Welcome to the One Life podcast with Becca White. I am your host, and this is episode 36, the final surrender. Yesterday, we discussed surrendering our will and our life as a means of greater strength and peace. Today, I'd like to build on that by discussing physical surrender. Many years ago, I tried out yoga for the first time in Springville, Utah, down in the dip. We had an extremely talented woman open the local chapel one Monday morning, and instruct a group. Many of us were beginners like myself. Anyway, at the end of our practice that first day, lying on my back as the peaceful silent dark in the peaceful silent darkness, I began crying. They were not sad tears or happy tears, just tears. I was perplexed. After this happened several weeks in a room, I approached the instructor and asked her about this strange phenomenon. As I am not a crier, I don't cry. It just isn't really a thing. She explained that sometimes when we open our bodies through stretching, we open our souls, and whatever needs to come out just does. I accepted this and just kept right on crying at the end of yoga classes. Years later, when we moved to Colorado, I found a new instructor that spent much of the class talking about the practice of yoga beyond the poses. She was educating at every breath and turn. After the physical rigor of downward dog, upward dog, cobras, pigeons, and warriors of all kinds, we finally made our way to the final pose of class, savasana, or the final surrender. This is done by laying on the back with the feet a little wider than hip distance with the toes falling outward. The arms are resting alongside the body with the palms up. Shoulders are relaxed back and neck long. In savasana, the instructor explained, "We practice surrendering and letting go of all physical tensions as we allow ourselves to melt into the mat." We stayed in the pose for from five to eight minutes, which allowed us additional relaxation and surrender. She explained that physical surrender allows us to connect with our own divinity or our soul, which in turn allows us to connect with the divinity of the higher power. With her explanation, she connected all the dots, all my dears, of all the ears. Now I know why I cry when I do yoga. Without knowing it, surrendering all physical tension has taught me how to connect to and with divinity. It is divine connection without expectation. It is just being with God. As a final note, savasana is also known as the corpse pose. This helps us recognize that we have to let go of certain aspects of our human experience. It also signifies the true and final surrender when our body will surrender our soul to the divine and then will, quote unquote, melt back into Mother Earth. For me, this is another powerful reminder that life is a gift. So today's invitation is this. Try out savasana. Practice surrendering all of your physical tensions. And when you surrender all of your physical tensions, what do you find? We only get one life. Let's make it our best. [BLANK_AUDIO]
