Come on up, I'm going to talk about the future of talk shows on streaming plus also about the new FX series The Old Man, but before we get any further make sure you do hit that subscribe button to keep up with the latest Disney+ news. Hi it's Roger here, phone what's on at DisneyPlus.com, it's time for a quick Disney+ news roundup. Let's start off with talking about late night talk shows, so this has been a staple of mainstream American TV for decades, we've seen so many different people hosting shows and Jimmy Kimmel is the one that ABC puts out, he's been there for over 20 years, he's currently under contract until 2026, however he thinks this one's coming to an end and he probably might not be continuing with it. But also recently while he did a guest spot on the Politican podcast, he explained how he just doesn't think there's going to be a late night show in the future, he says, "I don't know if there will be any late night television shows on network TV in 10 years, maybe there'll be one, but there won't be a lot of them, there's a lot to watch and now people can watch anything at any time, they've got all these streaming services, it used to be Johnny Carson was the only thing on at 1130, and then David Letterman was on after Johnny, so people watched those two shows but now there are so many options, maybe more specifically the fact that people can easily be able to watch your monologue online the next day, it really cancels that they need to watch it when it's on the air and once people stop watching, when it's on the air networks they're going to stop paying for them for them to be made. Now I have been a big fan of American sort of talk shows for years, but it always should be a kind of weird thing I used to have to end up watching like Jay Leno and stuff and Colonel O'Brien on CNBC on the weekends, Belong came YouTube and now I can catch up on all the monologues and the following morning, it's something I like to do, you know like this morning I watched one with John Stewart from last night and also like you know it wasn't Jimmy Kimmel it was actually Jeff Goldblum last night, but I like catching up on these ones but generally I only really like to watch the monologue, I don't really care for the generic interviews with some you know, insert actor or actress or you know singer just plug in their latest products, I don't really need any more of that, the monologue is the bet that I like. And so I've definitely shifted to just watching it all on YouTube the following day and I think we're definitely seeing a shift in that, we're definitely sort of like with James Cordon's show that he turned of leaned in on trying to make social moments but he's kind of you know he stepped away from it and they've ended up being replaced with was it a midnight like game show that's just you know not really in the same vague, we've seen loads of other costs coming in like Seth Meyers is going to be losing his band and the big problem as well is viewership has just continued to decline and decline and decline on network television because people are not tuning in in the same way and we're streaming, again these kind of TV shows daily they kind of with that thing of like when there was nothing else on they were able to command that audience but now you get a boring interview, next you just move on to the next thing, you're not interested in you'll find something else to watch or fast forward or and I don't think they've adapted to being able to work within a streaming network. Now here in the UK, so she always has been a little bit different because they've never been able to replicate the same system that they had in the US so we generally would only have like one chat show on the weekend, Graham Norm's generally or we had Alan Carr chatty man or even Jonathan Ross but we would only get one a week and they're kind of was able to keep that sort of zone of making people watch because it was only once a week, I think with the American ones with their being multiple ones a week, multiple different people and they're all kind of making the similar jokes you know the same guests are popping up on everything, there's only so much of that you can watch and to be honest you know if you've got a new celebrity I'd rather watch them on Hot Ones you know that's more fun than just sort of sitting there with an interview kind of just going through the tick list of all the generic answers and stuff that they're going to give. I don't think we're going to see the same amount of live talk shows and stuff in the same way, I don't know if it can exist on streaming because I think YouTube has kind of filled in that void you know you've got so many of us kind of making content and stuff talking heads that you know in your interviews and podcasts and so on they've all replaced I think the need for the talk show and I think we are going to see them as they come up for their renewals you know they might be offered less money and also they host themselves you know are they just going to roll through it I think I do think Jimmy Kimmel will probably come to the end of it and be like look I've done it it's working and whether or not also Disney wants to keep paying out for these shows they're under a contract for a couple more years I think that will still happen and obviously you can watch those episodes the next day on Disney Plus or on Hulu in the US they don't make them internationally available which is a shame I think that's something that they could do but also these kind of shows just naturally just don't work the same way as they used to you know the habits have changed and I think that format is just something that just does not work on streaming services it does have a place on YouTube and I think Disney and someone could lean in on making more kind of content but the trouble is again whenever they try to do stuff it loses that authenticity of where you know if you've got an interview or someone just putting their game with their own thing disconnected from a big corporation you know whenever Disney makes like an official podcast or talk show it's always so generic and bland that people don't tend to watch it you know people want you know something a little bit more exciting and I think that's the key thing in the audience is just keeps dropping off yeah and I think that's just going to continue to happen but let me know what you think do you think there's going to be a future I mean I'm not being funny but even in 10 years time where there still even be those 10 networks since cable is going to be gone we'll just be down to a few main channels in the US will they even exist who knows a lot of big changes but yeah I definitely think there's going to be I don't think Jimmy Kimmel will be doing it for much longer but let me know your thoughts on this love to hear that in the comments below shifting gears now let's now talk about the second season of FX the old man a brand new trailer was released for the second season which drops on to the FX channel on the 12th of September next day on Hulu and Hulu Disney Plus in the US series is also coming to Disney Plus around the world but they've not officially confirmed the date whether or not they're going to hold it back I hope not because I really want to watch this show at the same time as the Americans because I love the first season and the trailer I fought for the second season was even better because now at this point sort of Jeff's daughter's been kidnapped and he's basically going to go full on Liam Neeson he's going to go back in and rescue her and yeah there's looks to be like lots of violence in there lots of like it just looks like you know two old men just kicking butt and it just I just really appeals to me I think this was definitely going to be I think the hit for the summer sort of end of the summer beginning of the fall I think this one's going to be a real big hit the trailer I thought just looks fantastic if you've not checked out the first season as I said you can watch on Hulu and Hulu and on Disney Plus in the US and on Disney Plus around the world but for me the old man season two this is one show I can't wait to watch what the trailer did a fantastic job I've said it looks even more action-packed than the first season but looking forward to it let me know what you thought of the trailer for the second season of old man in the comments below in our questions today which comes from Brandon who says hi Roger just a random question but for say for someone who has Disney Plus outside of the US I live in Australia so let's say I was hypothetically if I was to unsubscribe to Disney Plus right now would it make a difference at all like for me I only watched the Disney animation I'll pick some movies occasionally I usually see a lot of new releases and cinemas like inside out on Moana the only major new releases on the platform right now are coming up by Agatha all along and skeleton crew so I definitely think you know there's a thing I've liked with Disney Plus I and I would definitely say like if you're in the US I could see why you might not be subscribed for the next month until Agatha comes along and maybe if you're not into Marvel there might not be a lot of stuff I feel now especially in the US I would flip it the other way around where for me I'd be like I'm subscribed to Hulu and then I get Disney Plus as the add-on and that's where that would be the way I would look at it depends how again how many people are watching Disney Plus as me so I think as far as obviously if you unsubscribe you know obviously it does impact Disney's line but in the grand scheme of things it's not going to mean anything the main thing is do you want to save money and that's the kind of the key thing do you further anything on there could you maybe unsubscribe for a few months come back in a few months time then you know you could binge all of Agatha and then you've got skeleton crew no reason why you couldn't do that now I would say the counter algorithm today is Disney has recently put out its plan for the autumn for here in the UK and I'm getting shows you know obviously we've got like Futurama we've got only murders in the building we're going to be getting Grey's Anatomy, a high potential album entry, the new Dr Odyssey 911 so suddenly now for me it's like actually there is multiple shows that I'm going to be watching so therefore it's not just all about the Agatha and skeleton crew those are the what I would call the main tempo releases for Disney Plus but in all honesty it's the staff stuff that's really the kind of thing that the daily stuff you know things like the old man those are the shows that I really want to watch we've also got rivals coming up as well at some point so those are the kind of stuff for me but I think that's going to come down to everyone has their own individual thing of why are you subscribed if you're looking at the list of the stuff that's coming out over the next few months ago I don't really like the look of any of that I don't want to watch it then unsubscribe come back later go try Apple TV there's loads of great shows there I am good I like Apple TV I think there's a lot of great shows on there definitely a lot a lot enjoy a lot of them but I'm not subscribed everything I'm not subscribed right now to Amazon even though there's a few shows I do want to catch up on I want to catch up on the latest season of the boys and Clarkson's farm and a few other movies and stuff I want to watch that new Jackpot movie with John Cena so there is some things in there and I could maybe jump in maybe for a month or so and kind of jump in there or the same thing with now I want to get like now so I can maybe watch the latest season of the Game of Thrones but I haven't got it in there so there's a few that I just don't have because again you do get to that point of going how many subscriptions can I have at once how many am I realistically able to watch and I think everyone has to do their own math and work out you know watch right for your family for those that are using it if you're not using it enough and subscribe come back later use that money you know if you've got the other option as well you know the I've started doing this as well of shifting over to the ad supported tier because you could then in theory then get you know Disney Plus of ads and then you can get Netflix with ads and then you may get Amazon with ads and suddenly then you can have maybe three or four platforms for the same price as one or two without ads again it's time versus money and that's going to be the key thing but yeah don't feel you know with Disney Plus you do you can unsubscribe resubscribe as much as like that's the benefit of streaming well they still do it I wouldn't be surprised eventually that might disappear but that's one of the major advantages of streaming but I'd love to know your thoughts on all this let me know if you've got any questions as well on the best one I will pick out for tomorrow's video anyway guys thank you very much for watching or listening and I shall see you guys soon later [ Silence ]
