I'm Susie Wargen talking with Dr. Carolyn Parsi, neuropsychologist at common spirit neurology, St. Anthony North about Alzheimer's and brain awareness month observed in June. Memory loss isn't the only symptom that can indicate an issue with the brain. What are others? People with mild cognitive impairment or early stage dementia can also have difficulty with word finding or putting their thoughts into words efficiently. And they may have trouble with problem solving or decision making or they may also have increased anxiety or depression or become more isolated or withdrawn. We raise awareness this month because even small issues should be discussed with a health care provider. So if you notice changes in memory or thinking, I encourage you to talk with your primary care provider and Medicare has an annual wellness visit that includes monitoring of cognitive functioning and aging. And so even if you think your symptoms are minimal, we can always do a brief cognitive evaluation to determine whether those changes in memory or thinking are more than just normal aging.
