This is Cricket, Paulina, and Tula, and Al. From Calgary, Alberta, CGSW 90.9 FM, Girls Rock Camp. Woo! I lie awake in bed for hours. I get your text, you say you want me home. Whoa! How do you justify the sweet things you say to me when all I wonder is? Why won't you save my number and your one? I got no time for complications. We stay up, talking to the moon. You got your list of expectations. So, why won't you save my number and your phone? Now you're going to spend my time. But you don't want to learn all I can try to feel it alone. Tell me you wish things with your friend. You don't want to make up your mind. Try to be there when you are hurt. Said you never leave me behind. I'm so done with this whole thinking. Thinking you could never be kind. Maybe you're killing me tonight. Now you're going to spend my time. If you don't want to learn all I can try to feel it alone. Alone, alone. I've been lost in the red direction. Black gold to get a connection. I'm a mess but a hot mess. Perfectly fucked up with imperfection. I'm a mess but a hot mess. Learn to love all my indiscretions. I've been goin' up, up, up on it. I don't want to be found. Goin' up, up, up on it. I don't want to be found. I don't want to be found. Goin' up, up, up on it. I don't want to be found. I've been livin' in beautiful chaos. Feelin' at home when I get lost. I'm a mess but a hot mess. Dreaming with my eyes open. I'm a mess but a hot mess. I'm not scared of being broken. I've been goin' up, up on it. I don't want to be found. Goin' up, up on it. I don't want to be found. I live for the night. I don't want to be found. Goin' up, up, up on it. I don't want to be found. Goin' up, up, up on it. I don't want to be found. Goin' up, up, up on it. I don't want to be found. I don't want to be found. Goin' up, up on it. I don't want to be found. Goin' up, up on it. I don't want to be found. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] That was Hot Mess by Lizette Xavier. Before that, we heard, why won't you save my number? You are tuned in to CJSW 90.9 FM. This is Local Singles. My name is Sammy Parker. I go by they/them pronouns and I'm here to lead you through the next hour of all local music. Before we get started, I do want to say that CJSW both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7. The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta Districts 5 and 6. This week, we have a very special episode as we are going to be having some very special guests joining us in the booth today. We've got Bam Camp Calgary. Bam Camp Calgary is a program that builds empowerment and self-esteem through creative self-expression. They create space for girls and gender expansive youth within Calgary's music. Campers are spending this week learning about songwriting, working together as band, live performances and more. Today, they're going to be joining us on air to talk about their experiences in music. So make sure you keep that dialogue CJSW 90.9 FM. We're also going to talk a little bit about some events that are happening this week. Like I say every single show, I am not able to cover every event that happens in a week. So please do go and follow your favourite venues and artists on social media. We are going to play a short song set for you, short set. And right after we get back, we're going to be hearing from Bam Camp campers about their experiences at camp this week. So without further ado, we are going to play a song that is actually created by one of the mentors at Bam Camp. This entire set or episode is filled with the music of the mentors at Bam Camp. Because a lot of them are in the building right now. And I like to play their music when they come in. It's just a lot of fun. Alright, we're going to kick things off here with a track called Fight Me by Cardiograms on CJSW 90.9 FM. [music] Can't stop stopping. Is it really worth it? Armed against myself. I feel the conflict. Can't stop stopping. Is it really worth it? Armed against myself. I feel the conflict. And if you're trying to fight me, I do it better. I'm raised a wall with them, then I'm dying the way. [music] Made your empathy. General men, let's join forces silently. The battle begins. And if you're trying to fight me, I do it better. I'm raised a wall with them, then I'm dying the way. [music] Can't quit and I am made of shame. The struggle ranges on. I am made of pain. And if you're trying to fight me, I do it better. I'm raised a wall with them, then I'm dying the way. [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] That was Fight Me, a track from the album Sweet Despair by Cardiograms on CGSW 90.9 FM. And now we have some very special guests in the studio that we're going to be talking to today. Let me just turn on their microphones and say hello. How are you guys? Hello. Hi. So, Bam Camp. It's the week of Bam Camp. How have you guys been having a good time? Yeah, for sure. Awesome. Have many of you been here before? I've been in the lobby of CGSW, but I've never been in any of the rooms. And this is my first year at Bam Camp. My first year. Awesome. That's awesome. First year is always very exciting, nerve-wracking, but I'm sure you've been learning a lot this week. So, the first question I have for you is what is the name of your band and why did you choose to name your band that? We're called Royal Heath, and we called it that because we're all pretty big fans of Shugays and '90s alternative. And there's the album Loveless by My Bloody Valentine, and we were like, "Oh, we really like that color." So, we found the hex code for the main color on it, and it was called Royal Heath, so we kind of just went with it. Oh, that is awesome. Excellent. So, the next question I have for you is, what inspires you musically? What keeps you going in music? Honestly, for me, it's just listening to music. I just listen to music. If I find something I like, I'll learn to play it, and it just, like, will inspire me. Awesome. Yeah, that's great. I would say going to live shows at just like, I really like smaller live shows especially, and that really inspires me to do music. And yeah, just listening to music, I agree with that. Absolutely. So, what genres are you all most interested in, and why? I really like a lot of post-rock and noise, and I really think that that's quite cool because it's a lot different from what I was kind of raised with. My dad's a really big fan of punk rock and stuff like that. So, I just thought it was cool to kind of be in a thing that's like, how far can we take this before it goes too far, and isn't considered music as kind of why I really like it. That's awesome. Yeah. Personally, I really love like a lot of indie rock, like just a lot of like chill indie, like, low key rock stuff is really what I'm into. I have been for a while, so. Absolutely. And then one last question for everyone here today. If you were to give somebody a piece of advice about music, what would it be? Oh, just play. If you find an instrument there, like, oh, that's really cool. I want to try that. Just try it. Like, just fool around on it. If you find a song that you really want to learn, like build up to it and develop your skills, just don't stop practicing and keep going. Yes, I love that. I love that. I would say, like, yeah, just go to like small local shows and just kind of like, after everyone say, you can be like, nice set. And then, yeah, just kind of talk to people because, yeah, it's going to like not only inspire you to make more music, but also, a lot of the time, that's kind of how I got my start in my solo music is to just like, yeah, talk to people. And then eventually, they'll be like, oh, by the way, I'm booking a show on like next month. Do you want to be on the bill? And then, yeah, that's my advice. Excellent. Any more advice from the crowd here? No. That is a-okay. Well, thank you so much, Royal Heath, right? Royal Heath. That's such a cool name. Thank you so much for coming on to talk a little bit about Bandcamp, your musical experiences. And we are going to play you guys out with a song called "It's Only Ever Us" by Dib Dooley. So thanks again, and we'll play you out with a Dib Dooley song. [Music] You just heard from Dib Dooley's, "It's Only Ever Us" off their album, Lythargi or Lethargi. People like to say words differently, I guess. We are going to move on to our very special guests, Round 2. We have another band from Bam Camp joining us on air. Hello, how is everyone? Today I should probably turn on your mics. It's good, thank you. Awesome, so what is your band's name? Our band is called Suafi, and why did you name your band that? Well, there's three of us and we're girls, and that is three girls in French. Excellent, what do you each play? I sing and do guitar. I do backup vocals and play bass. I play the drums. Oh, that's awesome, awesome, okay, so I have a few questions for you. Where do you guys want to see yourselves go in music? It doesn't necessarily have to be in the near future. It could be in the far future. What's the dream? Oh, can you come back to me? Yeah, absolutely. I mean, for me, I just want to have a band that's successful in some way. I don't mean fame-wise, but is able to make music and play shows and things like that. I really hope that music stays with me for the rest of my life because I really love playing bass and stuff. I hope that I'll have a band that can be productive and actually make music and release things and stuff like that. Awesome, I just want a band that I like bands that get along with each other and aren't fighting constantly. I do want to do music when I'm older. It's something that I like to do throughout life, but I just want a band that's successful and gets along with each other. Yeah, that's so important is to have a band that, like, vibes with each other. Absolutely. Yeah, I would want to continue on the more classical path of music that I'm doing and do more composition competitions. Stuff like that. I find it really fun. Oh, that's very cool. It's a classical. Yeah, there's a whole lot of different routes you can take with music, whether that's classical, jazz, or, like, rock bands, so you can do anything, and that's awesome. I love everything. What kind of genres are you most interested in personally and why? Okay, for me, I'm really into, like, heavier metal. I love death metal to listen to, especially. I've never been in a death metal band, but that's, like, something I'd love to do. I also love indie music. That pops off. I really like that. Yeah. Two very different genres. I love that. Oh, my gosh. What do I not like? I don't know. I love, like, punk. I love K-pop. Yeah, I like rap and classical, you know. A little bit of it. Awesome. I'm a really big punk person. I also listen to a lot of slam metal, but right now I'm listening to, like, more mainstream music. But usually during this, like, school year and, like, summer sometimes, I listen to a lot of slam metal and punk. Oh, that's awesome. Yeah, no shame in mainstream music either. That stuff is getting so catchy lately. All right, so I have one last question for you, and feel free to, you know, think on it if you need to. But if you were to give somebody a piece of advice about music, what would it be? I think that one thing that I think was really important with me, especially getting into me, is just do it. Like, don't just, like, sit around and be like, "Oh, I need to learn how to do vocal warm-ups," or, "Oh, I'm not very good yet." Just the best way to do it is find people that are in your, that you know or that you don't know and just start playing. Like, that's the way to get better. That's the way to, like, learn how to play with people and stuff like that, is just to start doing it. To do everything that you can, to just get into the scene. Go to shows, things like that, just like, you know, that can, like, really just help you get really into it all. Yes, excellent. Oh, okay, okay. Um, I'd say definitely do your theory, do your theory homework. I know you don't want to, but do it, do it. Do your skills, do your theory book. I love that. I do that. Pass your exams. I would say, um, just be nice to everybody in the scene. And, um, like Ayla said, just do it. Like, just, just get into it right away because there's no use in just waiting for, to do other stuff to learn something. Just get into it. Exactly. Yeah, those are all wonderful answers. Thank you so much. Uh, Twafy. Awesome. Twafy. And, yeah, very excited to have you guys here. And thank you for answering all those questions. So beautifully, we are going to play you out with a track by Harsh called Birdchurch. Thanks again for joining us and keep on listening to CJSW 90.9 FM. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] You just heard from Birdchurch. That is by Harsh and that's off of their album Garbage Sale or Garbage Sale. Depends on how you want to read that. We have some very special guests in the studio. We have our third band from BAMCAM. Hello friends. How are you guys doing? Good. Hello. Oh, that's awesome. So first question, what's the name of your band and why did you name your band that? Silly boy in the red. Excellent. Any reason behind the name or just for fun? No, we kind of just came with the first thing to mind. We were all like speaking to each other, trying to come up with something. And then all of a sudden I just belted out. Silly boy in the red. And they were all like, sure. No, that's awesome. Sometimes it's the first name that comes that really sticks. So you don't have to be serious. Alright, so a few questions for you today. Who are some of your musical inspirations and why? Yeah, us individually for sure. Or while you guys individually. I would say a lot of my inspiration does come from like Radiohead or even people like Amy Winehouse. It's just like a wide variety of people, I guess. There's no specific thing. Yeah, for sure. I actually started playing the instrument that I played because of Adventure Time. Marceline? Yeah. And I'm a huge nerd. So that's basically the reason why. Oh, there's tons of nerds in music. Trust me. I've been listening to lots of sad gloomy do-me. Oh, I'm so hard done by music. I really like Midwest emo right now. Alex G. TV girl. I used to listen to heavier stuff, but I've been chilling lately. Yeah, absolutely. I am really inspired by scores for movies and stuff like soundtracks, but also like I think of the soundtrack to Donnie Darko. And that's basically what I listen to. That's a great soundtrack. Awesome. So, what inspires you all kind of musically? Like what keeps you going in music? Why do you do what you do? It's kind of tough for question. For me personally, I guess it just comes from a place of wanting to have something that makes you an individual. So when I was younger, I would be like, I'm just a regular kid. I have nothing that I like doing, and then obviously Justin Bieber came around. This guy and me have so much in common. I'm going to start singing his songs. And yeah, one YouTube video later. Here I am. Alright. I like creating things. I'm a visual artist more than I am music person, but yeah, I just like creating sounds or pictures or whatever. Yeah. Absolutely. I keep doing music because I can't picture myself doing anything else. I don't want to work a corporate job. I don't want to have to clock in every single day. I started going to shows, and the first one I went to my first thought was like, I have to do this. I can't not do this. I love that. I just like being able to be like, hey, music and art is so cool. And if you want to do it, you should. Because for me, like a field show or a concert or playing in a band like this, it just always means so much to me. And it makes me happy that maybe a kid is going to see that and feel the same way I did when I first experienced music and be like, that is rad and I want to dedicate a big part of my life to being able to create that and make people happy. I absolutely love that. Those are great answers. The last question I have for you is, if you were to give a piece of advice about music, what would it be? Um, probably like stick to what you like with your gut feeling of what you want to do. Like don't overwhelm yourself with like all of the knowledge because everything just comes through. Everything just comes down to like basics. And you just have to enjoy yourself, I guess. Exactly. Uh, just keep going and don't stop. Like if you do stop, it does put like, it's hard to come back. So just like, you know. Push through. Absolutely. Well, I think, uh, obviously practice a lot. And people say that and you hear it and you're like, oh, well, everyone says that. But people say it because it's so true. Like, if you don't practice, you're not going to get anywhere. Exactly. Yes. I would say like, don't like change, like try not to change your mind about things. Like if you hear the viola and you're like, I'm going to dedicate the rest of my life to the alto clef and this instrument. But then someone tells you you should play something else. Don't do it. Like it's your decision. It's your musical journey. Like if play any instrument you want it, don't let people change your mind about that. Yeah. Stay true to yourself. Awesome. See, you all gave great advice. That was excellent. Well, thank you very much for coming on the show today. I really enjoyed having you here. Good luck on your showcase on Saturday. I will be mentioning that on air in a few moments. But for now, we're going to play you out with one of your mentor songs. Ostella or zero Stella, I'm going to have double check how that said.
