This podcast is part of the Sports Social Podcast Network. [MUSIC] Football's free, but it's burning through to my soul. Yeah, cats, cats, cats, you're gonna set me on fire. Mm, afraid of flaming, but I know just where to go. Yeah, the seasons can't get off and the bill will feel broken. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] >> Boom, the boys are back in surprise, I lied to you guys. I have a way better Friday episode for you all. I think this is like his sixth or seventh all time appearance. He is the owner of the biggest collection of purple shoes anywhere in the world. Anytime he tweets, you're getting a notification because you have to know when he is bringing on the cats, it is the king of the cats, king of Kansas. He is the man, the myth, the legend, Taylor, Brat, Taylor, welcome back. How's the Brockworth's business treating you? >> Honestly, I have no idea. I just think it's wild that my face is on a broad at villains and my video that's just cooler than heck. And in your intros, we need to get you doing some WWE wrestling intros. Your intro game is on point, on point. I need to maybe bring you home so you can welcome me through the door at my own house and my kids will be like, it's here. >> I'll do it, I'll do it. You let me know and I'll bust in that door and I'll give you a great introduction. I got to ask, cuz I imagine it's better for you than even most folks. I mean, how fun is this build up to the football season as you and I are talking, we're what, 16 days away from kickoff, 15 days from when the boneheads will get to listen to this. I imagine it's almost, it's like counting down for Christmas for you guys in that building right now. >> Yeah, I mean, this is going to be very, we gotta block the outside noise. Even though I listen every single morning, I'm getting my workout in. So I guess I haven't done a good job in good. But it's been super exciting to see the young guys rise up to be in who they are right now, where the team is at right now. Obviously, it's cool, it's exciting. We're near it alone and we love this place. It's really fun to be around the atmosphere and the vibrancy of this young, real dudes, just ready. I mean, me and coachmen spoke to the band yesterday, I had to go speak on Sunday night, tell the incoming freshmen about buying the tickets and introducing the captains, and then, I mean, this can be here before you know it. And then once it's here, it's a go, go, go. So you know, it's the weight, yeah, it's biting at your fingernails. So ready to go. So there's a handful of things I want to talk about. But the first thing I want to, it's something that's near and dear to both of us, and it is the great state of Kansas. I think you're one of the few people who love this state just as much as I do. Being a K state alum, being a proud Kansan, obviously you love all the guys on the team, but how fun is it going to be? You see the star quarterback, he's a Kansan. You have the returning running back. He's a Kansan. You have Dylan Edwards coming back to K state, and he mentioned part of the reason why is he felt like he wanted to come back home to his home state. How does that make your ad Astra per Aspa, you know, some flower heart feel, when you're able to see that? And that's just offense. It's all over defense as well, you get a Manhattan wrestler at nose tackle. You got guys on the offensive line. You're two starting corner back, like it's all over the roster. I imagine you're just getting giddy looking at that depth chart. Yeah, it's super fun watching the state kids excel in it's death. That's something I love. I'm so glad coach climbing on what's doing at one state. Kids they selling, you know, you want to get it these guys. You know, two uploads are charting corners. Like you say, you know, money, I hope they start to come and take it from the state. Guys, it's crazy. You know, we played the big coach championship game a couple of years ago. I think I looked down the field one time, the defense have seven guys out there. And that's awesome. And the guys have a chip on their shoulder because they're not front. The places there's most people in Seoul in California just to come here and believe in system and buy it to each other and go out, achieve those goals and represent them. You know, I talked to you about scouts every day. Talked about where Hadley's from. And I said to those guys, that's what you guys, but Hadley's from Kansas is what everybody thinks Kansas and I said, and that's it is what it is. But we have a lot of good kids here. You can't care how we'll work hard. And that at the end of the day is what the state is, case state is, and what the kids are that we want. Obviously can't talk about anyone who isn't signed, but even looking back to last year, grabbing some of the best kids in the state. You look forward to this year per capita for her capita, the size that Kansas is, you got two five stars, most in the entire state. You had a handful of four stars last year, and I know you guys don't look at the recruiting rankings, but you know, there's a handful of blue chip guys next year as well is the nation finally waking up to the fact that there's some real talent here in the state of Kansas in high school, just kind of figuring out what you've always known or what's going on, man. You know, I think it, I mean, there's talent in state, there's no doubt that kids have grown the desire to really get wild, there's only been coaches out there in the country, you know, Sheron Law, Michigan's from Derby, Kansas, they developed a fermi college and I was there. I mean, you got Willie Fritz, not Houston with the Shawnee Mission Northwest, actually really the same jersey number as my dad. So whenever they used to talk on the phone, he goes, I used to wear dad, 84, because that's what your dad wore. He was the best player at Northwest at the time. So I mean, just to see all these coaches, you know, obviously we're going to set guys from this area, I mean, eventables, I mean, there's a lot of guys from this area and it's making a competition, I think a lot of harder and it's getting our guys seen more, it's just getting the kids to buy in, you know, and it's like you said, don't pay attention to rankings, I'm sure there's so many fans up when they're running me out in town and we got Jacob Parrish and, you know, looking at what Austin Moore's done in his career to be supple me, you know, we can go on and on and talk about these guys. You know, Keni Garber, unbelievable, love it, but it does, it's so fun to clip it back and see what these guys have done. Yeah, it's so fun to see that and I think back to last class and think, okay, you know, who could be those guys? Obviously, you know, very early on, but are there any of those true freshmen that are already starting to pop and you're, you know, giving some elbows to guys around the, you know, facility say, I told you about this one, told you about this one. You know, I never get credit for the good ones. I only get blamed for the bad ones, but I'm excited for, for that solid online class that you got, knows a smaller class and next year will be a bigger class. And then I'm interested to see what will happen. And I'm sure you might hit on this roster on the number limit. You know, that's going to be crazy too. And what's really, it's awesome and what we didn't have with the handle and recruiting is what we've gone for the third three. You know, I don't think there's been a year since I took over, we didn't have, you know, the COVID shutdown, the portal, NIL, transfer conference of realignment. Now, transfer portal was bigger. I mean, it's just, and now they're going to cut the rosters. So now we just got to keep managing to keep figuring, finding a way. That was the next one I was going to bring up because a lot of folks, and I think this is the folks who aren't entrenched in college football. It's more the generic sports fanciant and like, oh, wow, roster limit of 105. That's an increase of 20 scholarship. Oh, this is, this is crazy. But what I think a lot of folks don't realize that could be cutting down roster sizes across the country. And I mean, you guys, I mean, usually around 125, 135, there's some schools who I think had upwards of 150 guys on their roster. How do you guys know how you're going to handle it? Is it officially like written into law? Like how when that news comes through, what do you do? I don't know how your hair isn't completely great. You know, I know my hair is going to be great. It's not my kids. It's not my kids. We're going to share great. So everything about all of the rules and the changes every year that are happening. You know, I think we kind of have a plan in place to get to knock down every roster of the country. And that's what trying to explain the high school time kids and high school coaches, like this might be the biggest hit that any of us will take because we're, we're losing even though we said about 125 guys, we're going to lose 20 guys either. We're going to sign a smaller class. We can't take walkouts because now all of them will be unable to react and they're just going to be able to come and act. But yeah, I don't know what's going to happen. You know, that's that's the end. It's not official official, but we feel like it's a pretty done deal. But yes, now it's preparing. Can't just take guys to take guys, you know, you can't use. And now we're going to have to really figure some things out with our own roster. I don't know yet. And it sucks to take away a lot of opportunities with guys. We've had a lot of success with our time. You think about as the walkdown or the late sign. You know, thrive here in the school, this guy's a little bit. And now it's really going to be, I'm really going to be picking, which is, which is a good thing, but it just sucks because it takes away all the students. Well, not only that, and I hope, I hope, you know, kids find opportunity, lower down, whether it's in the junior colleges, whether it's, you know, FCS, division two, et cetera, et cetera. But I think back to every rule that's come out over the last five years, think about how much it's affected the high school athlete, especially in football. Again, I understand why the COVID eligibility thing happened. And I think in case it's done a good job maximizing that. But that took away countless roster spots from high school kids. This one is cutting down roster spots for high school kids. And I do hope that, you know, place, you know, trickle down to Washra. I hope these kids continue to play because college football is the best game in the world. And I'm a little scared about what this ruling, the unintended consequences of it's going to be. Yeah, no doubt. And I don't know why ever you were going to make a big change. You have some consistency holding polling. But yeah, it's just crazy to think you're a COVID. We had a psychist never visited here. Yeah, that's crazy. And now we're going to have to figure out a roster to coming it down. And kids are going to lose opportunities and I don't think. Yeah, you just, oh man, just kind of use your little picture stump. And you just want every kid to come here and thrive and fall in love with our cat and be a little cat forever. Yeah, we'll move on and we'll talk a little bit more about this upcoming season. Only six home games. One of those is on a Friday. How much of a hassle, how much of an extra bit of stress is that put on you and your folks trying to find times for kids to visit when it's really only five traditional home games. I was going to say the Friday game definitely takes away the visit for guys. And it takes a lot of us being able to give see kids. Well, play on Fridays. I sit around the hotel or back at home on home game. And I have an eye to iPad set up and a TV and I'm watching this. We put low kids by all in state. So you guys think it's going to be fired up and do you watch it? I said, no, no, I'll even tell him to gain my best game. It may well be watching, but no, no, I mean, it takes away your eyes from seeing kids and it takes away your kids seeing you because they're playing the same night we do. And obviously the conference picked this thing on us and it just all these kids that we're going through a schedule is trying to find out who plays on Thursdays and Saturdays and invites those guys to play a game of Friday. I mean, the atmosphere is going to be unbelievable. I can always just give the best fans in the world. But it just, it's just a hard point. Like I said, this takes away another one of those long Saturday games. Yeah, it sounds like there's a lot of schools that are moving away from that, you know, another college in the state. We won't talk about them. They're, they just so happen to be playing on that Friday night as well. So lots of college ball on that specific Friday. Are you guys able to get any official visits for Irish players? If you guys are over there, you know, if there's a little, you know, Irish linebacker, feisty little lad, are you able to get him to come to that game as an official visit since that's technically a home game? You know, that'd be pretty fun. We should do that. Maybe find a really good rugby player or a soccer player that can kick or punt. Let's go. Let's give them a whirl. Maybe I'll have to press the buttons on compliance to see what we can be done. You know, what was really cool is when we got that bullet announcements, not only seeing the guys in spaces, but the ball, or not the ball, but the game reached out to us, the people who listened. And they said that they are trying to find in the same high schools that would come in the piece that say we don't, in case you won't know how to drive and to travel, how to find them about radius. And I mean, I had some high schools in this area ready to go. They were fired up just for the opportunity to stay set. The experience for those high schools is like the experience we all have. It's a bi-changing experience. I believe we'll know that we never forever and I wanted to get some of the schools in the state to get a chance to do that to you. But maybe next time. So yeah, it'll be fun. I guess we'll see what we can maybe we'll do an official visit overseas. Let's try that one live team. Come check it out. Yeah, you'll have to let me know how that goes. It is too bad because I've signed up for the mailing list. And yeah, there are like the Friday or the Thursday, Thursday or Friday before that game, it's like five games. And it's like the Irish U-19 versus like the British U-19. And then they're like this year, it's two, two schools from like Atlanta playing each other and two schools from Florida playing each other. So it's a it's a shame. Kasey is doing that. You know, if anyone from Kasey is listening, change your rules and make it. Let's get some of these Kansas kids out in Ireland, man. How cool would that be? Oh, it would be awesome to get us factories. But other than that, we'll just, you know, I guess I'll have some fun. Now you got to throw your promo for. Well, yeah, I mean Manhattan Brewing Company. Look, I tell you what, first off, Taylor, they want to do a beer with you. So the ball is in your court there. So yeah, look, we're all going to enjoy the Guinness factory. But if you want to enjoy the best beer in the state of Kansas, all you have to do is get down to points Avenue and go in there, get a couple pints, get a couple four packs, get a couple of crawlers to go. The pumpkin beer is back. That's my favorite beer, the towny wheat beer. That is the official tailgating beer of the season because look, it's going to be super hot for those first couple of games. I love a pumpkin beer, but no one needs to be chunking, you know, pumpkin beer, chugging it made with full pumpkin pies, Taylor. So I don't know if you're a pumpkin pie or pecan pie guy, but it's brewed with full pumpkin pies. It's delicious. Get down there. It's the best brewery in the state's best beer in the world. And then they open up in Wichita, right? Today, it is so it is next weekend. Their space is opening. They have a pop up this weekend. So today, tomorrow and Sunday as folks are listening down in Wichita. So look, it's your two favorite places. Wichita and Manhattan, Kansas, Manhattan Brewing Company is there. So again, we need it. That's why I have Delano District right downtown by the baseball diamond. It's right by no free ads with TJ burgers and those places right off the Lano street. So yeah, I got to go check it out. I might maybe that's why I shouldn't brew my beer back home. Oh, I don't know if they have any, I think all their brewing equipment in Manhattan, which says we'll see. It's 100% going to be where I am on December 21st before K-State men's basketball plays, Wichita State down there. So yeah, well, unless, I mean, I don't know, no, we're winning the big 12. The playoff game won't be on December 21st. So the season's coming up. What is the, what are all the recruiting, their texting? What are they most excited about? Whether they're already committed or they're prospects looking to commit. What are those young guys excited about with this football team? What are they excited to watch? I think just excited to see the energy and what we do offensively. You can see many honest waves and member meetings. We've got some new suspension in our years. And of course, we're here to see. Is the atmosphere is the band is the game day. Is the smell of the telephone is the things that make it so special. And what makes it, it makes us all of it so much is what they're here to see. Even the guys that are committed, they're ready to come back and see them. I mean, it's, you know, this game day is never going on. Every game day is expensive. Everyone and just getting kids here to see that and see it. And feel like I'm just excited to get them back up here. So you can sell it the way it's supposed to be. What is it? What is the moment every time you come out of the time? Like when does it hit you? Is it during pregame warmups? Is it right before kickoff? When are you feeling that energy the most? You're having a walk in a conflict saying it's a museum by myself. I'm the first one here. One of them in the bands out there to film me whatever for time in the morning. And I walk out there and they just, like I said, and smell the feel. Everything is there. The best feeling of forces when the game know that we got them. That's the best feeling of the day without a doubt. I mean, all of those are great. There's nothing better to win. So I was sad. I don't care which you can find a way, find a way to get over in hand with the whole game itself. The whole build up the game, that thing, you know, we do a great job. Yeah, it's fear of the fan base, everybody that lives in the morning. And that's what makes me up in the league game. All right, I got one more question before we end with some fun ones. You can get back to bring me on the cats. I think this is one of the most underrated things that happened in the offices. And but it's drew little coming back home to K state. How happy were you to see someone who has his roots, you know, with that 2012 big, tall championship team, he's been around quite, you know, not quite 10 years because he spent a little time out in El Paso. But how pumped were you guys to get him back? And how much is that going to help out the offensive line with Connor Riley being the offensive coordinator as well? They just gave the guys fashionable seals about Kansas State. I was saying, you know, we grew up walking on the start of everything. And he's worked for he's continued to work for me successfully to make his name to build his grand, but makes it. And he helped us every time. And he's so excited to be back to me. We'll be Kelly, three, Kelly, to me. It's like eight years when he's only got married shoes and that's. And so they're both back here, you know, having two moms, we get it. The violin, if it was given the extra and the other wire. And that's what makes the stadium the best. And he understands that. And we all understand that, you know, we'll be under staff and do this. That he cares. First after they do care, let's just go do the extra and let's find the right. And you're definitely a guy who stands by that. And then he's brought up that way. And, you know, being a walk-on for a guy who has hosted the freaks, to be the GA and drove them around to see all sides of it. And I'm excited to have him back at it. All right, before we have a little bit of fun and call it a day, we'll give a shout out to our friends over at Charlie Hustle. Countdown to kickoff is beginning. So they just dropped some new stuff forward. They're Kansas City football collection, but have no fear. Their K-State gear is on the way. A new jacket, a new hoodie, and two new T-shirts. I won't make Taylor pick his favorite Charlie Hustle shirt because there are so many. But maybe we need to talk to them about getting a bringer of the cats. Shirts at Charlie Hustle. We might need to talk to them about that one. Charlie Hustle, vintage made fresh. We are two weeks away from giving away some new gear. The sea of grinning. I know you want shirt. I don't want my face on the T-shirt, but look at my face on some problems. That's a little more, maybe, I don't know if a T-shirt. That is true. All right, so we'll end with four fun ones. Everyone's been obsessed with the new college football game. If they were to go back in time and put you into a college football game, what would your overall rating be? It would be so low. God, we had to catch puns after practice today. It was the first time that Coach Edward called me out and said he is. I look good going to get the punt and it hit me in the arms. I mean, I had, I just picked a couple of them. But, you know, that's where my rating would be. So I'm already glassing as well. So I'd be at the bottom of the ball. I'd put myself on the game. So we wouldn't be seeing any of the game. All right, the second one, we all know how excited you get out on the field during big plays. There's been some iconic pictures and I love watching you from my spot up in section 7. What coach, so who's going to be number two, the most animated down on the sidelines this year? Hey, number two. I'm excited to see how Coach Wells is. I'm sure he's not animated, but he's got a lot of energy and a lot of juice. I'm so fun to be around. Gosh, that's a really good push. Well, coach plays a pretty even keel even though he gets fired up. I don't know, you know, the kind of coolest part. I'm just seeing the guys for the first time that suited up. Watch them on the side, like, you know, they're not one. You can clip me by the end and then fire it up. The straight staff doesn't come to you in the job. He's totally lucky. Well, I'm just amazing. You know, I'm just excited for it. All right. Number three, if you had it your way, would we be seeing White Helmets and Pants this year? Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, this is the biggest question I've ever been. Oh, I'm just going to nod my head and not say anything. So that way, that way, I don't, I'm not guilty of anything. We could just move on, you know, oh, I knew that would be, I knew that would be a reaction. I knew that'd be a reaction and then I'm right on zoom. I can see myself and then I think the sunburned. I got already can practice outside of it. No one got me. And then the final one, did you get to taste the mascot strawberry down on the field after the bowl game this past year? Was it all eaten up by Cooper and all the, you know, offensive lineman by the time you got to get in there? There was some there, but after I saw every dirty paw, stick their hands in there, I avoided it. And I take my kids over to see it. The coolest part and why winning bowl games, not only is it so important, but the coolest part is both our kids. It's got the silence per game. And so I get to get all three of them down there. My wife and my mom down there. So that's without an ethical problem. We walk over there actually stepped on all the pop parts. And my kids are more mesmerized by the pop parts they're stepping on. And then they go over there and see all the gloves full of cake, pop parts. And I said, no, we're not getting that. We don't need to leave. I don't need you getting sick on the flight home. But, you know, this, that was so cool. They did such a good job with that bowl game. Media, the hype, the marketing, nothing's great. But the coolest part, F were to celebrate. And it was so cool. It was kind of too insane guys walking off. He was coming, he doesn't come out on my career. And yeah, it was a thing to make it all up with. Yeah, I mean, shout out to, I'm mad at myself for not bringing up Desmond Purnell. It's peaky cat, not from the right to peak high school, but still low. I'm still number one Desmond Purnell fan, probably outside of his family and outside of the guys in that room. So shout out to Des. I can't wait to see what he does this season. But that's all I have for you, Taylor. I really appreciate you always coming on again. One of these days we're going to make sure we do it in person. At Manhattan Brewing Company, drinking responsibly, of course. But what do you want to tell the boneheads? What do you want to tell K-State fans? The floor is yours. Well, I first want, I'm going to help this as the welcome song, because I'll let that explain it. Yep, yep, you got it, buddy. It's gone. It's got to be the hit set for the cat attack. Oh, yeah. That's Blitz month, baby. Okay, because that's, that's the best too. You know, I just, you know, fans into the boneheads and all people that support us. And I just understand that we do everything we can. Love you guys. This place is a special place. You guys continue to get the sale down there. You know, every time you tell them to be sure. Anytime you're out, tell them that you're talking about your ads. We'll always get it all we got from our players, to our staff. We're just excited that we're a part of this. I love it. I get to represent all of them every single day. Obviously, the last year was a tough year for the Brat family. We're going to rise up. We're going to keep behind it. And that's the only way to approach it. And again, I always think you've just got your support and everybody else's support. Cats. Yeah. And 100% I know it was a rough one. I know that's never tough, but hope to know that myself, everyone can say we love you and we know better times are ahead. But we do love you very much, Taylor. And I can't wait to see you on the field this season. I might have to come down on the field and say hi before they throw me back up into the stands. I know I know away games. I'm going to be at least at the BYU game. So I might have to, you know, they're nice up in Utah. So maybe their security, you know, won't try to throw me in jail up there if I come down and try to. Sober, right? I mean, you'll have to. Don't throw me in jail. You're seeing an insult link or where? Yeah. So we'll know I'm flying into Salt Lake, but me and all my buddies, we have an Airbnb right there in Provo. So I have no idea what sort of nonsense we're going to get into up there. But a lot of UIE fans, the virtual tournament, virtual tournaments, my favorite event every year in Tennessee, which I'm in. They spare me by fan who gave my wife a go from three days and absolutely gave us five minutes for the famous. They were pretty young. It was, we'll see in the back there. I did not think they could come in as many as they gave me. Oh, they, they, they travel. And I think the big 12 tournaments going to like five days now with 16 teams, so. That's not good for me. Well, if you need me to belly out, I'm just a, I'm just a quick phone call away. But that's, that's all we have for Taylor Bratt. Truly the greatest of all time for Chauncey, the best dog in the world. My name is Scott McFarland. We love you guys and go cats. It's time to get set for the cat attack. You can feel the excitement.
