Hoodie is a little under the weather today. Have a good weekend, my guy feel better at 'em. Hey, Abdullah, that's where you find 'em on Twitter, is in for Hoodie. Shay is in his rightful spot in the executive producer chair, and J. Moore's at the controls. I'm David Kaplan, 3-1-2-3-2-3-2-3-7-7-6. We will have a jam-packed show. Tom Thayer is gonna spend the eight o'clock hour with us. Can't wait, love that dude. Jesse's gonna give us a baseball update because the cops are in the luxury tax, and they stink, and Courtney Cronin will be with us with her weekly hit. She's with us Mondays and Fridays, and then the Friday folder. Abdullah, how are ya? What's up? I'm excited that coach Iber Flus went to the podium yesterday. I was listening to Waddle and Sylvie as I do every day, and the next thing I hear is, and Sylvie was nervous that he was gonna go yeah, the bangles aren't playing there guys, we're not either. And I was right there with him. And then Iber Flus came to the podium, and here's what he said after the joint practice. Really good day, and I wanna just compliment, first of all, our guys and also Cincinnati for being professionals. You know, you always worry about, you know, guys, you know, going off and fighting, all those things, and they did, they were great. They stayed on their feet, stayed away from the quarterback on both sides, and did a really good job of just being professional. And they were physical, and we got some really good work done. So, a lot of good situations in that practice. Like I said, it's the first time I've done that one day, joint practice, and again, I thought it was really good. A lot of good work in the kicking game. As you guys saw, certainly with that long period, we have a kickoff kickoff return, that was very beneficial for us to be able to go back and look at that punt and punt return, that was really good too. But again, we finished off with the two minute at the end, I thought that was good with the ones and twos. A lot of good work overall. In terms of the starters this week, you know, I'm just going to say this, we feel really good about our plan and the process that we've been through so far in training camp. And you will see the starters in that game. You know, so again, I talked about competitive reps the other day, and I feel like we've gotten a lot of good competitive reps. You know, ones on ones, a lot of good situations. This day was another chance for us to get competitive reps against another opponent, another skill set, which was outstanding. And then this week coming up on Saturday, we'll get another chance to get some reps there too. So we feel really good about that. - So when he said that, when he said, feel really good about our plan, I fully expected Adam that he's going to go. And we got good work in here today with the Bengals and the starters are going to sit. And when he said, and the starters, you're going to see the starters like, yes, because Caleb needs work. He does. There are a lot of people were thrilled how he looked yesterday. I'll give you the numbers in a little bit. But he needs, the first time he runs out of the tunnel, it sold your field, can't be against the Titans. - No, and I wasn't worried that Irafus was going to say anything because they learned from last year. And he said it before these games started, at the beginning of training camp, when he met the media with Ryan Polls. When, you know, when training camp started, he and Ryan Polls met the media. And one of the first questions was, are you going to play starters in the preseason? He didn't play them last year. Are you going to change it up because you guys started so flat against the Packers, against the Chiefs, against, you know, the whole half of the season, basically. - The Bucks? - Yeah, and he said, yes, we're going to, you know, we're going to, we looked at what CJ Stroud did. We looked at what Jordan Love did. And we saw between 45 and 50 snaps for each guy. And so that's what we're going to, we're probably going to lean towards that plan. So I was never worried that he wasn't going to start because also last year, they did two joint practices. As opposed to just the one, I thought that they were going to practice indoors yesterday. And I think the belief going in was that they were going to practice indoors yesterday. I think they practice outdoors because the rain was light at the time and then it kind of picked up. But they got, I don't know if they were going full go. I know two guys got injured, had to be carted off and put an air cast on from the Bengals. So yeah, they were going full go and everything like that. But I kind of figured that this would be their plan with Caleb. Like he's a rookie, he's never played. They got what, 20 snaps, 18 to 20 snaps against the Bills last week, 18 snaps, okay. So 18 snaps, you figure another maybe 25 snaps this time. That puts you right in the 40s right there. And then you don't play against the Chiefs. I disagree. I think that they should play a series. Because if, now I know we're already, this is this week, we're already moving on to next week. I'm just saying that's what I think Iberfuso do. I think he might, I would be fine with them playing a series and I would play them a series against the Chiefs because Caleb's never experienced a short week like this before. And I know it's not Sunday to Thursday, it's Saturday to Thursday technically. But just plan that as if it's a normal week. Like hey, Caleb, this is what it's going to look like when we play on Thanksgiving. Like they have a stretch right now. It's three games in like 11 days or something like that. If you go towards the end of the season at Thanksgiving, they play three games in like 10 days. They have a Monday night game, a Sunday night game, or a Sunday game and then they play a Thursday game. - Remember, Nagy had to do that and they won all three. - Exactly, so I would get him ready. Like he doesn't have to play a full quarter, a full half in the final game against the Chiefs. Just say, hey, this is what we do on short weeks. On Monday we do this, on Tuesday we do this, on Wednesday we do this, you're going to suit up, you're going to play one series, that's it just to get into the rhythm of what it's like to play in a short week. And then we're going to get you out of there because they have like 17 days in between. - Yeah, I would be. - That game against the Chiefs and the Titans. - Totally cool with that, I don't think Ebert Flusil do it. If things go well tomorrow, if they don't go well, that's a different story. - I think you know, I mean, what's he going to throw a bunch of picks? I think it'll be pretty vanilla. - What terrain are we supposed to get tomorrow? - I don't think it. That's a good question. I thought I saw these off. We had Tracy yesterday and she said there's going to be some storms in the area. - Yeah, I will check out the ABC weather because Tracy is off today, I believe. She's not coming in with us. - Showers early, then scattered thunderstorms developing later in the day. Chance of rain, 60%. Let's look at that hourly forecast here. As you join us weather on the eights here on ESPN 1000, traffic on the 12s. (upbeat music) So tomorrow around noon, you're looking at a 39% chance of rain, some lightning in the area. So if you're heading towards the game, be prepared for a potential lightning delay. In the one and two o'clock hour, rain picks up around 50% chance. Highs in the mid 70s, wind south east, 12 miles, or sorry, out of the west heading southeast, about 12 miles per hour to 11 miles per hour. So probably not going to affect the kicking game, but some lightning and scattered thunderstorms in the area. If you're heading to the game, grab a friend and a poncho. - Boy, put that on your reel. - That's what I'm here for. - How about that? - We'll be back with weather at 718 here, as you're joining us. We now have the traffic. - On the eights. (laughing) - With Shane Orling. - Shane. (laughing) - Delays on the Kennedy, I'm sure. - Inbound Eden says who gets one of us. - It gets crewed and merged. It's screwed everywhere. (laughing) Next. - God, I was downtown for, I went and worked out and then I had a lunch yesterday. And, oh my God. Three o'clock in the afternoon is like, oh yeah, ridiculous get down. - It's horrible. I'm normally out of here. I go work out and then I'm gone. - It's horrible. We've now come to a point in this city where traffic is just bad everywhere. Chris and I were at Metallica last Friday and we walked back to the station from Soldier Field and I was driving him home and we got on the highway and it was bumper to bumper traffic at 11.45 at night. - It's insane. - We're just one of those cities now where it's bumper to bumper all the time. Unless you're getting up at like five in the morning, like I flew here this morning. But other than that. - You live up by Riggly? - Yeah. - So I just tucked Lake Shore in and like, that's fine. But anytime you're on any highway, it's crap here now. - Yeah, for me coming in in the mornings, so I get up the four, actually four 24s when I got to be out of bed. That's my last alarm. - Yeah, whether on the eight's wake ups on the fours. - Yeah. 24, I grew up in a family of four. I have four boys and Mark McGuire was my favorite player. - Do you have a four tattoo? - I don't. - I should get a four tattoo. - Get a 24 right across your whole back. - Get a four, four, four tattoo. - Yeah, I actually just was planning with my buddy Matt. We're gonna go get new ink together. And that might be a good one to get a four. That's my number. I like that. - There you go. - But anyway, coming in, it's usually pretty good. Going out, it's not good. So tomorrow, Caleb Williams will duck under center, go through the whole thing. It's sold your field. Super cool to be able to watch him again. I'm so excited. I don't get excited about preseason football, but when he's out there, I do. The numbers yesterday, do you follow Ben Devine on Twitter? He's a really good follow. Covers the NFL. Yesterday's rainy joint practice. Joe Burrell, 15 for 32 with three interceptions. Caleb Williams, 17 for 26. One interception, three touchdowns. - Yeah. - And I thought Keenan Allen, he looks bigger. They said he's put some weight on that. - He has put a little bit away. - And they said he's unlitarily unguardable. - Unless you're Jalen Johnson, as we saw in Hard Knocks. - That's correct. And I'm glad he's our guy. - Yeah, and that's good, right? - That's the best pick of the Ryan Pace regime, right? - Jalen Johnson? - Yeah. - I mean, it's Caleb Williams. - Ryan Pace. - Oh, Ryan Pace, sorry. I got my pace in polls because it's early, man. Yeah, yeah, Jalen Johnson, yeah. Unless you want to say that it's Justin Fields, which led them to be bad enough, which led them to decide to move on from Justin Fields, because he picked the wrong quarterback essentially, which led them to, it's a butterfly effect. We don't have to get into it. - It is. - He's got a tavern still there. - Yeah, probably if you want to go all the way back, you'd have to probably say his best pick was Mitchell Trubisky, because that failed, which led them to pick Justin Fields. - Yeah, we can go through the whole thing. - It all worked around. - Yeah, thanks for Trubisky Field, Ryan Pace. No, I think that he, it's good, and I think that you're going to get the same guys that were out there last Saturday. It's going to be everyone that's, quote, available. Like, if Montes Sweat doesn't play, I don't care. Like, he's got one job, get to the quarterback. - Right, and Eric Washington said the other. Sweat will be ready to go, and we play Tennessee. - Not worried about Sweat. I'm not worried about anyone on the defense. Not worried about a single guy on the defense. - I am, because they need Brisker there. - He'll be fine, but I'm not worried about them being ready for the season, and like ready to go, and like needing preseason reps. - Correct. - Correct. - You know, you're going to, and you know, we'll talk to Tom Thayer in the eight o'clock hour, you need these offensive linemen to play alongside each other, because it seems like Ryan Bates now is way too weak to eat. - So you're going to have Matt Pryor out there at guard. You're going to have Coleman Shelton out there at center, and I would just like them to name him the center. They say Coleman Shelton is going to be our center all year. That's fine. And those guys need to need chemistry. They need to learn how to play alongside each other, and if Bates is going to be banged up, and if Nate Davis is going to be banged up, fine. Matt Pryor it is, but you need reps. Like all these guys need to play on Saturday. - Here's Matt Eber Flus and Ryan Bates. - Yeah, he's weak to weak right now, so I don't really know. I hope, I'm hopeful that it's soon, you know. So I hope, you know, we'll see. - There you go, weak to weak. - Not great. - Also, here is Nate Davis. Listen to this. Nate Davis was asked about Eber Flus sending a message through the media that it's a competition. - Coach Flus really speaks in terms of the injuries about what that could or could not mean for a starting position or player time. He's speaking to that method alluding to you. Did you hear that? Did you find it any time of motivation or urgency to get back? - I didn't hear that. I don't really pay attention to social media. - Yay! It is not social media, Nate. It is the coach saying something at the podium. It just gets sent out immediately on social, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, whoever the reporter is posting. But then it gets into the newspaper and it gets into the websites and it gets through the team. Here, Coach said, wow, better get yourself out there, Nate. - I think he knows his place on the team. I think he knows that he's one of the necessary offensive linemen. I wouldn't say he's one of the best offensive linemen, but he's also making between 10 and 12 million this year and he's not going to get cut because of that. So he knows, as soon as he's healthy, he's going to be inserted back into the offensive line. - And when he's healthy, I went back and I played golf with Olin Kruits and Big Cat Williams last week. And Olin put the tape on when he's not available. He's a good football player. - Yeah, the problem is he's not available all the time because of him. - The greatest quality is availability. - Absolutely. And people that say, oh, just kick him off the team. He's bad. There's not a single player that has said he's a bad locker room guy. There's not a single player that doesn't like him. This isn't Chase Claypool, where they told him to stay away from the team. Like this is a different situation. Everyone seems to like Nate Davis on the team, right? So I think that when he comes back, he's going to get his starting job. Like you saw it, Ryan Bates is not hurt. He's better than Matt Pryor. And he's better at playing guard than Matt Pryor is. - And Matt Pryor played well last week. - Sure, I'm sure he did. Nate Davis is still better. - He's a better player. - So you're going to put him in there. He's, you need your healthy offensive lineman, even if he does, even if Bates comes back and Bates ends up starting, whatever. You need healthy offensive lineman. So Nate Davis getting healthy and getting back on the field is a good thing for as long as he can stay on the field. - All right, 3-1-2-3-3-2-3-7-7-6. Don't forget eight o'clock hour. He's going to play shot or no shot with us. He's going to go around the NFL with us. And he'll take calls. You can ask Tom Thayer, anything you want about the Chicago Bears. Listen to me, he watches, even if he's not there, they send him every play from every practice. He watches every snap at practice. He's got unbelievable insight and he's the best dude in the world. Love that guy. So we'll get your calls with him in the eight o'clock hour, but we'd like to hear your thoughts on, you glad they're playing Caleb? It could be a little rainy out there. Would you bubble wrap him? Some people, some friend of them are like, "Just bubble wrap him and see him in September." No, he needs to play. And you'll hear from Joe Burrow, that's next. - Kevin, Jay Hood are back. - And you know this, man. - Chicago's home for sports. - ESPN Chicago. (upbeat music) - So Bears and Bengals tomorrow, Bengals are enjoying the city. Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase, and six of their teammates were at Chicago Cut for dinner on Wednesday night. - That's nice. - And yesterday they practice, albeit through the rain. And here's Joe Burrow talking about Caleb Williams getting snapped as a rookie starter. And I did not know, they've been friends for five years because Joe Burrow tried to help recruit him to LSU. - I think those are just, those reps are so valuable. I think you have to start them right away 'cause you learn so much in that first year when you're getting those reps. And when you come in and you're named the starter immediately, I'll never quite understand when you draft a guy that you know is gonna be your starter, but then you don't name it your starter immediately. And so then he misses out on all those reps with the ones that you would've had had you just come in as the starter. And that's what, it's great about my situations. Zach told me I was the starter as soon as I got drafted. And I got all those reps with the ones in training camp. We didn't have OTAs that year, but those reps are so valuable in every rep. - You grow and you learn so much from so, I think that's always a challenge if that doesn't happen. - So there's Joe Burrow and they've worked out together in LA, they've been friends for five years. Burrow and Caleb Williams, they have a lot of similarities. Top pick name starter right from the get go and huge expectations. And Burrow has not won a Super Bowl. He has played in a Super Bowl and he's played in the AFC title game. I was at that game in Kansas City. They could have absolutely won that football game. - Yeah, they probably could have. And I think they'll get back. He's just got to stay healthy. - Yeah. - 'Cause I think he's the second best quarterback in the NFL when he's healthy. Like he's, that's not disrespectful to Josh Allen or anybody else. - Right. - He's just the second best quarterback in the NFL when he's healthy. - He's amazing. - Yeah. - He looks the part. - Yeah, absolutely. - Yeah, I think he's just, and I know he struggled yesterday, but I think that that has a lot to do with Jamar Chase holding in and not to do with, you know, because, you know, when you're, when you're practicing, you're trying to work through stuff and everything like that. And when your best wide receiver is in there and that best wide receiver happens to be a top three receiver in the NFL. - Yep. - It's going to hurt you, especially against a defense and a secondary as good as the Bears. - Here's Jeremy Rauch from Fox 19. His, he covers the Bengals. He was at Halis, watched the entire practice and then filed this report, his takeaways from the practice. Really good stuff here. - Hey everyone, thought today's practice needed some context. I know there's a lot of concern from some fans back in Cincinnati, kind of seeing the tweets and everything that played out today and practice for the Bengals. My one big takeaway from practice today is probably an obvious one, but I felt like some context was needed. So I'll just throw this out there. Today was the first day that it really looked like my goodness, Joe Burrow needs Jamar Chase. Today in the rain, when he wasn't thrown to T Higgins, ball was tipped, it was overthrown, it was behind a receiver, he had three interceptions, it just looked like Joe Burrow wasn't comfortable. This offense does not go without Jamar Chase on the field, especially against the Chicago defense, so I thought it was pretty darn impressive. So that's a big takeaway for today's practice. As for the defense, and I'm guessing there's no Bears fans on here, I could not have been more impressed with how Caleb Williams looks. And you look at his receding corner, reminded of who they could be this year with Roma Dunezay, the rookie, Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, Keenan Allen and DJ Moore gave the Bengals DB's trouble all day long. It just to me looked like the Bears offense was better than the Bengals defense. And a lot of ways, the Bengals defense wasn't able to slow them down with what they wanted to do. So two big takeaways, felt like the Bears won the day. - How about that? Felt like the Bears won the day and the team on the other side, legitimate, legitimate, thinks they can get to the Super Bowl and win it. - Yeah, and it's practice. They don't have their best wide receiver, who's probably one of the best in the league. And I think I'm not saying that this is, this means like the Bears defense is gonna be great, or they're gonna be top five or anything, but I always thought this defense, like this doesn't change my opinion of the defense. - But it's nice to hear it against a team that-- - Yeah, because I was talking-- - They played really well against, but we've been hearing this, that they've been playing really well in practice, and half their guys have been missing. - Correct, sweat just got back, no brisker. - No Kyler Gordon. - Gordon's been banged up. - So they've been beating the Bears up until, they've been beating their own team, and we heard it was rocky for the offense, and we heard it with all of it was sloppy, and they couldn't get a rhythm going. And that was against mostly backups. And then we saw, okay, well the offense played against the Bills, and it looked pretty, it looked fine, it looked pretty good, and so we know how good the Bears defense is going to be. Like this doesn't change my opinion, it just kind of reaffirms that this is probably, if everybody says how they of course, going to be a top 10 defense this year. - Yeah, and it looks like a really good football team. - Yeah, absolutely. - It's super cool, and again, this is not a shot at Justin Fields. This is a massive upgraded quarterback. - Yeah, but I think it's also, you're not doing him any disservices, like, you know, the BS, like Joe Burrow just talked about, of having him sit and not get reps, like, I don't know, and Shay can talk about it more than I can with the Patriots, like, just start Drake May. Like, what difference does it make? - 818. - Like you, no, you do not start Drake May. If he's not ready to play, you do not start it. - Can you imagine how-- - Did you watch last night? - Can you imagine how bad they would be? I did, I did. - He was awesome. - Uh, can you imagine how mad we would be if they brought in, if they drafted Roma Dunes A, if everything was the same, but he was getting reps against the twos because they brought in, like, Jacobi Bursett, or someone like that, and you saw, like, Jacobi's playing, well, he's not playing poorly, but you've got this kid who you drafted in the first round, you added all these weapons around him, and you've revamped your offensive line, you've got a top 10 defense, what you think can be a top 10 defense, and you're not playing your quarterback. Like, we would be yelling and screaming every single morning. - Right, okay. Came in as a generational talent. Whether he is or isn't, that was the tag that he got, it's different. - I believe in playing your guys right away. - Daddy, your guy, save it. - Yeah, this kid, it's all about development. - Of course, but if I draft a quarterback in the first round, you're playing. You're absolutely playing. - Yeah, I disagree. It's a case-by-case basis. Jordan Love was a first round pick. He was nowhere close to being ready to play. Fortunately, they had Aaron Rodgers he could sit. Patrick Mahomes has said, I couldn't even read a defense 'cause I didn't have to. - If you're a quarterback that's drafted in the first round of the NFL draft, you better be ready to play in the NFL. There's probably gonna be hiccups, there's probably gonna be some growing pains, but if that's not the case, then you were overdrafted. - Disagree. - Disagree. Jordan Love now is one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League. - And he might've been just as good. It's just that we, he went to the Packers because they were doing a disservice to Aaron Rodgers. Aaron Rodgers might have won more in Green Bay if they drafted wide receivers. - Probably right. - If they drafted him help. - But Aaron's talked about how I was nowhere near ready to play. Sitting behind Brett was the best thing ever. Patrick Mahomes, best thing ever happened. I sat for a year. - I think Mahomes were even just as good if he started right away. - I'm not sure about that. - I think it's dependent, like if you're drafted-- - Case by case for me. - If you're drafted 15 to 32, I can see a case for sitting you. If you draft a quarterback in the top five, you probably should play him. There's probably not a lot of reason not to. Top five pick, you gotta hit the ground running. - You at least aren't sitting out an entire year. Like if you're in the first round, I understand what you're saying. - Well, I don't think they ever was. Like he would start by week seven anyway. He's making a case to start week one now, but like-- - Like JJ McCarthy's a situation where if he wasn't hurt, I would say-- - He was not gonna start. - I understand he wasn't gonna start, but I had planned going through the schedule that the Bears were gonna see JJ McCarthy twice. Because at that point, unless-- - Yeah, 'cause we don't play them until-- - Yeah, and unless Sam-- - Late. - Unless Sam Darnold has them as a leading the division by the time you get to that, you know, November, when they play the Vikings, then you stick with Sam Darnold because you're trying to win. But I don't think Sam Darnold is gonna be great for the Vikings this year. So if you, I can understand not starting them right away, but they better play in their first year. Otherwise you're wasting a year. What's the point? So they can watch? What is JJ McCarthy learning from Sam Darnold? - What are we doing? - He's learning how to be a pro. - What is Drake made learning from Jacobi Bursett? Like they're fine, but this isn't Aaron Rodgers sitting behind Brett Favre. This isn't even, like Alex Smith had them in the playoffs. Jacobi, the Patriots are gonna be one of the worst teams in the NFL. - But again, just because a guy is not a Hall of Fame level quarterback, that doesn't mean Jacobi Bursett doesn't have a lot of knowledge about how the thing works to help bring along the guy who he knows is going to be eventually his success. - What was Trubisky ever gonna learn from Mike Lennon? Nothing. - Well, I think that's the point too, 'cause like think about if you're drafted 15 through 32 as a quarterback, you're probably sitting behind somebody serviceable. From a home, it was Alex Smith. Cheeps were good with them. Lamar was behind Joe Flacco, Super Bowl winner who they believed in going into that season. Love was behind Rodgers. Rodgers was behind Favre. Like those guys are typically behind. - But you guys are good quarterbacks. - But you guys are automatically assuming that if a guy isn't a great player, he has no knowledge to impart. And that's just false. - You can't have knowledge and sit in the room and help him and sit on the sidelines and help him during, you know, when the defense is on the field, you can help someone, but sitting there and watching Jacobi Bursette play football isn't doing anything for Drake May. - Especially 'cause he stinks. He played last night, he was horrible. - It doesn't matter if he stinks. He may have knowledge that he can impart until the kid's ready. - Yeah, do that in the room. - Justin Fields was not ready to play as a rookie. He was not. - That's my point is more if you're drafting a guy in the top five, top 10, probably should start him. Like we all agreed the Falcons taking Pennix at eight with zero intention to play him this year is stupid, right? - And what if we fast, I'm not saying it'll happen. What if five years from now Michael Pennix is a top five quarterback and says boy sitting, watching Kirk for a while, I got my feet wet, I got used to being a pro, not a college, but maybe that will all work out beautifully for them. Pennix will probably get to play because. - Well, Kirk might get hurt or not be ready if I have-- - It could be a lot of need. - But if it does work for them, bully for them, but if it doesn't, like they just had to give up a pick to acquire Matthew Judon, they could have used the eighth pick in the draft on Dallas Turner and they wouldn't have to do that. - All right, we're gonna take a quick time out. Jesse's gonna join us, get us an update on, Jed Hoyer said yesterday that they're raising a banner, right? They're in the luxury tax. - They're raising a banner for the luxury tax. - Do we have a statue that's going out front that's like a tax form? Like is it 1099 going out front? Like an earnings statement or like what are we doing? - And how are you in the luxury tax? How in the H are you in the luxury tax and be this bad? - They're the best at poor spending. Congratulations. - Crazy, 312-332-3776. Jesse is with a baseball update. Tom Thayer is with us eight to nine. That's coming up on ESPN. - Checkmate one six land here, suppression on target. - That's why I see him in my shot. - Shot or no shot with cap and G hood on ESPN one. That's why I see him in my shot. - All right, it's America's favorite segment. It's called Shot or No Shot, a Daniel Zetterman creation. And it is every day at eight o'clock here on the cap and G hood show. We welcome in a celebrity contributor, my guy, Tom Thayer. - Hi, Tommy. - Cap, how you doing? - I'm doing great, man. - Nice to hear you eyes always. - Tom, Tom, how are you? - I'm doing good, man. How's everybody in the station? - Well, everybody is good other than Jay Hood. - Yes. - It's me, Shay, Jay Moore, and we got Adam with us 'cause hoodie is a little under the weather today, so. - You know, I will say deal breakers probably gives me more of a reaction when I'm listening to you guys and some of this stuff. You bring up in that segment. - Yeah. - But Shot or No Shot, I find myself talking to myself when I'm in my car driving up to practice. Listen to you guys 'cause I'm always in my car at eight o'clock. - Shot, absolutely. That's great. All right, we'll get into football with you 'cause I wanna ask you some questions about yesterday. And then I don't, did you hear us play the Cincinnati reporter and his takeaway from being there yesterday? - I did not. I'd like to hear it though. - We'll play that for you. Here is Shayne Orley. - All right, a lot of football to get to actually, Shot or No Shot. We have Tom Thayer on. We're talking bears. So we'll start yesterday. Joe Burrow struggled mightily in joint practices with the Bears through three interceptions, struggled to get completions against the secondary. Of course, he did not have Jamar Chase, but the word is he was locking in on T Higgins. Wasn't getting anything done. Shot or No Shot. This Bears defense is going to be special. Tom? - A shot, you know, because the one thing about this defense, the back seven now has played together for a couple of years outside of Kevin Bayard. Now they're being complimented by a full season of Montez sweat. And then you got guys that are really, you know, picking up the pace when you think about Austin Booker and you think of Daniel Hardy, these guys that are, you know, started on the backup role, but they're impressing the coaches enough that it can put up pressure. And one thing about Joe Burrow yesterday in practice. So to me, seven on seven, and that's a passing, primarily a passing drill that doesn't include the line of scrimmage that just includes the linebackers and defensive backs. In the first four plays of seven on seven for Joe Burrow, he threw three check down routes and then he threw up over the middle pass at like a four yard completion, the T Higgins. So if he wanted an opportunity to throw downfield in seven on seven, that's probably the most favorable period because you really don't have any pressure in your face. But the Bears defense was covering so well that he had to go to check downs in seven on seven, which sometimes you don't want your quarterback to do and just, and the less there's just no other option. - I would say shot, but I don't know if yesterday gave me any more confidence in them. I think it just kind of backed up the point that I think that when you heard that last week before the Bills game, Tom, that they were really giving it to the Bears offense and like half the defense was out for most of those practices. Like, that's when you're kind of like, okay, the depth is there because if the starters are out and these other guys are still, you know, giving it to Keenan Allen and Roma Dunezay and DJ Moore and Cole Comette that like, this could be, as long as everyone stays healthy, this could be pretty special. And then seeing in the preseason game, guys like Austin Booker really showing up and like I know he's going against their threes as well. So it's not like great competition, but just to see that the potential is there is something that I think, and you know that now you have depth, that if so, if you do end up bringing someone in, opposite Montez Sweat, that if they do get hurt or if Montez Sweat gets hurt or whoever, that you do have the depth there, that you can have a true next man up as opposed to just like, oh God, what are we gonna do? - Yeah, I'm gonna say a shot again. You gotta be blessed with reasonable health. You know, you see teams last year, the Bengals. Joe Burles done, see you later. Their hopes go by the boards. Gotta have health on both sides of ball, but I really, really like way the roster is taking shape, especially on the defensive side of the football, because Pulse took a lot of heat when he didn't draft the receiver or an offensive lineman in his first draft when he didn't have a number one pick. He took Brisker and Gordon and he said, that is gonna be two huge pieces for us going forward. If they can stay healthy, I completely agree with him. Shea. - All right, we've got a lot of reports. I'm gonna piggyback a little bit. We've got a lot of reports out of camp that the offense has been sluggish and inconsistent in the Bears' practices, but at the preseason game with Kayla Williamson, they got almost eight yards of play. Yesterday, the reporting was Bears' offense was way ahead of the Bengals' defense. So shot or no shot. The offense has only struggled at camp because it has to go against this Bears' defense. - Tom? - Well, you know, I'm gonna say a shot, not because of the Bears' defense, because you have a rookie quarterback. And for anybody to think that Kayla Williams is gonna go from zero to a hundred within a four weeks of practice, I think we gotta slow that process down. And the way that the Bears' defense can play against Kayla Williams, it makes him play a more an efficient brand of football while he's trying to learn terminology, while he's trying to learn, if you're gonna call an audible at the line of scrimmage according to the terminology you said in the huddle. And then you have to know the two plays in the huddle, how every one of their assignments are different depending upon the play called. So I just think it's a little unfair to have these expectations out of Kayla, even though he had a solid performance in Buffalo. And I think a lot of it has to do, I think Shane Waldron is doing a really nice job. If you look at the protections that he called for Kayla week one, play action pass, the screen to DeAndre Swift, the rollouts to the right for Cole and DJ Moore. And then when he did scramble out of the pocket, the offensive line controlled a nice defensive line stuck in front of them. As soon as he saw those bodies cross on the offensive line in control, he took off. So I still like what Shane is doing for him under game conditions, but let's not have unreasonable expectations for a rookie quarterback right now. - Yeah, I'm gonna go shot as well. I was very intrigued reading today, Zach Taylor's comments about what he saw with the Bears. And he said, getting Shane Waldron is an excellent teacher who will put Williams in the greatest position. You have to have a good team around him, but you now have to have a coaching staff that knows how to develop someone with these type of skills. And look, Caleb's had a different level, man. Again, I said this earlier, this is not a shot at Justin Fields, but this is a massive upgrade at the position. - Oh, of course it is. And I think that you also have with this very good defense, you have very intelligent football IQ guys. And there was a quote last week, I forget which Bears said it, but it was like basically, we know all the offensive plays. So we know based on motion, we know based on where they're lined up, we know what's coming. So like we know how to defend it. Like obviously Caleb's gonna pick and choose and go to different receivers and whatnot, but they know the plays just because they've seen them for what now a month. So they know what's coming. So this is only helping Caleb Williams, but I agree with what you said, Tom, that this is like he's not, they're still gonna be growing pains. Like he's not gonna come out and be the best quarterback in the NFL or second best quarterback in the NFL besides Patrick Mahomes in his first few weeks of the season. He's gonna throw some picks. He's gonna, you know, things are gonna be off a little bit. Like he's still rookie. And it's not gonna be perfect right out of the gate. - Shay. - All right, we talked about some possible extensions. The Bears could look to hand out this season, including one for Tevin Jenkins. Jenkins has mentioned his teams reached out and hasn't heard anything. There are some things working against him. The guards in this league have gotten expensive bears, drafted Kieran Amagogy, who could potentially be bumped inside. Braxton Jones, also capable of being bumped inside. They also have three picks in the first two rounds next year if they want to start over at guard. Shot or no shot, this will be Tevin Jenkins last season with the Chicago Bears. - Tommy? - No, no, no shot. If Tevin Jenkins lives up to his billing, because remember, when he was drafted to come here, they kind of thought, okay, this guy is a walk in and play left tackle. Or if he doesn't succeed at right tackle, he'll play left tackle. And I still do believe Tevin Jenkins could slide out the right tackle and play that position. Position, however, it's about, you know, availability. And if we talk about any player in the NFL, it's about 17 games in an NFL season. And when Tevin Jenkins pulled both of his calves in Indianapolis last year and missed a couple of games because of it, and then there's probably four or five times during the course of the season, that he had to visit the blue tent. And you didn't know if he was gonna be able to return or not. You know, to me, if I'm looking at a player and I'm thinking about giving him an extension, I need to be able to have the privilege of looking at his medical background and what his status is right now and some of the pinch nerves and the other things he's faced throughout his career. However, when Tevin plays at his peak performing ability, he's one of the, maybe one of the best guards in our division and he's got a chance to be one of the best better guards in the National Football League. So, you know, it's up to Tevin and it's not up to Ryan Polls or Matt Iberfluz or the team. It's up to Tevin if he's that reliable guy that I think he's gonna get an extension here. And I completely agree 1,000%. I look at availability as being such a huge thing. And one of my favorite guards that ever played in the National Football League, his name is Thomas Allen Thayer. And by the way, happy birthday today, Tom. - Thank you. - Oh, happy birthday. 63 today. This is what we got you. You have to sit up here for an hour. (applause) - Listen man, this is the best birthday present I could have. - Okay, and then I want, listen to these numbers for Tom Thayer. He came in as a rookie in '85. He had to come from the Chicago Blitz. He played all 16 games. 86, all 16 games. 87, we had a strike short in season. He played all 11. Then he played all 16, then all 16, then all 16, then all 16, then all 16. That dude was available. That's what I want from Tevin Jenkins. And if he does, he's gonna be a wealthy man. I think it's a shot just because he's got it, but he has to stay healthy. Because the reason that they won't negotiate with him until the bye week is because they're waiting to see if he's healthy. If you guys remember, when Ryan Pulse first came in, Jenkins requested a trade. - Ryan Pulse said to us on the air, I was that close from releasing him. - Yeah, that close. - Then he completely turned it around. So I don't think that Ryan Pulse is necessarily married to keeping Tevin Jenkins. If he plays well and he stays healthy, sure, you reward your own. And if he plays really well when he is healthy, but if he doesn't make it to the bye week and he misses a couple of games, I don't think he's gonna be on this team. But it's completely to do with health because I think he completely changed his relationship with the team and with Ryan Pulse when he came in. Because there was all that training camp drama a couple of years ago when Pulse first came in with Tevin Jenkins. - Correct, they were going to move on and Ryan had said to us on an interview, he hired a mental skills coach, Tevin did. He said, "It's the most remarkable turnaround I have seen "and I'm so glad he's with us." - Yeah, absolutely. - Shay. - All right, last one. Ryan Pulse swung and missed and a move for Edge rusher, Matthew Judon. But we were all happy to see he's being aggressive on the market, making the phone calls. Shot or no shot, Ryan Pulse will make a trade before the season starts. I'm hoping no shot. Because from what I've seen out of the Bears and the development of Austin Booker and Daniel Hardy and hopefully some of these other injured guys come back and perform at a level that they can be considered in the mixed Khalil Kareem is playing well. Jacob Martin, he was playing well before he got hurt but now he's been out of action. I don't want a guy that I need a nine or 10 day ramp up period. I don't want to pay a guy a premium and he's not a major contributor until the bye week. So, you know, one thing I will say about Austin Booker and you guys kind of brought it up before with Caleb Williams. When you play against the same group of guys every single day, you know their tendencies, you know their balance, you know what they like to do. You know, I had a 501 on ones against Steve McMichael. When I got in my stance, he knew what I was gonna do. When he got in his stance, I knew what he was gonna do. But the competition was still great. When you look at Austin Booker, Austin Booker is a much better reactionary pass rusher than he is going against his own guys every single day. So, when they get a guy that really doesn't know what his tools are, what his arsenal is like, Austin Booker is really effective pass rusher. So, I think he's your game day guy, not necessarily a one-on-one guy when he's going against Braxton Jones or Darnell Wright or Larry Borham or Collins or any of the regular tackles that he sees in practice. - Yeah, I'm gonna go shot. And I thought you made a really interesting point right there where he's a reactionary player and he needs to go up against the opposition. I'm excited to see what he does when he gets to the season because he has a world of athleticism that he could really, really become a hell of a football player. - Yeah, I say no shot just because I think the asking price for these guys are too high. Like we saw that they wanted a third, they took the Falcons third because they thought that it would be worse than the Bears third. They originally asked the Bears for a second for Judon and the Bears said no, Paul said no. So, I think the asking price for some of these guys is way too high. So, I think that maybe they look for someone off the scrap heap if, you know, when cuts start happening just for depth and then got quite still out there. - They're still sitting out there. - And Sean Rennick at some point, they're gonna move. That's why I'm saying shot that they could go get a guy like that. - Yeah. - Maybe. - Yeah, maybe. - All right, Shay, are we done? - That shot. - All right, shot. - Around the NFL. By the way, we said happy birthday to Tom Thayer. Another great Chicago athletes birthday is today. Happy birthday, Edward Woodrow. - Yeah, Leo. - Oh, check. - Yeah. - Yes. - And so. - And so. - You guys share a birthday with Madonna, Steve Carell, Young Thug. I'm sure you guys love Young Thug. Let's see, James Cameron is 69 today. Happy birthday. - Good age, 69. - How about that? Let's see, who else? I think that's it. - Unfortunately, the anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley. - That too. You know who informed us all about the death of Elvis? Harry Kerry during the Cubs game. They were best of friends. - Be careful when you're dropping logs today. - All right. - I'm just saying. - Wow, Angela Bassett's birthday today. It's a good day, Kathleen Gifford. - Really good day. All right, we'll take quick time out. Around the NFL Max. (dramatic music) - If you missed something, get the podcast on the ESPN Chicago app. (dramatic music) Cap and Jay Hood are back on Chicago's home for sports. - ESPN Chicago. - Knit both sucks. He sucks. - I'm just a fan. I'm not a football evaluator. - I love the Green Bay Packers. - The guy is front, but there he goes. - This is not Detroit, man. This is the Super Bowl. - I love winning. - He starts to come at any moment. - This is a really thickly built guy. - I mean, what's am I so you're looking for? I'm gonna be staying here, huh? - Whoa, boy. - We do it every day. Right after shot or no shot. We go around the National Football League. Tom Thayer, the great Tom Thayer is with us. Here's Shane Northland. - I'm so glad to have a former player in with us today to tell me about my mind. - Yeah, I played Division 3. (laughing) - All right, Jay. - That's enough, Kaplan. - Thank you. - Last night, if you watched the Patriots, preseason game against the Eagles, Drake May got a lot of exposure and was really good. - He had a deep ball throw to J-bond Baker that was incredible. Jumped up in the pocket, slid left a little bit, evaded a pass rush, uncorked it, Baker dropped the pass, but the throw itself was amazing. It's got people wondering if Drake May should be the week one starter for the Patriots. I question it a little bit because you look at the Patriots schedule, at Bengals, home against the Seahawks, at Jets, at Niners, and then the Dolphins before things start to lighten up the first five weeks. - That's all in five. If you're New England, aren't you better off letting Brissette wear the 0-5 and then you can start Drake May, week six, week seven, bring him in as the hero. Rather than start Drake May 0-5 and burn his confidence, I always think about Trevor Lawrence starting 0-4 with the Jags under Urban Meyer. Trevor Lawrence hasn't turned into the quarterback that we all thought he would be. I'm not saying that's why, but that's a tough way to start your career, no? - I agree with you. I'm old school NFL quarterback development. If you don't have to play him immediately, don't play him. And whether you wanna think about Peyton Manning throwing 27 or 28 interceptions as rookie year, or you wanna think of a guy like Dan Marino not starting his first game. And then he eventually replaced the starting quarterback and carried the team after that. So if Drake May's got a lot of college experience, he's been around the block a couple times. However, I think when you get into that NFL quarterback play, get into the abusive stadiums, you get into the cadence. To me, if you have the luxury of sitting Drake May for that period of time until Jacobi Briskett wears out as welcome there, I agree with you guys. That's what I would do as well. - Yeah, we were having this debate before the showtime with May Abdullah and Shay. And I'm with you. I'm more old school. Jordan Love has said, man, I didn't like sitting, but it was the best thing. My home said, I couldn't read the defense. We didn't have to do that when I went to college at Texas Tech. It was the greatest to sit there. Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen. There are a bunch of dudes that said, boy, it really helps. I thought Justin was pushed in too quick. Mitch, Ryan Pace told me the day after the draft, he's not playing at all as a rookie. And of course, five weeks in, bam, Monday night football. Go get him, big guy. I'm not saying he'd have made it, but they got away from their plan. I don't believe a guy should play unless he's ready to play. - I mean, I would probably, I would start him because I don't think that the losing five games in a row. I mean, it's not like the only difference. I mean, listen, Trevor Lawrence won a national championship. Drake May played in North Carolina. Like he's used to losing. Like not, they weren't horrible, but it's not like he was in the national championship game making college football playoffs. - But I would say like, I've talked to people and not, this is a big, oh, Shay's talked to people moment. People that were in the North Carolina program of what we have told me. - Sources. - The whole thing with Drake May not have an help got in his head a little bit. He started hero balling at North Carolina. I don't want that to happen. - But is he going to have any more help week six than he is week one? - No, but he'll have less pressure, I would assume. - I mean, I don't think there's any pressure. I think people believe that the Patriots are going to be one of the worst teams in the NFL. So like, I don't think there is any pressure. You know, like Zach Wilson played with a really good defense. He had some weapons, he just couldn't do it. I think, I think expectations are pretty realistic for the Patriots. I think that, you know, no one thinks they're going to be great, especially after trading Judon and all the injuries that they've had leading into this season. I just think he should, you should get as many live refs as possible. And starting, you know, the record, I would, if I was John May I'd just be like, "Hey man, just go out and get refs." Like, this is what it is, what it is. Don't focus, you know, what did, what did Saban say on Hard Knocks? The scoreboard only matters at the end of the game or whatever it is. - And he said, it's all about development. - Yeah, development. - What's the best for his development? - Development. - With Tom on this. - Shay. - Story developing out of Los Angeles, Chargers that coach Jim Harbaugh had apparently discussed higher in Colin Kaepernick as an assistant coach. He says that won't be happening any time soon. His quote, "I love Colin and always will." That gets conflated into he might play here or might coach here. I love Colin, but he's not going to be on the coaching staff. It's set for this year, and he's not going to be playing on the roster either. The report was that Harbaugh reached out to Kaepernick with an offer to make him an assistant coach. And I kind of just have a general question about this. Is Harbaugh running an NFL team or a country club? Because so far he's just loading up on his buddies at Assistant. And I don't know that a lot of them make sense. Greg Roman to run the Kaepernick and Lamar offense for Justin Herbert, who just got out of a walking boot, doesn't seem like the greatest match, but him and Harbaugh are best buddies. - You know, I think that Planner Fashy, Planner Fashy is going to have a lingering effect all year. I had it in one of my last years and it was the worst pain that I ever played with in my career. So Justin Herbert is going to have a little bit of issues with escape ability in that Planner Fashy. I guess he's going to try to play with. You know, Colin Kaepernick, he's 36 years old, played six years in the NFL. He hasn't been around the NFL now for quite a while. And he doesn't know the language, the terminology. So what specifically is he going to coach? Is he going to try to coach technique and fundamentals of quarterback play to a guy like Justin Herbert? Because they don't have similar styles of play. And if Jim is doing a feel good story, I can understand that, because there's a lot of feel good stories in coaching hires in the NFL. And I'm not opposed to it. But you don't want too many opinions in the coaching of a position to confuse the guy. And even last year in that interview with Justin Fields, when he said he had got a lot of different people in my head, then he had to go and retract that statement. So I think for the safety of Justin Herbert and his future, bringing in another voice that really doesn't, is not familiar with the system yet, could be a detriment more than a help. - Yeah, I agree with what you said there. The other thing is, Shay, some coaches vibe better with certain guys. And that means the staff becomes a better place to be. You can't just go get the smartest guy. It's gotta be the right fit with the head coach. They gotta vibe. If they don't, it's not gonna work. - I think Colin Kaepernick is perfectly suited for when Flag Football comes to the Olympics in four years in LA. That's what he'll be great for. Focus on that right now. Just try to win a gold medal for the good old USA. - Playing your coaching. - No, playing. He said he wants to play. He wants to play in the Flag Football. - How old is this guy? - But you think-- - He's 36 right now. - You think Patrick Mahomes is gonna go out there and play for Team USA in Flag Football? - Probably not. - No, it's gonna be guys like Jimmer for debt was in the three on three. - Caleb's in the Olympics. - In the Olympics. - In the Olympics. - I wanna be in the Olympics in five years. - Yeah, that's four years from now. He's probably gonna be a $75 million quarterback at that point. They'll be working on their second Super Bowl. Let's just focus on that. - You know, a lot of these guys keep the dream alive for a long time. 'Cause I was just reading a quote by Robert Griffith III saying that he still wants to be considered an active player in eligible to join a team. And that's just keeping hope alive, I guess. - Good, you know what? Tell RG3 and Kaepernick they can lead the Olympic Flag Football team in 2028. - Maybe my favorite NFL guard Tom Thayer will be playing. - I could get in a stance, I couldn't get out of it. - That's a lot of sense. I go, could you go out and play one play? He goes, yeah, one play. And I'd be done. That'd be it. - You'll have a retired Keenan Allen by then too out there. Like it'll be great. - Unbelievable. (laughs) - That we're done? All right, we're done. We're gonna take calls too with Tom. We're gonna talk football. What he saw yesterday between the Bears and Bengals if you've got a question for Tom. 3-1-2-3-3-2-3-7-7-6. We're talking Bears football next.
