This is your morning routine. Listen to respect my name. Cap and G hood. That's right. That's right. We're bad, huh? Watch the show on Twitch. Follow ESPN 1000 Chicago. Stream the show on the ESPN Chicago app. And on in there. 100.3 HD2. And on ESPN 1000 Chicago. No, no, no, no. David Kaplan and Jonathan Hood. Good morning, everyone. Bring him out. Bring him out. Bring him out. Bring him out. Bring him out. Bring him out. Bring him out. Bring him out. Bring him out. Bring him out. Bring him out. Bring him out. Oh, God. Welcome to the Cap and G hood morning show on ESPN 1000. And we're streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. We've got Jay. We've got Jay Moore. We've got you for a three hour ride on this deal breakers Thursday. What up in phone lines for you at 312-332-3776. That's our telephone number. And Cap, you mentioned the other day. It was important for the Cubs to be able to win against the Cleveland Guardians. They fell short a couple nights ago and they fell short last night. They got swept by the Guardians losing last night by the score of six to one. There's nothing wrong with being an optimistic fan, Cap. There's nothing wrong with hanging in there through the good and the bad. Hell, I'm a White Sox fan. It's really bad. But the point is though, Cap, is that you took on a real last team against the Cleveland Guardians, a real team, a contender in before the World Series. Best record in baseball and the Cubs fell short. Yeah, they absolutely 1000% got their head kicked in and Cleveland. They had opportunities the first two games yesterday. They had no opportunity. They just lifeless, lifeless. They get a day off today. And then the next, I believe four weeks, they don't play a team with a winning record. Okay. But why should I believe that it's all of a sudden going to turn around again? Well, Cap, it is hard for me to give up on my team. It's it's baseball. I understand it's baseball and anything could happen. But you see, when you've already dug the hole so early, it's hard for you to come out of it. Yeah, because even though against the White Sox and against the twins and against the Cardinals, against the Royals, the Cubs played really solid baseball. So I'm the best baseball we've seen all season because it was consistent and it was offense there. But now you've gone right back. You've progressed back to not being hit the baseball, having two runs in the last two games won't get it done. I don't care who it is. And what I would tell you, friend, is that against the Guardians, against the Blue Jays, whomever, that slump carries from series to series unless someone can break out of it. It's not like, well, you've scored two runs against the Guardians last couple of games. And that will take on the Blue Jays. Everything will be better. Not necessarily slumps. You can streak as a slumping team. You can also streak as a good hitting team. They're on the downside right now after the White Sox series. 100% they're on the downside and highly disappointing. And there's no one I'm more disappointed in than the manager. It was advertised that we had signed, we I'm saying, as a Cubs fan, we had signed a difference maker. The Cubs went out and got the guy that all of us fans went, whoa, how about that? 40 million? Love it. Nice job, Tom and Jed. He's worse than Ross. I don't see any fuck with David Ross, man. I saw fire and passion and accountability. Explain to me why you used Julian Merryweather Monday back-to-back innings, two inning say, or a relief appearance. Yes. In a tie ball game that you need like a starving man needs a sandwich. He has a pitch back-to-back innings, a multi inning appearance since April 5th. Now, you're going to use him in the most high-levered situation of the series. I said this to you that day. That was awful. Last night, why are you using him in the eighth inning? Four to one, you're probably not coming back. Six to one, you're absolutely not coming back. He got his head kicked in again. He's not very good. Julian Merryweather, man. He's not Mariano Rivera running out there. He's not very good. So my whole problem with it is why are you pinch hitting David Bodie who the organization has buried at AAA for two years and you're going to pinch hit him from Michael Bush. Why? You didn't think David Bodie was good enough to be in the big leagues and now he's pinch hitting for Michael Bush. I'd rather let Michael Bush get the learning experience and if he makes it out, he makes it out. I would prefer to have him at the plate against a righty or a lefty. I don't care if the guy throws with his, you know what? I don't care. Just some of the decision making of this dude does not make sense to me and then he meets the media every day after the game and there is absolutely no fire, no passion, no, this is unacceptable. We got to get this good. Nothing. Yeah, I mean, it's disappointing. No blank. No, I thought we played two pretty good games the first two days. Today was, you know, I'll think offensively, you know, we didn't do it, you know, we didn't do a good job. We didn't do enough today. Really? And that's disappointing. That is a good baseball team for sure. They've got as good a record as anybody in baseball right now, but, you know, you know, getting swept is no good. It's a bad take. Damn. I mean, does that fire anybody up? It does not. Again, maybe I'm the maniac that would come in and flip over the food table and start yelling and that stuff wears thin and I'm the first to admit it. Immature, meatball, dumb, I get it. Does he ever, ever, last night, in fact, this whole series, the umpiring both ways was horrific at the plate. Correct. Both ways. Last night, I'm watching pitches that are five inches off the head. That's not a strike. No, I'm watching pitches down the middle ball. Those are not balls. Those are strikes. I mean, is there any accountability for major league baseball? Again, I don't want robo on players. I've made that clear, but there should be like they have in the minors now, a challenge system. And you should have the ability to challenge and they go, oh, yeah, that one was actually not a strike. I mean, those things should happen, but this Craig ever come out and go, this is ridiculous. You guys are doing a horrible job here and fight for his guys. Never see it. That's right, Cap. What's needed is some fire in that clubhouse. Somebody that can lead this ball club. I mean, you're 5963. Someone's got to speak up. You know, like a guy like David Ross, right, almost 365 days ago, got to have someone that can fire up everybody. They're a really good team, you know, best team in the league. So record wise, I mean, they're really, really good. You know, we got to do some little things a little bit better, try to get runners in from third lesson to outs hasn't been our strength here this month. You know, guys are, guys are late and all out there. It's really good team. Kind of disappointing. Yeah, the one difference is they're a really good team, you know, best team in the league. So right now, it's disappointing, really good. You know, I do some little things a little bit better. It's pretty good. It's the scene from the office on Pam's like, they're the same picture. I never saw that. See, but I'll take your word for it. But cap, here's the point. Here's the point. This is not to make fun of David Ross or Craig Council. What I'm telling you is, is that both guys were in the same situation with this Cubs team, because I know a year ago, around this time, we were talking about how come the Cubs don't have enough relief pitching to get themselves over the hump. And David Ross, you just sit there. And what you would tell me is if you're David Ross, who would you put out there? Because look at the roster. Same thing with Craig Council. Same thing. The criticism is valid, but it's the same scenario. Because Craig Council's like, who do you want me to put in there? As far as your bullpen's concerned, a bullpen that's been solid now, but against quality hitting, you see what happened against the Guardian. So the conversation we had about Ross is the same conversation we had about Council. Why would you put that guy in there? Why would you? Because this is the roster that Jet gave them. Okay, but Monday night in a tie game, why is Lopez warming up after Merryweather has fortunately navigated the seventh? Yeah, we gave up a double play ball and 108 mile an hour smash. They got out of it. Why would you run him back out there when Lopez is already warming up? That makes no sense. I hear you. If you told me that's what that dude does, he pitches multi in April 5th that he spent four months on the injured list. I understood. So that was just bad managing, bad, but also if people can hear what you're saying, cap deep down, you're not happy with the roster. No, and you shouldn't be because the way you turn this around is your bats get hot where you could be carried by like a freaking Aaron judge like what the Yankees and the Sox yesterday or Soto someone that can carry you when you're going through the doldrums. You don't have that. And you don't have a good enough seven to eighth and ninth to be able to get you out of situations. You just don't. You've been very fortunate to be even be in this situation right now, but you just know at the end, it won't be good enough. Ask Dan's be if it's still June. It's fair. And then I got to get a text from Sylvie. All it says is, are the Cubs back? That was at 751 last night. And I wrote him back and just said your Cubs thing. It's there. I got a ha ha. Hey, Dan's be. What month is it? It's June. Still June. June. Right. What about now? Now you're 59 and 63 up the track. All I know, Cap, is that we'll go through the rest of the season, but a Jed Hoyer who will return next season. If Jed Hoyer does not make some significant changes to bolster his bullpen 7/8 the ninth and to find a bat or two, it's going to be the same situation. It's embarrassing. If I'm a fan of the National League Chicago Ball Club, I would say how small Mark and Milwaukee doing this with Murphy? How are they doing this? It's like me as a white Sox. How's Cleveland doing this? Small market Cleveland. It's embarrassing. It's embarrassing. It's pathetic. Yeah, it's beyond pathetic. And for me to say it's over. God, I so look forward to the baseball season. It's my favorite season. Love football. Yes. Excited for the Bears. All of it. I enjoy watching the Bulls, even though they stink. I enjoy watching hockey. I'm a sports guy. That's my life. That's what I do every single day. I was watching an Aaron Judge hit the homerun last night. To say the Cubs seasons over. Yeah, my reality is, yeah, it's probably done. But it throw in the towel and go, we don't play a team. I can always find a way to rationalize in my mind. Dumb. Yes. But that's who I am. Let me just make sure that you understand 12 minutes into this show this morning. You, Cap, are not allowed to get off the bandwagon. I'm not getting off. Not yet. Now, you know it's done, but you have to ride this thing until the wheels fall off. You have to continue to be on this thing. It is true that the Blue Jays and the Detroit Tigers and the Miami Marlins and Pittsburgh, yeah, they're a little bit underwater. A number of those teams. But then my question to you is, well, one of the Cubs going to do about it. What are you going to do about it? Yes, you it is correct. You mentioned the under 500 teams that the Cubs are facing. But what do you think the Cubs are? Also an under 500 team, also under achieving. Or maybe that's who they're supposed to be. I don't know. I guess at the end of the season, we're going to find out is this who they're supposed to be? I didn't think so because I thought that Jed would push his chips in the middle of the table to be able to be a playoff team, a playoff contender. That's what I thought. Like, Oh, this is a new season, man. He's going to learn from his mistakes last year. Oh, he didn't know the offseason of Bellinger. That's what it was. And in Menaga, and Bush, solid moves. Did he have a closer? I've said it a million times. No, he did not. He did not have a closer. He entered the second straight year without a closer. Don't tell me Al's lie is because he's not now he's gone with Tommy John. You get the Blue Jays for three. You get the Tigers for three. You get the Marlins for three. You get the Pirates for three. The Nationals for three. The Pirates for three more. And then you get the Yankees here in Chicago. Listen, you can't thumb your nose down at those teams because the Cubs under achieved two and their under five hundred two. You don't have a right to do a cap. Yeah, you got 18 consecutive now against lousy teams. And what are the Cubs? A lousy team. Wait a minute now. You basically have to go 27 and 13 the rest of the way, and everyone in front of us to play 500 or worse baseball, right? I don't even know if the Cubs have a 27 and 13 in them. In fact, I would say they don't. I love by the way, my partner here thumbing his nose down at the the opponents that the Cubs have coming up. The next four or five series, they're under 500. It's the equivalent of you saying, hey, that person at outfit looks terrible. And then here you come walking in with holes in your socks. You're right. That's bad. You are correct. I would not dispute that at all. The Cubs, by the way, this morning, as you drive to work, 59 and 63 six games behind in the wildcard. That'll be all. That's good. My J board. We love go Cubs go underneath that. Don't disrespect the taps. Damn it. You're disrespecting the dead, that awful song. That song's phenomenal. So long, Cubs. So bad that boog doesn't even come to work anymore. Where is he? Cubs baseball. Hey, so long, everybody. Now we get turned to the Bears. Right. Maybe we can go find a third base coach for 30 million. That'll be our big off season edition. Salute. Chicago Cubs, thank you for the memories. As they lower the casket on Cubs baseball. So long, everybody. See you next year. So bad that shambi doesn't come to work. Here's Beth Mullins, Beth. What? What's going on here? I mean, not just one game, the whole series. Like, I love boog. He's a buddy. I love boog. But where is he? See, I told you, Cap, when you're in and Shay, I think you agree with me, when you're going through the muck and the mire of a season, you need your guy, your play-by-play guy. So you like them? I like them. I'm a fan. Play-by-play person, Beggar Pardon. You want to have your the person through the ups and downs. Harry didn't leave 162, no matter what. Yep. Oh, I got everybody. Harry, Harry, and Wrigley Phil with Wayne Larravey and Steve Stone. Right there. And he wasn't taking innings off. It was not. He did not. Nope. Nope. I'll move over to the radio. Let me tell you about Harry real fast. I was doing Cubs rain delay. They're in LA. It's the game didn't resume to like one in the morning Chicago time. Yeah, you're going to have to come downtown. We need rain delay. Okay. I'll be there. I drive downtown. It's raining in Los Angeles. Yeah. And I said, I'll take some calls if Santa wants to jump on for a short segment. So Ryan, he's like, I'll do the whole thing with you. He loved doing it. And in the background, I hear, Hey, Dave, what am I? Chop liver? I'll take the calls. Oh, you will. Please. I did two and a half hours. It turned into a rain delay theater. Me, Ron, and Harry, and people were calling in. Well, let's go to Jonathan on the south side. And you're out with Harry, Kerry, and Ron, Sano. Dude, I just got out of the way, man. Absolutely. It was unreal. Today, you think announcers are doing two and a half hours of wrangling? Absolutely, Harry loved it. Absolutely not. They're going right to whatever network they're going to. They'd potted up like, all right, we'll let you know when the rain subsides. So long. Right. Here's a replay for the nine thousand time in the top 10 homers in Cubs history. And Harry saw me at Wrigley like a week later. Thank you so much for having me on your show. Thank me. Thank you. Yeah. And time with the call did a little radio show. It was amazing. Tell me you got that cassette someplace. I don't lost in the divorce. Um, three one, two, three, three, two ESPN, three, three, two, three, seven, seven, six is our telephone number. We're talking to you about the Cubs is Craig Council worse than David Ross. That's really the question because we talked about both managers. People say I was good. It was Ross's time to leave. Okay. So how's this any better? It's no better. So let's talk about it. As we talk about the Cubs. Right here on the cap and jayhood morning show on Chicago's home for sports. It's a bad take. Follow Chicago's home for sports on Twitter at ESPN 1000 cap and jayhood are back on ESPN Chicago Chicago Chicago's home for sports. Cap and jayhood on ESPN 1000 is streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. With you till 10 o'clock then Mike Greenberg comes in at 10. Then it's coming to your go 12 to three. What will instill be a 2 30. And then it spares weekly with Jeff and Tom and then blackened up dollar at 7 30 right here on ESPN 1000 cap. We're talking about the Cubs. The Cubs right now are six games behind the wild card at 50 and 63 cap. It was going to be a brick in the face against Cleveland. It just was. I didn't know if they don't get swept. I thought they would salvage the series because you need some momentum day off and then Toronto could the could the Cubs sweep Toronto? Yeah, absolutely. Home cooking and by the way, just a note for you and for all much older Cubs fans. The Friday game will be on Apple TV. Take that. Just be ready. Fortunately, I have Apple TV. Wow. It's a public service. Like if my mom was still alive. Rest of peace, miss your mom. If she was still alive, she loved baseball. I would be getting the call or my brother Bruce would be. What is Apple TV? You don't have it, mom. Sorry. Oh, God. Yeah. Not good. Not good. Apple TV. That'll be the first game of the series. 120. Correct. Just just putting the public service out there because bar owners and I'll slow Cup fans. All right, let's put on a little David. What is this now? Top 10 homers again on marquee. Right. Or the Doug Glanville show. Right. Look like where's my cup baseball? So that's where it's going to be. Another Apple TV game. 200 500 teams. Nice feature, but it'll be 40,000 Wrigley film. It'll be packed. Yeah. Good warm day. It's going to be great. Beautiful. Nice. There we go. So is Craig Council worse than David Ross? That's our question because to me, Cap, to be fair, David Ross had to deal with a lot of the same things that Craig Council is dealing with now. I know you did not like Jesse's response earlier in the season when we asked him, like, you know, what does Craig Council bring to the table? And Craig, and Jesse said, well, Craig Council's observing in his first year observing. When you get the money that was paid to you, you don't get a chance to observe. You got to push the right button. Correct. And you were in the same division. It's not as though we hired the manager of the Nippon Ham Fighters of the Japanese League. And he came over and I got to get to know the culture over here. And no, you were in freaking Milwaukee. Right. You saw us enough. Yeah. You followed the Cubs. This is the job you wanted. And that's the performance I'm getting. Merry weather for two innings in a tie game that you need. Come on, Craig, you're better than this. Now, listen, a lot of the same characters are on this Cubs team, but I will not give him the grace. You know, I won't give him grace is because Joe Matt didn't get grace. When he first came on that first year, first year, rolled in here. It was like, they're horrible. And they won 97 games. Yeah. But he wasn't there observing. Hmm. If I push this button, what will happen if I put it's like the new car? Like, what is this button? What does this do? Oh, I'll call you automatic windshield wipers. Interesting. Let me ask you a question. How much has Bryant gone on to be a winner in Colorado? He has three clothes, Bryant. He has not. He's street clothes. Yes. That's all he is. Guys always in street clothes. He's never in a uniform. Yep. How's Harvey Baez doing in Detroit? Subsubstandard. How's Addison Russell doing in the Korean League? Just absent. How's Rizzo doing in New York? Ups up and down. Not very good. And not even playing now because he's hurt. Yeah. The only the only guy that's gone on to have really good success is the guy that walked out the door. Uh, Schwer. Mm hmm. Nobody else really. Wilson Contreras a little bit. Okay. Guess what? Joe Madden looks smarter and smarter. The longer this thing goes on. Yet Theo and Jed pushed him out the door. We don't like the way you do things. We want you to change it. Really? Okay. Let me know how it works out for you when I'm gone. It hasn't looked very good. But he won big. Mm hmm. The biggest of the big. It's not as though those guys went somewhere else and started winning championships. Right. So let's be fair here. The Brainiacs from the Ivy League don't know everything. There's other ways to skin the cap. And Joe Madden did it. Lincoln the Hills. Here's Dave on cap and J. Hood. Dave. Good morning. Morning. All right, guys. Great. What's up, Dave? Cap called yesterday. Told you that you need to let reality set in about these cubbies. I'm a biggest club fan. But again, you gave me a stat yesterday. They said they were in the last 20 games. They won or they went 13 and seven or something. I don't remember exactly. They were 20 and 12 go in their last 32 going into the Cleveland series. Yeah. So they lose again yesterday. They were five games below. Now they're six. Just let it go. Yeah. We can go next year. We'll get them next year. That's hard for me to do. That's hard for me to do. That's my team. It's hard for me to do. And I told you, I got rid of the marquee at July 3rd, but the last day I had marquee because I knew it wasn't going to go anywhere and I'm not going to keep paying for this. And I completely understand that. I do. I guess, Dave, the question is, do you believe the Cubs will get it turned? Maybe. Next year. Next year. Yeah. Because this could be Jed Swan song if they don't. That kind of money. I wish I had any of his money. Yeah. So there you go. Thank you, Dave. Appreciate the telephone call. Look, I know Jed has made the comment that he doesn't, he's risk averse. Well, guess what? You cannot next year run the same thing out there with the no trade guy in left field, the no trade guy in right field, the kid in center, Cody's not going to opt out, Michael Bush over at first. We'll figure that out. The guy with the six something OPS that everyone thinks is Babe Ruth, Nico Horner. He's fine. He's a good defender. He plays hard. He's got a six something OPS. How about the hundred and seventy seven million dollar shortstop? I mean, let's be fair here. Parade us. He's fine. Glad we got him at third. I mean, let's be fair here. You entered the season without a closer and you do not have one guy. It's been seven years since they won one playoff game. Yes. Seven years. I don't think people realize that like Tom Ricketts in that seven years. I'll add it up at the break. I'll bet you they've spent in seven years. Well north of a billion dollars. They've got zero playoff wins. Does anybody show any freaking fire over there? And again, I have said this. Ricketts did the most amazing thing. He won a world series. And he saved my favorite ballpark. Yes. He gets a lot of credit there, which at times I think people don't give him the credit. He deserves what he did. That said, at the end of the year or in September when they are officially the ground is or has opened, they have lowered the casket and the dirt's been throwing on. We've already played taps. That's done. Last right's given whatever you call it. He needs to have a press conference and it can't be a press conference where he feels he needs to educate us on. Well, the TV deal is this and that no, he needs to have a press conference to go on putting everyone in this organization on notice. I appreciate how hard you work, but we're a results oriented business. We got men and women that are trying to get their kids through school and they're going to work and they're doing this and they're doing that and they support us with their time and their money and their heart. And we owe it to them to put a better freaking product on the field. So I'm just letting everyone in the organization know from the ticket taker to the usher to the parking attendant to Jed Heuer's desk. If we don't show significant improvement next year and make a playoff run, I'm making changes because I'm not going to keep taking my family's money and lighting it on fire. Thanks for coming. Have a good day. I want to hear that. Depending on what happens in this upcoming off season, there's a crack in the window, but this era of Jed, not Theo, but Jed, the window's closed to win. Your window is closed. Just is like if you're not significant changes to put a winner on the at Riggly Field next season, the window's closed to win. It just is. Yeah, I don't know if I would cosign the windows closed because you've got a ton of talent coming, but again, it's Jed's window though. That's what I mean. Like he's. Jed's window. Yeah. Jed's window in the Cubs window. Like because it's one and the same. Jed's window, meaning that he won't be here if you can't contend next year, shut it down. The window will be closed. Right. But there will be guys around the game ago. I'll take that job. You see the system? Sure. You see the ballpark? You see the upgrades? I can go in there and turn that thing right around, but you're going to have to stop being risk averse. You're going to have to make an intelligent smart signing of whoever. Now, look, Ron Soto is probably staying with the Yankees. He grew up. He liked the Yankees, but the Yankees have some financial constraints too. Yep. And their owner said our payroll is unsustainable. So if he's truly going to get four hundred fifty to five hundred million dollars, Tom Rickett should not get out bit. If he says I'm leaving, yeah, I loved it New York, but I'm going to move on. There's no scenario where you should get out bit. He is exactly what you need. Hey, the bears missed out on Matthew Judon. So what's next for the bears? We talk about it next cap and Jhood on ESPN 1000 and also on our YouTube channel. Oh, I'm sweating. Checkmate one six and you have suppression on target. That's why I see him in my shirt. Shot or no shot with cap and Jhood on ESPN 1000 and ESPN Chicago at that's why I see him in my shirt. Good morning and welcome in to the cap and Jhood morning show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. We'll have deal breakers coming away at eight thirty five but right now, shot or no shot and it's. And it's what? Shane Orley. And it's what? Yeah, Shane Orley, muscle memory kicking in there, camping and it's. Oh, that's right. Nobody hold. Correct. Hmm. I don't see it on my screen. Take that seventh floor. Hotest property at the station. Hot. Take care of us. Let's go. Here's Shane Orley. Wow. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning Lindsey. Let's go. Oh man. I love Lindsey. Damn. You know the reason why I didn't go to the series against the the Yankees as a Sox fan is because every time the Yankees roll in here, Shay, I'll go to at least one or two games and the Yankee fan, whether they live here or they flew in because you know this city. You've been around here enough now to know Shay, there's fans of every type in this city. They might be buried in the suburbs someplace but I mean there was thousands of Yankee fans out there for the series against the Sox, right? Yes. Last time that they were in here, so obnoxious. I got my Sox gear on. Hey, where's your rings? Hey, where's your rings? And I go, I got six of them in eight years. How many you've got? Throughout the Bulls when you want to shut a Yankee fan up, bring up the Bulls. That'll be all. That'll be all. Where's my rings? I'm the next doing. Yeah, then it's done. But they're so obnoxious and over the top. Where's your rings? Ah, my rings are at the at the center. Six of them. How about you? I've got one over at Regley. 26 spot. Well, we've won three, I think. To the Yankee fan. 24 behind. Yeah. Yeah, but yeah, I mean, they just want to throw that baseball on you. But yeah, I got Michael Jordan. What'd you got? Yogi? Yeah. Seriously, enough. So over the top. Shay. All right, now we'll get to the White Sox Yankee series in a moment, but I'm going to start with the Bears reports yesterday suggest the Bears were in conversations with New England for Matthew Judon right up to the buzzer when he eventually was traded. The Falcons reports are New England was trying to get a second round pick out of Chicago, polls wouldn't budge. So Matthew Judon goes to Atlanta, but shot or no shot. It is at least good to hear the bears are active and trying to be aggressive in the market. That's a shot. Absolutely. I'd expect nothing less from my general manager. And I'm glad that he is aggressive because if he thought, rebuild here, we're not ready to win. Remember, Jed said it was opening that we're not at the level of those other teams. Correct. And that's how he approached it. They were not aggressive. But polls all in thinks his team's ready to go. Yeah, that's a shot. As we were talking about earlier, Cap, there's so many general managers that'll tell you we like our team. We like our team and never budge, never make a curse removed, never make a big swing. Today, let me just say this. Today in the 2000s, where there's so much information that's out there, Cap, whether it's Sports Talk or just going online. Man, you can't lie to the fan anymore. You could bury in the paper when there wasn't any much information out there. Columnists would write it like once. But now as a fan, you can just go online and see where your team is from a salary cap standpoint. What's going on with free agency? Why didn't they do that? I mean, so there's so much information available now. So you really can't hide. There's a time that you could hide. You go up to a general manager and say, hey, why didn't you get so and so? We like our team. What do you mean? Could have done better. Yeah, 100%. But I love that polls was aggressive. Very aggressive, as they said in Rounders. All right. So let's see how aggressive he should be because the bears missing out on Judah on his one thing. A lot of fans can't help but notice Bengals come into town. Ryan Polls about to get a very up close look at edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, who requested a trade from Cincinnati in the off season. He has said fully committed to playing with the Bengals. He expects to be on the team. He expects to be their long term. But he still doesn't have a contract. He's kind of been a hold in through camp. I think he's starting to practice now. Shot or no shot. Ryan Polls should do whatever it takes to get Trey Hendrickson. How old is he? I believe he's early thirties. Again, how much does he want? How much does he want? I got it 29. He'll turn 30 in December. Okay. And how much does he want? If he's looking for 32 million dollars a year for six years, no, I'm not interested. I got to know what the parameters of the deal. Is he a great player? Yes. A move like that cap has to put you over the top to solidify yourself as a perennial playoff team. You want that to pay dividends like like Julius Peppers did for the bears as far as his production. Remember, we went through that Hall of Fame week and how many sexy had with the bears? It was amazing. Again, you weren't getting the Super Bowls with Julius Peppers because of the infrastructure. But you want to have that kind of production, that guy, a guy that could just completely change the fortunes of the bears, increase the chances of getting to the quarterback and solidifying your defense. Is he that guy? Is he? He's a really good football player, man. Then I think it's always worth it. Again, I just have to know how much and how long? Three or four years. Yeah, if you said, hey, we'll give you a three year extension and you get X number of dollars and it works. Yeah, all in. Is it more about what he wants or is it more about what they want? Because, look, if he's committed to being there and he said he's going to play for them and he's not going to sit out, then they could just shut the doors on you completely unless you're going to offer him a first. You really have no leverage in the conversation because it's not like the sound retic situation where he's sitting out and he's a detriment to the team. He's active. So what do you think? But you said he's a hole in, right? He's starting to practice now. He's been at practice this week for the Bengals. I think he's been taking part. Then he's a no shot. Then he's not moving. If he's willing to risk it and put it out there, he's not moving. It's a no shot. So the retic thing is the most realistic. And they're just so desperately, right? Like the Bengals, if it's not going to happen now, when is it going to happen? Jamar Chase isn't at camp. He left amid his holdout. You've got problems with Trey Hendricks and the cap is not going to get easier for them. Like it just feels like now or maybe never. Now with Burro, who knows? You could be involved for a long, long time, but yeah, I think I've said this to you before. I think that the appearance of Joe Burro and the Bengals in the Super Bowl will be all for Joe Burro. It's going to be one to me. He's one of those guys that's going to be a great quarterback. But it just it just won't that dog don't hunt organizationally for me. Joe Burro is going to be great. It does feel like Rivers with the Chargers a little bit now to me like I could be completely way more talented. I can be completely wrong. I'm just saying that, you know, there's other teams in that conference too. Somebody has to be the guy like Ben Rothlessberger was the guy that just wore Tom Brady's jockstrap like Burro could be all a favor. He could be great. And he could also wear my home's jockstrap for his career. That very well could be. This is not this is not a shot at Joe Burro cap. I'm talking about from an organization standpoint, like again until it's kind of like LeBron in the in the East all those years against the Bulls, right? So you got to knock off the King to be able to get to where you want to be. You got to knock off Patrick Mahomes if you're Cincinnati to be able to get to where you want to be. Well, it was funny. Evan and Kanti this morning on sports, but like we're talking about there were a lot of people that believed Manning was bet even when Brady was one of the titles, Peyton Manning is a better quarterback. We've heard that before, right? But to get a championship, he had to go through Tom. Correct. But he said there were a lot of people that in the league believed no Manning's the better player Tom's in the better situation. I found that interesting. I think we've heard that before. But I don't see a scenario where Burro is better than Mahomes. You know what I mean? That's correct. I would agree with that. Mahomes has the great situation and he's the better player. I think you and I go to a bar of of those that saw the 80s quarterbacks. We could find someone in that bar that will tell you that Dan Marino was better than everybody, including Elway and Montana as a quarterback pure quarterback. Correct. Even though he did not have the hardware those those other guys had. Correct. Burro could be that and it's not against Burro cap. It's just you got to knock off Kansas City and then whoever else and Josh Allen Buffalo. That's the one thing we don't hear in Chicago. We as Bears fans don't have to look and go. Oh God. Caleb's great. We love how it's trending. But you see the dude we got to beat out? Mahomes. He's on the other side. Yes. I think all of these quarterbacks say our chasing ghosts at this point and Mahomes would be that ghost. There's another championship that's going to be there for him at the minimum, another championship. He is a ghost. Shane Orley. All right. I mentioned I'd ask about White Sox Yankees. Yesterday Aaron Judge hit his 300th home run. He became the fastest player in MLB history to get to 300. Don't get mad at me when I asked this. I thought for a long time after pooholes retired, after a rod retired, we weren't going to see another guy. Certainly not active. Get to 600. But judges last four seasons. He's got 62 39. He's at 43 already this year, 37 a year ago. There's a chance he gets to 60 again this season sitting 17 away on August 15th. Shot or no shot. Aaron Judge could hit 600 home runs. He's how old? 32. 32. Let's give him six. Five really good years. That'd be DH for the majority of that out of the field. DH. Yeah, I don't know about the majority, but he'll be a DH at some point. Boy, I'm going to say no shot. He gets a 600 because he won't play that many games or. I mean, he's he's a big man. Those bodies don't last at the size that he was. He's six, seven. Six, seven. Yes. He's a monster. I'm going to say he gets somewhere in the fives. He can walk away today and be a Hall of Famer. Yes, he's amazing. 600 home runs. And the total right now is he's at 300. Fastest player ever to 300. Correct. You know, Cap, the reason why he won't reach 600 is because he won't play every day. Unless he does become like a DH. And if he comes every day, DH, can he be able to reach that goal? Don't think so at the age 32. I mean, he's going to play. Well, how many games is he going to play this year? 155. Yeah. Yeah, I'm pleased for about that. Yeah. Yeah. He played 157 last year. I mean, I got two years ago, 106 last year. He's got hurt, and he still hit 37. Yeah, he's a monster. Captain guys today don't grind as far as trying to play 160. 162. I don't think you're going to get that anymore. So for healthy, though, he plays that's one thing I've given that dude when he's healthy, if he's healthy, he'll play 150. You don't look to sit up. He there's no Jake in it from him. The only way he gets there is that if he is not playing the field later on in life, he's going to have to be an everyday DH. At some point, I agree. I think so, because you don't want the stub toe or the toe issue he had or whatever the problem was. But he has talked about wanting to be one of the all time great Yankees. And to do that means you got to play. Yeah. You want to be talked about with Maris and Ruth and DiMaggio and Mantle and Garrett, you better play. Shane, has nothing like being able to have that that TV show in which you have a choice, either cut the black wire or the red wire, either wire that the socks cut, it was still an implosion in their face. Yeah, we're going to walk solo to get to judge. You've won 29 games. What difference does it make? If you're not going to hit them, if you're not going to pitch them inside, just pitch them like, here's a smart idea. We're going to walk solo because you've been killed to get to judge, pick your poison. And he's going to say to you, Grady Seismore, Jonathan, so does it home runs in four consecutive at bats. He is hotter than a depot stove. Remember that term? Yes. And that's your problem because you won't pitch him inside. Take that. I don't have guys that know how to do that. Well, then, you know what? Just like ours, you cut those guys. Don't pitch inside. How about that? Enough with Chad Cool. I'm good. Wait a minute. The last night it was like 915. It's the sixth inning and I'm dozing off. I'm like, I shut the game off. It's two one socks. Wake up this morning. Open the ESPN app. 10, two Yankees. What the hell? Oh, Chad Cool. Duh. I don't understand it. And by the way, that pitch was not bad. It was up and in and still judge was able to knock it over. He just turned like Tomahawked it out of the laser beam. Watch Chad Cool's reactions. Who's that left the bat? He went, oh God. Man. See you later. Shaky, squeezing one more. Yeah, I actually need some help from the two of you. Something I have complained incessantly about. I think I have to make an adjustment to the way I'm living life. I hate realignment in college football. I hate the way the sport looks. I think traditional rivalries are great. Most of them are dead now. I think a lot of the tradition in the sport is dead now. However, stub hub found that nationwide ticket sales were up 42 percent year over year. Better regular season matchups. Obviously you get things like Ohio State Oregon. Fans are more engaged. More people want to go to games. More people want to buy tickets. So shot or no shot. I need to give it up. Embrace new college football. Well, that's a shot. You get, you know why? Because you're one of the youngest guys here. You can't be like this old grizzled veteran at 29 and say, I don't, I want my college football back the way it used to be. Can't do that. You got to be the one that's progressive in this spot. You have to embrace it as much as me as a longtime football college football fandom like it. You have to embrace it. Because here, here's where we are. The team that these divisions cap is like a CVS receipt. It's amazing how long these things are. But this is what it is. Like, I know you guys, I'm sure Abdullah Black, you guys are so excited that college football's back. And it's more ho hum for me. I got watch. I like it. I'm way more excited when baseball's starting. Way more. Okay. NFL? Different story. But I disagree with you, Shay, that college football's a train wreck right now. Because for someone who's not a die hard likes it, not a die hard. I'm going to turn it on and go, Oh, I got Ohio State Oregon, a conference game this week. Well, that's the key. You have more meaningful games now in September than you ever had before. The complaint from the novice to the die hard college football fan is I don't get enough quality early in the season. I wait for the conference schedule to come out. Okay. So you're still going to get the little sisters of poor here and there. But because these conferences like the SEC and the Big 10 and the Big 12 as expanded, Shay, we're going to get some quality match ups. Yeah, absolutely. Little sisters, the poor is big in NIL now. You better be careful. But I actually, I think, okay, a lot of those schools are spending money. Windsor, Ontario school for the deaf. Watch out. You watch out. Some of these schools are like, where do they get these players? Cap, I think being a die art is the reason why I'm kind of against this guy. I find it. I'm going to be with you. I'll be more excited about baseball. I find it difficult to be as passionate about college football as I used to be reason being used to be able to watch players start out at a school as freshmen and you could see there's some there. They develop into stars and you would eventually have your school winning a Rose Bowl or winning conference title. It's not going to happen anymore because a freshman kid is going to take off and leave. You won't get the chance to watch those players develop. I'm not going to listen to you. If Michigan, yeah, but you're a Georgia fan, you're going to be in it every year. If Michigan State gets some freshman five star that looks awesome year one, he's going to be on your team the next season. How am I supposed to be passionate about that? I'm not going to listen to you trying to tout baseball to me. You're better than that. As a college football fan, you're better than that. What do you cap? I'm being hyperbolic. I'm going to be more excited about the grind of baseball to college football, but it just I'm calling it out. Passion is a fan. I've lost a lot of it. No, you haven't. Wait till the season starts. You'll be texting me in it for every game. Appalachian State and San Diego State tonight, honey. Yeah, but that's me now. I'm Rob Lowe with the NCAA hat. I can't be the like the Michigan State passion. It's running out because I can't have the experience I had 10 years ago when players developed into stars. They'll just leave. Yep. Welcome to college basketball too. Right, Cap? That's it. That's why your got your friends are leaving. They're all getting out. They're like, I'm done. We got around the NFL. Don't forget it's a deal breakers Thursday on the cap and Jay Hood morning show. Follow Chicago's home for sports on Twitter at ESPN 1000. Cap and Jay Hood are back on ESPN Chicago Chicago's home for sports. Knitbowl sucks. He sucks. I'm just a fan. I'm not a football about you. I love the Green Bay Packers. The guy is front, but there we go. This is not Detroit, man. This is the Super Bowl. I love winter. He starts to come and he'll fall down. This is a really thickly built guy. I mean, what's the answer? You're looking for all these things here. Time to go around the NFL right here on the cap and Jay Hood morning show. Deal Breckers comes you at a 35 around the NFL with Shane Orling. All right. Yesterday, Dan Orlovski made waves. He ranked the NFC North teams by their receiving course. He said he included everything all past catchers. I found it difficult to include running backs when I made my list, but so he included all the wide receivers and tight ends as the receiving core for these teams and ranked them. He had the Packers number one, the Vikings number two, the Bears number three, and the Lions number four. I totally disagreed with him on its face. I came up with a way to make my list. I want to know from the two of you, your lists for the NFC North ranked by their receiving course. So I'll put Packers fourth. Yeah, 100% agree. I put 100%. I put the Lions third Viking second because Justin Jefferson arguably is the best wide receiver in the league. And Edison's good too. He's not a core by himself, but you understand the point when just Justin Jefferson, and I put the Bear one. That's what I did. I am 1000% cosigning where Johnny's at. I had the Bear one because they have a deep tight end room led by Comette, Mercedes Lewis, Gerald Everett. They've got an outstanding wide receiver room with three guys that can really play, you know, Dunes A. Moore and Keenan Allen. Tyler Scott's got top end speed top end speed. So yeah, 100% I'm right there. Shay, what the reason why I put the Packers fourth is that because you hate the Packers because that's not the case. We're just talking about just quality like Christian Watson and Romeo Dobbs and Wix, Jayden Reed, Bo Melton, good names. And I'm sure that they'll be utilized properly in this offense because the Packers more times does not have a really good offense to play off worthy with Jordan Love. However, I just think that the Bears, based on what they have, is the best that's in the conference. So I kind of dug in on this and ranked each position wide receiver one, wide receiver two, wide receiver three and tight end. If you were ranked first, you get four points second, you get three points, third, you get two points and fourth, you get one point. And then I gathered the point totals and I ranked them out. I want to take you through this step by step. You can stop me if I'm ever out of line. Okay. Wide receiver one, Justin Jefferson first. Yes. I'm in Ross St. Brown second, DJ Moore third and Christian Watson fourth. Okay. Wide receiver two, Keenan Allen one, Jayden Reed two, Jordan Addison three and Jamison Williams four with Detroit. Yes. A wide receiver three, this may be controversial. I know he's a rookie, but I think wide receiver three in this division is not especially strong. I went Romadunze one. Romeo Dobbs two, Kaleef Raymond and Detroit three and Jalen Naylor in Minnesota four. And then a tight end. I thought it was fairly obvious. Sam Laporda obviously is number one. I actually put Cole Comette ahead of TJ Hockinson. Oh, I see I'd have Hockinson one. Wow. Hockinson starting the season on the pop list. That's handled injury a couple times in Minnesota. Last year, the numbers suggest some decline opposite for Comette. Numbers suggest a little bit of progress. More touchdowns than Hockinson had last year for Comette. I think he's been a more consistent red zone target. Yeah, I go. Hockinson one, Laporda two, Comette three and who's Green Bay? Luke Musgrave. He just says he's caught 30 balls last year. He was hurt. He didn't play enough. I don't know enough about the craft kid to say that he's any better than the worst tight end in the division. Not saying they're bad. Just ranking him in the division. So the way it shook out for me and even if we flip Comette and Hockinson, it wouldn't change anything. Sure. Bears 13 points number one. Lions 10 points number two. Vikings nine points number three and Packers eight points number four. I have Lions or Bears one, Lions two Vikings three Packers four. I could absolutely cosign. That's fair. And I could not disagree more with Dan Orlowski. I don't know how on earth the Packers have the best receiving core. We talked last year when they beat the Bears in the final game, Jordan Love was throwing to dead people. He was making both Elton look good. Yeah, 100% agree. So just so I'm clear with the wide receiver one, would that make DJ more the third best wide receiver in the division? Based on how you have it because Justin Jefferson and you have who's that too? Amunra. Amunra, Stain Brown and then DJ Moore. I'm not convinced Amunra is better than DJ Moore, but his numbers last year say he is. Yeah, the last two seasons would suggest Amunra St. Brown's top seven wide receiver in the league. So just on what you've been able to accomplish in the last couple seasons, Amunra has to be ahead of DJ. It's not a shot at DJ. They're both excellent receivers. So cap based on on the shape projection here, he's got 311 as far as wide receivers. DJ Moore three, Kane Allen at the top of the second tier and Roma Dunes say the top of the third tier. Correct. So pretty good kid. Yeah. Yeah. Ready. Good kid. And then like you said, Shay, the tight end is interchangeable. I got everything a cold command. I think he's fine. I think he's going to be even better this upcoming season. So it whether it's Atkinson or Comette, Laporta is still the best tight end in the conference. Absolutely. Laporta might be the best tight end in the NFL. Yeah. Oh, stop. Jesus. Primity. Are you kidding? Like really? That is not an insane statement. Yeah, it is. He had almost a thousand yards last year. That is an insane statement. He graded his tight end two at PFF is a rookie. It's not insane. You can just say that you didn't watch that much Laporta. I feel like you watched him quite a bit. But for me to come out and go, this guy who is a rookie was one of the three most productive tight ends in football, might be the best tight end in football is not some Jesus Christ. Stop. Take that's absurd. Actually think it is. I think it's a bad thing. I think you don't know better than that. Jesse. That's a bad take, Jesse. So who would be number one? Kelsey's over the hill. Kittle, who knows? Kelsey's still a monster. Kelsey's not a monster. Kelsey had the worst season of his career last year. So who's number one? He was worn out from sleep with Taylor. I mean, come on. He's then good. Then Laporta's better because he's not sleeping with Taylor Swift. What do you want me to do? George Kittle's a better player than Laporta. Definitely. Definitely. Mark Andrews is a great football player. Yeah. Sam Laporta is not the number one tight end. You're better than that. I disagree and I am certainly not better than that. I genuinely think Sam Laporta's tight end one going into this season. Okay. Good luck to you. He's got to go out and prove it again. If he does, I'll admit it. But what if he doesn't, Cap? If he doesn't? Yeah. I'll be like a hobo on hand sandwich at that guy. Dealbreakers is right around the corner on the cap and jhood morning show.
