It was important for the Cubs to be able to win against the Cleveland Guardians. They fell short a couple nights ago. They fell short last night. They got swept by the Guardians. Losing last night by the score of six to one. There's nothing wrong with being an optimistic fan, Cap. There's nothing wrong with hanging in there through the good and the bad. Hell, I'm a White Sox fan. It's really bad. But the point is though, Cap, is that you took on a real last team against the Cleveland Guardians. A real team, a contender before the World Series. - Best record in baseball. - And the Cubs fell short. - Yeah. They absolutely 1000% got their head kicked in in Cleveland. They had opportunities the first two games yesterday. They had no opportunity. They just lifeless. Lifeless. They get a day off today. And then the next, I believe four weeks, they don't play a team with a winning record. - Okay. - But why should I believe that it's all of a sudden going to turn around again? - Well, Cap, it is. - It's hard for me to give up on my team. - It's baseball, I understand. It's baseball and anything can happen. But you see, when you've already dug the hole so early, it's hard for you to come out of it. Because even though against the White Sox and against the Twins and against the Cardinals, against the Royals, the Cubs played really solid baseball. Some of the best baseball we've seen all season 'cause it was consistent and it was offense there. But now you've gone right back. You've regressed back to not being hit the baseball, having two runs in the last two games won't get it done. I don't care who it is. And what I would tell you, friend, is that against the Guardians, against the Blue Jays, whomever, that slump carries from series to series unless someone can break out of it. It's not like, well, you've scored two runs against the Guardians last couple of games. All right, we'll take on the Blue Jays. Everything will be better, not necessarily. Slumps, you can streak as a slumping team. You can also streak as a good hitting team. They're on the downside right now after the White Sox series. 100% they're on the downside and highly disappointing and there's no one I'm more disappointed in than the manager. I mean, it was advertised that we had signed, we I'm saying as a Cubs fan, we had signed a difference maker. The Cubs went out and got the guy that all of us fans went, whoa, how about that? 40 million, love it. Nice job, Tom and Jed. He's worse than Ross. I don't see any far with David Ross, man. I saw fire and passion and accountability. Like explain to me why you used Julian Merryweather Monday and back-to-back innings, two innings say, or a relief appearance in a tie ball game that you need like a starving man needs a sandwich. He hasn't pitched back-to-back innings, a multi-inning appearance since April 5th. Now, you're gonna use him in the most high-levered situation of the series. I said this to you that day, that was awful. Last night, why are you using him in the eighth inning? Four to one, you're probably not coming back. Six to one, you're absolutely not coming back. He got his head kicked in again. He's not very good. It's Julian Merryweather, man. He's not Mariano Rivera running out there. He's not very good. So my whole problem with it is, why are you pinch-hitting David Bodie, who the organization has buried at AAA for two years? And you're gonna pinch-head him for Michael Bush. Why? You didn't think David Bodie was good enough to be in the big leagues, and now he's pinch-hitting for Michael Bush. I'd rather let Michael Bush get the learning experience, and if he makes it out, he makes it out. I would prefer to have him at the plate against a righty or a lefty, I don't care if the guy throws with his, you know what, I don't care. I just, some of the decision-making of this dude does not make sense to me, and then he meets the media every day after the game, and there is absolutely no fire, no passion, no, this is unacceptable. We gotta get this, nothing. - Yeah, I mean, it's disappointing. - No blank. - No, I thought we played two pretty good games the first two days, today was, you know, I'll think offensively, you know, we didn't do a, you know, we didn't do a good job, we didn't do enough today, and that's disappointing. That is a good baseball team, for sure. They've got as good a record as anybody in baseball right now, but, you know, you know, getting swept is no good. It's a bad take. - Damn! I mean, does that fire anybody up? - It does not. - Again, maybe I'm the maniac that would come in and flip over the food table and start yelling, and that stuff wears thin, and I'm the first to admit it. Immature, meatball, dumb, I get it. Does he ever, ever? Last night, in fact, this whole series, the umpiring both ways was horrific at the plate. - Correct, correct. - Both ways. Last night, I'm watching pitches that are five inches off the wheel. Ha! That's not a strike! - No. - I'm watching pitches down the middle. Ball, those are not balls, those are strikes. I mean, is there any accountability for major league baseball? Again, I don't want robo-on-piers. I've made that clear, but there should be, like, they have in the minors now, a challenge system, and you should have the ability to challenge. And they go, oh, yeah, that one was actually not a strike. I mean, those things should happen, but does Craig ever come out and go, this is ridiculous. You guys are doing a horrible job here and fight for his guys? Never see it. - That's right, Cap. What's needed is some fire in that clubhouse. Somebody that can lead this ball club. I mean, you're 59 and 63. Someone's got to speak up. You know, like a guy like David Ross, right? Almost 365 days ago, got to have someone that can fire up everybody. - They're a really good team. You know, best team in the league. So record wise, I mean, they're really, really good. You know, we got to do some little things a little bit better, try to get runners in from third, less than two outs. Hasn't been our strength here this month. You know, guys are, guys are laying it all out there. It's just a really good team. - It's kind of, you know-- - Yeah, it's disappointing. - Yeah, the one difference is-- - They're a really good team, you know, best team in the league. So record wise, it's disappointing, really good. - You know, we got to do some little things a little bit better just for you today as a runner, Sam. - That's pretty good. - It's the scene from the office of Pam's, like they're in the same picture. - I never saw that show, but I'll take your word for it. - But, Cap, here's the point, here's the point. This is not to make fun of David Ross or Craig Council. What I'm telling you is, is that both guys were in the same situation with this Cubs team. Because I know a year ago, around this time, we were talking about how come the Cubs don't have enough relief pitching to get themselves over the hump. And David Ross, you just stood there and what you would tell me is, if you're David Ross, who would you put out there? Because look at the roster. Same thing with Craig Council, same thing. The criticism is valid, but it's the same scenario. 'Cause Craig Council's like, well, who do you want me to put in there? As far as your bullpen's concerned, a bullpen that's been solid now, but against quality hitting, you see what happened against the Guardian. So, the conversation we had about Ross, in the same conversation we had about Council, why would you put that guy in there? Why would you? 'Cause this is the roster that Jed gave them. - Okay, but Monday night in a tie game, why is Lopez warming up after Maryweather has fortunately navigated to seventh? We gave up a double play ball and 108 mile an hour smash. They got out of it. Why would you run him back out there when Lopez is already warming up? That makes no sense. - I hear you. - If you told me, that's what that dude does. He pitches multi in it, April 5th, that he spent four months on the injured list. - I understood. - So that was just bad managing, bad. - But also, if people can hear what you're saying, Cap, deep down, you're not happy with the roster. - No. - And you shouldn't be, because the way you turn this around is, your bats get hot where you could be carried by like a freakin' Aaron Judge, like what the Yankees and the Sox yesterday, or a Soto, someone that can carry you when you're going through the doldrums. You don't have that. And you don't have a good enough seven to eight to nine to be able to get you out of situations. You just don't. You've been very fortunate to even be in this situation right now, but you just know at the end, it won't be good enough. - Ask Dan's be if it's still June. - It's fair. - I gotta get a text from Sylvie. All it says is, are the Cubs back? That was at 751 last night. And I wrote him back and just said, your Cubs thing. - It's fair. - I got a hahaha. - Hey, Dan's be. What month is it? - It's June. - Still June. - June, right? - What about now? Now you're 5963 up the track. All I know, Cap, is that we'll go through the rest of the season. But if Jed Hoyer, who will return next season, if Jed Hoyer does not make some significant changes to bolster his bullpen seven to eight to ninth, and to find a bat or two, it's gonna be the same situation. It's embarrassing. If I'm a fan of the National League Chicago Ball Club, I would say, how is Small Market Milwaukee doing this with Murphy? How are they doing this? It's like me as a White Sox. How's Cleveland doing this? Small Market Cleveland. It's embarrassing. It's embarrassing. - It's pathetic. - Yeah, it's beyond pathetic. And for me to say it's over, God, I so look forward to the baseball season. It's my favorite season. - Love football. - Yes. - Excited for the Bears, all of it. I enjoy watching the Bulls, even though they stink. I enjoy watching hockey. I'm a sports guy. That's my life. That's what I do every single day. I was watching an Aaron judge at the home run last night to say the Cubs seasons over. Yeah, my reality is, yeah, it's probably done. But throw in the towel and go, we don't play a team. I can always find a way to rationalize in my mind. Dumb, yes, but that's who I am. - Let me just make sure that you understand the 12 minutes into the show this morning. You, Cap, are not allowed to get off the bandwagon. - I'm not getting off. - Now, you know it's done, but you have to ride this thing until the wheels fall off. You have to continue to be on this thing. It is true that the Blue Jays and the Detroit Tigers and the Miami Marlins and Pittsburgh, they're a little bit underwater, a number of those teams. But then my question to you is, well, what are the Cubs going to do about it? - What are you going to do about it? - Yes, it is correct. You mentioned the under 500 teams that the Cubs are facing, but what do you think the Cubs are? Also an under 500 team, also under-achieving. Or maybe that's who they're supposed to be. I don't know. I guess at the end of the season, we're going to find out, is this who they're supposed to be? I didn't think so, 'cause I thought that Jed would push his chips in the middle of the table to be able to be a playoff team, a playoff contender. That's what I thought. Like, oh, this is a new season, man. He's going to learn from his mistakes last year. - Oh, he didn't. - No. - The offseason of Bellinger, that's what it was. - And Imanaga. - Imanaga. - And Bush. - Solid moves. Did he have a closer? I've said it a million times. No, he did not. He did not have a closer. He entered the second straight year without a closer. And don't tell me how's the lie is, 'cause he's not, now he's gone with Tommy Chen. You get the Blue Jays for three. You get the Tigers for three. You get the Marlins for three. You get the Pirates for three. The Nationals for three. The Pirates for three more. And then you get the Yankees here in Chicago. - Listen, you can't thumb your nose down at those teams because the Cubs under achieve two and they're under 500 two. You don't have a right to do a cap. - Yeah, you got 18 consecutive now against lousy teams. - And what are the Cubs? - A lousy team. - Wait a minute now. - You basically have to go 27 and 13 the rest of the way. And everyone in front of US to play 500 are worse baseball. - Right. - I don't even know if the Cubs have a 27 and 13 in them. In fact, I would say they don't. - I love, by the way, my partner here, thumbing his nose down at the opponents of the Cubs have coming up. The next four or five series, they're under 500. - It's the equivalent of you saying, hey, that person, that outfit looks terrible. Super Bowl champion, Cole Rannellis for the Bears, right here on the home of the Bears, ESPN 1000. Tommy will join us coming up at nine o'clock. - So Cap, yesterday afternoon, we found out that Matthew Judon, Matt Judon, is now with the Atlanta Falcons. Happy birthday to Matt Judon. He made a decision and he's now the Atlanta, he's with the Atlanta Falcons as a defensive end. And so one of the things we've talked about a lot is trying to determine if Ryan Polls are trying to find something to kind of raise the stakes and just be a little bit better from a pass rush standpoint. Matthew Judon would have filled the bill, but here's the thing I like. From everything that we read, it was the Falcons, it was another team and it was the Bears in on Matthew Judon, which also tells me that once again, Ryan Polls has the pulse of this thing. And also, Matt, he reflused, told CBS Sportsnet. It's like, "Hey, we're trying to address that right now." They're a pass rush. Remember, he said he didn't say the name. So I just think that that's great that, again, the general manager then says, "Okay, yeah, we're fine." No, he understands that along with Montes, what another veteran would have really been nice with the Bears. So as I did all my homework late last night reading for the show, there was an article talking about why the Patriots chose the offer, the Bears offered, so reportedly offered a third round pick. They said, "We felt that the Falcons third rounder will be higher in the draft than the other ones that were offered." No, that tells me they think the Bears are pretty good. - Sure. - They look at the Bears and go, "Oh, that team's pretty good with Caleb Williams and company and all those receivers and good defense." Yeah, we'll go with Atlanta. We don't think there's good a team. That makes me happy as a Bears fan. Matthew Judon would have been a nice addition. How much you would have had to pay him? I don't know, I'm curious to see what the contract extension looks like because at 31 years old, coming off of, I think he's turned to 32, off of a torn biceps that knocked him out for 15 games last year, that's a risk. And you're using up a ton of your salary cap space that you have, I'd rather get his son Redick. Again, I would have taken Judon, good football player. - Sure. - But if you tell me I'd get his son Redick, if this thing keeps dragging on with the Jets, or last year no one saw Montez sweat being available, make the right decision, not just a decision, the right decision. I like that the general manager Ryan Polls picked up the phone at least to inquire about him. 'Cause it doesn't make us look crazy, Cap. Here's the thing, we're not turning a blind eye to Demarcus Walker because we know that Demarcus Walker is a good player. We know that Austin Booker has been looking pretty good the last couple of games in preseason. He's a rookie, but again, the arrows pointing out for him from everything that we saw in the game and on film. Montez, what is the real guy? The real deal on the left side of that defensive line. But I think it's good, Cap, that at least Polls picked up the phone and said, let's see if we can be able to bolster this part of our defense. It didn't get him, but you know what though? There's no tears today. Yeah, as I was there, you didn't get him. Okay, so what I look at is the Bears can start the season with what they have, and by the time you get to the deadline, you could say, well, who's available, like a trade for? We feel like we're close, but if we only had this, who could be available? We have to find out, but as is, the defense is good, but there's always an opportunity to improve, if not in August, then maybe in October. Right, when the deadline comes, there's always gonna be teams going, oh, I can offload all that money. I could get draft capital. He's got nine picks next year, Polls. He can be aggressive in the right spot. Again, his son, Rhettick is sitting at home. Jamar Chase doesn't have a deal, so they also gotta figure out, I'm talking about the Bengals now, I have to figure out Trey Hendrickson and T Higgins, maybe Hendrickson becomes available. You never know what guy gets moved. You go, whoa, they traded who? Yeah, because they can't pay everybody. Right. So pick your spots, I trust, I ride or die with Polls, that guy's awesome. It took me to the captain just to be in the conversation. I like that. Yep, I agree. More of the Bears coming up, 3, 1, 2, 3, 3, 2, ESPN, 3, 3, 2, 3, 7, 7, 6, are a telephone number. Shout out no shot, that's at eight o'clock right here, on Captain Jay Hood. Follow Chicago's home for sports on Twitch at ESPN 1000 Chicago. Captain Jay Hood are back on Chicago's home for sports. ESPN Chicago. It's a Captain Jay Hood morning show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app on a rainy Thursday. Hope that you're gonna have a great day. As we go to the phone lines and talk to you about the Bears 3, 1, 2, 3, 2, 3, 2, 3, 7, 7, 6, are a phone number. No Matthew Judon cap, but you know what? It's a thumbs up for me. It's okay. You at least you inquire. You picked up the phone to find out. That's what Polls does, man. He does his homework and then he took a shot, I guess they called the Bears back as we're being told. It said, you want 'em, second round pick, you can have 'em. Nope, not doing it. Yeah. So glad he did not give up a second rounder there. Judon's a really good football player. He's gotta prove he can stay healthy after a serious injury last year. That all said, keep swinging. His son, Rhettick, Trey Hendricks, whoever's out there. Here's Lee Allen on, Captain Jay Hood. Lee Allen, good morning. Good morning, gentlemen. How are you doing today? We're awesome, man. How are you? I'm great, man. I'm glad we didn't find Judon. I think Polls has a lot on his side in terms of young developmental players on that defensive line. Yeah, they've got good young developmental, but developmental means you haven't done it yet. And he obviously is interested in adding veteran talent. Iberfluis kind of hinted at it on CBS Sports Network the other day. And yesterday they were very aggressively trying to get Judon. They're not done out there in the market. I would say this based upon what I see from the office and looking like they're gonna win a lot of time of possession and the fact that you have a Tory Taylor and his ability to shift the field, you can afford to have those type of guys out there. Just simply look at what happened with Leonard Floyd. When Leonard Floyd was here his first year, he was okay. We ended up getting Khalil Mack that helped him out a lot more, but we never won time of possession on the offense. When you look at the fact that we're gonna probably win time of time of possession on offense, that we're gonna be scoring a lot more points. Guys like Hardy, guys like Booker and guys like Robinson, their athleticism, their size and their speed, and the fact that they're gonna be in better positions on the field, you're looking at those guys probably being able to be what you need and they're all a lot cheaper. And the other thing to be is, cold has 20 million dollars, cold has 20 million dollars in those guys, though the first guys that should get the meet on that ball and should be the guys on the roster. And I think when you look at time of possession, they're very well suited to have a very, very aggressive front and the depth to sustain during the course of the season. - Yeah, and appreciate the Khalil and have a great day. He's a die hard Bears fan. The key is, does he believe that the young kids can make an impact at the level he needs him to make an impact this year? 'Cause they're trying to win now. This is no more developmental rebuild roster. - No, absolutely not. And polls will tell you, Cap. Polls will tell you, like, look, I can't fill all the holes. I'm doing the best I can. He has done a good job of filling these holes. Of course, you know, me as a bottom line fan, you gotta win. Like, no matter what you do at your roster composition, you gotta be able to win. It's win time now. Three wins, seven wins, the next step is the playoffs. - Correct. - That's where you're supposed to be. I have this, you know, I have this depth chart for the Bears up every morning. - Do you go to Bears.com or ESPN or our lads? Where do you go? - Our buddy, our lads, our lads.com. - Correct. - Austin Booker is behind Demarcus Walker. For weeks now, I've been seeing Booker like third string, but he's deserved. If that's how the Bears have it, I don't know what their official depth chart is. They got Booker second on this list here after Demarcus Walker, right where he belongs. 'Cause for a while, he was third in this category here. - Yeah, and fair enough, he does not deserve to be the starter yet. Played two preseason games and had what? Saved team practices. So he's had a really good run so far. Now he's gotta continue to play well. - And Daniel Hardy is the backup to Montez sweat on this thing too, which is also new. - To just moving some guys around. And by the way, it's based on your preseason performance and your practice habits, right? - Correct. - If that's the official, and our lads more times than not is giving you close to or the official depth chart from camp. Pretty good. - But here's the one thing I would say to you. When you look at that list, yeah, Montez sweat. - Stud. - Yeah. - Demarcus Walker, he's a journeyman. He's solid, he's not a star. I need another big time pass rusher. I do, whether that's in the interior, on the edge, I need another guy that can move the pocket and put a quarterback on his ass. That's what I need. - Javon Dexter and Austin Booker, pal. Hope you're ready. - We'll see, 'cause obviously Paul's was-- - I'm good with it. - Aggressively trying to get Matthew Judon. - Yeah, I'm good with it. - So-- - Because you know, why I shave is because I don't think that that's what we see now we may not see in October. Like there could be some new blood on that defensive line. 'Cause I trust Paul's to be able to identify it. I've said this many times, Shay. Any time that you and I could see something and the general manager jibes with what we see, it's like, oh, so you see that hole too. And actually aggressively go for it. For years, years, ASCAP. For years, a general manager like, I don't know what you're talking about. We like our guys. Well, you might like your guys, but you could love someone else in the scrap heap that could be able to fit into your system. But for years, it would be in denial. Like God, we don't need that. - Remember, we're fine. - Right. - No, Paul's was obviously thinking, I gotta upgrade my defensive line. - Sure. - Or he wouldn't have gone after Judon as aggressively as he did. - Sure. - Now we'll see where he'd go. - At the same time though, you gotta find out if Dexter and Pickens are guys. Are they dogs for you or not? You gotta know that. - Correct. - You can draft these guys like, well, they're not, well, you gotta put them in the mix to find out if they're any good or not. Like we talk so much about sweat and talk about so much about Demarcus Walker. I wanna see Billings that knows tackle. I wanna see Dexter. I wanna see the development of Austin Booker. If Hardy's a guy or if this is just a camp story, I mean, you gotta find out. Gotta be able to rush the passer and be as good as you were toward the tail end of last season. Getting to the quarterback. - Is it a little odd that, like you didn't seem to be aggressively pursuing anything on the defensive line and free agency? Obviously Daniel Hunter, no aggressive thing there. Nothing with Christian Wilkins. Like a lot of those guys who signed didn't seem like the Bears are very interested. Now they're being more aggressive in camp. Does that, is that a little odd to anyone else? - Well, we don't know if that he wasn't aggressive in free agency. He may have been all over somebody. He just didn't get him. We don't know. We're not privy to his phone calls. That's the thing. - And also, - Till Hard Knocks came out, we didn't realize how aggressive he was after Saquon Barkley. - Yeah. And as far as the Bears Hard Knocks cap, you won't know. - Correct. - So far. - So far. - That you, that you, that's it. - So far. - They were dropping swear words. I mean, they had Austin Booker. They dropped his audio when he swore. The Bears very clearly said to HBO, we don't want the swears. - Which is fine. - Baby, that's fine. - They're prerogative. - Yeah. - Well, they get the final cut. So who else do I have to point a finger at? - Hey, man. It's an instantication. It's Malcolm in the middle, followed by Bears Hard Knocks. - It's Hard Knocks. - I'm the Hallmark. - I'm the Hallmark. - Hard Knocks Light. - That's right. - That's exactly right. - Look, bring an ABC family back for this. - The fact that I'm watching Hard Knocks, and I watched it again yesterday, and I didn't go to, I was flipping, and I'm like, - You watched it twice? - I did. Like, oh, Hard Knocks is on. - You want to more of the hot dog? - I could barely sit through it once. - Yeah, I enjoyed it. And I'm like, wait a minute, Hard Knocks is on. I'm in, let's go. And I'm watching this. And as I'm watching, I'm like, how freaking cool is it that that's our team? - Oh, yeah. We've always been the all so ran. That was super cool. And shadow no shot. - It's the all shot. - Light, in two minutes on Captain Jaywood.
