You're listening to the Mo News podcast. I'm Ochuanunu. This is the place where we bring you just the facts and we read all the news and read between the lines so you don't have to. I'm going to wish all of you who are left-handed a happy international left-handers day. Turns out this holiday has been around for about 50 years celebrating all the left-handed among us. Now I am a righty. Like about 90% of society, they've done studies on this. And they have found that about 10 to 12% about their in our left-handers. So much love to all the lefties out there. My mom, Debbie, is one of them. So I know more and more in recent years, they're making left-handed everything these days, especially when it comes to sports. But still, I know you guys don't always get the love and respect that you deserve. You are equal to right-handers, and special shout out to all the Ami Dextrous among you. Major respect for those of you who can use both your right and your left equally. But I digress here, as you probably can tell by now, I'm solo this week. Jill is on vacation. She'll be back at the end of this week. I hope everyone has had a great start to the week. We're in the midst of a move right now. We're moving apartments in New York City, leaving Brooklyn today. I'll tell you more about the move later this week. But I appreciate all of you rolling with me on Instagram as I try to manage both the move and the daily news flow. With that, let's get to today's headlines. We're monitoring developments in the Middle East that says Israel and the U.S. are on high alert for a potential attack from Iran. It could come as soon as today. It could also come weeks from now. They just don't seem to know yet, but we'll tell you what we do know as of today. We're also getting new details on the Iranian hat of the Trump campaign, and we're now learning that Iran also tried to hack the Biden-Harris campaign as well. Some bad news for U.S. gymnast, Jordan Chiles, and her attempt to keep her bronze medal from the Summer Games will tell you the latest in that saga. We're also tracking developments overseas in Russia, where Ukraine appears to have taken over even more territory inside Russia. We'll tell you what Putin is saying in a response. Back here at home, there's just about 85 days to go before the presidential election. Former President Trump is very upset about Kamala Harris' proud sizes and the media coverage he is getting. He's now accusing her of using AI, artificial intelligence, to create fake pictures of her rallies. Staying with politics, a major setback for Robert F. Candy Jr. and his attempt to run as a third-party candidate, he's having some trouble with a few states right now. We're also tracking a tropical storm in the Caribbean as hurricanes season heats up, and Burning Man is not as cool as it used to be. Less than two weeks out, you can still get tickets for the Burning Man Festival. They used to sell out in a matter of hours. Now they're available for months on end. We'll tell you how you can get some Burning Man tickets if that's what you want to do in a couple weeks. And we end as always with On This Day in History. But let's begin here with the Middle East. Israel has put its military in high alert, and here in the U.S., the Pentagon says it's sending a guided missile submarine to the region, and speeding up the arrival of a second aircraft carrier. It comes amid heightened tensions right now about a possible Iranian and Hezbollah response to the killing of top terror leaders in Iran and Lebanon in recent weeks. Israel set the high alert level for its military for the first time this month after observing preparations by both Iran and Hezbollah about to carry out attacks. Now Israel and the U.S. say they don't know whether the attacks could come within hours or days or weeks, but are proceeding cautiously here. The Iranians are trying to keep the Israelis as well as the Americans on their toes. Same time the Iranians are trying to figure out what their response should be, because at the end of the day, they feel obligated to respond to the assassinations of top terror leaders, but they don't want an all-out war. So what is the revenge that they can take out on Israel here without it unfolding into a larger regional war? Right now the U.S. has been sharing intelligence. It has gathered about shifting Iranian force postures. They're keeping a very close relationship with the Israelis here. But at the same time, U.S. officials say that identifying the moving of military assets doesn't provide enough information right now about the timing of a potential attack. The U.S. and four key European allies called on Iran in the last day to stand down on a military attack. That is the U.S., the U.K., Germany, France, and Italy. All telling Iran, "There is no need to take out a revenge here. Let's pull tensions in the region." The U.S. warning Iran directly and through intermediaries that it could suffer a devastating blow if it were to mount a major attack against Israel. Now you might recall back in April, we saw a similar situation unfold after Israel took out top Iranian commanders in Syria in Iranian diplomatic compound. Iran felt obligated to respond, set more than 300 missiles in drones, 99% of which were shot down by the Israelis and other allies across the region, including the U.S. and the U.K. So now take two. The Israelis reportedly have killed the leader of Hamas in Tehran. We told you about it a couple of weeks ago. Iran says, "We can't let this stand by. We must respond here." They're just figuring out how to respond right now. So in the last day, the U.S. has sent another destroyer into the region and gradually making its way into the Eastern Mediterranean and moved up from the Red Sea through the Suez Canal. That comes as there's a number of destroyers in U.S. military craft right now in the region, the U.S.S. Roosevelt, the USS Balkili, the U.S.S. wasp, the USS Oak Hill, the U.S.S. New York. It's crowded right now. But the Americans are bringing more vessels into the region, basically trying to show Iran. It is not worthwhile for you to mess around here. The Pentagon also ordering the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to move more quickly into the Middle East right now. They're near China. It's going to take about two weeks for them to move into the region to join the rest of the naval ships there. But again, the idea here is the announcement itself should serve as a deterrent here for Iran. The Iranian top officials have told a number of countries that they will be doing something. It's a question of what is it and when? I mentioned the high-profile killings in the capitals of Lebanon and Iran in recent weeks. The Israelis taking out atop his beloved terror commander in Beirut and then taking out the leader of Hamas while he was attending the Iranian presidential inauguration in Iran. A huge embarrassment for the Iranians. So again, they feel the need to respond here. A reminder that Iran's new president, Masoud Pizeshkin, ran as a reformist. He was indicating in recent months that he wants to re-engage with the West. But as we told you here on this podcast on the Instagram feed in the newsletter, ultimately, he answers to the supreme leader, the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. And ultimately, the Ayatollah makes decisions when it comes to national security or major issues like that. And so while Pizeshkin is officially president, he is deferential to an Ayatollah who's increasingly aggressive when it comes to his posture in the region. We'll continue to do the modern developments there over the next days, weeks, months. This is the podcast, you know, we follow the situation and we'll keep you updated with the latest on this podcast and 24/7 over on our Instagram account. Alright, staying with the Middle East here and Iran, a follow up to the hack we told you about yesterday. This reportedly by the Iranian government getting into private Trump campaign files and then leaking them to media outlets. We learned yesterday that the FBI is now investigating the suspected hack into the Trump campaign and the newest developments. Apparently, the Iranians also tried to hack the Biden campaign a couple of months ago. It comes as we're just over 80 days before an election. The FBI has now opened a full on investigation here. In the last day, we learned that three staffers for the then Biden Harris presidential campaign received what's called spearfishing emails that were designed to appear legitimate but could give an intruder access into the recipients communications. Now, so far, it does not appear that those attempts were successful into the Biden campaign, but they were successful into the Trump campaign, as we told you about yesterday. The FBI began this investigation back in June, suspecting that Iran was behind all of this. Now, notably, after the Trump campaign realized it was hacked, it never alerted the FBI. There's a lot of suspicion there. We've covered this. Trump does not trust the FBI, and so they didn't alert US law enforcement about what's going on, but US law enforcement still heard about it and has been tracking this whole issue. The new details show that the investigation is much broader, involves many more victims than we thought. And it also underscores the degree to which hacking by foreign nations targeting US political candidates has become really commonplace here in the digital age. This really went to a new level back in 2016 when the Russian government hacked Democratic emails, including those of the Hillary Clinton campaign at the time and leaked them. Now, it appears everyone is trying to get in on the act. The Russians, the Chinese, the Iranians, and while some of those governments might prefer one or the other candidate wins the election, bottom line is they just want to soak chaos. They just want to create issues, divisiveness and increased conflict here in America. And that appears to be the Iranian goal here, as they both tried to hack the Biden campaign and the Trump campaign successful only so far in hacking the Trump campaign and revealing some of those documents. Eventually to the media, we still don't know everything Iran was able to access within the Trump campaign. So far, several media outlets were contacted by an anonymous official who they think was linked to Iran with a document on JD Vance, the vetting document the campaign used to try to get a sense of his pluses and minuses and issues in the past. Well, that was on a private drive of the Trump campaign, the Iranians got in, they got access to the file, and then leaked it to the media, so we'll continue to monitor this very concerning situation. All right, if you were like me and you were testing yourself during the Olympics, hearing the announcements in French and trying to figure out what they were saying, I took French back in high school and college, but it's been a while since I took it formally. I was reminded that it might be time to take a language course again, and that apparently puts me based on the latest numbers in the 20% of Americans who have learned a new language on their bucket list. So if that's you as well, you can make this year the year you finally check that off the list with Babel. Babel, B-A-B-B-E-L, is a language app that has quick 10-minute lessons to help you start to speak a new language in as little as three weeks. Apparently one study found that using Babel for 15 hours is equivalent to a full semester in college, how about that? So what we like about Babel is that it's designed for real people, for real conversations, they have tips and tools that are approachable, accessible, rooted in real life situations, delivered with conversation-based teaching, so you're ready to practice it right away. I have found their courses very convenient as I've had to travel over the last year. I try to run through a couple as I make my way to a new country. I tried it for my recent trips to Ethiopia and Israel in recent months. So we have a special limited time deal for our listeners here in the Monuse community. You can get 60% off your Babel subscription. That's it, babble.com/monews, B-A-B-B-E-L.com/monews, that it again is 60% off over at babble.com/monews, B-A-B-B-E-L.com/monews, rules and restrictions, do apply. Alright, now time for the speed read. We begin with this from ABC News. The Paris Olympics may be over, but there's still a debate about at least one of the medals, and it appears to be changing hands again. The court of arbitration for sport will now not hear US gymnast Jordan Childs' appeal to keep her bronze medal from the game's despite new evidence USA Gymnastics has submitted. As we told you yesterday, Childs initially finished in fifth place in the individual floor exercise at last week's Olympic Games, only to then be moved up to the third place bronze medal spot when her coaches at the time appealed the scoring of one of the elements in her routine. The judges acknowledged at the time that they had incorrectly downgraded her score. They upgraded her score by 0.1, which jumped her from 13.66 to 13.766, having her pass over to Romanians at the time. The judges said are bad here are the points. Well, the decision to award Childs the Bronze medal came as the Romanians were celebrating their medal. Romanians Anna Barbosu left in tears. The coaches then appealed the appeal and said, "Hey, the Americans took too long to submit this appeal. They took 64 seconds, and the rules say you have to submit the appeal in 60 seconds." The US says, "No, no. We actually submitted it in 47 seconds. One of the issues here, as we explained yesterday, there's no clock and there are no official rules as to what is submitted. Is it signing the document? Is it handing it over to the judges? That's unclear. This is not like basketball or football or baseball with the various clocks that they have. This clock is really in the eyes of the judges. Again, the Romanians counted 64 seconds. The Americans counted 47 seconds. Nonetheless, the International Gymnastics Federation has awarded the Romanian the Bronze medal here. The Court of Arbitration for Sport has voided the appeal, despite the judges saying they got it wrong. They believe the US took four seconds too many to file the appeal. In accordance here, they will reallocate the bronze medal to Romanian Anna Barbosu. They're in touch with the Olympics right now to give her the bronze medal. Unclear how this works logistically and whether Jordan Charles will give up her medal, whether they'll make another medal here. We'll keep you up to date. All right, this now from the Associated Press, we continue to track now the Ukrainian invasion of Russia that we've been telling you about. Ukraine's top military commander now says that his forces control 1000 square kilometers, about 400 square miles of Russia's neighboring Kursk region. Now, that's three to four times as much territory as we told you about yesterday. This for the first time is the Ukrainian military acknowledging how much progress they've made in their lightning incursion into Russia and the fact that the Russians were caught very flat-footed here. Ukraine says they're fulfilling their tasks, fighting continues, and the situation is under control. Russian forces have been scrambling for a week now when the surprise Ukrainian attack happened and there has been a lot of fierce fighting. Nearly 200,000 Russian civilians have had to flee the region. Russia's president Vladimir Putin says he will stop Ukraine and he has no plans to move any Russian troops out of Ukrainian territory. That was seen as a hope here with Ukraine going into Russia is that Russia would have to pull back some of its troops inside Ukrainian territory, thereby loosening the battle lines along Ukraine to take back some of its own country here. But Putin says full steam ahead, he's not stopping anything here. He says he will defeat Ukraine inside Russia. Still the advance here delivers a major blow to Putin's efforts to pretend that life is completely normal in Russia for two and a half years now, largely unaffected by the war. A state propaganda in Russia has been trying to play down the attack, emphasizing how much the Russian government is helping residents of the region, trying to distract attention from the military's failure to prepare for the attack and quickly repel it here. As we noted in the newsletter and the podcast yesterday, right now Ukraine has a number of strategies. They could just have tried to embarrass the Russians here, they're trying to open up the battle lines, or they might in fact be trying to take Russian territory. And that's territory they could use in a land swap if a ceasefire deal or peace talks end up starting. That said, holding this territory might be very difficult for Ukraine here and they might have to retreat because they start losing a lot of forces inside Russia. That's less forces they have inside Ukraine to take back their own country. All right, the next story comes to us from Fox News Detroit. We've been telling you that former President Trump is very upset and very frustrated of late with reports about Kamala Harris's crowd sizes, the amount of energy she's seeing at her campaign events. And so this weekend he had a new argument. He claimed without any evidence over the weekend that Harris has used artificial intelligence AI to doctor and create images of a rally to show a large crowd in Detroit. He posted on his social networking site, True Social, she Aided and showed a massive crowd of so called followers, but all caps, but they didn't exist. So there's one image going around that shows her coming off of Air Force 2 and a whole crowd on the ground, but none of them are seen in the reflection on the plane. Now this appears to have been because it was at night and the way the lights were focused on the plane, because if you look at video and we've posted the center Instagram account, it is very clear that there were thousands of people outside the plane. That said, there's an image going on Twitter among right wingers saying there were no people there. And she made up the image despite, of course, that there is video for hours on end showing the rally crowd at that hangar in Detroit. Trump is really hung up here on this. He's very upset. We told you about his press conference last week where he went on for a while about crowd sizes. Here's a clip. I have 10 times, 20 times, 30 times the crowd size. And no, they never say the crowd was big. That's why I'm always saying turn around the cameras in history for any country. Nobody's had crowds like I have. And you know that. And when she gets a thousand people and everybody starts jumping, you know that if I had a thousand people would say, people would say, that's the end of his campaign. So this event he's hung up on an estimated 15,000 people showed up at the rally. It was the first visit by Harris and walls in Michigan. So that's why there was so much energy in the crowd here. But Trump has struggled here to pivot to Harris. He's frustrated that he has to take her on. He feels he defeated Biden already. And he's annoyed that he has to take on a new candidate here at the same time. You have a lot of Republican strategists who are very frustrated right now with Donald Trump saying that this is his campaign to lose. This is his election to lose here. And all he has to do is focus on the issues. Is painter as a liberal. They have a variety of arguments that they feel will resonate with Americans. But he's getting distracted of late and really focused on crowd size for some reason in the last few days. All right. Now this from the New York Times, a major blow to the Robert F. Kennedy junior presidential campaign that's already been losing ground. He hasn't campaigned much in recent months. It's literally a handful of events that we can count in recent months. His polling has dropped by more than half in a number of polls. He was up at 10%. Now he's down in three or 4% territory. And then the latest here from New York, a judge rules that his petition to get on New York's ballot was invalid because he had used a sham address to maintain New York residency. The ruling, if it stands, not only would kick off Kennedy from the New York ballot, but he apparently has been using this New York address to get on ballots in a number of states across the country. So right now he has a couple of days here to appeal the decision. I imagine he will. But the ruling makes clear that, quote, "Kennedy lied about his residency and provided a false address on his filing papers in New York, intentionally misleading election officials and betraying voters' trust." The decision came from a state Supreme Court judge. It could lead, as I said, to other challenges across the country because for some reason he was using this address, even though he's lived in California, for more than a decade now with his actress, wife, sheriff. But he maintains that he maintained a residence in New York at a friend's place. But even she admitted in testimony last week, we talked about this on the premium account on Instagram over the weekend, that there was no written agreement that he had never paid rent until this year. In fact, he sent a lump sum payment the day after the New York Post inquired about whether he really lived in New York recently. Apparently he had no furniture in the house. He decided he was going to pay $500 a month and, again, paid her an lump sum payment on the blue earlier this year. So his polling is down. He's not really campaigning. And now he's got some ballot issues. We will continue to track RFK Jr.'s campaign here. But it did look like, and we've talked about this on the pod back in April or May, that he could make a major run here. And by major, I mean, the most significant third party run in several decades, like a Ross Pro level. Ross Pro got between 15 and 20% in 1992 and 1996, but RFK right now hanging out at about 3% in the polls. And that's if he's even on the ballot in most of the states. All right, a tropical system we're tracking via Fox weather. We're nearing the peak right now of the Atlantic hurricane season. And right on schedule, the tropics are becoming more active with the formation of tropical storm Ernesto. That storm is slowly becoming organized east of the leeward islands. The tropics have become more active over the past few weeks. We told you about Hurricane Debbie that made landfall in Florida. And then again in South Carolina as a tropical storm, many of you experienced Debbie across the eastern seaboard. So now we have tropical storm Ernesto. Power outages as well as up to a foot of rain, life-threatening surf, and rip current conditions are also possible. But then it appears right now Ernesto is going to make a turn northward towards Bermuda. Unclear whether it'll pass by Bermuda or pass over Bermuda. Bermuda is certainly going to be tracking Ernesto very closely. But right now it's not expected to come into contact with the US mainland as of right now. Keep in mind hurricane season runs through November, a peak of hurricane season typically mid-September. So we're gradually getting there. So be sure if you live in the southeast or the eastern seaboard to be checking in on the tropics every couple days here. And finally this from the San Francisco Chronicle. If you don't have any plans next weekend, you might want to check out Burning Man. For the first time in recent memory, the festival out there in the desert has yet to sell out with just days to go until the festival starts. Typically previous editions of Burning Man sold out in just about 30 minutes when tickets went on sale. And now we're months in with just a couple days to go until the festival starts. And yet they have not sold out their 73,000 tickets. This is the event that takes place out in the black rock desert of Nevada. The original tickets went on sale back in April. And many are attributing the slow sales right now to what happened last year. Which was that many people were stranded in a muddy Burning Man. It's out in the desert and it's so dry that just a little bit of rain. Great of these mud conditions. People stuck out there. It got a lot of bad press. And so I think people don't want to return at least not this year. So Burning Man has launched what it's calling the OMG sale allowing a number of people to buy tickets who didn't pre-register for tickets. This is unprecedented here for Burning Man. We just checked out the website ourselves as we record the podcast tickets right now available for $575. If you want to head out there, you got to be in costume. You got to find a tent community. It's a whole thing. So Burning Man tickets available everybody, despite what happened last year or because of what happened last year. So be sure to potentially check that out. Organizers warning this year. Make sure to bring shoes. They note that a number of people walk around barefoot in the desert. And because of the chemical reaction, the alkaline soil of the dried lake where Burning Man happens, it could potentially burn your skin if you walk around barefoot. So a heads up if you go out there, wear shoes. Alright, now time for On This Day in History. We begin in New York City back in 1907. The first meter taxi cab hit the streets of New York thanks to a guy named Henry Allen who was very upset because he had been charged $5 for going less than a mile. By the way, $5 back in 1907 was worth $127 in today's money. So after being charged $127 in today's money for a one mile ride, he wanted to start a taxi cab service that would charge only so much per mile. He hated the arbitrariness of the existing system. So he imported a whole bunch of gas powered cars from France at the time. They were all painted red and green. He eventually repaints them though yellow. So they're more visible from a distance. And by 1908, just the following year, the company was running 700 taxi cabs around New York City. Alright, On This Day in 1918, the first woman enlisted in the U.S. Marines. After joining the Marine Corps, OFA Maine Johnson was assigned desk duty at a Marine headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. On This Day in 1942, the Soviet premier, Joseph Stalin, draft some memo to Winston Churchill and FDR saying, "Hey guys, I need you to invade Western Europe. I'm dealing with a lot of issues with the Nazis right now." He was frustrated by the fact that the Americans and the Brits there led by Churchill and Roosevelt had decided to start their invasion through North Africa and go up through Europe. The Russians were losing hundreds of thousands of soldiers. They would lose millions of soldiers in the war and they really wanted the Allies to take on the Nazis in Western Europe. It would be almost two more years until the summer of '44 before D-Day was to happen. Alright, we end here with a bit of music and entertainment history on This Day in 1952, 72 years ago. You ain't nothing but a hound dog was recorded for the first time, but if you just heard that, that was not Elvis Presley. In fact, the song was recorded, but for the first time, by Willie Mae Big Mama Thornton in LA, it would be four more years before Elvis Presley would record his version of Hound Dog, which would become much more famous running the top of the Billboard charts for nearly three months. So it's often been assumed that he was the creator of it. No, it was Big Mama Thornton, and then there was another version of Hound Dog by a group called Freddy Bell and the Bell Boys. That's the version that Presley hears and does his version of, I think Jill and I were talking just last week about all the various versions of songs and movies out there. And so, on This Day 72 years ago, Big Mama Thornton gave us, "You ain't nothing but a hound dog." And finally, turning 27 years old today. South Park premiered on Comedy Central on This Day in 1997, so going on nearly three decades here. In fact, MTV Entertainment Studios recently expanded their deal with the co-creator's Trey Parker and Matt Stone to renew the show through 2027 to ensure South Park goes 30 years here.
