I'm your host Brett Boone today I'm joined by another friend of the show And you know when he comes on football Most of college game day ladies and gentlemen welcome back the podcast Reese Dave and sweet. Thank you for joining me today. Always pleasure me. We can be great to see you All right big trip coming from going to come lose. It was course old birthday a couple days ago now You're going to look 16th of this month And I want to talk about okay, I want to see what it's like for for Reese Dave's you've been doing this a long time Very popular show college game day Is it like is it like it at okay? I play a full season some some year play well enough when we get to go to the post-season Some years we go home You know at the end of September usually at that point I Love my teammates to death But I drink training When the sneezed ends when the when the football season ends I know you go on to do some hoops and then get a little time off before the college the college season kicks up again Do you guys stay in touch? Do you talk or is it hey? We'll see you next year guys No, we stay in touch I mean it varies depending on the you know the individual relationship and it also kind of goes Right and fits and starts and you probably know this from teammates to I mean there might be some week where you know I talked to her be three times and then there might be you know three four weeks where I don't talk or text with him at all You know just because he's got stuff going on I've got stuff going on but I would say that for the most part we all stay in some degree of contact You know will will shoot each other messages, you know, I'll keep up with McAfee and you know You know if I see something funny, which you often do not every time or I'll be texting him all the time Do you see something you really like on the show? You know he hit him and let him know maybe if you haven't heard from Herbie in three weeks Maybe you bust his chops and asking you know if he's still breathing or whatever But yeah, we stay we stay in in some level of contact that tends to ramp up a little bit more as the summer goes on Then you do hoops that you got a little downtime And I know for me once again, I'm gonna put everything relative to to my program and what I did So I get into the you know the offseason for me. I might have a hunting trip I might have a trip with the family And then it's getting close to spring training for you We're getting close to the college football season again. When do you start ramping up and kind of going? Okay, it's about time we get going again Well, I started early this year. I started in late May early June putting together and it's just a it's a primer basically of Every team in the power conferences teams that I think will be good out of the group of five You know certainly included Washington State and Oregon State this year So I think I've got you know 85 90 teams in this spreadsheet that I do and I know I'll track I'll track coaching changes. They're quarterback situation. Who's portal then who's portaled out guys? They're counting on some pertinent stats. I used to go through and like copy the stats But now we've got this great program At ESPN that you can break down stats every every way imaginable and I learned the hyperlink So I just hyperlink the stats at the top of this spreadsheet and it sort of gets me ready for camp and So that I my goal every year is to have that done before Before practice starts for the teams in the fall so you can update it You can start following along and you don't feel like you're doing this thing to have a functional knowledge of a wide array of teams now obviously Teams that you need to know inside out of the teams that are at the top and you do that But you also want to be prepared if say for instance Indiana that's a little bit of a scratch when I'm saying that because I've got buddies on the coaching staff there if Indiana turns out To be really good. You want to have a functional knowledge of them So you're not starting from scratch But to sit here and say that you're diving into Indiana in the summer the same way that you would Ohio State is probably not based in reality and it's also not really productive because You're not going to spend as much time on them unless they're good and once they become good Then obviously you want to be prepared to do that Right and said it right at the last minute going wow. I didn't expect that now. I got it now I got it. Yeah, I got a scramble. Yeah, you want to say who's playing quarterback? You know for you know, Arizona State or whatever you want to you want to you know Have a good functional knowledge of everybody and then obviously teams that are at the top and that teams as the season goes on in contention You'll know them on a much deeper level Well, I'll tell you this year Reese. I Didn't do my due diligence on the Chicago White Sox and you know what it paid off With with this show and obviously with all the success it's had there's there's big expectations and and my You know I think about that all the time does it is there do you feel the pressure? And you're doing you've done so many how did how does Reese Davis? Go about keeping it fresh That's a that's a great question and a great way to put it because keeping it fresh is what is what really has been a hallmark of this show really throughout its entire run if you go back and look at the early shows And I'm not even talking about when it started in the late 80s when they were still in studio but from the time it went on the road for the first time in 93 to what we do now and The incremental changes that have come along with it Fresh is the right word. So you always want to be true to your base. You want to do the things that we do which is Celebrate illuminate the pageantry the tradition the things that make college football special But you also want to do things that will open up avenues for younger fans new fans people who might not remember You know the 1984 Boston College Miami game or people who you know might not remember You know microzier Sam Bam Cunningham or somebody you want you want to be able to still touch that To show people why it's interesting to show people why you love it to show people why it's important But you want to find you you want to find new ways to do things so you always? Try to find different ways to present the information. I think one of the things that we've done over the last couple of years is give more access and try to make sure that we Get more players on and fewer coaches not not because we're trying to diminish the coaches but if you go through a show and you've heard from six coaches and no players then that's probably you know It's probably not the best way to go about it. The college is a little bit different than professional sports. Although College football is largely a professional enterprise now But there are still coaches who are really hesitant about letting their quarterback do a quick interview when he gets off the bus some will Most won't so sometimes we are limited by that. You know, you might think well I heard Reece Davis on Brett Boone's podcast say they wanted to have players and they had all coaches Probably not from lack of asking You know a lot of times the players are players to be willing to do it coaches are a little more hesitant They're afraid it'll you know get guys out of their routine or whatever but the one I point to was I think it was two years ago when Michael mayor was at Notre Dame They Notre Dame was gracious enough to allow him to you know, he had his phone had the Airpods on as he walked the field in his suit when they arrived We were able to talk to him live before they played Navy I don't think it hurt his performance. You know, it wasn't a long interview. It was probably, you know three minutes two to three minutes, but those little things I think give flavor and access and You know, it sort of shows how the how the show has evolved and it'll take on another chapter this year And we bring saving and we're certainly going to highlight nix ability to To explain football at a very high level yet make it very understandable for people who who might well be knowledgeable fans in a game But there as you well know from or baseball and everything else you can be a knowledgeable fan And there are still really deep intricacies of the sport that you kind of have to live it If you if you have a day job If you have a day job and a family no matter how much baseball you watch You probably don't understand everything about it and the same is is true for football. I think Yeah, you know that the thing that's interesting to me and the farther I get away from being a player And especially in the modern era. I see a lot of in-game activity with coaches players When I was a player Those days where they say hey booney can we mickey up for a couple innings that to me was like man This is really cramping my style. I'm here to work seven o'clock that national anthem goes off It's all business for me and I don't have time for this entertainment But the farther I get away from the game and now I look at it from a different perspective I'm not the player in the grind I see I see what they're going after and I think it's a real positive I think if I could transform back in the to a player right now I think I'd be much more welcome to to the in-game because that's what fans want to see and that's how you grow the game So when you talk about having that coach walk on to the field and you don't think it affected his I think it's nothing but a positive given the fans an inside look letting them behind the curtain It does nothing but do great things for the game and and I thought You know, I see managers now and the baseball arena seventh inning of a playoff game and hey skip What do you think about? You know, I mean we're on pins and needles and they're doing this, but I understand and I think wow, this is great It's not really something he wants to do right now It's in the middle of a big time, but in the big picture I I think it opens it up to so many more viewers because that's what viewers want everybody's on their couch Yelling at the tv whether it's football basketball baseball But to let them in a little bit really I see that the upside is is so much greater than no We're business as usual which in my generation it kind of was I mean you were asked to you were asked to put a mic on And it really disrupted your day But but that's because that wasn't the norm that I think now I think it's great when they do these things and I know how Inconvenient they may be but if you look at the big picture Not only college football NFL College basketball major league baseball man the fans love it And you can you really feel like you give them an opportunity to be in the dugout with you It and you know, I think the generation now Brett I think they are still accustomed for better or worse than putting everything out there You know, and they are sharing what they think on a regular basis They're you know, they're very comfortable in front of cameras and you know and being recorded or being on live streams or whatever it may be So I think this generation used it a little bit differently than ours did You know, whether it was you know me covering it early on or when when you were playing So I totally get that because it was I also think it's a little bit. It was You know, that probably even 10 years ago It was more of an undertaking To put on that microphone and one of the things and there weren't many good things that came out of the whole You know a lot down situation from a tv standpoint, but one thing that we did learn is that We can we can go with less than pristine technical quality audio and video We did we did a number of During the pandemic year and 2020 when they played we did a number of coaches on You know setups like like i'm on right now on my laptop or on their cell phones And I remember one with dabbles sweetie particularly the feed was terrible But he was good and you could hear it and there you know, there were some good moments in it And one of the things that occurred to me immediately after that watching the show back It's like prior to this. There's no way our technical people would have let this on television We've said this quality is not good enough. We're not going to do this and I think That type of that people accept it now. It's not people aren't bothered by it You know, I think prior to that people were like, what's wrong with the feed? Why does the picture not look great? And now there's so much video out there just at people's fingertips on their phones That they aren't as they aren't as bothered by it. They prefer the access over the pristine look Yeah, and I mean, you're just I mean they love that boat They love that boat, but it but if given the choice they'll take the access Right. Yeah, and I think the You know in this day and age for for a sport Uh to to kind of poo poo it and not give full access I mean today's modern day consumer is going to go wait a minute. You're not going to give us access We get access to everything. All right. We'll move on scroll for the casual fan Obviously the the big-time fan doesn't matter what you do They're going to be sitting on their couch on on a saturday or a sunday afternoon But the casual fan will keep scrolling they'll find something that intrigues them And uh, you know, so I I think Going forward. I think this is the way to go and I've I'm as old school as they come But I I found myself to be opening up to the the new ways of the world and the modern day athlete and uh I look at it from you know, we never like change But i'm seeing change and i'm actually embracing some of the change that they can wow uh, it's I have a little bit more of an open mind now and i'm willing to accept things and and see if it works I think it's not going to work and then all of a sudden i'm pleasantly surprised I go wow I didn't want that see that change, but it was pretty cool Yeah, I you have to you know continually do that in our business I think you make a great point about the casual fan and the hardcore fan And one of the things that we strive to do as I talk without producers and we start planning a big picture for the season and the show and then individually each week Is you never want to alienate your dedicated hardcore audience Yet you also appreciate and take advantage of the fact that they will give you some latitude I mean you don't need to explain things to fans as if they were kindergarteners and had never seen a snap But at the same time if you can do something that might appeal to a more casual viewer And you know something that might be more in the human interest realm and out a great story is a great story when you know Green day has a rich history and legacy of telling these Remarkable stories that occur away from the field. That's not even really what i'm talking about But if you you have something maybe a hobby something that's a little bit eccentric or off beat about a player and you showcase that Even the people who really want to know what percentage of the time usc is going to blitz now with that blend It's defensive coordinator, you know, they will forgive you for that and they will take that in stride The casual fan that you would like to expand your audience to If you're just talking about blitz packages and blitz pickups and and third down offense, you know You don't have a chance to bring them into the fold and then hopefully engage them on those hardcore topics later So it's uh, that's something we strive to do each week is find a balance I can remember we had a we had a really good show at apple action state A few years ago. We felt like it was a really good show But as we as I went back and looked through it again. I said, you know, I think we had one too many You know off beat weird things, you know, they were they were all good Right now I know exactly what you're talking about. Yeah, they were individually They were all worthy of being on the show. They were all well done. They're all good Big picture, maybe one too many. So you're constantly evaluating that and trying to find the right balance Yeah, it's amazing when you would you know, and maybe everybody Maybe they do understand what you're talking about, but I get it. It's subtle And maybe everybody doesn't pick it up, but you who do this all the time you picked it up right away like yep We went over the limit and it was too much and probably 90 percent of the audience doesn't think it was too much But I know for the when I When you give individual ratings that that made me deduct a few points because man, I just went over I know exactly what you're talking about and it is a balance beam, isn't it? Because you have to consider the hardcore viewer the real knowledgeable fan But you have to also consider that casual fan that when you get too technical you lose them It's kind of like Okay, I don't know what he's talking about. Let me turn the page here Whereas that hardcore fans engaged in it really is loving those intricacies. So you're right. It's a balance beam act. It's tough and You know, you you got to walk it but the longer you do it you become good at it and and you've definitely Definitely Found a way to make it work Reese go into Dublin. We opened the show with that Uh little different going overseas. Are there more challenges for the crew Uh for everybody involved in just a normal college college game day when you're going to you know You're going to know today. Is there a difference going to double? What more goes into it? I think logistically in terms of just getting the things that we need there obviously there are Some challenges but because the footprint of the set is going to be a little bit smaller just by necessity because it's You know across the ocean and it's a one-time preseason deal and a smaller space We'll have basically one stage setup On a typical week. We'll have three, you know, we'll have the you know the demo area You'll have the you know the octagon area. We'll have a big screen area and then have the main set um, so You know that might have been forward sometimes those are a couple of those I mentioned are different names from the same thing but um Here it'll be one one set but I think logistically, um, it'll be It'll be easier to execute the show once everything's in place for the technical people if that may if that makes sense You know getting the things in place will be the more the more difficult thing. They're already You're already on it. There've been site surveys dating back to the spring So they're a well oiled machine and figuring out how to how to do it, but um You know, I think that just logistically getting everybody over there Some of the guys have other commitments and you know, I'm going a week early So I spent two or three days there with my with my wife and daughter sort of exploring the area I've never been there before so um, we'll get to do that other guys are having to kind of come in You know because they have some other responsibilities Um, I think Kirk has an NFL preseason game on thursday night before dublin's so he's gonna be in a tight turnaround situation but um It's you know, I think that all in all The show will come off. Well, but getting there, you know, it's it's something But when you undertake something like this that we were supposed to do in 2020 actually That was when this the origin of this idea came about we were going there for the Notre Dame navy game and um Back then there had been so much planning that it gone into it that we were able to build on some of that planning And you know update it and different things in terms of logistics and and how to get from point a to point b and all of that Take your business further with a smart and flexible american express business gold card It offers flexible spending capacity that adapts to your business You can also earn up to $395 in annual statement credits on eligible purchases at select business merchants That's the powerful backing of american express Terms apply learn more at american express dot com slash business gold card Hey fantasy football owners the road to winning your fantasy football championship starts now I'm matt harman from reception perception join me and james co as we take a deep dive into the position That's going to make or break your fantasy roster Wide receivers we analyze route running target share and all the metrics that matter giving you the insights You need to draft the best wide receivers as you prep for your draft Let us give you the coverage you need follow and listen to reception perception on the free audency app or wherever you get your podcasts Ryan Reynolds here for I guess my hundredth mint commercial No, no, no, no, no, no No, no, no You know honestly when I started this I thought only have to do like four of these I mean it's unlimited premium wireless for $15 a month power There's still people paying two or three times that much I'm sorry. This kind of has a built-in keep it fresh because it's something you don't normally do so just being There is going to be Stuff to talk about that you that you you won't have to think about. Oh, how do I how do I keep it fresh this week? It's already built in Okay, here's my here's my education process. I'm going to ask you some questions. I want to know the layman football guy. That's me Uh This year is going to be different. I'm a big 10 guy now, Reese I went for i'm an sc pet. Well, my whole life. I'm a big 10 guy. I don't know what that's like, you know, erin uh My little brother, uh, I don't know because he's gonna he's way more into it than I as we've talked on on previous shows So it's going to affect him a little bit more. But what do I need to know about my new conference? I Who adjust to whom uh the teams coming in sc or again particularly and I think even washington with all the turnover um You know, they tend to play a little bit more of a wide open style not that they're not physical, but they are um, there will be some historical venues that people will venture into that perhaps they weren't really Locked in on of what a great atmosphere it can be in places like uh places like, Iowa I think most people know that wisconsin's great. Um, I think even even a place like going to michigan state You know, you would think of great for basketball. Also if they're good Uh, it can be really good and intense for football. There are a lot of great environments there They value their trophies. There are more trophy games and the big 10 than any other conference old school trophies You know, they're a little brown jug and floyd of rosdale, which you know, used to be a real pig now It's just a just a trophy there. You know, there are wooden turtles and um You know all kinds of things like that. So there's a lot of history and nostalgia in the big 10 As it as it pertains to on the field. I the one thing I think that is true of the big 10 really true of all conferences is There there are the elite and everyone else and so the question for the four new teams coming in Which side of that dividing line will you be on? Initially and ultimately um You know, obviously i think Oregon's going to be on for this year and and I would imagine going forward They will be on the elite side usc would figure to be on the elite side You know We don't know what we're getting from them This year there are a lot of changes there. I watched their spring game back The other day and because I actually am calling their first game against delish here and and las vegas So I was I've watched some you know some practice tape and watch their spring game So I think that sc even if maybe they aren't a playoff team this year will still be on that elite dividing line and You know, I think just how they manage the you know The travel which will be easier in football than other sports, but how they manage the Unfamiliarity of opponents and things like that will will be will be key But it's look it's the way of the world Brett. I don't know that it's I don't know if it's great From a traditionalist standpoint for all of us But it's coming and it's going to continue to be that way There's a I mentioned the dividing line within the big 10 There's a dividing line with the big 10 in the SEC and everyone else now Both financially and recruiting it's not to say that you know the big 12 in the ACC You don't have great teams and don't have great players that go there But there are more that go the other places and there is more money You know at you know at micha general high of state than there is an NC state And you know, so that's just the way it is And so I think making sure that You stay on the right side of that dividing line wherever it is whether it's financially or competitively or recruiting Schematically all of those things will be important. I think that see will be on the right side of it and You know, I think the question is where where will you see la fall? You know ultimately, you know, will they you know, will they be able to get on the right side of it and sort of Get going into you know Not that they haven't been good but sort of get out of this stagnation that they've had You know the last few years of being pretty good and you know, will yeah It's not hey, how's UCLA? Oh, they're great or how's UCLA? They stink now. It's just kind of other UCLA You know, yeah, and uh the the weird thing for me is you they're gonna be playing michigan But it's not going to be at the roseball where where it's oh, you know, that sc in the past ever play in michigan It's a big it's a big day and a lot on the line What do you think is going to happen to the old pack 12 the washington state, Oregon state? Uh Man, there's so much going on. What's what's your take on that? Um, I think ultimately and I don't know what it will be called. I think ultimately they will Fold together with the mountain west uh whether that's in its entirety or You know a group of them, you know form a new Pack whatever the number is going to be um, that's where I think they are. I feel I feel badly for them because um Washington state still remains my favorite game day and it is mostly because Of the crusade that their fan base their alumni base went on to get college game day to come there They sent old crimson the flag to every show and they continued to do so for 15 years Before we made it to the police and it was cathartic and a celebration for them and it remains uh, I think because of that it remains my favorite show um Oregon state has been really really good, you know in the shadow of Oregon and it's You know, it's unfortunate that they got left by the wayside and I think that their best opportunity is to Instead of wallowing in this misfortune which and you know probably you don't have to stretch very far to say it was unfair at least to them to look at it in a different way because Oregon state and Washington state if they you know, if they do fold into some type of conference with the mouth and west now I would argue has a much clearer path and a much more realistic chance Of finding their way into the playoff now there have been years certainly in the in the old pack 12 where wazoo and to be You know, we're in contention For sure and they've been really good, but on on a year-in-year-out basis. You didn't expect Washington state Oregon state to be competing with usc Oregon, you know, lately washington and you know threatening to make it into the rose bowl or the college football playoff In another league where the best champion from one of those leagues is guaranteed a spot one of the 12 That's a clearer path in my judgment. Is it what they wanted? Does it necessarily solve all of their financial woes? Of course not But I do think from a competitive standpoint that they if they find a way to embrace some of those advantages that can be good for them Bob boone his stanford cardinal uh Going to the acc How stable how stable is the acc and re stavitz? Can I buy a stanford acc shirt for dad or should I hold off? I I think I think you can Brett I mean a lot of that will be decided by the courts with the whole grant of rights thing and you know clemton and porta state exploring their options but um, I I would say moderately stable, you know obviously this could be you know, the thread could be pulled and it could come apart, you know, if a the Court decision that stands up goes the way of the teams that would like to explore their options But I think it's moderately stable right now as they try to look at different ways Of distributing revenue based on how you perform Um, you know, I I mean well smu is coming in with stanford and cal and they're not getting anything You know for a while. They you know pretty rich alumni base. They've had some people step up to to fill that void financially so You know, I think some of those things might appease some of the problems But you know, there are those who believe that you know in the next few years that a lot of this will will change and it's Uh, the question is whether the acc can come up with a plan and a formula that will appease those members who feel as if they're being put it far too great and competitive Disadvantaged because the revenue stream is not what it is and the sec in the big 10 Man, there's a lot going on. Okay. Tell me I think I got these right Texas and oklahoma from the big 12 to the sec a z or Arizona A state colorado utah, but they're going from the pack 12 To the big 12 Stanford and cal pack 12 to the acc SC ucla Washington, Oregon packed well to the big 10 Okay, I think I got that right You did who's going to have the softest landing Who's going to have how would I put this who's going to have the rudest awakening For for this year or long term? Um We're going to go long term long term. Okay. You see la um You know because of some of the state of california Political things that they have to deal with with the cal system and you know, I've read some I've forgotten the details, but something they're they've got to pay some type of Basically, it sounds like alimony almost to cal for you know leaving and breaking these things up I think I have that right, but I think just because of the stagnation that we talked about I think long term they have the biggest challenge and Doesn't mean they can't win this year doesn't mean they can't win in the future But I think they would be the one that I think everybody else is sort of equipped to go into the big 10 and have success And texas and oklahoma are certainly equipped to go into the sec and have success And the teams that you mentioned going to the big 12 I mean many believe utah is already the favorite in the big 12 people talk about the big 12 this year and they say it's deep I disagree with that. I think it's wide and what I mean by that is I don't see teams in the big 12 That have these great ceilings where I expect them to be in the national semifinals in a national championship game But I also don't see very many if any teams that have this awful floor where they're terrible teams they're all They all have the potential to be pretty good to really good And so that's going to create a real competitive environment and the teams you mentioned areas on the states a little bit Probably behind on it's uh, you know on it's curved toward contention or competitive Uh balance they're probably a little bit behind right now is kenny dilligan tries to get that program underway in his second year But utah is probably the favorite Arizona has in my judgment the best past catch proven past catch combination in the country coming back no one fepita and tenerola mcmillan and then colorado has the you know has the dynamic presence of deon sanders and you know first round a first round pick probably according to most draft experts at quarterback and shadoor sanders and maybe Uh, maybe the most complete player in the country and travis hunter who plays both ways and plays corner back and wide receiver both exceptionally well so Those teams all have some things going for them And you know even you look at the different different schedules this year in terms of immediate awakenings and Oklahoma for instance in the sec has just a brutal schedule and Texas relatively speaking Uh, you know, maybe got a little easier time of it texas does have georgia, but they have them at home You know, I think texas if memory certainly miss alabama. I think they miss lsu Um, they have think they miss they miss old miss. I'm going to look right here believe they do Um, so yeah, they they miss old miss also who I think is going to be really Uh, really good this year and they miss mizuri who we finished in the top 10 last year So texas texas had a little bit of an easier landing for the initial year, but I think both texas and oklahoma um are Are prepared to do well for it to give you an example. I mentioned those teams texas missus Oklahoma plays Uh, they play at ole miss they play at mizuri they play at lsu and have alabama at home You know, so those some of those games that texas is missing Not only is oklahoma have to play them. Oklahoma is playing them on the road now that'll balance out over You know over other seasons, but that's something else. I think fans will have to get used to in these Huge conferences now It's not only anybody's trying to give anybody a break or anything like that when you're dealing in big tens case with 18 teams Can't play everybody, you know, so you're going to you're going to have some schedules at fall sometimes and you miss a bunch of people like Rutgers misses everybody that you view as a contender this year and therefore Rutgers might find itself in the mix late in the season because They're playing more teams like them instead of having to deal with ole high state michigan organ and and uh teams of that ill It's amazing how many how many different storylines there are Um, you you mentioned dion had dion on the podcast recently um how big of a story is is year two Undercoach prime going to be in cholera. I'm still going to be big buzz I think it's going to be much more dependent on improvement and success now bret because there was a novelty aspect um They could not have asked for anything better in terms of generating attention and excitement and buzz Then beating the team that had just played in the national championship game on Their home field on the opening saturday of the season. So the early part of the season last year really just fed into um The charisma that dion has the you know the excitement the novel approach that calorado took By bringing him in and bringing in basically an entire new roster year two People are going to make snap judgments right or wrong. It's working or it's not working Because the two guys I mentioned earlier about calorado, you know dion sun should do her and travis hunter Um, oh almost some others Are going to be in the nfl next year So if there's not improvement shown this year on the field and the one lost record and then you know They lost some close games when they you know they got whacked a couple of times too If there's a you know if there aren't more Competitive games if they don't seem as if they have made progress on the lines of scrimmage I think there is going to be a collective Well, now he's lost shadoor and travis hunter. What happens now? And so I think it's a really important year for calorado to show improvement. I I know they have different guys on the lines of scrimmage now Up to this point. I don't think there's any realistic Um reason to view them as any type of conference championship or playoff contender But if they could just you know get to get to a solid bowl game showing up improvement to do that I think uh people then would not panic, but if it's another You know if it's another four and eight type season with shadoor getting beaten up and you know and and losing You know, no notice respect to your dad's uh cardinal But you know blowing a big lead against stanford and you know and getting lit up in the second f by You know by a team that was rebuilding itself You have more of that and then I think the questions are going to come is this really working or is it all You know what's it all just um You know just energy from the force of his personality that garnered the attention because even though he makes people mad You know this from you know from knowing him as well as you do He makes people mad sometimes but if you're ever around him, it's almost impossible not to like it You know now, maybe you know, you might tell me privately you may call me up after today You're going you're wrong about that But my impression my impression is whenever I've been around him is that it's almost impossible not to like the guy You know he has he has a gift You know he does some things that I don't agree with you know in in news conferences sometimes But you know, I mean I think all in all he's a likable guy and people want to like him They they want they want him to be successful or Or you also get the benefit of people who really don't and either way, you know, he's he's kind of uh You know, he's certainly not lukewarm, you know for people who who evaluate, you know, how well he and how he goes about it he's a polarizing figure he's He's got as much charisma as anyone i've ever been around Uh, he's got that he's got that it factor. He's got that in fact that you're around him Uh, you know, you're with a special special guy love him or hate him Uh, we're in the middle, but yeah, he's a likable guy He's he's he's got that prime time and it's a shtick and he's had it for a long time And it's what puts eyeballs on the team, but I've found this in sports Um Everything's that's great But at the end of the day It's when maybe and when you don't win, uh, it is charismatic as dion is Um That comes that come they're going to be harder on that type of personality Then they are a warm guy that goes about it. I mean you want to soar with eagles. It's like when things are tough You're going to get double the attention when things are tough But you're also going to get the adulation when things are going really well So it's it's a catch 22, but you know, that's the way dion's always been and you know, the one thing I asked dion that I was Weird teammates a couple of years. I was never you know, I've I don't know him as the football dion. I knew him as baseball dion But he was so great and a hall of famer I asked him I said dion is it ever tough because you were such a good db What are the greatest of all time? To have those expectations that the guys on the field aren't you and sometimes do you have a problem going? You know, he's probably his brain works as well. You just do this in this such well Everybody can't do that. You know, we have we have sons that that are playing in the minor leagues right now And sometimes i'll talk to my son and i'll say Well, just do this and he'll look at me like i've got three heads and go dad I can't just do that and I snap out of it and I go okay now How can I give him just a fundamentally way that everybody has to do to be successful? So so You know and dion had a had a pretty good answer for me and uh, but yeah, it's when you're that great What do you what do you say if you don't mind my I find this fascinating. You've seen this a lot with superstar players that you know, some some are successful a lot are really not what did he say he said that he really he he he's thought about that a lot and he's really Overtime and his coaching because he coached previously quite a bit before he got to colorado. He said early on it was a challenge for him But he says now he's in that mode where He just expects certain things from his players He has expectations for him and he takes himself completely out of the fold and and and it's not dion sander's prime time It's prime time coach and what he expects from a coaching aspect and he's able to separate him the player versus him the coach now And I think with time That could happen, but yeah, I that's why I was so curious I said because guys that you know guys that you played with playing with a Ken Griffey jr It's like kenny. Do you really I remember when I was a kid And I just got to the big leagues and we're the same age Reese and I think i'm the cat's meow You know getting to the big leagues really quick i'm a great player And it really dawned on me. It was my first real humble pie that I had to eat as a professional I'm sitting in the kingdom And man I just I just got there and I thought I was just gonna Keep rolling like I was in triple a and big leagues a little different and it's a learning curve And I remember Kenny just walking through the locker room with his hat on backwards like he'd been there a hundred years You know he's 22 years old. He's got four years in the big leagues already I just got there and I think i'm something special And he would just away look at me. It was like he was my dad, but we're we're peers I've never had somebody my age be that much more elevated, you know, and and I we'd be going over and I'd have edgar martinez and Jay buner and we're going over tonight's pitcher because I have only been in the big leagues for three weeks And they're trying to give me tips and jr Just kind of walk by me go booney. What are you trying to do tonight? I said jr I'm trying to survive and he goes man When it gets what it gets too complicated. He said just see ball hip ball and he just keeps walking And edgar looks at me and goes hey booney. Don't listen to him. He's a different he's a different animal So I've always had I said he can't understand what us mortals are going through trying to prepare for a big league contest He has no clue. He has no clue because he's from a different planet He gets out of bed his his body works differently than ours and he was just born to hit and there's only a few guys in my life That i've ever been around uh That were that gifted. I mean i've you know you play with some great players and some hall of fame players and some batting champs this that Uh, but not too many that I've played with that is such a natural thing where it's just it really doesn't matter and I really To get to the highest level in baseball as a hitter most of the guys Had an approach they had a They look for pitches. They sit out jr Used to tell me just see ball hip ball, which sounds great. It's a little league philosophy See ball hip ball. Yeah, that's what we do But really at the highest level facing elite pitchers. There's more to it than that But I after a while of watching Kenny for years and years. I just thought I think he just I think he does just see ball hip ball Which is remarkable for me. Yeah remarkable because you with the great pitchers You can't just see ball hip ball. You've got to get on one when they have two three plus pitches You're not going to hit all three You got to pick one and hopefully that day he goes with that one And if he doesn't you tip your cap and you move on to to fight another day But I really believe at the end of the day. He just saw saw ball and hip ball and and You know, I'm getting way off topic here, but For a deon, you know, he probably sits there at the beginning of coaching He's watching his players and go wait a minute when the guy does this you just do that Without thinking everybody doesn't have that Reaction time like you did so interesting, you know, we could talk about this forever, but it's but I don't know it's always It reminded me a lot of um In a different way we were shooting some some some of the homedepo commercials in june as in time with Nick saving We were just talking about different things and you know, in this time of year people always say, you know The work the grind the this the that you know made all of these gains in the weight room increased the speed We're doing this different things schematically And you know and then there guys like deon who can just show up and do it but I asked nick I said What Is it what in your coaching experience when you've had a guy who's done all the work? He's meticulous. He does his homework. He busts his tail. He does the right things I said, but he still doesn't have the success That would that maybe even his athleticism would indicate, you know, they're always players You look at I mean I mean they're extenuating circumstances for these two guys You look at guys like jimark's Russell who you know nick had early in his early in his career before he left and went to the dolphins you know, even you know, even ryan leaf and again extenuating circumstances for those two guys, but There are also there are any number of players that fans will think of it go man I thought this guy was going to be great, you know And he seemed to be a hard worker and a good guy And he didn't have some of the extenuating circumstances that just never worked for it. I said why? I said, I'm sure there's not one reason but more times than not why And he thought about it for a minute and he said, you know He said I think it's because They become outcome oriented instead of process Oriented and so like you were talking about with dealing with the the pitcher and if he executes a different one Then you're sitting on you tip your cap and move on Sometimes guys can't do that, you know, and I think I think it even comes to play in when guys are coaching like um, you know In dion's case is their progress relative to the process of them getting better Or is it just whether they're four and eight or seven and five? You know again this year and that kind of thing and if you are only about what the record is then You know his point of view was whether a player coach or whatever you are less likely to you're less likely to have success than you are if you Kind of stay true to the work Don't worry about the outcome as much as doing Staying true to the process and the truck trusting the process it's You know, we we all look back on our careers, you know And of course, I'm sure if I asked Reese Davis as a young man, if you could change anything, what would you change? You know for the most part pretty darn successful And and have done great, but I'm sure you have things that, you know, booney I wish I would have done this instead of this we all have things You know, hopefully we look back and are relatively happy and say, you know, I don't buy the guys that I wouldn't change a thing Well, you know, some negative things happen and you learn from that I get it But of course I would have changed A few things if I knew what I knew now then You know, it's like I would have I would have had this thought process earlier in my career Uh, you know, you go to you get to a certain level and you hit goals in your life And I was always goal-oriented. I want to hear I want to go here. I want to go here Uh, but I really didn't start to study and really put that into play till the second half of my career really having a deep rooted Approach to the game and trust the process Maybe maybe as a 22 year old. I I didn't have the ability to trust the process That's when i'm talking to young players now I've got to know who i'm talking to, you know, because the the conversation isn't for everybody Just like when you're on air and you're talking to the the expert the real knowledgeable football fan or the layman Football fan. There are two different conversations. Are you talking to an 11-year-old or are you talking to a mature 18-year-old man? uh, there are There are different ways you go about it but You got to be ready for it and then and then you need to embrace it and you get to a point of maturity where you can embrace it and But I don't know that I trusted myself when I was 22. I don't know if I said randy johnson's pitching tonight throws a hundred He'll backdoor me with a slider in a 2-0 count when i'm ahead in the count and I know that But do I have the discipline because I know he's going to do that Do I have the discipline to get off the fastball in a 2-0 count? Throw caution to the wind and sit on that break a ball and if he throws me a 2-0 fastball down the middle Do I still have the ability? He's gonna throw the breaking ball and if he wastes a fastball and now it's 3-1 Do I still have the discipline to sit on that break ball because nine times out of 10 here it comes Just as is when you're not sure and you get off that pitch Here's when that cookie comes So it took me time it took me time before I learned and and I really could tip my cap to pitchers when they completely went the opposite Of my plan because I didn't just think about my plan when I was on deck. I'm thinking five deep And uh, I don't know it's just I think sports It's fascinating to be that side of sports and and the process and when you say Saban was saying trust the process not the actual results if we're results oriented In the on the baseball field. We're gonna be disappointed. We got 162 games And and you're gonna get killed some night and that's just the way it is But do you have the ability to come back the next day and go hey if I trust this process 162 in the end I am going to be the best player individually. I can be Which helps my team win. So I don't know there it is. There it is There's my philosophy for today, Reese. It's uh, it is what it is. All right Uh couple new match-ups. I'll get you out of here shortly couple new match-ups you're looking forward to this year All-star closer kenley jans and we have a question. What's the best podcast of all time? This boy isn't boring, baby. I'm ron bradford and every single day I'm sitting down with the biggest names to show you this great game is the greatest game. It's my podcast It's my passion. It's a cause I started more than two years ago And it's now the most prolific national daily baseball pod. There is another fact So jump aboard the bib express follow and listen to baseball Isn't boring presented by was sami hot cloud storage on the free odyssey app or wherever you get your podcasts Uh, I mean, I want to see you mentioned one earlier. I want to see usc in michigan Uh for sure, uh in a venue other than rosbo regular season game. I think will be will be really cool Um, I'm looking forward to I'm looking forward to texas in georgia I mean georgia is going to be in austin Uh to take on texas the same weekend in austin as a formula one race that so that That place will be kind of up for grabs in a lot of different ways the entire weekend. So i'm looking forward uh looking forward to those and you know, there will be some Little quirks of the schedule like there There's even there's a game between arizona and kansas state both now and the big 12 But it was scheduled when arizona is still in the pack. Well, so while it's too big 12 team just not a competition You know, so they're going to be some little quirks like that. Uh, you know, it'll be fun explaining and then you know a couple other little things Uh, right that people are going to as they watch college football that are going to be a little bit different this year Um, they're allowing Coach to play your communication in the helmets like they have in the nfl shut off at 15 seconds They're letting them use ipads and on the sideline a certain number of them And unlike the nfl which is limited to still photographs The college ipads they can look they can watch video now. They can only watch video of the current game from three angles have good The high end zone a high game angle and the broadcast angle But they'll be able to you know on the sideline come back and say okay, you know I threw an interception what coverage was that I thought it was covered too, you know, it said, you know, it turns out it was You know, man free or something and um, so they'll be able to do that And there's also a two-minute timeout late knee tap and the officials for some inexplicable reason Have told us not to call it a two-minute warning. You say don't need a warning So i'm sure i'll slip up on that during the USC. You don't care. Don't you dare. Yeah, I know it's not a warning It's not a warning. It's a two-minute timeout, but it but like the nfl. It'll be um Two-minute mark an automatic timeout will come for stopping to play Okay, I've got I'm going to come along one day With ries Davis and his crew and i'm going to get to to to watch College game day life, but you want i'm your buddy and you want to give me the best experience of my life Where are you taking me? Ooh That's that's uh, I would say we need to take you to an sec venue I would say probably for the entire game day experience. I would take you um LSU for the game on saturday night would be great Um, I think tennessee has been a great venue for the show for the background So I would say it would be one of those one of those two places or or texas a name It would be an sec game though because they they approach it just a little bit differently um In those places. So I I the invitation is open you're welcome anytime We'd love love to have you if you you know, if you want to come out. Oh, I would love it I would I might keep I'm gonna I'm gonna take you up on that race All right, uh for those of you watching the brett boom podcast uh recent myself We both have sons that are playing the front tier leg Uh front tier leg is an independent leg, uh, I believe Uh, chris davis recent son is in juliet and my son's in brockton Now they they hooked up at some cool pictures. They got at the beginning of the season Um, okay. I want to know what kind of dad are you? Uh with chris when you when you show up at his game. Are you nervous? Are you walking around? Um, are you hands on do you stay away from him? Do you try to keep them? Because people are gonna know hey re stavis is here from college game day So people are going to know you're there. Do you try to be incognito or are you that? I don't know. What kind of dad are you when it comes to what would chris tell me? he would tell you that That I'm relatively quiet. I only say encouragement and I try to say it to everybody on uh, you know on on his team, you know, and it's nothing big. It's like You know, like when, uh, Christopher and jay played the other president. It was like, all right here. We go jay. Here we go You know, you get down you get down. Oh two. It's like maybe we go to let's go. That's all I say But I am the type of dad. Honestly, I'm churning man Uh, you probably don't because you're big league experience. I'm mean and it's uh, I try to mask it and and I remind myself every time I don't know enough to help him after the game. I'm there to Celebrate the sounding board letting vent frustrations or let him just move on It might be one of those nights like you talk about, you know, it might be a night where you got, you know, three hits It might be a night where you got beat, you know three or four times You you take your cue or I try to anyway take your cue from him, but i'm not gonna lie, man I mean, I I churn pretty good when i'm watching Reese, I'll tell you what. I don't care how much experience I have in this game It's the it's the been the toughest thing for me Watching my son and wanting so bad for him to be successful Uh much harder than anything i've ever done Anything any game any struggles I ever went through watching him struggle. It's like Oh Now when i'm in person when i'm at the game. Oh, i'm cool as a cucumber. I yeah. Oh, yeah, no big deal You know inside though. I'm like you i'm like Cool as a cucumber on the outside and people think that well you're used to this bread at your arena It's right up your alley. Oh, yeah. Yeah on this on the surface. Oh, yeah, this is no big deal But inside my head's thinking all right What can I say tonight because i'm like you? I don't want to I want to bring positive messages When the kids come to me when jacob comes to me, uh, that's That's my opening all right have a seat because you might be here a while But I always let him bring it to me, you know, I don't call him after he's 0 for 4 and And uh, what what were you happening? What happened on that third about no i'm not that guy I never have been now if you open the can of worms dad or you seeing something in my stance and this and that my load Now we can talk about it constructively, but i've never done that but man i'm with you. It's like You think you think going through your career. You've had challenges and and we both have i'm sure Reece Davis had a lot of challenges. I certainly have um A lot of humble pie But but when I watched my son, it's like Man, my humble pie was easy compared to watching him chase the break a ball two feet off Of the pitch. I hate it. It's tough. It's uh, i'm telling people bread. It's awesome and it's awful Because you know, I've I've told um I've told him from the time he was a little kid because I mean he played other sports But this is why he loved this is why he loved me as a little kid And I used to tell him, you know, whether this ends You know with i'm telling this when he was young whether this ends That you can't make your high school team or coopers town I said or anywhere wherever ends along the spectrum in there I said, I just want you to be able to walk away from it know that you gave your best Know that you did everything you could be successful and that you can and you can live with that You know, and I think most of us can like that. I mean, obviously, you know, you you'd want him to You know, everybody in the frontier league wants to get picked up by an affiliate You know, uh, you know again a chance to to go on and do that And hope that happens, but whatever happens, you know, you want to be able to give the best Gave everything they could and uh, and then see what happens from there and and be able to walk out with your head up and say So without man. I gave it all, you know, I gave everything. Yeah As long as you can look in the mirror and have no regrets Ah, I could have done this Could I have worked a little bit harder? Could I prepare as long as you Don't give yourself that option of having any of those questions that ask yourself in the mirror You're going to be just fine and life's going to be fine for you. It's the people that That mail it in and and the half ass and then you've got those problems and that can haunt you for years Just look. Oh, what if I would have done this and whatever if you eliminate that put it put it all in the table This ends two ways for athletes. We either decide gracefully to bow out Or they'll come and take your uniform away. There's two ways it ends You know, hopefully you can make the decision, but there's two ways in it and and I'm with you as long And there are kids and we support them and and I we want Nothing but the best for it. We want them to go to the big leagues and be all stars. Of course Whether that'll happen. You never know, you know, it's probably a long shot Uh, but to watch them it is it's a joy and it's it's cool. Do you check them out on the app? Do you watch every day? Every day. Yeah, not to get long winded here, but the other day my wife's sitting there and i'm watching the game I got it, you know playing on the tv you can Shoot the app on the tv and all of a sudden it was off and she goes, well, what happened to the game? I said, I cannot watch anymore. She goes, what do you mean? I said, well in between the commentary from these these guys on the app, which really where grinds on me after a while I can't well, I cannot watch him swinging another pitch over his head. I said, I can't watch it I said if I don't watch it, maybe I could go to the frontier league and look at the you know, the Up-to-date stats and maybe he'll sneak a hit in but I don't have I can't watch this anymore I'll tell you something that that happened to us brat and christmas been yeah, it spent some time on the angel list and he's playing um, he's got a Pretty significant deal with his need and he's playing through because he had a uh, I would advise staying away from the wall and shombard We were watching on the app and he he started off had a good start And I'd already had a couple hits and we were clobbering them that night and there's a ball and it's going to be a home run ball and he He was playing right that night wall juts out from the side There is not you know, it's not a normal wall. And I guess as he first started taking his path Uh, he thought he was going to be clear of and have in have room And so he's trying to reel in this ball that ended up being a home run ball and he runs No pad. No, nothing didn't apparently didn't get a call or didn't hear a call over him standing And he runs full speed Into that wall and drops. I mean drops, you know, and now I'm in the camera on the app You're talking about cutting away from my wife and I're sitting there going what? Did he get up? You know, I mean it was For a little while there so Yeah, this camera I can't wait for those walls too, man. So those camera angles. They don't capture the best angle No Well, you know, uh race. It's always a pleasure having you on. I appreciate you coming on And I might take you up on the college game day. No, I I hope you will bring calling you. That'd be great Yeah, bring bring Jake. That's the other thing too. You get these relationships and while we went to see When go way up way new England You know, we went up to see the game And uh, you know, obviously you want your son's team to win But every time jake came up, I told my wife said, okay, need jake get hit here. Here we go That's right. You still you still root for it, man. I mean, I keep up with him and and watch too. He's on. I'm happy for him He's playing well, he's playing really well. Well, I please appreciate this race. Have a great time in doubling I'll be checking out. I'm gonna do not say two-minute warning. Do not do it I'm really watching that as well. I'm gonna be keeping tabs for the two-minute warning.
