As always, I'm one of the hosts of this show, Michael Ritter. You can find me on X, Michael V Ritter where I have been, you know, doing my thing. I'm just hanging out, huh? Just feuding with NFL stars, huh? Gerald McCoy, well, I started with Gerald McCoy, and obviously once you feud with one NFL player, then their fan base likes to follow. So yeah, you get attacked a little bit. With Bucks fans who are doing what they can to cope with the signings. No, it's not all Bucks fans, obviously. Pewter Pirate and myself, we have a mutual respect for each other's fandom and, you know, what, I guess, what our teams do bring to the table, because obviously I feel like over the years kind of traded punches with the Buccaneers. Their roster has been better over the past, you know, better part of a decade, you know, closer to 10 years than not. So, you know, I do give credit where it's due, but, you know, obviously it's weird feuding with some of my former college idols, you know? Like I have Gerald McCoy's autograph on an OU poster, which isn't the first time that I've feuded with him, to be completely honest with you. Or NFL star at that. Yes, it's usually always divisional rivals, because if it's not, then you just, you know, you've got a problem. If you're just feuding with random NFL players, but... Or if you're beefing with your own team. Nonetheless, you know, obviously I'm an OU fan. Gerald McCoy was a sooner great number three overall pick, I think, in 2010. And yeah, it was just a... I guess wrong place, wrong time. He was trying to take shots at the Falcons for their recent moves, which, you know, we'll talk about here in just a little bit. But I had to remind him, you know, he also made a stop at the Carolina Panthers after the buck, so his, you know, historic career as a Buccaneers was kind of... I don't want to say tainted, but when you go play for a division rival, trust me. As someone who watched Julio Jones go play for the Buccaneers, I can very much say like, it does do a little damage to the way that they remembered. But no, the less... Yeah, that's just like James Harrison going to the Patriots after... Oh, yeah, that was... And they're not even division rivals, but it's still just, you know... The Steelers are different, you know. The Steelers with their feud that they had going on with the Patriots at the time, going from the Steelers to the Patriots, it's just the same as, you know, a division rival. In division, yeah. Same thing, you know, whenever Reggie Wayne went to the New England Patriots for, I think, just a training camp, you could do it. Could not do it. But joining me here on this episode, my homo co-hosting of the game, Young Terrence Minifil. Yo, yo, yo. So, Terry, how are we doing? Man, I am doing great, actually a little tired today. Long day. Long, long day. Had a long day yesterday as well. But, you know, we're here, ready to get after it, and we've got a fun little activity for you guys. Oh, yeah. We were excited to continue our draft of the decades that we did a couple of weeks ago. Terry and I have both been kind of in cahoots. We both went on trips this past weekend. We planned on recording before that, but Judy called, which it's the off season. That kind of thing happens. And we literally were supposed to record yesterday. We were over here. We were doing our prep. As soon as we were about to press record, my computer decided to-- Technical difficulties. Crap out. Story of our lives. We gave it legitimately about 40 minutes to try to get it, you know, to get it solved, to get it situated. But obviously, Terry and I both have lives that we had to get to. We couldn't just spend the entire evening here looking at this computer frozen. As much as we would love to. So luckily, I was able to get it situated after Terry already left. A couple. I mean, it took probably like, of course, like a good hour after you left. So we would have been here for a while waiting for that bad boy to actually start working. It's always something though. Exactly. It's always something. But I'm kind of glad that we were delayed just one more day. I wonder why. Because there's a lot of things that have been happening, you know, around the NFL. It's been falling through. For whatever reason, it's a busy season, I guess. Free agency ends in April and, you know, the end of May. Once you get to training camp, teams like to have their team. They like to try to get, you know, get an idea for what their roster is going to look like. So the fact that we're, you know, a week and a half, two weeks in a training camp and we bring in Pro Bowl caliber players in areas of need. It's huge. Let's just kind of chalk it up. We'll go one at a time. Let's go to the one that happened first. Obviously, this one is connected to you. Yes. The Atlanta Falcons, each in agreement with the New England Patriots to send a 2025 third round pick to the Patriots in exchange for outside linebacker, Matt Giudon. That's what hurts me the most, man. It's just a third rounder. This is our best defensive player by far. And that's what we get for them. And then I get it. I get the business aspect of it. And I get, you know, age and deterioration and, you know, all that shit. But this is literally a guy who took command of games for us. This is a guy who single handedly helped us in a, you know, a time where we've looked our worst, you know, he was a shining, shining armor in the, in the shit hole of our defense. I mean, I can't even tell you something I told Caleb whenever the move happened. I can't tell you how many times obviously the show isn't on YouTube yet. Yeah. But so the listeners can't see it, but I can't tell you how many times over the past three years on this show, when we're talking about Matt Giudon that Terry does his signature sack celebration, he's doing it literally right now. He would do it in the studio time and time again. And it's just crazy how things kind of shake up. Obviously, you know, if you're a listener of the show, if you're a regular listener of the show, you know, how deprived the Falcons organization has been. So it's so bittersweet. It's so bittersweet because of that reason. We have needed a player like Giudon for so long. Like, look, he's coming off of a four sack season, but he only played in four games last year. So if you're, you know, going to nitpick and, I guess, criticize the move for any reason, I feel like it should be the fact that he's 32 coming off of a season ending injury, rather than his statistics, because he's still one of the best pressure, pass rushers facts in the entire NFL. In fact, he's only behind Nick Bosa. I believe in terms of, you know, pure pressure rate over the past, like three seasons. Yeah, but man, it's, it's nice having him. I will say immediately it was immediately plugged into this defense where he. You know, feeling a whole doesn't even begin to explain what Giudon does on our defense. And I understand we're probably going to get him for one, two years until we may, you know, see a skill set start to deteriorate. It's not promised, but yeah, you know, I'm not expecting us to get five years out of this guy, but the fact that it was only a third round pick that we gave up for him. It does seem like it was worth it, especially in a year where it does seem like we're going all in, hence what happened less than 24 hours. I say you get a lot more five years out of this next guy. We get the best free agent remaining on the market. I, we were talking about this. Oh, I do want to go back and listen to our best available free agents episode that we did, just of every, we went position by position and said, who are we going to, you know, who do we, who do we bank on? Yeah. And I guarantee you said, Justin, I'm sure both of us. And we were both probably in awe, we were shocked in fact, I made a Facebook post about five or six days ago. And it was just his best landing spots. And he was pro football focus, maybe pro football talk. I don't know which one of those sites was the one that tweeted this or posted it, but they pretty much just said like one of the best landing spots for him was the falcon. A little bit. I've seen that time and time again with multiple players, just, oh, they put the falcons name next to them because they feel like it would be a good fit. It's an area of need. Yeah, especially of a high name defensive player. Yeah, but I, you never really think it's going to come to fruition. And then whenever it was revealed that he actually was going to be visiting us for two days. And on that trip, he went to dinner with Grady Jarrett and AJ Terrell, two of our best defensive players. Oh, yeah. The same thing that happened with Jesse Bates. Oh, Grady Jarrett and Matthew Jude on. I just don't fucking thought. David on Yamada is there as well on that defensive line. In fact, the defensive tackle position, because that's where we invested about three draft picks. This year, after we made the Michael Pinnock's pick, we invested heavily in the defensive line. So that was already our, our strongest area. So the fact that we had a pass rusher and we go get a running mate for Jesse Bates. Like Justin Simmons, this is just an insane pairing. It's still kind of surreal because like I said, this doesn't usually happen to my team. But this is the best safety deal that the Falcons have had probably since Thomas Dakud and William Moore back, you know, 2012. This is the best safety tandem right now on paper going into the season period. It has to be. I truly don't think that there's another. And that's not even me being biased. No. I really think that just pound for pound, the way that their game can complement each other, the way that they are so similar in the same way, you know, it's just, we got two playmakers to go along with an absolute game changer in the front seven, all the matter of, you know, 24 hours. And at this point, I'm feeling pretty excited. Yeah, defense is looking nice because let me just, let me just, before we move on here, let me just tell you this off season recap or off season update. Our general manager was able to take the cap space that we had going to free agency. We needed some speed. We needed the, you know, a wide receiver to compliment Drake London to open things up for guys like Kyle Pitts as well, especially given the fact that we're bringing in a new offensive coordinator going to be running a lot more three wide receiver sets. A lot more 11 personnel, obviously. And Kirk Cousins is just used to that type of receiver too. Yes. So we needed Moonie to get in there. We needed another, you know, reliable weapon and you even mentioned it. The next move, we needed a franchise quarterback, the biggest hole on our team for the past several years. Play call. You can say is head coach slash play caller, but tied in with that is the quarterback position. Right. So you go get an established proven franchise guy like Kirk Cousins coming off of a big injury, but guys, keep in mind this isn't, this isn't Russell Wilson in 2013, where his ability to escape and kind of play off script is what makes this guy elite, his ability to stay in the pocket and just stand there is what makes this guy elite and the fact that he's plugged into this nucleus of young talent, it just makes me feel good about that. So you get a speedy wide receiver to add to the young players you already have. You go get a guy like Kirk Cousins, not only that, but you say Kirk Cousins is a little bit old, right? It's not going to be popular. Fans aren't going to love it, but let's draft a quarterback in the top eight. We plan on winning. We don't plan on being in the top 10. And to be completely honest with you, Michael Pinnis can fucking spin it. Like this, absolutely going to be a problem whenever he does slide in to be our starting quarterback. And I can't wait for that day, but I know it's not this year and probably not next year. So I'm all in on Kirk and you also, now you fast forward, right? That was some, some pretty big defensive or I mean, I apologize, offensive additions. Right. To what we already have in place. We're turning offensive line. A little bit of a regression last year. I'm hoping they can kind of play back to their form, at least in the running game. I really, I'm just going to take a step. Huge step. So Bijon Robinson and Tyler Algier, a phenomenal running back tandem. I love what our offense has. In fact, like outside of wide receiver three. Yeah. I feel pretty damn good for what we have. And you go to the defense side of the ball, obviously, you know, we talked about the needs that we had them defensive line. They came late, but help did finally show up, not only just the rookies that we invested in, but obviously Jude on and then the freshest falcon on the team, Justin Simmons sliding in there's two areas of need now cornerback two. That's a hole, but man, this is the NFL. You're not going to have just studs at every position at every position. You're not just going to be able to fill out your roster with Pro Bowl players left and right. Although I will say I've seen us do some pretty wild things over the past 24 hours. And this is kind of why you bring those guys into these high name guys to train the other guys to see, to let these guys look at these higher upper echelon type of players, the elites, and be like, hey, you want to get here, you work your ass off until you get here. And then you see the improvements in your CB2 or your secondaries, the second team players and shit like that. These guys come in, they bring that or in that the talent and what they will teach these other guys and you know, it makes the whole team better. So not only are you getting a badass pair on the field, you're getting a badass teacher to these other guys. I'm Victoria Cash and I want to invite you to a place called Lucky Land, where you can play over a hundred social casino style games for free for your chance to redeem some serious prizes. No purchase necessary, VGW group, boy prohibited by law, 18 plus terms and conditions apply. No doubt, no doubt, but that just had to be addressed. Most definitely. Obviously we had to talk about so long since we've been on this. You know, I don't remember the last time I took a break this long. I know, man. And between recording, I do apologize to all of the loyal listeners out there, obviously. But they were wondering. Yeah, we, we just, you know, it's the end of the off-season. Obviously, we mentioned this isn't something that we planned, right? It's not like, right, let's take a nice little break before this. Like, no, we've been meaning to get this going, but there's been a lot of things kind of preventing that as summer is winding down, but pre-season's here and football season is legitimately. I mean, you could already bet on it. He's already got a couple. I've already got a, I got a future of that coming, but we will, we'll cross that bridge when we get there, but it is not 24 days away. Give or take. But one thing I did want to talk about with you, Terry, is JJ McCarthy. Oh, yeah. Out for the good. Unfortunate. I don't think he was going to be their starter anyways this season, or at least initially, Riley said. Same, Donald was going to start, but you know that they're probably going to try to get him on the field. Yeah, at least by game 5, I guarantee it. Yeah, like, I, I understand like the other situations going on, Kobe percet starting for the Patriots, Drake Mae knows he might sit the whole year, kind of the same thing with Michael Pinnick's. They expect him to sit. That's kind of a different apples to oranges type of comparison, but I really think the JJ McCarthy had the opportunity to play some football. Especially the way he was playing. Especially if Sam Darnold got the Vikings off to not the start that they wanted. Yeah. So, but I will, I will say this is probably his best opportunity. This is either one of his last stops, or, you know, one of his last, you know, opportunities to be a starter. And look around, you got TJ Hockinson right there. Yeah, you got Justin Jefferson, but I will say Jordan Addison suffered that ankle. Yeah, they carted him off. They thought it was going to be way worse from what I'm understanding is the latest I've seen is it's not going to be what they thought it was. They avoided a season in the injury, hopefully. This could come back in age poorly and end up, you know, getting another evaluation. But as of right now, getting another opinion or something like that, but it's looking all right. That does do it for pre-show notes. Are you ready to get into the defensive version? Brother, I've been ready. Hopefully we can, you know, not copy each other on a couple of these. I have a film that there's going to be some, some tie-ups. That's why I got the first pick and I'm going to have to swing because I don't know exactly how I'm going to start this bad boy off. But just to kind of catch you guys up for those of you that had not listened to our draft of the decades episode offense, which is part one of this bad boy. Part one, baby. We are going to fill out a defense. We're going to have six picks each, a defensive line collectively, you know, a unit. Same thing with a line back and core, a safety tandem, a cornerback group, head coach and return specialist. Yes. But the kicker in this, we're making six selections. So we're going to drag this bad boy across six decades. You can only pick one player or one position group, I should say, from each decade. So if you draft a line backing core from the 80s, you cannot draft a head coach from the 80s, cornerback group from the 80s, vice versa. You guys should know, if you don't know, pause this episode, go back and listen to part one, which is offense. Do it. I dare catch you up. It'll fill you in on how this bad boy works and then come back and you should be up to speed on how this bad boy is going to be playing out. I do get the first pick here. Yes. And we both are for for three defense. Yes. So depending on what, you know, how the draft shakes out, but yes, I plan on having a base for three defense for sure. And I am going to actually solidify that right now by drafting my defensive line. Okay. And I am going to go to the 1970s. Oh, my God. Okay. And I'm going to get the steel curtain. My first dealers talk about littered with Hall of Famers, spearheaded by Mean Joe Green. Yeah, I feel like, I mean, it's going to be tough. Depends on what rule, what rules we're playing with. I preferably would like to play in the 70s rules just to, you know, they can maybe kick in the nuts here and there, do some off the wall tactics. But yeah, give me the steel curtain for my defensive line. Gotcha. Gotcha. All right. Well, that freed me up a little bit. You know, I'm just going to rip the bandit off right now and I'm going to go with my kick returner. Oh, okay. I'm going to start with that. And obviously it's got to be Devin Hester. And the greatest of all time to do it. So I'm going to solidify that as my first pick. Yes, my 2000s. Yeah, he played in two decades. Yeah, I was going to say 10. You want 2000s. Yeah. Okay. I'm going to change that. So that, that does give you an edge there because yeah, head coach returned specialist. That is the key here because our head coach is going to be coaching that offense, right? Right. The offense that we just drafted. So I'm going to go to the safeties. And I'm going to get a safety tandem from the 2010s. Give me the legion of boom, cam chancellor and Earl Thomas. I just feel like with what they bring the way that their game compliments each other. That is one safety group that I will, you know, respectfully say, okay, yeah, I'm very excited about Jesse Bates and Justin Simmons. Right, right. I can understand and appreciate and acknowledge that that's the best safety group I've ever seen. So yeah, I would be foolish not to add them to my team here and take, obviously, use my 2010s pick. So yeah, you're up. Okay. I am going to the 70s. Oh, okay. Yeah. And I am selecting my head coach from the 1970s. And I'm going with Mr. Don Shula. Okay. As my head coach. Obviously, one of the greatest of all time to do it, had the perfect team. He said 1972, let one of the, if not the only, I can't remember. Yeah, the only perfect season. And if I was ever seen. So yeah, I want him coaching my team. Great pick. Great pick. So I'm probably going to save my coach for the very end. Let's see here. I guess 1970s out for me. So I've already taken care of my 70s and 2010s. This is my third pick, I believe, right? Yes, sir. Okay. So I hate to do it to you because I know this is someone that was on your list. No, but I'm going to go ahead and get the 90s out of the way and get my return specialist. Oh, you. And I'm going to have to pluck prime time Deon Sanders. I know he's not necessarily a, you know, well-known kick returner, but what he can do in the punting game is pretty damn phenomenal. But don't worry, he will not be playing any cornerback. Good. So I'm not stealing a cornerback, you know, to put him with whatever corner 10, I might end up getting so strictly off limits playing corner. I know he's probably going to hate that, but you know, so now I cannot select him for corn. Not from maybe not from that decade, which would be difficult because that is when he played. Yeah, that's when I do. That's when I wanted him. I believe he played for the Ravens in the early, early aughts. I'm not sure he had to, because if he didn't make the Hall of Fame until he for sure played for the Ravens in the 2000s, yeah, I don't know who the other cornerback was. Oh, I can't think of either for that group, but, you know, plenty of plenty talented corner. So I have Knox off the 70s, the 90s, and the 2010s. So I'm kind of just, you know, alternating decades. So now I got 80s, 2000s, and 2020s, you are up. So yeah, I believe you have your head coach. In my kick returner gun. Kick returner. And I am going for my defensive line now. I am going for the 2000s. Well, you already plucked Hester from the 2000s, right? No, I did not. Did I? Oh, I did. Fuck me running. So that wouldn't make, what's defensive line were you going to pick? I wasn't going to be the Colts defensive line. Well, I will say, you could still get them because they literally played for the Indianapolis Colts in 2011. Pretty sure they played there in 2012. So that could be my tuition. It could still work for your 2010. Let's do that then. So getting Hester and that, you know, that speed racing, NASCAR package. That was Robert Mathis and Dwight Franey, obviously. And you get a better version of Robert Mathis if you get him in the 2010s. So not a bad selection there. So now I'm here trying to make my pick, neither one of us have gotten linebackers yet. So I thought I need to get that. But I'm going to take my linebackers from a decade that you've already picked yet. So this isn't taking them off of your draft board. I'm going with Chicago Bears, Lance Briggs, Brian Nurlacher from the 2000s. So that gives me the still curtain. The Bears line back in core. And then obviously the Legion of boom is my safeties. So in a pretty good spot. I can't forget Deon Sanders is the return specialist. So you still need your head coach. So I still need head coach in corner and corners. And I need my line backing and I think safeties. Which decades do you still need? I think eighties and the twenties. That's exactly the same two decades that I need, except I need head coach and corner. So are, so wait, so you still need corners? Oh, yeah, that's right. That's right. I do need corners. Which I may go ahead and select them right now. It was between the Cowboys, obviously, from the 90s with Deon Sanders. And now I am selecting the Steelers secondary with Rod Woodson and company. Obviously Rod Woodson would be headlining and the Hall of Famer to come out of that group. But what a tandem these guys were that, that, you know, solidified that that still curtain that helped them thrive, that led them to get more sacks, you know, holding them down in the back like crazy. Yeah, intersection like crazy. But obviously, you know, if you could make the quarterback hold the ball a little bit longer, it always leads up to the guys up front to get more stats and better stats. So yeah, I'm selecting the 90s with my cornerbacks. So I will go ahead and get my head coach out of the way here. I'm going to go Bill Walsh from the eighties. So, you know, obviously one of the bills we're going to be taking. Yes, how to take Bill Walsh from the 80s. So he's going to be head coaching my offense, that West Coast offense is going to be led by Patrick Mahomes. His boy Jerry Rice, it's familiar with it. Yeah, except this guy. Now he has Julio, Tony Gonzalez, and obviously the great wall of Dallas. So all I have left is corners. That'll be my final pick in this draft. I'm going to toss it over to you now. All right. Well, I am taking my next pick to my linebacker core and pretty much the captain of my defense, the anchor that will lead us and that's Lawrence Taylor and the Giants linebacker crew. We just talked about them winning the Super Bowl. Yes, just now, but you're taking them from the 80s. Yes, yes, yes, a younger LTA, more hungrier, less polished, but more of a, you know, that go-getter. I mean, I did. I did NFL immortals on an LT, not that long ago. He is that he is will be a lot. Let's just hope that we are not going to be doing any urine samples. And you should be good to go. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. I will make sure Mr. Shula and I conversate over this a little bit. We will make sure things will be a little, a little lenient on that end. So now I got to get my corners. I've already taken my safeties. What are you thinking? I got the Legion of Buma, obviously, and you know, I can't get the other members of the Legion of Buma because they played in the same decade. So I got to go to the 20s and I am going to get, you know, I'm gonna say screw it, right? If you're playing with this type of supporting cast, you know, the front seven, the linebackers and the safeties, I don't feel like you need lights out Hall of Fame corners. Yeah. So just give me the ones that just won the Super Bowl. Give me luxurious need and trimming Duffy of the Kansas City Chiefs. Okay. I'm going to plug them into this defense. I'm going to use my corners in the 2020. So just a solidified mine. 70s, still curtain, defensive line, 80s, head coach, Bill Walsh, 90s return specialist, Dion Sanders, 2000s, linebacker, core, earlocker, and Lance Briggs, 2010s, safety duo, cam chancellor, Earl Thomas, and then 2020s, with Jerry Sneed, and trimming Duffy. It even is looking real nice. Pretty solid. I had a lot of time for you about this. Pretty fucking solid. So my last group that I have selected here would be my safety group. And I'm going to take kind of the same approach you did. I want young. I wanted to use guys who just recently just played in some high level games. And that's going to be the safety deals for the Baltimore Ravens, Call Hamilton and Marcus Williams. These two are literally Swiss army nice in both of their games. You could click and play them, pick, pluck and play them pretty much anywhere. And you know, these guys will have you interceptions out the wall. Do both of them come up and make tackles. You know, just guys that you want in the back end. So I am all set with my head coach being Mr. Don Shula from the 70s, from the 80s. I've got the Giants line backing group headlined by Mr. Lawrence Taylor. From the 80s, I went or from the 90s, I went a cornerback group, Rod Wilson and they still are Steelers cornerback and group from the 2000s. I went Colts. Oh wait, no, I went Devin Hester. That's right. I went Devin Hester return. And in 2010s, I went Dwight Franey and Colts defensive line. 2020s. Oh, yeah. My line, my safety group. See, I will say that is great too, as well, because what Kyle Hamilton can do, obviously, you move him around, bring him up in the box. So I feel like your defense would definitely be more physical, just with the presence of, I mean, obviously we got Cam Chancellor, but you know, Lawrence Taylor, there's only one Lawrence Taylor. I feel like we both did pretty good here with this draft. Obviously, if it's only two people pick him with so many Hall of Famers, with so many, you know, legends you can choose from, it was impossible to really not put together a good team. But all in all, this was a fun exercise, probably the last fun exercise that we'll be able to have here in the off season, because the rest is probably, you know, just strictly business. We're going to strictly boo try to cram out as many team of destinies and NFL mortals as we can before the regular season gets here. Obviously, we're going to get more stuff from the college wall function as well. I hope Grim Reaper is working to be, you know, sending me some more rivalry episodes, he's trying to kind of tie things in with what we're doing schedule wise. I appreciate that. It's definitely a nice creative way to get the rivalry episode or the rivalry series kind of tied in a little bit with what we're doing. It's almost like a little bit of breaking bad, better call Saul, you know, you're connecting two separate shows together through little nuggets and things like that. But that does do it for Terry and I here on this episode of the football function podcast draft of the decades part two defense edition. Yeah, baby. Thank you guys so much for tuning in means the world to us, especially those of you that are going to see this episode drop pop up on your podcasting platform, whichever one of you know, it is that you prefer. And you're going to say, Oh, the boys just dropped a soda. It's been a little bit. Hey, it has been a little bit, but we appreciate your patience.
