(music) Good morning, and welcome in to the Captain Jay good morning show on ESPN 1000. And streaming on the ESPN Chicago app, with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. I'll remind you it's a Waddle Wednesday, we'll hear from Tommy tell me about 835. Shout out no shot, here's Shay Norlin. Good morning boys on a Wednesday, how are we feeling? Awesome. Porsche had to wait almost to a west coast speed to watch his hard knocks yesterday. The nine o'clock hour. He's a young. He's not a poi. He's not a poi. He's a poi. He's a young. He's a young. Those of us that have cable, we got it right all we wanted. I was coaching so I taped it, came home, and watched it with my wife. Just wait till somebody at NBC forgets to hit the button on the live stream of an NFL game. Boy, and you'll really see me hit the roof. And they'll be like, "So, give cable, kid." You can't, they're exclusive to Peacock. Oh well. Don't you have any sympathy for Shay Norlin? None. None? Absolutely not. Peacock tweets in like a foreign language, can't even understand 97% of his tweets. Damn. It's not my fault you're uncultured. Jesus. I'm happy. I read your tweet to my wife. She's like, "What does that even mean?" Ooh, Paul would have been wherever he'd do. Yeah. Okay. So. That tweet. So should the tweets just be for everyone, all the tweets should be like in your lane, right? Not, I'm not saying in my lane, but they, some of them at least, some should actually be, yeah, should be in English. I see. Understood. We're like, most people could understand them. Okay. Do you usually read Shay's tweets to your wife? No, but last night's was so stupid that I had to. Okay. Damn. Here's Shay Norlin. Pat Eberfluze talked about the value of Montez Sweat on the Bears defensive line. Let's a little bit about what Montez Sweat brought to your team when you acquired him from the commanders. Yeah. I mean, he demands attention, right? You know, so that helps free up the other rushers and that's so important to be able to do that to have a guy like that. When you can have two, it's even better, you know, and that's what we're, we know, we're searching to do here, here, coming forward, but it's, it's important that you don't have to cover as long on the pressures there and what, what's great about Taz is that he's a great run player too. Yeah. So he understands that stopping the run gets you favorable down at distances so we can rush the passer and, you know, he's always done that well. Mm hmm. Yeah. If you missed it in there, Eberfluze to the Bears are searching for someone to be the Russia opposite Montez Sweat, shot or no shot, Eberfluze slipped up and admitted the Bears are going to trade for a pass rusher. That's a shot. Absolute shot. It's a shot in which I hope that is the case, but he also could couch it by saying we're searching for that person on the roster. But the hope is, is that what you said is that you said that's what we're searching it. That's what Eberfluze said. We're searching to do that. Hopefully that will be the case. Right. And he might not even have slipped up. We're searching. Is that Matthew Judon? Is that Trey Hendrickson? Is that Hassan Redick or is that Austin Booker, Demarcus, what they're searching. See that, Shay, there's nuggets everywhere. I'm going through the dial the other day going through the channels. Oh, of all people, CBS sports nets in town. Hmm. Channel 232. Let's take a look at. Oh, they're in Hallows Hall. Oh, they're sitting down with Eberfluze. He said, what? You didn't get that anywhere. We're searching to do this, we're searching to try to find someone else on the other side of my test. Went. Right. How about that? Right. So you take that Keith Williams, CBS sports still matters. Oh, wow. Keith is a Keith from upstairs in the seventh floor. The Grand Poobah. The Grand Poobah is going after Shay and our golfot and because he's studying for the show he's filling in for going through some notes, he's going through CBS sports net, right? Because that's what we do. We search everything. Nobody looks at CBS sports. No, but we do. Who even goes to that website? I think was the question. Yes. Shane Orley. So there's a nugget there from courtesy of CBS sports net. Very good. Very good. Pretty good. And by the way, once again, cap that Keith. You know what that means, cap? Once again, the bears are on the same wavelength as many of us. There's a hole on the roster. You're going to try to try to fill it. It's not our imagination. They can look at what we see and say, hmm, we can upgrade here. No question. Nothing wrong with that. And let's see. They've got cap room. Let's see. What is the price? What do I have to give up to get Matthew Jew down? Yeah. Shane Orley. All right. Something interesting and hard knocks last night, at least to me. The bears had a police lineup of NFL officials mug shots basically up on the projector. They were sitting down with Caleb Williams going through each of them, name by name, who he's going to see when he will see them, how often he will see them, kind of their mannerisms, what they like, what they don't like basically giving Caleb the advice to get cozy with these guys as early as possible. You're going to have a long career. You're going to see them a lot. It's good to get in with them. They're going to be around too. Last year, if you remember, the bears were not shy about their issues with officials never throwing flags on Justin Fields when he would get hit late. So my question, shot or no shot, the bears teaching this to Caleb is a result of the way fields was treated by officials. No shot. This just being smart is a no shot and because Caleb's new to the league, he has to learn these officials names. Yeah, like a Craig roll stat, isn't that who they had on the screen? Yeah. Okay. Here's what he likes. Here's what he doesn't like. That she asked that question because peacock was asking me, she goes, I don't understand. I had to pause it. I go, well, okay. And I explained it to her this way. You tell me if I explain to her correctly, I said on, I said when it comes to these officials, it's good for young players to be able to learn their names. When he comes out in the field for the first time, he has Craig. It's Caleb saying Craig, I'm Caleb Williams from the Chicago Bears. Good to meet you. And Craig, the referee will say welcome to the NFL. So now you've established rapport with that official. And then of course, if you're noticing that hard knocks, they went through, he coaches a Catholic league team, whatever they were saying, you bring that up in conversation too, if you're Caleb. Hey, how's your team doing? Heard that you're a coach at Catholic league. Oh, pretty good. Thanks for asking. Now there's a rapport. Does that mean you'll get calls? Who knows? But at least you come across as, hey, you're a good guy. I know something about you. Correct. Your hot button things, like the word, there are certain things that drive me nuts. I hate the term shut up. My kids don't use it. My wife doesn't use it, hate it. It literally makes my blood boil. I can't stand it. There was a referee from Chicago, George Demos, George Demos working in the Mac, and he didn't get across half court one play. He's like standing like by half. I'm like, hey, Demos, get in the game, man. Bam, stops the game and airs me out. I'll take it from him, coach McDougall, not from this little blankety blank. Next word, he's teed. I get reprimanded. You got to know who you're dealing with. Getting the game is his hot button. Someone that says it to him drives him insane. You got to know Craig Rose that may not like that or Ed Hocky Lee Jr., and that his name might not like that. You got to know who you're dealing with. You were right, how you told Peacock. Get the rapport. Just know their name. This little background. Hey, Craig. How you doing? Kids good? Macy? Not junior. How they doing? Good? Sure. Well, you know my kid's name. That's really cool. Yep. The homework's there. That's a good thing. Yeah. Shane Orlett. All right. White Sox lost to the Yankees 4-1 on the south side last night, and it was a pending free agent who was responsible for pretty much all of the Yankees offense, Juan Soto. With three home runs in the Yankee victory, he has long been a pipe dream for Cubs fans. With this free agency coming up, a lot of Cubs fans would love to see Juan Soto wear that jersey. Play at Wrigley Field. Some of the Cubs fans may have been at the rate last night, so on first hand hit three homers. Shot or no shot, Juan Soto will be a $500 million player. That's a shot. So Shohei got $700 million, but he's also a pitcher. He also brought the international flair to it, which brought incredible sponsorship opportunities. Yeah, he's going to get anywhere between $450 and $500 million shot. And it's deserved. He's a monster. He's a star. And if I'm Tom Ricketts, I call Jed and go, "Okay. Here we go. We got $80 million coming off the books. How much is it going to cost us per year?" X. Done. There you go. Give him a portion of the team, too. No. Cut him off a piece. You can't do that. Just offset the cost. Yeah. Can I just give you 1% of the club? Shane, in my career, I had 10 phone calls that kept coming in for hours and hours and hours. Gotta give Walter Peyton a part of the team. Gotta cut him in. Huh? Did not happen. Owners can do whatever they want with their money. What I would tell you is, is that that is a shot, $500 million is amazing. Amazing. But again, think about the player that he is. No doubt about it. Now, I guess, Shane, the question is, who pays the money? Dodgers have their guy, but then who's next? It's the Yankees, right? Like they're just going to spend the money and keep him. I don't know. I don't know that. Hal Steinbrenner said the payroll they're at now is unsustainable. And maybe he doesn't like it in New York. I don't know. Greg Maddox said he would never, ever play for the Yankees and he never did. They offered more money. He's like, no, no interest. New York. I'm out. It's a real question though, because the Dodgers have theirs, the Yankees are, it's not George Steinbrenner. That's Hal. I mean, $500 million, I mean, for you and I know what the Yankees have been over the years. That seems like something they should pay for. But like who's next? And they've already paid judge 360. I mean, I don't know. Rangers have already put, you know, put their chips in the middle of the table to win their championship. They bought themselves a World Series championship. I don't know. The Mets peeled back. They're not going forward with that kind of money. I think the yanks, the Yankees will pay him and just figure out a way to stop paying Stanton, right? I don't know how they're going to stop paying Stanton. I don't either. No one's taken that deal. They can't. It's one thing to say, our payroll is unsustainable. I don't think you can afford it just purely in baseball terms to not keep Juan Soto. I can give you 10 teams that won't pay Juan Soto. I took out all the centrals, national and American, so you don't need the Cubs would it all? No, we've been through that road before you and I with with Otani. We've been through that. We've been through that before, like it would have been a nice idea, but the Cubs did not have the stomach for it. So not 700 million. So 500 million? No shot. So his Stanton this year is making 32 million. He gets 32 million next year, 29 million the year after, 25 million the year after and a $10 million buyout of the last year, club option of 20, 22 million the last year. So I mean, you're talking about a significant amount of money and no one's taken that money. Give him a banea deal. He's not taking that. That case play for Oakland. Right. Can you squeeze in one more? Yes. Some news last week made a notice of allegations and punishments levied for recruiting violations. Michigan was going to have Jim Harbaugh on the field as an honorary captain for their season opener. Harbaugh yesterday said he opted out of doing this. He said he wants to keep his focus with the Chargers, not take anything away from Michigan and the team they have right now. He's just going to stay in LA. Sherone Moore said he wants to be in the fox hole, real fox hole football guy. I would like to call BS. I do not believe that Harbaugh opted out. It's very uncharacteristic for him to not be in that position. I think somebody at Michigan got on the phone and said, dude, stay the F away right now. We do not need you here shot or no shot. Harbaugh was told by Michigan not to come. I'm going to say no shock because I think he's a smart guy. And I think he said I do not need to be back in that hornet's nest right now with all that's going on. The media. I don't need it. He caused. Correct. So, I don't think they told him to stay away. I think it may be mutual, but it was not like stay the F away. No. It was not. I no shot. I would say for someone who comes across so honest as he told the press in Los Angeles that, you know, never lot, not never lie, never cheat for Jim Harbaugh. I mean, you just won the national championship, man. You are Michigan. You can't show up. What's wrong? Yeah, you never lie, never cheat. So stand on your lones, right? That's how America is in 2024 cap. If you're guilty, you'll still stand out there. What are you going to do? You can't hurt me. I'm going to speak to the press. I want to speak to the fan. Those are my people. That's what's happening today in our in our discourse that we see. So what is he running from? I'm going to stay over here with the charger. Yeah, because you run you ran away from trouble that you caused. Yeah, he just like, I don't need that. I'm out. That's exactly what happened. I agree. Does Pete Carroll come back to USC? Does he make a return back to the US for a warm welcome after that nonsense at USC? Not the year after, right? Like you just ran away with your tail between your legs. You don't come back for the season opener the year after. That's right. That's right. Give it some time. Take a breather. The harpons literally banned from college athletics for four years. You can't put them on the field. Never lie. I never cheat. The NFL is coming up. But don't forget, Waddle Wednesday at 8.35. Cap and Jhood on ESPN 1000 and also on our YouTube channel. Well, that is if you missed something, get the podcast on the ESPN Chicago app. Cap and Jhood are back on Chicago's home for sports, ESPN Chicago. It both sucks. He sucks. I'm just a fan. I'm not a football evaluator. I love the Green Bay Packers. I love the guy who's front, but there we go. This is not Detroit, man. This is the Super Bowl. I love winning. He starts to come at a moment. This is a really thickly built guy. I mean, what's the answer you're looking for on these things here? It's downtown. We go around the NFL right here on the Cap and Jhood Morning Show on ESPN 1000. We're hoping that you're going to have a great Wednesday. It's a Waddle Wednesday here on Cap and Jhood as we keep your company until 10 o'clock. It's in my Greenberg at 10, followed by Black and Yurko 12 to 3. Love it. Waddle and silly 236 theory into the White Sox and Yankees right here on the home of the White Sox, the ESPN 1000. The Waddle Wednesday, one of my favorite things we do. Love talking with that, dude. Around the NFL, here's Shane Orlin. Hoodie, couple of weeks ago, I think Carmen was in for cap. They gave you win totals, volume one, my first mixtape. I have volume two prepared for today. To catch you up, if you missed volume one, I had the Titans over six and a half, commanders under six and a half, Ravens under 11, Bills over 10 and a half, Lions under 10 and a half and Chargers under eight and a half. I've added five more that I feel good about as we've gotten more news out of camp. All right. You ready, Cap? Ring it on. Only if I'm crazy. Okay. I already know that. Oh, okay. Good morning to you as well. I start with the Eagles under 10 and a half wins plus 125. What do you think? Under 10 and a half wins plus 125. You're getting plus money. I don't like anything that's been coming out of their camp. The flip at center really concerns me, you lose Jason Kelsey. The tush push really hinged on Jason Kelsey's ability to snap the football. He does it differently than anyone else and be the low man and consistently win in that scheme. I don't think it's like some non-factor that he's gone. I don't like hearing that there's a quote unquote rift between Jalen Hertz and Nick Siriani and that Hertz was kind of freelancing in the offense last year. I don't like a second consecutive season with two new coordinators. I just find it hard to believe they're going to rip off 11 wins. Yeah, I'm going to actually cosign shade there. I like it. 10. I think nine or 10. You get them. They get an injury. They got issues. Oh, dude. The Cowboys win that division, Shay. What are the Eagles win that division with 10 wins? I hate picking that division, hoodie. It's okay. I'll wait. Probably the Eagle. I want to say the Eagles just with 10 wins on the back of the fact that no team has won that division in consecutive season since 2004. And the Cowboys won last year. I wonder if there's a world where the Giants surprise people. What? Daniel Jones, Jay Adams. I'm not betting the Giants to win that division. I also wouldn't bet the commanders. I gave you commanders under six and a half. I look at the Eagles. I don't like what I'm seeing. I look at the Cowboys. I don't like what I'm seeing. Who were you supposed to pick in the East? In the ball with the weight loss. Okay. They won hard knocks in the summer. Okay. Pretty good. Pretty good. They said Daniel Jones, the quarterback, they're not very good. The underback after this. I mean, I mean, to me, it comes out of the Eagles of the Cowboys. Even though it won't be slippage with both, but I think it comes down to those two teams. Giants? No. No. All the complaints we have about the Bears over the years. The Giants? Thank God for Eli Manning, because they would be in the same spot. They would. They would have risen the tissues and terrible ownership. That could could it be the NFC least again and we get a nine and eight division champion? I mean, who could be? Who knows? We just know. I think we're on the same page with Washington. Not there. Still building. All right. So that's one. Give us the next one. Steelers under eight and a half. I don't believe in anything. They have a quarterback. I don't believe in Russell Wilson as a starter. I know that it sounds like the Brandon Ayuk thing really might happen. I don't buy Russell Wilson as a starter. Justin Fields looked like more of the same as the back of the quarterback. Choosing Tomlin to go under the eight and a half mark is ballsy to say the least, but this just feels like the year where they don't get there. It all sucks. I actually am going to cosign Shea again. Of course you will. I agree with them because they don't have what they need at quarterback. Two African-American quarterbacks. Is that what you're saying? Yes. Oh, God! It's all over everybody. That's what sportsman like next. They don't have enough. I'm listening to this. Did you hear what he's saying? I'm going to go with Shea. I'm going to play the under. The other thing with them, too, last year, I think they were nine and three in one-score games that never holds up ever. I told you that last year with Minnesota. Minnesota was a one-score game miracle machine for a couple seasons. You can't do it forever. I don't think Pittsburgh can have that favorable of a time in those types of situations this season. I don't think they win nine games. Okay. I will never underestimate Mike Tomlin. He's proven it every single year. This time last year? Coach Tomlin. At this time last year, same thing. Don't think they can get it done. They had a scraping claw to get there, but they got the job done. You guys just don't get it when it comes to Mike Tomlin. You guys just don't get it. He's trying to underestimate the brother, but he will find a way. He may not come down to Wilson in the field. He'll find somebody. He wants those nine wins. He wants to be over 500. He does. He'll find somebody. Tomi Maddox, he'll find somebody. Tomi Maddox, what's the next one? Next one's going to be the San Francisco 49ers. Under again, 11 and a half. It's a crazy number. You're asking me to fade a team that's lined to win 12 games. And just with the stuff that they have going on, the likelihood now that it feels like they're going to trade Brandon Ayuk, Christian McCaffrey already dealing with an injury. He will miss camp. I'm sorry. I don't think that this is a team that's capable of just ripping off 12 wins again. It feels like this is the year where they come back down to Earth. Not telling you they're going to be bad. They can be 11 and 6 and I win my bet. Do the 49ers win the division, Shay? Really? There's a threat there. I'll tell you who it is in a moment, but I think, yeah, the answer is yes. It's just 11 and 6 is enough to win you the division. It's also enough for me to go under on 11 and a half. I'm actually going to co-sign Shay for the third consecutive pick. Yes, I agree with you because they have to win 12 ball games. That's exceptionally hard. You got to stay healthy. I think they have a good quarterback. I don't think they have like, oh my God, Patrick, my home's there. So yeah, I'm with you, Shay. You better go the other way, Shay. The cooler has come in. Yeah, I'm getting a little scared. Camp liking him this much. Mr. Mosch over here. I'm in trouble. All right. What's the next one? Seahawks over seven and a half minus 165. I love Mike McDonald. I think he can elevate that defense offensively concerns definitely without Shane Waldron, but they still have quality wide receivers, Jackson Smith and Jigba, DK Metcalf. They kept him there. I think that's important. There were questions about whether or not he was happy in Seattle. He's still there right now. So I kind of like Seattle as a potential threat in that division, actually. Yeah, I'll take a pass on that one. I love the lead singer, the doobie brothers, Mike McDonald. You know, when I was, you know, I was thinking about Tommy, I was thinking about Yamo be there. I was thinking about that. I was thinking about that being the theme when the Seahawks come out. Little James Ingram, a little Michael McDonald or what do fools believe, man? Yeah, what do fools believe? And then they just start fighting because that's how they play under Michael McDonald out there, apparently in Seattle. They just fight. Yeah. I will not co-sign Shay on that one. I think they went like seven games. Shay, are you hating on the 49ers again? Did I hear you say that? No, I said they'd go 11 and six and win the division. I still win the bet. Good. That's true. He just said they're over. Under's 11 and a half. He's going under. Yeah, it's like I'm fading them winning 12 games. They might trade Brandon Ioop. Trent Williams hasn't practiced. Christopher McCaffrey's hurt. You got to get blinded by all those rings that Shanny's won. Stop the cap. You know, I've given him crowd. He's a hell of a coach, but at some point, climb the freaking mountain or quiet now. He doesn't say anything. Oh, my God. Heavenly father. We're doing this for them. And it was the last time you heard Kyle Shanahan say anything where you said, wow, that's really arrogant. At what point? He just comes off with that. That's Kyle saying. He's supposed not to like him. Like you lap up anything that Matt Eberfluis would burp up, but Kyle Shanahan says something and it's all about evil. You're better than that. No, I'm not. Stop saying that because I'm not. Like that's just categorically false. I'm not better than that. I'm not. I'm not the world biggest Eberfluis fan. I just tell you what I hear from players, but Johnny, at some point, climb the freaking mountain. Don't you think you're not going to be in the same way as I've been rude. Don't you think that the players? I don't know. I don't talk to 49ers players. Well, then don't close your mind to it. Not being the same case out there. I'm not saying that. I said, at some point, though, you got to win. Somebody's getting on my roof right now. What? Yeah. Literally. Is it Santa? No, I think that has some roof work being done, but I didn't realize it was starting now. Oh, man. That can't be good for the hangover. I don't have a hangover. You're Tom Waddle. You do. Oh, no, Tom Waddle. I don't get them. No, that's a joke. Well done. Well, there's something-- I did have-- I don't know how you have the sixth sense, Jonathan, because I did have a scotch and a half last night. There's nothing wrong with that. No, no. No. That's something wrong. How do you think I get to the mornings? I got a scotch and a half for Waddle. Is that a eight-finger pour? Pretty close. Probably six. Braggart. All right. Let's move on now to the next-- let's go to the last one. What else do you have? I have a final team out. You can tell me if I'm a scumbag for popping this one in yesterday. Yes. The McCarthy news came across Vikings under six and a half plus 135. No, that's fair. If they're going 17 games to Sam Darnold, they are not winning seven games. That's fair. Someone's going to be in the basement of the north. Why not the Vikings? They're going to be there. Mm-hmm. Nothing wrong with that. Not going to be the bear. Got the bear at the top. Mm-hmm. I know how crazy is that, right? I love it. I love it. Listen, you play a couple episodes of hard knocks with the bears involved in the sick of fans. It's catnip for them. I mean, I love it. I think it's great. Let's go. Let's go. Listen, it wasn't like a big tease or anything. He just kind of rolls it out at 7.28. They're going to win the division. Take that. What? Just rolls it out. No. I mean, no, like, you know, pyro and bally who know coming up next, caps got a big prediction. None of that. They're not going to win the division. Take that. What? He doesn't even tell us pre-show. Oh. Like we could build a topic out of the opinion. Instead, we've got Kaplan at the end of a segment burping out that the bears are going to win the division. Not even YouTube-worthy. Waddle. I mean, it's just, it's just, they just rolls it out off the top of the... You know, I was thinking I went to division. Take that. Goodnight, Mindy. Can't help myself. What? What? What the F? We're doing radio here. Guess not. All right, Michael McDonald will join us coming up next as we have a Waddle Wednesday. Yes. What do fools believe on WMVP Chicago? Welcome back to Captain Jay Hood. You're officially locked in on Chicago's home for sports ESPN Chicago. Tom Waddle. Tom Waddle. Former wide receiver for the Chicago Bears. Guys, amazing. 1989 all Madden team and afternoon co-host on ESPN Chicago. I think he's going to start at least eight games in the national football league next year for a team that's going to give him a chance. It's Waddle Wednesday with Tom Waddle. Listen, I got a pedicure in an hour, but I get back here, the wheels better be spinning, all right? On Captain Jay Hood, ESPN Chicago. No, it's the Waddle Wednesday on the Captain Jay Hood boarding show, and Tommy's on the hotline. The Carrick's Tired on a Hotline. Waddle, rattle, thunder, batter, boom, boom, boom, boom. Good morning. Tommy, how are you? Go ahead. Tommy, go ahead. How are you? There's guys on my roof, but I'm good. So T-Waddle. Yes, sir. As you watched, by the way, can I just, I want to throw this out there before you go anywhere. Shay and I just did some investigative reporting. Do you know how long make, take a guess, how long it took into his head coaching career, Andy Reed to win a Super Bowl? Oh, well, he got fired after a great run in Philly, and then he had to go to rebuild Kansas City. So I'm going to say 17 years, 21 years it took Andy Reed, considered one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. And I'm one that does believe he's a great coach. It's hard to win the big game. Cat really is. No question about it. Back to you. No. Again, I told you. Your hand has a tremendous reputation as an offensive wizard. You just got to win one. Yes. You're right. And he would tell you that. Yes. 100%. Tommy, what did you think of the special we saw on PBS yesterday on HBO yesterday, right after the 700 Club, it is Hartnock's Chicago Bears. Look, and I think you nailed it, Jonathan. Like I think this is, this is the direction that they've been given from people inside the building, whether it's George or it's Kevin Warren, whoever it is, like, there's not a whole, I don't know that I've heard anybody say the F word yet. Have you? Mm hmm. Like, I think that they want to present a wholesome picture of the franchise and look, I can't, I can't blame them for that, but it is, it is very noticeable. There's no doubt about it. Yeah. It's a really good point. Fine. I didn't tune in to watch the Waltons. I just want to see what the bastard all about. But, you know, but it's what we talked about, cap, they want to be able to put a wholesome picture out there, eight to 80, they want everyone to resonate with what the Bears are doing. And I have no problem with it. It's what they want to do. Yeah. And I think it's symbolic. I think, I don't know how you guys feel, but like, I don't think that the coach Ebert Flus is one of these guys that will rant and rave and start drilling you with a bunch of expletives either. So I think it would be out of character of him from my, you know, little knowledge I know really of him, but it would seem like it would be out of character for him to be out there swearing up a storm. Right. In terms of the offensive line, Nate Davis was finally back on the field yesterday. I think he was limited. There are a bunch of his tas, Montes sweat limited, but they look like they're getting a little healthier. And then Eric Washington, the D.C. said, yeah, there's no question Montes will be ready to go opening week. We're just getting our guys there. Do you feel better about the offensive line than you did before Buffalo or the same? No, feel the same. By the way, I like Washington too. He was really, I enjoyed listening to him. Got a good command of the room. I know they love him as a coach too. So that looks like it was a really good hire. By the way, they did play really well. I thought the offensive line against Buffalo get all be it guys that may not be in the league, but they gave up one sack while the Bears recorded eight. Yeah, I would say, you know, losing Ed Oliver on the first play of the game affects the pass rush. No doubt. It probably was, you know, the greatest thing that happened to Coleman Shelton is that he didn't have to deal with Ed Oliver at any point. I'm not going to diminish. I mean, I think cap, I did the stats on outside of a 14 yard run. And I know I sound like Lonnie when I say that, but they really didn't move them in the running game, you know, the extent of their rushing yards came from Caleb in one long run. Again, I'm not trying to poo poo what you're saying. I just might, Nate Davis being out there in a glorified walk through just for, you know, for half the period doesn't soothe me in any way, shape or form. My guess would be since he's listed as weak to weak is when the Bengals roll into town and it does get physical. I hope I'm not right, but my guess would be he'll be on the bike on the sidelines because if you're weak to weak, I would think that that would signify that you're not ready to go probably this week against the Bengals in a cross practice, right? So right, yeah, listen, this I'll give you the, give you the bad side or the pessimist versus the optimist. The pessimist in me says, you know, Coleman Shelton has been in the Shane Waldron offense before he came from, from the Rams. Why did Sean McVeigh decide to them to let him go? Why did he sign a one year three million dollar contract when that position commands what 15 18 million for the top players? You know, Bates is a guy at a right guard that hasn't played a lot. They may cap, they may turn out to be a, you know, a significant surprise on the upside. Like I give you, if Braxton Jones takes another step and proves he can stay healthy and hold down the left tackle side if Kevin Jenkins can be available for 16 or 17 games. If Shelton can handle the center spot, if Bates settles in as your right guard and Darnell Wright takes a next step, then I think if all of that happens, I think that there'll be a very pleasant surprise up front. But how am I supposed to get there? You know what I mean? Like I can't sit here right now as guys are climbing on my roof and confidently say to you that, oh, it's all solved. I still think it's an issue. I really do. I'm really interested in to see more of this Austin Booker story, Tommy, because we played the audio from CBS Sports Network where Matt Ibifu sat down and kind of somewhat revealed that they're on the lookout for another pass rusher. Did you hear it? I did, yeah. Okay. So it just, I think that's interesting. But the Austin Booker, even though we got a little glimpse of that on hard knocks, I want to know more. I want to know is he could the real deal or was he Mark Anderson? You know what, Jonathan, I think the best thing for Austin Booker would be if they traded for Matthew Judon or Hassan Retik and he could be like a rotational guy that will learn, you know, learn the business as, you know, on a kind of a steady pace. I don't think he had a ton of snaps at Kansas, came out early, very raw, shows a lot of potential. I think that's the prototypical guy that can learn a lot by watching guys like Sweat and other accomplished guys play in front of him. And then you mix him in and then he comes in and Sweat gets a chance to catch his breath. You know, I think last year, they, you know, there were times maybe then Montes played too much. And I know it's hard to say that after giving a guy $100 million or whatever they gave him. But you got to keep these guys fresh. You really do. I think they wore out, you know, Khalil Mack back in the day. You know, I don't, I think these, you know, talking to someone that had over 100 sacks in the league who I lean on for my, my defensive line and my, my edge rushing information. He says like even the great ones that you pay a ton of money, you've got to make sure that you keep them fresh and you don't wear them out even though you're paying them a ton. So back to Booker though, I, you know, he's flashed Jonathan and I think he'll benefit a lot from watching Sweat and getting reps. But I don't think you want to line him up there and making play 80% of the plays now. I don't think that that would be great for him at this point. All right. We'll have more with the great Tom Waddle on a waddle Wednesday. Let's go. You're listening to Kappa Jay Hood on ESPN 1000 right. Welcome back to Captain Jay Hood on Chicago's Conference for ESPN Chicago. Tom Waddles with this right here for Waddle Wednesday on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. What was the final number cap when it came to the Dallas Cowboys is going to sportico 10 billion north of 10.3 I think, Jonathan, 10.3 billion dollars. So Tommy, I have a question regarding this with the Cowboys because every summer we're going through this player needs to get paid. This player needs to get paid and just consumes the national media about what the Dallas Cowboys are going to do. As I've said very often on this show, the Dallas Cowboys are more of a theory or a marketing scheme, more so than a championship level ball club. I would just say this that when all the talk about CD lamb or who's going to get paid, there's got to have to be some point next CBA, where the players have to say, how much is this team worth and how much are we getting paid? I would I could make the case a lot of these players are underpaid based on the value of some of these teams. Yeah, I would the only thing I would say and listen, I fight for the players. I think we've done a horrible job negotiating for the important stuff over the course of time. Like we want a few more days off and the owners are like, sure have this, we'll keep a larger piece of the pie. Those numbers are subjective in their estimates, whereas the amount of revenue that is coming in is a hard number. So they're never going to consent to the owners are going to consent to them getting a percentage of what the value of the actual, the franchises are worth and you know, there's a huge difference. Like the Cowboys are worth 10.3, I think on that same list, the Bears were worth 5.6, so there's an inequity there, where you know, you just can't use that, you can't use that number to, you know, affect what the players are going to be paid. I think what they, you know, what they need to get a vast percentage of our large percentages of, I think the number came out because the Packers have to show their numbers and I think the 2023 last year, maybe it's 2022, maybe it's a year in the past, think that the national revenue was 420, maybe it was 460, somewhere in that neighborhood, it was well over 400 million dollars, not counting local revenue. So whether it's from, you know, rights fees and all that other stuff, every team got over 400 million dollars. So I mean, what's the easiest way to make money if your business owner is to be able to, to cover your fixed costs, you know, without even sweating and think about it, when you're getting 400 million dollars plus for just being an owner and you're paying, what is it, 240 for player salaries, not to mention, you know, administrative costs, you've already covered your costs, your largest costs before you've even sold a ticket. So there's no question, I think what we can all agree on is is that this is a cash register that ain't going to stop ringing anytime soon. That's why you're building early tonight, I'm with you guys, I'm with you. That's where I would go. I have no idea what they're going to do, but, but my goodness. I had a question for you before we run out of time. What in your mind is realistic expectation for the Cubs? Caleb Williams. Okay. We'll try to keep listeners. Do you know what, Cap? It's really interesting because I've had this conversation and I've been saying this since the day that they drafted him, or they were thinking of drafting him. Numbers are meaningless to me. It's win games. Yeah, I mean, I say that, I say that numbers are meaningless, but you know, when you, when you play well and you win games, the numbers are going to follow you. So if it's 4,000 yards or it's 30 touchdown passes, whatever it is, if they win 10 or 11 games, you're, there's, it's more likely you're going to get there. What I demand as a fan, which is meaningless, I'm just saying, like my expectation level is the following. When we get to the second half of the season, he's got to be playing significantly better at a position that, that we've seen struggle over the course of the, he's got to be significantly better than the guy that was playing the position in each of the last three years. And you may say that's unfair. He's a rookie. Well, he's got a much better support staff around him. First of all, I think he's a better player. I think he plays the position more efficiently. I think there's, you know, there are some elite traits that he has that previous quarterbacks wearing our uniform didn't have, but by the time we get to the second half of the season, he's got to be playing the position at a higher level than the previous guy did at any point. And again, I said the infrastructure is much better for him. I think he's a better quarterback. So if we get to week 10 and it doesn't look significantly better than what we've seen in the last couple of years, then I'm going to be very disappointed. That's where my expectation level is. And I don't know really how to define it other than if you see it, you'll know it. The numbers will come with that. But if you look at the field and go, yeah, we haven't seen quarterback play like this for a very long time. That's when you know he's met your expectations, at least as a rookie. One great 100%. Yeah. 100%. I do believe he's healthy in the thrill for 4,000 years. I think there's a really good chance because if everything's going your way, now, listen, again, this is in the weeds a little bit, but you remember the play in the Buffalo game where he diagrammed it perfectly and they went from a single high safety and then the safety backs out to go to cover two. I don't know if it was too man or just a shell two. You know, when he sees that, what's he do? He's going to talk it and run it for a first down. I think they're going to see a lot of that coverage because I believe it's the best way to handle all the weapons they have. So my point is, is they're going to run the ball a lot. They should run the ball a lot. They should, you know, be a balanced attack, which may take some yardage away from him, but with that said, like if this offense is humming and they're winning games and he's playing well, 4,000 yards isn't a huge hurdle. It's not going to, but cap, if I watch them play and they win 10 games and he throws 25 touchdowns in seven interceptions and only throws for 3,800 yards, but they win 10 games. It's all good. It's fine. It's fine. I agree. And if he's going to get those 4,000 yards on this college football like schedule that bears have, get it before you get into the conference. Yeah. Or in the division because the bears will start until November 17th. Well, in Jonathan, a lot of times you rack up those numbers when you're trailing, right? They're moments in the second half of a game. You're down 17 and you're padding stats in certain ways. So some of those numbers can be a bit misleading, but if they're all meaningful yards or mostly meaningful yards and he only throws for 3,800 and you win 10 games, like I think we'll all have a party. Speaking of a party, thank you, Tommy, as always. We appreciate the time. How does it go now? He's a party on his roof right now. That's it. You kicking me out? You kicking me out? Find out who that hobo is on top of your roof there. It's not a hobo. Hit him straight today, Tommy. This man has been paying handsomely. He better not be a hobo. Hit him straight today. I'm not gonna hobo the hell is all here. Such a soft way to be able to go through, have a 10-minute drive to work. We come down like, man, and we work in the city. Yeah, what about next week? I'll be in Wisconsin. Captain Jay Hood talking bears in two minutes on Chicago's Home for Sports.
