we did. We did a big five question. You guys were both fine with it. I was not fine with it. I'm fine with it. But it ain't the same. I mean, you know, still hate the tellers. It's not the same. Of course. And he, you know, it's, it's, you know, why that song, like if Trev-- I hope Trevor's not. Trevor had for some reason not been good. Like, we wouldn't think of the same, the, the Hells bells in the same way. The fact that we think of it is because every time he came in for like, what, 500 plus 600? How many, let me say Trevor finished with it? Six something. Yeah, I guess. 600 plus saves later. That's why we feel that way about the song. Now, if Trevor came out and he got like, you know, $200, $150, we're probably not, we're probably not doing that. I just know that the excitement with Trevor coming into a game was so much. The crowd was so insane as he was running out on the field that that song was screaming out over the loudspeakers that, and you're right, Tony, it all has to do with his pitching. It felt like once he got to the mound and Hells bells finally stopped playing. That the other team has what just gone home right then. Hey, he's like, this is not a score. They weren't going to score. I mean, people were just no chance. The game was over. And that's because he was so good. But anyway, I just thought of that last night. Was that because at home, I didn't really, did they play Hells bells for him last night? First for us? No, no, they play whatever he plays. He played his song. Yeah, I don't know what his song is. I got to recognize it. So because somebody probably somebody probably knows what it is. It's a good it's a good song. It's a good lead it, you know, walk in song. And you know, the fireworks and everything that's happening when he comes in, it's good. But I just think that, you know, this is just something that we were lucky enough to see when we saw it. And it's never going to be that way again. On TV last night, they didn't go to break. And I was like, is something broken? Because usually they go right to break because they have a set amount of time that they need to get back by. But they went the whole entire commercial break without going to break because they wanted everybody to see the Robert Suarez thing. I I you know what I don't know is and we should know this because we've we've interviewed Trevor a million times. But what is the story behind Hells bells other than the fact that he loved AC DC and loved that song? Did he did? I don't know if you know, Tony, but I don't know if anybody know. Did he go to the Padres and say, Hey, I want to start playing that when I come in? Did somebody on the Padres say, Hey, we got an idea? You know, when you come into the game, let's play a Hells bells. That's a great question. I doubt. I don't know. I mean, who honestly deserves the credit for the I'm a tech team right now. Oh, well, there's the source. There we go. I mean, that will be perfect. Yes. I really wish Robert Suarez would rent out to this too. Chris has no idea what this is. Little Stone Cold Steve Austin right here. Yeah, sauce the 360 baby. Can you imagine Robert Suarez running on the field? I just love 90s wrestling interest. Unfortunately, Robert Suarez wouldn't know what that is either. Hey, you don't know that. How old is Robert Suarez? I don't know. He wouldn't. Let me see. You don't know that. Stone Cold Steve Austin is a worldwide known person, right? Right? I don't know if he's worldwide. He's worldwide in my world. Oh, he definitely. 1991 is when Robert Suarez was born. He's he's a stone cold guy. I'm sure. He's a stone cold guy. Why don't you go up next time you see Rob? Next time you're about to ignore Robert Suarez and the Padres. Oh, is that how we're going to do that? Well, Joe Musgrove told us the way you are that you, you know, don't go up to the players. Go up to Robert Suarez and ask him. He knows who Stone Cold is. Robert, I have a new song selection for you. And you come out. Just have a boom box on my shoulder. But the kind of success he's the success he's had this year. I don't think he's going to be changing anytime soon. No, not even close. I put it. I put it. I asked him how the Hell's bells become his song. So I'll wait to hear back. All right. I'll get the verdict on that. Gwen and Chris here, 309 is the time. We are going to be giving away, speaking of great music, pair of tickets to see Def leopard and Journey at Petco Park. Thank you for playing the Aztec song because I was curious. Where did the Aztecs stand heading into this season? Sean Lewis, brand new coach and the excitement around Aztec football. According to Bill Connolly, now the ESPN staff writer who does such things, the Aztecs and the college football power rankings enter the season number 91 in the nation. I'm sorry, what number 91 in the nation? Yeah. They're 91st out of 134 teams. So the San Diego State Aztecs, San Diego State Aztecs, number 91 trailing such teams as Wyoming, Vanderbilt, Air Force, Toledo, we're even behind Texas State, Coastal Carolina, and South Alabama, and others. That's all right. Yeah, we got somewhere. That's where Sean Lewis is starting. I'm so 91st. Geez, I had no idea. There's 43 teams. There's 43 teams below them. That makes you feel any better. That does a little bit. They got a lot. They got a, you know, that's the, Sean Lewis is excited everybody to the point where I think a lot of people have forgotten that they were four and eight last year. I forgot. It wasn't really a great season, you know? So yeah, I think Sean, you know, I think he's going to end up a whole lot higher than 91st, but that's where he's starting. And they move up quickly. Once they're at 91st, you take out Texas A and then commerce. You go down to 70. You beat them, you're going to move up at least to 90th. And then Oregon State, you can make a big jump if you won that one. Now, if they lose to Texas A&M commerce, they can be the last. Then they can be on the way down. They lose to Texas A&M commerce. Stop. If they lose to them, they can be last. I'm worried about this. I'm worried about that. Actually, Kirk Kenny and I have been texting here and there and we talked to him on the show last week. He is very positive about this team and if Kirk says a whole lot. It tells me that this team has a chance if Kirk is a little positive about it. Kirk is not always the most positive individual. So I'll tell too straight. Yeah, he keeps it a buck. So I'm happy that he's feeling positive about this season. Yeah, he did have an injury update today on one of their running backs. So Keenan, Chris, John from the USC transfer, who was an Aztec last year, suffered an ankle injury in the fan fest game the other day, may not play on the opening game. But we got to do we have an opening game day temp temperature? Yeah, it's got to be colder than it was for the original opening snap. I still hot that Arizona game the hottest day in the history of changing. I sat directly in the sun for like maybe five minutes and I was like, I can't do it. I just remember I just I it's funny because the hysteria of how hot it was and them having to make wholesale changes at the stadium to to kind of find a way to keep it cooler was like at an all time high. It was and that is such typical bad luck for San Diego State athletics. Well it was like if anything can go wrong it will and I mean you build a brand new stadium and everyone's excited and it debuts on the hottest day in the history of the planet. Everybody hated your stadium because of that and that had nothing to do with it. Nothing to do with it. I went to it and it was sort of like the Walking Dead because there were many people lying on the ground. It was almost like it was almost like it was wiped out. Yeah, yeah. It was that I just I think back to that day and then like reading getting on Twitter and just seeing how crazy everybody is going about it. San Diego State did this and San Diego State did that. San Diego State put it on me. Why did they pour water over everybody? I mean what do you want them to do? That's where that's where we all started finding out like the details of an awning and how it worked because everybody was looking it up at the time. Yes, where's an awning? It only costs an extra 42 million dollars. They should have had it up. That's why the brains don't have a roof on their stadium. You know how about this? Why don't you not drink a lot of alcohol and you drink water in the heat? That might help try to try to stay hydrated. There's something beer doesn't necessarily accomplish. The beer definitely doesn't accomplish that. Ooh, I have a jazz chisel. Update? Update, yes. All right, we'll give it to us. What happened with an update? What happened to us? We left the game last night. Oh, that's awesome. Okay, we'll tell you on the other side. I'll tell you Tony and the break. So you're okay. Thank you. You're welcome. Daily Gambit is next and we'll find out what happened to jazz chisel. That'll bring you back on 97.3 of the fan. I'm tired of fine lines and wrinkles. Durham McLaren has the solution. Thank you. Thank you, there. Pirate Steve. Pirate Steve. It was dodgeball. Oh, sorry. Don't know the dodgeball references. Have you never watched dodgeball? Haven't. Okay, we were doing a segment in the winter. Are you going to tell me that it's a great movie? We're going to do a segment in the winter you are where Chris is going to have me make me watch something I haven't watched and I'm going to make Chris watch something he hasn't watched and dodgeball is going to be on that list. Good. Oh, we got great movie on the chat. There you go. I bet. Yeah. Every movie you've ever seen is a great movie. It's true. I got the pottery starting lineup here, but and we have a daily gambit, but who can do any of that while we're on the edge of our seat waiting to find out what happened to jazz chism of the Yankees. Thank you very much, Chris. Jazz chism exited the game last night and he is likely Aaron Boone is saying that he is headed to the IL with a left UCL injury. They are determining the severity of it. Surgery will be needed, but bad news for the Yankees because jazz chism came in blazing. He came flying out of the gate for the Yankees, right? Well, he had like four home runs in their first three games. I don't know if he's done anything since then, but he won't be doing anything else in the near future. Yeah. For the Yankees. Scrappy will now give you a quick check. All right. I'll give you a check of the pottery starting lineup leading off as Louisa rise. He's back at the DH spot tonight. He's leading the National League in hitting despite a record of an average of only 305. Jerk some pro far is batting second. He's in the high two nineties. He's under 300 now, but still right there in the top two or three in the batting race. Jake Croninworth is batting third at first base. Manny Machado after night off. Didn't look like he had a night off because Donovan Solano looked like him at third base last night. He really did. My goodness. Manny will be back in there batting cleanups, Andrew Bogart's fifth. Some kid named Jackson Merrill is batting six. I hope he does well to me. Yeah, it'd be nice to see him, you know, kind of introduce himself to the fans here. David Paralta continues to quietly, you know, get it done for the large part in right field. Hassan Kim. Hassan's still without a home run since June. Almost had one course on Sunday in Miami, but that didn't happen as it turned out. And, you know, the slump is there for Hassan Kim. I hate to say down to about two 27. Now I noticed last night has an advantage in the batting average. Kyle Higashyoka's batting ninth. Higashyoka, by the way, almost hit another three run homer last night. He missed it by about a foot. You're right in the eighth inning. You're right. Michael King is on the mound for the Padres. Luis L Ortiz will pitch for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He faced the Padres last week in Pittsburgh. Do we need to pirate lineup? We do not. We're not going to get it. Let's get to today's daily gambit instead. Do you like money? I think about money a lot. Do you like money without doing anything? Da, winning. Do you want to make money while watching sports? I think Washington is immortal luck. Washington, woohoo. If you answer yes, this is your segment. Just don't blame us when you lose. Nothing is ever your fault. It's your game. Take it. Gwen and Chris go through the top bets of the day in the Daily Gambit on 97.3. The fan daily sports bag segment here on Gwen and Chris. Please everybody gamble responsibly. We made some bets last night. We will review those bets. However, Chris, I'm going to retweet something from at 97.3. The fan SD. We have our eliminator challenge has been set up and I found a website that's going to be able to take everyone and that's ESPN. So I tweeted out earlier, but if you are interested in playing the eliminator challenge for the NFL season, go to at 97.3. The fan SD and sign up for it. Basically, here's the rules. You have to pick one team each week. Once you pick them, you cannot pick them anymore. If your team wins, you move on. If your team loses, you are out and that includes even if you lose in week one. So lots on the line every single week, Chris. Well, I'm in it. You're in it. Tony will be in there. I think a lot of people from the radio station will be in it. So if you want to get in the eliminator challenge, have some fun with us throughout the football season. Make sure you sign up at 97.3. The fan. I did want to say one thing in defensive jazz chisom. He did hit four home runs in his first three games of the Yankees. He did go on to hit three more home runs for the Yankees to finish with seven in 14 games. So he did awfully do awfully well for them, but that does hurt. They lose him now to the knee injury. We'll see how serious. I think it's a low injury. UCL is that way. Sorry. Yobo. Yes. Yeah. All right. Here are our bets from last night. I made a parlay and it would be over four and a half Joe Musco strikeouts. We could stop right there because he only had one on the net. One strike out for Joe. He wasn't going. He wasn't going for the whiffs last night. No, he was not. We'll move on. Padres minus one and a half on the run line over the pirates. Both of us picked the Padres. Both of us were wrong because the Padres won, but they only won by one run to. Yeah. As it turned out, that ball that got past Jay Conan worth and scored the pirate run two outs determined the wager. There you go. Picture. There's a lot of people on casino floors in Las Vegas last night. Anger screaming or angry. Yes. One of the other at that play. The game last night over under eight runs total. We both went over and obviously we're well short of that with only three runs. Shota Iminaga for the Cubs over under six and a third innings pitch last night. Chris said over. I said under. He went five. I said over. I thought I said under. I wrote it under. Okay. But I could have said over and just remember if you have it, you're pretty good. I'm not an Iminaga fan. So I'm pretty sure I did under. Okay. Dodgers and Milwaukee over under eight runs in that game, you went under. I went over. You were correct because the score was five to two Dodgers. Kershaw pitched well. He did. All those people are trying to give up on Kershaw. Don't go too fast on that. Yankees were favored by one and a half runs over the White Sox last night. I suggested that they should be favored by two and a half or three and a half. Yes. And both of us went Yankees thinking this was an easy one. The White Sox broke out last night. 12 runs. 18 hits. They went 12 to we lose the bat. Who did they get? Seven of those runs off of any idea. Listen. Yeah. Sorry about that, Danielle. Yeah. We really did. Yeah. Oh, well, we knew we just, you know, it was, it was hard to watch. I don't think Padre fans miss any other data. I don't think so either. Yeah, I don't think so either Braves and Giants. We had more strikeouts in the game. Chris Dale or Blake Snell. Both of us with Snell Zilla. We were close, but sale. And he had 12 and Blake Snell had 11. Oh, that would have been a heartbreak loss right there in the betting world. I was two and four last night. You were one on five. Oh, wow. Sorry. Was that bad? I didn't realize that last night. Let's see if we can turn it around tonight as we go to the Yankees again. One and a half over the White Sox. You can't possibly bet the White Sox to beat him again. Can you? I'll take the Yankees. What are you doing? I'm going to take the Yankees. They're not going to have 12 runs, two games of the rows. All right. So we'll see a turic school ball. Okay. One of the A. L. saw young favorites, eight strikeouts tonight, over under in his matchup on the Hill. He's facing. Let me see. The Seattle Mariners, who do strike out a lot if I recall when they were in town, remember their beat writers said they struck out like endlessly. And Julio Rodriguez was in a major slum. Yeah. And then he went ahead and he got on. Yeah. Right. Who do you like here? Uh, eight strikeouts over under the trade deadline. I really have not paid attention to anything that he's been. So I'm just going to say that he is over over. Okay. Because of that, I'll say under. But he's been pretty good. The the A. L. saw young from what I'm hearing because I don't follow this closely as you know. Yeah. It's going to come down to either school or our old friend, Seth Lugo. Oh, I hope Lugo win. And Lugo's pitching tonight for the Royals. He is six and a third innings over or under in his matchup. And that is at Minnesota against the twins. I will support Seth Lugo over all those six and two thirds is a lot these days. It is. But he's been going pretty deep into games. I thought he has. Um, gonna support. I'm gonna go under. I think you're not supporting him. Okay. Not supporting him tonight. Doesn't mean he's L.A. Dodgers are one and a half over Milwaukee. Last night, I went to Dodgers way tonight. Scrabby. What do you think in Milwaukee? I'm gonna go for the brew crew. Come on. Brew crew. Give us a little help. Would you please need some? Come on, man. We'll take Milwaukee here for sure. Now, two on the Padre game over under eight runs tonight. Padres and pirates over under eight over under eight. This is going to be over tonight. The that would ever happen with Jake Woodford last night is not happening tonight with Luis Ortiz. We say that a lot. I know we do, but the Padres are going to hit tonight. So you say over saying over. I'm gonna go under just to get one back. Interesting. Okay. And then Michael King over under six innings for him tonight. Starting for the Padres. Michael King is an interesting one because he does sometimes rack up the pitches early in games. Mm hmm. I'm gonna say he goes over. You're gonna say over anyway. Yes. You just said you made you made a statement. I know you're going under. I know. I don't want to cheer against him. So I'm not cheering against him, but I'm still saying under Michael King can pitch really well and still get taken out after five and two thirds innings. The stream seems like sometimes he's just sailing along. He's doing great striking everybody out and then it looks over and here comes Mike Schilt and the look on Mike King's Michael King's faces. Oh no. Like really? Like really? You're not taking me out now. I mean, it was last week he started out the game. I think he struck out the first two batters against the pirates and then there was the Bryce Johnson air and then he threw like 30 more pitches in that inning. That hurt him last week. All right. I'll say under. There's our picks today. Hopefully we'll do a little better than we did last night. What up against a quick break? When we come back, Chris is fantabulous sports game show. No, the rivalry resumes between Scraeby and Tony next on Gwen and Chris. All right. Welcome back to Gwen and Chris. Chris fellow Tony and juniors out of Petco Park. He's running back and forth, but he's coming right back here shortly because he and Scraeby are going to play a round of Chris's fantabulous sports game show. That is coming up momentarily about time for Scraeby to post a victory over Tony Gwen Jr. Yeah, it would be about time. It'd be nice if you could do it. We'll see what happens. Would be in the in the game that's coming up. I want to give everybody an opportunity right now to win a pair of tickets to see two great bands at Petco Park. One is deaf leopard. One is journey. All right. I'm trying to come up with the definitive trivia question for this. Okay. I'm not really coming up with it. It's okay to just give them away. Really? I think so. Never stop believing. Oh, no, don't stop believing. That's the word. That's the name of the song. All right. I don't know. Just give them away. 11th call. If you're struggling. Yeah, I want to give it to the 11th caller. Okay. I usually I'm really fun and cool, but I don't have it right now. Save that clip. So the 11th caller at 833-288-0973 will win tickets to see deaf leopard and journey. It's time to play one of our favorite games of the week. All right! We like to call it. Ooh, I'm a goon. Carissa is fantabulous sports game show. It starts right now on nine seven three the fan. And hi, how are you? All you beautiful people out there. Welcome to the fantabulous sports game show. I am Mr. Elo and we are ready to play today with well neither player as the reigning champion of the fantabulous sports game show. That's right. Adam Klug took the last title, a non-sports related game. Yeah, thanks for doing that when I was there. Well Scrabby out. We did a little geography neither Tony nor Adam was able to come up with the fact that Nebraska and Montana are located west of the Mississippi. Are you kidding me? I would have known that in the heartbeat. Yeah, maybe. And then maybe you would have forgotten a different state. Anyway, went into a tiebreaker. Adam prevailed in an exciting tiebreaker. But that's neither here nor there because it's back to the contest that we all love. Matt Scrabby versus Tony Gwen Jr. And we're going to get right to it. I'll give the category today. They will name answers going back and forth. If you get one wrong, you get a strike, three strikes and you're out there are 20 points up for grabs today on 16 different correct answers. But some of them are repeated answers. And if you get those, you will score more points. So those will be ones you will try to target. What is the category again? I haven't given the category. I'm keeping everybody in a bit of suspense. You can play along out there. See how well you do. This is not a creative category today. Straight up, right in your face, name the Major League Baseball Players that have won MVP awards over the last 10 seasons. Name the Major League Baseball Players American and National League that have won MVP awards over the last 10 seasons. That means 2014 through 2023. All right. So you have 10 seasons. Thus 20 points because there's 10 on each side. Scrabby, you want to go first or second in today's category. I'm going to go second today. That's not a good move because you just gave him three points. He's going to take the first answer and score three points. You want him to do that? No, I don't. Oh my God. He is not smart at all, Tony. There you should never lose to this guy, honestly. What the heck? He struggles. All right, go ahead, Tony, your first. Scrabby said, no, no, no, no, no. I want Tony to go now. Don't go ahead, Scrab. Okay. Show you Tony. Show you Tony. That's where two points actually won the MVP award in 23 and 21. So Scrabby takes a 2-0 lead. Tony's turn. Scrabby, you're unbelievable. He has already thrown me off. Throwing you off. How are we throwing you off? I'll take Michael Trout. Mike Trout's a better one to take. You know why he didn't come to mind because he's never played. Well, he played in 2019, 2019, and 2004, or 2019, 16, and 14. He won the MVP all three times. So Tony takes a 3-2 lead. So even though you went first, you still boxed up the strategy. Scrabby, it is your turn. Who would you like to select now? Aaron Judge. Aaron Judge. One-time winner 2022. That is worth a single point for you. That ties things up at 3-3. And now it is Tony's turn. How about perhaps the greatest right-handed hitter of all time? Miguel Cabrera. Miguel Cabrera. That is good. After 2014? That is going to be a buzzer for Tony Guin Jr. and Miguel Cabrera did not win an MVP award in the last 10 years. I went 2012. Yeah, I think he went 12 and 11 or 13 anyway. That's 12 or 13. I messed up on the date. So Tony Guin Jr. getting a little more interesting. Kyle, he's getting a little cocky now. He's getting cocky now. He's got a strike. Scrabby does not have a strike, and we're tied 3-3. Come on, Scrabby. I'm going to take my guy from last year. Ronald Acuna Jr. Ronald Acuna Jr. a safe pick, but correct, and gives you the lead 4-3. There's still one two-time winner remaining. Everybody else won at once. Tony Guin Jr. It is your selection. Trailing by a single point now. How about this one? Clayton Kershaw. Clayton Kershaw sneaky. 2014 just sneaks in there. He did win the MVP 10 years ago this season, and that ties it back up for Tony. It is Scrabby 4. It is Tony 4, and Scrabby, it is your turn with 11 correct answers remaining. Now I'm getting a little weird. You're getting a little weird. It's in the last 10 years. Every AL player that's ever played is not coming to mind. No, you have National League as well. Okay, what about Mookie Betts? Mookie Betts. A little bit of Mookie. American League MVP in 2018. That is correct for the Boston Red Sox. Mookie Betts won it. And Scrabby goes ahead now. Five to four. Nine points have been taken. 11 points left. 10 correct answers. Tony Guin Jr. How about one Bryce Harper? There's the other guy that won twice. Tony takes him off the board with a two-pointer. He won once for Philadelphia in 2021. He won once for Washington in 2015. So Tony has taken a 6-5 lead, but Tony does have a strike against him. Scrabby is your turn 7-8-9 answers remaining. Oh gosh. Nine correct answers remaining for you to choose from here. MVPs and major league baseball the last 10 years. Whoa, whoa, hello. Wow, don't get hurt. Christian Ellis better be right after that discovery. It is cool. He just binged in. Talk about cocky. Well, just rang the bell before I told you it was right. Well, because I knew it was right. Oh, I see. Okay. Because on that on that will be the show. It shows accomplishments. And I remembered it said MVP. Sorry. Sorry that I'm here to interrupt the game for you. We are tied at 6-6. Tony has a strike and it is Tony's turn to name an MVP in the last 10 years. Eight correct answers remain on the board. Cody Bellinger, Cody Bellinger, Los Angeles Dodgers 2019. Tony Gwen Jr. is very good at this. Yeah, yeah, let's give him a 7-6 lead. In fact, he gave away a strike on purpose today. He did not feeling so giddy about saying that or gear for that matter. So Scrabby, you need one to tie it back up. There are still plenty of correct answers. Seven remaining that are MVPs over the last 10 years. Oh, give you a clue. There are four in the National League left and there are three in the American League left of that should help you in any way shape or form. Remember, you can play out there along. See how many you can get. Scrabby's thinking hard here, trying to avoid his first strike. He's trailing seven to six. Oh, Tony is goading him on in the background. Oh, oh, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. I didn't bring it because I wasn't sure. Well, it's not correct. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is not yet won an MVP award. He did. That's why he got his dad. I believe won one. But, um, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. not yet quite an MVP. I think he won a home run derby. Oh, yeah, there we go. Scrabby's got his first strike. Tony's got a 7-6 lead with seven correct answers remaining. Tony, your turn. How about Freddy Freeman? Freddy Freeman. I was just ripping him off. I wasn't sure. 2020 with the Atlanta Braves. Freddy Freeman did take an MVP trophy. Oh, that one doesn't count. That is Tony Gwen Jr. an 8-6 lead. How did he get so far ahead? Well, he had a two pointer with Bryce Harper and that was a he had a three pointer with with Mike Trapp. I'm still kind of angry. You know, this would have been a much better category for Adam than it would have been for me. I would have loved the geography category. Why are you living in the past? Because I'm losing it. I'm going to get smoked just like you get smoked. I don't know. Adam's got Adam's got a little bit better memory for stuff like this, especially when it comes to States and sports. 8-6 is the score. You guys said just bickering back and forth here as the game goes on. 8-6, one strike a piece. Scrabby, three in the National League, three in the American League, MVP winners in the last 10 years. You need to come up big right here. What about Jose Ramirez? What about Jose Ramirez? He certainly should have won one right now. He should have. He certainly has not. Unfortunately, Jose Ramirez is a strike two for straight. At least I'm throwing out a good guess. You're guessing a guy. If you do say so yourself failing to realize that an incorrect answer is never truly a good guess. But that is for us. Jose Ramirez is probably one of the better players not to win an MVP award. Oh my gosh, I'm an idiot. 8-6 for Tony. Aaron Tony to extend on your lead. How about Paul Goldschmidt? Just a couple of years ago, Paul Goldschmidt of the St. Louis Cardinals did win the NL MVP 2022. I mean, he's talking about coming out of nowhere. I mean, he did and he got it. So it is 9-6 now. Tony's bravado is showing through here as we get late in the game. Scrappy needs one to avoid elimination. And is he going to come up with it? Probably not. Let's see. You got five correct answers remaining. Well, I wanted to say Buster Posey, but I think it was before 2014. So I'm not going to be. Maybe not. I think it might have been 2012, 2011. Tony's really helping you over here. Why don't I just go with the guy who everybody thinks is great. But we think is mid. Paul Scienes? No. No one Aaron Otto. Nolan Aaron Otto for the game. Tony, do you want to tell him what happened here? That's the ballgame. It is three strikes. Scrappy is out. Tony Guggenier returns to the championship chair in Christmas fantabulous sports game show today. I hate this game. Five correct answers went unsaid. Tony, how many of those would you like to name just for fun? John Carlos Statin. He won it with the Marlins in 2017. That is correct. How about Jose Altuve? Don't take my shirt off. Maybe you should have got that. Jose Altuve, one of your favorite guys. He did also win in 2017. I know I've been streaming in 2020. Didn't I wasn't a brave you in that in the American League side? How about that? Jose, a brave you. Never guessed that. One of the worst players in Major League Baseball history. What? 71 MVP. That's a little mean. Yeah, I was going to say the guy won an MVP. But after that, my goodness that he flame out. Yeah. Did we say Chris Bryant? No. Scrappy forgot his guy Chris Bryant. Yeah, there was Chris Bryant. Who went on the disabled list again yesterday. No way. Yeah, just to upset you even more. There's only one more guy that you haven't named. You guys have done awfully well. 2015 American League winner. Josh Donald. Oh, yeah. I put that one out of my head. Yeah, Josh Thomas. All right. So Tony wins the Fantabulous Sports Game Show today. 9 to 6 was the score. You know, I played myself today because I really did. You know what I did? You mentally shot yourself. I knew this was never going to happen. I wasn't. I was a drinker in the earlier part of the 10 year span. So a lot of that was fuzzy. But I studied. I studied Rookie of the Year winners today. You did. That was going to be the category. You thought it was going to go with Rookie of the Year winners. I thought that would have been almost impossible to this. We did not do that. It was. It would have been. Yeah. All right. Scrappy comes up short despite his best effort. Your chance to play trivia is coming up next. Little Chris versus the fan dialing in is the music. Just what? What's going on over there? It's loud. It's soft. It's fast. It's slow. I try to give you the phone number, but I don't think you'd be able to hear it out there. Just dial in to play trivia. Heading into the four o'clock hour here on Gwen and Chris. Chris Ello. Tony Gwen Jr. Victoria's in the Fantabulous Sports game show once again. Max Scrappy, a loser. He is alongside here in the Odyssey Palace. You know, you kind of get on me a little bit sometime in the Fantabulous game shows about the categories I pick. Yeah. But you have to admit that I've tried a variety of different categories. Maybe today wasn't your best. And it was right up Tony's alley. He is so good on baseball stuff. But Tony's running away from the mic right now. He'll be back in a little bit. But yeah, I didn't expect you'd have a good chance to win today. But I just can't. I'm, you know, we've done a lot of topics. I know. I know you wasted one when I was out of town. I really think you could have won that one with the West of the Mississippi. Just tell everyone what happened in the break with me. Oh, right. Yeah. I gave you, I tried to see if you could come up with the seven states that were east of the Mississippi. And I rattled them off with two names faster than you got them on. You did very well. All right. Well, maybe one day we'll do another geography one. You did lose the first geography one. Tony came up with the country of Hungary and knocked you off in that particular category. So still irks me because he gets Russia as a European country. And he got it. I think that was a big argument. Yeah, there was a lot of controversy that day. All right. We're going to get into some crisps versus the fans. There's usually some controversy during that. If you want to play dial in eight, three, three, two, eight, eight, eight, eight, eight, eight, seven, three, by the way, quick congratulations to Steve. Yes. You told me to remind you yesterday. And I didn't remind you, but I'm reminding you now, you told me a great story about somebody and the first time player. Oh, that was actually last week. It was last week. We never told this on the air and I think it's worth telling. It is. Hold on. Let me pull it up in last week's rundown because it is worth telling. I forgot who the guy's name was, but he was a listener to the show. Yes. And here it is. Oh, you got it. T. Roy Green. Okay. T. Roy. Thank you so much. He's a big listener. Aspiring producers out there. Never delete your rundowns because you never know when you're going to need to know when you might need it. T. Roy, thank you so much for listening. But his story was great. Yes. It says, I work in an emergency room here in San Diego in the admitting department, admitting department. We had a paramedic come in today and he said, it's my first time here. And I don't know why, but I yelled out first time player. And I just wrote back like a hundred ha ha ha ha ha. That was awesome. Because that is hilarious. And I appreciate you telling me about that T. Roy. Thank you T. Roy. Thanks for listening. And if I miss stories like that, please send them to me because I love hearing stories like that. It's hilarious. Don't get too caught up in the show though, guys. You are in the emergency admin admin room. We need you to be alert down there. But it is first time. Playa. I love it. That was funny. Good job remembering this. Very good. We also have to hear the story about Adam Kluge's son meeting. Putting me in my place last night. Meeting you at the game. He put him in my place last night. Go for it. While we're, while we're, no? No, I'm going to hold up on that one for a minute. But Adam Kluge's son put me right back to square one. And it's hilarious. Yeah. It's really funny. He did. All right. Here we go. Question or contestant number one. Raul. Hello, Raul. Raul. Hey. What's up? Hey, what's up? I'm playing on cue right there. Going to question number two. Go ahead and the question number two. Here it is. Name all five of the Olympic ring colors. My goodness. Red, green, yellow, black and blue. Wow. Nice. Did he get it? He did. Beautiful, Raul. That's not an easy question. No, not an easy question. Hey, I got my daughter right here. What's your daughter's name? Her name is Emma. Emma. All right. All right. Dad. He's got one more for the title. Yeah. Here we go. Question number three. If you don't mind me asking how old is Emma? And is she a Carrie Underwood fan? Is that possible? I'm not sure. But she just turned nine. Her birthday was just last weekend. All right. Happy birthday to her. Happy birthday for sure. She might like a little Carrie Underwood. If you get this question right, let's see. Yes. Here we go. Here we go. One player in brave history played for the Boston Braves, the Milwaukee Braves, and the Atlanta Braves. Which player was this? Repeat that one more time. One player in Braves history played for the Boston Braves, the Milwaukee Braves, the Atlanta Braves. Which player was this? Played for all three teams. Sorry. No. Hey, he's going with hammer and Hank. Stay there. He's got a chance to win. Oh, I thought you knew this just by the look on the face. I don't know it for sure. I have a I think I have a pretty good guess, though. Okay. And it's another long time brave. And I did get I know we played in Milwaukee, and I know we hung on long enough to play in Atlanta. I just don't know that he began soon enough to play in Boston, but I'm going to go with Eddie Matthews. Sorry about that. Sorry, Ralph. Sorry. Very good, though. Happy birthday to Emma, nonetheless. Yes. And you guys definitely play again. Absolutely. All right. Here we go. Let's go to Nick. Nick, you're up next. How are you? Good. First time play? You got two in a row. I love it. I know. I love this. I'm working the phones over here. Oh, boy. Here we go. Question number two, Nick. In bowling, what number is assigned to the back right pin? Ten? Ten is correct. Wow. This is bowling. I did not. Thus, the seven, ten split. The seven is in the left corner, the ten is in the right corner. Yes, no, and it makes total sense now. So now you never thought about it. Yeah, well, right. He moves on to the final question. He does. Question number three, Nick. Here we go. By the way, your brand is now up on NFL Network, the one that you don't think's going to happen. All right. If NFL Network is addressing it, then I think there's some smoke there, but it still says have a deal on potential trade. Okay. You might still have hope to keep him. All right. Here we go, Nick. Question number three. Who was the first Texas Ranger pitcher to throw a perfect game? Texas Ranger pitcher to throw a perfect game. Yeah. Mm-hmm. There was one. Lots of legendary pitchers have come through Texas. No, there hasn't. Texas Ranger. I'll say no, Ryan, but I don't need a check. No, Ryan is a great guess anytime you need one of these. The Texas Rangers. I don't even know. They had a perfect game. The Rangers. Was it the gambler? Who's that? Kenny Rogers. Sorry. I pulled it out. I remembered it. I love that. His name is Kenny Rogers, by the way. Kenny Rogers is the gambler. They call him the gambler. Wow. Okay. Well, sorry about that. That's right back in our place. Here we go. Julie, you're up next. Hello, Julie. Hello. Hey, Julie. Are you ready to play? Oh, yeah. Okay. Have you, have you played before? No, I'm a first-time player. You got to make the big pronouncement about that, Julie. Yes. Here we go, Julie. Question number two. You're on to number two. All right. I'm going to give you some choices here, but in ounces, how much does a hockey puck weigh? Is it two ounces, nine ounces, eleven ounces, or six ounces? How much does a hockey puck weigh? How much does a hockey puck weigh? Yes. Two ounces, nine ounces, eleven ounces, or six ounces? I'd probably say six ounces. Six ounces is correct. I had no idea that you knew, Julie. That's great. We are going to question the three. Well done. We got some good second or first-time players today. We guess we do. Here we go. Question number three. Here we go. Here we go. I think hockey pucks might weigh a little more once they're frozen. We're not going down that road. Okay. No, I'm just saying when they play them, when they use them, they're frozen. But originally, they started six ounces. I see. So they're a little bit heavier? Yeah, she got it. She's good. Here we go. This is a tough one, but here's question number three. What player was the first to have a 50 double 50 home run season in baseball? This happened in 1995, first player to have 50 doubles and 50 home runs in one season? Let's see. Wow. 1955, you said, right? Yeah, 1995. 1995. 1995. Let's see. I don't know. Oh, that's a good way to play the game. Just stay right there, Julie. I don't know if Chris knows this. He does. I feel bad for her because she's a good contestant. But that was a bad boy, Albert Bell, Cleveland Guardians. Hey, Julie, please call back and play again, though. Play again. You were close. You're close to the title. Oh, so polite. I know that was a big deal when he did that 50 50 because very few people in the history of the sport have had 100 total 100 extra base hits in one year. It's very, very hard thing to do. Interesting. I didn't think about that. Yeah. Albert Bell had a 50 50 year. All right. Let's go to Steve in San Diego. Steve. Hello. Hello. Are you ready to play Steve? All right. Yeah. All right. Here. My first player. Oh, wow. First time play. This is first. I didn't even set this one up. Here we go, Steve. Question number two. What did you say? Let's do over and under. Oh, that's all right. That's the type of type right here. Not to that yet. Babe Ruth wore the number three. Why did he wear that number? Because it was his favorite number. It's a great answer. It's an amazing answer. It's unfortunately incorrect. Chris, do you know? Yes. Because you batted third in the lineup. That's how they used to do it back down. I'm sorry, Steve. Thank you. All right, Steve. That's why Lou Gehrig wore number four. Etc. Etc. Is it evil of me to say it's tiebreaker, tiebreaker. Steve just missed his tiebreaker. I mean, we got to 415. I think it's tiebreaker. Give me a player, Chris. Todd Helton. Oh, okay. Speaking of guys that had 100 extra base hits in a season, Todd Helton once had 105. Okay. That's a ton of extra base hits. His baseball reference picture is so weird without the beard. Okay. All right. Let's go to Arnold in Miramesa. Arnold, you're going to be playing the tiebreaker. How are you today? All right. Okay. I'm ready. You're ready. Here we go. Chris, how many RBIs did Todd Helton have in his career? Oh, man, that's a lot. I bet you. 1700. 1700. Arnold, is the actual answer higher or lower? Lower. Lower. Arnold is correct. Nice job, Arnold. I need to get to leave five. How many have 1400? Really? 1,406. Not as many as I thought. No, and you stay right there and let me get your information. If you look at his career, he had one, two, three, four, five straight seasons with over 100 RBIs in those seasons and then never did it again. Yeah. Todd Helton still had some remarkable numbers. 96, 79, 91. Couldn't have all been Coorsfield, but certainly was better Coorsfield than he was on the road. Finally, inducted into the baseball hall of fame. We'll take a break. Check some traffic. When we come back, we've been getting this question a lot today. So I'm going to answer it for you. What's the question? The question is, hey, Chris, why doesn't Mike Shilt switch Jake Croninworth and Jackson Merrill in the batting order? Thank you. Since Jackson Merrill been a whole lot better. Thank you. I'll answer it. And they're both lefties. I'm still going to answer it. Okay. When we come back on Gwen and Chris, you love Mediterranean food like I do trisperos for authentic Mediterranean cuisine, both Cornado or La Jolla. Even better if you're headed to the ball game tonight, Spiro's at Petco Park right there on the main concourse, third base foul line near the Western Metal Supply Company building for dining or take out options, visit spiro's cuisine dot com. All right, potters and pirates coming up pregame show, Sam Levitt, little after five 30. That's the eco water so cow pregame show with Sam Levitt saw Sam last night running around Petco Park. He is he's popular. Oh, yeah, he is popular. Everybody. Everybody wants a moment of Sam Levitt's time. Oh, yes. And you know, like I feel like I should get a few moments of his time and he doesn't have time for me. He actually leaves the press box. He does. Yeah, he goes in. Well, he's he's wanted all over the ballpark. I don't know how he even keeps track of anything. And then of course, after the game's over, he's down on the field. He's shooting camera interviews. He's doing everything. And then it's the Sammy Levitt's sprint to the third story, the Western Metal Supply Company building for the post game, which I've done. And that is impressive. Yeah. From the Padre dugout to the third base side level three of the Western Metal Supply Company is a hike. It is. And Sam Levitt makes it in, you know, Sam Levitt looks like Tom Cruise repelling down the building. He's so fast. I did that one time and I took the elevator and I got up to the table and I was setting up. I was just your wrench. Yeah. And I was supposed to do a show at that point. I asked one of my golfing guys today. They said, did you see the Tom Cruise thing? And one of the other guys said, no, I didn't see it. Was it stupid? And my friend said, yeah, it was stupid. That was pretty much the whole conversation. Oh, and I got stupid? Yeah, it was stupid. So there you go. I don't know if it was or not, but there you that was the rating. Whatever. That was the rating they gave. I got crushed in my DMs yesterday for saying that Tom Cruise only made $20 million a movie. And for the record, all those people who crushed me, I was saying that was his salary for the movie, not what he is. Oh, yeah. That's the low end. Yeah. That's the low end. You think Tom Cruise only makes $20 million? What kind of world do you live in, bro? Speaking of getting crushed on Twitter and DMs, and then I'll explain why Jackson Merrill is not batting third. Talk to and I'm here. I always sound like I'm dropping names, but I am. I talked to Mike Winters again last night. Oh, you, you, you world friends, Mike Winters best friends. World friends. And he was telling me about how he was called by Sam Levitt after the controversial play Sunday in Miami. And then he went on the post game show. Yeah. And you know, then he explained, you know, why the call was made. Mike Winters is a former and national league and major league baseball umpire for 20 seasons. Did some world series. Pretty good source on this subject. Anyway, he goes, so I went back and I listened to it and he goes, I was really happy about it. And I kind of posted it on Twitter. And, you know, if you need to hear here, I was on with Sam Levitt, et cetera. All right. I don't know if he posted, but he was looking on Twitter. Yeah. We saw it that Sam posted it. That's what it was. He goes, then I made the mistake of looking at some of the comments. Oh, don't look at the comments, Mr. Winters. And because Mike Winters explained why the ruling went against the Padres, he said the comments about him personally, like made his jaw drop. It's wild. He was like, really? This is what people comment and say on Twitter, just because I went on and explained the rule. Yep. And did you tell him? Yeah, I did. And I'd like to repeat a few of the things that people wrote about Mike Winters on the comment. The FAA will not allow it. The the F the Federal Aviation Administration. The F what is the FCC? The FCC. Actually, I don't think the FAA would allow it either. It was that bad. Well, so he learned a lesson that I learned very long ago. And I still touched the hot stove, which is looking at the comments. Yeah, just leave the comments be. Yeah, that's a good story, though. Yeah. Mike did a great job explaining the rule, not his fault that that's the rule. Mike Winters, you're a there are still people out there that think the reason the Padres lost that game is because the padding was out of sorts. I know. Get over it. All right, Jake Croninworth. Once again, batting third tonight, Jackson Merrill is in the sixth spot. People want to know why? After all, Jackson Merrill is red hot. He's got 17 homers, 289 average, 800 OPS. Croninworth has been cold. It's got 14 homers, 248 average, 724 OPS. So why don't they flip flop? They're both left handed batters wouldn't change anything, but it would really change a lot. And here's the answer to the question. They're doing it to protect Jackson Merrill. What Jackson Merrill is doing this year remains incredible. I love it. And it's one of the great stories of the season, but you don't want to mess with something that's working. And the fact of the matter is, Jackson Merrill batting sixth rather than being elevated to third just ahead of Manny right in the middle of the thing. This leaves the pressure off of him to just go do his thing. And as much as I want Jackson Merrill to win rookie of the year, and I think he should get it. And you know, I think that the one argument I've heard in favor of Paul Skeens is the fact that Jackson Merrill can just quietly do his thing on the Padres because there's other superstars around him. Whereas Paul Skeens is the Pittsburgh Pirates. He's the whole show. When the train, when the, you know, the train pulls into the station, everybody's there to see Paul Skeens. Yes. And he's the everything, all the pressure, all the eyeballs are on him. So he's performing in a different setting. Jackson Merrill, meanwhile, let's go do your thing. Remember, he started the season batting ninth. Yeah, he went up to eighth. Now he's up to sixth, but it's still much more relaxing to bat there than right in the middle and the heart in the three spot where you're expected. And crone north has more experience doing that. And also, Jake has shown he can get it done in that spot. He hasn't been getting it done lately, but I think that Mike Schultz is smart not to change them. And let me also say this, if I felt that it was smart to change them, you know, darn well, I would say so. Darn too. Darn too. But right now just leave Jackson Merrill alone. It makes sense. Don't mess with something like him. Somebody tweeted somebody texted in, you were chatted in said, Hey, don't if it ain't broke, don't fix it. That's pretty said that. Yeah, that's pretty right. That's pretty right. But it's mostly from the Jackson Merrill side. You want to protect him, let him just do his thing quietly and continue to amaze and astound. You know, Diesel says something interesting. I don't know if he meant it this way, but Jackson Merrill being where he's at ensures that he comes up in the game at the end of the game, you know, saying like instead of being the three spot, he's it has no thinning instead of the eighth inning. It has worked out that way. Although last night, he only got three at bats. He did not need a fourth. But you're right. It does seem like in the ninth inning, the last week or so, whenever they've been trailing, he's been coming up. Yep. And he's done. Okay. Done. Okay. Done. Okay. You know that his war now and you know how I hate war. Yeah. But his war is now the same as jerks and profiles. Wow. So Merrill has gone way up here in the last few weeks and deservedly so coming up, the Big Five, Tony returns to the program. Do not go anywhere. It's one hour away from Sam Levitt's eco water SoCal pregame show, Padres, pirates tonight at Petco Park, Cracello, Tony Virginia, Matt Scrabie, Gwen and Chris, time to check traffic here, gets you right into our Big Five. It's that time of the show when we check on the latest in sports, only the most important topics and questions are brought to light. Stop what you're doing and listen. These news stories will astound and amaze you. The one, the only. Oh my god. Who the hell cares? The Big Five starts now on 97 three, the fan. All right. Everything is good in Padres land, but everything is not good in the email inboxes at 97 three, the fan. Number five. So we're going to start with this one. And there was an exchange over email last night between us that I found kind of funny. Our boss, Adam said an email after the Padres game with Jackson Merrill video from pregame talking about Rookie of the Year. Adam says it got stuck in his email and it didn't send until much later, which I totally buy in every sense of the way. Then a few unnamed 97. If it happened to me, you would have bought it, but not Adam. I would, I would think it's still in your draft folder. Right. That's what I think it would be. Then a few unnamed 97 through the fan house replied to the email saying stop asking him about Rookie of the Year. Now I think two things can be true here. One, local media may over ask the question. And two, it's our job on this show to talk about where he is at on a day to day basis. So Tony, when is it appropriate to talk about Jackson Merrill and Rookie of the Year? I think it's how we're talking about it, right? We're talking about like there's a decision coming up here soon. There isn't. There's a quarter of the season. That's the first thing. Second thing is, I don't think it's necessarily the law. It's not the local media that's here all the time, right? Because those questions are asking for the folks who are here. They don't need to hear the answer again because they've already heard it. But you know, occasionally, you know, outlets will pop in necessarily on a daily basis. And so sometimes it gets regurgitated. I think the thing that makes this particular situation different is it's kind of a, it's kind of been, I don't want to say it's been pushed into the national kind of area. But because of the way skeins is pitched and the way Jackson is played here as late as of late, it's become a bigger topic than just local. And so I think we're just getting a lot of it because I've kind of all those things kind of combined. But I don't, the issue that I think that could be had is that we're asking who was the rookie of the year? And you just can't answer that question right now. And there's not as such thing as who was the rookie of the year right now. Because that ain't a thing. Now when he gets into the season, then we can have the conversation. Okay. Ben Ver, I didn't know if you're done. Ben Verlander said, everybody stop Jackson Merrill's rookie of the year. I think Ken Rosenthal said that as well. So Chris, when is it appropriate to talk about Jackson Merrill on the rookie of the year? Well, in the case of San Diego, where we have this, you know, complex that we are always forgotten and always overlooked. It's somewhat true. Maybe it's true. Maybe it's not. But we feel that way. So I guess for us, it's pretty appropriate to be talking about it almost on a daily basis. And if you look at the front of the San Diego Union Tribune today, the lead story is not about the Padres winning last night. The top story is a column written by Bryce Miller, where he talked to former rookie of the year, Fred Lin, San Diego resident. And Fred Lin said that Jackson Merrill should hands down be the rookie of the year. Attaboy Fred. So yeah, I agree with Fred. But this is obviously something we must feel like we need to do in San Diego. And I think that where we're where we're mistaking is like on this talk show, we're talking about it in the San Diego Tribune, they're writing about it. But the people in San Diego already think Jackson Merrill should be the rookie of the year, where we really need to get the word out. If we really, really want him to win it, we got to get some sort of national campaign going, because it's, I believe that he has helped start that. And that's the way it should happen. Last night, it's been organic. It's been organic. And I'll say this because I think Chris hit on something that I think is this kind of important. We're talking about it. And with all due respect to Fred, who I love. You can't say that it's hands. You know, that's what they were saying literally last month about Paul schemes is hands down his is his war to lose. Not even that. It was his award. It's kind of like the old tiny thing a couple years ago, where it was like, everybody just kind of his emphasis in like June. And now he ran away with it. But I just think that it's a dangerous game to play because God forbid Jackson go into a slow start. Or on the flip side, Paul schemes starts to struggle, right? Then you start to see these things pull away. You know, I think about often, I think about the year Russell Westbrook won the MVP up until like the last two weeks of the season. It was pretty determined that James Harden, I think, was winning that award. And then Russell Westbrook proceeded to win like a couple crazy games at the end and got his team into the playoffs at the very end of the season. And guess who ended up winning that MVP? It was Russell Westbrook. So you got to let the season play out. I think what everybody should be saying is Jackson Mariah has positioned himself great to win a National League rookie of the year. I'd say that he should be the rookie of the year hands down on August 13th is just it's just not honest. Yes, but if he doesn't win the rookie of the year, we in fact and San Diego are going to be feeling far more slighted than he's going to feel. That's it also. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, for sure. For sure. For sure. I mean, he was doing interviews last night on MLB Network with the, what was the inside the game or those were CC and. Well, look, Pittsburgh happens to be in town right now too. And their reporters are in the head to head. Right. You know, contest is as close as it's going to be. So that's another thing right now that's bringing it into the limelight. I'm also fighting against the MLB narrative that they want to happen, which is Paul Skeens is a golden child and he will win everything every time and strike out everyone. So they're gonna get lower. MLB doesn't crown golden child's in Pittsburgh. Just want to point that out. Okay. I don't have any argument and I need to move on with the conversation we had about Team USA basketball. It's Tony giggling over there. Like he got him. No, I wasn't thinking I got you. The conversation we had yesterday about Team USA basketball and the pro is playing instead of amateurs. The LA Olympics in 2028 are going to be the we'll have the first time flag football event. Michael Parst and said he wants to train for the Olympics after 2027. And we know Joe burrow, Patrick Holmes, Tyree kill and how you check even has the his resume sent out from the 2022 NFL Pro Bowl since he played in that flag football game. He says he's very good. Baseball is also in the mix for no announcement have been made about the event yet Chris should NFL players be allowed to play flag football in the 2028 Olympics over amateurs. Yes because the toothpaste is out the tube and it's all over the counter. So can't stick it back in there now. We've let the pros play basketball. We've let them play hockey and we basically have turned amateur athletes into pros with the kind of money that a lot of them can make. So I have no problem with this at all. The NFL players want to play. Let them out Tony. Should the NFL players be allowed to play instead of amateur players? Um yeah. I think so. I think Chris is right. It's going to be a beat down. The toothpaste. Tyree kill against like Trinidad and Tomago spread out with your with everybody's hands like it's like pushed is not even like near the tooth face. The tooth, the tooth we caught. The tube of the tooth. Yeah. It has got to move the way at this point. Yeah. All right. I mean look it can be that easy. Yeah but the dream team dominated you know early on in basketball and then the world caught up. So we'll see if the world can catch up in flag football. But yeah they're going to be a dream. I didn't mean to cut you off there. I guess I'm done. I'm a weirdo today guys as you know Colin Kaepernick spent six seasons in the NFL since he last played the NFL has played seven seasons without him and Kaepernick still wants back in. He said we're still training still pushing. He told Sky Sports. So hopefully we just got to get one of these team owners to open up. If he does get a chance to play pro football again what will it mean to him? He said I mean it's something I've trained my whole life for to be so to be able to step back on the field will be a major moment and major accomplishment for me. Also I think it's something that could bring I could bring a lot to a team and help them win a championship and quote Tony. Who gets a job first? Colin Kaepernick or Trevor Bauer? Really? I don't think he I mean yeah you're doing the way I thought you were going to go. At this point it'd probably be Trevor Bauer at this point. I mean I don't think he either were going to get one but Trevor Bauer is younger. He's closer to have being a player. Is that a couple of years removed as a Kaepernick? Seven years out now? Seven years removed. Wow. I just thought he'd be spared and he'll just be a machine. Yeah but I mean there's some muscle memory there that I mean that I'm sure this doesn't come back after six years off. Like I get it he's training and I was you know certainly wouldn't be against it but I just don't see that happen. I see Trevor being given an opportunity before Colin Kaepernick. Yeah Chris. For those who did not have a major problem with what happened around Colin Kaepernick they're probably amazed that he hasn't come back yet. For those that did have a problem a major problem with what happened surrounding Colin Kaepernick I got to believe even they're a little surprised that at this point we have not been able to move past it and forgive and forget but we haven't and so yeah I think seven years is too long. I think Trevor Bauer probably has a better shot but I'm going to go with neither. All right Colin Kaepernick will forever go down as one of the greatest 49er quarterbacks of all time. Let him to a Super Bowl, set some records. I'm glad you're feeling that way. Here we are. Number two. If Maleflor gets another question about whether the Packers have a true number one driver's receiver the cleanup crew is going to have a mess to deal with like I did with Lucky the other day. He said I want to vomit every time I hear number one receiver to be honest with you. It drives me crazy. That's something that you guys talk about. I feel like we've got a bunch of them end quote. The Packers didn't actually have a single catch last season by receiver with more than two years of NFL experience because everyone is so young on their roster but Green Bay went on to become the first team since the 1970 AFL NFL merger to make the playoffs and the youngest team I'm sorry. Jordan Love managed to throw over 4000 yards 32 touchdowns in his first full season. Chris does an NFL team need a true number one wide receiver. Apparently not. Green Bay Packers were not only in the NFC semifinals last year. They gave the 49ers a run for their money in the NFC semifinals. They destroyed the Cowboys and they destroyed as their wide receivers ran circles around the Cowboys defensive backs who look clueless to figure out what they were trying to do. I agree with Maleflor. I think he's bringing up a good point here. We think that there is such a thing as a number one wide receiver but I don't think coaches think that. Whoever's open is the number one wide receiver on the play and I think that's what NFL coaches and teams are most concerned with you know. So maybe in the in the diva world of some wide receivers and in the when it comes to you know money that a lot of them get paid but yeah I don't think coaches care about this kind of thing. They want to win the game and get the ball to zebra open. Tony does an NFL team need a true number one wide receiver. You had to know I was going to make you do that like the whole way through and not trying to know. I'm glad that you came up with another way to ask the question. Who are we kidding? Like that's not true. I don't believe Matt Lafleur at all. And here's why. I can go to targets on their team and someone has a lead. That there is the number one wide receiver because they're usually open the most and you're designing the play for them the most. So I get what he's trying to do here. He doesn't want to commit to saying someone's a number one wide receiver even on that team last year. Someone led the team in receptions. Someone led the team in yards. Those are probably your either your best receiver or your top two wide receivers on the team. So I think he might bomb it when he hears that question because it forces him to say one where did he have a problem calling Devontay Adams and number one receiver when he was there. I don't think so. I think he had. I think he was throwing the ball to him about like an 80% cliff. So yeah, I don't believe him on that. You know what this tells me? This tells me he doesn't have a good enough wide receiver for number one. I think he has a lot of guys and he doesn't want to slight any of them, which I think is a it's an okay thing to think that is too. You should probably go that kind of bunch of good young wide receivers. He doesn't want to slight anybody and make them feel like they're not number one. Hey Matt Lafleur has been a much better coach than I ever gave him a chance. We'll see. We'll see about his wide receiver crew this year. Okay. All right. Number one, we talked about the Padres and how they sometimes seem to play down to the level of their opponent. And I know we were talking about one game, but the Yankees were absolutely demolished by the White Sox yesterday, 12 to 2. The White Sox racked up a season high 18 hits while scoring those 12 runs. The Yankees fans are pretty angry about this loss because the White Sox have been so bad. And I know again, it's been it was just one game, but Tony, how bad of a loss is this for the Yankees? It's a bad, it's a bad one. On a day when you have asked mediocre questions at best, this one tops them off. What? And I'm just telling you that before he even answers. It's baseball. I said again, you know, one game. But that's the answer to the question. What is left for us to say? I challenge myself to come up with questions where you guys can't when you guys can't default to. It's only a game. It's one game. Well, you clearly did not take your own advice on this one. I said, well, I mean, I'll tell you, it's a terrible loss. It's a horrible loss. Yesterday, yesterday, it was a terrible loss. Today, it's going to be a terrible loss too. Today is just another loss. Just another loss. You know that we would be angry if the pot was lost. And I would be pulling the little bit of hair I had out if it did happen to us because everybody would be angry. The pot is got swept at home by the Rockies this year. You remember what happened with that? And the fallout was incredible. But what did it all really mean in the grand scheme of things? Baseball is 162 games. There is no way you're going to win more than 70% of those things, even against the worst teams. There is such a thing as a bad loss. And I said it's one game you could have just answered. Yeah, bad loss. I won't do that. Nope. I'm not giving into your decision. Chris knows Chris knows the game too much to say that it's, you know, it's a horrible loss. It was was if I was on New York radio, I'd be crushing them right now. I'm sure they are. So basically everybody who walks into Chicago, they should they should win, period. I mean, that's kind of how it's been going as of late. No, clearly not. They got 24 of them, right? Yes. But that's not the case. Like the last 25. Hey, that's not the question. All right. I hate when you guys do that to my questions. I sit there and sometimes think for 15, 20 minutes, how can I phrase this so that they can't default to something? There was no way to phrase that one. No, there was a bad loss. It was a bad loss. Perfect. You said it. Big five is over. Those are not mediocre questions. When we get back, gave to Padres Pirates. Well, we'll get you set up for it on 97 through the fan. Hey, welcome back to winning Chris. It is the happy hour. 501 is the time. We welcome you back to the program. Chris, although Tony going junior. Tana Peko Park. Matt Scravia alongside here in the Odyssey Palace studios. Tony is off now for the rest of the evening, getting ready for tonight's broadcast. He and Jesse Agler will have it for you beginning just after six 30, the Padres and the Pittsburgh Pirates Sam Levitt's equal water. So Cal pregame show jam-packed. As always, gets underway at about five 35 this afternoon. I want to take a moment to wish a happy anniversary out there to Lori Elo. I don't know. Lori Elo, happy anniversary from your husband, Chris Elo. I don't think your anniversary is until October. That's our wedding anniversary. Today is the anniversary of our first date. Many, many, many years ago, I'm doing this for Lori. Thank you. Please do it for her. She'd appreciate it. Now, is this a August 13th was the first day that we went out. It was a Saturday night back in the year that was. I'm not going to say what year it was because it ages us 1942 1942. Yeah, right. Sorry, Lori. It was a long time ago. But we are celebrating our first date anniversary today. So happy anniversary to us. And of course, to the lovely one out there, Lori, I'm not congratulations to you guys. I'm not saying it's a bad thing. Please don't. But did Lori remember this date or have you remembered it? We've always remembered it. We just always remembered it from the beginning right on through till now. What about both of us? What did you guys do? Did you already say that? It's a little crazy of a story, but she was, she was actually babysitting for some friends of ours, Halloween, the movie. I know. She was babysitting for some friends of ours. I offered to come over and barbecue. And so we knew the person, both of us knew the person who's how she was staying at. Anyway, they said, okay, they, you know, allowed me to go over. And so I, we barbecued. And that we had two kids with us, which was interesting because we never had that. But we had two kids with us on the night of our first, our first date. That's crazy. So congratulations to us. If you want to know exactly how many years ago it was, you need to know what number Joe Negro wore when he pitched for the Houston Astros. Of course, you make it a question like that. No, I gotta go look it up. Well, that's what I'm saying. If you're really that interested, you can go look it up. I am. Otherwise, and don't tell everybody. I'm not. You're gonna look it up, though. Are you really gonna look it up? Yeah. I can't see. I can't find a picture with this number though. There you go. You could be in trouble. Oh, there it is. There you know. Yeah, that's how long and many years ago it was. Shout out to Jackson's parents. Parents were anniversary today of 35 years. Jackson Jackson. Jack's Jack. Just a. Chatted A. X. Chatted in. Yes. Happy anniversary to you guys out there. Correct. Correct. August 13th. Can you tell before we forget? Can you tell the story about Adam Clue's son? Oh, yes. Last night I go to the ball game by myself, which I often do go sit up in the press box, hang out, say hi to everybody. Hang out with Mike Winters. Take out with my friend Mike Winters. And so we drop, yeah, drop names. Anywhere walking through the press. There's a, there is a little press entrance there for the media. Yeah. So we don't have to stand in the long line of all the fans. Sorry about that. It's there. Yeah. One of the perks. One of the perks that we get. And sometimes that line is long. Sometimes that can be a little lengthy, but last night it was not. Like everybody else, we have to run our, you know, phone and wallet and everything through the, through the security scanners. And so I was standing there waiting to get my ID scanned, my media credential scanned, by the young lady down there. And up from behind me came somebody said, Hey, look who it is. It's Chris Sello. And you're like, Oh, my God. No. And I turned around and that person who said that was our boss, Adam Clue. And then he really said, Oh, no. And I really said, Oh, no. No, it was Adam Clue. And I was like, Oh, Adam, hey. And he goes, yeah, he goes, Hey, this is my son, Ethan. And because I had never met Ethan before. Ethan was maybe what five, six, then look a whole lot older than that. He's very into sports. Just like, yeah, it might be seven or eight years old. So Ethan stand in there. And Adam Clue looks at Ethan and goes, Hey, this is this is Chris Sello. And Ethan goes, is he on the Gwen and Chris show? And how did you react? I loved it. Yeah. I thought it was great because it was great. So Adam, I talked before the show and I thought that was really funny. But I guess Ethan listens to like all the station all the time. And he listens like he puts up a Sami Love's pre and post game show on the YouTube. And so he's just a fan of everyone, but he had never met you. And I think it's hilarious that he has to have you on the Gwen and Chris show. That's me. I love it. Thank you, Ethan. Yes. All right. Let's get into a couple of things here. Padres going again for the victory tonight. It would be their 18th win in the last 21 games if they get it. And we were talking a little bit about this yesterday. Padres have gone 17 and three over the last 20. The only two Padres teams in history ever to have done that 1989 team, which finished with 89 wins. That was a very good Padres team in 1989. As a matter of fact, probably the best Padres team ever that didn't play in the postseason 1989. And what happened that year, they were way behind. And I don't remember how many games they got behind, but quite a ways behind the Giants in the division. And then the Padres went crazy in September that year. And they went 17 out of 20 games. And it looked like they were going to catch the Giants like the final week of the season. But they came up just short. And the Giants won the 1989 division. The Giants then beat the Cubs in the world in the playoff that year. And then the Giants that year in 1989 went on to host the earthquake World Series. Had the Padres caught the Giants in 1989, history might have been different. I mean, what are the odds of having the World Series with two teams in the Bay Area and the spot where the earthquake happened? Incredible. Incredible. The other team that the Padres had that won 17 out of 20 games was the 2005 team. That team finished with only 82 and 80, but won the division before being swept by the Cardinals three zip in the playoffs. So let's see what this year's team that has won 17 out of 20 does. I think they're going to win 90. They might win more scrap if they keep it going. Well, I mean, they're winning every if they win every game they're going to win. If they win every game, they're going to end up winning like 120. I mean, their schedule is so favorable for the end of the season. They're going to Colorado. They come back home. They have a pretty tough week against the twins and the Mets. Then they play a struggling Cardinals team and they play a struggling race team. Then they have the Tigers and the end of the season, Chris, is going to be incredible. The last week of the season is what you're, I think, referring to us the when the Padres finished the season with road trip and play at Arizona for three and at Dodgers for three. The final week of the season. But you're right. Before that, the Padres schedule is very favorable between here and there. They have some white socks in there. The white socks make an appearance. God forbid we should lose one game to them. 12 to 2 like the Yankees did. No, we'll be angry because you will be angry, but you and I will somehow get blamed for it and we'll have to hear all the complaining about it. That's fine. By the way, if the Padres win every game the rest of the season, they'll finish with 109 wins. Doesn't matter though. We learned earlier with Will Leich. That doesn't matter if you win a hundred games. Nobody's going for a hundred and nobody may win a hundred this year in Major League Baseball. It's been that kind of a strange year. All right, Padres send Michael King to the mound tonight against the Pirates. Luis Ortiz, right-hander, will pitch for Pittsburgh this evening. Pittsburgh has pretty much gone from right in the middle of the race to right on out of the race. Padres have not only improving their position, but pretty much ending it for the Pirates. And that's how quick things happen. When the Padres win to Pittsburgh, it was a week ago last Tuesday. They went to Pittsburgh Tuesday last Tuesday afternoon. Pirates were a couple of games out of the wild card. Now the Pirates have lost seven in a row. They're pretty much done. And the Padres, of course, have won all these games and they've improved their position dramatically. I mentioned this last night in the ball game, the two to one victory pro far came up big with the hit or the seventh inning. And he's, you know, I think his his magical run has dimmed just a tad, a tad in the last, you know, three weeks. He had the one great game. Was it in Baltimore where the two home runs, including the inning and they did the gritty pretty much won the ballgame. But since the all star break, pro far hasn't been as good, certainly very good average, like we said, down to 297, et cetera. But he has still had a flare for coming up with what they need when they need it. And last night that the offense was completely shut down. I mean, Jake Woodford, this guy had never pitched six innings in his life. And he had given up two hits and walked nobody and was cruising right through the Padres were one guy over the limit in terms of batters faced. I'm surprised that they took them out. He was only at like think like 74 pitches. Well, he like I said, he never pitched in the sixth inning before that alone, the seventh. So his first, you know, batter in the seventh inning, pro far rips a double into the corner. And that kind of set the tone and got it going. The reliever came in. Cronin were struck out, but then through a wild pitch. Yep. And that set pro far over to third. But I just love pro far. And how many times he has been in the middle of this thing, that a great shot of him coming off the field at the end of the top of the first inning yesterday after the Padres retired the side. And I mean, he just had the smile of a, you know, 14 year old pony league all star on his face. He's just having the time of his life. And he should. He should have the time of his life. It's, you know, it's been a season that's been 12 years in the making for him. And I still think if you voted today, pro far is the team MVP. I know that Merrill has gained a lot of ground. And right now the love for Merrill is off the charts as it should be. Yes. But I think pro far is still your team MVP. If the voting were today, there's a, there's still seven weeks to go though. I think Merrill has potentially moved into the top three and maybe even second. Because this surge has been that remarkably remarkable. It's been memorable. You don't win four games in a span of six days at the big league level. If you're Albert Pujols, you certainly don't do it if you're a rookie. And to hit three game tying home runs, follow that up by a game saving catch. In the span of six days, it has been insane. Now what Merrill has done here. And you know what else arises the leader in the National League at 305. Yeah, Ojuna is 301. Let me make sure of this. Because when I checked yesterday, there's only two guys in the National League that are hitting 300 that have enough qualifiers. That's a rise 303. Oh, Zuna 302. Oh wow. They're the only ones. Otani is next at 298. And then could tell Marte pro far 297. Here's what I'm getting at. Jackson Merrill is at 289. He's not that far off having a chance to win the batting title. No, and I know that might be a lot, but he's only got to make up 14 points. And he's in eighth spot right now. Yep. That's what it kind of a season he's having. You know, for the Paul schemes, people, I'm sorry. I just don't think he's done enough. Merrill zoomed past him. Now if we're going to talk, if we're going to get critical about this and really break it down, yeah, we were talking about why Jackson Merrill's not going to hit third over Jake Croninworth. Does does he lose points, you think, because he had a lower belly? Yeah, because he hits lower in the lineup and he's not as impactful that way. It's going to take somebody a lot of thought to look at it and go, you know what? Jackson Merrill got to perform under less pressure. Yeah. Because but it's not really the statistics that he's putting up are just so good. And he's not really performing under less pressure because the pressure is all on him. He's got to tie the gate or I mean, he's one of the guys in the bottom or the top of the ninth and we should tie the game. Yeah, we shouldn't be saying that he's performing under no pressure. He's just performing with a bunch of other guys who can take more of the spotlight away. Yes. But to say that he hasn't come up in pressure situations, are you kidding them? He's been as, you know, clutches. There is an entire national league. He really has. So even people like my friends are just like, man, Jackson Merrill, he's going to be good for years to come. And I'm not going to go that far because we're still in this season. You never can tell. But let's just get through the season. Exactly. Right now my pottery MVP ballot goes pro far Suarez, Merrill third, but it's due it's subject to change. Suarez has been there all year pro far has been there all year. Merrill has joined the conversation. Donovan Solano honorable mention for MVP. Yeah. Maybe he's got some big hits. MSP. Most surprising player. I did not expect anything from Donovan Solano. All right. And we've gotten quite a bit. Yes. No, I cannot put him up there with those other guys. I can't even put up there with Dylan Seast or Matt Waldron, honestly. But Solano, when called upon, he has clutched up for sure. All right, when we come back, some NFL notes, there is a young, up and coming superstar in the making quarterback, whose road to the top took a big detour today. We'll tell you about that. And some other NFL news and notes ahead of tonight's Padre pregame show after traffic on Gwen and Chris on this Tuesday. Tomorrow, the Padres and pirates will play a day game. Gets underway a little after one o'clock tomorrow Scrabie. That means you and I won't be until about four or four 30 tomorrow. Yeah, we'll have a short show. We call it the post post game. Correct show tomorrow after Padre baseball. So make your plans to join us tomorrow. We will also have a Scrabie Chronicles for you tomorrow night. And guess what? At six o'clock. I will be selecting the winners of Scrabie Nator game two tomorrow night. You're taking more people to the ballpark? Yeah. Next Wednesday. Success. Last time. Just wait first. I didn't promote this one as well as I should have. But we still got a ton of signups and I appreciate the big I think the big draw for the first one was that you told everybody I was going to make an appearance and then people flock actually to the it was I said Sammy Lev is going to make. Oh yeah, you say Sammy loves him parents. I don't that'll draw drum like flies. Yes. For sure. Speaking of Sam Lev, he's got the pregame show coming up in about 10 minutes. The bad news, NFL quarterback news today is Minnesota JJ McCarthy, the rookie who dazzled them in the preseason opener throwing two touchdown passes in a victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. McCarthy has come up injured. Apparently had some pain. Sornis reported it to the team yesterday. Medical officials have done all of the necessary MRIs and imaging work. And he's out for a while tear of the meniscus in his right knee. That's that's too bad. It really is. I mean the guy gets off to a really nice start his first preseason game plays 30 snaps. Everything goes according to plan for old friend Kevin O'Connell and McCarthy's reports to some soreness on Monday, right? It wasn't any big deal. Like I, I might not even reported it. You know what I mean? I'd be like that fine. You know, team me up coach. Yeah, but they check him out. He's got a torn meniscus. Doctors are going to decide here in the next few days during the surgery. They're going to, he's going to get surgery. They're going to decide during the surgery, whether he needs a trim of the meniscus. If that's the case, he gets to come back this season or they'll determine whether he needs a full repair. And if he needs that, see you later until 2025. That's brutal. Yeah, that sucks. I mean, he does. I watched that Vikings game a little bit. He looked good. He looked pretty good from what I saw. I mean, they're showing all the clips of his touchdown passes. No, but it wasn't anything about that. It was about knowing where you were in the pocket. It was about it. He was making throws that none of us ever saw at Michigan because he didn't need to make these crazy throws. They never asked him to do anything like that. Jim Harbaugh said he's going to be the best quarterback in the draft. You should take him number one. Everybody laughed. Everybody laughed at Jim Harbaugh. And we're not going to know because it doesn't look like we're going to see JJ McCarthy for some time. By the way, if you're wondering who the Vikings quarterback is going to be now. Hello, Sam Darnold. Goodbye Minnesota Vikings playoff hopes just just Sam Darnold. I'm going to give you a little tip. Just throw it to Justin Jefferson every single time. You wouldn't be a bad strategy. Just throw it up. I mean, this guy has made some catches that are really incredible. So incredible. If you can get it in the neighborhood, he might make a play for you. But I got to be honest with you. Football is great. I love it. I can't wait for it. The whole thing. The Sunday ticket. Our guys got Hanson on red zone really out of Scott Hanson. But too much of football is decided on injuries. You can't predict them. But the team that doesn't get the injuries, especially to the quarterback, those teams are going to win. Isn't it? And the teams that get the injuries, but mostly in football because that's where all the injuries are. If you get them in football, I mean, I'm not making an excuse for the dolphins. They sucked at the end. They lost to the Chiefs, but they did have their entire defense standing on the sidelines. You know, I mean, they had a really good season and a chance to do something taken away because they had just way too many injuries at the end of last season. And the teams that kind of avoid that. And I don't know exactly how you go about avoiding it. How do you say? Well, I don't want any injuries. The Bengals went to the Super Bowl. Now the last, what, two years they've had Joe Burrow problems. They haven't made it. It, you don't know. And if you look at the Vikings, I mean, I don't know if they could keep up with the Packers or the Lions, but they certainly can't with Sam Darnold, like they're done. I don't think they're done. They're done. I don't think they're done. I don't think they're done. I feel for my fans. No, they're done. I feel for my former high school football teammate. Yeah, coach, because, but even he knows. I don't know. Keep up with Sam Darnold. He he hand picks Sam Darnold to come in there. Good. If there's anyone I have faith in, you know, getting the quarterback to play better. It would be Kevin O'Connell. He's a former NFL quarterback. How many of those guys are head coaches right now? Bill Barnwell. I will say, but I'll stick with this. The Vikings are done. Bill Barnwell has rated the 14 playoff teams from a year ago. Okay. In terms of their chances to return to the playoffs this year. I saw something similar, but let's see. So let's run through this real quick. Chiefs number one, why they're still the Chiefs, right? 87% to return to the playoffs. 49ers, 86% to return to the playoffs pressures on your scrape. Does he have the calculations with Brandon IU for without Brandon IU? I don't know, but Brandon IU is probably on his way to the Steelers now. We don't know that it was just a report reports are they're gaining in steam and noise. They're not though. They aren't Baltimore Ravens third choice to make return to the playoff 78% okay best team in the regular season a year ago. They add Derek Henry. Wow, I like that for them. Well, I don't like having to defend it. I'll tell you that fear anybody. No, Detroit Lions. Lions are really the hot team this year. I think a lot of people really amount much to say in this thing make you mad. I think people expect them to get to the Super Bowl this year. I think that's a little bit of a it's a big jump, but darling. They were close that you can cheer for and feel good about. They were close 81% to return to the playoffs Packers fifth youngest team in the league, but Jordan love how many of us my hand is raised. How many of us said Jordan love could not get the job done at the NFL level? I did. I wasn't sure. Jordan love has been great so far and maybe just maybe the best way to be good at quarterback is to sit for a couple of years before you go in because that's what he did. Yeah, that's true. But then they had to pay him big time without really knowing what he's going to do. Right. He's been all right. Buffalo number six to return to the playoffs 70. I don't know about them. Well, Josh Allen, they just think he can do it no matter who he's throwing to. There's no wide receivers left. I think they need a new coach. We'll see. Houston Texans. This is another darling team. Yes. And this one's not going to work out. Seventh most reliable to make it to the back of the playoffs, 64%. They were three and 13 the year before. I think they're going to take a step back after taking the huge leap that they did last year. CJ Stroud was magical, but scheduled to be much tougher. Dallas 78% to return to the playoffs. The Cowboys, I mean, whatever. Eagles 79% they're the ninth choice. Seven got to the dolphins here. I know. I'm waiting for it. Wait. Here we go. 10th choice. Who is the name? Eagles 10th choice to return to the playoffs. Dolphin 60%. Here's a great seed. Here's a great line by Bill Barnwell, though. He says why they're number 10 because they stunk in December of 2023 and in January of 2024. He's 100% right. They were a great team until the end last year. It's not good. And then they got killed by Baltimore. They got beaten home by Buffalo and they got frozen out by Kansas City. Miami was having a great season until then. The Rams are 11th to return to the playoffs. Only 47%. They lost Aaron Donald. Lost Aaron Donald. Finally, that is going to be hard to replace. Tampa Bay 12th out of the 14 to return. 33% chance. Barnwell not to thrill the Baker Mayfield and company, but I don't know. We'll see. I like Baker's chip on his shoulder. All right. Cleveland Browns only 33% to return to the playoffs this year. We'll see what the Browns end up doing at the quarterback thing and whether Deshawn Watson. I can tell you can do something. It's all on his shoulders. Like they put all their eggs in the Deshawn Watson basket. Yeah. They're paying him, you know, 200 million dollars a game. Might as well, you know, see what he can do. And they'll most or the least likely playoff team from a year ago to return to it this year. The Pittsburgh Steelers. How could they say that Mike Tomlin does nothing but make the playoffs. Here's what he goes. Why their number 14? I foolishly choose not to believe in Mike Tomlin. I'm not. I did that last year. Bill Barnwell saying you did never bet against Mike Tomlin. How the Steelers were in the playoffs last year is incredible. It really is. They were so bad. They were really bad. They couldn't move the ball. They had a good defense. Their defense was not even good for them. George Pickens was making fun of his own quarterback. And now they're going to give it over to Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Mike Tomlin, man, the sky coach. By the way, Justin Fields got to start in their preseason game and Russell Wilson had to watch. So, okay. All right. There we go. Yesterday we had to make it to 534, and I came up two minutes short. Today we made it. Get the post. Yes. Sam Lovett. He's got all the great Padre free game stuff for you. It's coming up next from Petco Park, then Padres and Pirates. Not only tonight, but tomorrow afternoon. We'll be on after the game tomorrow hoping to wrap up a victory not only tonight, but tomorrow as well. For Tony Scrabby, Chris. Bye. Want a natural way to produce fine lines and wrinkles?
